Over the 12 month period, 926 penalties were issued for infringements of the new trial rule. Six of the eight crashes occurred in speed zones of 80km per hour or less.

AFL Season Wrap Up By Julie MCKIMM
PORT Stephens Power AFL Club recently held their Junior Presentation Day at the Great Aussie Bush Camp in Tea Gardens. The day was attended by over 60 families; this included members from Singleton who were part of the joint venture U17 team this season. Prior to the official presentations families enjoyed adventure activities around the camp. The Giant Swing and Flying Fox helped some players overcome their fears and take the plunge to participate. The official presentation started with the Auskickers receiving their playing medallions, then presentations took place for the U9โs, U11โs, U13โs and U17โs teams. President Mr Mark Edgar
said to News of the Area, โI would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and Team Managers for a wonderful season growing and guiding their teams this year.โ โGreat efforts were made by all of our parents and caregivers, who bring their kids to training and matches, cut up the oranges and wave the flags, a huge thank-you.โ โFinally, to our hard working committee who work tirelessly behind the scenes, without you, Game Day would not happen, so thanks for all your support this year.โ At their own presentation night, the womenโs team also celebrated their season. Ms Kayla Pennicott from the Senior Womenโs team was named the Best and Fairest for the season. Joint runner-up
Koala Conservation Program HENDERSON Park Lemon Tree Passage has become the focal point of a tree planting initiative to provide the resident koalas with extra foliage to browse on. Attached to each of the seedlings is a laminated information sheet to educate residents and visitors about the marsupials which are in rapid decline.
A high protective plastic collar has been placed around each tree and โcorridorsโ extend around the amenities block and skirt the car park. The project is being carried out by the local Parks and Reserves Group with Port Stephens Council. Koalas prefer swamp mahogany (eucalyptus robusta) as a food tree and can, at times be found in the park high up in the foliage.

PBL Stars Shine By Heather SHARP
THE surrounding community once again came out to support this weekโs PBL winners. An initiative of seven primary schools and two high schools, PBL or, Positive Behaviour for Learning, continues to encourage students to make good behavioural choices. This week, Mr Paul Baxter, Principal of Irrawang High School presented the awards to the students. Mr Baxter has been an educator for 23 years and has taught in a range of high schools, specialising in PDHPE
before becoming a Deputy Principal at Tomaree High School. Mr Baxter started as the Principal of Irrawang High School in 2016. Mr Baxter said, โI am a proud advocate of public education.โ โI feel privileged to have the unique opportunity as Principal of Irrawang High to work in partnership with students, families, and community to make a positive difference.โ Deon, Irrawang Public School: For his honesty in handing in lost property so it could be returned to the

$1.1 million upgrade to improve treacherous road PORT Stephens Council will soon begin work on a $1.1 million upgrade to improve safety on Lemon Tree Passage Road between Oyster Cove Road and Avenue of the Allies, Tanilba Bay. The upgrade is funded by the NSW Governmentโs Saving Lives on Country Roads Program and involves shoulder widening, superelevation to make the corner easier to navigate and installing a wire rope barrier to improve safety for drivers. Works are scheduled to begin from Tuesday 7 October and will take approximately 12 weeks, weather permitting.
Councilโs Capital Works Section Manager Phil Miles says this is a much-needed improvement for the Tilligerry Peninsula. โThis is a notorious stretch of road that has unfortunately been the site of 5 major crashes in as many years. This upgrade will ensure this corner is easier to navigate and safer for locals and visitors to the Tilligerry Peninsula,โ Mr Miles said. โThese works are the first of several improvements to Lemon Tree Passage Road that are scheduled for this financial year. Other scheduled works include improvements to the section near Rookes Road opposite the tennis courts and an upgrade to the roundabout on Nelson Bay Road on
behalf of Roads and Maritime Services,โ he said. Work will take place Monday to Friday from 6am to 6pm and Saturdays from 7am to 2pm. To ensure the safety of motorists and workers, one lane will be closed and a 40km/h speed limit will be imposed during work hours. โWe appreciate that Lemon Tree Passage Road is an important thoroughfare for locals and visitors, so we will be doing all we can to work closely with the residents to manage the inconvenience. โIโd ask people to be patient with the work crews, follow the directions of traffic control and allow extra travel time so they can get where they need to be,โ he said.

Cooper Donnelly, Salt Ash Public School: For demonstrating resilience and sportsmanship at the Regional Spelling Bee as he made a concerted effort to go and congratulate and shake the winnerโs hand at the conclusion of the competition. Sienna Winter, Seaham Public School: Sienna is an outstanding citizen at Seaham Public School. Sienna organises playground games for the younger students and ensures that she includes
students who might be a little sad or lonely. James Ramsay, Hunter River High School: James has been nominated for showing resilience, diligence, and determination in his studies and his future employment opportunities. Lillianah Skaines, Medowie Public School: For creating a video showing how to care for our school environment by putting rubbish in the bin. Lillianah is also a great role model and always picks up rubbish to look after the environment.
Blake Smith, Karuah Public School: A parent nominate Blake for this behaviour at the Karuah Skate Park. Blake was observed helping and encouraging a young boy to ride his bike. Well done Blake, you are a great role model. Adiah Mtao, Raymond Terrace Public School: Adiah displayed the PBL values of acting responsibly and respect when representing the school at the Hunter Dance Festival in Newcastle.

Hearing Check a Priority
Port Stephens residents urged to have their hearing checked PORT Stephens residents are being urged to get their hearing tested and prioritise hearing health after 81 percent of people said hearing loss could affect relationships with friends and family. Thatโs according to a recent study which also revealed only four in 10 residents have had a hearing test in the last two years. This is despite 78 percent of respondents recognising that hearing loss has a significant impact on the lives of those with the condition, including feelings of isolation, loss of confidence and stress. The findings have spurred Port Stephens Council, Kate Washington MP, health experts and local community groups - such as Lions Clubs, Probus Clubs and Menโs Sheds to join forces for a public health awareness campaign. Called โImplant Yourself
Back Into Lifeโ, the campaign aims to make Port Stephens a world leader in helping older adults benefit from better hearing, which may help keep the mind sharp and may help people have stronger social interactions. Health experts and community leaders have thrown their weight behind the campaign by Cochlear and the SCIC Cochlear Implant Program a Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) service to help reduce the impact of hearing loss; a condition affecting half of all adults in Port Stephens. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said support for this public health awareness campaign aligned with the councilโs Ageing Strategy that aims to improve life for older people living in the local area. The council has already hosted a series of information sessions
q Jeoff Harry and his wife Lexie Harry from Salamander Bay.
about hearing loss and will be distributing resources to help inform residents about addressing hearing loss. โWeโre proud many older Australians choose to live in Port Stephens and itโs our responsibility to continue to improve the livability of the
local area and support the health of local residents,โ he said. โBeing able to hear and communicate with friends and family is very important. I urge people to look after their hearing and seek advice if they have any concerns,โ said Mayor
Ryan Palmer. Kate Washington MP, who was the first local member to get behind the campaign, recently attended a special event at the Hawks Nest Bridge Club with Associate Professor Kelvin Kong to highlight the importance of hearing health. She said, โThis research highlights why we should not be complacent with our hearing health. Being part of the conversation is crucial for community and family life and good hearing gives us the confidence to connect with people.โ โTaking a hearing test could be the first step towards improving your quality of life,โ said Kate Washington MP. Health experts want to reach out to the 56 per cent of residents in Port Stephens who believe hearing loss is unavoidable as we get older. Associate Professor Kelvin Kong, Consultant Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon and Worimi man, said more people were expected to develop hearing loss as the population ages, but it wasnโt an inevitable part
of ageing. โMany older people ignore their hearing loss or simply resign themselves to slowly going deaf, but this doesnโt have to be the case,โ he said. โThe ability to hear properly connects us to our friends and family, keeping us switched on. If you notice any deterioration in you or your loved onesโ hearing, speak to a health professional about treatment options,โ said Associate Professor Kelvin Kong. In response to local hearing loss figures, Port Stephens residents will become the worldโs first to benefit from a new online check to show if their hearing aids are enough. The Hearing Aid Check (available at www. hearingaidcheck.com/ au) is simple, free and can be completed on a home computer, tablet or mobile phone. Each user receives personalised results and recommendations, including if they should speak to a health professional about their hearing.

Lions Go International
By Heather SHARP
MEMBERS of the Lions Club Raymond Terrace have returned from an exciting International forum in Jakarta, Indonesia. Known as the ANZI Pacific Forum, it ran from 5 to 8 September and over 600 delegates from 15 countries attended. Also in attendance was the Lionsโ International President from South Korea and the immediate past President from Iceland. Nine delegates from various Hunter Clubs attended.
Mr Peter Francis from the Raymond Terrace Lions Club told News Of The Area, โIt was a fabulous opportunity to engage with other Lions from around the world and engage in some real grassroots diplomacy.โ Topics covered at the forum included volunteer spirit with the Lions Club, cultural diversity in International relations, official Lions roles, understanding body language, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution. โOne of the Raymond Terrace contingent members who attended came along as
a visitor to see what Lions is all about and is now becoming a member of the Club,โ Mr Francis said. The forum also concentrated on all aspects of leadership and leadership training which Lions members see leads to greater understanding and cooperation between people from around the world. Mr Francis said, โWith well-trained culturally and linguistically aware leaders comes peace and understanding amongst the 200 nations that have active Lions Clubs.โ

โWhat do I legally require for a real estate agent to list my property for sale?โ
IN NSW, prior to placing your property on the market with a real estate agent you are required to have a contract of sale of land Note to Editor: in place. No marketing of the property can Created in QUARK commence until this document is held and XPRESS 3.3. your real estate agent can not legally market notasneeded or discuss yourItems property being forfor sale until publication be will be it is held. A conveyancer or can solicitor as each in a able to create erased this document forisyou. This doesseparate not applytext for box. a rural property, but because your potential purchasers will always ask for a copy, so that they can read through it, I always suggest that one is created immediately upon commencement of listing. A contract of sale of land has all the legal information surrounding the sale plus ownership, maps, easements, covenants, zoning information, sewerage and drainage diagram etc etc. A real estate agent requires an agency agreement to be signed, providing them with the legal permission and instructions to list your property for sale. It is also a legal requirement for all parties to the sale to be identified by both the solicitor/ conveyancer and also the real estate agent, Created: A & B Foley using the 100 point checklist, prior to listing.

THERE are more than 4700 small businesses in Port Stephens and this October, weโre taking time to celebrate the important role they play in our local economy. Small businesses are all around us โ from the local store or cafรฉ, to the self-employed entrepreneur. We all rely on their goods and services each and every day across a range of industries. Thatโs why Port Stephens Council is committed to making business growth easier for this valuable sector of our economy through a range of programs and initiatives โincluding Small Business Month. This year, weโve put together an extensive program of quality events and workshops to help grow and strengthen local business. We have workshops on setting up your business, free advice with the Business Connect Bus and internationally renowned speaker Michael McQueen on how to bullet-proof your business in turbulent times. Thereโs also informative presentations on business opportunities by the NSW Government, Destination NSW, Hunter Futurepreneurs and Ai Group. Small Business Month is all about celebrating the critical role small business plays in our economy. Itโs also a great opportunity for owners and operators to gain support, be inspired and connect with one another. We know it can be difficult to find time to invest in growing a business, which is why weโre making it easy. I encourage all business owners โ or anyone thinking of starting a business โ to get along to as many events as you can! To view the full program of events, head to portstephens.nsw.gov.au

Gymnasts among best in NSW By Marian SAMPSON
GYMNASTS from Shoal Bay, St Michaelโs, Tomaree, Soldiers Point, St Phillips and Salt Ash public schools were among local gymnasts from TPT Gymnastics Club that competed at the recent Hunter Region Gymnastics Championships. While most families think of the traditional soccer, cricket, swimming and netball as the sport options available there are plenty of options that build a range of athletic skills and challenge the mind and body. Gymnastics is a sport which requires dedication and skill. Gymnastics competitions are broken into levels of difficulty with level 1 being the easiest. CONTINUED Page 13
