THE Carols At The Bay was held at Fly Point Park, Nelson Bay on December 11.

The event was proudly sponsored by First National Real Estate Port Stephens and was brought to the community by the Combined Churches of Tomaree Peninsula.

The crowds on the night well exceeded previous years, with more than 7,000 in attendance.

“I love that there are a lot of songs of faith tonight,” Cheryl White, a local Mum of two told News of The Area.

“My 85-year-old Nanna and my sixyear-old daughter were dancing together most of the night.

“It was so wonderful to see both CONTINUED Page 3

Carols Under The Stars

THE Anna Bay ‘Carols Under The Stars’ is excited to be back after a two-year break with a 21st century re-enactment of the Christmas story combined with everyone’s favourite Christmas Carols.

This year’s event will feature the

very popular camel rides, face painting, and other kid’s activities.

The Carols and Nativity Play include real camels, donkeys and

sheep.

Festivities begin on Sunday 18 December 2022 from 5.30pm with the highlight of the evening, the Carols and

there are now large steps preventing any disability access to the space.

Local walker Margaret Wilkinson told News Of The Area, “I, and many others, can no longer use this space for regular walking because of the perilous safety conditions along that stretch.

“Because of this too, young Mums with prams have to negotiate cars parked on the side of Sandy Point Road,” she said.

It is understood that there is also interest from NSW Marine Parks (DPI) on the works.

Council has advised that the matter is under investigation.

At this stage Council does not have a plan or time frame for any remediation and refrained from making any further comment.

Nativity Play, beginning at 7.30pm.

generations bonding through these beautiful old carols,” Ms White said.

The evening began at 5.30 pm where local primary schools, high schools, performing arts students, dance studios, and community groups entertained the crowd.

8pm saw some great favourites sang with impressive performances by all those who graced the stage.

“Tonight was incredible with the community artists all being amazing,” Chris Klum, Campus Pastor at Hope Unlimited Church told News Of The Area.

Hope Unlimited Church's Jess Bruce and Chris Klum compèred the evening with an exquisite lineup of local talent.

“Thank you so much to the community for coming out to support the Carols and we look forward to hosting next year's carols making it bigger and even better,” Pastor Klum said.

The program was full to the brim with traditional carols, with some old crooner tunes thrown in to make the older residents smile.

The fun festive songs culminated with a visit from Santa, accompanied by NSW Rural Fire Service members and his helpers.

The night came to a close after a spectacular fireworks finale with many lining the Fly Point foreshore for a perfect view.

Best ever for Medowie Christmas Carnival

THE return of the Medowie Christmas Carnival saw thousands upon thousands in attendance at Ferodale Sports Complex last Saturday.

The event, which was put on hold like many events over the last few years, has been hailed its best ever by locals in attendance.

So much was on offer including rides, stalls, performances on stage, visit from Santa, and the popular singing of Carols at the end.

Organisers have been duly praised for their efforts and are already talking about the event in 2023 for the community.

Message from Meryl

I really love this time of year because I am usually attending schools to present awards A big congratulations to all school leavers and their parents this year, and a reminder it has never been a better time to choose a TAFE course. Labor has created 120,000 fee-free TAFE places for 2023 It is such an honour to attend your end-ofyear assemblies, meet you and hear about the achievements that you have been getting throughout your schooling When I visit our schools I can see that the Hunter has an exciting future because the youth of our region are ambitious, dedicated and achieving incredible things already

Apart from that, over the last few weeks I have been busy at Parliament where Labor has delivered some more of their electoral promises Besides the fee-free TAFE, we have made Paid Parental Leave six months, giving parents precious time with their new babies and ensuring their careers do not suffer while they engage in the important work of the first year of their child’s life

And when those babies are ready for school, their schools will be better off due to the Schools Upgrade fund we have also approved. This will enable your children's school to have better infrastructure

Labor’s Nature Positive Plan welcomed by environmentalists

THE Federal Government last week formally responded to the Samuel Report, announcing a broad overhauling of our national environmental laws with the release of its ‘Nature Positive Plan’.

The response includes the announcement of a new national Environmental Protection Agency that will have powers to reject development proposals on biodiversity grounds.

Minister for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek said the Nature Positive Plan is a “win-win: a win for the environment and a win for business”.

Ms Plibersek said the Plan delivers stronger laws designed to repair nature, to protect precious plants, animals and places.

“For the first time, our laws will introduce standards that decisions must meet. Standards describe the environmental outcomes we want to achieve.

“This will ensure decisions made will protect our threatened species and ecosystems.”

Greens NSW spokesperson for the environment, Sue Higginson said the plan was a welcome “first step from the Federal Government in slowing down the extinction crisis”.

“For too long we have been worsening the extinction crisis with no real measures in place to protect our rapidly declining native species

and ecosystems.

“The introduction of national standards and greater engagement with First Nations people is very long overdue.

“The traffic light system that has been announced is an important approach which acknowledges that some things simply can not be harmed, but we need to see the settings.”

Ms Higginson also welcomed the announcement of tightening of logging regulations, but said the plan should have gone further.

“Currently there is no Federal oversight of logging whatsoever.

“Today should have indicated that public native forest logging will be ruled out altogether.”

Concerns were raised however over the federal offset scheme, which Ms Higginson said was “set to allow developers to pay into a fund rather than requiring a genuine like for like offset”.

“This is shaky ground when it comes to genuinely protecting and improving biodiversity.

“We have seen the results of this in NSW, with millions of dollars sitting in a fund and the biodiversity not being available to offset the destruction, pushing more species towards extinction and ecosystems to collapse.

“If the Federal Government is going to take this approach they need to learn from the failure of the NSW scheme and establish strict rules that will improve environmental outcomes in real terms.”

Business Council of Australia President Tim Reed said, “Business

welcomes the government's commitment to implementing recommendations of the Samuel Review of our environmental protection laws but we'll need to work closely together to avoid creating more complexity.

"Big reform is hard, so we appreciate the government's willingness to design these changes through a consultative process that gives us the opportunity to work through the detail.

“Complexity makes project approvals too slow and a lack of clear accountability means we're not getting the best environmental results, we need a win-win system.”

Greenpeace Australia Head of Advocacy and Strategy, Glenn Walker said, “The reforms outlined are a very welcome and long-overdue step to better protecting Australia’s extraordinary wildlife, forests and natural environment.

“The reforms announced today present a major opportunity to set Australia on a path to stronger environmental protection and should bring hope to all Australians.

“We congratulate the Minister for showing leadership on this critical issue.”

Jazzy’s

LAST Sunday night, 4 December, saw over 250 people in attendance at Soldiers Point Bowling Club to show their support for 22-year-old local young mum Jasmine, who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in September.

Mother to Lincoln, aged three, and Luella, six months, Jasmine has shown incredible determination and fight since her devastating diagnosis.

Facing the fight of her life, Jasmin is going to need all the strength, love and support of her family, friends and the wonderful Port Stephens community as her journey progresses.

The event organising committee, a very energetic group of ladies led by Helen Bear and Lyn Manwarring, helped canvas the local community for donations of raffle prizes and auction items.

Many personal donations were offered as well.

“The 250 tickets were sold out in just five days which goes to show how supportive the local community here in The Bay is for one of their own,” said Helen Bear.

“The Soldiers Point Bowling Club donated the rooms and the function Coordinator Emily Nichols did an amazing job in

organising this event and making sure everything ran smoothly on the night and needs to be commended for going above and beyond in her role with the Club.

“It was hats off also to Lesley at Taylor’s Bistro at Soldiers Point, as she donated all the meals which was a very commendable and a sizable donation which certainly contributed to the overall success of the night.

“Beautiful Occasions

donated the setting up of the tables and the flowers, while Party Pixie donated the impressive signage for the stage,” Helen said.

“The night was compèred by local marriage celebrant Sarah Chippendale who delivered a very heartfelt night along with the support of Danny for the auction.”

Guest speaker Sarah Smith from the local Breast Cancer Support Group addressed the audience,

explaining what the group did and how they support local women in Port Stephens.

Jasmin’s mum, Sonya Hestelow, gave a very detailed and emotional speech into Jazzy’s journey to date which was followed by a very touching speech by Jasmin herself.

“Jasmin’s family had their own little quest in raising awareness for breast cancer, with each family member's name put into a hat,” Helen said.

“Her aunt Michelle’s name came out and Jazzy then shaved her hair off.

“A bucket was passed around whilst this was being done and raised over $1,000 to the Children’s Oncology unit,” Helen said.

A short video was also played showing some of Jazzy’s cancer journey to date.

The music entertainment on the night was offered

Earrings and accessories supplied by Trudie Blachford from Bay Gifts were available for purchase on the night with 50 percent of the sales donated to Jazzy’s Journey.

Family Separation at Christmas

FAMILIES journeying through separation or divorce can find Christmas very challenging.

Family separation encompasses feelings of bereavement, grief, loss, shock and disbelief.

It is so important to seek a good co-parenting relationship with the other parent in order to minimise the emotional impact on the children during the upcoming holiday season.

The impact of separation can cause the children to grieve and feel the loss of the security of their parents with research showing that the negative impact of separation and divorce on children can be reduced and contained if the parents work together in the best interests of the children.

“As a local solicitor

who practices in family law proceedings I see vulnerable people across my desk every single day,” Medowie solicitor Brooke Vitnell told News Of The Area.

"Relationship breakdowns, exacerbated by experiences with the family law system and other legal proceedings have been identified as major trigger factors for suicide for both men and women," Brooke Vitnell said.

Last year someone may have had their entire family around the Christmas table and this year they face a Christmas alone for the first time and are also being told they can’t see their children.

“There are people in our community today who think of taking their life because of parental alienation, separation and the toll of

family law proceedings,” Ms Vitnell stated.

If you have a neighbour or a friend who you know is going through a separation and divorce it is important to reach out to them over the Christmas and New Year season.

If you’re going through family separation yourself, please make sure you connect with friends and family, it is important for you to not be alone this Christmas.

Christmas lights on display at Bower Estate

IT’S time to take the family for a drive to some of the amazing streets across Port Stephens in order to witness a spectacular array of light displays adorning peoples homes.

Once such display is located at the home of Trevor Wimmer in Medowie’s Bower Estate at 38 Carolina Road, Medowie.

Mr Wimmer and his family have been residents of Medowie since 2010.

Trevor has been displaying Christmas lights on his home for the local community since 2019 and each year he is adding more and more to his collection.

A unique part of Mr Wimmer’s display is that the light display is interactive with a push button for listening to music whilst you admire the display of lights.

“Pushing the reindeer's

nose activates the speakers to hear music and those who want to remain in their cars to view the lights, can tune their radios to 88.5 FM to hear a wide array of music,” Mr Wimmer told News Of The Area.

”I am raising funds for Angel Flight Australia, a charity which coordinates non-emergency flights to assist country people to access specialist medical treatment that would otherwise be unavailable to them because of the vast distance and high travel costs,” he said.

You can either make cash donations at Mr Wimmer’s lights display itself or alternatively, you can go to the Angel Flight Australia website and mark your donation as ‘Medowie Lights’.

The Bower Estate has a number of homes who have a light spectacular set up on their homes so be sure to take

a look at them all while you are there.

It is strongly recommended to park your car in a nearby side street

to walk past the dazzling houses.

This way, everyone can soak up the festive atmosphere.

Don’t forget to take comfortable walking shoes, and a jumper in case it gets chilly.

The Keeper of the Christmas Trees

LEMON Tree Passage is renowned for its Christmas Bushes.

This native tree (Ceratopetalum gummiferum) blossoms in late November and the flowers then turn bright red around Christmas. This year, due to weather conditions, it looks like being a very big year for them.

Roadside flower sellers often knock on doors offering the owners of the trees money for bunches as it is traditional to use them as a decoration during the festive season.

On the other hand, the beautiful Christmas Bells (Blandfordia grandiflora) which also grow locally are strictly off limits.

The only ones able to be sold must be commercially

grown and come with a certification tag.

Crawley Ave, Lemon Tree Passage is something of an epicentre for the trees and there is a reason for this.

A certain Lewis Crawley was, for 33 years, the caretaker of Tanilba House and assisted in carting stone for the construction of 'The Temple' and other decorative

q A Christmas Bell in flower at Tanilba Bay.

features around the historic homestead.

He moved to the area and took up some 40 acres behind 'The Gibbers' on Tilligerry Creek.

He was determined to preserve the bushes.

Bushfires were a menace and, believe it or not, he solved the problem with pigs.

After fencing the property

he bought some and they fed on the bracken ferns thus keeping fires to a low intensity.

He, and later his son,

became rangers and for 25 years protected the trees.

He was known locally as 'The Keeper of the Christmas Trees' and the street where

he lived was named to honour his memory.

More details of Lewis Crawley and his life and times can be found in the recently published 'History of Tanilba House' (2019).

Carols In The Park

IT is the time of year when community gathers and connects.

This year a very special Carols event will be held in the park at 109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay on 17 December from 1-5 pm.

The Port Stephens Community Band will be playing and there will be a sausage sizzle which will raise funds for the band.

This is an opportunity to connect with locals and meet new friends.

Everyone is welcome and attendees are encouraged to bring a rug, chairs and whatever else you would like for a lovely casual afternoon on the waterfront.

Kids and adults alike may choose to push the boat or kayak out for a paddle, or simply take a dip in the crystal clear waters accessible directly from the park.

There is plenty of off street parking either on the corner of the Mambo Wetlands or in front of the park itself.

109 Foreshore Drive is a koala corridor so visitors to the site may be lucky enough to spot one of our furry locals at the event.

If you have been wondering why locals are opposing the sale of this block of land, popping into the Carols on 17 December is a perfect opportunity to see why some consider it an important public asset.

SANTA has already appeared out Tilligerry way when he turned up on the back of the fire truck at the recent

The good news is that

NOTA vows to support community amidst possible Examiner closure

light of news that the Port Stephens Examiner may be facing an imminent closure,

The Area director Michael Wright is reassuring concerned community members that the region will not be left without a voice.

“Newspapers are so important to our communities, in more ways than most people would understand,” said Mr Wright.

“Having seen the front page of the Examiner last week, it is very sad to see the position the paper is in.

“It's undoubtedly sad whenever any business struggles so much that they are faced with closing.”

Having served the community since 1893, the loss of the Port Stephens Examiner would certainly be a loss to the community, however Mr Wright has committed to building and expanding Port Stephens News Of The Area to fill the gap.

“Should the Examiner close, I personally want to publicly give the whole of Port Stephens my word that I will be doing much more with Port Stephens NOTA to increase its pages, improve the depth of news content, and offer a better voice for the community than Port Stephens has had for many many years.

“We will be here for you, Port Stephens.”

Thursday’s Examiner front page calls for support from “government, business and the community”, saying the paper faces having to “stop printing in a matter of weeks”.

Since this announcement, sources within the Examiner have indicated that the paper is likely to keep printing into 2023.

Mr Wright, who was the General Manager at the Port Stephens Examiner for twelve years before going into independent publishing, holds concerns over the sustainability of continuously propping up struggling newspapers with government grants.

“It's sad to hear the Port Stephens Examiner is likely to close, however I don't agree with governments continually offering newspapers grants and funds just to survive,” Mr Wright said.

The Port Stephens Examiner is published by Australian Community Media (ACM), led by CEO Antony Catalano.

In April 2020 ACM suspended 86 non-daily titles, citing the economic downturn brought on by COVID-19, permanently shutting four printing presses.

In the same month the government revealed a pandemic relief package to support regional media outlets which included a $50 million public interest news gathering program for regional media.

At the end of June, it was announced that close to 60 of ACMs titles would return.

On 29 June 2020, Minister Fletcher announced that 107 regional publishers and broadcasters who applied under the Public Interest News Gathering (PING) Program, were found successful to receive a share of $50 million funding committed to support news services who provide public interest journalism to regional communities.

ACM applied and received $10.46 million, while News Of The Area received around $15,500 for its four titles.

In December 2021, The Guardian revealed that even before the first payment was made, ACM was backing off plans to resume printing many of its titles.

Tragically for some

communities, like Bellingen and the Nambucca Valley, their long-term local publications never returned to print.

Unfortunately, this week’s frontpage call for government assistance is not a one off.

In response to rapidly rising printing costs, ACM publications across the country appealed for government support on 5 May 2022 with a frontpage spread warning readers ‘Your Paper In Peril’.

Just eight days later, the Australian Government announced a total of $15 million (GST exclusive) in grants to support publishers with printing costs as part of the Regional and Local Newspaper Publishers Program.

While Mr Wright agrees that while the rising cost of printing presents a huge challenge to newspaper production companies, he does not believe that becoming reliant on government funding is a sustainable solution.

“The grants can be helpful for short term assistance, and we have been grateful to receive them, but the majority of your revenue has to come from advertising or other avenues, not from government grants.

“We have received around $140,000 in government assistance in the past few years, but without the funding we have a business model that allows us to operate without assistance.

“I don't believe continual government assistance is appropriate for a business model that is clearly not viable or sustainable,” he said.

It was a prior paper closure that saw Mr Wright enter the world of independent publishing.

“My wife and I live in Medowie and restarted Myall Coast News Of The Area in 2014 off the back of Fairfax closing it.

“It was deemed not to be

viable.

“We have made this paper a great success for the people of Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Bulahdelah and the surrounding area.”

Port Stephens News Of The Area was launched by Michael and his wife Rochelle six years ago to “give people and business an alternative to the Examiner”.

In the face of challenging economic times, and in particular the Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on businesses, News Of The Area has remained in print throughout.

In the past year, News Of The Area’s print costs have risen by more than 30 percent.

“It's safe to say that our Port Stephens paper has also struggled with revenue, but we have been able to keep it going.

“Now we are in a phase of growth and will continue to be a strong voice for our region.”

News Of The Area has also enjoyed growth in other regions in recent years, opening newspapers on the Coffs Coast and in the Nambucca Valley.

“It has been amazing to see our little family business grow to have the impact it is having within communities.”

In May 2020, the 113-yearold Coffs Coast Advocate

was one of more than 100 local and regional News Corp newspapers to become digital only or disappear entirely.

News Of The Area decided to fill the gap, and six weeks later had created a newspaper for the region.

“Our Coffs Coast News Of The Area is an immensely strong, well followed and solid regional newspaper.

“The quality of the journalism is excellent, while being a free, weekly paper between 48 and 56 pages.

“It shows the impact that independent media can have in a large regional community.”

A year later, when the ACM run Nambucca Guardian News showed no sign of returning to news stands, News Of The Area delivered a newspaper there too.

Mr Wright said the independent media can be highly effective in regional communities.

“I am aware of many other small independent publishers, who live within their communities, who have opened a quality and solid newspaper after ACM or News Ltd closed a paper.

“Numerous long-time papers have already closed, and I've seen numerous small local family publishers open in their place.”

Like all free papers,

News Of The Area relies on advertising revenue through the support of the business community.

Mr Wright would urge businesses who would like to explore their print advertising options to get in touch with the Port Stephens News Of The Area.

This week News Of The Area announced the appointment of Tracey Bennett as Client Accounts Manager for Port Stephens and the Myall Coast.

Tracey joins the business after more than ten years with the Port Stephens Examiner, where she developed strong relationships with the business sector across the region.

The Medowie local said she is “excited to take on new challenges” in her new role and to help grow the reach of NOTA in the community.

“It is very exciting to be involved in building the paper up.

“It is great that News Of The Area is a small family business, run from Port Stephens.

The paper is very community minded which I really like.

“Hopefully we can keep building.”

AT the end of term, students who have received a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) award from the participating schools in Port Stephens are invited to attend a special ceremony at the Port Stephens Council Chambers.

At this time, the students' achievements are recognised and each is presented with a certificate of merit.

Deputy Mayor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, "It's been lovely to attend and present at the final two PBL nights of 2022.

“Having the opportunity to congratulate our local kids who have done such a good job in their local schools is one of the best parts of my job.

"PBL couldn't happen without all of the parents, teachers, friends, and community, who encourage and support the kids every day.

“We truly do have a special community that places an emphasis on respect and courtesy and it comes through strongly in our PBL program every week,” he said.

The NOTA has been proud to support this community activity which recognises students of all abilities for character, perseverance, honesty and integrity.

McGrath Port Stephens Principal Daniel O’Meara says that as long term locals, now operating under a new name, the team at McGrath Port Stephens are excited to be the major sponsor of this year’s fireworks spectacular.

“We hope that local residents and visitors all enjoy a great family orientated night and a fantastic fireworks display,” Mr O’Meara said.

Dorin’s Draws By Paul DORIN On theCouch

DEAR Jasminda,

My wife has become obsessed with competing with her friends in increasingly time-consuming and expensive Elf on the Shelf ideas.

She spends so much time working out what the Elf will do next, that she is running late for work, forgetting appointments and costing us a fortune at an already expensive time of year.

What is this madness?

How are you celebrating Christmas this year?

KEEN to capture the priceless early holiday memories of Sadie (three) and Theo (seven months), the Johnston/Mansfield/ Nichols family set up a makeshift Christmas photography set at their Anna Bay home last week.

It is the first year the family has come together for a pre-Christmas photography shoot, and 24-year-old Ayla Mansfield said it was a great way to kick off the holiday season while saving money on official Santa photos.

Utilising a keen eye for design and leadership skills that belie her young age, three-year-old Sadie expertly guided the family in the decoration of the Christmas tree while younger brother Theo watched on, joyfully soaking up the holiday spirit.

q (Back row) Lynda Nichols, Scott Mansfield. (Middle row) Ayla Mansfield, Erin Johnston, Paul Johnston, Abby Mansfield. (Seated on laps) Sadie and Theo Johnston.

In anticipation of the big day, young Sadie said she was most excited for “presents”, having requested Woody and Buzz Lightyear toys from Santa Claus this year.

“I love the Christmas decorations and lights,” Sadie said.

Christmas in 2022 is all the more meaningful for the Anna Bay family, as sevenmonth-old Theo will be celebrating for the first time.

How are you celebrating?

To assist in the spreading of Christmas cheer, News Of The Area is inviting local families to share details of their holiday traditions.

Show us how you celebrate by emailing high resolution pictures (with names) to media@newsofthearea.com.au.

Dear Peter,

How things have changed since we were kids.

The most we did was leave out a carrot for the reindeer and a beer for Santa, which always struck me as irresponsible.

How could one Santa drink so much?

Was that the real reason behind his huge stomach and ruddy cheeks?

Would he have perhaps arranged for me to receive a pony instead of a remotecontrolled plane if he'd had less to drink?

Peter, I tend to agree with you about this Elf on the Shelf mania.

In the past week I have seen images of the Elf cutting up children's clothes for his blanket, urinating into a glass (apple juice? we can only hope), fishing in a huge inflatable pool, and spreading reindeer poo (choc drops) all over the carpet.

All this in one of the few times of the year we can draw on the 'Santa won't visit if you don't behave' threat.

I'm not sure what message the Elf is sending, unless it's mass consumerism, misdirected privilege, suburban pointscoring or mindless micro-management.

Thankfully my kids are teenagers and have no interest in elf shenanigans.

It strikes me as another way to spend more money on more landfill while sending a message that it's okay to be sneaky and naughty.

There are now social media accounts dedicated to the Elf, as well as flourishing industries catered to Elf-styling. And when the phase dies out (as it surely will), there will be thousands of little red elves joining the hundreds of blue Smurfs and the millions of Cabbage Patch dolls and the hundreds of Tickle Me Elmos, and the kilometres of Slinkies and the mountains of Rubik's Cubes.

Perhaps then the elves can make better use of themselves and use some of their magic to clean up the mess we've created.

Road safety needs to be improved across regional NSW

LAST Thursday, the Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety (Staysafe) tabled its report on speed limits and road safety in regional NSW.

The Hon. Lou Amato MLC, Committee Chair, acknowledged that more needs to be done to make regional roads safer.

"Most road fatalities happen in country areas.

“Regional communities need roads that are designed and maintained to a high standard to allow them

to safely go about their business,” said Mr Amato.

The Committee found that that the 100 kilometre per hour default speed limit may not be appropriate for all regional roads in NSW.

It recommends that local council requests to review speed limits are responded to more quickly and the reason for changing a speed limit is published.

The Chair stated, "Speed limits are an important way

of keeping our roads safe and should be suitable for the road conditions, and the process for reviewing them should be timely, with any changes clearly explained to the community."

The Committee also recommends construction of more overtaking lanes and allowing a speed limit tolerance when vehicles are safely overtaking.

"More overtaking lanes gives drivers more chances to safely overtake and prevent

them from taking unnecessary risks.", noted Mr Amato.

The report's fifteen recommendations also focus on the need to educate drivers to drive to the conditions, and improved management of speed limits in road work zones.

The feasibility of increasing speed limits above 110 kilometres per hour in some situations was also considered.

Suicide by truck

was raised, with a recommendation that more work be done to better understand this issue.

On this point, the Chair stated, "While some research has been done, it is important that we get a better understanding of this issue, given the tragic affect it can have on all those involved."

The Committee also looked at advances in vehicle technology and found there is a slower uptake in regional areas and that road

infrastructure is not keeping up with these advances.

"We hope the Committee's recommendations help improve road travel, which is a key part of daily life for regional communities," the Chair concluded.

The report is available at http://www.parliament.nsw. gov.au/committees/ inquiries

Applications open for The Y NSW’s 2023 Youth Parliament

CALLING all thought-leaders, change-makers, trailblazers and inspired young people - applications are now open for the Y NSW’s 2023 Youth Parliament.

Young people in years ten, eleven and twelve (or equivalent age) in all 93 NSW state electorates are invited to apply.

As NSW’s premier youth empowerment program operating for over 20 years, Youth Parliament offers young people the opportunity to debate in NSW Parliament, create Youth Bills on issues for change, and have their voices and recommendations heard by Members of Parliament.

Youth Parliamentarians receive specialised training through a series of camps and online workshops, parliamentary education and experience, plus opportunity for community engagement and teamwork which are all designed to nurture participants in developing

Bay Buddies

NOW in its second year, Bay Buddies, an introduction to golf program run by the Nelson Bay Golf Club Ladies’ Committee, has proved most popular with aspiring golfers.

Conducted in conjunction with golf clinics run by the club’s professional golfer, Warren Moses, members meet each Wednesday afternoon to enjoy nine holes in the company of an experienced golfer, or ‘buddy’.

The emphasis of the program is on fun, learning the intricacies of the game in a relaxed atmosphere.

The program has recently involved members in some of the many variations of golf when, as part of the club’s Christmas festivities, the Bay Buddies joined in celebrating the season.

Twenty current and graduated members teamed with club members in a novelty game which allowed the use of just three clubs and a putter.

Normally the choice is between fourteen clubs.

The problem was the choice of which three clubs, a challenge only transcended by the actual selection of which of these three clubs to use when executing a shot on the course.

The Bay Buddies’ serious consideration of this dilemma was duly rewarded.

At the end of the day, of the six prize winning teams, three teams were either totally or partially made-up of Bay Buddies members.

Members of the group who collected their awards during the festive Christmas lunch which followed were Margaret Dunphy, Lorraine Parker, Meg Flack, Karen Steinicke, Jennifer Maher, Kylie Murchie, Sue Wilson and Christine McDonald.

A commendable effort.

With a variety of golf on offer and the opportunity to further familiarise themselves with golf’s diversity, three days later representatives of the Bay Buddies were back on the course.

This time meeting the challenges of a four person Ambrose, again in partnership with club members.

Perhaps a little less daunting than the Christmas game, the choice of the best shot of four being easier to solve than the problem posed by limited club availability.

Barbara Frost told News Of The Area, “Ambrose winners were Bay Buddies Anne Marie Barrett and Lorraine Parker who teamed with more experienced club members, Mary Reisch and Jeanette Fey.

“Runners-up, again Bay Buddies, were Christine McDonald and Ollie Bush, partnered by club members Janelle Tolhurst and Gail Murray.”

Bay Buddies learn that the game of golf is a sport of many facets.

“Whilst serious at times, it is also a great deal of fun - as this week has demonstrated!

“Not only a challenging game, golf is a wonderful way to develop new friendships, exercise and enjoy the outdoors - especially on the picturesque Nelson Bay Golf Course – it is not ‘just’ golf but so much more!” Barbara said.

New members to the program are always welcome.

their skills to create social impact and positive change.

Throughout the program, participants are invited to create reports with recommendations for policy change and debate their recommendations during a mock sitting week in NSW Parliament House chaired by Ministers of Parliament.

The Y NSW then actively works to facilitate ongoing engagement with relevant Ministers.

The Y NSW CEO Susannah

Le Bron commented that the Youth Parliament program provides an important platform to ensure young people are heard.

“Each year I am amazed by the immense passion, intelligence and insight participants bring to Youth Parliament as they speak on issues that are important to them.

“Young people are the focus of everything we do at the Y NSW so it’s incredibly exciting watching participants flourish as they are empowered to engage with civic leadership, policy development and democratic parliamentary debate,” said Le Bron.

In the past ten years, approximately 1,000 young people have participated in the program with 97 percent of participants surveyed saying they felt more empowered to advocate for issues in their local communities.

Testament to the value of the program, former Youth Parliamentarians have gone on to become Members of Parliament and return to the Youth Parliament program as guests and mentors.

“If you are a young person in NSW looking for an opportunity to stand up and give a voice to issues that you’re passionate about, I urge you to put in your application for our 2023 Youth Parliament,” she concluded.

To apply to take part in the 2023 Youth Parliament, eligible young people should visit ymcansw.org.au/youthparliament and submit their application before 17 February 2023.

School teachers and Members of Parliament can also nominate a young person.

What’s Happening Around You

FRIDAY GARDENING AUSTRALIA

ABC, 7.30pm

Host Costa Georgiadis (above) and co-presenters revel in nature’s bounty week in and week out. It’s only fitting that the final instalment of the year is an extrafestive Christmas-themed episode. Tonight, expect the enthusiasm to jolt up a festive notch, with Georgiadis known to sport a Santa hat in the past. A Christmas song gets an impressive spin with Clarence Slockee; Sophie Thomson creates flower lanterns; Josh Byrne primes his garden for the holidays and Millie Ross whips up panettone. It’s a jubilant way for nature lovers – and Georgiadis’ fans – to round out the year.

MONDAY SNACKMASTERS

NBN, 7.30pm

Most of us shy away from pondering just what really is in some of our favourite snacks; we just steadfastly devour them. Besides, the ingredient lists are often a blur of numbers and additives. This entertaining and fun-loving series, hosted by Scott Pickett and Poh Ling Yeow, has thrown some curveballs as the competing chefs try to crack the code to making some of the nation’s favourite tummy fillers. After delicacies such as Cheezels and Domino’s loaded pepperoni cheesy crust pizza, tonight’s final serves up two classics: a Four’N Twenty Classic Meat Pie and King Sized Sausage Roll. Tune in to find out who has their finger in the pie for a win.

WEDNESDAY MAD AS HELL DOES HARD QUIZ

ABC, 8pm

Some of us complain about Christmas, but there comes a time to admit when the annual overload of festive spirit really delivers the goods: this is one of those moments. When you thought you couldn’t possibly watch another Christmas special, Tom Gleeson (above) wraps up a winner, assembling the cast of Mad As Hell. Shaun Micallef’s off-the-wall current affairs spoof bid adieu forever after its 15th season a few months ago, but the cast –Christie Whelan Browne, Tosh Greenslade, Emily Taheny and Francis Greenslade – band together again to battle it out. Topics include US sitcom The Office, slapstick movie Joe Dirt and singer-songwriter Paul Kelly.

National Titles for Tanilba

TANILBA Sailing Club is to host the National Maricat Championships this coming February. They will also run their Big Boat Regatta in the same month.

Fathers Day is usually the opening of the sailing season at Tanilba but the club cancelled the early races due to the floods.

Flotsam and jetsam washed down from the Karuah River posed a navigational hazard so to be on the safe side, races were deferred.

The club sails each Sunday from their picturesque waterfront club at Tanilba Bay.

New members are most welcome and Sam Breaden runs 'learn to sail' sessions with the club's 'Bic' trainers. These were purchased with a State Government Sports and Recreation grant.

Tanilba is a family oriented club with parents actively encouraged to bond with their children during these sessions.

At the end of November, Tanilba sailors travelled to Carcoar near Blayney for their annual Maricat regatta. Seasoned veterans Mark and Mike Colecliffe filled the top two placings with Scott Spencer and his son Kobi performing well.

The club boasts several State and National champions who cut their teeth sailing on the broad expanse of water between Tanilba, Soldiers Point and Tahlee.
