Christmas Spirit By Marian SAMPSON
IT’S that time of the year and we are starting to see Christmas celebrations all around town. The Probus Club of Fingal Bay recently celebrated in style at Fingal Bay Sports Club.
Club members are always ready for fabulous food, fun and friendship, and members of Fingal Bay Probus Club enjoyed a very special lunch. Everything was safely in the hands of Edith and Rex Sneyd who organised the menu, decorations and treats
with the ever-willing help of the Fingal Bay Sports Club staff. Lively entertainment came from the Ukelestra band, Norman Martin’s photo presentation of our2019 activities – and pleasure from the fun puns that emerged like paper hats and dolphin

Academic Scholarships Big Picture Across Generations
PORT Stephens students starting TAFE or University in 2020 have the opportunity to receive a $2000 scholarship to help cover the cost of their studies. Now in its eleventh year, the Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships help local students on their way to further education. This year, 14 local businesses have collectively contributed $36,000 to the scholarship pool — a record equalling amount that will provide 18 scholarships. This year’s generous sponsors include Ampcontrol, Destination Port Stephens, Hunter Land, Hunter Readymixed Concrete, McDonald Jones Homes, Newcastle Airport, Port Stephens FM, Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, Salamander Bay Recycling, Soldiers Point Bowling
Club, SUEZ Resource Recovery Centre, Tomago Aluminium, Weathertex and Wests Group Australia. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the program is designed to support the ambitions of people in Port Stephens who are embarking on their academic journey. “For ten years, Port Stephens Council has been working with local businesses to help local students pursue their passion through further education. “In that time, we’ve helped over 110 students achieve their academic goals with scholarships totalling over $220,000 — an amazing effort that wouldn’t be possible without the support of local business sponsors. “I want to encourage any Port
Stephens resident thinking of starting University of TAFE next year to apply for a scholarship and give yourself a head start in your academic career,” he said. Mayor Palmer says he is immensely proud to have such an array of businesses supporting this important initiative. “This year, we have 18 scholarships totalling $36,000! Port Stephens’ businesses know the value of supporting our future leaders,” Mayor Palmer said. “The Mayoral Academic Scholarship supports our future workforce and helps local people achieve their goals. I want to thank all of our fantastic business sponsors who recognise the value of investing in this program,” he said.
q One of the residents from Harbourside Haven receiving her Santa gift with one of the Tomaree High School Students who hosted the event.
The Big Picture program allows students to submit a body of work as their HSC rather than sitting exams. The program allows the students to work in their chosen fields and can be a pathway to TAFE or university entry. Recently another group of students at the High School hosted a Christmas event with entertained residents from Harbourside Haven Stephen Jennings of Tomaree High School told News Of The Area, “Residents received morning tea as well as entertainment including bingo, Christmas Carols & special performances. “Of course, no Christmas event is complete without a visit by Santa Claus bearing gifts for each of the Harbourside Haven residents which was a wonderful end to a great day,” he said. The event was a school initiative in giving back to the community who provide so much support to the school. There is evidence that interaction between older people and youth gives both generations valuable experiences. This event at Tomaree High School was a demonstration of sharing joy, stories and care, certainly a positive activity for our community.

Unexpected New Feature For Anna Bay Makeover By Mitch LEES
IN an unexpected twist there has been a new feature added to the recent Anna Bay 7-day makeover with a car becoming stuck on a planter box metres from a busy bus stop last Wednesday afternoon. The elderely gentlemen driver of the car reportedly applied some “whisky throttle” as he mistook drive for reverse and jumped the
parking bumpers and curb onto the planter box. Dane Loomes, who witnessed the scene moments after the accident occurred, said that it was lucky no-one was using the footpath at the time of the incident. “The old bloke is pretty lucky it was super quiet and most people were having a day at the beach instead,” said Mr Loomes. “Everyone was pretty calm and seemed to be in good
spirits about it all, I mean you have to laugh or you’ll cry I suppose.” According to a Port Stephens and Hunter Police spokesperson the man was treated for shock by emergency services and given the all clear as his car was towed from the scene. No charges were laid and it’s unsure if any similar features will be added by visitors these holidays.

“Should I use a professional photographer for my rental property marketing?” WHETHER your property is an owner-occupier or investment, it is a valuable commodity. The rental market has become an exceptionally competitive property market segment and just like owner-occupier properties, first impressions count. A solid advertising and marketing strategy can make the difference between renting your property within a few days, or having it languish on the market for much longer; missing out on quality tenants. Every week a property sits empty costs the landlord. Unless the landlord is also a professional photographer, DIY photography usually results in a second-rate outcome thereby reducing the property’s overall appeal. I suggest it is false economy to save on a professional photographer. Properties with great advertising attract more people, more quickly, translating to more inspections and a quicker listing. A point to remember is that professional photographs are tax deductible so why not give yourself the very best chance to secure a quality tenant in the shortest time frame. R & R Property utilises the services of a professional photographer for all our properties: owner-occupier or rental. Our clients deserve the very best, and that’s what we deliver.
I hope this helps Denise

Ganggajang this NYE Summer Sundown Cinema Set For Port’s Shores By Mitch LEES
THE shores and suburbs of Port Stephens are set for a summer of entertainment in 2020 with Sundown Cinema looking to begin showing open-air screenings of some family inspired film classics. Sundown Cinema will be working with Port Stephens Council, local community groups and charities to deliver all-age events that will be sure to draw crowds from across the Peninsula and beyond. James Lord, Medowie
resident and owner of Sundown Cinema has recently moved the business from Launceston in Tasmania where it has been established for decades. “My family and I have recently relocated our business here in Port Stephens and will be working with Council and various groups on local Festivals and Charity events in the New Year,” said Mr Lord. “We really want to ensure a family friendly atmosphere where we can get people along, they can throw out a picnic blanket and pillows and relax for an evening
under the stars.” The outdoor cinema will also include services for hearing and visually impaired moviegoers so that everyone can enjoy the experience. Council are looking to utilise Fly Point Amphitheatre at Nelson Bay and Boyd Oval at Medowie as sites for the cinema in 2020. More information on upcoming events can be found at https:// www.facebook.com/ Sundowncinemansw/ and by checking Port Stephens Council events pages.

GANGGAJANG is playing this New Year’s Eve at Tea Gardens Hotel. Ganggajang released its self-titled debut album in 1985, with the singles, Gimme Some Lovin’, Giver of Life and House of Cards quickly climbing the charts to become part of the music revolution reinventing the Australian sound: a sound based on our stories; our places.
To The North, Ambulance Men and the perennial Sounds Of Then (This Is Australia) all echoed this new ethos, this new sense of place. Ganggajang is now regarded as one of the all-time classic Australian albums, while Sounds Of Then has reached near mythical status and continues to connect with new generations of Australian music fans to this day.

have even gone to the effort of choreographing lights to music. One of the early decorators, Andrew Morrissey, told News Of The Area, “We live in a busy spot at the entrance of the suburb so it’s nice to put on a display. We hope everyone enjoys it.” Local resident, Steve Withey, who is along Ryan Road Medowie, told News Of The Area, “It takes me around three weeks give or take to put everything up.”
“I am on a corner block so you get views as you drive along both frontages.” Nadia Soley, in Elm Street Medowie, said, “My neighbour and I have competitions every year to see who is better.” “When I first moved in I set my lights up in November, and a neighbour yelled out ‘It’s November not December.” “Next year his was up in November so I yelled the same back. Every year we both start in November now.” Eagle Close, Medowie
is always a highlight in the town, with this year being no exception. Along Ferodale Road, Medowie you can see a 15 foot “Christmas Tree” decorated with blue lights, just to be sure that Santa doesn’t miss the township. There is a special Facebook page set-up for Medowie Christmas Lights which even includes a map for those wanting to do a tour of the lights.

By Mitch LEES PORT Stephens is set to host the third Coal City Strongman competition on 25 January, 2020 (Australia Day) but some last minute logistical clashes has seen a council site on the Nelson Bay foreshore fall through at the last minute. The Hunter-based event is a precursor to the Australian titles where competitors have the chance to muscle up against the nations best whilst also looking to qualify for the Official World Strongman Games. Organisers Benny and Bec Chessum have recently returned from the Strongman Games in Daytona, USA where they learnt from the best too bring home some feats of amazing strength to entertain the good people of Port Stephens. Benny Chessum said that whilst the event has lost its original site there was still plenty of public and private interest to hold the

competition. “We were really wanting to put on a display of our sport to the community and all the visitors we have come here during the Australian Day festivities,” said Mr Chessum. “It’s a shame that our original site has fallen through but council have been really good about trying to help us out, especially Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan.” The event was scheduled to showcase a fire truck pull that Mr Chessum hoped would raise some much needed funds for the Rural Fire Service in their efforts to battle bushfires this summer season. “The event will go ahead no matter what, we just need room for the 20m truck pull so if anyone out there has a private or public space we can use, please get at me!” said Mr Chessum. Organisers are willing to run the event anywhere in Port Stephens and can be reached on 0416 185 655.
