Dr Kong works for part of each year in remote communities in the area of reducing ear disease and hearing loss. He has previously said in an interview with the University of Newcastle, “When we work together with a community, we can address all the issues that arise from ear disease.” “Our job is to improve kids’ health so they can get the education they need.” Such is his personable nature that many of the school leaders flocked to him during the morning tea break and one primary school student leader reminded Dr Kong that he had operated on him in his capacity as an ENT surgeon.

Original Artwork Calls Koala Sanctuary Home

JORDAN Lucky is the first to admit he failed art at Tomaree High School, ironically he is a prolific and well established mural artist not just in Australia, but around the world. He has been a full time professional artist for four years and his first public artwork was a collaboration with the Soldiers Point Lions Club in 2008 at the now defunct bus shelter at Salamander Bay Shopping Centre. His career started trading artwork for accommodation, so Jordan has literally painted his way around the world. With installations in Malaysia’s Penang, Thailand, Netherlands, Sweden, London and across Europe. Closer to home he has works in Melbourne, Newcastle and now at the entry to the soon to be opened Koala Sanctuary Jordan’s works are worth stopping to enjoy. Jordan has over 200 works in the public domain around the world. The sign at the entry to the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary is unique in the area it embraces and reinvigorates the existing assets with the old wooden

The sign is a one off original artwork which sets the tone of the installation. Jordan Lucky told News Of The Area, “The base of the koala was laid in aerosols with the details in acrylic with brushwork.” Stay tuned as Jordan
would like to do a bigger version of this beautiful koala with its full body and a tree. The Koala Sanctuary can’t come too soon in the aftermath of the devastating bushfires in Australia with many koalas injured across the nation, some of which were cared for here in Port Stephens. Jordan is hopeful that the artwork on the fence will eventually grow and that there will be spaces within the
sanctuary which will see art become a part of the interactive and educational experience which the sanctuary promises for the future. Jordan also participated in the Naked Alley artwork with Rhys Fabris and Nick Stuart in Nelson Bay and is keen to deliver more works in his hometown. Next he is travelling to paint in Melbourne then in a Victorian town called Donald, then Brisbane and Byron Bay.

WHEN young Kaylee Hodgson was diagnosed with childhood leukaemia just over 12 months ago, little did she know what a huge impact she and her family would have on Amcal Chemist, Salamander Bay. This week, a month after being told her cancer is in remission, Amcal Chemist held a fundraiser for Red Kite in honour of two of their young customers who have recently been treated for cancer. This charity supports young people aged up to 24 and their families, when they are going through cancer care. From Amcal, owner pharmacist Mr Christian Hernandez and intern pharmacist Mr Liam Keating decided to not only have their heads shaved as is the tradition for cancer fundraisers, but they also waxed their legs with the help of New Leaf Cosmetic Clinic. They were both very q Kaylee ( (8 years in Year 4 at Soldiers Point brave throughout the ordeal School) starts off shaving Christian Hernandez’s hair. and Allan’s Men’s Hairdresser assisted with the head shave. At the event, Mr Hernandez told customers and other well wishers, “We met the Hodgson’s a year and a half ago.” “Kaylee is a special human and unfortunately she had a diagnosis of cancer.” “A journey that was scary and we felt helpless.” “It’s heart wrenching and we felt we had to do something.” “We could do something by raising money and awareness to support Kaylee’s journey.: “With the support of local businesses,

THE 7 Day Makeover is far from over for Anna Bay with money still in the kitty and work to be done. Tomaree Business Chamber President Leah Anderson has strong ideas on what needs to happen next and is keen to keep the momentum for not only Anna Bay but other areas in Port Stephens. Equally passionate about the project and seeing the momentum continue is Kelly Hammond. Kelly was on the team from day one and is keen to see Hannah Reserve shine as one of the highlights for the project. However she believes that the “other” end of town still needs attention. The makeover hasn’t reached both ends of the business precinct and she believes that this is a natural progression, particularly when some of the businesses that contributed funds aren’t really
reaping the rewards as yet. Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “Chamber is now looking at ways to get people into Anna Bay retail businesses with their wallets open and ready to spend. “We are also keen to see the rest of the funds spent on activating the whole business precinct.” Anderson was one of the key instigators of the makeover taking the proposal to Council which was ultimately adopted, it’s something that she is very proud of. “Chamber wanted to do things in our different precincts and being able to lobby to have this 7 Day Makeover adopted and funded by Council is a huge achievement for us as an organisation. “We did the one day working bee in Nelson Bay and now the town is looking so much better, the work at Anna Bay was of course so much more and the results are fantastic, however activating

BREAKING INTO THE MARKET “I’m twenty-seven years old and worried that home ownership will be out of my grasp. Have you any advice about how I can enter the market?” I’M impressed that you appreciate the value of home ownership when today’s opportunities offer so many distractions. Despite Australia’s healthy obsession with the security home ownership provides, contrary to popular belief that we rank #1 in home ownership, we rank 42nd behind the leader……Romania! Millennials tend to be a little later to the party when it comes to purchasing property, probably due to housing affordability, and for many the prospect of being able to afford a home can be daunting. It needn’t be. Saving for a deposit is key. I’m not sure if you’re living at home or renting, but if you’re at home you should be able to save a deposit more quickly. There has been some leeway in the amount required so check out what your target needs to be. Also examine first homebuyer programmes and think about whether a home or unit/apartment is your best option, not only regarding lifestyle but financial outlay. Of course, always seek the best financial advice to ensure you’re on the right path. And when the time comes, the R&R Team will be delighted to help you fulfill your home ownership dreams.
I hope this helps Denise

I always thought it was to do with asserting your ownership over something or telling on a mate, which clearly isn’t the scout ethos at all. Anyway, back to the issue of your mum. I don’t think there’s any harm in having a few spare items at home just in case things go a bit arse up. I mean if there’s mass flooding, or fires decimating huge swathes of land or baboons running through the streets because they don’t want vasectomies. You know, those sorts of things. And then to add a pandemic into the mix (not that we can call it that, but given the definition of it being the worldwide spread of a new disease then perhaps we are getting close), well, you know, Miss JS, if all those things were to happen, we’re not that far down the track from a zombie apocalypse really. Not meaning to worry you of course. So hey, if Mrs S wants to head down to Aldi and buy a couple of crates of spaghetti tins, Longlife milk and Spam, who are we to argue with her. I would just suggest that your mum shows a bit of restraint. You know, just get her to shop when the crowds have gone home because I can see her now in her face mask, one hand clutching a bottle of hand sanitiser, spraying every shelf with Glen 20 as she goes, refusing to accept change due to the spread of infection, glaring at every poor kid with a common cold. It might make people feel on edge. If, however, your mum is onto something, then you will rue the day you didn’t listen to her. Mum’s the word. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Bodybuilder Helps Women’s Network Members Set Goals
By Marian SAMPSON
THE ladies from Port Stephens Women in Business got down to the serious side of life – their bodies at their February meeting at PT Fitness. The event was hosted
by trainer and bodybuilder Joy Flint, who spoke about nutrition and fitness goals. Kerri Rodley of Port Stephens Women in Business told News Of The Area, “For me the takeaways were that getting into shape is 97% diet
and 3% exercise.” Joy explained how to get into the shape you want to be with an hour a day of physical activity be it cleaning, gardening or walking the dog. On top of this women need to perform four 45 minute
sessions exercise like running, or weight training to be physically fit. “Joy spoke about how important it is for women to do weight training of some sort as this impacts all facets of women’s health, as well as the importance of eating a good balance of protein, carbs and
fats at every meal” said Kerri. Joy Flint told News Of The Area, “It doesn’t matter what your goal is whether it is bodybuilding or something else, it is about committing to the goal, setting it and going for it.” Joy works with people of all levels of fitness to achieve their

goals. The network also took the opportunity to get involved in the Plastic Free Port Stephens movement and promoted the campaign #Icommitttodoingmybit with the network planning to have single use plastic free meetings.

Raises $6000 For Breast Cancer By Mitch LEES
WHEN Jake Smith asked his mother, Virginia what the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group did for the people in Port Stephens he knew he had to do something to help their cause. With a full head of shoulderlength hair and some contacts through his place of work at the Nelson Bay Golf Club, Jake decided it was time to lose the locks and raise some much needed funds. On Saturday, 29 February all Jake’s efforts paid off with $6000 raised and hundreds turning out to watch him get clipped for a great cause. Jake was humbled by the local support he received and attributed much of the inspiration for his charitable actions to his mum who is the Treasurer of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group.
“When I first asked mum about the group she worked with I knew I wanted to try and help
raise some funds for them,” said Jake. “I’d been growing my hair for

the past eight years and it was pretty easy to decide to try and get some money together for Breast Cancer Support by shaving the mane.” Jake was supported on the day by local Ken Wagner who clipped his impressive brows to help the fundraising along. Fingal Cellar Cafe donated $500 for the shave and a top auction bid of $400 came in that saw Jake lose his beard as well. His mother, Virginia Smith was proud of her son’s efforts and said the money raised would go a long way. “Jake came to me and said he was going to shave his head and try and help our cancer support group,” said Mrs Smith. “I’m so proud, he organised it all by himself and it’s amazing that he’s been able to raise so much in a relatively short time. “He doesn’t realise but it will help a lot of people here in Port
Stephens.” The Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group will also hold a fundraising Golf Day on 24 March. Contact the Nelson Bay Golf Club for more details.

Months later and the reality of the installations by the State Government is far from meeting the expectations of these communities. Minister Elliot’s Office has advised News Of The Area the following comments; “The upgrade works at Tea Gardens Police Station are funded under the Regional Small Police Station Program. “The Regional Small Police Station program is funded through the $118 million 2018/19 budget announcement for police property capital works and will deliver sustainable, modern premises that enable
Government’s commitment to the one million dollar upgrade, which would incorporate the heritage aspects of the building with the needs of the modern station, saying it is important we get it right. These communities are now left looking at two timber clad demountable buildings wondering how $1 million could have been spent on either. Ms Washington said, “It is a disgrace!” “Not only to my community—who have been lied to—but also to the local police who were promised a lot more than they got.” “If this demountable building… cost $117,000 to design… and $883,000 to construct, someone should be going to jail,” said Ms Washington. The community of Lemon Tree Passage is still awaiting the promised $1.5 million dollar Police Station.

Ms Washington is urging the Premier to revisit Karuah and the other regional towns where these wooden boxes are going to be constructed. “Take a look and tell me whether you are proud of what your Government has delivered. “There is nothing here to be proud of,” she said. The new police stations have been described as ‘Swedish saunas, they have no windows, no light, no airflow’. In June 2018 Premier Gladys Berejiklian visited Tea Gardens she promised a million dollars for the new “Well-equipped, modern police stations are fundamental to effective policing, and this upgrade will enhance the capability of local police to keep the Tea Gardens community safe.” When then Police Minister Troy Grant visited Tea Gardens he confirmed the

Emily Freeman scored two sizzling tries for the Hunter whilst Kate and Zali were relentless in attack setting a solid platform for the flashy backs to cross the line multiple times.
