Character Parade By Heather SHARP
BOOK Week came early for Raymond Terrace Public School and Irrawang Public School this week. In the lead up to the annual week’s celebration of books and reading, the two schools have had their Book Week parade. For decades, school students across Australia have participated in school book week parades and while new characters pop up every few years, there are also some perennial favourites. Where’s Wally and Dr Seuss characters have been joined in more recent years with Harry Potter and Marvel super heroes. ‘Reading Is My Secret Power’ is the theme of this year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia event.

Ms Washington is also pushing to increase the range of services on offer at Tomaree Community Hospital, especially dialysis and the need for additional nursing staff the palliative care unit. In relation to her Environment and Heritage responsibility Ms Washington listed the following matters receiving her attention; managing feral animals impacting on Kosciusko National Park; proposals to remove the protection of river red gums from logging in the Murray Valley National Park; continuing destruction of

Marine Rescue Visit the Hawkesbury
By Marian SAMPSON
MARINE Rescue Port Stephens (MRPS) is a volunteer based organisation. At the MRPS’ May Mess meeting the guest speaker was Gino Pin, once the Senior Captain for the Riverboat Postman on the Hawkesbury River. His story was so interesting that the Unit Commander thought it would be a great social outing for our members. Tony O’Donnell told News Of The Area, “People join Marine Rescue for many reasons. “The most driving factor is the wish to give back something to the community.” He believes that others have the additional motivation of learning new skills, or in putting current skills to a useful purpose. “All want the companionship that an organisation like Marine Rescue offers,” he said. The Unit’s social committee organises a number

of social functions throughout the year so that members can socialise and enjoy each other’s company. The trip on the Riverboat Postman was one such occasion where around 60 members and some partners joined the bus to the Hawkesbury River. The Riverboat Postman is a formal Australian Post Office service which commenced in
1910. Today it still delivers mail to the river communities such as Dangar Island as it did back in the early days. The Skipper gives a fascinating commentary throughout the journey along the river focusing on life today as well as a rich and fascinating history. A big surprise for the MRPS

group was being shown the wreck of HMAS Parramatta on the banks of the river. This was the first Naval Ship purchased for the Royal Australian Navy in 1910 and it saw service in the Gallipoli area (Suvla Bay) during WWI. It also served in New Guinea where it was on patrol with the Submarine AE1 when it was lost.
Our boat crew members on-board naturally took the opportunity to quiz the Skipper on boat things. The outing was great for the members of MRPS providing the opportunity to share such a fascinating experience with each other. MRPS is a 24/7/365 organisation. The service to those who
go out on the water never stops. Most of the time, although we are busy, the work can be routine. In an emergency, the pressure is on. Although we have a membership of about 200 people, due to rostering and the various job functions, we can go months without seeing an individual member.

RENOVATING WITHOUT OVER CAPITALISING This is such an important question to consider when you’re renovating to sell in a relatively short timeframe. Over-capitalising means that with your renovations, you have improved your property beyond its resale value - aka you’ve spent too much! Firstly understand the current market value of your property by securing an appraisal from a registered real estate agent. Compare the current appraisal a gainst what you paid for the property. If you use a figure of say 10% of the market valuation as your renovation budget, you’ve got a good starting point. Look at feature areas: bathroom, kitchen, outdoor areas plus energy saving features such as solar and water tanks. Renovate with potential buyers in mind. Adding a swimming pool may not be the winner you think. In today’s water conscious environment, the cost of maintaining a pool may well be a turnoff. Your home’s layout and design are vital to renovating success. Make sure your plans are functional, select the right builder and trades and stick to your budget. We’ve all had renovation disasters, but careful planning and preparation will help minimize the tears. Now, how about that market appraisal?!
Christianity Explained OPINION
Dear News Of The Area, CHRISTIANITY often gets a bad press these days. Often rightly so, due to the child abuse scandals that have brought parts of the Christian Church into disrepute. But the big questions of life have remained unchanged. “Who am I?” “What is the meaning of life?” and “What happens when we die?” Interestingly, many people who never give a thought to God, believe, or at

EMAILS and texts are wonderful forms of communication because you can write them from the comfort of your home, your hammock, or your condo in the Maldives, and still come across as a semiprofessional. If you can string a sentence together, you are set. The great thing about written communication, as your solicitor may have told you, is you have a cold, hard record of what has transpired. It is handy when people try to sabotage your reputation through omission or twisting the facts. If you have a transcript, you can whip it out at a meeting and observe them as they turn a whiter shade of pale. You need to maintain your professionalism in this instance, Mr LC, but feel free to internally sing a joyous ‘Watch me whip, watch me nae, nae’ rendition at their clear discomfort. Ooh, watch me, watch me; Ooh watch me . . . gosh, sorry, Mr LC, you lost me for a moment there, but I’m back, thankfully before I got to the stanky leg, which may have strained my hip flexor. The problem with written communication, is, of course, the lack of external cues. You can’t be attuned to eye rolls or crossed arms or flushed faces, or neighbourly nudges. You can’t be on the alert to changes in tone and inflection. As with oncoming cars, if you can’t see the whites of someone’s eyes, you can’t really know what their next move will be. Texts are even more fraught. Concision can be an issue. So can emojis, as this casual vegan discovered when she texted that she’d be doing something with an eggplant for the next staff function. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

High Tea Success
GUSTING high winds and and a winter cold snap did not deter the 104 guests who turned up at the Tanilba House inaugural Colonial High Tea recently. Over two sessions, they were treated to a cultural experience which included fine dining in an elegant setting. This was followed by a tour of the recently restored property and a talk about the history of the Caswell pioneers who built the homestead.
Included in those present were Graham and Linda Caswell. They had brought with them the Caswell family sword and bible which they put on display. According to owner Glenn Short, the ‘High Tea’ was such a success that it will become a regular feature at Tanilba House. “We have two more already booked out and we see it as part of our future plans for events which will include weddings, corporate

It has recently undergone a complete restoration to bring it back to its former glory. The Heritage Council has been consulted to ensure authenticity. A major makeover of the grounds and gardens has also been done which highlights the convict built structure.

Destination of choice for domestic tourists
PORT Stephens continues to be a destination of choice for domestic tourists, with the latest data showing strong growth in the number of visitors and length of stay. The National Visitor Survey, conducted by Tourism Research Australia for year ending March 2019, shows Port Stephens welcomed 805,000 overnight visitors who stayed almost 2.6 million nights. This represents a 7% increase in overnight visitors and a 17% increase in visitor nights compared to year ending March 2018. One of the key areas of growth is interstate visitor nights which has increased by 40% — mainly from Victoria. Destination Port Stephens CEO Eileen Gilliland says it’s encouraging to see growing numbers of domestic tourists choosing Port Stephens. “We know that the average
overnight visitor spends $205 per night in Port Stephens, so even a small increase in visitor nights has a significant effect on the local economy,” Ms Gilliland said. “We are still waiting on data for visitor spend however, based on our current understanding, this increase in domestic visitor nights would have injected more than $70 million into the Port Stephens economy. “This trickles down from our cafes and restaurants, hotels and tour operators through to the wider Port Stephens economy. “Destination Port Stephens is currently working in partnership with a number of local businesses to invest in a major marketing strategy to increase shoulder and low season visitation. This new brand will work to even out the seasonal fluctuations and increase the economic benefit
across Port Stephens.” Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says it’s a fantastic result that is delivering great benefit for the local economy. “Port Stephens Council recognises the economic, environmental and social benefits that a vibrant and sustainable tourism industry provides,” Mayor Palmer said. “It’s fantastic to see more domestic visitors choosing Port Stephens, which means increased employment, investment and infrastructure for our locals and businesses.” Key domestic visitor statistics for year ending March 2019 compared to 2018 •Total domestic overnight visitors — 805,000 (up 7% from 755,000) •Domestic visitor nights — 2,599,000 (up 17% from
This year the event will be held at Horizons Golf Resort at Salamander Bay on 18 October, with the prize pool totaling over $110,000. There are three separate hole in one prizes, $60,000 in cash on the 17th, a boat with
all the gear valued at $20,000 from Bay Boat Sales on the 6th and a Port Stephens Toyota Yaris on the 15th. On top of this there are four holidays up for grabs and plenty of great prizes for the winning teams.

The event is in its third year and has enjoyed great support from local business and the community. This year the Foundation is hoping to field 144 players on the day which will raise funds which go towards programs in Port Stephens high schools which assist students in their transition from school to employment.
The Foundation relies upon corporate sponsorships, fundraising and donations to deliver programs to local youth. Real Futures Foundation Director Bob Westbury told News Of The Area, “It’s going to be a great day of golf whether you are a regular player or someone just getting behind the charity on the day.” Entry fees are a tax
deductible donation making this a great opportunity to do good for the local community while having fun. The event is currently seeking hole sponsors, more prizes and players. If you would like to be a part of this great day contact the Foundation at info@ realfutures.com.au or call 0459 333 851.

Extreme Trail Run By Marian SAMPSON
EXTREME sports are the new wave in fitness and experiencing the outdoors. On 21-22 September Port Stephens is hosting a weekend of off-road action which will see triathletes and trail runners compete on the beaches and in the bushland surrounding Fingal and Shoal Bay. The TreX Series event which will be held at the Bay is the first round of the national Trex Cross Triathlon Series. Competitors will swim, mountain bike and trail run in a race to the finish line on at Fingal Bay Beach. The TreX series has long been at the forefront of this unique form of triathlon in Australia which takes the traditional format of the sport and mixes it with a huge helping of heart, guts and dirt, where the challenge is as much with mother nature as it is against other athletes.

TreX Port Stephens contenders will tackle a challenging 1,000m swim in beautiful Fingal Bay, followed by 25km of heart pumping XC (Cross Country) mountain biking in Tomaree National Park, and then finishing off with an 8km trail run experiencing the expansive coastal vistas that Port Stephens is famed for. The event also includes sprint, junior, teaser and dirt kids courses with something for all ages and abilities. TreX Port Stephens will be coupled with round one of Trail Run Australia, a national trail running series which takes runners to some of Australia’s most iconic and spectacular destinations. Runners will tackle one of three course options including a half marathon, 11.5k or 6k trail run based around the Fingal Bay coastline and Tomaree National Park. The course holds some special experiences for athletes

as Event Director Robyn Lazenby told News Of The Area, “Events start at beautiful Fingal Bay and challenge athletes with a diverse array of terrain and scenery. “From the beauty of Tomaree National Park, to the expansive views from coastal trails, to the challenge of the Samurai Dunes and awe inspiring white sandy beaches this course showcases the very best of this spectacular region. “Athletes might even see one of the many migrating Humpback or Southern Right Whales, or a friendly school of dolphins along the way,” she said. The Bay offers a perfect backdrop for off road triathlon and trail running making it an ideal weekend for hardcore racers, weekend warriors, families or those who just want to get into the great outdoors to visit one of Australia’s most scenic regions and enjoy the challenge of off road racing. The festival is proudly supported by Port Stephens Council. Entries are now open for competitors. Find out more at www. in2adventure.com.au
