Celebrate International Womenโ€™s Day c NOTA Graphics - Ref: CBR_030119

By Marian SAMPSON

I N T E R NAT I O NA L Womenโ€™s Day (IWD) is being celebrated in Port Stephens at a lunch organised by the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay on 6 March at Soldiers Point Bowling Club. This yearsโ€™ guest speaker is Gemma Sisia who works with children in

Africa at the school of St Judes. Council will be awarding three $1000 scholarships to Women living in Port Stephens at the lunch. The scholarship program is designed to support local women and the contribution they make to our community across a range of fields.

The first IWD was held in 1911, and more than a million people turned out to rallies in Europe. For most of the 20th century IWD was acknowledged and celebrated by people at the grassroots level, a rallying point for social justice. It wasnโ€™t until 1975 โ€“ International Womenโ€™s

Year โ€“ that the United Nations adopted IWD on March 8, when it is still held. IWD is a day to recognise how far weโ€™ve come towards gender equality, and also how far we have left to go. Once women couldnโ€™t vote, they are now leading countries.

In countries such as Australia we have rights, but we still donโ€™t have complete equality. The majority of the worldโ€™s women arenโ€™t anywhere near as close to that goal as we are. In Australia women and girls make up just over half (50.7 per cent) of the Australian population and roughly 47 per cent of all employees.

Women take home on average $251.20 less than men each week, and on average, Australian women have to work an extra 56 days a year to earn the same pay as men for doing the same work. Australian women account for 68% of primary carers for older people and people with disability. 95% of primary

Community Meeting set to Meet Candidates By Marian SAMPSON

WITH State Government elections looming Port Stephens has been an epicentre for promises, grants and even some being called out for dirty campaign politics. There is additional police, the Nelson Bay Road Duplication, Regional Road repairs, a new TAFE for the Bay, air-conditioners in every classroom being offered, and more. For voters, in this election, being informed is more important than ever. The Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) is offering voters a chance to hear and question the candidates at a preelection public forum. TRRA President, Mr Geoff Washington said, โ€œI am delighted that Port Stephens MP Kate Washington, the Labor Candidate, and Jaimie Abbott, the Liberal Candidate, have confirmed their participation in this yearโ€™s TRRA forum.โ€ With nominations closing on 6 March, other candidates will be invited as they announce that they

are standing. โ€œIndependent Bill Doran has also accepted our invitation to participate, while Theresa Taylor, who is standing for the Animal Justice Party, has given an apology

q Liberal candidate Jaimie Abbott.

due to a prior commitment,โ€ he said. There will also be a short session on โ€œHow your Preferences Workโ€ on the night. The Forum will be held on Monday, 11 March in the Nelson Bay Bowling Club Auditorium, commencing at 7.00pm. If past TRRA Meet the Candidate Meetings are anything to go by the evening will be a great way for members of the community to find out where each candidate sits on issues which are of importance to those living throughout Port Stephens. It is expected that the issue of Mambo Wanda Wetlands will be high on some residentsโ€™ agenda. Kate Washington told News Of The Area, โ€œThe Liberal Government chose to ignore our community in 2016 when they sold off Mambo Wetlands to a property developer for $250,000.โ€ โ€œThat wonโ€™t be forgotten by local residents, especially considering the precious parcel of land is still owned by the property developer,โ€ she said. Catherine Cusack MLC said,

q Labor candidate Kate Washington.

q Independent candidate Bill Doran.

โ€œThe Department of Planning recommends a negotiated settlement. โ€œThat is the 6 month phase; for negotiation. โ€œI can confirm a negotiated price has not yet been achieved albeit we are not at the end of negotiations. โ€œOnce the 6 months expires it is open to the Government to go into the next phase which is legal resumption of the land.

โ€œThat is a new process and the outcome is certain.โ€ โ€œExpectations this issue would be resolved prior to the election were probably uninformed,โ€ she said. TRRA have already committed to holding a Meet the Candidates Forum for the upcoming Federal Elections which are being held later this year the date, is yet to be set.

Meet The Candidate Theresa Taylor THIS week, News Of The Area contacted the Port Stephens candidate for the 23 March State election, Ms Theresa Taylor. Belonging to the still relatively unknown minor partyโ€” the Animal Justice Party (AJP) currently has one representative in the NSW Parliamentโ€”considers the welfare of animals to be its top priority. Each candidate in this series of profiles has been asked what they consider to be the three main areas of concern for Port Stephens votes and how, if elected, they will address those issues. The three issues outlined by Ms Taylor include: the koala population, renewable energy targets, and stronger animal cruelty laws. Expanding on each of these, Ms Taylor told News Of The Area, โ€œThe [stopping of the] extinction of koalas is extremely important in Port Stephens because their habitat is being destroyed for

commercial development and logging in native forests.โ€ โ€œThe east coast is the main home for koalas, once their habitat is gone they are extinct.โ€ โ€œAnimal Justice Party is committed to advocating in parliament, stronger laws to protect their homes in order to protect them.โ€ โ€œHabitat destruction is the leading cause to koala extinction. โ€œ Her second concern, setting a renewable energy target, is important, โ€œIn order to safeguard a stable and healthy environment for future generations.โ€ โ€œClimate change is a serious issue that isnโ€™t being addressed enough in Parliament.โ€ โ€œClimate change not only affects us but affects wild animals and eco systems.โ€ Ms Taylorโ€™s third issue is to advocate for stronger animal cruelty laws, telling News Of The Area, โ€œI will establish an enquiry into kangaroo slaughter, banning animals used in circuses and banning

cruel puppy farms.โ€ โ€œI will help farmed animals by pushing for mandatory CCTV cameras in all abattoirs and intensive farms.โ€ โ€œI will advocate for mandatory shade for all farmed animals and the banning of cruel battery hen cages.โ€ Ms Taylor said she is motivated to run for parliament โ€œBecause animals have no representation in parliament.โ€ โ€œLaws are made in parliament and because no one is there to give them a voice they have become systematically abused in our society.โ€ โ€œIf AJP can have another seat in the upper house on the cross bench with Mark Pearson, our first elected MP we can strongly push for animal protection laws.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m running in the election for Australians to have the option to give their vote to the animals.โ€ โ€œVoting for Animal Justice Party is also best because our core values are always used

In response to whether or not the AJP supports a public high school in Medowie, Ms Taylor replied, โ€œIf a high school is will help the community and create equality in society which is one of our core values I would support it.โ€

Artist In Residence By Marian SAMPSON

RAYMOND Terrace local artist Florence Humphreys will be one of the artists in residence at Morpeth Gallery on the weekend of 9-10 March 2019. Florence, who is in her seventies, is a self-taught painter who specialises in Australian wildflowers. Her works are adorned with flannel flowers, banksias and stunning waratahs. As artist in residence at Morpeth Gallery Florence will be painting teapots and other pieces of china. Visitors to the gallery can watch as Florence creates stunning masterpieces featuring the treasures of Australian flora. Also exhibiting at the gallery will be Master Painter of the World John McCartin. John has new paintings for the exhibition โ€œFestival of Two Palettesโ€. Visitors to the gallery will have a chance to talk with him and admire this International award winning artist, as well as Florence and other artists of note. Florence Humphreys told News Of The Area, โ€œI participated in the Teapot

a great deal of our area surrounded by water, and rock fishing is an activity that many of our locals and visitors regularly enjoy,โ€ he said. โ€œIt is an activity which also comes with some inherent risks, and weโ€™re committed to putting safety first.โ€ Mayor Palmer said, โ€œBy opting into the Act, weโ€™ll be enforcing that all rock fishers and anyone assisting them โ€“ including children in

Proposed Makeover for Town Centre STREETS that prioritise people, a greener town centre and more spaces for the community to enjoy โ€” thatโ€™s the exciting new vision for Nelson Bay that has been unveiled by Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer. Mayor Palmer says the new Public Domain Plan for Nelson Bay is now on public exhibition for community feedback. โ€œNelson Bay is a thriving place, which is leaping forward into its next chapter. This time last year, we asked the community what they loved about the Bay and what

Mayor Palmer says Port Stephens Council received much-needed funding from the NSW Government to develop the plan for Nelson Bay. โ€œJust like an architect draws up plans for a house, a Public Domain Plan paints a picture of how the streets and public spaces will look and feel, and how those spaces can be used by the community. โ€œThis plan celebrates Nelson Bayโ€™s unique identity as a town by the Bay โ€” a place where our locals and tourists want to live, work, play and stay. โ€œThe Public Domain Plan will be used to guide future investment in Nelson Bay, including grant funding and

they would like to see more of. โ€œThis new Public Domain Plan proposes three big moves to achieve that community vision over the next 20 years. Our first move is to add more street trees in the town centre and create better connections to the foreshore and Tomaree National Park. โ€œWe also want to have a town centre that is peoplefriendly, so that itโ€™s easier to walk or ride your bike around town. โ€œFinally, we want to create more high quality spaces for our locals and tourists to enjoy night and day, year-round.

q Proposed design for Stockton Street, Nelson Bay as featured in the new Public Domain Plan. future works by Council. Many of these works will be fast-tracked if our Special

Rate Variation application is approved by IPART, seeing a number of key actions from

the plan kicking off in the short-term,โ€ Mayor Palmer said.

Dear Jasminda,

O

My hairdresser was on holidays so, in desperation, I had to use another hairdresser who works at the same salon. She actually did a much better job than my normal hairdresser and now I want to swap, but I donโ€™t want to hurt his feelings. What should I do?

Mrs VA, Medowie Dear Mrs VA,

Dear Denise,

The Local Agent Keeps Saying They Have a Buyer but I want to do some Repairs First! GF Medowie IF an agent has just sold a Neighbours home and they are advising that they have buyers, then they probably do. From my experience, there are usually potential buyers when a property is sold, who have missed out, and are currently feeling very disappointed. This is a great opportunity for the next seller to achieve a sale fairly quickly. As an agent it can be frustrating though when you know a neighbour wishes to sell but they decide to hold off to do some minor repairs & maintenance thinking that the buyers will still be there when theyโ€™re finished. Understandably, the homeowner wishes to present the home in its best shape but unfortunately the buyer usually doesnโ€™t wait around for long. So it is optimal to show them through the property as soon as you can. As you would know by now I donโ€™t normally give this advice, but in this instance; Have a good think about whether you are definitely ready to sell your home. If the answer is yes, then present the home as best but as quickly as you possibly can and let the agent show the potential buyer through. Strike while the iron is hot as they say, & you may just have yourself a sale! I hope this helps! Denise

Disappointed at Motion for Boomerang Park

Council passed a rescission motion to allow development of an aged care OPINION in favour of the recession motion, due to a tied vote result. No wonder the community has little faith in this Councilโ€™s decision making process, when the community is not listened to, or respected. The decision on the development will now go to a community sub-committee (representatives elected by the Council) for advice, so that they can fulfil the obligations for โ€œconducting community consultationโ€ as required by the NSW Department of Planning prior to the land being rezoned for development to proceed. We all are aware of what the outcome of this committee decision will be, however it would be amazing if we were proven wrong.

Dear News Of The Area,

C O N G R AT U I L AT I O N S to those few councillors who stuck by their original votes two weeks ago, to support the decision to not allow housing development in Boomerang Park. Last week, Council passed a rescission motion to allow the way for the development of an aged care/nursing home/ homeless development facility (whatever!) in place of the original โ€œover 50sโ€ housing plan, which was defeated two weeks ago. The Mayor, who originally was so supportive for the retaining of the park without a housing development, turned 180 degrees by voting twice

Deny contact Ms Cusack Dear News of the Area IN your edition of the 28 February, the Honourable Catherine Cusack alleges that I stood over her pressing myself into her in a disgusting effort to physically bully her at a public rally. I emphatically deny that allegation. Grant Kennett Corlette

It is so disappointing and disrespectful, that after so many years of fighting development on the park, the community is expected to accept a similar dwelling development (under another name) to be built in Boomerang Park. Development is always Development โ€“ the park belongs to the people, not to greedy, power hungry developers and their appointed puppets on the Council. It is important that the community of Raymond Terrace knows what is going on in their town.

YOU have just sent a shiver up the spine of every hairdresser in Medowie. They are currently cross-referencing their bookings to find the culprit and gazing at each other with slitty-eyed stares (made more difficult by the casual lock of hair that covers one eye in that terribly fashionable but totally impractical hairstyle hairdressers sport). You canโ€™t swap hairdressers on a whim. Your appearance is not the important thing here, Mrs VA. Of prime importance is, and always will be, the hairdresserโ€™s self-esteem. A hairdresser expects loyalty. We are mere mannequins for their artistic forays. You could be destroying the reputation of Medowieโ€™s Monet. It is not worth the risk. I recommend you take a long, hard look at yourself for even contemplating such a fickle move. Swap? You canโ€™t just swap! Your relationship with your hairdresser is like a marriage. You are in for the long haul. The good and the bad. In sickness and in health. Till death do you part (or the salon closes, or you relocate โ€“ whatever comes first). I hope Iโ€™ve managed to knock some sense into the momentarily absent mind that resides beneath those finely coiffed tresses. Carpe diem, Jasminda

DAN Newberry is a performer with years of experience playing and performing in bands around Australia. He has turned his talents to a solo show that aims to bring the feel of a band as a soloist, playing along with pre-recorded natural sounding looped beats created with the guitar and tambourine. His voice with a range that can go from Johnny Cash to Katy Perry to John Farnham to ACDC will amaze those in his audience. Playing at Bulahdelahโ€™s Plough Inn this Friday 8 March, head long and see his strong soloing ability on the guitar over looped rhythm guitar parts.

Peter Rogers, Ian Taylor, Greg Ross, Peter McClennan and swept by James Fitzpatrick were undefeated on the last days racing to come away with the Gold medals from a very elite racing carnival. โ€œIt is great that the clubs crews continue to do well,โ€ Peter said. โ€œThe family atmosphere and the continued competition success the club generates at present has made for a great feeling amongst the entire Boat section.โ€ Late last year, the Clubโ€™s Open Reserve Menโ€™s Boat Crew created history for the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club when they were crowned World Champions at the International Life Saving World Championships in Adelaide. The results from the Pacific Palms โ€˜Battle of the Boatsโ€™ Carnival places the crews in a great position to be successful heading into the upcoming State and Australian Championships.

They first must qualify in The Australian Open Footgolf series and become a World Ranking player. The Australian Open which is qualifying round for the Asia Cup will kick off at Horizons Golf Resort at Salamander Bay at 3pm with social play commencing at 3.40pm. Bob Westbury of Horizons Golf Resort told News Of The Area, โ€œFootgolf is a sport that anyone can play, if you can kick a soccer ball, you can play footgolf.โ€

Footgolf is played just like regular golf, if it is a par 3 hole you get three kicks to get the soccer ball into the special footgolf holes. The Footgolf holes are set away from the greens and are covered during regular golf. โ€œThis is a great way to see the professionals in action, and try the sport yourself,โ€ he said.
