THE 23 March New South Wales State Election has been heating up for the electorate of Port Stephens over the past couple of weeks. Multiple visits by the Premier, Ms Gladys Berejiklian and also by the Labor leader Mr Michael Daley has shown that the electorate is an important strategic seat in the upcoming election. Recent accusations of fake Facebook profiles has made this one of the more interesting political contests of our times. It was reported throughout the media that Facebook investigated a complaint from Kate Washington, current sitting member for Port Stephens, who alleged fake accounts were being used to manipulate the electoral process. It was reported that the Liberal Party lodged a counter-complaint against CONTINUED Page 2

All Gloves Are Off In Port Stephens Election Where to Vote? Campaign FROM Page 1
Ms Washington with the Electoral Commission for allegedly misusing the electoral roll to research the identity of the fake Facebook profiles. Six candidates have all put their hats into the ring for the job of representing our region in the NSW parliament. The two leaders of the pack are sitting Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington and Liberal Candidate Jaimie Abbott. Liberal Candidate Jaimie Abbott started campaigning in August and the hot topics including the immediate review of the Marine Park form part of her offering to voters. The Liberals are also behind a new TAFE Campus for Nelson Bay which Jaimie Abbott said, “The new TAFE is rather exciting, the last campus built was in Bega; and it offers 43 courses, the proposed venue will have a variety of online and practical classrooms.” We have seen more promises than ever, air conditioning in schools and a new school at Medowie from the Labor campaign, and more teaching staff from both sides.
The Liberals are also promising building repairs in schools clearing school maintenance backlogs throughout NSW by mid next year. Health in Port Stephens has also been a hot topic the Liberals have promised $780 Million to upgrade John Hunter Hospital which services much of Port Stephens and $8 million for HealthOne at Tomaree Hospital, they will offer six thousand new nurses in Hunter New England Health and 100 new Doctors for our region as well. Labor are promising a $15.2 Million dollar upgrade of Tomaree Hospital expanding services to deliver dialysis, rehabilitation and increase palliative care beds and put more nurses on the front line. Kate Washington said, “I believe in schools and hospitals before stadiums; this is more than a slogan for me it’s a core belief.” Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “Only the Liberals will build the Fingal Bay Link Rd, Nelson Bay TAFE and review the Marine Park.” Independent Bill Doran has stated that he doesn’t promise anything, but has pledged to donate 30% of his after tax salary to the Port Stephens community. The Greens statement is more cautionary, it warns the community that they must
continue to fight to keep public land in public hands, fight off over-development and work towards a solution for the PFAS issue facing Williamtown surrounds. It is now in the hands of the voters, if the promises are all delivered on Port Stephens will see great things from the next government. News Of The Area hope that the community have enough info on policies and promises from our candidates to best make an informed decision this Saturday.
This week the ballot order was drawn and the voting slip will have the following names in the following order:
1. Jaimie Abbott: Liberal 2. Bradley Jelfs: Sustainable Australia 3. Kate Washington: Country Labor 4. Bill Doran: Independent 5. Maureen Magee: The Greens 6. Theresa Taylor: Animal Justice Party

ROADS and transport have played a huge part in the Labor, Liberal and Independent Campaigns for the NSW State Election. Labor’s Kate Washington has pledged $6 million through the Party’s Fixing Regional Local Roads program as well as pledging to fix Nelson Bay Road.
While Jaimie Abbott and the Liberal Party has pledged $188 million to create the Fingal Link Road. Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Melinda Pavey said the high cost of the fully duplicated road, due to topography and environmental considerations, has not discouraged the Government from getting the job done.
q Mayor Ryan Palmer, Kate Washington MP with Cr Giacomo Arnott at the announcement of Labor Regional Roads Funding. “We recognize special measures will need to be taken to protect the wildlife and minimise impacts on the environment including water catchment issues which will be resolved to the full satisfaction of Hunter Water.” “It will not be cheap to build this road properly, but it is one of the most needed new roads in the State. It will relieve traffic bottlenecks, and will assist the Tomaree Headland communities choking on traffic over summer,” Minister Pavey said. Both Liberal and Labor parties have promises for the duplication of Nelson Bay Road with Labor pledging to see the road’s dual carriageway completed, while the

Liberals have pledged to complete the dual carriageway from Williamtown to Bob’s Farm adding to the section that they completed from Bobs Farm to Anna Bay. Both Labor and Liberal Parties have committed to fixing local roads during their campaigns. Independent Candidate Bill Doran expressed his views on the Fingal Bay Link Road, saying “I’d rather the $188 million pledged for the Fingal Bay Link Road go to a regular fast ferry service that links all points of the bay; imagine how much more involvement there would be in things if it only took 15 to 20 minutes to get from Karuah or Tea Gardens to Nelson Bay.”
BMX Pump Track for Port Stephens pump track. “It’s also in a central location so that families from Tilligerry, Williamtown and Medowie can come and give it a go for themselves. “We’re committed to investing in our community and this is something I know many have advocated for over a long period, including former Mayor Bruce MacKenzie. His passion for this project has been a driving force to achieve this wonderful outcome for the community. “I am proud to deliver this for the youth of Port Stephens — and to see it completed ahead of schedule is just the icing on the cake,” Mayor Palmer said.

SALT Ash is now home to the first BMX pump track in Port Stephens, with Mayor Ryan Palmer officially opening the track this afternoon well ahead of schedule. The track is located next to the community hall at Michael Drive, Salt Ash and has been completed in record time. Mayor Palmer says it’s a great result for the kids of Port Stephens. “This mini pump track is the first of its kind in Port Stephens! The track has an asphalt seal, rather than a traditional dirt track, which is great because kids can ride their scooters and skateboards on it as well as their bikes. “I know the community has been waiting a long time for this, so it’s wonderful to be able to officially open the track ahead of schedule. “We’re creating a mini recreation hub for the community at Salt Ash — we have the community hall, the playground and now the

Wining and Dining
By Marian SAMPSON
THE members of the Fingal Bay Probus Club really like to be beside the seaside. They recently spent some time wining and dining in their own backyard, Fingal Bay. It’s a breeze for the members of Fingal Bay Probus Club with Salt Water restaurant on the doorstep, overlooking the beautiful Fingal Bay. Some members even strolled down the Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving Club to attend
the dinner event. The Club has also visited other Fingal Bay and Peninsula restaurants in an effort to hunt down the best fish and chips, and luscious desserts. The breezes were at work at their recent outing when the wild wind meant farewell to the planned predinner drinks on the beautiful balcony. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “Naturally the fun and friendship enjoyed by all Probus members was still flourishing, enhanced by the
mouth-watering menu.” Fingal Bay Probus Club meets on the second Monday of every month at 9.30am at The Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. Future members and guests are welcome to these meetings to learn more about a club that thrives on friendship and fun, and offers a selection of activities and a variety of guest speakers. The Probus club has a book club, enjoys BBQ’s, walks and other outings.

Dear Denise,
The Dry Spell has ruined my gardens, I don’t know where to start to fix it. GD Medowie
ALTHOUGH we are entering Autumn & you can already feel the nights & mornings starting to cool down, it has been an incredibly dry spell. There are numerous back yards & gardens suffering in the area at present, so know that at least you’re not alone. I would suggest that if your plants are burnt from the recent heatwave, ensure that they at least look tidy. Remove any plants or shrubs that are already dead. Trim back ones that have browned off or have dead sections or tips. Ensure all garden beds & lawns are weed free. Remove weeds between paver cracks. Do your driveway or pathway areas require a gurney? Your footpath & driveway are one of the first impressions a prospective purchaser takes in. Replace any potted plants now with some pretty colours that match your homes exterior colour theme. Purchase some new pots to brighten things up. It’s all about being proactive, keeping on top of things & viewing your property with fresh eyes at all times. Don’t become complacent & think that nobody will notice the small things.
Dear Jasminda,
Am I wrong to be praising the boy who egged a senator recently?
Plaza Plans
SOME 150 residents attended a meeting at Club Lemon Tree on Thursday 14th March. They listened to a representative of the owners and the architect of a proposed redevelopment of the Tilligerry Plaza site. Steve Lambourne said that over the years,
Hope this helps Denise
Mr JK, Hawks Nest
Dear Mr JK,
several proposals had not come to fruition but with financial backing for the current plan, the development should proceed. Architect Warwick Lindsay explained that his design for the 100 unit ‘Seniors Village’ met with all council development requirements and q Warwick Lindsay’s development plan.
that modifications could be made after community consultation. For years now the derilict site has become an eyesore and the focus of community protest meetings. It has fallen victim to vandals and the fire brigade has been called on several occasions to extinguish deliberately lit blazes inside the building.
I’VE watched the video of this incident several times, most recently I watched it over my breakfast of scrambled eggs, and what I see is a complete overreaction by a group of thugs to a boy who is clearly not putting them in any sort of physical danger. I think there’s something that goes much deeper with this egging. Apart from the senator’s head being the perfect cracking surface (I’ve had more trouble cracking eggs on my stone benchtop), an egg is a life-giving symbol. In many cultures eggs signify rebirth or new life. Eggs also represent fragility. Compare this to the event that was the catalyst for this senator’s most recent racist comments. In that event, the weapon of choice was a gun, several in fact. This is symbolic of aggression and anger – a death-giving symbol as evidenced by the horrific slaughter of people at their most vulnerable. We are currently in an era when our children are feeling increasingly desperate about adults who seem to have completely lost the plot on humanity. John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ makes a lot of sense at the moment. I apologise, Mr JK, for not being terribly funny this week, but even Jasminda gets overwhelmed. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

By Marian SAMPSON
SAIL Port Stephens has a range of events around it and one is run by ‘Women Who Sail’, a women’s network with over 3600 members. The Gathering on the Bay (GOTB) offers ladies who sail an opportunity for members to gather and learn together. Three days of workshops and seminars will be held at the Bay from 5-7 April where 100 women come will from around Australia and New Zealand.
Annette Hesselmans, who competed in the two-handed (ie only 2 people aboard) 2018 Melbourne to Osaka race and skippered her boat with an all-women crew in the recent Melbourne to Hobart race will be sharing her experience. Other topics this year include workshops on VHF radio, outboard engine maintenance, cooking on a boat, marine flares, and radar. Presentations include Wheelchair bound sailor Renee Smith from Sailors with DisAbilities, a talk on marine debris, a forum on sailing in the Mediterranean.
Founder of ‘Women Who Sail’ Shelley Wright told News Of The Area, “The key speakers this year are: Lisa Blair, a record breaking solo sailor who was the first woman to sail solo around Antarctica with her most recent accomplishment being the first woman to sail solo, non-stop around Australia.” Torre DeRoche, an author of two memoirs that deal with fear ‘Love with a chance of drowning’ and ‘The worrier’s guide to the end of the world’ will also be speaking.
The event itself is for women only, however men are invited to attend the social events. Marine Rescue Port Stephens runs a ‘Partners’ Program’ at their base on the Saturday for the men, with topics such as CPR and VHF radios. Money raised by the event is divided between Marine Rescue Port Stephens and Sailors With DisAbilities. All women interested in boats are welcome you can find out more at www. womenwhosailaustralia.com

Election Apology
I Bill Doran, the Independent candidate for the seat of Port Stephens, would like to APOLOGISE to the greater Port Stephens community for following my rivals down the Nelson Bay spending “Rabbit hole”. Port Stephens is more than Nelson Bay and funding of programs should reflect this. This is why I pledge to lobby for comparative spending between Nelson Bay and the rest of the electorate. This will ensure growth and deliver those long needed improvements across the whole of our great electorate. Authorised by Bill Doran, Independent candidate for the seat of Port Stephens. 11 Lloyd George Grove, Tanilba Bay, NSW 2319

IT IS a long road to the Tokyo Paralympics but para-equestrian Sharon Jarvis is on her way. Ms Jarvis, is originally from Western Australia and is now based at Heatherbrae, where she trains with Olympians Heath and Rozzie Ryan. Ms Jarvis took another step forward in her quest for Paralympic selection when she and Arabian Warmblood stallion, Lord Lamarque, who is owned by Jade Edwards, headed to Boneo Park in Victoria to compete at the Australian Arabian National Championships. With Ms Jarvis in the saddle, against big fields including former champions, Lord Lamarque won Gold in the Ridden Arabian Warmblood and Arabian Derivative Small or Large Hack classes. They also contested the Elementary dressage competition with 4th place in the 3B and 2nd in the 3C tests. Ms Jarvis was surprised and thrilled to win Silver in the overall point score for the Championships. Ms Jarvis said, “Lord Lamarque is a wonderful horse and he gave me some of his best work at this competition.” “I feel very lucky to partner with this amazing horse and his owner Jade Edwards to pursue my quest for Paralympic selection.” Ms Jarvis is no stranger to the rigors of elite competition having won numerous State and National Championships competing in able bodied equestrian events. Diagnosed with bone cancer at seven and
given only a 20% chance of survival, Ms Jarvis went into remission the following year but as a result has limited strength and movement of her left side from the hip down. In 2006 she started career in Paraequestrian competitions, representing Australia at the 2007 FEI World Para-equestrian Dressage Championships in Gloucestershire, England. From here, Ms Jarvis was selected for the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky where she won Bronze medals in the
