Rotarians Raise Over $15K for Fire Victims FROM Page 1
see the “Australian” attitude of helping out our mates. We gave for the Tsunami in Indonesia, and we give to our own be it fire, flood or drought. We roll up our sleeves and we simply help out in whatever way we can. There is no doubt that we will keep giving in numerous ways through our local Service Clubs, Charities and through larger events like concerts. It’s simply just part of the Australian DNA. This was clear as Aussies from around the region and our visitors dug deep and gave generously to the Rotarians. The Nelson Bay Rotary Club held a very successful Appeal for bushfire Victims at Salamander Bay Shopping Centre in January.
q Richard Turner, Helen Ryan, President Arja Levonpera, organiser Peter McBean and Kathy Rimmer.
Successfully raising a total of $15,719.00 over 3 days for the victims through the Rotary Australia World Community Service. The entire sum will be distributed through various Rotary Clubs to victims in bushfire affected areas. Club President Arja Levonpera told News Of The Area, “I am amazed at the support of both local residents and visitors to Port Stephens. “I can’t compliment and thank enough, the organiser of the Appeal, Rotarian Peter McBean, and the Club volunteers who manned the collection booth,” she said. Ms Levonpera also had a special word of thanks to the management of the Salamander Bay Shopping Centre who were quick to respond to the Club’s request to raise the funds. Further funds for both Bushfire and Drought Victims will be raised at the Club’s Annual Charity Golf day held at Nelson Bay Golf Club on Friday February 3 April 2020.

World Wetlands Day A Call To Further Protect Mambo Site By Mitch LEES
They help to replenish aquifers by trapping sediments and run off from the land as well provide vital nursery sites for plants, birds, mammals, fish, molluscs and crustaceans. IN AUSTRALIA wetlands are seen as crucial ecosystems in the survival and protection of many threatened fauna and flora species. According to the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, Australia’s wetlands are seen to act as ‘the kidneys’ of the natural world.

RESIDENTS may very well wonder why Port Stephens has been so hot recently despite the cooling sea breeze from the north east kicking in on most days. Tilligerry meteorologist Alan Gibson explains, “The Upper Hunter regularly gets temperatures in the high forties.” Mr Gibson said, “Our coastal temperatures are less but the THI (Thermal Heat index) is higher because the on-shore wind brings with it very high humidity. In fact the sea temperature hovers around 27 degrees at the moment and the wind picks up moisture which has an effect on the body. This makes us feel much hotter.”

MORE than 1.25 billion animals were killed in the 2019 / 2020 bushfires and many more injured and in need of care. Abandoned, orphaned and injured Australian natives; in particular young marsupials need extra special care. Port Stephens local Kerrie Cottrill of Anna Bay wanted to do something to help. Sewing pouches was something Kerrie could do, and she did. After one day of making possum pouches on her own, she realised that one person sewing wasn’t going to meet the needs of wildlife carers. Kerrie decided that she needed to mobilise the people who also wanted to help and create a production line. In a few short days, Kerrie had organised for Council to donate the space for the work and for community members to collect and donate cotton, linen and wool for the pouches and to seek volunteers who came out of the woodwork armed with sewing machines, scissors and a positive attitude. The support of the local community and businesses has been somewhat overwhelming for Kerrie. Kerrie Cottrill told News Of The Area, “Woolworths

She realised that she needed more people so she started contacting women’s groups and contacting as many people as she could to raise awareness and get help. “It has been outstandingly successful, and that’s because there were people out there like me that thought what can we do and didn’t know what to do.” One local woman said, she made five pouches and when she mailed them the

Kerrie is planning a second working bee to make even more pouches in the
near future. Donations of natural fibre sheets and blankets and of course volunteer sewers will all be welcome for round two of this movement which has caught off in the Port Stephens community. If you can make a cup of tea, cut, sort, fold or participate in quality control, you can help.

NEIGHBOURING FENCES
“The fence between myself and my neighbour is falling down. It really needs replacing but my neighbour can’t afford to share the cost but is happy for me to erect a new fence. What are my options? I don’t want this to be a problem between us” POLICE and Council records show the majority of disputes and callouts to be between neighbours and most likely over fence issues. So, if as the theme song goes, “good neighbours become good friends” it’s to everybody’s advantage to keep it that way! You do have options that will keep the peace – provided there’s clear communication between both parties from the outset. Firstly, you can legally issue a notice to comply which will obviously create tensions between you. So, if you can afford to, you might be quite happy to pay for the fence and know that you have a secure boundary that no doubt enhances your property. The security and peace of mind that provides may well override the cost issues. There is also another option that might be feasible. You could enter an arrangement with your neighbour, whereby you pay for the fence up front and your neighbour pays you back in agreed instalments over an agreed period. Yes, it could get messy, but I know of numerous instances where this has been done and worked well for both parties. An open dialogue about the options would be an excellent start.
THE Port Stephens Friendship Group held a wonderfully successful function at the Saltwater Bistro, Fingal Bay Surf Club. With some 108 guests present it is clear that this group is one that engages well locally with the over 60’s that share in its activities. Attendees had the time of their lives, with excellent food, followed by much dancing supported by a professional DJ. Philip Greentree told News Of The Area, “The Port Stephens Friendship Group is perfect for anyone who would you like to widen their friendships and take part in activities with likeminded people.”
The group is especially for the over 60s, and welcomes all comers whether they are couples or unattached. The basis of the group is to provide great social activities with something for everyone to enjoy. Members share friendship while enjoying activities such as dining, barbecues, movies, lawn bowls, fishing, walks and trips away. The Port Stephens Friendship Group meets on the last Tuesday each month at Wests Diggers in Nelson Bay from 5pm. Meetings often include an interesting guest speaker and are followed by dining within the club. If you would like to expand your social circle of friends consider the Port Stephens Friendship Group and contact President David Long 0401 267 888 or longdavid707@ rocketmail.com

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.
Dear Jasminda,
Now my child has started school I'm a bit lost. Any suggestions? Mrs PV
OH Mrs PV, I have so many suggestions. Think of all the things that you have been unable to do with a young child at home. Have you been to the bathroom without being interrupted yet? Had an entire conversation without making frantic hand gestures in an attempt to stop your precious child finger painting the walls? Gone to a coffee shop and not had people stare at you with that 'Why would you bring a child here?' expression. Now is the time to take up a hobby you've always wanted to try - go to the gym, give painting a whirl, schedule in that nervous breakdown that you haven't had time for until now. The sky really is the limit. If you are still at a loose end, you could always join in on school-based activities - help out with reading groups, attend excursions, be a canteen helper, or one of countless activities that are on offer. What you will find, over the next couple of weeks, is that the time between drop off and pick up will absolutely fly and within a couple of years you'll possibly even be one of those parents counting down the days until the school holidays are over and you can have your freedom back again. The other option of course is home schooling if you really do want to spend every waking hour with your child. Do you really want to do that, Mrs PV? Enjoy your newfound independence. Go shopping without tantrums. Try on a dress without having the curtain ceremoniously flung open when you are down to your underwear. Have a coffee in peace, and look forward to enjoying the afternoon with your child once the school bell goes. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

By Julie MCKIMM CELEBRATING the 40th Anniversary for the Club this year, the Medowie Marauders Rugby Union Club is looking forward to the season ahead. The Club has introduced a second men’s social 4th grade squad due to a significant player participation increase which is great for players who cannot commit to playing on weekends, but who want to play socially without a lot of training commitments involved as it is played on a Friday night. Head Coach Tim Lancaster spoke to News Of The Area and said, “I am coordinating the partnership with Nelson Bay Rugby to identify Medowie Rugby Union players who are of premier 1 or 2 standard and advocate for opportunities for grade progression.” In season 2019 the playing group had a huge learning curve operating under a more professional training schedule and game play structures. Having now mastered a lot of the core concepts from last season the coaching team in 2020 is now heavily focused on getting the playing squad to an excellent standard of fitness to match and hopefully exceed any of the powerhouse Newcastle and Hunter based Teams. The Club has also recruited several key players which has bolstered an already competitive roster including powerful outside back Taniela Rabolalele (Wests Rugby League), former NSW Country Cockatoos flyer Paul Mlotkowski, Rangy Backrower John Lundie, slick Halfback Daniel Murphy (Avoca Beach Rugby Union) and experienced Hooker & RAAF representative Benjamin Green. In recent years the club has been led by standout players such as Tevita Qurovara, Jarrod Bowden, Sam Holbert, Adam Beehag, and Eric Tolhurst. In 2020, with the addition of new playing structures, classy backs (such as Jessey Bridge) to complement a large, battle hardened & mobile pack - The Marauders are looking to become a major force within the NHRU premier competition.
