Community Angst Over Second Resort

adjacent to the current derelict resort which was never completed on Gan Gan Road at Anna Bay. Residents have been expressing their angst over the derelict site for years and they are not prepared to revisit a resort on an adjacent site, especially when the derelict site is detracting from their town. The broken, graffitied walls, and falling down fences at the derelict site are all far from a welcome look when arriving to visit either the township of Anna Bay or the magnificent Birubi Point and the Stockton

Dunes. This derelict site is often one of the first things our international and domestic tourists see as they arrive in Port Stephens. Worse, many locals look at it every day. The community gathering this week was about raising awareness on the resort proposal which many believe is inconsistent with the zoning of the land. Current zoning for the land prohibits hotels and resorts. The elements of the DA are clear: the developer wants to build a 247 unit resort with bars, cafes and swimming
pools. Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “This is not an eco tourist facility that is being proposed it is a ‘full blown’ hotel resort, which is prohibited under the current zoning.” Kate Washington believes that the DA is a resort masquerading as an eco resort facility. “Combined with that, what this community does not want to see is history repeating itself. “We have seen what has happened when a resort of this type has been tried, and it has failed; it has become a blight on the landscape for far too long for this beautiful community. “We want to stop this ridiculous

new proposal and we want this old development cleaned up and gone. “The connections are still a bit murky but if there is a connection between the old resort, and one of the part owners of the old resort is behind the push on the new resort. It is entirely unconscionable that they be allowed to progress a new resort whilst they are sitting on a derelict site and not cleaning it up; it is entirely immoral,” she said. Whilst Councillor Sarah Smith urged the community to “read the information that is available and to follow the process, and submit their concerns in writing through due process. It isn’t hard: have your opinion and have a reason and have your say,” she said.

Seven Day Makeover long awaited By Marian SAMPSON
THERE was a huge turnout from the community of Anna Bay to find out about the upcoming ‘Anna Bay 7 Day Make Over’. The actual makeover is scheduled from November 30 through the first week of December and aims to revitalise the township of Anna Bay. The community is being challenged to raise funds and give their time to ensure that the makeover is a success. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “There is $25,000 allocated towards materials for the project in the Council budget and we have also funded the engagement of Creative Communities, David Engwicht and his team.” The Anna Bay 7 Day Make

David Engwicht told News Of The Area, “If we get things like boats donated we like to have a look at them before we do the workshop, so we can see if it is something that can be used in the 7 Day Make Over.” He believes we will see an aesthetic which will emerge, the big transformations will be a welcome and some kind of a gateway statement for Anna Bay which will hopefully incorporate a photo opportunity.” q Councillor Sarah Smith and Glen Dunkley with Creative Four foundation Communities David Engwicht. to give the 7 Day Make Over projects continuity. “There has to be connection from the exit to the dunes to the centre of town; the Anna Bay 7 Day Makeover will be more concentrated than the Tuncurry project,” he said. He believes that there are two potential spaces which could be established as a civic heart for Anna Bay. The community is all incredibly inspired and can’t wait for the Makeover to start on 30 November. A representative of Anna Bay Next Wave said, “We would love all of Anna Bay, young
and old to get behind this Makeover and volunteer or donate, so we can create great public spaces for the community to enjoy as well as a record-breaking Makeover!” Of course you don’t have to live in Anna Bay to be part of the 7 Day Make Over. Leah Anderson, President of Tomaree Business Chamber, the driving force behind bringing the 7 Day Make Over to Port Stephens said “It is inspiring and encouraging and with the commitment from the community we are ensuring this makeover will be a
success. David believes this will be the biggest Makeover yet!”. While Council has contributed towards this Makeover with $25,000 for materials, there is a need for the community to donate both funds and materials that will help make the Makeover a success. The link for donations to the makeover https://chuffed.org/ project/7-day-makeover-annabay Creative Communities are looking for volunteers to participate, individuals and groups are welcome to participate.

Port’s Business Leaders Lunch By Marian SAMPSON
BUSINESS Leaders from around Port Stephens gathered at Murook Cultural Centre recently for Port Stephens Council’s latest Business Leaders Lunch. Murook Cultural Centre has been undergoing building works for quite some time and the resulting facility is already an impressive offering for the region. These lunches provide an opportunity for Council to connect with business and to update the business community on current projects and address current issues. At the October Business Leaders Lunch guests were treated with a presentation by award winning speaker Michael McQueen who challenged the group with being ready for what the future brings and addressing the changing market place. While he spoke of being ready for Gen Y to take over the lions’ share of spending he also reminded us that we are now entering the period where Gen X is coming of age.
for local training events. David also spoke about the need for plans to be enacted and agile, not simply creating a document. Mayor Palmer told News Of The Area, “Places are there for people, and we are looking forward to creating a great town centre for Anna Bay. “Robinson Reserve started in October, the koala sanctuary is scheduled to be completed by March and the current stage will be completed just after Christmas and the Medowie Sports Complex is on Schedule. “It was also great to see the opening of Apex Park and the inaugural Tomaree Arts Festival last week,” he said. This event saw the last of the Business Leaders Lunch Series for 2019.

The room was challenged by McQueen’s presentation taking them outside their comfort zone into a world of cars that will drive themselves and a space where artificial intelligence can measure the tones of the conversations which we have within our homes, ultimately being able to predict changes in marital status. Creative Communities David Engwicht spoke about the creative process involved in creating an active space and creating processes with Council which will allow the Anna Bay 7 Day Make Over to achieve great things for the community. Mayor Ryan Palmer spoke about Council’s current projects and recommended the new conference facility at Murook Cultural Centre

RENOVATE YOUR HOME OR YOUR INVESTMENT PROPERTY “I’d like to renovate my home, but I have an investment property that could use a facelift. Which is the better option? THERE’S a big difference between renovating your home and renovating your investment property. Your home is all about comfort and emotion; it’s your ‘nest’; your ‘castle’. Your investment property, while you want it to present in its best light in order to attract and then keep good tenants, realistically, it’s all about financial returns. The question is, who are you renovating for? If it’s your home and you plan to stay there for some years, then you’re renovating for yourself and assuming you’re talking about discretionary renovations as opposed to structural (re-stumping etc.), then you’re probably going to spend more. If it’s your investment property, your demographic is whoever you expect to purchase the property when you’re ready to sell. If this is the case then a modern bathroom, a contemporary kitchen and refreshed paint might be as far as you go because how much you do and spend will be determined by the dollar spent v your return equation. Ultimately renovating your home is generally a personal choice, while renovating your investment property is a strategic decision. Do your sums and read market trends to help inform your decision. REMEMBRANCE Day is an important day on the calendar for Australians. The end of the Great War, the war that was to end all wars, is commemorated on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. It is 101 years since the end of World War I during which over 16 million people died. For Australia, WWI remains the costliest conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. At the time we only had a population of less than five million people and 416,809 men enlisted. More than 60,000 people were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner during the war. One well recognised battleground of WWI for

Australia is Gallipoli, where the ANZAC legend was born. It is at this time where we take a minute’s silence to reflect. To consider those who have died in conflicts of the past, and those who are currently in service to their nation. The Nelson Bay Remembrance Day Service will be held at the newly reopened Apex Park in Nelson Bay. The Medowie RSL sub-Branch will hold their Remembrance Day commemoration service on 11 November 2019, commencing at 10.30am at Lions Memorial Park in Medowie. Councillor Doohan will be speaking at the Medowie service. Mr Vic Jones President of the Raymond Terrace RSL Sub Branch told News Of The Area, “We have our usual Remembrance Day Service commencing at 10.30am on 11 November at Anzac Park
Raymond Terrace.” “The Service this year will focus on remembering those who gave their lives for their country and to remember those who are still serving or have recently served, recognising their commitment to our Nation,” he said. The commemoration of the sacrifice of our service men and women will also be recognised throughout the schools of Port Stephens with Tomaree High School holding a ceremony at school at 11am on 11 November where, during a school assembly, the school captains will lay a wreath at the school’s Lone Pine Memorial. ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day are both important dates on the cultural calendar of Port Stephens where we are home to many active servicemen and women.

Dear Mr RPR, I’M going to let you into some secret women’s business. Women rue the day that they ever accepted shapewear into their lives. Shapewear, Mr RP, is the modern-day equivalent of a girdle or corset and it’s designed to pull any woman of any age into the shape they were when they were sixteen. Now, shapewear works, to a degree. It does indeed ‘pull you in’, but that excess has to go somewhere. I’m a visual person, Mr RP, so I want you to picture a pork sausage where the pork skin has retracted and there’s some gristle and filler and pork extender and a few secret herbs and spices spilling out one end. That’s what excess flab looks and feels like when it has squeezed out the top of shapewear and formed an entirely new body part just below the rib cage. God forbid someone tries to undress you when you are wearing shapewear. They will get far more than they bargained for (not in a good way, Mr RP, not in a good way). Lycra is the same sort of thing. It’s all about holding you in, and all those bits of yours will compress and spread in some pretty alarming configurations. It’s not pretty. There is an alternative. You can get Lycra bike shorts that have a chamois pad in the ‘saddle’ area, and while this may give you a few more inches of manhood, you’re also going to get a Nicki Minaj arse. Your choice. Then there’s the smell. Lycra is a synthetic material, so after your 40km ride, you’re going to smell like the aforementioned sausage after it’s been left in the car boot for a week. I’m just saying this because most Mamils (Middle Aged Men in Lycra) feel the need to stop at a local café after their Lycra ride. The rest of us just want to read the paper and eat some banana bread. We don’t want your smelly Lycra-clad genitals and belly overhang messing with our minds. There is never a time for middle-aged men to wear Lycra, Mr RP. Never. Be a real man, don’t shave your legs, wear your old ruggers and a ripped flanno shirt, get a mountain bike and show some god-damn dignity. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

ON Wednesday, I had the pleasure Created: A &of Battending Foley the Business Leaders Lunch out at the 12391 state-of-art Murrook Creator No: Cultural Centre. It was a full house and it was great to Qxpress: Gaynor see so many new faces from the Port Stephens business Noel community, as well asChecked: a lot of familiar ones. We were lucky enough to hear from Creative Community’s David Engwicht, who is in town for the information eventing for the much anticipated 7 Day Makeover – coming to Anna Bay from 30 November 2019. The info night was attended by over 100 and there’s already been such fantastic support from the Anna Bay community – I’m confident the Makeover is not only going to kick-start some amazing change for Anna Bay, but also inspire other communities in Port Stephens to work in partnership with Council in creating places for people. Our keynote speaker was the enigmatic Michael McQueen, trend forecaster, author and award-winning speaker. Michael spoke to us about disruption and how all of us – especially businesses – need to be prepared for inevitable change in order to survive. From the rise in automation, to increasing customer expectations and emerging generations, the threats to business are real and they’re coming fast. Here in Port Stephens we have a smart and supportive business community and Port Stephens Council is committed to supporting business and driving economic benefit through tourism and economic development. The winds of change may be coming fast but, as a community, I know we will weather them together and continue to thrive as one of the most vibrant and naturally beautiful places in Australia.

Compliance Coordinator Marc Goodall says it’s a good outcome for the community. “Port Stephens Council places a high priority on protecting the environment and responding to pollution events. “This conviction by the Local Court is a great win for Council and the community, and supports our approach to ensuring builders comply with the law,” he said. “This is a timely reminder to all builders in Port Stephens to act responsibly and protect the environment — or face the consequences. “If builders are not sure about their responsibilities under the environmental legislation, they can contact us here at Council,” he added. The building company has taken action to clean up the site and remedy the pollution events.

Star at Frocktober Event By Marian SAMPSON
FROCKTOBER was celebrated in a beautiful beachside bash at Soldiers Point and the funds raised all went to help the fight against ovarian cancer. Frocktober is a campaign that empowers women around Australia to tap into their creative flair by wearing their favourite frocks and raising money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. Maret Larnach Styling hosted the fundraising event to raise money for ovarian cancer research. There were a host of beautiful frocks on show as locals, visitors and the odd Married At First Sight (MAFS) star all got behind the cause. The NSW Cancer Council tells us that each year, about 1400 Australian women are diagnosed
with ovarian cancer. The average age at diagnosis for ovarian cancer is 63 and it is more commonly diagnosed in women over 50. Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women in Australia. Over 120 people attended the event held at Bay Beachbarn in Soldiers Point. The venue was donated by Rebecca Sorensen, along with donations of food, alcohol, plants, packaging, glasses, photography and time. Michael Gunner from Married At First Sight emceed the event, with informative talks from Dr Rebecca Moore and Councillor Jaimie Abbott. Over 40 raffle and auction

MEDOWIE Tennis Club recently finished upgrading one of their courts and were pleased to officially open it with their members and some special guests on Sunday 3 November. The Club received funding as part of the Community Building Partnership through Kate Washington’s office in the amount of $30,950, with them fundraising the additional amount to reach their goal of $35,200.

prizes were donated by businesses and individuals, with the biggest prize being 3 nights on Hamilton Island, donated by Luxury Accommodation. The end tally of money raised is $6080, with all proceeds going to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. Port Stephens Councillor Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, ‘It was amazing to see so many local Port Stephens businesses come together and donate prizes and supplies to make the event such a success. “I also learned so much about ovarian cancer which kills over 1000 Australian women every year. “Events like this which raise money for the cause means there can be more awareness and more resources can be funded for research into ovarian cancer,” she
said. Ovarian Cancer is difficult to diagnose, the symptoms are vague and in many cases, ovarian cancer is present for some time before it is diagnosed. The only signs may be cramps, bloating, feeling full or needing to urinate more often; all of which mimic typical womens complaints. Around 70% of women diagnosed will already be in the advanced stages of the disease and sadly only 25% will live for more than five years from diagnosis. It’s a bleak picture; one that hasn’t changed In 30 years. There is no standard screening test for all women for the disease. If you have symptoms please see your doctor.
Kate, who was present for the opening, told News Of The Area, “I’d like to congratulate the Medowie Tennis Club on their work to keep on offering such good facilities to the township.” The court, which has been re-surfaced with synthetic grass, is now of full championship size. Greg Lamborn, President of Medowie Tennis Club, told News Of The Area, “By having this new championship sized court we are hopeful we can attract some regional Port Stephens tournament finals to the Club.” The works, which were well overdue on the court
that hadn’t been upgraded for around 18 years, were completed by local company Raw Courts who are based in Medowie. Medowie Tennis Club currently has approximately 40 members and runs social competitions on Tuesdays morning for ladies and evening for mixed teams, along with having a ladies team in the intra-club competition held around the Port Stephens area. Sam Osborn also runs junior coaching on a Tuesday and Friday afternoon at the Club located behind the skate park on Ferodale Road.

Cricketers represent
Hunter Region By Ann SCULLY
THE NSW PSSA Schools State Cricket Carnival was held in Wollongong from 14 to 18 October 2019 and James McCarthy from Tea Gardens Public School and Thomas Long from Karuah Public School represented the Hunter Region Primary Schools at this carnival. Both boys had been selected earlier in the year when they trialled at Maitland against sixty-four other keen competitors for the twelve team spots to represent the Hunter Region at the PSSA titles. James and Thomas both play for the local cricket club, the Karuah Tea Gardens District Cricket Club in the Maitland District.
Col McCarthy, James dad, told News Of The Area, “These State titles drew players from private independent, catholic and state primary schools with the talent pool at the carnival being nothing short of outstanding with some of these boys heading onto state and international selection in the future.” “For such a small club we managed to have two players selected which was an amazing effort by both James and Thomas.” James was selected for his medium fast bowling and Thomas as a leg spin bowler for the Hunter team with both boys playing in the four games held during the course of the carnival, acquitting themselves CONTINUED Page 13
