Sculpted by the sea

CREATIVITY manifests itself in many forms and for Mike Rumble of Nelson Bay it's been the call of the ocean that's seen his visions come to fruition.

Mike has honed many years crafting in his carpentry trade to create pieces of fine art from driftwood and recently his handy work has been on display in Newcastle at the Sculptures at Scratchley event with a pelican taking shape from his chosen beach find.

“Sometimes I just don’t know what’s going to come to life from the timber I find when out searching the shorelines,” said Mike.

“Then an idea will pop into my head when examining the contours and scars of the wood and as I start to carve it, it takes a certain likeness and shape and I just run with it.

“A pelican seemed the perfect fit!”

His pelican sculpture quickly caught the nickname ‘Ray’ after his father, who would often show up to the fish cleaning tables seeking some fillets as Mike and his mates dragged in their catches.

Ray the pelican was extremely well received by the curators and local community at the event and it was only after an overwhelming influx

of requests that Mike decided to part ways with the piece.

“I never intended to sell the sculpture and after much umming and ahing we decided to let it go to a good home,” said Mike.

“It was a great event and it would fantastic to see similar ones come to life here in Port Stephens!”

For now Mike is back on the beaches searching for more aquatic inspiration, but sometimes his sculptures

don’t always end up just how we envisioned.

“Last time I had a piece that I thought would be perfect to carve into a whale,” said Mike.

“Not long after starting it, it somehow moulded into a kookaburra.

“Look who’s laughing I suppose…”

For now you can find some of Mike’s handy work at Earthquirks in Nelson Bay with an array of sea and land mammals on display.

Bid to protect Mambo Wanda Wetlands under Ramsar listing

migratory birds, as well as koalas, squirrel gliders, bats and frogs.

It is also a nursery area for a number of fish species.

However, local conservationists are concerned the fragile site is not fully protected.

EcoNetwork Port Stephens is now launching a bid to have the site protected under an international Ramsar listing.

This would give it the same recognition as the Myall Lakes Ramsar site, which encompasses an area of 44,612 hectares and consists

of five separate subsites: the Myall Lakes National Park, Corrie Island Nature Reserve, Little Broughton Island Nature Reserve, part of Girum-bit National Park and part of the Port Stephens–Great Lakes Marine Park.

“Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world, comparable to rainforests and coral reefs,” Nigel Dique of EcoNetwork told News Of The Area.

“They link the environment to people providing urban green space, reduce the impacts of floods, absorb pollutants and improve water quality.

“They also provide habitat

for animals and plants, including migratory wader birds, support biodiversity and form nurseries for fish and other marine life.

“They (Mambo Wanda wetlands) qualify for listing as they satisfy Ramsar criteria guidelines,” he said.

The NOTA first published about the possibility of the local wetlands becoming Ramsar listed in 2016.

A Ramsar listing has many benefits, including increasing opportunities for grant funding at the wetlands, the prestige of international recognition, and educational opportunities for schools and community groups.

Medowie RSL sub-Branch to establish new Auxiliary

A PUBLIC meeting is to be held at 11:30 am on Thursday 22 June at the Medowie Social with the aim of establishing an Auxiliary to support the fundraising efforts of the Medowie RSL sub-Branch.

“For a number of years the Medowie RSL sub-Branch had been supported by what was known at the time as the RSL NSW Women’s Auxiliaries and we are forever grateful for their past efforts,” said sub-Branch spokesperson Mr Peter Stephenson OAM.

“In fact the sub-Branch would never have been able to get off the ground without them.

“However recently that Auxiliary folded and is now no longer a woman only group, with both genders now being able to participate.

“Without a strong volunteer fundraising group we would struggle to meet our aim of supporting veterans and their families when they are most in need,” Mr Stephenson said.

Similar to sub-Branches, the RSL Auxiliary is a non-

political, non-sectarian organisation.

It raises funds for the well-being of current and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force and their families.

Members of the Auxiliary also visit veterans in hospital, in aged care or at home, assist with sub-Branch commemoration activities and often provide meals for sub-Branch functions and events.

The RSL Auxiliary raises funds to support the charitable objects of the subBranch by holding raffles, selling tokens during the ANZAC and Poppy Appeals, as well as other fundraising activities that arise throughout the year in their local community.

RSL Auxiliaries were founded on fellowship and a desire to care for our veterans and this principle guides their existence to the present day.

Members enjoy the friendship of like-minded people, visiting other auxiliaries when they hold

functions, and being able to share ideas and ideals.

Anyone over the age of eighteen years who would like to find out more information is invited to attend the upcoming meeting to hear from the State-Coordinator of RSL NSW Auxiliaries, Mrs Pauline James OAM, who will explain the wonderful work the Auxiliaries have been doing and how you can volunteer your time and energy for a worthwhile cause.

At the same time, any serving or ex-service personnel, as well as existing RSL NSW sub-Branch members, will be able to hear from the outgoing State President, Mr Ray James OAM.

For further information and to register your interest contact Mrs Roslyn Grogan on 0427 995 055 or 4010 4047, Mr Peter Stephenson on 0427 504 907 or email MedowieSB@rslnsw.org.au.

The Medowie Social is on Ferodale Road, Medowie.

However, in-principle support from Council as the site owner is a prerequisite for listing.

This week Port Stephens Councillor Leah Anderson raised a Notice of Motion requesting the support of the General Manager to provide councillors with a report relating to the potential for Ramsar listing of the Mambo and Wanda Wetlands.

“When I was approached to consider protecting the Mambo and Wanda Wetlands Reserves, Nigel Dique of EcoNetwork advised me that he has been trying for several years to get Council to

consider this.

“Nigel helped me to understand that these wetlands form part of an important wildlife corridor and habitat, stretching north of Salamander Bay and West towards Soldiers Point; a massive 188 hectares of saltwater and freshwater wetland that significantly contributes to the performance of the local ecosystem,” she said.

If successful in attaining a listing, the wetlands will be designated of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, conserving them forever.

A Ramsar site nomination is considered by the Australian Government on its merits - the decision rests with the Federal Environment Minister.

Mr Dique and EcoNetwork members are confident that Council will agree to support Ramsar designation after considering the benefits.

According to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment NSW, the main threats to wetlands in New South Wales are: river regulation and water diversion; development and catchment disturbance; introduction of weeds and pest animals and climate change.

Lions Driver Reviver kiosk opens at Twelve Mile Creek

FOR the past 40 years the Lions Club of Raymond Terrace has manned the Twelve Mile Creek Driver Reviver site on the Pacific Highway north of the town.

The purpose of Driver Reviver is to encourage drivers to take a break from their journey and refresh themselves with a free cup of coffee or tea and biscuits.

Since beginning to man the site, the Raymond Terrace Lions Club has towed their catering caravan and coolroom to the rest area.

When operating for multiple days it is necessary for the caravan to be manned around the clock for security purposes.

Dennis Moore of the Raymond Terrace Lions Club told News Of The Area, “It has become increasingly difficult to provide members and volunteers to carry out

these towing and security duties.

“More than two years ago the club made the decision to investigate establishing a permanent and secure kiosk on the site that could be used during holiday periods and be securely locked when not in use.”

The club decided that a converted shipping container was the best option and an estimate of costs was prepared - with $50,000 required to complete the project.

The Raymond Terrace Lions Club voted to contribute 25 percent of the cost, which was to be matched by the Australian Lions Foundation, leaving the remainder to be raised through an appeal to businesses and the public.

“The total funding required was finally achieved and work commenced in early 2023,” Mr Moore said.

“A partly converted

shipping container arrived at Raymond Terrace Men's Shed, where the remainder of the conversion would be carried out.

“The almost completed kiosk was moved to the site prepared by Transport for NSW in early May where a roof over the structure and an awning were installed.

“It was only due to the generosity of some local tradespeople, some of whom charged only for materials, as well as the Men's Shed, that the project was able to be completed within budget.”

At the Driver Reviver the club provides free coffee, tea and biscuits but also has available for sale a selection of hot food.

Driver Reviver is a national program which has been operating since 1989 aimed at reducing the number of fatigued drivers on roads during peak periods.

Support for people with Parkinson’s disease

EVERYDAY 38 people in Australia are diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, and in Port Stephens there is a local support group here to help.

The Port Stephens Parkinson’s Support Group meets regularly, with their recent meeting featuring Evelyn Collin from the Neurological Clinic at John Hunter Hospital as guest speaker.

“Our secretary Laurelle Gordon-Smith presented an array of Australian native flowers to Evelyn for her involvement with our support group for the last fourteen years,” group leader Bob Crampton told News Of The Area.

“Evelyn’s presentation was well received by the 32 members who attended the meeting.”

Following the presentation, there was a Lucky Door prize

of an aromatherapy massage at Barley Sugar Day Spa for one of the carers.

“It was won by Huia Trollope, who was so happy to be able to have this wonderful massage,” Bob said.

Also in attendance were two of the group’s past presidents; John Dunnage, who joined the group in 2008, and Lee Anlezark, who joined in 2010.

One of the important activities offered by the group is a twice weekly exercise program held at Active Fitness in Medowie.

At the end of the meeting, exercise instructor Tracie Tickle did a short demonstration on how to exercise sitting down.

“This is so helpful for people who are not so agile.

“Being part of a support group is so helpful for everyone living with Parkinson’s,” Bob said.

Busy month of May for Marine Rescue volunteers

MARINE Rescue NSW had a busy May - they were involved in 252 rescue missions, returning 398 people safely to shore.

Fifteen of those rescues were in Port Stephens, with five of those conducted by Lemon Tree Passage Marine Rescue volunteers.

Marine Rescue NSW

Commissioner Alex Barrell said volunteers were kept busy assisting boaters on the state’s waterways.

“It is a reminder for boaters how important it is that they check their equipment before they get out on the water and that they take all the right safety precautions,” he said.

Commissioner Barrell said 57 percent of rescue

missions in May were a result of mechanical issues.

“Disappointingly many of the incidents were avoidable

like running out of fuel, flat batteries and mechanical/ engine issues,” he said.

38 percent of the rescue missions were emergency responses and Commissioner Barrell said

with the change in season certain situations could become life-threatening for boaters.

“When boaters break down and become disabled in the colder water, it does

increase the risk of an incident becoming more serious.

“With so many rescues seen through May we are urging boaters to make sure that they do check the conditions before they head out and that they check their vessel,” he said.

“Through May we saw just under five-and-a-half thousand Log Ons and Log Offs over our free Marine Rescue app or over the VHF marine radio.

“It is so important that boaters take the opportunity and take advantage of our service to Log On because we know it saves lives and if you do breakdown and don’t return as planned rescue crews will start looking for you,” Commissioner Barrell said.

Mick Chubb of Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage told News Of The Area, “We alway encourage boaters to

log on whether they are in the local area or heading out to sea.

“You can still log on by radio or telephone to Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage.

“We are now encouraging boaters to use the new Marine Rescue app which makes it even easier to have a safe day out on the water.

“Log On via the app and if you don’t return as planned, we’ll start searching for you.

“Plus you can access local weather and maritime alerts, customisable maps, live bar cam footage and more.

“The feedback we have received about the app has been good and easy to use,” he said.

You can download the app from the App Store or Google Play.

Marine Rescue NSW is a volunteer based notfor-profit professional organisation dedicated to keeping boaters safe on the water and supporting local communities.

New report shows record demand for NSW ambulance and emergency departments

THE Bureau of Health Information (BHI) has released its latest ‘Healthcare Quarterly’ report, showing activity and performance for public health services in NSW during January to March 2023.

BHI has also released survey results that reflect patients’ experiences of ambulance services.

BHI Chief Executive Dr Diane Watson said the latest quarterly results show NSW public health services were once again very busy during January to March 2023.

“Ambulance services and emergency departments experienced record demand as the upward trend in activity that began before the pandemic continued,” said Dr Watson.

There were 347,720 ambulance responses – the highest of any quarter since BHI began reporting in 2010.

“Despite the increasing demand, ambulance response performance has continued to improve following record long response times in mid-2022,” said Dr Watson.

• 44.1 percent of ‘emergency – priority

1’ ambulance cases were reached within fifteen minutes

• 64.6 percent of the highest priority (P1A) responses arrived within ten minutes.

There were 770,089 ED attendances – the highest of any January to March quarter since BHI began reporting in 2010.

“While there was gradual improvement again on the time patients waited to start their treatment, they continued to wait longer and spend longer in the ED than before the pandemic,” said Dr Watson.

• 67.4 percent of all patients, and 54.9 percent of triage 2 patients, had their treatment start on time – both the lowest of any January to March quarter since 2010.

• 58.2 percent of all patients spent less than four hours in the ED – the lowest for a January to March quarter since 2010.

There were 54,820 elective – or planned – surgeries performed in the January to March quarter.

Patients continued to experience long waits for non-urgent elective surgery as the effects of suspensions of services during the pandemic continued to be felt.

One in ten patients who received nonurgent surgery during the quarter waited longer than 523 days.

“While the overall waiting list remained high at 96,857 at the end of March, the number of patients on the list who had waited longer than clinically recommended dropped by almost a quarter (24.4 percent) from the previous year to 14,067,” Dr Watson said.

The Insights Series: Patients’ experiences of ambulance services

This two-page report presents key insights into the experiences of 1,230 patients who arrived by ambulance to one of 76 large NSW EDs between July and

September 2022 and responded to specially tailored questions in the Emergency Department Patient Survey.

“Patients were overwhelmingly positive about their ambulance care,” said Dr Watson.

“Overall, almost all patients (98 percent) said their ambulance care was

‘very good’ or ‘good’ and BHI’s analyses showed when patients experienced effective communication, wellcoordinated care and kind and caring ambulance staff they were most likely to offer the most positive rating.”

The Insights report also includes analyses that shows people offered similar ratings

of ambulance care across different patient groups on most questions, while identifying those areas where there was some variation.

Detailed results for Healthcare Quarterly and The Insights Series: Patients’ experiences of ambulance services are available at bhi. nsw.gov.au

What’s the Voice referendum about?

It’s about whether we should change the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by setting up an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. A referendum is the only way to change the Australian Constitution.

What is the Voice?

The Voice would be a permanent body that gives independent advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect First Nations people.

The Voice aims to help the Parliament and Government to make better decisions and deliver better outcomes for First Nations people.

How will the Voice be set up?

How it’s set up would be determined after the referendum with input from First Nations people, the broader public and the Government. The Parliament would then make a law to set up the Voice.

The intention is that its members will be chosen by and representative of, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from across Australia.

Kaylee shares story through Wishmaker Month campaign

student Kaylee Hodgson is a childhood cancer survivor and an ambassador for Make a Wish Australia.

Kaylee, now twelve-yearsold, was diagnosed with high risk Leukaemia in 2019 and needed a life saving bone marrow transplant.

She was finally declared cancer free in 2020.

In 2022, after regaining her strength and Covid restrictions allowed travel again, Kaylee was granted a wish through Make a Wish Australia.

“When I was in hospital and I was having a lot of chemo

and medicine and radiation, my parents would remind me that each little step would be one step closer to being free and enjoying a wish,” Kaylee told News Of The Area.

“It

“I had never felt snow and I really wanted to know what it felt like.

“They organised so many things for me while we were there.

“I got to snowboard, toboggan, have a fire, be filmed

like a movie star!

“Make a Wish definitely made my wish come true!”

Prior to Kaylee’s life saving bone marrow transplant, the Hodgson’s were instructed by their oncologist to take a minigetaway somewhere local to enjoy time together as a family.

“That holiday was filled with fear and worry and sadness,” Kaylee’s mum Alana Hodgson said.

“When Kaylee’s wish was fulfilled we didn’t have to organise a single thing and we were able to make positive, happy, lifelong memories together as a family,” she said.

After being an ambassador for Make a Wish in 2022,

Kaylee was chosen as a Wishmaker Kid for 2023.

She now features in the Hungry Jack’s Wishmaker campaign, helping raise much needed money for future Wishmaker Kids by sharing her story. Kaylee travelled to Sydney a few months back to film for the Hungry Jack’s Wishmaker Month, which commenced last week.

As part of the campaign, Kaylee’s photo and story will feature in Hungry Jack’s restaurants all over Australia.

For the next month you can purchase a star at Hungry Jack’s, with 100 percent of donations going to Make a Wish Australia.

This week’s Positive Behaviour for Learning nominees

THE Raymond Terrace Community Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program recognises local students for their care, citizenship and displays of community values.

This week, another round of nominees from participating schools have received awards for their efforts.

Sarah Foister, PBL coordinator for Karuah Public School, told News Of The Area, “Karuah Public School students, staff and community members are respectful, responsible and proud members of

the Raymond Terrace Community PBL program.

“Implementing PBL in our school enables us to be proactive in responding to the needs of our students and acknowledge, reward and celebrate the positive contributions our students make to our school and community.

Anthony ensured students were in the right place, understood what they had to do and used kindness and friendly talk to help.

Grahamstown Public School (GPS) student Ailyah Redman was nominated for her commitment to being a great school citizen.

Aliyah is a role model to younger students; including them in games and ensuring they feel a part of the GPS team.

Irrawang High School (IHS) student Evan Flippence was nominated for being a very committed Creative and Performing Arts student.

Evan is heavily involved in the IHS Drum Corps and Drama activities and he is a PBL Ambassador who also participates in many sports.

which Amelia Williams of Salt Ash Public School demonstrated at a recent netball gala day resulted in her nomination.

Medowie Public School student Will Palmer was nominated for acting responsibly by making a kind decision at the school’s athletics carnival.

After finishing his race he went back and assisted his peer who was having difficulty finishing as their shoe kept falling off.

Will went back and ran with his peer to help them finish the race, encouraging them all the way.

Seaham Public School student Jasmine Wade was

nominated for her care and responsibility when she found a Seaham school hat at Raymond Terrace MarketPlace.

Jasmine took possession of the hat and ensured that it was returned to its owner when she returned back to school.

Molly-May Sasse of Karuah Public School was nominated for assisting a younger student who was riding his bike home by himself when his bike wheel malfunctioned and wouldn’t spin.

Molly helped the student carry the bike home. Congratulations from the team at the NOTA to all the PBL nominees.

Ten dead in horror crash, emergency services respond

TEN people have died following a fatal bus crash in Greta, with emergency services from around the Hunter and Port Stephens swiftly responding to the scene.

The incident took place near the roundabout on Wine Country Drive close to the Hunter Expressway offramp in Greta.

At approximately 11:30 PM on Sunday, June 11, emergency services were alerted to a coach that had rolled over, prompting a large-scale emergency response.

The passengers on board were returning from a wedding at a winery when their coach overturned.

Units from Hunter Valley Police District, Police Rescue, Traffic and Highway Patrol, NSW Ambulance paramedics, NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Rural

Fire Service, and multiple helicopters for hospital transports were deployed to the scene.

Initial investigations suggest that the bus crash resulted in the loss of ten lives.

The identities of the deceased individuals are yet to be released pending family notifications.

Efforts are being made to ensure that impacted families are promptly informed.

25 injured passengers were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals via helicopter and road, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

The conditions of the injured individuals vary, and medical professionals were diligently providing them with care on Monday.

The driver of the bus, a 58-year-old man, was taken to Cessnock Police Station and was charged with

ten counts of dangerous driving occasioning death - drive manner dangerous, and negligent driving (occasioning death).

The Maitland man was refused bail to appear at Cessnock Local Court on Tuesday 13 June 2023.

The local community has been deeply affected by the tragedy, with support services mobilised to offer counselling and assistance to those impacted.

As the investigation progresses and the community begins the healing process, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information about the incident to come forward and assist in establishing a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the crash.

On Monday, NSW Premier Chris Minns described the incident as a “profoundly tragic event”.

“I extend my deepest

condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of those who have been killed in this accident and those who are injured.

“I know the whole community of NSW, and in particular the people of the Hunter, will be shocked and saddened to wake up to this news today.

“I thank our emergency services personnel and agencies for their incredible response overnight and today - NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Health and Transport for NSW.

“Support is being offered to those impacted by this

tragedy.

“Investigations into the circumstances of the accident have commenced, led by NSW Police.”

Nationals leader David Littleproud MP said the horror crash “demonstrates the fragility of life”.

“There's no words or comfort myself, the Prime Minister or anybody can give families today.

“This is pure grief that they will have to endure.

“But they should know that this country will wrap its arms around and know that that pain is one that's shared.

“But it'll be a long

journey for them.

“And to our emergency service personnel who face up to this, who face the trauma of this, I just lend a thought to them as well for their bravery, their professionalism in our hour of need.

“This is a tragedy, one in which the nation just needs to understand and that'll take time.

“And I think we just need to, at this time, just understand the pain and anguish that those families are going through, as this unfolds today and in coming hours," Mr Littleproud said.

Air show set to thrill at Williamtown

THE Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), in partnership with the City of Newcastle and Port Stephens Council, is proud to announce the Air Force Newcastle Williamtown Air Show 2023.

The biennial Air Show will be held over the weekend of 18 and 19 November 2023 in both Newcastle and at RAAF Base Williamtown.

Led by the City of Newcastle, the free community event on Saturday 18 November will include morning and afternoon flying displays by Air Force aircraft over Newcastle beaches and rivers.

On Sunday 19 November, RAAF Base Williamtown will open its gates for a ticketed non-flying Open Day featuring static ground displays and a range of military equipment from across the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

Head of RAAF air shows, Air Commodore Micka Gray, said RAAF Base Williamtown

had a long association with the Newcastle and Port Stephens communities.

“RAAF Base Williamtown has been a part of the community since opening in 1941, at the time providing protection for the Hunter region’s strategic port and steel manufacturing facilities during World War II,” Air Commodore Gray said.

“Air Force is proud to work with the City of Newcastle and Port Stephens Council to showcase the people and military capabilities, and to extend our sincere gratitude to the community for its support.

“The flying displays in Newcastle, and the open day at the base, aim not only to strengthen our relationship with the community, but offer insight into the vital role the ADF plays in ensuring the security of our nation.”

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the Air Force Air Show hosted in Newcastle was another example of how the city

had transformed as one of Australia's prime major event destinations.

"City of Newcastle is proud to partner with the RAAF to deliver the Air Force Newcastle Williamtown Air Show 2023," Lord Mayor

Nelmes said.

"City of Newcastle will help create a festival atmosphere for the event, with family-friendly viewing areas at Foreshore Park and Stockton.

“We look forward to

seeing spectators line our harbour city in November.”

Tickets for the Open Day on Sunday at RAAF Base Williamtown will be available for purchase from late September 2023.

There is no ticket

requirement for the flying displays in Newcastle on the Saturday.

Modern Day Castaway in the Bay

FROM the Tomaree Peninsula, to the open seas of north-east Australia and into the remote wilderness of Tasmania, Michael ‘Outback Mike’ Atkinson has tested his fortitude and favour with the natural environment.

Now after returning to his One Mile Beach adobe after appearing on Alone Australia, a SBS television series about surviving the harsh winters of the Apple Isle, he’s penned a paperback titled ‘ModernDay Castaway’ that gives the people of Port Stephens and beyond an insight into his experiences.

The book focuses on his journey in 2021 from Townsville to the remote islands off Cape York in a dugout canoe he crafted in his backyard right here in paradise to retrace the steps of historic shipwreck survivor James Morrill.

“I sourced a four ton Norfolk Pine log that I originally thought would take around four months to build, but in the end it took approximately fourteen,” said Mike.

“The journey took around 50

days and I covered about 1500 kilometres through sometimes treacherous seas with a croc or two

thrown in for good measure.

“Along the way the original rudder I crafted snapped and I had

to fashion a piece of driftwood I found on an island to complete the journey!”

Upon his return Mike had no intention of writing a book, first envisioning to document the journey through the footage he compiled into a feature film.

Once he sat down to start the editing process the survivalist soon found himself getting the urge to expand further on his adventure through the written word.

“There was so much that happened throughout the whole process and you’re not always rolling film to capture it, especially at night,” said Mike.

“You can really convey much more through a book compared to an hour long documentary!”

With the book now released, after a launch recently at Customs House in Newcastle, Mike is focusing on finishing his film with an eye to traverse the country and show others how it all went down in the flesh.

For release dates and more on the survivalists process head over to his social media pages @ outback_mike and join in on the journey.

Little is known of the disease which is caused by a parasite which attacks and kills the Sydney Rock oyster. There is no impact on human

IT was in 2013 when I launched my book, ‘Oysterman’, in the Karuah RSL Club.

At the time the Port Stephens oyster industry was struggling to reestablish itself as the premier oyster growing waterway in the state.

In the 1940s Port Stephens was rightfully written about as being ‘The World’s Biggest Oyster Farm’ which was a big call when you consider that oysters are grown from Norway to the waters near Morocco, France, Holland, Asia, the Americas and south to Australia and New Zealand.

In Port Stephens, up until the

mid to late 1980s, Sydney Rock oysters were grown successfully from Corrie Island to Cromarty Bay, North Arm Cove to Swan Bay and Carrington to the Karuah River and Tilligerry Creek.

In 1984-5 a non-indigenous oyster entered the system.

The Pacific oyster had arrived and decisions had to be made.

Do we farm it, or do we make every effort to remove it?

Indecision led to oyster farmers going broke and losing everything.

The following years saw a slow recovery with confidence returning.

The local industry continued to bring hope when recently, in August 2021, QX disease was confirmed.

health.

Over the years that it took to write the book, I met all the oyster growers and their families. They were the most wonderful

people.

Stinker’s History: Oyster industry struggling

I can only hope that the oyster crisis that we are currently experiencing will soon pass and answers are found.

Cove, the hub of the industry, in full swing in 1973.

Stinker’s Fishin’ and Stories

THE whale watching season is in full swing with a procession of the monsters leisurely cruising north. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the season opening celebrations when a fleet of local vessels left the port and headed for the open ocean.

There are whales everywhere, an estimated 40,000 passing with a population increasing at thirteen percent each year.

This is great news, however there is a problem for those of us who head to sea fishing in a tinny.

Stinker’s Fishin’: Boaties beware

As you know ‘Stinkpot’ is three metres in length, which looks even smaller when an adult humpback wants to cuddle up and make friends.

Last season I had numerous close encounters in front of the Outer Lighthouse.

I mean real close, within a couple of metres!

Inquisitive giants, just wanting to make eye contact.

Whales stare at me and I can clearly see the barnacles and smell their breath!

It's a strange sensation, more excitement than fear.

I check my life jacket and look for

the closest rock to swim to if I get upended.

I do expect more tales of encounters as this season progresses.

I would suggest to all boaties to have a ‘whale plan’ in place. Good news for those who make the Nelson Bay Breakwall their second home over the winter months.

The luderick have arrived. Thumpers with broad shoulders and bright eyes.

Remember, ten fish in one day is the bag limit.

Dear Jasminda,

I went to my GP and he said I am probably having a funny turn or going through perimenopause. It doesn’t feel very funny.

Port Lifeguards to patrol through winter

AUSTRALIAN Lifeguard Service (ALS) lifeguards will continue patrolling in Port Stephens through winter for a fourth consecutive year, with flags remaining at One Mile Beach.

It comes after several major incidents in the region over the past few months, namely the drowning of a man at Fingal Spit in April and, a fortnight ago, when a man was pulled unconscious from the water by lifeguards at One Mile.

He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital conscious and breathing following first aid attention.

As a result, Port Stephens Council has elected to continue the service through winter and into the next patrol season, beginning in September.

“Our focus is and always will be the safety of beachgoers on our coastline and it’s excellent to see that Port Stephens Council shares that focus,” said Chris O’Rorke from the ALS.

“While the winter months are often colder and see less overall beach visitations, the data we have collected over the past three seasons suggests there is a clear need for lifeguards at One Mile Beach and the work they do has lifesaving impacts.”

Indeed, since 2020 at One Mile Beach, ALS lifeguards have been responsible for 21 rescues, more than 120 first aids, nearly 8,000 preventative actions and over 16,000 public interactions during the winter months.

Beach attendance has grown year on year, with nearly 50,000 people estimated to have visited the area between June and August in 2022.

To complement the continued service of the ALS, Surf Life Saving NSW is about to install an Emergency Response Beacon (ERB) at Fingal Spit with funding support from the NSW Government.

q Flags will remain up at One Mile Beach through winter.

ERBs utilise the latest technology to connect the user straight to the SLSNSW State Operations Centre (SOC) where an operator can alert the nearest lifesavers, lifeguards or other emergency service.

ALS lifeguards will patrol at three key locations through winter – Main Beach in Byron Bay, Town Beach in Port Macquarie and One Mile Beach in Anna Bay.

Lifeguards will be on duty between 9:00am and 4:00pm, 7 days a week at One Mile Beach, thanks to the support of Port Stephens Council.

As always, the ALS urges all beachgoers to take advantage of the winter service and swim at a patrolled location.

Dear Mrs KD,

BOY, do I know those sensations. They happen to me whenever I watch Dave Le’aupepe gyrate to Let Me Down Easy.

It’s uncanny. Seriously, though, you have gone to a doctor describing what you think is a medical emergency and they have downplayed it by using a term that doesn’t adequately describe your suffering.

A funny turn gives off casual and

comical connotations. It sounds like what you’d experience after going on The Rotor at Luna Park, or drinking a couple of glasses of champagne on a whale watch cruise. Type your symptoms into Google, though, and it’s a different story – you could have anything from sinusitis to Supraventricular tachycardia. Those conditions don’t sound funny at all.

The problem with ‘a funny turn’ diagnosis is it is too understated. It doesn’t go anywhere near explaining the vertiginous rocking, overheating, breathing difficulties and pins and needles you describe. The same with term perimenopause, which has an almost exotic sound to it: Peri: a Spanish-inspired feast; men: yes, please; o-pause: take a little rest. No, what you describe is more like a ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ breakdown accompanied by self-combustion. You are literally in the midst of your own climate change wars.

Mrs KD, if these symptoms continue, perhaps seek out a second or third opinion. After all, you know your body better than anyone else and it seems to be giving you a particularly rough time at the moment.

BY DAY she is an inspirational public service leader with the Department of Social Services and by afternoons an active role model for netball in the Port Stephens region.

Meet decorated Medowie sporting volunteer Jodi Cassar PSM, the tireless President of Port Stephens Netball Association who has chalked up over three decades of distinguished service to her organisation as a player and official.

Jodi’s passion for netball shines like a beacon and she continues to devote many hours of her time to ensure that grassroots participation in the game is provided for girls and boys – both young and old – across the community.

Earlier this year, a proud Jodi was awarded the Public

Service Medal in recognition of her outstanding public service and leadership.

In her role as Branch Manager, Portfolio Response COVID-19 Taskforce, she demonstrated outstanding leadership under pressure in an environment of considerable public interest.

Ms Cassar's co-ordination and engagement across governments, disability and health sectors and the disability community supported the acceleration of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout for people with disability.

Her work enabled more than 2.5 million doses of the vaccine to be provided to people with disability, access to free rapid antigen tests and ventilation supports.

In addition to this recognition from the Commonwealth, Jodi was one of eleven Community Champions nominated as part of Port Stephens Council’s Annual Awards and

was named Sportsperson of the Year for her sterling contributions to grassroots netball administration.

A chuffed Jodi told News Of The Area, “Netball has always been such a great passion, at grassroots level team sports are so important to the social wellbeing of people and netball provides that.

“One of the areas we are really focused on with netball in the Hunter is how we create pathways to preelite levels and through the work of Hunter Netball we're driving a bid with Netball NSW to be part of the Premier League competition,” she revealed.

“This will have great benefits to netballers from across Port Stephens and the greater Hunter region,” Jodi added.

A Life Member of Medowie Netball Club and also Port Stephens Netball Association, Jodi was also awarded the

Netball NSW Dot McHugh OAM Administrators Award in 2022 for her outstanding leadership and management of the administration of netball in the Port Stephens community.

Accessibility and inclusion is an important role of the game that Jodi promotes, with all programs offered under Netball NSW being offered at Port Stephens Netball Association.

This includes the Inclusive Netball Uniforms policy introduced by Netball Australia and the growth in boys and mens pathways.

She’s also helped to instigate the inclusion of Acknowledgement of Country prior to all meetings and at the commencement of each playing day.

The accolades don’t stop there.

Jodi was recently nominated by Netball NSW for Volunteer Director of the Year and selected as a finalist at the 2023 Sports Foyer NSW Community Sports Awards to be staged on Thursday June 29 at CommBank Stadium,

Parramatta.

Presented by Sport NSW, these Awards recognise outstanding achievements

and

WE’RE running out of superlatives to describe Raymond Terrace bowler Lee Schraner.

In winning the 2022-23 Men’s Champion of Champions Singles, he’s now cemented his place in the bowling history books for many reasons.

Firstly, he’s become the first male player since Rex Johnston in 1990 to win the State Champion of Champions Singles and Pairs double, joining an exclusive list of players to do so.

Those who have followed Schraner’s career will know that his impressive record in singles extends beyond just New South Wales, having won State Champion of Champions Singles titles in Victoria and Tasmania.

This win, in his third state, is also his eighth State Champion of Champion

Singles title, taking him past his longtime hero and legend of bowls Glyn Bosisto’s seven titles.

It was an emotional moment for Schraner who idolised Bosisto, but the Raymond Terrace Jet is his own history maker now, and he will look towards the National Champion of Champions, an event he has already won on three previous occasions.

The final was an absolute epic, with Schraner facing off against Jake Lawton (East Maitland).

Lawton had earned his place in the final playing a solid and consistent style of play, claiming the scalps of NSW U25 representative Michael Phillips (Merrylands) and KENO NSW Blues

representative Mason Lewis (Engadine) along the way.

Raymond Terrace Bowler sets a new record

In the early stages it was Schraner who had the early jump on Lawton, leading 113. Facing the task of trying to get back into the game against Schraner, many bowlers would have seen it as too difficult, but Lawton thought differently.

Sticking to his guns, he drew superbly and with every shot Schraner threw at him, he invariably had a response.

At 24-22 down, Lawton was match down with one bowl to go, and after considering his shot selection he played the perfect bowl to sit Schraner through the head and hold three, as well as match.

As most champions do, Schraner responded by

drawing third shot and taking the match to a last-end shootout.

Again, Lawton was first on the jack, drawing within about an inch.

Schraner again had the answer, this time with his third bowl sitting out shot with perfect weight.

Lawton’s last bowl had the chance to move jack back to hold game, and he did manage to make contact, but only to see the jack jam up against Schraner’s shot bowl and remain there, giving Schraner a hard earned victory.

In the Pairs, Matt Baus and Lee Schraner defeated brothers Dan and Rick Roper of Waverley 21 to 14 in an epic match that was finished under lights.

Port Stephens Power topple league leaders

THE PORT Stephens Power women's team have thrown down the gauntlet to their premiership rivals in the 2023 AFL Hunter Central Coast Seniors Black Diamond Plate series.

The Power showed they are a force to be reckoned with after toppling competition leaders Cardiff Eagles (5-6) 36 to (5-4) 34 in a thriller at their home base at Medowie’s Ferodale Oval.

It was Port’s fifth win of the season and lifts the club into equal second spot on 22 points – just two behind the high flying Eagles (24).

Sixteen-year-old young gun Taylor Smith produced another masterclass performance to spearhead a rousing win over the top ranked Cardiff side.

The Sydney Under 18s midfield representative booted two goals and inspired team mates with her courage, tenacity and all round skills to underline her raw potential.

Cardiff led by twelve

points coming into the final quarter before the Power staged a spirited comeback to edge out the Plate leaders.

Experienced Port fullback/wing/ruck Renee Selby told News Of The Area the two point victory over the Eagles has given the girls “a

massive confidence boost”.

“We have notched up some classic wins this season but the highlight is definitely rolling the powerful Cardiff team,” quipped Renee.

“I was so proud of the way we fought back with every team member playing their

part.”

As well as sinking Cardiff, Port have registered thumping wins over Newcastle City (8722), Terrigal-Avoca (141-7), Cats (116-0) and Gosford Tigers (130-15) and drew with Killarney Vale Bombers (27-all).

Nelson Bay Croquet Club

NELSON Bay Croquet Club entered two teams in the 2023 State Pennants Division 2 competition.

The Samurai team finished 4th in the Hunter region qualifying competition and the Kingsley team finished 1st to qualify for the finals held at Canberra Croquet Club on Sunday 4 and Monday 5 June.

State Pennants contests involve 4 players playing 2 singles matches and 1 doubles match, each of which is best-of-three games.

The Division 2 qualifying competition was closely contested with Nelson Bay and Toronto Croquet Club finishing equal on top with 4 contests won with 1 lost and 10 matches won with 5 lost .... but Nelson Bay were placed 1st on the basis of 25 games won and 16 lost versus Pelican's 22 games won and 16 lost.

Canberra Croquet Club had offered to host the final and then qualified for the final from the Southern/ ACT qualifying competition. With a strong team playing

at home, they were the favourites and duly obliged to go through the finals unbeaten and become the 2023 Division 2 champions. In the final contest, the Kingsley team played Marrickville to determine 2nd and 3rd place; unfortunately, Marrickville proved too strong, winning 3-0, for Kingsley to finish 3rd.

A fair result for the Kingsley team which comprised Rob Batho, Sherry Gordon, Karen Lilly, Rae Uptin and David Wilson, with Marty Quirke filling-in for one qualifying contest.

They have lost only twice this series to Maitland Saints (66-14) and the Bateau Bay Blues (41-35).

Other Power players to impress this season include full forwards Beth Daniels and Mikaela Cameron, midfielders Lauren Kidd, Josie

Demon defender Daniel is Marauders' inspirational leader

MEDOWIE native Daniel Carmody was always destined to play rugby for his hometown.

Having grown up just a stone’s throw from Boyd Oval, where he witnessed many a union fixture, there was every chance he would one day pull on a Marauders jumper.

Daniel’s early childhood days were spent down at the oval, honing his tackling technique in pick up matches with the local neighbourhood kids and building a reputation as a football ‘enforcer’.

But the Marauders had to wait to get their man.

The Carmody family took eldest son Daniel to the Raymond Terrace Roosters Junior Rugby League Club as a feisty five-year-old to play in the local Under 7s competition.

Even from this tender age, Daniel was labelled a “demon defender” with the ability to demolish opposing teams with his bone-jarring tackles.

The Medowie rugby legend told News Of The Area that “tackling always came naturally to me”.

“From the moment I started playing I took great satisfaction in executing the big hits,” he recalled.

Daniel enjoyed a successful rugby league career with the Roosters that spanned twelve seasons – captaining the club to Grand Final appearances as a tough-

tackling forward and collecting a long service medal when he ‘retired’ at the age of seventeen.

His introduction to rugby came five years earlier as a pupil at Medowie’s Wirreanda Public School.

Daniel was selected in the Hunter Primary Schools rugby representative team and joined the Medowie Marauders from Under 14s – combining his league and union commitments on weekends.

He participated in the Hunter Sports High Rugby program from Year 7 to Year 10 before completing his studies at the Callaghan College Jesmond Senior Campus in Year 11 and 12.

Daniel had a short stint with the Hamilton Hawks Colts Under 19s before retiring to focus on his tertiary studies.

After undertaking a five year sporting sabbatical to complete a Bachelor Business degree in Innovative Entrepreneurship at Newcastle University, the power running forward is making a comeback to rugby this season with his beloved Marauders.

The Medowie boys have endured an injury-ravaged campaign to date in the Hunter Suburban Rugby competition under the guidance of experienced mentor Josh Murphy.

Daniel’s rugby career has been hampered by injury – sustaining two broken wrists, damaged shoulder and knee and groin problems over the years.

He was appointed the Marauders’ first grade captain but is currently sidelined with a hip injury and broken hand.

Daniel’s inspirational leadership and punishing defence has been sorely missed and despite the

SUNDAY DANCING WITH THE STARS

SEVEN, 7pm

SUNDAY GRAND DESIGNS REVISITED

ABC, 7.30pm

Kevin McCloud (above) has seen a lot of houses in his more than 20 years as presenter of this aspirational architecture series, but none are more memorable than tonight’s spectacular failure. The bemused and sympathetic host obviously couldn’t resist the invitation to see what has transpired at North Devon’s enormous seafront spectacle, which saw Edward Short say goodbye to millions of pounds, as well as his marriage. More than 10 years after visiting the unfinished “dream” project, he returns to find out its fate. It’s a remarkable story of excess, but also one of optimism and hope in the face of financial disaster.

FRIDAY, June 16

Dance like no one is watching, they say. But in this star-studded competition – returning for a fresh season of everything from a possible rumba to perhaps even a spot of breakdancing – everyone’s eyes will be peeled. From the sparkling costumes and enthusiastic moves to every awkward step, the stars’ performances will be analysed. Affable hosts Sonia Kruger and Daryl Somers are back, along with new judges Craig Revel Horwood and Sharna Burgess to encourage the competitors’ inner dancer. The celebs burning up the dance floor this time include foodie Matt Preston, Olympian Sally Pearson, actress Pia Miranda (right) and landscaper Charlie Albone.

MONDAY 24 HOURS IN EMERGENCY

SBS, 9.25pm

others quietly thrive. may well be the longest-

with news it will deliver a 20th season, but it’s this real-life British medical stalwart that endures. Tonight, it returns with an extraordinary 30th season, with a new setting to boot. The accident and emergency department at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, one of the busiest departments in Europe, is the long-serving series’ new base. We meet 45-year-old Kristy, who has dislocated her ankle on a fun run, and seven-year-old Hunter, who has come off worse for wear after tumbling from a tree. It’s not glossy, but it’s brimming with heart.

HUNTER River High School year 12 student Abbey Lonsdale recently participated in the NSW Interschool Championships for equestrian at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Abbey enjoyed some wonderful results, riding her horse ‘Special Edition’ (also known as Elvis).

Abbey and Elvis took out third place in the Secondary Combined Training (jumping and dressage) and fourth place in Elementary Dressage. This has qualified the duo for the Nationals to be held in Melbourne in September 2023.

and Elvis

“This year we will be competing around my HSC, but I want to take advantage of how well Elvis is performing and my final year of school.” Karina Chambers, Community Liaison Officer at Hunter River High School said, “We wish Abbey and Elvis the best of luck!”
