Starlight Foundation Shines Bright With Port Support By Mitch LEES
WHEN a child becomes seriously ill the realities of the world can seem to push aside the fun, enjoyment and laughter of youth. This is where the Starlight Children’s Foundation steps in to ensure that kids that are facing some tough battles can still draw from the excitement of their childhood. As Starlight is a nonprofit organisation that encompasses a holistic approach to health across the physical, mental and social divides strong community support helps them deliver programs nationwide. It’s this support that the Trek 4 Kidz Rally aims to

eight-day Sapphires to Sands Trek in late August that crossed the landscapes from Gloucester out to Mudgee finishing in Tuncurry. The rally saw over 24 cars from across NSW take part and Mr Page, who is 85 years young this year, says the event is all about fun just like the great work of the Starlight Foundation. “It’s a great week of adventure
to raise much needed funds for Starlight to deliver on bringing some smiles to some very sick kids. “It’s all about enjoyment that hopefully can be shared to those battling in some gravely ill circumstances,” said Mr Page. The Trek 4 Kidz has been running for 23 years and so far has raised over $2.5 million for

Starlight with every cent going into their services. Mr Page says he’s got plenty more years of fundraising in the tank as he looks to the 2020 event that’ll kickoff at Inverell and finish in Goulburn. “I’m not going to stop till I drop,” said Mr Page. “I’ve also got to thank all our sponsors and donors who get behind us and ultimately these kids and families.” If you would like to continue the support for Starlight head to https:// starlight.org.au/donate/.

Student Scholarships Awarded By Marian SAMPSON
EVERY year the team at Soldiers Point Marina generously come to the party with scholarships for students which are awarded through the Real Futures Foundation. The scholarships are designed to make the financial costs of pursuing further education just a little bit easier. For the students it is heartening to find that business and the community are behind them in their efforts to succeed. Samantha Newell was awarded a new laptop she is currently in year 12 at Irrawang High School is going on to study a Bachelor of Sport Science at Newcastle University Ourimbah Campus. Amy Dimins from Irrawang High School will be pursuing a career in nursing, she has already completed an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) traineeship at the Mater Hospital her scholarship will be put towards uniforms and textbooks. Olivia Bisley of Irrawang High School will be moving on to undertake a Bachelor of Education & Bachelor of
Dance double degree, the scholarship will be invaluable in assisting with the cost of course fees and textbooks. Irrawang High School’s Christina D’Arcy is going to study a Bachelor of Criminal Justice at Port Macquarie

University and the Police Academy in Goulburn. Her scholarship will also go towards course fees. Tomaree High Schools Georgia Osborne-Zorbas is in year 11 studying a retail diploma at Newcastle TAFE, her scholarship will go
towards comfortable safety footwear. Darrell Barnett Manager of Soldiers Point Marina told News Of The Area, “It was a real pleasure to see the applications submitted for the Real Futures Foundation Soldiers Point Marina Scholarships this year.
“The scholarships were awarded to those who had a clear direction and a need. “For example, one of our scholarships is going towards safe and comfortable work boots for a student that is currently working in a kitchen. “Another was a laptop to assist with university studies. “In total we awarded five
scholarships to youth living in Port Stephens to assist them in their transition from school to employment. “We look forward to following these students on their journey,” he said. Applications generally open to students exiting school in November around March each year and are awarded on a merit-based system.

It caps off a successful year for the Studio, with one of the students being awarded a $500 senior tap scholarship at the Abermain Eisteddfod last month. The outstanding annual conference was held at St Philips Christian College at Waratah. Each group performed on the professional stage highlighting their talents in the genres of jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, contemporary, and acrobatics. Students as young as two strutted the stage wearing a dazzling array of costumes and local celebrity Miss Kim, who will also make an appearance at this week’s Medowie Christmas Carnival, hosted the event. Film Festival for budding Filmmakers
THE story of how a 30-year-old man became a C4 tetraplegic in Shoal Bay, a film documenting clashes over illegal whaling and workshops for budding filmmakers will feature as part of the Real Film Festival in Port Stephens on Thursday 5 December 2019. Bulletproof Ashley, a short film directed by Ramon Te Wake, tells the story of Ashley Treseder who suffered a lifechanging spinal cord injury after diving off a pier at Shoal Bay in January 2019.
q
Defend, Conserve, Protect tells the story of 3 distinct annual migrations in the cold and furious Southern Ocean — the illegal Japanese Commercial Whaling Fleet, the Sea Shepherd Anti-Whaling Fleet, and the whales. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says Council is proud to support the Festival. “For the eighth consecutive year, the Real Film Festival has been sharing real stories about real people. documentary film Festivals sharing the work of cutting-edge and creative storytellers,” Mayor Palmer said. “We know that it’s creatives who make better places and better spaces, which is why Port Stephens Council is proud to support the Real Film Festival.” “It’s amazing to have world-class events like this right here in our backyard. I’d encourage Port Stephens locals to make the most of this opportunity to learn about filmmaking and be immersed in these 2 very different but compelling stories.” For budding filmmakers, two workshops will also be held on the day showcasing how to film like a pro on your iPhone and a journey into the visual effects and virtual reality industry. to bring this calibre of industry to our own growing regional screen sector,” Ms Hubber said.

fire fuel. “I was elected to Port Stephens Council on a ‘burnoff’ platform and served on the local bushfire management committee along with two indigenous locals: John Ridgeway and Colleen Perry,” he said. “The committee refused to take a ruthless burnoff policy on board so we resigned in disgust.” “This was the time when the management plan
stated that ‘Port Stephens is an insignificant to major bushfire risk area’.” “Its recently been reclassified as one of the most fire prone areas in NSW,” he added. “I’d encourage residents to contact their local State member to lobby for full decision making to be once again given to our grassroots volunteers. We trust them to look after us,” he added.

News Of The Area Port Stephens Power Appoint Senior Women’s Coaches
media@newsofthearea.com.au
7 Day Makeover proves popular
FROM Page 16
SPORT
Anthony told News Of The Area, “I also hope to improve our fitness and skills all around, this will require a solid turnout and commitment for pre-season training.” The Port Stephens Power Women’s AFL team are coming into their third season since their inception in 2018. The 2019 season showed some promising signs of improvement and competitiveness. Over the summer break, players have been keeping fit by participating in touch football and weekly Park Runs. Whilst official pre-season training starts on 14 January for both senior and juniors, some keen players have started having a kick around in preparation. Club President, Mr Mark Edgar, told News Of The Area, “I am really happy to have them both back again for next season.” “They are both respected coaches and are very dedicated to our women’s team which is great. I am really looking forward to another great season.” The Club is always looking for new recruits, so any interested players should contact Senior Secretary Lauren on 0411 866 623.
IT’S the final countdown to a new-look Anna Bay with the much-anticipated 7 Day Makeover attracting more volunteer registrations than any other town in the program’s history. Creative Communities Director and internationally renowned placemaker David Engwicht said things are looking encouraging for Anna Bay. “Anna Bay is off to a flying start – we’ve had over 100 register for the planning workshop alone, which is hands-down the most we’ve ever seen,” Mr Engwicht siad. “The Council and the community has already raised $34,000, but we can still push the fundraising even harder in these last few days.” “Even if the money doesn’t get spent during the 7 days, all funds raised go back into Anna Bay, so we can always use more!”

Engwicht said. The Makeover kicked off lasts Saturday 30 November 2019 with a 2-day planning workshop at Anna Bay Tavern. The rubber then hit the road on Monday 2 December 2019, with the official launch on Saturday 7 December 2019. Everyone is welcome
to attend the planning workshop, facilitated by Engwicht. Participants in the 2-day workshop will select the spaces to be made over, generate ideas and form teams to deliver elements of the makeover. “We have spent 25 years perfecting techniques to help people think outside the box,” Mr Engwicht said.
“Even people who believe they don’t have a creative bone in their body suddenly find themselves generating fantastic ideas. It is a fun, hands-on process.” Makeover advocate and Central Ward Councillor, Sarah Smith, is calling on people from across Port Stephens to participate. “I have seen what other
TIDE CHART - 7 DAYS
towns have achieved in 7 days on very limited budgets, and I know we can do the same…or better! I urge the whole community to get involved,” Cr Smith said. “There are roles for absolutely everyone, even if you can’t swing a hammer. It’s all about working together for Anna Bay” she said.
