students.” Drumming is known to provide supportive pathways into the world of music. Learning drumming rhythms provides students with an understanding of timing, tempo and timbre. This has been shown to provide beneficial foundations for learning other music instruments later in life. Drumming fosters social inclusion skills: including leadership, listening skills,

Hens Shed has Hatched
By Marian SAMPSON
WE’VE all heard of a Men’s Shed and know about the positive health impacts for men involved in the movement. Now Raymond Terrace’s community is starting a new trend for women, with a Hen’s Shed. Business Networking for Chamber
By Marian SAMPSON
LOCAL businesses on the Tomaree Peninsula descended on Horizons Golf Resort for another successful Bay Business Breakfast. Leah Anderson President of the Tomaree Business Chamber told News Of The Area, “The Tomaree Business Chamber held another very successful quarterly business breakfast at Horizons on Thursday morning.” Horizons Golf Resorts Selva Saverimuttu updated the community on the opportunities which the FootGolf Asia Cup would bring to the area and invited guests to register to attend the Latitude One Real Futures Foundation Charity Golf Day in October this year. At the event members and guests heard an update from Mayor Ryan Palmer on some key projects being delivered across all 3 Port Stephens wards. This included the release of some funds which had been allocated to projects that were to be funded by the SRV. “Our breakfast sponsor Kathy Rimmer from Ying Yang Consultancy organised a very motivational guest speaker Brian Moran to talk about business ethics and culture. “Our members enjoyed the wonderful opportunity to network which is our main priority; and we announced another 12 new members to bring us to a membership of 215 and growing.” The event heralded a strong

Wow, that sounds very unnerving. You must have been suffering, sitting up there in the stalls, surrounded by the merry sounds of people enjoying themselves, and you, humourless as Donald Trump watching Saturday Night Live. How hideous.
There are many different sorts of humour, so perhaps this performance just didn’t tap into your niche. Some people find videos of kids injuring themselves absolutely hilarious. Australia’s Funniest Home Videos was full of youngsters being body slammed by a pet or thwacked by a swing replete with raucous canned laughter. It’s just not everyone’s idea of funny. Slapstick humour and double entendre was the domain of comedians like Benny Hill. He also spent a lot of time tapping a little bald guy on the head. Funny? To some, yes. Self-deprecating humour is always a hit with Aussies because we have made putting ourselves down a national pastime. Done effectively, it can be brilliant. Bodily humour is a hit with teenage boys but thankfully most of them grow out of it. Dad jokes are a special market and we make allowances for our dads. This sort of joke is often followed by groaning and eye rolling, but we love dad jokes just the same because when your dad is trying to be funny, you’ve just got to go along for the ride. It’s an unwritten rule. Then there’s sarcasm, which is also referred to as the lowest form of wit. It can be a bit cruel, but damn funny too. Surreal humour? Monty Python is an example. I’d suggest world politics is another. Or maybe that’s dark humour. So, in finishing Mrs KP, I’ll share an internet joke with you: A man walks into a zoo. The only animal is a dog. It was a Shitzu. Did you like it? I thought it was pretty cute. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

THE Rotary Club of Salamander Bay celebrated their successes for the year at their annual change-over dinner. The dinner celebrated many achievements for the club including attaining a community building grant through Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, which will be used to improve George Reserve. Outgoing President Ina George told News Of The Area, “We are working with Council to install a new undercover picnic table area in the park.” The Club is active in the community and provided several organisations with cheques to continue their good works.
