Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer talks about the bush fire disasters FROM Page 1
that doesnโt mean we can get complacent. If you havenโt already, now is the time to make a bush fire survival plan so youโll know what to do if an emergency arises. The Rural Fire Service website has a simple guide to help you rfs. nsw.gov.au
Itโs important to plan now for what youโll do. Sit down and talk with your family about when to leave, what to take and what to do with animals. Donโt leave it to the last minute, as emergencies can happen with little or no warning. There are simple things you can do around your home to prepare it for a bush fire, like
keeping the grass low, the gutters clear and having a cleared area around your home. These things should be done well beforehand, as leaving it to the last minute is too late. If an emergency should arise, we have developed the Port Stephens Emergency Dashboard, which gives you real-time updates on road closures, power outages, weather warnings and evacuation
crisis.โ โUNICEF has highlighted the direct threat climate change has on the ability of children to survive grow, and thrive.โ Climate Action Port Stephens, is a community group
of residents who are concerned about the global climate and ecological crisis. They will be taking action with the Australian Parents for Climate Action on 20 November for World Childrenโs Day.
Christmas Lights for Charity By Heather SHARP
NOVEMBER 20 is World Childrenโs Day. It is celebrated annually on 20 November and is UNICEFโs global day of action for children and led by children. 20 November is an important date and this year will mark the 60th Anniversary of the adoption of the Convention of the Rights of the Child in 1959. Ms Alisha Onslow, cofounder of Climate Action Port Stephens told News Of The Area, โThis year, Australian Parents for Climate Action, are holding a National Week of Action across the Nation highlighting the rights of children in a safe climate.โ โThey will be calling on the Australian Government to act urgently to safeguard the future of children by taking immediate action to address the climate
centres. You can find it at portstephens.nsw.gov.au Most of all, remember to look out for one another. Share information with your family, friends, neighbours and those who might need some help. Port Stephens is an amazing community and we all need to come together in times of emergency to keep each other safe. They will be meeting on the corner of William and Adelaide Streets, Raymond Terrace at 12noon. Together, they will walk down William Street and gather at Riverside Park for a picnic and speeches. The community is invited to attend.

School donation to Brigade
media@newsofthearea.com.au
THE P&C of Karuah Public School donated water and drinks and food to the Karuah Rural Fire Brigade. The Brigade has been very active with strike teams to Taree and Nabiac over the last few weeks. Jim Semple from Karuah Rural Fire Brigade said, โThis donation will help replace used rations.โ โWe really appreciate this donation,โ he said.

services off the Tomaree Peninsula. The Real Futures Foundation is a privately funded charity which supports Port Stephens youth in their transition from school to employment. We are hosting a BareFoot Bowls event at Fingal Bay Sports Club on November 28 from 6pm. This fun activity requires no bowls experience, just a willingness to have a go. Deputy Chair of the Real Futures Foundation Bob Westbury told News Of The Area, โWe are excited to be launching
the Latitude One BareFoot Bowls event to raise funds for our youths. โItโs something different and the entry fee is an extremely reasonable $18 which is fully tax deductible as the charity has full deductible gift recipient status with the Tax Office.โ He believes that supporting local youth is very important. โWhen our youth feel the support of their community and have great opportunities they are empowered, thatโs what the Foundation does, it empowers our youth to have an โI canโ attitude to go with the skills they are developing.โ The Foundation
delivers a range of programs including communications skills, upskilling, and offers unique opportunities to those students at risk of falling through the cracks. Recent successes include the Salamander Bay Recycling Centreโs Practical Maths program which has seen students learn vital maths for life including household budgeting and understanding the benefits of first principal shopping versus buying pre-prepared meals. Each year the Foundation is supported by local service organisations including the Lions Club of Soldiers
Point, Rotary Club of Salamander Bay and the Masonic Lodges. We also conduct fundraising activities to boost funds to deliver programs to meet the needs of students. โI invite everyone to register to participate in this event and come along to Fingal Bay Sports Club on 28 November and support our local youth,โ he said.

Sausage Sarnies Create STEM Education Opportunities By Marian SAMPSON
SOLDIERS Point Public School is tucked away in a beautiful bushland setting, somewhat out of sight out of mind for many of us. The students benefit from their environment which is adjacent to Stoney Ridge Reserve. When it comes to fundraising sometimes being out of sight and out of mind makes things that little bit harder. Recently the Lions Club of Soldiers Point, with the assistance of Bunnings at Taylors Beach, donated a barbeque to the school that the Parents and Citizens Association (P & C) can use to fundraise with the all Australian Sausage Sizzle. Relieving Principal Louisa De Souza was excited to see the barbeque being put together by the local Lions, she told News Of The Area, โItโs great having the Lions give us the opportunity to raise funds for things that we can use in and around the school for the students, providing books and sporting equipment and STEM technology.โ Humble sausage sandwiches are being turned into STEM learning coding opportunities with the P & C purchasing Ozone Bots and Lego We Doโs for the students
the new barbeque will make it easier to cater at the school fundraising events. โThe students have just had a ball playing and learning with these

Christmas Giving Tree
By Heather SHARP
WITH natural disasters ravaging the State at the moment, it can be difficult to know what to do to help those in need. Irrawang High School has teamed up with Rural Aid to provide material goods for farmers in need. Rural Aid was started in 2015 and it aims to support rural communities, especially farmers. The founders of Rural Aid also established the Buy A (Hay) Bale initiative in 2013 before branching out into larger areas of support. As part of Rural Aidโs

Bush Christmas Appeal For Farmers, Irrawang HS has placed a Christmas giving tree in the school office foyer and is inviting the community to make donations. They would appreciate personal care items such as shampoo and conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, sanitary items, moisturiser, sunscreen, shaving cream, and other similar items. Vice Captain Abbey Everingham told News Of The Area, โThe purpose of the giving tree is to aid the farmers in need, by supplying them with items such as personal care items.โ
โWe would love to support the farmers and this year our school community is supporting families in the Murrurundi area who are suffering.โ โOur students and teachers and school community are always ready to get involved in fundraisers and have always been more than generous to collect for families in need.โ โLast year we raised money for Rural Aid and the Buy a Bale campaign, so we were happy to support farmers in the Upper Hunter again.โ โWe would love the community to help out and they are more than welcome
to come in to the school to donate items for our farmers.โ Vice Captain Luke Allanson told News Of The Area, โStudents at our school have a very positive attitude to the giving tree and are more than happy to donate personal care items.โ โWe think of these personal care items as everyday items but farmers regard them as q School leaders, Vice Captains Luke Allanson and Abbey Everingham support the Bush Christmas Appeal For Farmers. luxuries, so we are very happy to help those in need.โ of the community donated happy.โ โAnything to brighten up $8272 in cash and about 50 Last year Irrawang High their Christmas will make us School with the support big boxes of products.
There are other things you can do to help animals particularly koalas over the summer. Koalas can drown in a pool, so a stout rope being draped into your pool could be a lifesaver. If you see a Koala needing care call 0418 PSKOALAS or 0418 775 625 in Port Stephens. Port Stephens Koalas spokesperson urged drivers to โPlease slow down if
driving, especially from dusk to dawn, and keep an eye out for koalas, they have no road sense at all and are hard to see at night.โ Rescues of koalas are more common wherever habitat has been disturbed. We have had several calls to the Medowie region in the last month, the first in many years. As areas continue to be developed, koalas will be seen in the middle of suburbia, as
well as on roads, as they try to find mates during breeding season and will come to grief on roads, and with dogs, as they travel. Male koalas in spring roam looking for mates and at this time they are often spotted crossing roads. Young males are particularly at risk as they need to find their own territory away from others. If a koala is involved in a vehicle strike it is important

RESIDENTS of Port Stephens are being urged to keep an eye on the weather and think of the wildlife on days with extreme heat. All animals are at risk of dehydration, just as we are. that they receive care. Port Stephens Koalas believe it is important that koalas are not chased up trees after they are hit, as they can climb even when severely injured. While the construction of Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary and Hospital is underway, Port Stephens Koalas do not have an income stream to help us with our ongoing care and medical expenses, fuel for
rescues and leafing trips, or any other day-to-day items. We still need the communityโs financial support. Please adopt, donate, become a volunteer or even buy one of our Koala Carerโs Books a great gift. All items can be purchased on the https:// portstephenskoalas.com. au

Special Visitor at Regis Snake Season is Here Aged Care By Julie McKimm
SUMMER is fast approaching and with it comes the increased incidence of snakes in our backyards. Some of the most common in our area being the eastern brown snake, red bellied black snake, rough scale snake, yellow faced whip snake and diamond python. There are many misconceptions about snakes and their behaviour so News Of The Area contacted one of Medowieโs snake enthusiasts, Dylan Stuart, for advice on what to do if you come across a snake.
By Julie McKimm
RECENTLY the team from Hunter Horse Haven visited Regis Aged Care Facility with a special visitor for the residents, Stormie, the pony. Stormie brought smiles to many of the elderly residents who loved and enjoyed his visit. Stormie visited every floor via the elevator, which didnโt faze him at all provided there was a steady supply of carrots for him to munch on. He happily walked into tight spaces to visit infirm residents that were unable to rise from their beds to touch him, squeezing between furniture and walkers and having to back out of tight spaces.
q Stormie receiving plenty of attention during a recent visit to Regis Aged Care in Corlette.
Dylan told News of the Area โNo snake is dangerous. They arenโt aggressive and 100% will not chase you. They are shy animals and will defend themselves if needed, that is mistaken for aggression. All snakes will react to movement which results in them being defensive. Their first plan of action is to get away as quick as possible. Out of the hundreds of snakes Iโve caught, not once have I been chased or had aggression shown to me.โ He added, โIf a snake is in your yard, remove all humans and pets from the
President of Hunter Horse Haven, Debbie Barber told News Of The Area, โHe gave cuddles to many like he knew what he was doing was important and provided happiness and soothed the soul. A massive thank-you must go to Ayva and Michelle who volunteered to help and ensured everything went smoothly. Also thank-you to the girls who fed the horses today back at the Haven and the staff at Regis Retirement Village for organising the visit.โ Hunter Horse Haven volunteer their time to give back to the local community in thanks for their caring support. If anyone would like to sponsor Stormie, sponsorship is $12.50 per week or a tax deductible donation is appreciated. Please contact Hunter Horse Haven on their Facebook page or email hunterhorsehaven@gmail.com for details. A day brightening the lives of our elderly is worth its weight in gold.

area. Keep at a safe distance, call a catcher and watch the snake. Do not try to scare it away, catch it or kill it as that increases your chance of being bitten by 90%.โ Killing one snake allows up to 10,000 rodents to reproduce in a year. Other misconceptions around snakes are that red bellied black snakes keep away brown snakes, which they donโt and that snake repellents on the market keep them away, again they donโt. Isabella Nichols Wins By Marian SAMPSON
q Isabella Nichols carving her way to victory at the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) win, taking out the 2019 Port Stephens Toyota Pro presented by Sisstrevolution QS6,000 in Port Stephens. Photo by Ethan SMith Surfing NSW.
AT BIRUBI Beach on Sunday, 17 November 2019 Australian Isabella Nichols clinched her first major World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) win, taking out the 2019 Port Stephens Toyota Pro presented by Sisstrevolution QS6,000. Nichols took down fellow Australian Macy Callaghan in the 35-minute final where the two went toe-to-toe in clean three-to-four foot waves for the last WSL Womenโs QS event of the 2019 season. After finishing runner-up in the first two QS6,000 events of the year, Nichols was placed in a solid position to qualify for the elite Championship Tour and locked in her spot with a few events to go in the season. The only boxes left to tick were a major event win, and, to take the title of QS Champion for 2019. Her Port Stephens win gifted Nichols with both of these goals. โWords canโt even explain what Iโm CONTINUED Page 11
