Kate Washington’s three priority areas for Port Stephens include, schools, hospitals and the cost of living. In an interview, Ms Washington explained her commitments to the Port Stephens electorate. Ms Washington has often focused on being a community-minded Member of Parliament, and she told News Of The Area her motivation to run as a candidate is because, “I fought hard to be in this role in 2015 because I thought our community deserved better.”
“We deserved a representative who cared and who was in the job for the right reasons.” “I’m motivated now to not only be returned as the Member for Port Stephens, but to see Labor form government.” Responding to criticism that the long-awaited high school in Medowie has not been built, Ms Washington said, “One of the enduring, decades-long issues for CONTINUED Page 2

State Election Looming What You Need To Know About Casting Your Vote In The NSW State Election On 23 March 2019
By Heather SHARP
VOTERS across New South Wales will be casting their vote on Saturday, 23 March 2019 to decide who will represent them for the next four years. The traditional so-called democracy sausage will be on offer at many polling booths, a fundraising opportunities for many P&Cs and other local groups. In addition to making the decision about whether or not to add onion, voters will need to make a more serious choice at the ballot box. News Of The Area has contacted known candidates and political parties to provide our readers with a profile of each person standing for election. We want to provide our readers with an understanding of what each candidate
stands for, away from the political spin and a snapshot of who they are, personally. The election, to be held on 23 March is largely touted in regional areas as being a contest between a Liberal Party government led by current Premier, Ms Gladys Berejiklian focused on Sydney infrastructure; against a potential ALP government concerned with local issues and led by little know and new leader, Mr Michael Daly who gained leadership in November 2018 after sordid details of his predecessor, Mr Luke Foley, were broadcast. Amongst the mix of ALP and Liberal candidates across the state are independent and minor Party candidates who are seeking to register a protest vote against the two major parties, to stand as a viable alternative on local issues, or to increase their Party’s share of the primary vote.
The preferential voting system has known to cause confusion for some voters, because unlike the First Past The Post also known as The Winner Takes All system, voters’ preferences are taken into consideration until a candidate has secured 50% + 1 of the votes. Australia is one of the only jurisdictions to have preferential voting and it has been known to confuse some voters. This voting system means that each voter ranks each candidate according to the voter’s own personal preference. While many candidates hand out how to vote cards with preferences listed, this has no bearing on how the votes are counted, as only the preferences given by each individual voter are counted. For example, if there are four candidates, a voter lists who they most want by writing

the numeral 1 in the box next to their name, then 2 for the second preference down to the last number and the last preference. When votes are counted if there is no outright winner, which means 50% + 1 of the votes, the candidate with the least number of votes is eliminated. All the votes that went to the eliminated candidate are then distributed to the other candidates, according to who is listed as number 2 on the voting forms. This continues until there is an outright winner. This ensures that everyone’s vote is counted it also serves to keep the two-Party system entrenched.

Meet the Candidate: Jaimie Abbott
By Heather SHARP
PORT Stephens Councillor, Ms Jaimie Abbott is looking to add Member for Port Stephens to her political accomplishments in the upcoming March State election. News Of The Area interviewed Ms Abbott to gain an insight into her plans for the electorate if elected. She said of the three main areas of concern for Port Stephens voters, were better roads, improved health services, and increasing local job opportunities. Ms Abbott told News Of The Area, “For the past two months I have been knocking on doors across Port Stephens almost every day, listening to people’s concerns and issues.” “After numerous conversations about things that people believe are important and what they want to see government deliver, it becomes absolutely clear that managing our state’s budget is at the foundation of being able to deliver and improve every service that people
enjoy or want.” “In 2017 I ran for the local council, because I believed that I could be a strong voice for our community that could represent its views and help to improve local infrastructure.” Recounting some of her achievements, Ms Abbott said, “Whether it is the new playground in Nelson Bay for children with a disability, the new Koala Hospital or the Birubi Transport Interchange, I have been driven to deliver for the community.” “Having had my first child last November I am even more focused on our community’s future that we will all share – the challenges and opportunities – such as local infrastructure investment and better health and education facilities.” A long standing issue for Medowie residents has been the absence of a local, public high school despite the land for one being owned by the Department of Education for decades. Of this issue, Ms Abbott told News Of The Area, “I
have been speaking with the community around Medowie about the high school.” “If I am elected, I will be asking the Education Minister for a full briefing with the Department so that I can ensure that our local students’ needs are being met now and into the future.” “Having looked into this on their behalf, I understand that the NSW Department of Education has considered the viability of a local high school and raised concerns
a massive impact on their education.” Taking on the issue of public transport, Mr Doran told News Of The Area, “There are not enough options, they are too limited.” “Public transport is a government service, it doesn’t have to, but people have decided they should make money, but it doesn’t need to be the case, it could be reasonably subsidised.” “Private transport companies are government subsidised; they could stay in private hands, but there should be more services.” “In England they brought out a system where they allowed smaller companies--minibuses—to enter the market which would be worth investigating here in NSW.” “Money has to be spent on infrastructure projects, people don’t want to live in a place with bad transport options.” Involving residents in the decision making process is important to Mr Doran, who said, “I will have an open door policy.” Mr Doran plans to have a rotational office in major locations, so that as he told News Of The Area, “People didn’t have to travel far to see me and visit.” “For example at Raymond Terrace, Williamtown, Karuah, and Anna Bay locations, to get people to realise they are part of us.” “I have the ability to travel but some, due to bad
public transport access or unemployment, can’t get to their elected representative.” Now employed at TAFE, Mr Doran said, “I understand the situation some people are in, my partner and I have been at once time long termed unemployed.” “We know what it’s like and to have to rely on support and it is so difficult to find work.” So many companies take advantage of people, they get you on a trial basis and then don’t get employment out of it.” Mr Doran and his partner, Heidi, enjoy many of the places around Port Stephens, telling News Of The Area, “There are so many stunning spots and we often go to breakfast at Lemon Tree Passage.” “Also, the sun coming up at Tea Gardens is beautiful.” “At Tanilba Bay and Mallabula is lovely at the water and we have found the Italian restaurant at Medowie to be nice.” “The trouble is with this place is there is not enough hours in the day to do everything!” Although a novice in state politics, Mr Doran has a strong background of being involved in grassroots organisations, telling New Of The Area, “I like helping people and I have volunteered and was in Rotary (Queanbeyan West) for over a decade including time as a President.” Mr Doran is on the public record for being against

that an additional high school in Medowie would have a negative impact on Irrawang High School.” Conversation and consultation is a priority for Ms Abbott, telling News Of The Area, “I believe there are many ways to get local residents involved in decisionmaking, such as social media, street stalls and community meetings.” “I find that even just knocking on someone’s door to give them an opportunity
to share their thoughts and opinions is a great way to learn about the passion that people have to see their streets and neighbourhoods improve.” Ms Abbott, with her partner Matt and their baby boy, Harvey, enjoy “Spending time on the Tilligerry peninsula.” “One of our family’s favourite weekend activities is to take the picnic rug down to the waterfront with the dogs and watch the sunset.”
“I am also a keen scuba diver and love getting out for a dive around Fly Point and Halifax.”Ms Abbott has had a varied career prior to being elected as a local government councillor, telling News Of The Area, “Before my political life, I had been a radio and TV journalist.” Ms Abbott is also a Squadron Leader in the RAAF Reserves and has been deployed. “I also run my own small business which offers public speaking training, giving the opportunity to help others boost their confidence.” “I am passionate about animal welfare, and I was the President of Hunter Animal Rescue for 7 years.” Ms Abbott has told News Of The Area that if elected as Member for Port Stephens, she will continue in her role as Councillor saying, “If elected, I will commit myself entirely to serving the needs of the Port Stephens community in both of my roles.” “Rather than being incompatible, I believe this scenario presents a unique opportunity for me to work across both levels of government in support of outcomes that benefit local residents.”
By Heather SHARP
STANDING for the first time in a political contest is independent, Mr Bill Doran. News Of The Area caught up with Mr Doran to discuss his ideas for the electorate, plans if elected, and what he believes is important for the area. Mr Doran asserts the three main areas of concern for Port Stephens voters is local government transparency, the PFAS contamination issue at Williamtown, and the unemployment rate. Mr Doran says there needs to be a holistic approach taken to the PFAS issue, saying “The State government needs to investigate who they need to take legal action against and need to start now.” “They can take action against Defence through workplace health and safety or environmental.” “We can actually save our environment.” Speaking about the Medowie high school issue, Mr Doran confirmed his commitment to the public education facility, telling News Of The Area, “If Labor comes in, I will support it wholeheartedly.” “There are over 10 000 residents in Medowie and it’s not getting any smaller.” “It has two feeder public schools and one independent school.” “If school kids have to travel so far it stops them doing their homework, relaxing, and doing other after school activities and this has

‘Next Chapter in Our Story’ Pelican Pest Control joined forces with Rentokil Initial
JOINING forces with a company as passionate about local business success is what took Shayne and his Pelican Family into the next chapter of their storybook. The partnership of Pelican Pest Control and Rentokil Initial was welcomed to secure the future of his business. No, Shayne has not retired. He has stepped back from climbing into roof voids after being a Pest Technician for over 25 years. He has embraced more of a technical teaching role within Rentokil Initial to share his knowledge around termites and the critters of concern to the local community. Those who worked with Shayne have joined the Rentokil Initial family too.

Shayne and his team are excited about this change and can be contacted at any time for your pest control needs.
Shayne was excited that Rentokil Initial is a Registered Training Organisation and offers more technical skills and training opportunities. Rentokil Initial are also a member of the Australian Environmental Pest Managers Association. They have a team of Field Biologists and Training Managers who ensure that their staff are kept up-to-speed with the latest innovations and technology.

Strong Women Lift Each Other
ON Saturday 2 March, Imugi Martial Arts and Elemental Adventures are teaming up to raise funds and awareness for the Yacaaba Centre Information & Counselling Service Port Stephens Inc in their fight against domestic violence. The Martial Arts Club will host a Women’s Self Defence Workshop fundraiser at the Union Hall in Williamtown. All proceeds will go to the Yacaaba Centre via the 10 Challenges in 10 Months to raise $10,000 currently being undertaken by Monique Bortoli for Elemental Adventures. The aim of the Women’s Self Defence Workshop is to empower women, providing them with a fundamental understanding of self defence and confidence to believe
they never have to live a submissive life. Imugi Martial Arts Co-founder, Kelly O’Brien is passionate about helping others in need, and bringing people together for humanity. Ms O’Brien told News Of The Area, “I believe in the power of good people, I believe in the strong lifting those in need and I believe in sharing knowledge to help others grow not to suppress.” “The rate of domestic violence in Port Stephens is alarming and not just in the areas you might first think.” When we think of domestic violence, most only consider physical abuse. However it occurs in many forms including,

controlling behaviour, sexual, emotional and economic abuse, intimidation and isolation Ms O’Brien said, “Sadly many women I know have stories to tell of abusive relationships, the money we raise will directly help women with stories just like these.” “This workshop aims to bring awareness to the choices and strength every woman has and provide some basic knowledge around personal protection.” Enrolment in the workshop is strictly for women 16 years and over. There are no training prerequisites, and no fitness level requirements. If you would like more details contact Kelly O’Brien on 0401063419.

Mrs KJ, Hawks Nest Dear Mrs KJ,
Dear Denise,
What extra items usually stay when you sell a farm? GB Bulahdelah
WITH each property, seller & buyer, the terms and conditions will vary. Just like in a residential sale normal fixtures remain, ie dishwasher, air conditioners etc but with a rural transaction a buyer may ask for extra items to stay. They will need these items to maintain the property & they may not have the knowledge just yet to go out & purchase the equipment themselves. Examples can be tractors, portable round yards, large ride-on lawn mowers etc. Depending on the age of the desired items, it is usually more economical for the seller’s agent to negotiate a better price on the property, with the condition that the desired item/s remain. The buyers are happy with this outcome & the seller will save on transportation costs to the new property, as well as time & effort in moving them. Don’t allow the prospect of not having an old tractor anymore cause the loss of a sale. How nice will it be to receive the extra cash and buy yourself a nice new tractor or ride on lawn mower for the next property. Hope this helps, Denise
Perspective on ‘Electricity for Thought’ Response on Opinion piece ‘Electricity for Thought’
Dear News of the Area,
THE letter published on 21 February under the heading ‘Electricity for Thought’ raised concerns about the potential impact on the grid from the widespread introduction of electric cars. As an owner for the last three years of two proprietary fully electric cars, may I add these comments. The first one had a 24 kw capacity battery and was driven locally and numerous times to Sydney-Canberra and once to Tasmania. Our current model has a 33 kw battery used similarly, with Brisbane replacing Tasmania as the furthest destination. Its supplied plug in cord draws 6.5 amps (cf portable air conditioner @ 7 to 9 amps). Therefore grid consumption calculations based on 80 kw was an overestimate even acknowledging some singular high end cars such as Teslas carry batteries of this order.
Overseas countries that already have a high electric vehicle usage experience negligible impact on their grids and continue to encourage their further adoption. This is to ameliorate ‘climate change’ and recognises the substantial health benefit of removing emissions from motor vehicle traffic. Deaths in Australia from this source totals 1700 annually, compared to the road accident toll of 1200. Furthermore V2G (vehicle to grid) technology is advancing rapidly in several countries. This allows battery vehicles to pass their unused energy back into the grid. Software within the car manages this outflow to ensure there is sufficient vehicle battery for your next days needs. Electricity authorities are embracing the use of V2G as a practical means of balancing grids. W Lamond Salamander Bay

That time of the week again
I definitely see the point you are making, though there is much evidence to suggest that the link between violence and video games is tentative and unpersuasive. There are probably a lot of other factors to consider including who he is playing the games with, what other social activities he is involved in, and whether his vacant stare is due to too much screen time or demonic possession. Let’s not become unnecessarily hysterical, Mrs KJ. There are so many things to have moral panics about these days. The government is having a major meltdown over music festivals at the moment, but I’ve been to a few festivals over the years and the closest I’ve come to death is getting my finger caught in someone’s macramé top due to overzealous swaying. Violent content can actually be lifesaving. In my most recent Netflix binge watching the true-crime series Dirty John, a teenage girl saved herself from a knife-wielding psychopath by imagining she was in a zombie apocalypse. This seemed incredibly far-fetched until I did some research and discovered that is, in fact, what she did. So, should we be invaded by zombies (and the presidential madness in America would suggest it’s already happened), your son will definitely not be one of the first to go. He may even save his dear old mum (unless she keeps nagging him). Food for thought. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

NSW Women’s Super W team
Maya Stewart, Nelson Bay, NSW Women’s Super W team
NEWCASTLE and Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) has congratulated two local women rugby players who were today announced in the NSW Women’s Super W team to play ACT Brumbies on Saturday (23 Feb). NHRU President, Bill Clifton, said it was great news for the two players and also for the local women’s rugby competition. NSW Women’s Rugby announced that 18-yearold Nelson Bay girl, Maya Stewart, would make her
debut on the wing and that her clubmate, 26-year-old Katrina Barker (also living in the area), would play beside her in the centres. The two players are from The Waratahs club in Newcastle and line up against ACT Women Brumbies at GIO Stadium in Canberra at 5pm on Saturday. Clifton said Maya and Katrina played exceptionally well in a NSW Women’s rugby trial match earlier this month after being elected in the state squad late last year.

Cusack’s view of Opinion in paper Hon Catherine Cusack MLC responds to Mr Grant Kennett’s Letter to Editor Dear News Of The Area,
IN response to the Opinion piece by Mr Grant Kennett’s about Mambo Wetlands (Port Stephens News Of The Area 13/2/2019 ‘What’s the Cost’). Mr Kennett’s should have featured this picture of him wearing a Kate Washington T-Shirt and ALP cap as he stands over me, pressing into me in a disgusting effort to physically bully and derail a Mambo media conference with Mayor Ryan Palmer. There are other photos
media@newsofthearea.com.au
of Mr Kennett wearing a different T-Shirt and screaming abuse at me and Jaimie Abbott till he was literally red in the face. Mr Kennett’s central claim, published in your newspaper, is that the Department of Planning “has confirmed that any offer made by the Government to buy back the land, will be made assuming the owner HAS approval for construction of a dwelling.” This statement not true. As is his claim of a $1 million price. Catherine Cusack MLC
“Their selection shows the strength of the NHRU Women’s competition and that local players can make it to the top,” said Clifton. “Maya and Katrina have trained extremely well since late last year and it is no surprise that the NSW selectors have named them in the run-on team.” NSW are defending Super W champions and Maya is one of 10 debutants in the side for the opening Buildcorp Super W match. It will be Katrina’s third appearance for NSW. The NSW v ACT Brumbies Super W match is part of a double header at GIO Stadium with the Brumbies men’s team taking on the Chiefs (New Zealand) at 7.45pm Clifton said the selection of Maya and Katrina follows the inclusion last weekend of Hunter product, Harry Johnson-Holmes, as the first-choice prop in the NSW men’s team that narrowly lost to the Hurricanes (New Zealand) 20-19. Johnson-Holmes, formerly from the Wanderers club before moving to Sydney, played 17 times off the bench last season for the NSW Waratahs before being named in the First XV last week. He is also in the starting side for NSW’s match against Japan Sunwolves in Tokyo on Saturday after a strong frontrower’s display last week.

The Probus Club of Port Stephens has hit an all-time high for the district after 9 Inductees were welcomed into the club at the last meeting. That leaves the membership at a total of 157 and counting. Ann Gibson of the Probus Club of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “It is normal for the number of members to fluctuate but this is a great achievement for a very active club.” The Team at the NOTA congratulate Cyril and Patti on their incredible 78 years of marriage.

The Butcherbird Tour By Kelly MAY
AUSTRALIAN icon John Williamson will celebrate the release of his 52nd album, ‘Butcherbird’, with a national tour that includes Port Stephens. On Friday 31 May Wests Nelson Bay Diggers will host this true Australian legend. He will share his latest original compositions complemented by songs from his massive back catalogue of constantly requested favourites from an amazing fortyeight-year career. The tour will again see Mr Williamson take his audience on a journey through the country, combining humour, romance, environmental issues, travelling songs and campfire stories woven together by the master storyteller’s songs.
The passage of time and life itself is captured in striking images. New songs such as ‘Don’t Forget Me When I’m Gone’ and ‘Looking for a Story’ will bring his audience to tears, balanced by the humour of songs such as ‘When My Horse Came In’ and ‘Simpson Desert’. Never one to shy away from controversy or issues he’s passionate about, ‘Pigs on the River’ will be applauded. ‘Buddy and Slim’ pays tribute to the industry’s founders. It’s no wonder he is one of the most sought-after live performers in Australia. Mr Williamson said, ‘I’m still having fun touring, I guess I will keep going until 2020, my fiftieth year in the industry.” “For me, it’s all about entertainment, just like my concerts and I can’t wait to get on the
Muree Golf Club
road with this new tour,’ John was inducted into the prestigious ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010. He is the recipient of more awards than he cares to mention, particularly as he considers the reaction from his audiences the most important recognition. Nevertheless, his three ARIA awards, 25 Golden Guitars, numerous MO awards, APRA

awards, multiple Platinum and Gold albums and more than 4 million album sales are recognition well deserved. From his roots as a man of the land, he makes people feel proud to be Australian and rightly deserves to be seen as a living legend; an Australian icon. His audiences now regularly span four generations. John will release his new album ‘Butcherbird’ in August 2018 and tour Australia to sell-out shows.
A Knight with Denver By Margie TIERNEY
q
TREVOR Knight, one of Australia’s finest country/folk entertainers is heading to Tea Gardens for a one night only performance. The singer/songwriter is bringing his highly acclaimed show “Rocky Mountain Echoes” to town, on Friday 8 March. As you’d expect, it features the music of the late John Denver. “I first met John when I was traveling as a young folk singer in the USA, and he was a great influence on my music and songwriting,” Trevor said. “This show is not a “tribute” show, it is a celebration of a great artist I had the privilege to know and learn from personally.” Playing his Acoustic Guitar and 5 string Banjo, Trevor says he’ll take you on a magical journey back to the romance, fun and excitement of this wonderful songwriter. As a songwriter himself, Trevor Knight has won two Golden Guitar Awards with many more nominations from the Tamworth Country Music Festival. His ‘Rocky Mountain Echoes’ show is being staged at St Stephens Church Hall in Witt Street in Tea Gardens. The show starts at 7 pm and tickets are $15 and available at the door. q Nelson Bay Strikers Foundation Member Dave Connors, Still Pitching after 24 years!
THE Nelson Bay “Strikers” Baseball Club have been a force in the Newcastle Baseball competition since the foundation of the Club in 1994. The Club is working hard to reboot in 2019 after sitting out the 2018 season. “Last year was a very difficult year for the club with injuries , new babies and key players leaving the area” Club manager , Bill Marshall said. “We didn’t field a team for the first time since the formation of the club in 1994.” The Club has been in the competition for 24 years and have won quite a few

premierships, including 4 in their best year 1997. Not being in a position to field a team or play in the competition last year was a shock. “This year we have 18 regular and new players keen to get back on the diamond at Don Waring Oval , at Salamander Bay. This group of players and organisers include foundation members Dave Connors , Warrick Lilly and Ray Anderson and four of the juniors from year 2000. The Club aims to be more than competitive in winter 2019 and are looking for 5 to 10 additional players to allow us to form two teams.” The 2019 winter baseball competition runs from midApril 2019 till September 2019 with home and away games to be played Saturday afternoons (away) and Sunday afternoons (home). The Newcastle baseball competition area forms a triangle between Belmont, Maitland and Nelson Bay. The team is getting ready to pitch with practice starting the first Sunday in February.
