Hawaiian Theme Gathers a Crowd By Heather SHARP
THE much loved and anticipated annual breast cancer and red kite fundraiser was held at the Williamtown Union Hall on Saturday, 19 October. One of the most popular fundraising events on the Portโs social calendar, the event was sold out weeks before it took place. News Of The Area spoke with fundraising coordinator, Ms Natalie Davidson who said, โMy girlfriends
and I have been doing this for about ten years.โ โWe know people who have had breast cancer and this is a great way to raise money to support the cause.โ โMy girlfriends and I love doing parties and organising this is fun.โ At time of print, the full tally of funds raised had not yet been counted, but Ms Davidson is confident that this yearโs efforts

Appeal Upheld for Len Roberts
FROM Page 16
While Mr Roberts was leaving under police direction protestors rushed stood in front of Mr Roberts car. A protestor claimed Mr Roberts had run him over. Mr. Roberts was arrested and charged by Police despite insisting he โwas the victim not the perpetratorโ. Following a 2-day hearing in the Local Court, Mr. Roberts was found guilty of common assault- however, because of the extenuating circumstances the court did not proceed to a conviction. Despite there being no conviction, Mr. Roberts insisted that an immediate appeal against the finding of guilt be made, and this occurred. Solicitor Greg McInnes, acting for Mr Roberts, said advised that, in a Ruling delivered by HH Judge Gartelman SC on 15 October 2019, the Appeals Court ordered that the appeal be
allowed on all grounds. Mr McInnes stated that the decision was โso unequivocalโ that it was ordered that โall orders of the Local Court be quashedโ. โNo element of the Local Court decision was allowed to stand,โ he said. โThis brings the matter to utter finality. There is no further avenue of appeal available to the Crown,โ Mr McInnes said. โThe judgement delivered was both succinct and decisive. The quashing of the Local Court orders was without reservation and is an unequivocal victory for Cr Roberts,โ said Mr Mcinnes. Cr Roberts thanked his family, legal team and many supporters. โI am pleased this matter has been finalised and vindicates my position.โ Me Roberts said, โI am intent now upon pursuing my defamation action against [Manning newspaper] others, who allowed false assertions against me to be perpetrated and published in such a malicious way.โ โThis result further strengthens our case,โ Mr Roberts said. โI strongly believe it is important

PBL Kids Awards are back for Term 4 By Heather SHARP
PBL is a program used by many schools to encourage student wellbeing and behaviour. It is supported by the Department of Education, NSW. Handing out this weekโs award was Ms Lauren Hair from Steve Bates Real Estate. Ms Hair has worked and volunteered on community projects for a number of years and she said her recent involvement with the PBL program has left her impressed with the results in the schools and the wider community. This week, Xavier Vaughan, a Year 1 student at Wirreanda Public School was invited to fundraise at MarketPlace during the PBL awards and weekly raffles. His stall, Xavierโs Dream Treasures, sells keyrings, necklaces, and magnets that he has personally designed and created. With affirming phrases like Itโs Cool To Be Kind, the products send positive messages to the community.
q Students, their teachers, and guest presenter Lauren Hair.
All funds raised support Australia For Cambodia a charity that provides school resources, sporting equipment, and water filtration systems to children, families, and communities in need. Mackenzie England, Grahamstown Public School: Mackenzie handed out flyers in the community to promote the Grahamstown Public School 25th anniversary fair. Jessica Vanderlinde, Medowie Public School: For
assisting students during the Showcase at Irrawang High School. Jessica was observed helping younger students in the holding rooms and in escorting students around the grounds. Miya Boyes, Irrawang High School: Nominated for being an outstanding citizen of Irrawang High School, demonstrating respect for and of others on school transport. Jorja Morrison, Raymond Terrace Public School: Jorja displayed outstanding
sportsmanship towards players, referees, and visitors when representing Raymond Terrace Public School in the recent state Girlsโ Rugby League finals in Sydney. Kye Butler, Seaham Public School: Kye looks after the environment at Seaham. He has been nominated several times for picking up rubbish and ensuring that our playground is neat and tidy. Eli White, Irrawang Public School: Eli was nominated by a PCYC boxing trainer for
always listening, following instructions, and working well with other children. Avah Watt, Karuah Public School: Avah always has such a positive attitude and consistently tries her best in everything she does. Avah is receiving this award for her kind a friendly nature. She is a great friend and is often seen helping her peers in the playground. Avah makes sure she goes to the principalโs office of a morning to say hello.
For 25 years, David Engwicht has been helping towns around the world transform tired, underused and unappreciated public spaces into vibrant community hubs. โI was frustrated โ processes often got bogged down in endless committee meetings and good people would throw up their hands and give up. I watched in dismay as innovative projects were often killed off by the town naysayers,โ Mr
Engwicht said. โSo to overcome these problems, I created the 7 Day Makeover. โThe secret to the success of the 7 Day Makeover is that itโs driven by the public and works on an impossibly short time-line with a very limited budget, so it doesnโt get bogged down in meetings and processes,โ he said. David said he is constantly surprised by what communities can
Keira Croft, Hunter River High: Nominated for keeping our environment clean. After school, Keira was seen collecting lots of litter between the school and the service station. Jack Moyle, Salt Ash Public School: Consistently following our school PBL values of being a positive, respectful, and safe learner in all settings. Jack always goes out of his way to include other students in activities ensuring no one is left out.
Seven Day Summer Make Over set for December
ANNA Bay is getting a 7 Day Makeover this summer, with the town set to be transformed on a shoestring budget, powered by the community. The makeover is scheduled for 30 November 2019 โ 7 December 2019. Created by David Engwicht from Creative Communities, the 7 Day Makeover empowers communities to improve their places and spaces, aligning with a key direction of Councilโs
Community Strategic Plan โ strong economy, vibrant communities and active investment. Inspired by the results of the 7 Day Makeover in neighbouring Mid Coast council area, Central Ward Councillor Sarah Smith saw the programโs potential for Anna Bay and brought a Notice of Motion for the proposal to council in August 2019, which was supported unanimously. โThis is such an exciting
opportunity for Anna Bay,โ Cr Smith said. โWe have a proud and active community and this is the perfect program to help us call on that people-power from with Anna Bay โ and all around Port Stephens โ to make some real, tangible changes in our beautiful town. โDavid will teach us a whole new way to create great public spaces that is cheaper and delivers instant results,โ she said.
achieve in just 7 days. โIt is often 700% better than I imagined in my wildest dreams,โ he said. Cr Smith is encouraging anyone and everyone to register their interest. โI want people of all ages and abilities to participate, even if they can only give one hour โ everyone is welcome. The better we work together, the more chance we have to make better places and better spaces here in Port Stephens,โ Cr Smith said.

THE Latitude One Real Futures Foundation Charity Golf Day was held on 18 October. Local businesses were the strong supporters of the event where players enjoyed a great day of golf with perks like Henkell Trocken โchampersโ and Murrays beer. Over $115,000 in cash and prizes were up for grabs and while the hole in one prizes of a Port Stephens Toyota, a Bay Boat Sales Boat and the $60,000 in cash didnโt go off every other prize was claimed. The players were not really there to win the cash, rather to support the youth of Port Stephens. The Real Futures Foundation exists solely to support the youth of Port Stephens in their transition from school to employment. BREAST cancer is one of the most common cancers in the nation with 1 in 7 women and 1 in 675 men expected to be diagnosed with the disease according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). The cancer kills eight women everyday in Australia and thatโs why the NBCF is taking up the fight and aiming to reach zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. Portโs Artists Exhibit Works By Marian SAMPSON
EXHIBITION to Coincide with Tateyama Sister City Anniversary and Tomaree THE Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is celebrating all things arts during the lead up to the festive season. Alongside the Fabulous Fakes exhibition the centre is currently holding an exhibition that celebrates distant destinations with Memories of Our Travels. To coincide with Port Stephens Sister City 10th Anniversary with Tateyama in Japan local artists will put on a display of memories of their travels which will represent Australian as well as International works of art. Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, โOur Artisans have been busy creating wonderful Christmas crafts, hampers as well as decorations.โ In this busy tie there are also two feature artists at the Centre Therese Smithโs works will be displayed from 23 October followed by Meryl Millerโs works from 13 November. Therese has always loved the creative world.
q Theresa Smith with one of her artworks.
Through a journey of raising a family and finishing her Uni degree, followed by a 20 year career of paid work in Canberra, then 3 years of motorhome travel around Australia before retiring in Port Stephens; she now has the time and space to create her own art. During the last 4 years Therese has attended many art workshops held at the Port Stephens Community Art Centre and Tomaree Community College, working mainly in acrylic, watercolour, gouache and pen. More recently she has enjoyed the adventures of painting retreats in the S.A Flinders Ranges and the NSW Watagan Ranges.
The knowledge absorbed through these experiences has encouraged the freedom for Therese to explore new styles of painting, and she is particularly drawn to an abstract way of seeing. She loves to push colour beyond representation and has been encouraged on this journey by winning a Highly Commended Encouragement Award at the Biennial PSCAC Art Prize 2019. The centre also holds exhibitions of potter and other arts alongside paintings and other arts and the centres feature potter in November is Helga Greiter, who will be followed by potter Riko Eguchi in December.

Jann BessantPUZZLE #3 31
NEXT is a way to showcase all of the exciting projects and initiatives, led by Council or the community, that have been happening in the Nelson Bay town centre. Since that time, weโve completed the Yacaaba Street extension, weโve developed a Public Domain Plan which prioritises people and community spaces and weโve completed important works to revitalise a key asset in our town centre โ Apex Park. This week, Iโm proud to be officially opening the revitalised Apex Park after many months of hard work. The park looks fantastic with fresh new pathways, stairs and lighting upgrades, in addition to the grassed amphitheatre completed in stage 1. I look forward to seeing our community use this space for relaxing, getting active and outdoor events โ including the Tomaree Arts Festival which also
kicks off this week. In the coming weeks, weโll also be getting to work demolishing an โeyesoreโ of Nelson Bay โ the Donald Street East car park. Two levels of the carpark have been closed for almost 5 years after an independent assessment found structural damage, so weโre more than ready to say goodbye. Best of all, the disused multi-storey car park will be replaced with level parking โ providing an additional 30 spaces to ease parking pressure in Nelson Bay. After years of inaction in the town centre, itโs fantastic to see progress on key actions from the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy. And weโll continue to drive progress with that simple little question โ โwhatโs next?โ

Portโs Bars hosting โLet it Pourโ campaign Qxpress: Gaynor Checked: Noel
More than 280 pubs and clubs across New South Wales are taking part in this weekendโs Great Northern Let It Pour campaign to raise funds and awareness for drought-stricken communities. Having raised more than $1 million last year, Great Northern Brewery Co (GNBC) is again donating 1000 kegs to venues across the country to bring city and country communities together with fundraising events that shine a light on the plight of droughtaffected areas. Great Northernโs Antonia Ciorciari said hundreds of venues across every state and territory across the country had registered to host Let It Pour events over this weekend (October 25 โ 27). In Nelson Bay, Mavericks On The Bay, Nelson Bay Bowling Club and Nelson Bay Golf Club will be hosting Let it Pour events. โGreat Northern was incredibly humbled by the passion and generosity of people
who responded to the Let it Pour call last year,โ Ms Ciorciari said. โNot only did the events unite country and city communities for a common cause, but they also showed rural people affected by drought that they were not alone. โThis year, pubs and clubs from Western Australia to Queensland and everywhere in between will be hosting live bands, sausage sizzles, bale tossing and other great activities to raise much-needed funds for our battling bushies โ itโs going to be a lot of fun and all in the name of a good cause.โ Outback adventurer and Great Northern Ambassador Matt Wright launched this yearโs Let it Pour campaign earlier this month with a heartfelt plea to Aussies to dig deep for their country cousins. Emotive images captured by outdoor photographer Krystle Wright will be posted on billboards around the country as part of this yearโs campaign to draw
attention to the plight of rural communities. Rotaryโs Philip Archer said all funds raised through Let it Pour will be donated to a drought relief fund organised by Rotary Australia and administered by Bendigo Bank. โLast year, funds were given to people who needed help with everything from feed and water for livestock to school supplies for children, repairs for their farm machinery and food for their dinner tables,โ he said. โThey were overwhelmed and incredibly touched by the generosity of Australians in both urban and regional centres and found great comfort in their show of support as they turned out in droves to events across the country. Ms Ciorciari said Great Northern was born in regional Australia and had a strong, loyal base of customers who lived in rural and regional parts of the country.
