100th Blood Donation MEDOWIE resident Darren McKimm donated at the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood for the 100th time last week. Darren, who donated for the first time back in 1995, told News Of The Area, “I really enjoy going and knowing that I’m helping people whose health isn’t as good as mine.” “I’ve seen firsthand how important blood donors are for people with serious medical conditions.” Over the past 25 years of donating Darren has donated

platelets, plasma and whole blood. He said, “The first time I went I was a bit apprehensive, but once I got started I was fine”. “The snacks and milkshakes at the end are a bonus and all the staff are friendly.” Blood donations can be given every 12 weeks, however the red blood cells only last 42 days in the blood bank. Blood is surprisingly versatile and can be made into 22 different medical treatments from cancer

and blood diseases, various surgeries and trauma to obstetrics. Donations take between 15 to 45 minutes and there are numerous locations around the Port Stephens and Hunter areas you can donate, either in their offices or mobile Lifeblood vans.. They are always searching for new donors or old donors who haven’t donated for a while and can be contacted on 131495 for an appointment time or if you have any questions about donating.

Australia Day for the Port By Marian SAMPSON THE Bay turned on a magnificent day to celebrate Australia Day this year. Even the local wildlife turned out with a joey koala spotted high in the trees at Fly Point where the celebrations were held and a baby dolphin was spotted on the sail past from Moonshadow TQC Cruises vessel where local kids cruised free. The parade through the streets was hailed as a success with participants including everything from classic and vintage cars to our local white whale. Dancers performed from the Robyn Yvette School of Dance and JD’s Magic kept the kids intrigued. However, for many Australia Day is about the day they became Australians, this is true for both of my parents and there will be many others living locally who are either naturalised Australians or first generation Australians. This year the Port saw 28

newly naturalised Australian citizens commit to our nation which traces its rich and diverse heritage back over 40,000 years. Local service organisations took the opportunity to raise much needed funds with the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay running a BBQ and Port Stephens Koalas were also selling merchandise.

The local woodworkers raffle to win a stunning rocking horse was also drawn at the end of the day. Helen Ryan has sat on the organising committee for the Australia Day celebrations in the Bay for over 20 years which in itself is quite an achievement. She told News Of The Area, “It was just one of those perfect days, hot with a beautiful breeze and great enthusiasm, the

Kindergarten Kids ready to go FROM Page 1

memorable to both parent and child is the first day of school. For the Kindergarten kids of 2020 that is happening this week. A group of excited children gathered, shining brightly in their new uniforms, shoes, and with a few nervous smiles to speak with News Of The Area about their new adventure. Wirreanda Public School’s newest students shared what they are looking forward to in starting Kindergarten. Sophie Campbell said, “I am looking forward to going to the canteen to buy chocolate milk and ice blocks.” Oldest brother in his family, Christopher Nikfarjarm said, “I am looking forward to making friends and building a megaphone.” Isaac Phillips whose big brother will be starting Year 3 said, “I am looking forward to meeting new friends.” Best friends Lottie Slattery, Zoe Bevear, and Violet Davison are starting at Medowie Public School together.

Holding hands, they spoke to News Of The Area about their excitement to start Kindergarten. Lottie said she is looking forward to “Doing art and playing with my friends.” Zoe said, “Making new friends and learning new things and reading.” Violet is looking forward to “Making new friends and doing Maths.” While these children are looking forward to starting school, it is normal to have a wide range of feelings on the first day of school. There may be feelings of happiness, excitement, anxiousness, calmness, sadness with those emotions changing throughout the day. Both the children and the parents may have these feelings, however positive they are towards school in general. Ways to help children be ready to start school include telling positive stories about school; getting the child ready early with their school uniform, school bag and

For parents, the age old question “What did you do at school today?” which invariably gets answered with “nothing” from those who are not in Kindergarten

can be replaced with a more specific “Who did you play with at lunch time?” or “What did you learn in literacy?” For parents with children who have more difficulty opening up about their day, a more general conversation about what the parent did during the day can help to open and maintain lines of communication.

Salt Ash Air Weapons Range to conduct training for fighter jet aircrew RAAF Base Williamtown Hawk 127 LeadIn Fighter aircraft return to the Salt Ash Air Weapons Range (SAAWR) to conduct training for fighter jet aircrew from Monday, 3 February 2020. THE Hawks from Number 76 Squadron have scheduled four weeks of aircraft operations on the range, concluding Friday, 6 March. Number 77 Squadron F/A-18A/B Hornet aircrew will conduct training on the range between Wed-Fri, 11-13 March. Commander Air Combat Group, Air Commodore Tim Alsop, said residents living in East Medowie, Salt Ash

and Lemon Tree Passage can expect the range to be used consistently throughout this period. “Aircrew always minimise their use of the range, and once proficiency has been attained they move on to the next stage of their course,” Air Commodore Alsop said. “Air Force has a responsibility to ensure personnel are ready and able to deploy at short notice, and this involves necessary air to ground training conducted at SAAWR.

“Every effort is made to minimise inconvenience to residents during training and advised the range schedule could.” Operations are scheduled on weekdays only and are subject to change at short notice due to weather or operational considerations. Further information are invited to call 1800 033 200, or refer to www.airforce.gov.au/ operations/flyingoperations.

Rogue Wave for Port Stephens Crew By Marian SAMPSON

IT hasn’t been the start to 2020 that we hoped for — with the bushfire emergency affecting large parts of our country and drought conditions continuing, it really has been heartbreaking. While we have been lucky in Port Stephens, our community knows first-hand the devastating effect fires can bring on people, property and wildlife. That’s why we stand together with our fellow communities through this devastating crisis to show our support. One of the most useful ways to help services like charities, fire brigades and animal rescue is monetary donations. If you haven’t already and you’re in a position to donate, I would encourage you to give what you can to help the first responders and victims of these terrible fires. You can find a list of charitable organisations providing much-needed assistance at portstephens.nsw.gov.au While these dry conditions continue, it’s also important to make sure we all do our bit to save water for our future supply. There are many simple things you can do around your home, like taking a 4 minute shower or waiting until you have a full load to do the washing. Council has also been working with Hunter Water on a Drought Response Plan which outlines how we’ll reduce our water usage. I’m pleased to say we’re already implementing many of these changes but we’ve had to make some tough decisions which will mean some areas will no longer be watered. We’re also investigating the use of recycled or untreated water, extending our use of bore water and upgrading our facilities to save water. Remember, it’s up to all of us to love water and save a little more. By Port Stephens Mayor, Ryan Palmer

q Rogue Wave’s Crew. Darrell Barnett told News Of The Area, “We wanted to do our bit to get behind this compassionate crew as they made preparations for a mammoth undertaking for a great cause.” A true highlight that the crew will never forget is the reception the tired and elated

crew encountered as they crossed the finish line. They were cheered into constitution dock in Hobart by tens of thousands of spectators, all screaming and yelling within 15 metres of the boat as it sailed past, even the crews of the faster boats celebrating out on the harbour.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer first column for 2020

THE Rolex Sydney to Hobart Challenge is Australia’s most iconic and well known yacht race. One crew prepared their assault on the Sydney to Hobart right here in Port Stephens basing themselves out of Soldiers Point Marina. Decorated local Air Force officer Kevin Le Poidevin rallied together a crew of ‘old rogues’ to take on the Sydney to Hobart, with Soldiers Point Marina donating a berth to take the pressure off the preparations. This week, the crew returned triumphant, having battled through gruelling weather conditions to make a highly emotional finish in their bid to raise awareness for Soldier On and White Ribbon charities. This year’s 75th Sydney to Hobart was a first for both Kevin and his boat, Rogue Wave. For his ‘crew of old rogues’, comprised of enthusiastic Air Force officers and Port Stephens Yacht Club members. Through their participation they raised awareness for causes close to their hearts. Their secret weapon came in the form of accomplished Polish sailor Ms Asia Pajkowska who has completed a solo, unassisted circumnavigation. “The sail was intense,” Kevin says. “Ours was one of the slowest handicap boats in the fleet. “At one stage when I looked at the tracker we had made it to 43 rd on the ranking and I felt, wow, we’re doing ok. “But we were among the last 10 yachts to be hit by a couple of wild southerly fronts,” he said. Even for professionals, training for any race is challenging. With crew members scattered from Adelaide to Newcastle and Poland, only being able to get a few crew members together at a time added another dimension of difficulty. “Going back and forth from my mooring to get people on and off the boat was eating into any training time that we could find together,” Kevin said. “So it made the world of difference to our preparation when Soldiers Point Marina generously made a berth available to us. It was their busiest time of year but they really looked after us and were very encouraging.” Soldiers Point Marina Manager

Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda, How am I going to get my teenagers to abide by the new 4 minute shower restrictions?

COMMERCIAL CONVERSION

Mrs OP, Anna Bay Dear Mrs OP, IT is a strange transition from the pre-teen years, when our children have to be forced to follow basic hygiene principles, to when they become teenagers and showers turn into a totally new past-time. Suddenly your kids start locking the door and taking music into the bathroom and you’ll be lucky to see them for a couple of hours. I’m not sure what takes place during these teen beauty rituals but the aftermath is a flooded floor, three towels on the ground, the remnants of lotions and potions all over the mirrors, shower screens and tiles and various other calamities. It is not just fires that can create their own weather systems. Entering the bathroom after a teenager is like witnessing the aftermath of a tsunami. I do, however, have some great ideas on how to get them to keep to the four-minute timeframe. 1. Try an egg-timer. 2. Tell them that you will dock them $10 for every minute they go over the 4-minute mark. 3. Remove the door lock and threaten to drag them out if they can’t follow the rules. 4. Install one of those water-saver shower nozzles. They are so unpleasant your teen won’t want to go beyond 4 minutes. 5. Suggest that if they can’t follow the new shower etiquette, you’ll all have to revert to taking turns sharing the bathwater. 6. Have the local plumber install an automatic cut-off switch These simple suggestions should work. Just don’t let them watch the news or they will start to question why there are water restrictions for residents when we are selling off our water supplies to the highest bidder. Mmmmm. They may just have a point.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Williamtown has today welcomed its first three Pilatus PC-21 Taking training to new heights.

AIR FORCE Number 4 Squadron based at RAAF Base Williamtown has today welcomed its first three Pilatus PC-21 aircraft to their new home. Regarded as ‘the world’s most advanced pilot training aircraft’, the PC-21’s arrival on Friday, 24 January, at 4SQN demonstrates the platform’s training versatility; with the aircraft being engaged and immersed in a different, but still highly significant training role. Commanding Officer Number 4 Squadron, Wing Commander Sean Jobson said the PC-21 replaces the recently retired PC-9/A and will contribute to vital squadron training activities. “The PC-21 will assist in preparing the next generation of Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs), supporting Forward Air Control and Air Surface Integration across a broad spectrum of operations,” Wing Commander Jobson said.

“4 Squadron has a joint service responsibility for guiding the training and development of JTACs. “The arrival of the new aircraft will ensure personnel have the opportunity to continue to execute kinetic effects in real time scenarios.” JTAC training includes the ability to plan, brief, control and report on aircraft to provide Close Air Support in the battlefield. “The PC-21 will ensure that 4 Squadron continues to deliver the highest standard of mission training so JTAC personnel are, and continue to remain, combat ready,” Wing Commander Jobson said. The first three 4 Squadron PC-21 aircraft ferried from RAAF Base East Sale in Victoria, with remaining 4 Squadron aircraft expected to arrive at RAAF Base Williamtown in February 2020.

“We Thank You for YOUR Support of the News Of The Area”

“I’m currently looking at a shop converted into a residence. I’ve fallen in love with it but an unsure whether a shopping strip home is a good buy. Any advice?”

THE conversion of former commercial premises into residential properties isn’t new. Banks, churches and corner stores for example have been popular – and highly sought-after – for many years. And this trend shows no signs of declining. Additionally, I’m seeing more diversity in the conversion process – small pubsand general retail outlets etc. As more tree-changers enter our small rural communities they often look to properties that might have a hint of the urban environment they’ve left behind by way of smaller blocks and a more centralized, convenient aspect, but with all the country towns they’re heading to. So, store conversions are a really good combination of characteristics that make for a lovely lifestyle. You get the low maintenance block; that forgotten loaf of bread is literally a stone’s throw away and after everything closes for the night, you have a lovely quiet street. Main street living in a country town is a world away from living on a metropolitan main street/shopping strip. You say you’ve fallen in love with the property. With the best of both worlds literally on your doorstep, I say go for it.

I hope this helps Denise

So naturally when the Nelson Bay Gropers Rugby Union Club heard about the need for rugby gear for the Barchando Girls Secondary School in Kenya they rallied for the cause. Throughout 2019 sets of jerseys and football boots were collected to be shipped at the end of the season through the clubs rugby connections in Sydney. Joel O’Loughlin from the Nelson Bay Gropers said that whilst the club donated kits and boots a lot of the work was done behind the scenes with affiliates of the club. “Ally Ingham was really the one that got all the gear together for her family friend Gift Otieno who travels to Kenya every year to support the school with its much needed sporting equipment,” said Mr O’Loughlin. “I believe the girls collected around three 80kg tubs of playing and training kit, and two 80kg tubs of rugby boots from around Nelson Bay.” The girls sevens squad, who are the 2015 Kenyan National Champions, were reportedly elated with the new gear and couldn’t wait to get on the paddock. “From all reports from Ally and Gift the girls were amped to get into their new kits,” said Mr O’Loughlin. “It felt like a small gesture but it’s great to see the positive impacts rugby can bring to people around the world.”
