107 Years Young By Marian SAMPSON

CYRIL Blowes wasn’t practicing social distancing with his wife when he quietly celebrated his 107th Birthday at Shoal Bay this week. At 107 years young Cyril

is still going strong. Cyril is still a member of the Probus Club of Port Stephens and this year was the first in many when Club members weren’t able to drop by and share their well wishes. David Heath of the Probus Club of Port Stephens told

Art Group continue project in isolation

q Before social distancing was required and the Centre shut for classes and workshops crafters: Di Adamson, Sheila Francis and Kim Withers working on Flotsam and Jetsam.

By Marian SAMPSON THE Port Stephens Community Arts Centre usually sees members come together to create. COVID-19 and Social Distancing has seen the Fusion Group complete their work together online. The Fusion group began working on a collective project for our Community Art Centre entitled Flotsam and Jetsam. Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “The task was to use 5cm squares of felt; in blue / green hues, add embellishments with threads, yarns, fabrics and found objects. The work could be done by the crafters by hand or machine. “There were no restrictions on what the finished piece can look like. Participants were just encouraged to take it as far as their imagination would take them.” Eventually these squares will be assembled to make one large display installation. “The final description is being kept under wraps – partly to create suspense and interest, but also, as with most Fusion concepts, the finished product often evolves throughout the process of construction. “Having a group of creative people working together, it’s often surprising how one idea can spark a different inspiration in another person’s mind,” she said. While continuing to create in isolation the Centre’s Fusion group is keeping the following motivational thoughts in mind. When the work is complete none of the

contributing members will own it, yet it will be available to all. As with many collaborative works it can be viewed as a whole each piece in the work will be seen as a story waiting to be told. The phrase flotsam and jetsam was originally used to describe things that were washed onto the shore from the

sea. Because of the current enforced isolation limits, the crafters are all diligently working at home at present. They are looking forward to the time that we can once again congregate at the Art Centre, and begin assembling this work.

Cyril Blowes from Shoal Bay Hits 107 Not Out FROM Page 1

Cyril was a still a child when Model T Ford rolled off production lines in 1927. He was around In 1928 when Kingsford Smith made the first transpacific flight from the United States to Australia. He’s now seen a ban on all travel from Australia.

He lived through the Great Depression in the 1930’s and World War II from 1939-1945. He’s seen war a plenty with Malaysia, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. He’s also lived in the lucky country where wars seldom touch us, a land of plenty where mateship is a part of our DNA.

“Today we battle Corona Virus, but for Cyril this is just another event in his 107 years, that if committed to paper would cover volumes of happenings and events and much happiness with his wife Patti,” he said. Cyril and Patti are safe and happy at Harbourside Haven in Shoal Bay and live with their

memories of their association with the Probus Club of Port Stephens which has spanned a mere 40 odd years. Cyril is a titled Prince of Probus a title bestowed on him when he made his century. Cyril’s mates, and the Probus Club members and their partners all wish Cyril and Patti continued happiness and longevity.

Bin Outings Provide Comical Relief for people at home By Julie MCKIMM A NEW Facebook page has been created to keep all of us who are in lockdown, quarantine or isolating a bit entertained. The page, titled Bin Isolation Outing, has reached over 140,000 members in just over a week, including many members participating from the Port Stephens area. The idea is that as it appears our bins may be “going out” more than ourselves, why not dress-up and entertain the neighbours and Facebook to do so. This has seen lots of super heroes, ballet dancers, clowns, dinosaurs and countless other characters take the bins to the kerb. One such local, Emma Gordon, told News Of The Area “With the amount my child eats now that we’re home, we needed Hulk to carry it out.” The page has attracted interest from many countries around the world and it seems there is a bit of jealousy over Australia’s style and size of bins. One member from the USA posted, “It’s my birthday, and I must admit that I was feeling blue, but this site definitely helps the spirits. Is it wrong that I’m jealous of your rolling bins, because all I have is a regular old trash can?” Everyone is feeling the pain of isolation at the moment, but how we deal with it is also different from person to person. Sometimes a bit of online comedy can certainly ease the pain and pass the time.

Call for Visitors to Stay Away FROM Page 1

Hazzard stated, “Some people are not heeding the message, not to travel. The fact that on the north coast, central coast and south coast we are seeing large numbers of people coming into those areas, five days out from Easter, the Easter vacation is quite appalling. “I know Aussies like to thumb their noses at authority, but on this occasion I would ask you to not thumb your nose because the messages we are giving you are about keeping you alive, keeping your family alive, keeping your friends alive and making sure the community stays safe. “If you have headed off for a sneaky little holiday, my message to you is go home… you have been told very clearly why you should be home… don’t take a sneaky holiday, don’t put everybody at risk,” he said. Police have visited holiday businesses in Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest ensuring that holiday booking businesses are cancelling bookings

and turning visitors away. Port Stephens and the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest communities are the place where Australia’s Grandparents chose to live. We have the highest mean age in New South Wales and we have residents here who are literally living treasures. These people have paid their dues – many are pensioners and some self-funded retirees. There are businesses struggling to keep the doors open and others devastated that they have had to close their doors. Many in our community are for the first time ever faced with the need to apply to Centrelink for help. We are not unique in these challenges, they are faced by small communities across the State. Action to prevent visitation in holiday hot spots like Port Stephens is important. It is based on two aspects, one that the visitors will bring the virus with them, creating an environment

which increases the risk of catching COVID-19 and secondly, the fact that our health services simply are not capable of providing enough beds for residents let alone a visiting population if the pandemic takes hold. Fortunately a new Order by NSW Health has restricted visitors to our region. Going on holidays is now listed as non-essential travel. This change gives our vulnerable elderly residents protection from this virus. A State Government Mandate has also seen the Council close caravan parks. While both the State and Federal Governments are working to find more ventilators we are still at risk. Port Stephens Tomaree Community Hospital is not equipped to deal with ICU cases and never has been – that means that the majority of cases that arrive at the Community Hospital are shipped via ambulance to John Hunter Hospital; a one hour road journey that monopolises our ambulance.

There are no ICU beds here. Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, I wrote to the minister saying, “These are exceptionally difficult times and for a tourist area to turn tourists away is ordinarily unfathomable. “The current public health crisis demands strong action and my priority lies in protecting the vulnerable community I represent.” Ms Washington like many in the community is thankful that holidaymaking in our region is now off the table. “This week, the Prime Minister, the Premier, the local Police and the Public Health Orders have made it very clear - no-one is to holiday in Port Stephens during this crisis. “We need to protect our vulnerable residents and ensure our local hospitals aren’t overwhelmed by an influx of tourists. “With the laws we needed now in place, our Police are trying to ensure everyone understands the changes. They are big changes and it’s a

ALL Port Stephens Council green waste and mattress and tyre drop-off days are cancelled until further notice. A statement issued from Port Stephens Council said, “As we continue to help limit the spread of COVID-19 in Port Stephens and follow Australian

IN 2014 Greg Mutton retired, but since has written not one but two books -now released his second book. Mr Mutton joined the local Fellowship of Australian Writers where he found the mentoring and camaraderie helped him develop his love of telling a good story. And now the stories just keep coming! He released Book 1, Reunion, from his first series Chronicle of the 12th Realm, in June 2019. Now Book 2 in the series,

Sedition Rising, was released this month with Book 3 scheduled for July this year. Greg shares some insight into this series with the NOTA. Mr Mutton told News Of The Area, “Most of my books have an Australian base and for my series ‘Chronicle of the 12th Realm’ it’s Lucknow, an old gold mining town near Orange.” “This is the home, and corporate headquarters, for the Abraham family, an industrial and agricultural dynasty. I’ve also done a

I’ve added some literary license and created one reason for the wealth of the family,” he said. Book 1, Reunion, lays the foundation for the series; Earth is no longer the centre of the universe and humans are scattered across

MAKING THE MOST OF A TOUGH SITUATION “I seem to be losing my ability to think clearly! I am looking to sell in the next month or two. Any advice on how I can make the most of the difficult time?” WITH so much going on, it’s difficult to focus on things that are not immediate, but you do have some time on your side. This means you have excellent opportunities to prepare your property. You don’t mention whether you are working, ‘taking a break from work’, or retired so I’m not sure whether finances are an issue, but whatever your situation, you can make great gains without spending money. Declutter your home, inside and out; clean everything!; touch up paint; clean windows; dust down and cobweb your exterior. Review your garden. Remove rubbish, trim trees and bushes and check your paths are clear and safe. Make notes of everything you think may need a tradie for – repair/replace weatherboards, gutters etc. and when possible, seek quotes. That way you can determine how much you might need to spend, and prioritise what you do, especially if cash is tight. This is a difficult time, there is no doubt. Dear Mrs BH,

Stabbing at Fingal A man has been charged over an alleged stabbing at Port Stephens over the weekend.

JUST before 2.20am (Sunday 5 April 2020), emergency services were called to a house on Shoreline Drive, Fingal Bay, after reports of an assault. Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District arrived to find a 27-year-old man suffering multiple stab wounds to his back. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a stable condition following surgery. A 28-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station.

A crime scene was established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident commenced. Following inquiries, the older man was charged with wounding a person, intending to cause grievous bodily harm (DV) and affray. Police will allege in court that the two men – who are known to each other – were fighting, before the younger man was stabbed in the lower back. The man was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court via AVL on Monday 6 April 2020.

At the risk of being sued by the Education Department, I think now is the time to teach them skills for the new world. You know, the one they will have to negotiate when this is all over. Kids are pretty intuitive, but I don’t think even the most creative of them could have imagined that a virus, (probably started by a bat in a wet market in Wuhan – a theory disputed, of course, by the New Age gang who think it is all linked to 5G and we are about to be microchipped by Bill Gates and his able assistant, Madonna) would have ended up with them spending every waking moment with their siblings, washing their hands fifteen times a day, unable to see their friends, and having to teach their parents how to navigate Zoom and Microsoft Teams. In our home, our daughter is doing her HSC and she has an excellent online system where she attends her normal classes and has regular meetings with teachers. In between classes, she practices for her driver’s licence, driving us to the local shop for more chocolate (at the moment, we regard this as essential travel). My son, on the other hand, has been given a sheet where he can do a range of tasks that respond to different learning styles. His learning style is Prime Ministerial in nature – he has a knack of choosing whichever task involves other people (us) doing a whole lot of researching and backgrounding, or else activities that disrupt the workplace (our home). One such activity was to do an interpretive dance mirroring the growth of a spinach plant. That one broke us. My husband has since implemented a new curriculum of practical skills for him: Catch a fish; Learn how to do Internet banking; Learn to tie a range of rope knots; Get boat licence; Learn to drive the Landcruiser; Weigh and tare products; Use the ride-on and whipper snipper weekly; Make the perfect coffee . . . and so on. In the scheme of things, I think these skills are going to have far more relevance. Another alternative is to just get your kids to keep a daily journal. After we all get through this, no child will be short of material for any creative writing task for the rest of their schooling, in fact the rest of their life. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Academy Assisting Community “Our goal is to keep our men engaged and to continue with their school work.”

By Julie MCKIMM

Mayor update for Port WHEN writing my last column, COVID-19 (coronavirus) had not yet taken hold of our region in the way it has done now. Nothing could’ve prepared us for the crisis we’re currently facing in this country and in Port Stephens, and it will likely continue this way for many months to come. COVID-19 has been unprecedented and its effects on people’s health, businesses, local workers, industry and communities will leave a lasting impact. As always, the wellbeing of our community and staff remains our highest priority. To help limit the spread of COVID-19, we’ve made some tough decisions in line with the Government’s new measures to support social distancing and to discourage nonessential travel and vacationers from visiting our region. I know these measures may seem tough to some, but if we change the rules for locals it will send the wrong message to the majority. Our local tourism and business communities, and the local workers who have been impacted, are feeling COVID-19’s widespread effects especially hard. In response, we have created the Port Stephens Business Support Service — an allocation of resources to ensure businesses can talk directly to someone who can help them find the right information they need to help them through this crisis. Work is also underway to prepare for our region’s recovery from this crisis. We are working in close partnership with Destination Port Stephens on a plan to restart Port Stephens – when the time is right – and bring visitors back and to reinvigorate our local economy. I am more motivated by the spirit of the Port Stephens community every day — the way we band together in times of crises is inspiring. We’ve recently launched the Port Stephens Kindness Project which showcases amazing stories of people coming together and captures great ideas for how we can stay connected and stay strong. Please keep up to date on the services we’re continuing to deliver for Port Stephens during this challenging time, by visiting portstephens.nsw.gov. au/covid19. Together, Port Stephens, we’ve got this. Wishing you safety and good health, By Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer

FOR the past couple of weeks Irrawang High School’s Clontarf Academy has been out and about delivering hard copy work booklets to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys and their families’ homes. The work booklets were put together by the school’s hard working teachers and staff so that the students who may not have access to the internet or have several children in the household making it hard for all kids to be

online at the one time. In having the work booklets it will ensure they continue their schooling from home. Academy Director, Cliff Sampson, told News Of The Area, “Our goal is to keep our men engaged and to continue with their school work.” “We have been trying to stay in touch with as many boys as we can with phone calls, dropping by their homes but keeping our distance and also via social media by setting up some fun challenges.”

He added, “A majority of the boys are in high spirits and have been doing the right thing by completing their school work from home which is great to see.” The Academies staff Cliff Sampson and Luke Stahlhut have

also dropped off several boxes of cereal for some of the families to try and help in some small way during these tough times. Great to see the commitment that the Academy has in ensuring the boy’s education is continuing.

OPINION

Boomerang by Helen Yates Let’s Lighten Up A Little Dear News Of The Area,

q Helen Yates.

Dear News Of The Area, A peom to share: I wanna marry an Aussie bloke when I get hitched again, I’ll hunt him down like a kangaroo and I’ll throw me boomerang, I’ll hide behind the bushes to see if I’ve a catch, And if he’s on the ground mate, I got the perfect match. I’ll have to knock him brainless, so he knows just who’s the boss, And stuff him in me dilly bag and check out what I’ve got. A blondie headed surfie or a tan skinned jackaroo, Maybe a true blue curly who plays the didgeridoo. I don’t care as long’s he’s mine and in his place he’ll stay Cause I’ve always got me boomerang if he decides to stray. So if you’re on the make, mate, be watching from behind And if ya hear a whirring sound, RUN! Or you’ll be mine. I’ll be hiding in the bushes just like I said I’d be And you’ll be on the ground mate, or up the nearest tree. Helen Yates

WARNING: Do not attempt to demonstrate the absurdity of the anti-vaxers pontifications by consuming bat soup from a Chinese wet market with chopsticks, nor should you use unsterilized chopsticks from a COVID19 Intensive Care Unit. Meanwhile, I am filling in time watching and re watching replays of ‘Rocky’, but cannot get the same answer each time, on how many blows he takes to the head in his first Rocky movie. Something more useful from an exercise perspective, has been my efforts to upskill my jazz waltz capability with a laundry mop, god the mops starting to look good!

OH hell, my first eight days of an indeterminate home detention with minimal out of habitat release for critical life support needs, commenced on the 1st April with a practical joke by a friend phoning to say she had left a carton of VB at the door for me. She had, they were empties! Today, the eighth, we’ll have a full moon and wedged in between on Friday, an ‘anti-vaxer’ was howling from the pulpit of parochial pandemonium magnification that “you can’t catch a virus”. Well no doubting what movie he’s been watching in isolation confinement… ‘The Karate Kid’. Bob Macklinshaw As you know in that movie the Kids’ coach is of Chinese origin and despite endeavoring endlessly, to catch a fly with chopsticks, he was unable to do so. So, it stands the test of possible conclusion that catching a Chinese virus with chopsticks might also be a futile pursuit. q Bob Macklinshaw.

Library and Leisure Centres are Adapting Port Stephens Council’s Library and Leisure Centres are adapting in the face of the Coronavirus

ONLINE story time and workout videos are two of the ways Port Stephens Council’s Library and Leisure Centres are adapting in the face of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) to help keep the community connected. Port Stephens Council Community Services Section Manager Tammy Gutsche says while it’s a challenging time for our community who now find themselves at home, a number of services are diversifying thanks to the internet. “Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Libraries and Leisure Centres across Australia are closed but now our residents will be able to access these services from the comfort of their home,” she said. “Children’s Story Time and Read and Rhyme sessions will be filmed and shared on social media over the coming weeks. “Sharing Story Time online will help provide some positive entertainment and perhaps even brighten the lives of our younger residents during this time.

“I’m sure the regulars at our children’s programs will be happy to see some familiar library faces on their screens,”

she said. “Members of our Aquatic and Leisure Centres will also be able to access online resources

thanks to our partnership with Belgravia Leisure,” she added. “Workout videos created by fitness professionals will

help members who use our Centres to stay healthy from the comfort of their own homes. “We know this is a challenging time for our community, and we’re doing all we can to help our residents

stay well and keep a positive outlook through all of this.” Members of our Lakeside, Tilligerry and Tomaree Centres will be able to access the online resources free of charge by contacting Belgravia Leisure support to gain access.

Building On Weekends and Public Holidays

By Marian SAMPSON

THERE have been many changes in the workplace and building and construction sites are now subject to some new rules due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If there is building happening in your neighbourhood be it Port Stephens or the Myall Coast, you need to know about these changes. The Housing Industry Association (NSW) has welcomed the announcement by Planning & Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes which brings in new rules to allow construction sites to operate on weekends and public holidays during the COVID-19 pandemic.

David Bare, Executive Director of HIA NSW said, “Recently HIA has put forward the proposition that building sites should be allowed to operate on weekends and public holidays during the COVID-19 outbreak. This is positive news for those working in construction and for those waiting for homes to be built. It also has the potential to ease the financial burden of mortgage holders. Leah Anderson of Leah Anderson and Associates said, “It is pleasing to hear that the announcement by Minister Stokes supporting changes to the building industry rules to allow construction under these

guidelines to support the building industry. “Interest rates are at an all time low and some families are still in a comfortable financial position to be able to borrow right now.

“This will help keep industry to continue and help support the economy in this challenging time,” she said.

It may be less welcome to those living next door to

construction sites. “This was to support our builders and tradespeople to implement the HIA Making Space on Site guidelines and maintain efficiencies on site,” Mr Bare said. “We are pleased that the NSW Government has taken up this recommendation as a way of supporting the building industry through this difficult time. “We are confident that HIA members can carry out their work in a manner that protects both those on site and their clients. “The extended hours allow the industry to minimise the potential for lost productivity during the pandemic, and will in turn support the economy of NSW.” With the construction and development sectors, making up 10 percent of NSW’s economy, it is vital that it experiences the least disruption possible to ensure

Public Health Order in place for the Coronavirus surfing is still permissible whilst maintaining distancing measures and this has seen a calm fall over the lineups. Local lensman Dane Loomes has been capturing some solitary sessions at a number of well known wave magnets and reports that local surfers are adhering to the safety sanctions. “It’s been really peaceful and a real sense of community has fallen over the breaks around town,” said Mr Loomes. “Everyone is looking out for each other and I think surfing has been a real escape from the harsh realities of the

staff, suppliers, contractors and clients. “Trades are being asked to work separately on sites to reduce contact between them and other trade teams. For example, we don’t encourage carpenters, bricklayers, roofers or other trades to work on the same site at the same time. “This tends to slow down construction and NSW Minister Rob Stokes’ decision to allow construction sites to operate for longer hours during the COVID-19 pandemic is welcomed. “All involved in the Building Industry work on narrow margins and the ability to work different hours helps everyone remain employed and gives flexibility in allowing houses to be completely safely on a timely basis,” he said. Valley Homes is one of many builders working in Port Stephens.

pandemic at the moment.” The stemming of the tourist flow has also seen less pollution around the beaches and headlands as Mother Nature breathes easy for the time being. Joshua Purnell, local surfer and brick technician, said whilst the threat of the pandemic is one of real concern the local environment has never been cleaner. “It’s been 20 plus years since the region has had a break like this from the influx of travelers,” said Mr Purnell. “It’s terrible the effect the health crisis is having on people and businesses but at the same time the coastline seems to be thriving. “The tourists will be back eventually but for now it’s a welcomed reprieve.”

practicing their running, ball skills, circle work and sprints. In between workouts and from far away, NOTA interviewed the three young sports stars. Malakai, the youngest, shared, “I miss running around and kicking goals with my team but I am still training hard in the backyard and in the local park.” Saskia advised NOTA that, “I don’t get to play with my friends but I am training with my brothers which is funny but OK.” The eldest, Kodee, stated, “We all get outside in the park

Ian Barnard told News Of The Area, “It’s not just golf, the Government has opened up golf, tennis and fishing. “It is not just that it is OK to play golf, they are encouraging people to play golf.” He believes that one of the big issues facing the community is how do you manage a population that has been locked up for six months. “The hole cups are now upside down so you don’t make contact with the cup removing

the ball.” Ian has been fielding questions around social distancing and the new rules that are in place to protect members and the wider community. Some married couples were disappointed that they can no longer share a cart, and members are taking this with good humour. But as Ian Barnard told News Of The Area, the social distancing rules are based on two clear principles which will keep all members apart

The NSW Government has issued guidelines supporting how people can go outside to exercise safely. Allowed outside exercises include walking in family groups and/or pairs, bike riding, tennis, golf, fishing and surfing. Note outdoor playgrounds are closed, as are public BBQ
