TOURISM is one of the Port’s major employers and at present the industry is taking a critical hit. Leah Anderson President of the Tomaree Business Chamber told News Of The Area, “As Chamber President I have been in contact with the Hunter Business Chamber where I have discussed the impacts that both the bushfires and Coronavirus have had on Tourism. “The flow on effect for local businesses, for example local shops, restaurants and attractions who rely heavily on our tourism trade for their business. areas to discuss the effects and to workshop ideas to support local business.” It falls to all of us across Australia to support business and in particular local business. “Shop Local has never been more important than now. “I encourage all residents to think about our small businesses right across Port Stephens during this time, and if they can buy a product from a local store, or go for lunch or dinner at a local restaurant or cafe, take the family and do a local activity from our tourism operators, this will all go a long way towards supporting our local businesses,” she said. MOTORISTS will soon benefit from safety measures rolling out across the Hunter region with more than $11,819,239 to be invested into 11 projects, through round three of the Safer Roads Program. Of these 11 projects 5 are within the Port Stephens region. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack said safety barriers, rumble strips and wide centrelines were some of the measures that would help keep motorists safe. “We know living in regional NSW often means a lot more time spent on our roads – and this program is about making those roads as safe as possible,” Ms Cusack said. “Every life matters, and that’s why we’re investing in life-saving measures across our road network to see that every motorist who sets off on a journey makes it home to their

Existing projects receiving additional funding during the next financial year include: • $1.22 million toward Newline Road, Port Stephens, to install road shoulders, rumble

strips, and curve alignment markers through Saving Lives on Country Roads • $730,000 toward Pacific Highway and Bucketts Way intersection, Port Stephens, to install raised islands and upgrade the intersection to improve sight lines under Saving Lives on Country Roads Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said this latest round of funding would see 207 new projects commence, bringing the total to $258 million for work on 383 projects next financial year. “These are projects designed to save lives. We are committed to reducing the state’s road toll and the measures we are investing in through this program will prevent the loss of more than 1500 lives and serious injuries on our roads over 15 years,” Mr Toole said.

Cash for Koalas

By Marian SAMPSON

WE have all been horrified by the carnage suffered by native animals through the drought and bushfires. Some of us have looked for alternative ways to help without raiding the grocery budget. Right now you can help Port Stephens Koalas by recycling your empty bottles and cans at your local Return and Earn recycling stations located at Salamander Bay, Fingal Bay Sports Club, Raymond Terrace and Muree Golf Club. Donating all or part of your refund will go towards funding the rescue and care of injured and sick koalas. What’s more you will feel like you have done your bit to help our local wildlife.

q Mayor Ryan Palmer, John de Ridder of COPSY with, Meryl Miller, Judy Jones, , Jeanette Robertson, Marianne Newton, some of the artists that contributed to the work.

PORT’s community is one that is known to care and to make change for the better. Recently 3 community groups came together to achieve just that. The jupiter Consulting Rooms located within the Tomaree Library complex in Salamander Bay required soundproofing due to the noise interference being located alongside 100.9 Port Stephens FM Radio and Salamander Child Care Centre. The COPSY Board applied to Port Stephens Council to have their rooms soundproofed. Patrick Connaughton, of Connaughton Building, donated his expertise, time and

materials to COPSY to enable the soundproofing. Meanwhile artists at Port Stephens Community Arts Centre were approached to paint a mural at the childcare centre adjacent to the consulting rooms. Teaming together Meryl Miller, Marianne Newton and Judy Jones developed a brief for the collaborative project that ties into the Mambo Wetlands, and further encourages pupils at the centre to embrace nature, as well as all the wildlife that are their neighbours. Artists from the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre were requested to donate a painting reflecting Australian wildlife, insects, plants, rocks, flowers etc. from any paintings they had in their

Cafe and Beach on the Edge

q A group of locals came together to find out more about the erosion impacting the region. Photo by Rod Larkin. By Marian SAMPSON STOCKTON is reeling after storms, massive seas and high tides have continued to erode the beach. The iconic Lexies Café is closed until further notice, the City of Newcastle was forced to maintain the closure of the building at Stockton Beach currently leased to Lexie’s Café following advice from coastal engineers. The independent report following further severe erosion

in recent weeks states that the building is within a hazardous zone of wave impact and is at immediate risk of significant damage or failure in a one-intwo-year storm event. City of Newcastle Infrastructure and Property Director Ken Liddell said the decision was made because of the unacceptable risk posed to public safety. “According to the coastal engineers’ advice, the erosion impact on the building has created an imminent risk to

Thursday, 27 February, 2020

public safety and, as a result, the building cannot be occupied,” Liddell said. “We understand the direct impact this will have for the operators of the Café, staff and its patrons as Lexie’s is a muchloved and valuable part of the community. We will be working closely with the business owner to transition out of the premises to make this difficult process as smooth as possible. “The erosion of Stockton Beach has been recognised as a natural disaster and the City must keep public safety a priority as the ongoing issues are managed and we work with the NSW Government on sustainable long-term solutions.” Due to the same severe erosion event, City of Newcastle relocated all ocean-edge cabins to the adjacent reserve behind Stockton Swimming Pool to save the assets from falling into the ocean. No available space is

available for all the relocated cabins within the existing holiday park as this space is designated for tents and caravans, and the park continues to take bookings. Underground works to the area east of Stockton Swimming Pool have been undertaken to minimise future costs associated with the security of the cabins, should a development application for the permanent relocation of the cabins in this area be approved.

“High winds occur in the area during east coast low storm events, which typically happen in the March-April period that is rapidly approaching,” Liddell said. “The City of Newcastle is undertaking these measures to ensure public safety as well as to help protect what is a key part of Stockton’s tourism economy.

stock of past works. Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “Twenty five artists donated their paintings which resulted in a Mural that contains over 100 objects.” Community collaboration and mutual support is one of the best qualities of living within Port Stephens. THis one changes a blank brick wall into an interesting and unique artwork. The Artists felt privileged to be able to provide their works for inspiring our younger generation’s love of art and nature, while their work also serves as providing privacy for youth receiving early intervention on how to embrace their mental wellbeing. A Card with a picture of the Mural is available for sale at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre.

“The longer this important holiday accommodation is unable to be booked by visitors, the more tourism dollars Stockton is missing out on causing further harm to Stockton’s economy and community.” Stockton residents have come together to seek urgent redress to the situation.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.

Dear Jasminda,

Even though my daughter has moved to Sydney and is in a new relationship, her former boyfriend, a uni student, still comes around for dinner at least two nights a week. I haven’t told her because it seems sort of odd, but I don’t know how to say anything to him without hurting his feelings.

WHAT ARE ‘HONEST MATERIALS’? “I’m seeing the term ‘honest materials’ a lot in property descriptions. It seems to mean many things. Can you clarify this for me?” YES, ‘honest materials’ is a description gaining prominence. We see a lot of homogenization and engineering in today’s properties. By homogenization I mean homes that all look the same – cookie cutter – if you like. And with engineered, I don’t mean structural compliance, I mean pre-fab floorboards, vinyl, carpet, laminate. So, when you see the term ‘honest materials’ you’re being directed to materials that are truly natural such as timber dado feature paneling; timber-lined walls and ceilings or large beams.. Instead of covering them over, the owners have elected to retain them, expose them and celebrate them. This also goes for brick, concrete or even rammed earth internal walls or fireplaces. If they’re painted or plastered, owners have removed the covering, exposing their natural state, sealing where necessary and enjoyed the natural state of the building materials. Honest materials are also found in the floorboards and other timber and iron products found in restorers yards. Whatever the product, it is inclined to have more character than the ‘shiny and new’ look we often see today. If you see it, you know you’re looking at history, warmth and character.

I hope this helps Denise

Sustainable Schools Grants program

TWO Raymond Terrace schools have been awarded Grants as part of the NSW Government’s inaugural $2.5 million Sustainable Schools Grants program. Grahamstown Public School received $15,000 for their project which will involve transformation of an area of the school grounds into a more structured and relevant space. The students currently use the natural environment for imaginative and creative play. Grahamstown Public wants to foster and enhance this process through the introduction of sensory equipment, such as musical instruments, texture paths, and seating made of natural materials. They also aim to build learning experiences for the students by installing a weather station, creating native animal habitats including possum and

bird boxes, and a frog pond, and developing more native flora endemic to the area. Raymond Terrace Public School received $7050 for their aquaponics gardens. They currently have two aquaponics systems within a school garden that require additional funding to maintain its functionality. Students have shown great interest in this area, and it has allowed teachers to promote student leadership through a hands-on approach. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack said, “I am thrilled that these local schools in Port Stephens have been successful with their grant applications.” “The Sustainable Schools Grants will empower students and school communities to implement projects that will

benefit the environment by helping to save energy or water, reduce waste, or improve biodiversity.” The students have learned about the aquaponics gardening process, and have researched the growing importance of alternative methods of growing and harvesting crops, and ecofriendly advantages of aquaculture including land and water conservation. The Sustainable Schools Grants program, which provides a total of $10 million over four years, is open to all NSW public schools and preschools with the next application round open in November.

Mrs KC, Soldiers Point. Dear Mrs KC, I feel that this boyfriend – I’m going to call him Jasper – I feel Jasper can smell your kindness in the same way that he can smell your veal parmigiana with scalloped potatoes, julienned carrots, crisp beans and a baked cheesecake topped with drizzled lemon curd and berries for dessert. Uni students don’t have a lot of spare cash, and I reckon Jasper has factored you in to his weekly budget that goes something like this: Three nights a week as a Pizza Deliverer plus my student loan plus the money I got for Christmas plus two nights a week at Mrs KC’s house for dinner minus share accommodation costs, petrol, uni books, parking fees, drinking money and six packets of two-minute noodles equals an accruing debt that I may be able to pay off by the time I’m 28. Without Mrs KC, I’ll be at least 30. Of course, I don’t doubt that you also have a very engaging personality, Mrs KC, and look, if you enjoy Jasper’s company and it isn’t inconvenient to cook for one more (particularly now your daughter has flown the coop), then I don’t see a problem with it. I would, however, tell her about this arrangement before she drops in for a surprise visit and sees his clapped out 1999 Mitsubishi Magna in the driveway. PS: If Jasper starts to bring his washing as well, all deals are off. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

STUDENTS from Irrawang High School had a special opportunity last week helping Sydney artist, Mulga create a new mural in their art block. The contact began last year when students asked for his assistance with a research project. To ensure the mural went ahead, students conducted a fundraising campaign holding their 2019 mid-year art exhibition with student artworks for sale and chocolate fundraising. Art Teacher, Kassandra Bangle, told News Of The Area, “The subject matter was an easy request for us, having seen Mulga’s koalas in his instagram feed we knew the resemblance between his koalas and PBL Pete (our school’s Positive Behaviour for Learning mascot) was too strong to overlook.” “The dolphin was our way of acknowledging the strong history of Worimi culture in our area (the dolphin being a totem for the area).” Seven Year 8 helpers were selected from students who had shown a strong level of engagement with our Mulga inspired portraiture unit last year and also sustained work ethic to learning in the Visual Arts. One Year 7 student was selected based on his overwhelming start to learning in Visual Arts this year. Year 8 student, Toby Ruhl, spoke to News Of The Area

and said, “It was inspiring to work with him (mulga) and an amazing opportunity.” “I learnt how important layering is to finish artwork.” He added, “Mulga really let us do most of it ourselves, he was friendly and explained what we were meant to do.” Throughout the mural day, students were lucky to work closely with Mulga, gain some inspiration to consider creative pathways from their experience with such a humble and accomplished Australian artist. The mural will allow students to be able to investigate and analyse a large scale work of art in close proximity and understand Mulga’s artmaking practice.

What does the Future look like? PORT Stephens is and always has been my home — it’s an amazing place to live and raise a family. But what will our place look like in the future? As our jobs, town centres and economies continue to evolve and change, what kind of legacy will we be leaving for our kids? That’s the question Council is posing as we draft a plan for housing and land use in Port Stephens. The Local Strategic Planning Statement sets out our 20 year vision for land use and how change will be managed into the future. The Local Housing Strategy, Live Port Stephens, helps us plan for housing demand to ensure we have a range of home options for different lifestyles and budgets. We want to hear from you about how we can improve the wellbeing of our communities into the future. Simply head to haveyoursay.portstephens.nsw.gov.au to take the survey or make your submission by 20 March 2020. With more than 100 major projects on the go across Port Stephens, we’re also busy building the future of our region right now. We’re back to work at Anna Bay’s Robinson Reserve to continue its welldeserved makeover. With a new playspace, outdoor fitness equipment, new skate park, new picnic areas, new toilets — it’s all happening! Works have also begun to construct a level car park at Donald Street East, bringing 103 spaces and 4 dedicated mobility parking permit spaces to the Bay. We’re well ahead of schedule with the brand new Medowie Sport and Community Club. While work is almost complete, we’re in talks with operators to get this fantastic new venue up and operating as soon as possible — stay tuned! By Ryan Palmer Mayor of Port Stephens
