Food Drive For Thought IN times of crisis the Port Stephens community has a real knack of rallying the best of humanity together to aid those who need it the most. This new COVID world has further highlighted where in the region extra care is required, and it’s also unified services under one umbrella to proactively engage with those issues raised. The Tomaree Interagency COVID-19 Response Team (TICRT) has been formed out of necessity by the Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre, Yacaaba Centre, Vinnies, Salvos, Hope Cottage, Gan Gan Family Centre, APM Employment Services, Hume Home Services and Port Stephens Council. The TICRT is now calling on the wider community to aid them in their food drive being held on Saturday, 13 June from 10am to 2pm at the All Saints Church in Nelson Bay.

Tomaree Interagency COVID-19 Response Team Hold Food Drive For Port Stephens Charity Services FROM Page 1 Dorothy Thom, spokesperson for the TICRT said that participants will be able to simply drivethru to donate their nonperishable food goods. “This food drive is contactless with cars driving through the All Saints Anglican Church car park,” said Mrs Thom. “Our friendly volunteers will collect the donations from the donor’s boots and in return will give out thank you cards and learning material for their children.” As Public Health Orders came into affect the work of Port Stephens charities were needed more than ever and Mrs Thom said

all the community services immediately rallied to the cause. “One of the positive things to emerge from the lockdown measures has been the tangible passion, proactiveness and united front amongst the Tomaree Interagency services,” she said. “One of the immediate needs that has become evident is the low food stocks of those services that provide food to those within our community facing crisis. “That’s why this food drive is planned.” Donation receptacles have also been placed in local supermarkets across the Tomaree Peninsula for the food drive. Give generously and give often if you can.

NSW and Regional Areas are open for Holiday Makers FROM Page 1 Pubs and Club restrictions have also been lifted to 50 seated guests. Relaxed travel restrictions on top of the June 8 Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday in NSW will undoubtedly see tourists flood into the Bay once again. As we get ready to ramp up and allow these tourists to support our local economy there are things that we can do to keep ourselves and our vulnerable residents safe. Leah Anderson, President of the Tomaree Business Chamber is cautiously welcoming the lifting of travel restrictions and knows the visitation will be great for businesses. Anderson told News Of The Area, “Well it is a good start and it needs to be managed. We have fine lines, we have a community that is incredibly vulnerable, and some of our community

members will be quite scared about people coming. “At the same time we have businesses that are going broke, have closed their doors, or who are just holding on, who are dying for things to open back up again.” She believes that we all need to play our part to keep everyone safe and that means more than just social distancing. For some of us it might mean helping the vulnerable to shop online, or to do their shopping for them. “For others, particularly our older residents it might mean that they need to plan to be at the shops when it isn’t as busy so shopping mid week rather than on the weekends, going into town for a coffee earlier in the day before it gets busy and making restaurant reservations.” Anderson is asking locals to think about shopping a

If we can manage the times when we access the shops it will certainly help our local businesses, our retail workers while helping us ease into the changes. She is also keen to see more on street dining

options available throughout all our townships and for businesses to offer diners set times for meals allowing businesses to conduct multiple seatings for each meal. We are all in this together. If we plan ahead we will see positive impacts on the local economy and local jobs while managing to stay COVID-19 safe.

Probus Members Get Together Apart

By Marian SAMPSON

THE closure of activities for Fingal Bay Probus Club since the end of March could have frustrated members who enjoy the fun and friendship they provide. Many members kept in touch with phone calls, emails and, ever mindful of social spacing when walking locally or buying essentials. President Jenny Wright was very active contacting everyone weekly to make sure all was well. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “Once isolation rules slackened a bit, wine and dine organisers John and Vicki Archer arranged a “meeting” to be held in individual homes, with contact via Zoom and inspired catering by Authentic Thai. “Members made menu choices and ordered in advance, with Authentic Thai

Clubs Open Up The Doors By Marian SAMPSON

CLUBS are in the latest group of businesses re-opening this week. Around Port Stephens Clubs are getting their doors open welcoming their members back, however guests will need to check with each establishment to see if they will be welcome.| Armed with sanitiser, collecting contact details and managing numbers in each area of the venues the Clubs will each have their own policies and procedures for visitors to follow. Nelson Bay Bowling Club, Soldiers Point Bowling Club, Karuah & District RSL Club, Wests Nelson Bay, Nelson Bay Golf Club, Stockton Bowling Club, Stockton RSL and Raymond Terrace Bowling Club all opened to trade on 1 June. Fingal Bay Sports Club reopened on Wednesday this week, Club Lemon Tree opens on Thursday. Contact the Club for more on how you can get back on the bowling greens with rinks opening up to limited play with social distancing on the greens. Clubs are set to operate with 50 people allowed under COVID-19 in each area – this means even large Clubs like Soldiers Point Bowling Club is limited to 150 patrons under current COVID-19 restrictions. Gaming machines will also be open with social distancing. There are concerns that reopening gaming areas may see a relapse of gambling which families can ill afford. Anyone that is having a problem with gambling should contact Gambling Help NSW. You can call anytime, to access a free and confidential service on 1800 858 858. The reopening of Clubs will see a huge increase in employment and the reduction in under-employment within the region’s tourism and hospitality sector. Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “Every person, every family and every business has been impacted by the coronavirus crisis. “The tourist industry and its workers have been particularly hurt by the Public Health Orders and the restrictions we’ve had to abide by to keep communities safe.” The reopening of Clubs signals just how well Australia has managed to navigate through the pandemic to date and given continued attention to social distancing and hygiene, hopefully we will reopen with the curve flattened. We are all in this together and now we can be in it together in our Clubs.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@ newsofthearea.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.

Dear Jasminda,

SUB-DIVISION “I live in Raymond Terrace. My home is built on a level corner block of a 1550sqm block leaving me with an enormous garden to maintain. I’m thinking of subdividing. Is this a good time or should I wait until the market is stronger?” IT sounds like you have an exciting prospect and one that you will be able to profit from. I’m assuming you’ve been to Council to confirm that subdivision is permitted, and that being the case, you’ve also secured quotes on the infrastructure required such as driveway crossover, sewage etc. So, with all that in mind and should the numbers fall in a manner that you can work with, then your Raymond Terrace location is very much in your favour. The area is growing dramatically and a level, residential block in a desirable location will hold enormous buyer appeal. Again, working on the basis that you’re possibly able to divide the block in two fairly equal halves, you’ll be offering a good sized, low maintenance block which will also tick the box for buyers. You’ll be able to maintain a block that better suits your needs – and you’ll still have a garden! We currently have a number of buyers seeking blocks such as yours. If you would like an obligation-free market appraisal, contact our Raymond Terrace team of local experts. With R&R, you’ll be in a safe pair of hands.

Eyesore No More

By Marian SAMPSON IT’s been a long time coming and the paint is still wet on the new car park at Donald Street in the Nelson Bay town centre. The car park effectively removes a redundant eyesore and gives a functional solution to the business precinct. The Tomaree Business Chamber originally lobbied to have the old structure which had concrete cancer torn down and the new car park delivered. Parking is extremely important in the CBD and each space equates to dollars spent in the town’s retail outlets. While Chamber is excited to see the site as a quality and safe site for parking the long term vision is to see the land activated with potential

parking, a trading precinct and possibly with additional residential units on higher stories. Chamber President Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “We originally went to Council Public Access about a year ago - our first intention was to get rid of the eyesore and at that time we were keen to see Council develop the site potentially with an education precinct.” The TAFE is now going ahead at the Salamander Bay site adjacent to the shopping centre. “The TAFE will now be within walking distance from the schools and it is a central location which is a good outcome.” “This leaves us with a prime site for future development in Nelson Bay CBD but in the interim we now have some good quality

car parking, allowing us to come in a shop locally.” She believes that the car park will be used in conjunction with the site on the corner of Donald and Yacabba Streets, and the Donald Street West car park which Council previously extended through to Victoria Parade. “Council also has plans to develop more parking on the old Caltex site on Stocktons Street,” she said. These combined car parks will see the retailers and their staff able to park close to work and shoppers have easy access to the local businesses that it is so important to support. Anderson is encouraging everyone to step out and shop local, buy in the small businesses that are doing it tough and to support our local economy.

My daughter-in-law has given me three framed prints of her and my son in professional maternity portraits. In them, she is eight months pregnant. They are both more or less naked apart from a strategically placed sheet. What on earth do I do with them? Mrs HL, Medowie

Dear Mrs HL, Wow, how times have changed. Isn’t it enough to have one photo of the mother-to-be wistfully patting her stomach with a Mona Lisa smile that hides what she is really thinking at the eight-month point which is ‘get this alien out of me’. No, not anymore, because along came Demi Moore with her blooming body on the front of Vanity Fair, and ever since, women have felt the need to go down the pregnancy portraiture path. Over the years these photos have morphed into what could only be described as pregnancy porn where couples cavort in milk baths, ride naked on Clydesdales, crouch in rock pools wearing nothing more than strategically placed starfish, or recline on cowhide rugs with bits of vine wrapped around their genitals. The photos may meet the artistic proclivities of the photographer, but do they belong on a wall? I mean, we all know how they got pregnant. Do we need evidence? I have no idea what you’re supposed to do with these portraits, but I suggest you repay the favour. You and your husband could pose for some artistic shots wearing nothing but g-strings, your bodies painted with images representing your hopes for your grandchild’s future. Frame them in time for Christmas. If your daughter-in-law is as progressive as she sounds, I’m sure she’ll have no problem hanging them in her lounge room. What a conversation piece when baby-to-be learns to talk.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

He often captivated friends with stories from his past: the poor boy from Wales who was bombed out (twice) during the blitz; his service in The Home Guard and the RAF; working as a printer for the media moguls; his migration to Australia; his Awards for rifle shooting; the gold prospecting and roughing it in the outback; and lots more. Later in life, Bryan suffered from failing health, moving to Sydney to be cared for by his daughters. He did however return several times but sensing that the end was near said on his last visit to the area, “This will be my last time.” He was right. Rest in Peace Mr English.

History of the Tank Traps RSL Tank Traps

THE recent East Coast Low weather pattern has caused severe erosion along beaches up and down the coast and even exposed a relic of WWII along Stockton Beach. This was a defensive barrier put there to impede an expected invasion. Thousands of these concrete structures were placed along beaches deemed to be possible invasion points and Port Stephens itself was protected by large naval guns, machine gun pillboxes and torpedo tubes. Rather than trek over the sand dunes to see the tank traps, the community can pull up on the main road at the Tilligerry RSL Club: they have some on display.

They are tucked in behind the knoll where another relic of the war is on display. This is a Bofors Gun, arguably the most effective anti-aircraft defensive weapon of its time. These reminders of

a time long gone were salvaged by members of the RSL Sub Branch and put on display for all to see. Other personal mementos are kept in glass cases inside the Clubhouse itself.

q Numbered and dated tank traps at the Tilligerry RSL.

WHILE our community has collectively held its breath the last few months — we can all breathe a little easier now, knowing the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be over. Our local tourism and business communities, along with workers, have all been impacted by COVID-19’s widespread effects and can now focus on repairing. I look forward to welcoming back visitors safely to Port Stephens to help reinvigorate our local economy and to see the doors of our local businesses open again. During this time, I encourage you to shop local wherever possible to support those businesses who are doing it tough. While the easing of restrictions is a positive for us all, it’s also a reminder to remain vigilant and abide by the COVIDsafe guidelines. Although life might seem as though it’s returning to normal with our boat ramps, parks and amenities reopening, we still need to take the necessary precautions to keep ourselves and each other safe. As we’re still responding to the effects of COVID-19, Council remains focused on the road ahead and restarting Port Stephens. To help us do that, we’re asking residents to have their say on Council’s performance and community issues by taking part in the 2020 Community Satisfaction Survey. Our community plays a key role in restarting Port Stephens, so I ask all residents to take part and have your say to help shape the path ahead. The survey is open until 5pm Friday 19 June 2020 with results proposed to be published on Council’s website in August. To complete the survey, visit portstephens.nsw.gov.au/communitysatisfaction-survey or contact Council on 4988 0255 to learn about alternative ways to take part.

Flying Start For Hub

By Marian SAMPSON

BAE Systems at Williamtown was the site where the NSW Government made a commitment to the future of Port Stephens. The Deputy Premier John Barilaro announced the fifth Special Activation Precinct in NSW to be established in Williamtown, bringing the total investment for Special Activation Precincts to $1 billion, attracting new investment and creating thousands of new jobs. Deputy Premier John Barilaro told News Of The Area, “Regional NSW is the backbone of our economy which is why the NSW Government is committed to establishing this new Special Activation Precinct which will be a massive boost for regional industry and play a big part in stimulating the local economy in Port Stephens and surrounds. “During these unprecedented times, nothing is more important than job security, so the new Precinct announced by the NSW Liberals and Nationals will be terrific news for the people of Port Stephens.” The Special Activation Precincts are about making it easier and more attractive for businesses to set up in regional NSW, create more jobs, and grow regional engine industries such as freight and logistics, renewable energy,

advanced manufacturing, agribusiness, tourism, hospitality and defence. “We estimate that these precincts will create at least 15,000 jobs across the regions, but we expect that number to climb. The Williamtown precinct joins other hubs at Parkes, Wagga Wagga, Moree and the Snowy Mountains, creating a network of world-class hubs fueling regional economies for decades to come.” It is anticipated that the Williamtown Special Activation Precinct will turbocharge the region’s growth as a National and International defence and aerospace hub. The NSW Government will also explore 10,000 hectares around the Port Stephens local Government area, including Newcastle Airport and surrounds, and will build on the Government’s existing $11.79 million investment into the Astra Aerolab precinct through the Growing Local Economies Fund. “Special Activation Precincts are masterplanned precincts that will offer investors benefits such as streamlined planning approvals, Government led infrastructure and studies, and a business concierge service,” Mr Barilaro said. The Deputy Premier also announced a $5 million commitment from the Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund

q Deputy Premier John Barilaro and Port Stephens Councillor Chris Doohan are ready to see the Aerospace Precinct take off at BAE Systems, Williamtown. for master planning and business case work for the Williamtown precinct, which will begin soon and involve extensive consultation with the community, local councils, businesses and industries. This investment comes from the $4.2 billion Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund which is dedicated to delivering transformative infrastructure projects that will benefit regional NSW for generations to come.

Essential services that businesses need to operate will be provided by the NSW Government and may include roads and utilities such as water, electricity, stormwater, waste management and digital connectivity. The project could spur upgrades to Newcastle Airport’s runway and terminal, the M1’s extension to Raymond Terrace and new road links to the airport and Port of Newcastle.

The 76-hectare site adjoining the airport and Williamtown RAAF Base, home to Australia’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter fleet, will become the country’s preeminent space for aviation, defence and aerospace-related manufacturing, maintenance, research and education. Paralleling the twin aerospace developments will be passenger growth at Newcastle Airport, with a minimum 2.6 million-

passenger throughout expected by 2036. The anticipated growth and expansion of passenger flights will be supported by improved public transport between the airport and city centre, as well as runway surface and freight-handling capacity upgrades. New employment opportunities will also arise from domestic and defence aircraft maintenance.

LIKE many community organisations group activities are high on the list of what scouting is normally all about. In the face of COVID-19 Scouts like other organisations have turned to technology to learn and grow together whilst being apart. The 1st Nelson Bay Sea Scouts have been holding weekly video chats with each section for about 1 hour. Despite social distancing the Scouts are getting on with a range of activities. When isolation is over these Scouts will be prepared ready to tie knots, and pitch their tents with expertise. Sandra Radford, Cub Scout Leader of the 1st Nelson Bay Sea Scouts, Scouts NSW told News Of The Area, “We are participating in various activities like construction challenges, cooking, fire lighting, camp fires, fort building, knots practice, hike prep, and lots more!” The Nelson Bay Sea Scouts are still earning Achievement Badges while in isolation. The Scout Troupe also participated in ANZAC Day

One Mile Open WITH the latest easing of NSW Government COVID-19 restrictions, One Mile Beach will reinstate flagged lifeguard operations from Monday 1 June 2020 and throughout the winter period until Friday 25 September 2020. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer welcomes the easing of restrictions, however reminds the community to remain vigilant and abide by the COVIDSafe Guidelines. “We know how important it is to get outdoors and enjoy all that

Port Stephens has to offer — but it’s important to ensure we still take the necessary precautions,” he said. Swimmers and visitors can swim between the flags but must continue to follow NSW Public Health Orders to not gather in groups of more than 10 and maintain physical distancing. The Australian Lifeguard Service will operate 7 days a week at One Mile Beach from 9am to 4pm from 1 June to 25 September 2020. The official season will commence on 26 September 2020.

care provided through GPs and Community Health Practitioners, structured multidisciplinary team care, and provides care across the spectrum, from prevention through to continuing care. It was a truly COVID-19 socially distant opening with a simple statement made by Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack stating that construction of the Tomaree HealthOne facility is now complete, with Graph Building officially handing over the building to Hunter New England Health.

Tomaree Community HealthOne Open IT’S been a long time coming but the new Tomaree Community Hospital and HealthOne Facility is now complete. The project is one of the most significant investments in community health in the region in many years. There was no pomp, no ceremony, and no ribbon cutting to mark the occasion; just medical personnel getting on with the job at hand. Key features of the new hospital include integrated

The new facility will be known as the Tomaree Community Hospital and Health Centre, and forms part of the NSW Government’s $100 million investment in 20 HealthOne projects across the State. “Construction of the Tomaree HealthOne Facility commenced in late 2018 and aims to create a stronger and more efficient primary health care system that allows General Practitioners to work with community health providers and other health professionals in

The HealthOne Centre delivers services tailored to residents of the Tomaree Peninsula including a general practice, expanded medical imaging, community allied health, pathology and dental. The GP service will take the heat off the emergency department particularly in busy times with triage staff able to direct patients to the most appropriate service.. “The new hospital now has one entrance and one

reception for all health services delivered on site, making it easier for people to navigate, and will service the community with the added benefit of being directly connected with the hospital, providing patients with an integrated health care experience,” she said. Ms Cusack went on to thank the local community for their patience during construction and especially thank the nurses, doctors and other hospital staff for their invaluable input into the

project. While a big change for local services, the new Tomaree Community Hospital and Health Centre will still see patients ferried to The Mater and John Hunter Hospitals in Newcastle for specialist care. The HealthOne model is designed to improve the patient experience by providing care outside the hospital system, reducing wait times for specialist care, and helps to reduce avoidable stays in hospital.

o the Return to Play COVID-19 Environment’ and the ‘National Principles for the Resumption of Sport and Recreation Activities’,” Mr Wilson told News Of The Area. The Club will have to comply with the ‘Roadmap to a COVIDSafe Australia’, which places limits on the type of activity that can be conducted and the number of people who can gather at facilities: Level A: Training/playing in no more than pairs. Physical distancing required. Level B: Indoor/outdoor activity, training/playing in small groups up to 10. Physical distancing required. • Step 1: No indoor

activity. Outdoor sport (up to 10 people) consistent with AIS Framework • Step 2: Indoor/ outdoor sport up to 20 people. Physical distancing (density 4m2). Level C: Full sporting activity (training and competition) allowed. No restriction on numbers. Contact allowed. • Step 3: Venues allowed to operate with up to 100 people with physical distancing. Community sport expansion to be considered consistent with AIS Framework. Mr wilson said “The

roadmap requires that significantly enhanced risk mitigation (including avoidance and physical distancing) must be applied to all indoor activities associated with outdoor sporting codes (e.g. club rooms, training facilities, gymnasia and the like).” The Club currently have Council permission to operate at Level A and will be seeking further permission to move to Level B Stage 1 in the near future.

New People Mover for Botanic Gardens

q HHRBG CEO Robert Beautement, Parliamentary Secretary Cusack, and HRBG volunteers. ON Monday, Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack joined Mayor of Port Stephens Ryan Palmer and volunteers at the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens to welcome a brand new people mover thanks to $17,000 in NSW Government funding. Ms Cusack congratulated HRBG staff and more than 170 volunteers on their new addition, ahead of the Garden’s re-opening in a few weeks’ time.

“This people mover will enable visitors with mobility issues to tour the many beautiful themed gardens, giving everyone the opportunity to appreciate the incredible variety of flora and local wildlife,” said Ms Cusack. “The people mover will use new pathways partially funded by the NSW Government and built by volunteers over the past 4 years, and will further enhance the environmental education programs for

local schools and the wider community. HRBG Chairman Ken Page welcomed the funding and said the new vehicle, built by local manufacturer Varley Group would be a treasured asset of the Gardens. “The old vehicle struggled to make it back to base, so this new people mover will be a game changer for our gardens and I thank the NSW Government for providing the funding,” said Mr Page.

“Our research has shown that environmental education is vastly improved when visitors are able to experience the beauty and diversity of the gardens, firsthand.” Premier of NSW Gladys Berejiklian congratulated the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens and thanked the volunteers for their hard work in creating and maintaining the Gardens over the past 35 years. “At a time when social distancing is so important – a visit to the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens is a great way for everyone to get out into regional NSW and enjoy some of

the most beautiful flora and fauna our state has to offer,” Ms Berejiklian said. Mayor of Port Stephens Ryan Palmer welcomed the funding and said attracting visitors to the Hunter region has never been more important than it is now. “Thanks to the NSW Government, this new vehicle will allow more people to enjoy everything this beautiful part of Port Stephens has to offer,” said Mayor Palmer. The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens is situated on the Pacific Highway at Heatherbrae, on the Tomago sand beds in Port

Stephens. The outer gardens will now become more accessible, and includes a number of feature gardens and attractions, including the Gundabooka Aboriginal Plants Trail, the Rainforest Gardens, Rare and Endangered Plants, Plants of the Hunter Region and the Succulent Gardens. The Gardens are set to open in a few weeks’ time and visitors are encouraged to visit www. huntergardens.org.au or call (02) 4987 1655 prior to planning a visit.

The NHRU Cancels 2020 Season Amid unanimous in their view COVID-19 Concerns that the restricted return FROM Page 16

Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) have announced that the 2020 rugby premiership season will not go ahead but has left the door ajar for an interclub carnival closer to the year’s end. In a statement NHRU president Bill Clifton outlined the importance of keeping all those involved in the game safe during these unpredictable times. “There is only one thing we can say with certainty for the 2020 Newcastle and Hunter Rugby season and that is it will be a season like no

other,” said Mr Clifton. “While restrictions are changing every day, the uncertainty means the Newcastle and Hunter rugby premiership season won’t be going ahead.” For the Nelson Bay Gropers it means there’ll be no rugby on the Tomaree Peninsula for the foreseeable future. Gropers President Ray Milton said that rugby clubs in the NHRU generate most of their income from game days and with that restricted it would be impossible to continue. “All the club’s were

of community rugby in July simply could not work for a normal rugby season,” said Mr Milton. “No crowds, bars or canteens would bleed clubs of funds when they have had no income this year. “The NHRU is still keeping it’s options open for a really short 15-a-side season, or more likely, a series of gala days held around the zone.” The NHRU is expected to make an announcement in the coming weeks about virtual competitions and other alternatives for rugby players and supporters.
