Dream Playground Opened By Marian SAMPSON
SALT Ash Public School has it’s new playground. The School is a community hub in a community which is dealing with issues including the Red Zone. 87 Students attend the Primary School and all of them will benefit from this wonderful new facility. The project took four years of hard work and cost $65,000; was funded by the School’s fantastic Parents and Citizens (P&C) who fundraised for four years to turn a dream into a reality.
Wetlands Win q Salt Ash Public School students Jackson Wolinski, Cooper Donnelly and Annabella Barton.

IN 2016 the Port Stephens community first came together to save Mambo Wanda Wetlands and today they are elated.

The community has won the fight to keep the Mambo Wanda Wetlands preserved and in public hands. It was in 2016 that the NSW Department of Education sold off

land to a Private Developer the Government has undergone a lengthy process to buy back the land. “Kathy Brown of the Mambo Wanda Wetlands group told News

are celebrating. The buy back has reportedly cost the NSW Government $420,000.

There were many different activities on the fundraising journey from BBQs, and Mothers and Fathers Day stalls, to carnivals, discos, and raffles. School Principal Holly Deguara said, “There are so many positives and benefits of a small school, however when it comes to raising a substantial amount of money it can be quite tricky.” The new playground equipment encourages students to participate in fun, creative and safe physical activity, essential for all children’s development, whilst developing gross motor skills, including balance and coordination, risk taking, and it also provides opportunities for team building and social skills. The components of the playground were decided by the playground committee. The committee included representatives from the P&C, Salt Ash Public School staff and two students from each class,

The Group recently took a seven day trip to the Gold Coast and North Coast Roslyn Holman, Secretary of the Port Stephens Friendship Group spoke to News Of The Area about the trip, “What a time the travellers had with fun, laughter, sightseeing all
combined to make the trip memorable. “Highlights were the Slim Dusty Centre, Skypoint Observation Deck, Australian Outback Spectacular, Tamborine Rainforest Sky Walk and, of course, the wineries and so much more.” The Outback Spectacular is a tribute show to all things Australiana and tells the story of the Man From Snowy River. A great deal of organisation goes into such an adventure and the group

Waterwatch Citizen Scientists
By Marian SAMPSON
WATERWATCH is a National Citizen Science program, involving landholders, community groups and schools, across NSW. Waterwatch is happening right here in Port Stephens. It aims to engage communities in monitoring and protecting the health of local waterways. Small waterways make up three-quarters of the total waterway network within any given catchment and they are of great interest to local communities. NSW Waterwatch participants like Col and Clyne Bridgeman, can take an active role in monitoring the health of their local catchments by conducting monthly water quality testing and optional seasonal surveys of aquatic macroinvertebrates, to understand and monitor the health of their rivers, and provide quality assured data, which is uploaded to the NSW Waterwatch online database. With the data they collect, communities can influence the management of their local waterways and take direct action. Each month the Bridgemans take samples of water quality from the wetlands and waterways that lead into the Bay. Col Bridgeman told News Of The Area, “We have
been testing water for the past five years and conduct seven different tests at each location.” Citizen Science participants in the Waterwatch program investigate local catchments, looking at the landform, the rocks and soils, rainfall patterns, and the living things such as plants and animals. They learn to understand what is happening in their catchment and identify water quality problems, such as pollution, erosion, channel obstructions, over extraction and over use by some
recreational activities. Identify solutions: For each environmental problem, there are a range of solutions. Knowing what the problems are and how bad they are will help identify the best solutions. The volunteers at Waterwatch working with Land Services NSW take action to help fix the problems such as planting trees to help stop erosion. You can get involved in Waterwatch and become a Citizen Science participant by visiting www. nswwaterwatch.org.au.

ONCE again there was a huge turnout for the weekly Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Awards at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace. Of those receiving an Award were students from nine local schools with some students participating and travelling from as far away as Karuah. Each of the students was nominated for a special contribution which they have made to our community. Lue Fagan of Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “Our school has been involved from the inception of this wonderful program. “Students are publicly recognised and acknowledged by staff or community members for acts of kindness in the community.

On 28 December 2018 the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales decided the case of Hourigan v Howard [2018] NSWLEC 1686. The applicants claimed plants along the fence line obstructed sunlight to their property and sought a remedy from the court. The Trees (Disputes Between Neighbours) Act 2006 No 126 [NSW] (“the Act”) empowers the court to “remedy, restrain or prevent a severe obstruction” (Part 2A) of sunlight to a window, or any view from a dwelling (section 14B). The particular plants were found to have an average height of 2.5 m, with some new shoots reaching above 2.5 m. Therefore, Part

2A of the Act applied. Relevantly, in winter only part of the lower section of the affected windows was obstructed; there was no obstruction of sunlight for the remainder of the year. Consequently, the court concluded the obstruction of sunlight was “not severe” and therefore the court could not make any orders relating to the offending trees. If you are considering an application to “remedy, restrain or prevent a severe obstruction” to sunlight to your windows or a view from your house caused by trees on your neighbour’s property, the height of the offending trees must exceed 2.5 m and the obstruction of sunlight must be severe.
organised the setup, packed down and refereed a PSSA knockout game. Hunter River’s Lydia Bailey was recognised for teaching dance to younger students at Tea Gardens Public School. Karuah’s Heidi Reynolds was awarded for showing respect, responsibility and pride in the community and her school. Michaela Kernke of Irrawang Public School was recognised for her kindness
and respect. While Zoe Austin’s assistance with younger students at the bus stop saw her receive an Award. Salt Ash’s Blake Smith is helpful and holds the gate open for students to safely access the bus. Patrick Eaton of Raymond Terrace Public School contributes positively to the Big Looks After Little program, and he is an excellent role model in the community was well deserving of a PBL award.
Seaham’s Luke Young consistently looks out for young students’ welfare. While Archy Burns was recognised for helping out at the school canteen and was looking after the chickens. The NOTA congratulates all these PBL Award recipients and looks forward to the announcement of the next recipients at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace on Thursday night next week.

Irrawang High School’s LSU Work Experience at Bunnings
By Marian SAMPSON
STUDENTS from the Irrawang High School Support Unit are getting out and about in the community. A group of senior students go there each Tuesday for several hours as part of their Work experience program. All students and the two accompanying staff love their time at Bunnings, receiving compliments from customers and staff alike. Working at local businesses like Bunnings gives these students invaluable insights, and allows them opportunities which they would otherwise not encounter. Work experience is a valuable asset for all students to participate in. It shows employers that the students have knowledge of workplaces and how they
should behave in them. Many skills learnt in one workplace can be transferred to other industries. Lue Fagan of Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “They have now become part of the Bunnings team.” While on work experience the students are learning many life skills including: managing public transport to and from
Bunnings, interacting with staff and customers, showing initiative and working as part of a team. “Whilst there, they face the shelves, return misplaced items using a scanner, tidy the aisles and general cleaning,” she said. Learning customer service skills and showing initiative are valuable life skills.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com. au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
Can I buy property with my superannuation funds? THIS is a common question, to which I always answer with referring the client to their accountant, but here is a very brief and general overview. Purchasing this way is a possibility through establishing a self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF). Members combine their superannuation accounts and use them to purchase assets. Since 2007 SMSF’s have also been able to borrow to help fund the purchase of property. Like any entity that owns property the SMSF collects the rent and is responsible for the associated costs such as interest, council rates and insurances. As the sole purpose of superannuation is to fund retirement, there are limitations, which include: Members of the fund & their associates (eg family members) cannot live or stay in the property. You will need to have enough funds to pay the deposit, stamp duty and related costs. Ensuring the fund has adequate cash flow to meet loan repayments and expenses. Tightening of lending policies by financial institutions may make achieving finance approval difficult. I am not an accountant and therefore this advice is general in nature and you should always seek financial advice from financial experts for your circumstances. Hope this helps Denise

Six-hectare site has purchased to expand Mambo Wetlands CONT’ FROM Page 1
The land is not only safe from development but there are plans in place through Council to undertake a 3 year program to remove weeds and involve the community in the rehabilitation of Mambo Wanda Wetlands since the devastating 2018 fires. “I hope that from now on the Department of Planning will take notice before the sale of land like Mambo Wanda Wetlands of submissions from Councils, Members of Parliament and the community.” On a positive note Kathy Brown and the team that worked so hard to save Mambo Wanda Wetlands have not only left a legacy for our community, they have left a better more accessible Mambo Wanda Wetlands. “Council now plans to put walking trails and interpretative signage into the wetlands. “So many people and organisations need to be thanked, Kate Washington, Port Stephens Council, Eileen Donaldson who started the first Facebook Group, everyone who turned up to meetings and made submissions and of course those who contributed to the fundraising efforts, everyone’s contribution made a difference,” she said. Through Council and Landcare working bees we will see the land cleared of weeds and this process will involve the community getting their hands dirty on the last Wednesday of every month for the next 3 years. A film is about to be produced telling the story of Mambo Wanda Wetlands. Mambo being saved is a win for Port Stephens

koalas population, a win for the environment and a win for people power. Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said the purchase of the site at 246-248 Port Stephens Drive, Salamander Bay, will ensure the land is returned to the community for future generations to enjoy. “This site sits adjacent to the ecologically important Mambo Wetlands, which is treasured by the community and has a strong Aboriginal history and connection for the local Maaiangal people,” Mr Stokes said. Environment Minister Matt Kean welcomed the acquisition, which he said was a win for the community of Port Stephens and visitors to the region. “The protection of this site will also support the local koala population and endangered and threatened species including powerful owls, squirrel gliders, bats and migratory birds,” Mr Kean said. “It’s important we secure the future of threatened species in NSW, like the koala. This site will help to support the NSW Koala Strategy – a $44.7 million program – to secure the future of koalas in the wild. “The Salamander Bay site contains fire trails and bush tracks which the community can access to experience the mature trees, native shrubs and grasses typical of a coastal wetland environment.” The property was purchased under the Coastal Lands Protection Scheme, a long-running NSW Government initiative, set up by the Liberals & Nationals in 1973, which acquires coastal land for public access to the coast, scenic value or for environmental protection.
My daughter is a vegetarian and now every time we sit down to a meal that includes meat, she makes the sound of that particular animal. Mealtimes are so unenjoyable. Mr LK, Boat Harbour OH, Mr LK, you know sometimes when I seek solutions I turn to philosophy or case law or a thesis written by a student having an existential crisis, and sometimes I need to look no further than Kermit, who made a very valid point when he sang, ‘It’s not easy being green.’ Despite all the information out there on the benefits to ourselves and our planet when we cut down or even cut out meat, vegetarians get a bad rap. Vegans are for some akin to the anti-Christ, such is the level of hatred and taunting they receive for making what is often an ethical decision based on being kind to other creatures who have no say in their destiny. Still, your daughter’s approach is a bit in-your-face, and that is part of the issue. Some vegans and vegos happily go about their lives without discussing their choices and others, like the militant vegan, chain themselves to abattoirs and post videos of pigs squealing and chickens being boiled alive, which is a bit unpalatable when you’re sitting down to your Sunday bacon and egg roll. Dinners must be a rollicking affair at your place, Mr LK. I can imagine your wife bringing her casserole to the table and your daughter warming up her vocal chords before starting a plaintive rendition of Old MacDonald Had a Farm. It is enough to put anyone off their meal. May I suggest you serve fish? Then you will just have to sit there and watch her silently gulping, which, although distracting, is certainly quieter.
