Woman charged following an incident at Salamander Bay FROM Page 1
man and his 15-year-old daughter. The woman allegedly stabbed the man with the knife - that was covered by a protective sheath causing minor lacerations to his shoulder. The man attempted to drive away, and the woman got out of the car and walked with her child towards the shopping precinct. Members of the public confronted the woman, including a man armed with a chair. A 44-year-old man walked out of a grocery store and attempted to talk to the woman, however she
allegedly lunged at the man, striking him in the chest and back with the knife, causing minor lacerations. The sheath had been removed from the knife at this stage. The woman then entered the store and was locked inside by victims and witnesses. Inside the store, the woman chased a 50-year-old man and stabbed him in the back. She then allegedly took hold of her five-year-old daughter and stabbed her to the head several times before dragging her throughout the store by her hair for a short time.
Officers from Port StephensHunter Police District arrived and arrested the woman. During her arrest she allegedly punched a senior constable twice to the face. She had also suffered selfinflicted stab wounds to her head. The woman was taken to The Mater Hospital for treatment and assessment. The five-year-old girl was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment to several lacerations to her skull. The other victims were taken to Nelson Bay Poly Clinic where they were treated for their minor injuries.
Manager at Raymond Terrace MarketPlace, Ms Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz who said, “MarketPlace is a strong supporter of community PBL because we believe in the true value of what PBL is all about.” “We are so proud of our PBL schools in winning this amazing education award not only for their schools and our area but across NSW,” Ms MulhollandRuiz said. “Principals, teachers and all school staff along with students have worked so hard in making this program a success not only in their schools but in the
community and we are very blessed to be a part of this great partnership of schools and community.” “As we always say at MarketPlace teach the children well and let them lead the way.” Ms MulhollandRuiz has previously been recognised for her work with PBL when she was named two years ago as Port Stephens Council Citizen of the Year.

THE PORT Stephens Power AFL Club has wrapped up for the 2019 season. News Of The Area interviewed the President of Port Stephens Power AFL Club, Mr Mark Edgar. Last weekend the Club played in the second round of the semi-finals games. Mr Edgar said, “The U11s didn’t come home with a win in their second game against a Newcastle City team.” “The kids played a great game, but the Newcastle team went home with the win this time.” “The U13s were also defeated in their semi-final game against a great Cardiff team last weekend.”

Everyone in the community is invited to attend. Ms Karina Chambers, Community Liaison Officer at Hunter River High School told News Of The Area, “The initiative includes a toolkit to support career education.” “Part of the National Career Education Strategy has been for the FYA to develop three resources to support schools, industries, and adult caregivers to build effective relationships to support young people for the world of work.” The event will be held on Tuesday, 10 September from 5.00 to 7.00pm at Hunter River High School. Local employers will be present to help connect young people with jobs of the future. Ms Chambers said, “If you want to hear how the future of work looks for us all, this is an event not to be missed.” “Preparing young people for the new future of work is our importance.” “Jobs are not only important to our livelihood, they are also an important part of our lives and a key contributor to our happiness.” “The opportunities are
here and now.” The FYA event is concerned with harnessing the creativity, capabilities, and problem solving skills of young people combined with a social conscious to prepare them for a better future. “The players all played their hearts out, and they went down by only two points.” “This means that both teams missed out on playing in the Grand Finals this year.” The Hunter Central Coast AFL Regional awards evening was held on 29 August. At this event players are recognised for their achievements during the season. The Port Stephens Power AFL Club celebrated this season’s representative players.
U13s player Joshua Bohan was recognised and was awarded runner-up in the John Holmquest Trophy for the Best and Fairest U13s Swans Division for the League. Mr Edgar said, “This is an awesome effort and we are very happy for him.” He also said, “We have a great senior women’s’ team and we are looking forward to holding that team presentation evening.” The Club will finish up the season with a presentation day at the Great Aussie Bush Camp on Sunday, 15 September.

Understanding Bushfire Alerts By Marian SAMPSON
WITH bush fire season now in full swing it’s time to take action and to be armed with the right information and a bush fire survival plan. Last year in Port Stephens there were multiple bushfires which endangered people and property including the fires within the Mambo Wanda Wetlands. Knowing the alert levels is one place to start making sure your family and property is safe. There are three simple alert levels, the Rural Fire Service advises the status of fires using these alerts. The Advice alert level means that a fire has started. There is no immediate danger.
Stay up to date in case the situation changes. The Watch And Act alert level means that there is a heightened level of threat. Conditions are changing and you need to start taking action now to protect you and your family. This is when you need to use you bush fire survival plan. The Emergency Warning Alert is the highest level of Bush Fire Alert. You may be in danger and need to take action immediately. Any delay now puts your life at risk. Dennis Peters, Captain of Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue NSW told News Of The Area, “If you live on the edge of bush or grass land, clearing your gutters and keeping your yard clear of flammable materials are

important ways to prepare for a fire threat.” Our behaviour on a daily basis can cause a fire threat. “An easy way to prevent fires starting is to avoid throwing cigarette butts or other rubbish out of a vehicle. “By being considerate of your surroundings, you can avoid starting a potentially deadly fire,” he said. Being prepared for a bush fire and knowing how your family needs to respond to the various alerts could save lives. If there is a fire that you want to stay up to date on visit fires near me at https:// www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fireinformation/fires-near-me. If there is a fire and you do not need to be in the vicinity stay away, traffic during the Mambo Wanda Wetlands bushfire in 2018, from people wanting to see what was happening, caused additional stress on emergency services. Legacy Army Band Concert By Marian SAMPSON THE Australian Army Band Newcastle is coming to Port Stephens for its annual concert at the Tomaree Education Precinct Hall Salamander Way, Salamander Bay on Sunday, 8 September from 1.30pm – 4.00pm. Tickets are just $20pp, which are available at the door, school children free enter for free. All funds raised at the concert will go to support Legacy projects. The concert band is a non-profit organisation whose members come from all walks of life and musical ability ranging from beginners to professionals providing music for the community. With only a short break from service after World War II the Australian Army Band Newcastle has been performing since 1861. Members of the band are heavily invested in the support and promotion of the Australian Defence Force, while striving to develop music and musicians within the Hunter

Region. The band comprises ensembles from quartets to a full military band and it performs music from all genres. Legatee Doug Jacka told News Of The Area, “Last year’s amazing performance involving choreographed marching, with the band criss-crossing the area in
front of the stage while playing contemporary music designed to appeal to all ages.” “The pipes and drums sections were, as always, stirring. “Everyone present agreed it was the best show ever and the 2019 show promises to be even better,” he said.
The band aims to promote the enjoyment and fun of learning a musical instrument. Legacy was founded in 1923 by a small group of World War I veterans. They believed they had to accept a legacy responsibility for the welfare of the wives and children of their comrades
who were killed in the war or subsequently died. The Spirit behind Legacy is its service, and the key element is the personal contact which is maintained by individual Legatees with those they help. In Port Stephens (Tomaree and Tilligerry Peninsulas and Medowie), 30 dedicated Legatees
support about 240 widows and their dependents. Legacy’s services include bereavement support, advocacy for pension entitlements, rights and benefits by trained and experienced Pension Officers, financial hardship relief and assistance with children’s educational expenses.

TRANSFORMING A ROOM IN A DAY
“I’m pretty happy with my home’s presentation except for my living room. But I’ve run out of time and money. Any ideas?”
DON’T despair. You can accomplish so much with so little! Firstly new lounge feature cushions cost very little, even less if you’re able to source some new zip-on covers for your current cushions. Work with your room’s colour scheme and play with textures and patterns to really make your room pop. Rugs are a wonderful addition without overwhelming the eye. They’re also a great distraction if you have problem carpet areas, or bare floorboards look a little too bare. Borrow if you can’t afford to buy. For the cost of a tin of paint, roller and brushes, you may like to paint a feature wall, or if that’s not your go, wall art is brilliant for changing a room’s look. You may have some stored away, but if not, again…phone a friend. And don’t forget your green friends. Strategically placed potted plants; hanging, floor, benchtop or windowsills go with any décor and happily fill awkward spaces. They can also hide a multitude of disasters. Now you have your new room in record time and with minimum outlay!
of the Mambo Wetlands
IN celebration of National Threatened Species Day, Port Stephens Council is inviting the community to explore the natural wonders of the Mambo Wetlands at a free, family-friendly event from 4pm Friday 6 September. Participants will find out about the importance of the wetlands, learn about the native wildlife and plants that lie within and cap off the evening with a stroll to spot frogs, koalas and possums. Council’s Natural Resources Team Leader Jordan Skinner says the evening will be a unique experience. “The Mambo Wetlands aren’t just beautiful — they play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the port. “The wetlands improve water quality, provide a nursery for fish and crustaceans, and are a vital food source for birds, insects and other native animals. They are also home to a
large variety of wetland flora, some of which are threatened species. “Anyone who has an interest in learning about the natural wonders of the wetlands is invited to come along to this free event. “There will be an opportunity to explore the wetlands firsthand, get up close with koalas and possums, meet like minded community members and learn how to protect this important community asset. “The workshop has been made possible by a grant from the NSW Government’s Environmental Trust which is enabling us to restore and rehabilitate Mambo Wetlands, as well as educate the community about its importance.” Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the event is also an opportunity to celebrate the transfer of part of Mambo Wetlands back into community hands.
Dorin’s Draws
“The Mambo Wetlands is a precious part of the Port Stephens environment and an important community asset. “This is a great opportunity to explore the wetlands firsthand, learn more about the important role it plays in maintaining the health of the port and find out how we can all do our bit to protect it. “It’s also a wonderful way to celebrate the transfer of 7 lots at Port Stephens Drive back into community hands, so that we can protect Mambo Wetlands for future generations,” he said. The Mambo Wetlands celebration is a free event from 4pm Friday 6 September 2019 at Joe Redman Reserve, Foreshore Drive in Salamander Bay. Dear Jasminda,
I’m going to a school reunion next week and my life over the past twelve months has been a disaster. I feel as though I may break down if anyone asks how things are going. What is the best plan of attack? Ms KN, Salt Ash Dear Ms KN, You know lots of people don’t even attend their school reunions for this very reason, so I think you are very brave for even thinking about going. You don’t have to reveal your past twelve months. In fact, you’d be crazy to do so to anyone but your closest friends. At my first school reunion I was in the very unenviable position of being the only one there in a relationship with a man whose social skills were mirrored off Hando from Romper Stomper (what a keeper). I also had a baby. I think, at the end of the evening, I was voted ‘Least Likely to Succeed’. At the next reunion, I reunited with the barman, who I’d lost contact with, so it was a one-on-one reunion and I don’t think either of us spoke to another person all night. The most recent reunion was enjoyable until the girl who was the former nerd of the form drank too much and then told us all what she thought of us. On and on she went, and she made some very valid points, but who needs reality at a reunion. You’re really there to tell the world how fantastic your life is while you search for signs of mental breakdown and/or Botox in your former classmates. Seriously, my best advice is to just grit your teeth and endure it. Your school friends already know you. They all remember the time you vomited on the school bus and that unfortunate moment when you pashed the PE teacher (don’t stand, don’t stand so, don’t stand so close to me . . .). No amount of makeup or styling or subterfuge is going to make them see you in a light other than the one you created all those years ago. Just enjoy the moment, chat to everyone you can, and be thankful that you won’t have to endure another get-together for many years, if ever. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Small Schools are Great Schools
By Heather SHARP
MOUNT Kanwary Public School is showing that small schools really are great schools. The school with a reported student population of 35 is in Osterley is less than ten minutes from Raymond Terrace. The students have created a hashtag #smallschoolbighearts to celebrate their school. News Of The Area visited the school and interviewed Relieving Principal Ms Michelle Crowfoot. We asked her why parents might consider a small school to send their
children to. Ms Crowfoot said, “It’s a very personal thing.” “Parents are looking for the right fit for their child; it is what fits each child,” “Our school has a family atmosphere, a welcoming feel.” “The children are at the forefront of every decision we make.” We look to find the best learning fit for students.” At the school, each student is mapped individually and intricately. Individual Education Plan and students lead conferences are held every term. Given the school’s small size, they seek sponsorship opportunities to support the school’s ideas.
q The children are happy to come to school. Mayah Antcliff, Jacob Kisielewicz, and Jayden Tapper. Sophia Lawrence, Cooper Croese and Abigail Benseman.

THE weather threatened but it did not dampen the success of the Love Seafood Tastes Festival. While there were some light showers on Saturday Morning most of the day turned out to be sunny. Stockton and Magnus Streets Nelson Bay were closed to traffic. The Apex Park stage faced the new terraced seating giving festival goers plenty of places
to stop and enjoy the fine fare on offer. The festival spilled over into Port Stephens restaurants, and even art galleries got into the spirit, with the Artisan Collective’s Salted exhibition which was displayed in various shop fronts around the business precinct.. Rock Duty Tomaree’s Terrific Day Friday 13/09/2019
Louis Burt
By Marian SAMPSON
THIS week saw the students and staff at Tomaree Public School took on celebrating a range of landmarks all on one day. While the rain poured down, the students, staff and parents spirits stayed high. Book week was one of the highlights with the book parade seeing all the students dressed as characters from their favourite books. While the parade was

relocated to the school hall due to the inclement weather students and some staff, proudly strutted their costumes for all to see. There were plenty of Hogwarts students present including the clever Hermione Granger, for the book parade. Your NOTA reporter, on the scene, at the book week parade, spotted Where’s Wally, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Batman, a pirate, Wonder Woman,
Minnie Mouse, an array of Disney princesses and even a knight in shining armour. Batman, also known as Ben Cornish, Assistant Principal at Tomaree Public School told News Of The Area, “Tomaree’s Terrific, Totally Awesome Day is in its third year.” The school combines book week, science week, maths week, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day all into one celebration. The day kicked off with

a “blokes breakfast” which saw about 80 parents attend. The breakfast was followed by a successful parents morning tea. “The day finished off with reading rampage where students rotated through classrooms where teachers read their favourite picture book to the students,” he said. The day was well attended by parents and visitors and this NOTA reporter can confirm that Tomaree’s Terrific, Totally Awesome Day certainly delivered on terrific and awesome.

Aquatic Centre Extended Nelson Bay Golf Club Summer hours now in place GOLF
THE Summer swimming season at the Tilligerry Aquatic Centre has come early this year and there is a reason for this. Normally 1 October heralds in the extended hours (6am to 6pm) however a recent unforeseen closure of the outside pool at the Lakeside Centre, Raymond Terrace, has changed things for the Tilligerry pool.
Tilligerry no longer shuts at 12 noon and has extended its hours until 6pm to accommodate the regular Lakeside patrons and its squad swimmers. With many Lakeside swimmers living at Medowie, it is no great inconvenience as the extra travelling time isn’t too dramatic. Season ticket holders are
free to use both the Tomaree and Tilligerry Pools until the Lakeside problem is rectified. Currently the water temperature at Tilligerry is a comfortable 26 degrees and regular patrons now have the luxury of swimming in the morning or afternoon time slots as a bonus.

Running Success LIKE US
By Heather SHARP
MONICA Moore dreams of representing her School, State, and Country in the sport she loves best, running. The 15-year old Medowie Christian School student is well on the way to achieving her ambitions. Monica competes as a para-athlete as she has autism and a mild intellectual disability. She was selected to represent NSW at the

National Cross Country Championships last weekend as a T20 para-athlete. The selection to represent NSW at the nationals came after finishing second in the NSW All Schools State Cross Country. Monica came second is the 3 kilometre race held at Port Kembla Jogging Facility. When the para-athlete equations were assessed, it was worked out that Monica came third in Australia. Monica told News Of
The Area that her secret to winning is eating her vegetables and running along the river every two days. Monica’s coach, Ellie, also helps to bring out Monica’s best performance. Monica’s father, Mr Mike Moore told News Of The Area, “Her school has provided amazing support for Monica achieving her dreams.” “She is brave, determined, consistent, and honest.” CONTINUED Page 13
