3 years ago we had just 40 members, and now we have 230 we are a strong voice and advocate for business right across the peninsular.” The Chamber has recently formed local business precincts and has been getting out to speak to local business owners which is proving to be a huge success. Bush Fire Season Starts
Friendship Group trip to Fighter World
By Marian SAMPSON
BUSH fire season is fast approaching and it is time to make sure that all households have a bush fire plan. Port Stephens has many areas of bushland and properties adjacent to high risk areas for bushfires. The environment and climate create a risk to lives and property. Our actions in the lead up to bush fire season can make all the difference. Dennis Peters, Captain of Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue NSW told News Of The Area, “The bushfire danger period for the Port Stephens area has been brought forward to 1 September 2019 due to poor conditions locally. “We all have a personal responsibility to be prepared for what is predicted to be a nasty bushfire season. “We encourage everyone to prepare a bushfire evacuation plan.” Visit https://www.rfs. n s w. g o v. a u / r e s o u r c e s / bush-fire-survival-plan to build your families bush fire survival plan in around 20 minutes.

Building a bush fire survival plan involves four simple steps: discuss, plan, know the alert levels and saving all the right phone numbers, web pages and apps to make getting the right information easy in an emergency. It is important that people not only have a plan but run through that plan with their families, and make sure you keep an eye on conditions and existing fires in case your home is threatened. It is important to prepare your home, and know where to find information in an emergency. “Our crew will be preparing for the bushfire season with dedicated training sessions, patrolling
the urban-bush interface, particularly around Lakeside and Riverview Ridge, and making sure our local fire hydrants are in good condition,” he said. Some of the things we should do now are to clear gutters, and make sure that our bushfire plans include how we move not only people but pets. The fires near me webpage is an excellent recourse for monitoring bush fires and can be found at https://www.rfs.nsw.gov. au/fire-information/firesnear-me. Next week read about the different fire warning levels and what we can do as a community to be better prepared.
Soldiers Point. Chamber is also in heavy discussions with TAFE to bring the preElection promise of a $7 Million dollar TAFE Connected Learning Centre in Nelson Bay, to fruition and next week we have professor Alex Zolinsky, Vice Chancellor of Newcastle University coming to meet with us in Nelson Bay and we will be discussing what opportunities we have for University presence on the Peninsular. “Our quarterly business breakfasts are always a great success and we regularly have around 100 business
people attend, network, and listen to very informative speakers,” she said. The Tomaree Business chamber has a wonderful group of volunteers who assist with the day to day running of the Chamber and a very active board of directors. Business Development Manager Peter Clough is instrumental in growing our membership base so rapidly. We look forward to attending the State Business Awards in Sydney in November this year where we hope to bring home the best business Chamber Award for NSW.

the resultant $350,000 commitment from Council, including a 7 day makeover with the legendary David Engwicht from Creative Communities International. In Shoal Bay we are advocating for changes to parking and more amenities, and for Nelson Bay we successfully lobbied Port Stephens Council to commit to $1.4 million to knock down the unusable multi deck car park and create more parking. THE Port Stephens Friendship Group had visited to Fighter World, on 20 August, with over 20 members attending. One of those members, Noel Finch was most impressed with all the exhibits in the hangar, wonderful aircraft and munitions were all there and easily accessible.
“We had a wonderful guide, who directed us to the next hangar,” Mr Finch said. “And there she was! A wonder to behold, a Vampire Jet.” Mr Finch told News Of The Area, “I started my employment as an Apprentice at DeHavilland Aircraft factory at Bankstown Airfield in 1957 and worked there, building
these ‘Ladies of the Sky’ for many years.” “To see one so well restored and on display made my day,” he said. This was just one of many and varied trips the Port Stephens Friendship Group takes and all are welcome to join. Monthly meetings are at the Diggers Club, Nelson Bay on the last Tuesday of each Month at 5pm.

Building Commenced at Koala Sanctuary
By Marian SAMPSON
THIS week saw the turning of the first sod in the building process of the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary at One Mile Beach. At the ceremony which signifies the end of planning, and the beginning of the future, Worimi Elder Uncle Neville Lilly gave a Welcome to Country which was followed by a moving and cleansing smoking ceremony performed by Worimi man Lee Ridgeway. Fittingly, Sanctuary means, a place where someone fleeing persecution comes to feel safe, the hope is that injured and sick koalas will find a safe place at the new Koala Sanctuary.
Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “I am so excited for Port Stephens Koalas, the volunteers came to me before all this started, they said; that they wanted to stop the Koalas in Port Stephens from becoming extinct and we have a plan.” The volunteers presented plans and gained funding through Kate Washington’s office. “This provided the seed funding to get the ball rolling, and to see the culmination of this here today is very, very exciting,” she said. The NSW Government has made a significant investment in the Koala Sanctuary and Minister for the Environment Matt Kean stated that “Before European settlement the koala populations on the East Coast of Australia were abundant, and the remaining population is under threat and we need to make sure that this population thrives now and into the future, this is the start of that initiative. Dear Jasminda,

SELLING IN SPRING “What are the best colours to use in accessory styling for selling in Spring?”
WITH its warm, rich colours, Winter is a ‘nesting’ time. Spring is all about lightness and brightness and it’s a great idea to reflect that in your styling. Select from soft, light colours such as lemon, blush, mint and sky blue for your soft furnishings such as cushions and throws. And add some nice crisp white to the mix. A vase of flowers in your kitchen and family spaces – yellow and/or white flowers give a great ’pop’ of colour without being distracting. If they’re picked from your garden, that gives a lovely personal touch, but cut flowers from a stall will do the trick nicely. Increase longevity by cutting the bottom of the stalks on an angle and dropping in a dash of sugar after a few days. As you prepare for your inspections, remember to open your curtains and blinds so that your interior is drenched in that lovely Spring light. And clean those windows! It’s amazing just how much new light that lets in, and of course your exterior looks so much brighter through squeaky clean windows. Denise

My friend has invited me to a Country Music event where you are given the opportunity to shed your clothes to make a stand about mental health issues. I don’t know if this is a good thing for me to attend. Mrs KP, Boat Harbour
Dear Mrs KP, Ok, I’m just trying to fully comprehend the nuances of this one, Mrs KP. Are you saying that you’ve been invited to an event where you have to endure hours of country music and get your gear off and that is supposed to be a positive approach to reducing the stigma of mental health? This is one of those examples where a committee has come up with a neat phrase: ‘strip away the stigma’ that works very well on paper, but perhaps less well set against the harsh and unforgiving rays of a setting-sun festival. Now, I don’t know about you, Mrs KP, but the thought of a group of naked, middle-aged Country music aficionados swaying in the breeze to “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”, lining up for their lamb kebabs and getting jiggy with it on the complimentary shuttle bus are scenarios that could potentially increase mental health issues, not reduce them. Country music is mournful enough with its tropes of nostalgia and relationship struggles, so I’m not really sure if adding the tension of being naked in front of strangers is going to work well. I’m seeing a big dose of body dysmorphia in the mosh pit. Do you think, Mrs KP, that you may have misread the finer details? Perhaps there is a nude fundraiser prior to the event. Do your research. You don’t want to be turning up in nothing but your holster and spurs only to realise you got the facts wrong. That could really mess up your mental health. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

SO often the news we hear about koalas is one of habitat destruction and being on the brink of extinction. This week however, this much loved Australian marsupial has had a positive news story with koala watchers across Port Stephens delighted with the discovery of a new koala joey. Naming rights were given to Hunter Water, who are major sponsors of Port Stephens Koala, and they chose Patu, which is a Wonnarua word for water. This koala joey has had the most special entry into the world. His mother, Eila, herself had a lifesaving rescue when she was caught up in the December 2018 Mambo Wetlands fire. It is thought that Eila climbed a tree after the fire had passed through causing her to receive serious burns to her hands, feet, and chin. Her joey, Cohen had 17551 been on her back so escaped 5 6 7 serious injury and was released back into the wild on Australia Day, 25 January 2019. 10 That her joey was able to survive the trauma of the 12 fire has been put down to, as stated in a press release,16 15 Eila’s “motherly instincts and the care she received 18 upon rescue during intensive care.” Little Patu was discovered 24 to be growing in 23

Spring’s In The Air Win
By Marian SAMPSON
HERE in Port Stephens, we’re lucky to live in one of the most picturesque places around. Our beautiful coastline is second to none, we have the Tomaree National Park and the worldfamous Worimi Conservation Lands on our doorstep, and we are surrounded by the unique flora and fauna that also call this place home. This week, I had the pleasure of officially breaking ground on the Koala Sanctuary Port Stephens at Treescape, One Mile. This world-class facility will soon be home to many future generations of koalas here in Port Stephens. It will be a place for scientific research, a place for tourism and a place where our local volunteers will care for sick and injured koalas. Port Stephens is proud to be home to koalas. We have one of the last remaining koala populations on the east coast, so it’s our responsibility to protect them. Koala Sanctuary is our way of ensuring koalas are around for many years to come. Beyond this, what makes Koala Sanctuary so unique is the vision for this as a tourism destination. People from all over the world will soon be able to come and learn about our unique koala population. Port Stephens continues to grow in popularity and Koala Sanctuary is a key part of our strategy to encourage more visitors to our beautiful region. More visitors means more jobs for locals and more money invested in our economy. There is much work still to do, but I’m excited that Port Stephens will soon be home to a unique Koala Sanctuary that will help to ensure the future of our local koala population. For more information, visit portstephens.nsw.gov. au/koalas

Burn N Carrot
BURN N Carrot is made up of two musicians based in the Hunter Valley town of Muswellbrook. Craig “Burnout” Daniel is a drummer who has been playing in Rock Bands for the past 25 years, and Darryl “Carrot” Bowen is an acoustic guitarist and vocalist who has been doing solo gigs around the Hunter Valley since 2010. They came together to join a dynamic duo in 2014 after recording a couple of successful originals with their band Carrot Bowen & The Collective. With Burnout on his electronic drum kit and backing vocals and Carrot playing his acoustic guitar
along with his vocals, the duo has built up quite a following with their covers of songs that range from old classics, country rock to modern day pop songs, giving all the songs their own little spin. They have a number of songs in their repertoire that can cater for all types of crowds. From easy listening to upbeat song to have you dance the night away. They do pubs, clubs and private functions. You will not leave disappointed from a Burn N Carrot show. Burn N Carrot playing Anna Bay Tavern Friday 6 September.
