IN a convincing win for the Liberal National Coalition, Premier Gladys Berejiklian is not only the first woman ever elected Premier of NSW but the Liberal National Coalition has won a historic third term for the first time in over 50 years. The Premier has spent a great deal of time in Port Stephens in the lead up to the Election and the win which looks to see a majority Government has made many promises which should see a new TAFE in the Bay and a link road to Fingal Bay among other things. In conceding to Kate Washington, Liberal Candidate Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, โKate had an incumbency factor and has had four years in the seat. โWe were going for an unprecedented third term. โI was always going to be the underdog but Iโm proud that we were able to put Port Stephens into play in the seat. โThe people of Port
โIโm very grateful that the people of Port Stephens have placed their trust in me again.โ
Stephens have only benefited from this,โ Ms Abbott said. โEven though I wasnโt elected, our team feels we accomplished a lot for this electorate. โThe electorate has benefited tremendously. Bill Doran who ran as an Independent candidate said, โFirstly, may I congratulate Kate on a very decisive win. โSecondly, I thank those individuals who voted for me and I apologise for not making a better showing or at least beating the Greens. โNow watch as the excuses start to flow from both parties about why nothing gets done!โ he said. Mr Doran is planning on dedicating the next four years to โharassing the Government to fulfil their promisesโ. Theresa Taylor who stood for the Animal Justice Party (AJP) said, โWe are pleased with the results so far, especially as this is the first time the AJP has stood in Port Stephens .

โWe know people care about our native animals and the environment and we will continue to work hard to protect them. โThe AJP has had a candidate in every electorate in the Hunter and the results have been very encouraging. โPeople have responded well to our message of kindness, equality, rationality and nonviolence for humans, animals and the environment.
The last word has to go to the winner of the seat of Port Stephens Kate Washington who will now sit for another four years in opposition to the Government. COMMUNITY reaction to the change in management of Tanilba Bayโs Post Office seems to give its stamp of approval to new licensee Peter Wheeler. Peter moved to the area from Sydney some twelve months ago for a lifestyle change and does not regret the decision one little bit. โBaulkham Hills was becoming very much a rat-race,โ he said. โI had previously worked for Australia Post for thirteen years

VERLIE Napper a Founding member of the Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club turned ninety and the celebrations have been full of family, friends and fun. To kick things off, Verlie celebrated her Birthday with a High Tea at the Anchorage with two of her three brothers and her daughters. Only a dozen of Verlie Napperโs 22 Great Grandchildren were able to join her in Celebrating her 90th Birthday last week. Jill Stephenson of the Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club told News Of The Area, โMore than 100 of Verlieโs Family and Friends celebrated in the Hall at Port Stephens Uniting Church, including, a long-lost Cousin from Junee.โ Many of Verlieโs family and friends live overseas and were unable to attend. Verlie has lived in the Bay for 31 years after moving from Canberra. She now resides at Harbourside Haven. Verlie has a large extended family. Verlieโs Brother, the Reverend Tony Winter and his wife, Annette, spent some time with the congregation of the Uniting Church while visiting for Verlieโs birthday. They shared their adventures at the Soldiers Point and Port Stephens Uniting Church of their work with Frontier Services, where Tony served as Bush Chaplain at Port Hedland, or as Rev John Flynn of the Royal Flying Doctor Service used to say โBeyond the Last Fenceโ. Reverend Tony and Annette still travel to many outback areas, sharing their stories and digging in to help, even if it means building fences, climbing ladders to paint or climbing scaffolding. They have even been seen helping in the refurbishment of the John Flynn Memorial Church, in Alice Springs.

JUPITER ascended today in Port Stephens with the launch of Caring For Our Port Stephens Youthโs (COPSY) Counselling service and space on the Tomaree Peninsula. The new service has been christened Jupiter, in deference to the planet having been used as an early navigation mark for travellers. Jupiter will help our youth find their way. The local community came out in force to support positive actions for Port Stephens youth and to support them through providing a place that is welcoming, safe, and confidential. Port Stephens has the highest rates of mental and behavioural problems in NSW. Meryl Swanson in addressing the launch said, โThere are 2,534 12-24 year olds in Port Stephens currently affected by significant Mental Health problems.โ Year 12 student at Tomaree High School Rhiana Mackenzie recognised her participation in the two year process of creating Jupiter, โAs Real Futures Foundation Ambassadors we gave input into how the space would look and feel.โ Rhiana believes that the service
will reduce the stigma that young people face through accessing services within the education system. Tomaree High Schoolโs Head Teacher of Welfare Vicki McCleer noted that it can take up to four months for students to be seen through normal channels; Jupiter will change this for the better. Another difference is that Jupiter provides counselling and psychology services to Port Stephens youth for free. Jupiter will be providing

By Marian SAMPSON THEREโS one pesky pup that is lucky that Port Stephens has a great crew at the Port Stephens SES Raymond Terrace Unit and Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue NSW. The NSW SES was called to this incident at about 14:50 this afternoon with a message stating that a puppy was trapped inside a cavity wall. Phil Hudson, Area Commander of the Port Stephens and Dungog SES told News Of The Area, โWhat Port Stephens SES found on arrival was that the little fella had discovered an old set of brick steps underneath a decking which had a hole in the top of it just big enough for a puppy to squeeze into and fall down a hole into the steps.โ Fire and Rescue NSW
from Raymond Terrace also responded and began knocking a hole in the wall underneath the house. With a coordinated effort between the Emergency Services and a local Vet the combined team managed to make a hole big enough for the little fella to be safely removed from his predicament with minimal damage to the house. โThe little fella was told not to do it again, and returned to his owner safe and well,โ he said. The Port Stephens Raymond Terrace Unit has a specialist large (and small) animal rescue team that is often called upon to recover domestic animals including farm animals as part of their normal combat role: most recently a cow was rescued from mud near Six Mile Road.
Port Stephens SES is comprised of a volunteer team. Giacomo Arnott, Acting Deputy Captain, Fire & Rescue NSW Raymond Terrace Station told News Of The Area, โOur crew is very pleased that we were able to rescue the pup so quickly and reunite it with its owner. โThe owner was very thankful, and quite overwhelmed at all the help that came to support her in saving her pup. โWith a wide range of skills and equipment, Fire & Rescue Raymond Terrace pride ourselves on being able to quickly and professionally respond to any incident and get the job done,โ he said. The Puppy and its owner are doing well.

MAKE THE CALL ASK YOUR ENERGY COMPANY FOR A BETTER DEAL As of January 1st, providers have dropped prices on their most expensively priced plans due to pressure from the Government.
โPHENOMINAL!โ This was the word used by a family spokesperson when asked about the response of the Tilligerry community to an accident involving Craig Casey and his son Schon. Both suffered severe burns in a boat fire recently at Lemon Tree Passage. โWe would like to thank the emergency services and the wellwishers,โshe said. The wider community has also done a magnificent job with the โGoFundMeโ initiative,โ she added. โWe have been overwhelmed with support but really need some privacy at this difficult time,โ she said. โAt the moment both Craig and Schon are in a stable condition. Craig is in the ICU at Royal North Shore Hospital and Schon is at Westmead Childrenโs Hospital in intensive care as well,โ she said. โWe will pass on any more details as they come to hand.โ she concluded. Residents wishing to donate to the โGoFundMeโ appeal can find details on โTilligerry News & Views,โ a local facebook site.
But if you really want to save, simply call your energy company and ask them for a better deal. You could lower your bill by $400 a year. Visit our website for tips on calling your energy company.

MARCH was a busy month for the Fingal Bay Probus Club as it marks the start of a new financial year, and the election of new Officers. The new committee members are, President Jenny Wright, Treasurer Eric Platzer, Secretary Graeme Paul, Vice President Julia Redlich, Vice President Estelle Latham and Editor Trish McClung. It is also a time for thanking those members who arranged some of our meetings that celebrate fun and friendship. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, โRecent gatherings included a barbecue at Dutchies Beach where Verlaine Griffith thanked her helpers Vicki and John Archer; a Norman-and-RosamundMartin-run wine appreciation afternoon at Lynn Moffittโs home; and a delicious morning tea arranged by Adele Hassett at her home. She often wonders what Fingal Bay Probus Club would do without its volunteers. Fingal Bay Probus Club meets on the second Monday of every month at 9.30am at The Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. Future members visitors and guests are welcome to these meetings to learn more about a Club that thrives on friendship and fun, offering a selection of activities and a variety of guest speakers. This club is full of fun and lively conversation with members forming friendships to support each other through life. Some read together, some shop, some walk: they all enjoy the positive benefits of spending time in their community.

Dear Jasminda,
Now the NSW vote is over, I just had a question arising from a dispute between my wife and I at the recent polling booth. Should you take all voting material even though you know who you are voting for?
Is Landscaping Worth The Cost?
IN my opinion, this all depends on how much you are considering spending and what landscaping you are thinking of doing. It really must be relative to the price level of the property. I can tell you it is far more difficult to sell a property that looks barren, than it is with a neat and tidy low maintenance and stylish garden layout with beautiful landscaping. It gives a property the magic โwowโ factor. When you have defined pathways, clean and neat driveways etc your prospective purchaser, will feel like they have that move in nothing to do feeling as soon as they pull up out the front. If you have a pool, a well thought out landscaped surround can make it feel as though it is your own private resort. Pools have a reputation for being high maintenance. To overcome this objection from buyers, display your pool as though it is a benefit & a lifestyle choice, one that the purchaserโs family and friends will enjoy. Remember no fussy plants! Few people these days have time for a high maintenance garden. Hope this helps Denise

Community Event Tackles Number Plate Theft
By Liz MUDD
NUMBER plate theft is not just an inconvenience. Stolen number plates can be fitted to a stolen vehicle and the car used for committing criminal offences including petrol theft. Neighbourhood Watch Medowie is holding a free community event to provide a solution to counteract number plate theft. The event to be held on 30 March, 2019 will
run from 9.00am to 12noon in the BullโnโBush Hotel carpark on Ferodale Road, Medowie. Free supply and fitting of anti theft number plate screws will be provided to car owners. The Police Bus will be in attendance giving residents an opportunity to meet local Police Officers and discuss policing matters that are of concern to the community. Also on display will be the latest in home safety. All residents are invited to attend.

AH, Mr KH, what a delightful question. Isnโt voting day exciting? Itโs sort of like the grand final of politics, but itโs our economic and social livelihood at stake rather than our favourite team. Still, Aussies approach it with almost as much attention to detail and passion. Almost. Not quite. Nowhere near in fact. But there you go. It is easy to be apathetic in a democracy. Maybe, as a woman, voting holds special significance, because even in this progressive nation, women werenโt able to vote in NSW until 1902. Indigenous women had to wait another six decades. Think about that while Mrs Mervan is handing you a democracy sausage with sauce and onions at the next election, Mr KH. Now, back to your question. I think, whatever you do, it is best to be polite. The role of a pollieโs vollie is not an easy one. They spend weeks, indeed months, in the lead-up, dragging their kids and hound around to distribute pamphlets, fielding calls and questions, suffering abuse even though they are just wearing a Team Kate or Team Jaimie or Team Animal Justice t-shirt and doing their bit as the unsung heroes of our political system. So, this dispute of yours. I have an image. Your wife loaded up with more voting paraphernalia than a kid at the Royal Easter Show, and you with your arms crossed, a โdonโt try me, Busterโ glare at anyone who attempted to inform you with their โHow to Voteโ leaflet. And then, at the cake stall, your refusal to buy a cake with green icing, your โI know what youโre up to, you tree-hugging Commieโ to the kid with an icecream container full of five cent coins going towards a new school shade sail. Finally, your ability to vote freely with no extra paper taking up space in your booth. Sneering at the voter next to you with her seven leaflets, car keys, glasses, and keep cup while you folded your seven metre ballot paper into an origami sports stadium. And then the silence. The silence as you and the keep-cup woman headed home together, resolute in your individual way of doing things. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

THIS week Australia donned orange and celebrated Harmony Day and its 20th anniversary. For the first time Harmony Day has been renamed Harmony Week recognising diversity and inclusion activities that take place throughout the entire week. Harmony Week will include 21 March, which is the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Harmony Week is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Since 1999, more than 77,000 Harmony Week events have been held in Childcare Centres, schools, community groups, Churches, businesses and Federal, State and local Government agencies across Australia.
With nearly half of all Australians living having been born overseas or having a parent who was, means that Australians have a broad diversity, identifying with over 300 ancestries. There are more than 70 Indigenous languages spoken across the country and these languages were celebrated in Port Stephens. Harmony Day was celebrated throughout Port Stephens and Irrawang High School was as always keen to play their part. Lue Fagan of Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, โOur special Harmony Day assembly was held on 21 March and was again a showcase and celebration of the diversity of cultures within our school community. โJed Edgar-Jones gave a Welcome to Country in Gathang (the language of the Worimi), then the ATSI students performed a number of dances,โ she said. Irrawang Highsโ Thai students also gave a traditional water blessing and staff and students from different countries and the Drum Corps performed, bringing in yet another cultural element to the celebrations.
COUNCILLOR Steve Tucker has been exploring possible solutions to the traffic problems generated by parents picking up children at the front of Tanilba Bay Public School.
โThis has been of concern to the community for a long time,โ he said. โAfter consultation with the school, the โHabitatโ and engineering staff, we have developed a solution

One Option for Tilly School Parking Debate which will take quite a while and a great deal of money to fix,โ he added. โThe road (King Albert Ave) in front of the school actually extends towards Mallabula,โ

โBy widening and extending the existing โHabitatโ car park we can create more parking spaces and have a one way in, one way out turnaround facility for picking up and dropping off school
children,โ Cr Tucker said. Now for the bad news: Cr Tucker said that Shire engineers cost the work at $324,000 which involves tar sealing and no drainage. โResidents will need to lobby their State member for funding,โ he said. โPort Stephens Council can supply road base retrieved from local road renewal sites but it is not our (the ratepayersโ) responsibility to pay for school car parks.โ Councill Tucker also believes that by using Diggers Dve at the rear of the school as a pick up / drop off point, much of the current problem would vanish. โThere are two rear gates and a footpath here in a very low traffic zone. Itโs an ideal spot and should be used more by parents,โ he added.

Hurdman State Championship Gold By Marian SAMPSON
HURDMAN was out in front at the Little Athletics State Championships in March. Shari Hurdman who lives in the Bay and attends Tomaree High School competed at the Little Athletics State Championships at Homebush. Unfortunately wild weather cancelled one of her events to Long Jump, however even in the wet this young athlete was ahead of the field taking out first place and the gold medals in both the 100 and 200 metre sprints. Anja Hurdman told News Of the Area, โThe extremely wet weather conditions didnโt stop Shari from displaying her competitiveness on the track.โ Hurdman competed in the Under 12s and achieved a time of 13.26 sec for the 100 metre sprint and 27.10 seconds in the 200 metre event. Shari is thrilled about her achievements and has trained hard all season, she is looking forward to a break prior to the Nationals. Shari will also be competing in Athletics representing Tomaree

News Of The Area Success at Head of the River for Hudson FROM Page 16
Regatta is one of the premier events on the Rowing Australia calendar and attracts entries from all over the country. At 14 years of age Hudson will be the youngest of the Hunter Valley Roving Clubโs athletes and will step up to row in the Under 17 years division. As an under 16 years athlete, Hudson would normally race over 1000m. Rowing as an Under 17 sees the race distance extend to 2000m. Hudson has adjusted his training regime to increase his fitness and stamina for the longer race distances. Hudson will row in the Coxed Quad Event with a new
team consisting of Nikolai Crawford, James Patton, Cooper Blatchely with Hannah Scarborough or Alice Arnott as cox. The team will share a house in the athletes village during the Regatta and will attend seminars and workshops covering subjects such as sports nutrition and psychology as well as intensive team training sessions. Hudson said. โThis is a great opportunity for me to gain experience at an international Regatta especially for someone my age.โ The event will be held at the Sydney International Rowing Centre from 25 to 31 March 2019.

Rowing to Success
ALL the hard work, early morning training starts in cold water is paying off for Benjamin Hudson. The Medowie Year 9 student recently rowed at the NSW Schoolboy Head of the River Regatta at Sydney International Rowing Centre. Over 750 athletes from 27 schools contested the event on 17 March 2016. Hudson paired with Tyler Bunt, 15, represented Hunter Valley Grammar School in the Schoolboy Year 9 Double Scull. Hudson and Tyler performed strongly in the heats, making the final and bringing home Silver for the event. The Schoolboy Year 9 1st Coxed Quad Scull saw Hudson and Bunt team up with Cooper Blatchely and Nicholas Melmeth with Hannah Scarborough as Cox. In a very hotly contested final the crew finished just outside the medals for 4th place. Hudsonโs talent has been recognised with an invitation to row at the Sydney International Rowing Regatta issued by Hunter Valley Grammar School Rowing Club.
