and donated $21,000. Tomago Aluminium more than matched the staff donations, adding another $29,000 to take the total donation to $50,000. Rural Fire Service District Co-ordinator for Infrastructure, Inspector Glenn Byrnes, said the money would be divided equally between four local Brigades - Raymond Terrace, Medowie, Thornton and Salt Ash – Williamtown. “Those units will identify where and how the money will be allocated and spend it accordingly, possibly on their Stations or on equipment such as thermal imaging cameras, portable radios or computer equipment that will help them into the future,” Inspector Byrnes said. He added that the 2019/2020 bushfires were unprecedented in their size and ferocity, and thanked both Tomago Aluminium and the broader corporate sector not only for the financial support but also for the understanding given to volunteer firefighters within their ranks. Commenting on the generosity of Tomago Aluminium’s employees and contractors, company Chief Executive Officer, Matt Howell, said the employee-led initiative
reflected the importance of the bushfires to the Tomago workforce. “We have a large number of employees onsite who are Rural Fire Service volunteers so it was a cause that resonated with so many of us,” Mr Howell said. “Looking after each other is what Australians do and we are proud to support the Rural Fire Service,” he added.
“The RFS has worked tirelessly over the last few months and it is good to be able to show our support.” Tomago Aluminium’s employees are no strangers to throwing their weight behind worthwhile causes. In 2018 its workforce came together to support farmers struggling with the ongoing drought, collecting $25,000 for the Buy a Bale campaign.
That sum was also matched by the company and became a $50,000 donation. Every year Tomago Aluminium employees and management also donate more than $50,000 to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and more than $100,000 to a number of local charities and community events.

Anna Bay whilst having a bit of fun. Emily Harkness from the group said it was all about being proactive in helping shape the future of Anna Bay. “Over the years Anna Bay has drawn the short straw with critical funding, but now we’ve got the legs to attract grants with a highly engaged community that wants to see this place thrive,” said Miss Harkness. “It’s all about investing through social and economic capital to ensure Anna Bay’s a major draw card with a strong sense of community for families and visitors alike.” Previous works completed by the group have seen the the community hall refurbished with a fresh coat of paint, air conditioning and new toilet facilities. Back to Level 1
THE NSW Water Minister has confirmed Lower Hunter water restrictions will be rolled back to level 1 on Monday next week. Melinda Pavey will be at Grahamstown Dam in Port Stephens this afternoon to officially make the announcement. It turns out the Lower Hunter has used 20% less water than expected. Sydney will also have its restrictions eased to level 1 in a fortnight. Minister Pavey says the Lower Hunter's total water storage is just above the 60% threshold and the advice is that it should stay there. "Our experts in the Hunter are confident we'll get a few more per cent in coming weeks. "We also have positive rain indications. "But we're confident that even if we don't have rain for another 4 to 5 months that we'll stay above that 60% threshold."

Changing Climate One Tree At A Time
By Julie MCKIMM
LOCAL Medowie resident Christophe Devorsine has set himself a personal goal this year by planting 150 new trees on his property to assist in the reversal of climate change. Mr Devorsine’s property borders
the Campvale Drain and has two feeder drains traversing it. He told News Of The Area, ”I think that if we all do a small bit to help the environment then we can help reverse climate change.” “This is my way of doing my bit”. Whilst focusing on rainforest species of plants that are endemic to the Hunter Valley such as the Swamp Mahogany and Paperbarks, he also indends to includes some bush tucker, including his recently
SOCIETY and socialisation is important for all members of the community. There are affordable options for Seniors with several organisations based throughout Port Stephens which offer social opportunities. The Probus Club of Fingal Bay is one of these organisations where members come together to enjoy different social opportunities. Probus is a great leveller with everyone valued for their contribution. Holiday time meant gatherings with family seemed to take priority over those with friends. The Probus Club of Fingal Bay is already back to its
to a more natural environment. Mr Devorsine believes his green thumb dates back to when he was living in New Caledonia with his Grandmother who propagated seeds to sell at the local markets. This weekend’s project is to plant his ten new red cedars, which are known as red gold due to the quality of the timber it produces. He hopes that once he has reached optimal capacity on his property, that he may be able to assist with some natural plantings along the banks of the Campvale Drain to aid in its regeneration

Ross Jennings, appointed wine manager. was unable to attend, but Roy presided with his usual skill. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “Several different wines were sampled, judged and marks given –most very favourable! “Nibbles were provided and, before going home, there were welcome cuppas and cake to be enjoyed,” she said. The Fingal Bay Probus Club meets on the second Monday of every month, at 9.30am at the Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. Probus offers a selection of activities such as morning teas,

EXPERT
HOW IS THE MARKET?
“Late last year a reader asked for your thoughts on the new year’s market. You said you were expecting a strong start to the year. I’m just wondering how that’s tracking?” THANK you for reading my column – and for following up! Since I responded to that question eastern Australia has experienced a horror run of events: continuing drought, furnace-like heat, raging fires, gale force winds, dust storms, torrential rain and now flooding – weather some might describe as biblical! Despite these challenges - and they are serious challenges impacting our local and national economies as well as our emotional fortitude - the market has been surprisingly buoyant, particularly in the Hunter-Mid-North Coast Region. January 31 is acknowledged as the most popular date in the most popular month for people to quit their jobs – holidays over, reassessing their goals, feel like a new start etc. and this may account for the flush of listings and buyers. So, the short answer is yes, our market is particularly strong with good residential, rural lifestyle and investor sales being made throughout January and February and I expect this trend to continue into the popular autumn listing period. Are you thinking of listing or buying? If so, the R&R Team is here to assist.

Dive Adventure
THE Doreen Bradley Pool at Tilligerry Aquatic Centre was the venue recently for scuba diver training. It’s not the first time the pool has been used for such purposes; Even our local Marine Rescue has practised their survival skills there in case they come to grief at sea on one of their rescue missions. Retiree Debi Thornton who was diving some thirty years ago decided to get into the sport as part of her ‘bucket list’. “I’ve now got my life back after a long career of work and want to make the most of it,” she said.
“I plan to explore the reefs and wrecks around Vanuatu once I’m qualified and confident,” she added. Dive instructor, Mick Todd from ‘Let’s Go Adventures Dive Nelson Bay’ said that interacting with sharks was one of the most popular types of dives they catered for. “We do a lot of charter dives off Broughton Island around reefs and wrecks but getting up close and personal with the placid grey nurse sharks really excites the adventure seekers,” he said. All divers using scuba gear must be trained and licensed. This licence must be in the possession of the diver and

THE Port Stephens Community Arts Centre’s current feature artist is Christine Leaming. Christine’s wall of artwork features delicious food. Christine told News of the Area “I am interested in drawing and painting the everyday, the ordinary parts of our lives. “Food is just that!” This collection of work explores a variety of edibles in watercolour and pastel as still life compositions and vignettes. Christine went on to say “It was my intention to be an artist!
As a child in the UK, Christine loved to paint; she would sit at her window ledge using the card from her Mother’s nylons packaging and a student watercolour palette. Christine went on to achieve a Diploma of Teaching in Secondary Art, followed by an Associate Diploma in Fine Art. Free Smoke Alarm Check For NSW Seniors By Marian SAMPSON
SENIORS Week is a good time to check out all the different free things on offer to Seniors. Some of these services are available all year round including the fire safety checks. Fire and Rescue NSW offers local Seniors, or those living with disabilities, free home fire safety checks. Dennis Peters, Captain of Fire and Rescue Raymond Terrace told News Of The Ares, “Under this program, Fire and Rescue Raymond Terrace will come out to your house, check your smoke alarms, replace
them for free if necessary, and talk to you about fire safety in your home.” Nowadays many smoke detectors have an expiry date after which they no longer work, and batteries need replacing regularly. It’s also a timely opportunity to make sure your home is safe as we come out of storm season and move towards cooler months. “These checks are extremely valuable, as it helps you to identify any fire safety issues and make sure that your smoke detectors are in good, working order in case there is
a fire in your house. “You can keep up to date with major incidents, fire and weather information, and fire safety information on our Facebook page, located at www.fb.com/ RaymondTerraceFireStation432,” he said. If you would like to discuss any home fire safety issues, or this program, please get in touch with the team at the Fire Station at any time on (02) 4987 2627. Free is a magic word that makes us all feel like we’ve had a win. But taking up this free offer makes the team at Fire and Rescue NSW feel like they have had a win too. The crews at Fire and Rescue NSW would far rather come out and do a safety check for seniors and those living with disabilities than to roll out in the middle of the night in response to an avoidable fire where lives are put at risk.

Dear Jasminda,
During our Valentine’s Day lunch, the conversation turned to what type of animal my husband and I remind each other of. I suggested he was like a lion: tenacious, rugged, muscly and protective. He suggested I was like a wombat. What am I to make of that? Mrs KD,
A WOMBAT. Mmmmm. Well, of course your first thoughts were possibly the physical attributes of a wombat – do you have short broad feet, long incisors, and a stocky barrel shape? No? Ok, perhaps let’s not dwell on the wombat’s physical characteristics. Perhaps your husband was going a bit deeper. Maybe he was referring to your eating habits. Do you graze for several hours after sunset? No? Are you vegan? No? Okay, let’s continue. Wombats are solitary creatures, so perhaps he meant the amount of time you like to spend alone, or maybe, when you are trying to warn him about something, it is in a low guttural growl. Do you hiss when angered? Or, given it was Valentine’s Day, maybe he was referring to other habits. Do you attack him for 30 minutes before you mate? Do you consummate your relationship on your sides? Does the courtship phase involve him chasing you in wide circles and then biting your rump? Look, Mrs KD, I think we both may be overthinking this. I certainly am. Let’s just assume that he thinks you are cute and cuddly. That you were an ‘accidental hero’ during the bushfires, provided a safe space for others when they had no home. That you don’t mind the occasional tummy rub, and that you are also highly intelligent (true wombat fact). Take it as a compliment. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Seven races were decided over the weekend in at times light, fluky southerly winds. Skippers were able to discard their worst individual result in determining the final point score. Competitors travelled from as far afield as Canberra, Toukley, Palm Beach, Queens Lake, Mannering Park, Kurnell and Wallerewang. Thirty boats took part. The regatta would not be possible without the support of Coastal Real Estate and Harken Chandlery. Tanilba Sailing Club is very much a family oriented club with young beginner sailors most welcome to learn the ropes from the more experienced seniors.

Groper Girls Shine In NHRU Summer 7s By Mitch LEES
THE Nelson Bay Rugby Club women’s sevens team capped off a twilight showcase for the NHRU Women’s Summer 7s competition by taking the spoils in both their matches at the Tomaree Sports Complex on Friday 14 February. Six teams from across the Hunter descended on Port Stephens for the second round of the competition that saw some dizzying defence and dazzling footwork in front of a vocal crowd. The Groper women took

on Waratah in their opening fixture and after trailing 15 nil at the break were able to regain some composure to come home strong with a 20 to 15 win. Jemma Astley was brutal in defence for the Gropers and captain Kristy Cooper hit the afterburners to bag a hat-trick of tries in the dying minutes of the match. Rhys Cutbush, women’s sevens coach, said he was impressed with the resolve his squad showed against a fast starting Tahs team. “The girls kept their

In the next match the Gropers were full of confidence coming up against the Wanderers and overpowered their opponents to win 32 to 0. Again captain Cooper was busy with the ball scoring the first try in the opening 30 seconds. From there the Gropers shutdown the Wanderers

q The Burtles (in maroon) and the Nurtles (blue) come together after a hard fought A-grade final.
Burtles Win
IN the immortal words of Richie Benaud “marvellous stuff that!” Last Sunday saw cricket fanatics don the cream, the bone, the white, the off-white, the ivory and the beige for a super day of cricket 7s to remember and celebrate Mark Palmer at Don Waring Oval. Mark was a stalwart of the Nelson Bay Cricket Club and wider Port Stephens community contributing many hours maintaining the pitch at Don Waring whilst working tirelessly as a paramedic. In its 14th year the Mark Palmer 7s saw 12 teams come together from across the Hunter to raise the bat for a fun filled day of cricket. In the A-grade final it was the Burtles (2/76) who took the chocolates over the Nurtles (5/68) whilst full of confidence after lifting plenty over the fence and out of the esky. Highlights for the Burtles saw Brett Goodwin glove a Matthew Sharpe slog on the boundary whilst Pete Lester opened up the shoulders and topped the run tally with 38. In defeat the Nurtles’ Matt Palmer was solid with the blade middling a Jeff Sims delivery that not only went for six but also into orbit. Matt Palmer, son of the late great Mark, was humbled by the day and said the occasion was all about celebrating cricket with friends. CONTINUED Page 13
