and a good alternative that helped students get through high school. “People who don’t fit in at school or find it hard to attend for a lot of reasons, find Alesco a safe place. “Teachers are here to help you.| “Classes are smaller and students support each other. “So many of us might never have completed school if it wasn’t for Alesco,” he said. Typically, students of Alesco have not been able to connect with traditional schooling, and are at risk, or vulnerable.

The school currently caters for 15 students and will be able to enrol up to 35 students in Years 9 through to Year 12 in 2020. Alesco Head Teacher, Wendy Ratcliffe, who has been working with the school since it was established, three years through a partnership with PCYC, Council and the community and has resulted in great education outcomes for local teenagers. Wendy Ratcliffe told News Of The Area, “The main thing about Alesco is it is community based, creating a community feeling within the campus. Alesco offers education

as a social construct, paired with high staff to student ratios and a dedicated youth support worker on the campus to assist students in accessing the services that they need. The College provides young people who are unlikely to find success in a traditional school environment with a safe and supportive environment in an adult learning framework, it is all first names and students are treated as adults in a community where the teachers and students all have access to the same areas. Alesco is a registered and accredited school that was created by Atwea College (formerly WEA Hunter) in 2001 as an alternative

learning environment for young people wanting to complete years 9 to 12 with locations in Newcastle, Tuncurry, Cessnock, Raymond Terrace and on the Tomaree Peninsula. More than 60 local young people have completed their school studies at the Tomaree campus with many of them now moving into jobs and some graduating into further studies. “The school offers young people support in their lives no matter how challenging life can be,” she said. The goal is to ensure that these students attain their HSC as there is a great deal of research around greater success in life for those who have attained an HSC. Enrolments for 2020 are open to interested students.

Club see first hand bushfires impact By Marian SAMPSON

PROBUS Club of Fingal Bay’s trip to Port Macquarie coincided with bush fires, smoke and injured koalas. The members of the Probus Club of Fingal Bay have recently jaunted off on a trip to Port Macquarie but they didn’t realise what the magnitude of the bushfires impact would be on the local koala population. It wasn’t planned that way, but we have to take the bush fires and weather events that are the hand we are dealt with. After all no-one expected the extent of loss of life or

injured koalas from these bushfires. While it was certainly not the best timing, the group managed to enjoy themselves despite the bushfires which are raging across the region. The group headed off on a voyage down the Hastings River and visited the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital just in time to see the first koalas injured in the fires being cared for. Since the visit, the facility has been inundated with patients and has raised over a million

dollars for the care of the species which is on the brink of extinction. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “We were privileged to see those marvellous volunteers caring for their charges and receiving koalas so tragically harmed in the early stages of the recent bushfires.”

The members based themselves out of the Edgewater Caravan Park and held barbeques and group breakfasts. The group also visited the Abundance Gardens. The trip to Port Macquarie was organised by Club member Ross Jennings, who delivered a wonderful mix of social and sightseeing opportunities.

diagnosis has had on her and her family is huge. Her Mother spends hours beside her hospital bed whilst juggling her other children who have weekly retreats to their Grandparents’ home half an hour away to arrange school trips twice a day. Father is working long hours to help sustain the financial burden of her medical bills, ongoing prescriptions, and travel costs. Mindy’s social life is almost non-existent due to her immune system being compromised. Ms Lauren Boyle who works at Lakeside Leisure Centre teaching Mindy’s siblings, saw the strain it was taking on the family and

decided to organise a fundraising day. It will be held on Sunday, 8 December from 10am to 2pm at the Swimming Centre to help ease the financial burden on the family. Activities on the day will include head shaving, coloured hairspray, sausage sizzle, rock painting, face painting, and an appearance by Norbet the Inflatable Dragon. Mindy’s Mum, Ms Cassandra Beer-Stewart, told News Of The Area, “The Doctors, Nurses and support staff are wonderful; their praise can’t be sung loud enough.” “Mindy has been out of her public school since

diagnosis, but has been able to continue her schooling and preparing for High School through the Ronald McDonald house School program.” “We are extremely honoured and grateful for the support from Lauren and all the staff of Lakeside Leisure Centre to host the event on our behalf.” “The dedication and kindness shown to us is invaluable. Thank you very much. “Also a huge thank you to the community for all your support.” Mindy has another couple of years of treatment to go before she will be completely in remission and cancer free. She is one very strong young lady.

A Lion’s Help Christmas Appeal Helps Bushfire Victims WITH bushfires raging north, the natural environment scorched, loss of animals and their habitat, and people experiencing devastating loss of their homes and belongings, the Medowie Lions Club has been quick to act. told News Of The Area, “As a Club we are about service, so we decided rather than raise money, we would look to facilitate the donation of goods.” “Right now the victims are in emergency accommodation but when the people move into their own homes, they will need goods, such as kitchenware, linen, and other items.” “This will be a second wave of things that people need.” Mr Tunbridge also said, “We would like to give a huge thanks to Kennard’s Hire at

Heatherbrae who have donated a two-tonne truck to transport all the donated goods to those in need.” “The Bull ‘n’ Bush have opened up their front room to collect donations.” “Our Club would really like to thank the teachers and students of Wirreanda Public School for their generous contribution to our Bushfires Christmas Appeal.” Mr Tunbridge and the Medowie Lions were humbled by the support of locals who showed their community spirit with bulk donations of much needed goods.

Santa Paws and Santa Claus

Visit From Santa Courtesy Of Williamtown Rotary Club By Heather SHARP

GET ready for Santa Claus, who will also be acting as Santa Paws for all the children, pets, and youngat-heart in Medowie this Christmas. Despite a busy schedule getting gifts ready for boys and girls, Santa will be attending the Little Pantry Café in Medowie. On Saturday 7 and 8 December, Santa will be available for the seventh year in a row. Santa is sponsored by Williamtown Rotary and comes in the form of Mr Rod ‘Santa’ Starr, a semi-retired veterinarian who has lived in Port Stephens for 35 years. He has been involved in many community organisations, and since selling his practice has enjoyed being Santa in Medowie for the last 7 years. Rotary put on Santa as an option for Medowie children, and their pets, to have affordable photos taken with an authentic Santa. All funds raised support Rotary in their community service endeavours. Ms Judith McGowan from Williamtown Rotary told News Of The Area, “Over the years we have watched babies grow up and have many repeat visitors.”

Nominations close tomorrow for Nominations are closing at 5pm Friday Port Awards 29 November for Port Stephens Awards

NOMINATIONS are closing soon for the Port Stephens Annual Awards. For the first time, environmentally-minded people will be recognised for their contribution to the community. Held on Australia Day each year, the awards are an opportunity to celebrate the people who have made an outstanding contribution to Port Stephens. Community Development and Engagement Coordinator Amber Herrmann says Council is looking for nominations before they close on Friday 29 November 2019. “The Annual Awards are a wonderful way to show someone you value the contribution they make to our community. Whether that’s by volunteering, being a role model for others, enabling others to succeed, or excelling in their chosen field,” Ms Herrmann said.

“This year, we’re excited to have a new category — Environmental Citizen of the Year — recognising groups or individuals who have shown significant service to the environment. “This could be someone who tried to preserve the environment, reduce litter and improve recycling, or someone who has used the Return and Earn scheme to fundraise for a meaningful cause,” she said. “We’re also seeking nominations for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Freeman of Port Stephens, the Port Stephens Medal, Sportsperson of the Year and Cultural Endeavour. “If you know someone who goes a little bit further, opens their arms a little bit wider or gives that little bit extra to inspire us all to make every day better — nominate them today!” Port Stephens Citizen of the Year for 2018 Ben Niland

Christmas Lights for Charity

By Julie McKimm

LOCAL Medowie resident, Trevor Wimmer, is putting on a Christmas light display this year that will be hard to beat. The display will be choreographed to music, so you can tune your car radio into to listen to the music as you drive by.

The radio station details will be displayed during the light display. Trevor also proposes to fundraise for the Royal Flying Doctors Service and Angel Flight as his way of giving back to the community. Trevor told News Of The Area, “I would love your support in raising funds for these vital services.” The display will be at 94 Ferodale Road, Medowie and will be running from 1

December until 31 December. Trevor added, “You may see the lights going up over the next few weeks, and if you are lucky enough, you may catch a glimpse of the testing.” “I look forward to your support and generosity that this great community is renowned for,” he said. Certainly one to add to the list when you’re planning your Christmas Light Tour around Medowie.
