Bayfit Healthy Ageing By Marian SAMPSON STAYING fit and healthy is a priority if you plan to age well. There is a group of ladies based on the Tomaree Peninsula that get together and stay active together through Bayfit. The group is organised by Debbie Freeman and offers sensible exercise options for older women to assist them in staying well and active as they age. Julie McAllister, an avid Bayfit devotee, told News Of The Area, “BayFit Senior Fitness had hilarious fun
and games during their Christmas Luncheon at Nelson Bay Golf Club. “Instructor and luncheon organiser Debbie Freeman thanked everyone for their support during a difficult year with number restrictions,” she said. Certificates and awards were presented, best “Christmas Spirit” outfits lined up and most amusing table games played with great prizes. Lesley Mackintosh thanked Debbie on behalf of all seniors in her classes, for her dedication and hard work. how to cook outdoors, there is a second set of considerations before we chuck another shrimp on the barbeque. Firstly we need to check the fire safety rating and make sure that it is legal to use our barbeques. Wood and charcoal fuelled barbeques are banned at times when the risk of bushfires are
increased. During a Total Fire Ban you can use a gas or electric barbeque provided that it is on a residential property within 20 metres of the house, or it is in a designated picnic area and the barbeque is approved by Council, National Parks or State Forests and it is always attended by a
responsible adult. However the ground within two metres of the barbeque must be cleared of all materials which could burn and you have an immediate and continuous supply of water available. Giacomo Arnott, Deputy Captain Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue told News

Former Jetstar workers recruited q A pair of F-35A Lightning II aircraft (A35-015 and A35-024) fly in formation along the Newcastle region coastline during Exercise Lightning Storm.
q Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC, and Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Mel Hupfeld, AO, DSC, during the announcement of the Joint Strike Fighter – Industry Support Program at Parliament House, Canberra.
FORMER Jetstar aviation workers have been recruited to start a new career in the defence industry as part of the Morrison Government’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program. The 25 former Jetstar workers have commenced their training with BAE Systems Australia to sustain Australia’s growing fleet of F-35A Lightning II and Hawk Lead in Fighter aircraft. Following their training, 21 aviation technicians and logisticians will support the RAAF team at No 81 Wing in the ongoing maintenance of Australia’s F-35A fleet at
RAAF Base Williamtown. Four technicians and logisticians will work on the Hawk at BAE’s facility. Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC said this was a great outcome for the workers who were recently made redundant following Jetstar’s closure of its aircraft maintenance facility near Newcastle in NSW. “I am proud of the way Defence and Australian industry have collaborated to identify new opportunities for these highly skilled workers,” Minister Reynolds said.
“These workers, who will start their new roles in January, will be retained in the local aviation industry while simultaneously helping Defence build its sovereign F-35A sustainment capability. “This is just another example of the way the Morrison Government is working with Australian defence industry to help the economy recover from COVID-19.”
Minister for Defence Industry, Melissa Price said this was a great demonstration of how our defence industry was helping workers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. “During my regular engagement with the sector this year, I have urged companies to take on as many displaced workers as possible,” Minister Price said. “These are workers already extremely wellarmed with great skills and experience and it’s fantastic
that the defence industry sector has been able to recruit their expertise. “Defence’s excellent relationship with Australia’s industry partners has enabled this solution. “It not only offers employment stability for the affected workers, but assists Defence as it builds Australia’s F-35A maintenance capability. “This is another way we are working to keep the wheels of the defence industry turning through these challenging times.” Senator for New South Wales, Hollie Hughes welcomed today’s announcement and said it was another example of
the Morrison Government’s record defence investment supporting jobs across Australia. “There is no doubt it has been a tough year for many Australians due to COVID-19. I’m pleased BAE Systems Australia has been able to employ these workers who were made redundant, offering them a new career in the defence industry,” Senator Hughes said. “The Morrison Government’s investment in the global F-35 Program is boosting Australian industry and supporting jobs right across Australia which comes at such an important time as the economy continues to bounce back from the impacts of COVID-19.”

Messages Connecting Community By Marian SAMPSON
CONNECTION has been one of the biggest casualties of the pandemic. Particularly the elderly have been left isolated and disconnected from their communities as they have locked down and stayed home to stay safe. As one of the most vulnerable age groups impacted by COVID-19, the elderly have done their part and paid a high price. Many of these same people either fought in wars to give us the quality of life that we have, or endured rationing and blackouts at night to keep safe during the days of WWII. Now it is our turn to let them know that they are not q
forgotten. That they matter and that their sacrifice in 2020 has not been unseen. Port Stephens local November Sheehan founded Heart Pen Letter in the midst of the pandemic and engages with members of the community to provide messages of hope for our elderly. The initiative initially started to deliver a nice crafty card with an uplifting message to residents in Port Stephens many aged care facilities. However the movement has grown and now letters and cards have been sent around the state to areas where there are people left isolated by the pandemic. The cards are being distributed from Port Stephens locals to Muswellbrook, Nowra,

Older Australian’s Getting Out and About In The New COVID Normal By Marian SAMPSON
CONNECTIVITY has become a challenge for many people throughout COVID-19. Older Australians in particular were urged to hunker down and stay safe. The World Health Organisation tells us that the United States Of America has 13,234,551 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 264,808 deaths. The United Kingdom has had 1,629,661 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 58,448 deaths. While Australia implemented a strong response resulting in only 27,904 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 908 deaths. All this in 2020, a year that has re-written life.
With Victoria now celebrating suppressing the virus and double donut days being achieved in most states things are starting to relax. The borders are opening and as a community we are ready to move forward in our new COVID-19 safe way. It is the relaxation of restrictions teamed with our communities confidence in our health system which is seeing many older people out and about once more. Probus Clubs exist to support older people to stay connected to their communities and to create opportunities for fun and fellowship. Members of the Fingal Bay Probus Club recently enjoyed a beautiful barbeque, allowing members to connect face to
face once more. Julia Redlich of the Fingal Bay Probus Club told News Of The Area, “When you ask locals about the best local barbecue site, a host of suggestions appear. “One of the favourites for the Probus Club of Fingal Bay is Pearson Park at Soldiers Point.” Pearsons Park offers wide open parklands, facilities, with heaps of parking and wonderful views across Port Stephens to the Tilligerry Peninsula. “At a recent get-together there we also welcomed two about-to-be full members, Ross and Ilona Ferrier,” she said. Serious single vehicle crash – Medowie

PORT STEPHENSNews Of The Area
Medowie Road was closed between the Pacific Highway and Ringwood Road, with local traffic diversions in place. A crime scene was established and Port Stephens-Hunter Police have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The Tomaree Ladies Probus Club are keen to see the New Year in and have a range of trips and outings in the planning stage for 2021. Although plans will remain somewhat fluid and are yet to be finalised due to
COVID-19 restrictions. One outing that is on the calendar for the ladies to look forward to is a High Tea at Heaven Scent Gardens in Salt Ash in February. Heavens Gardens is a delightful property with
a lake and boardwalk and elegantly manicured gardens ready to explore. The property has a large outdoor shelter which is perfect for COVID-19 safe gatherings.
A man has been charged with high-range drink driving after allegedly being caught almost six times the legal limit at Port Stephens. About 4.30pm on Sunday 13 December, police were alerted to a Izuzu D-Max utility allegedly being driven erratically throughout the Tanilba Bay area. A member of the public approached the vehicle
after it mounted the kerb in a carpark on President Wilson Walk and stopped atop a garden bed. The keys were removed from the ignition and police were notified. Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended a short time later and spoke with the driver, a 49-year-old Mallabula man. The driver was subjected to a roadside breath test, returning a positive result.
He was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station, where he underwent a breath analysis which allegedly returned a reading of 0.288. He was issued with a Court Attendance Notice for the offence of highrange PCA. His licence was also suspended. The man is due to face Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 11 January 2021.

Free Community clinic bus back with Santa at the wheel By Sandra MURRAY
Mayoral Column YOU may have seen we’re making a range of improvements in Nelson Bay including new amenities, more parking and laneway art to brighten our streets. Parking in the Bay has always been a hot topic and we’re following the recommendations of the Nelson Bay Independent Parking Panel and from the Public Domain Plan to make it easier, quicker and safer to find a park. This new smart parking system has been designed to increase parking spaces and improve safety in Nelson Bay — bringing us in line with other smart cities. The new technology includes parking sensors to encourage turnover of parks, meaning even more people will be able to come and support local business after what has been a tough year. We’re also installing digital signage to show how many parks are available, while the Park’nPay app will help you find a park and number plate recognition technology will be your new ticket to park. Plus, if you’re a resident, ratepayer or you work in the town centre, you may be eligible for free parking — visit portstephens. nsw.gov.au/smartparking to register or learn more. Funds collected from smart parking will be reinvested into delivering Nelson Bay Next projects like improvements to public domain, landscaping, increased car parking and place activation. TWO Santa’s have been driving the Free Clinic Bus Service this week to say thank you to all their volunteer drivers. In lieu of their Christmas party, Ron Conaghan (Secretary) and Ray Peeters (President) donned Santa suits and delivered a Christmas cake with a bottle of wine to all the volunteers who have put in a great effort this past challenging year. The volunteers pick up and take patients to their medical appointments and to hospital visits, providing a critical community service. When COVID-19 restrictions commenced late last February, the bus ceased operations. However, with safety practices in place, services resumed on 1 July but remain limited to two patients and the driver. As the COVID-19 situation improves, the free clinic bus should be able to operate at full capacity The service operates on Tuesdays transporting patients to Raymond Terrace and Maitland.
It also operates Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays transporting patients to Raymond Terrace and Newcastle. Pick up can be arranged
from homes in Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, North Arm Cove, Bundabah, Pindimar and Karuah. The service is available to
all and being a pensioner is not a requirement. For enquiries contact the coordinator on 0403 657 195.
In the lead up to Christmas, one of Australia’s largest charities is encouraging Australians to keep farmers in need in their thoughts by hosting Christmas parties with a cause or buying a gift card for a primary producer family as a gift. CEO of Rural Aid John Warlters says it has been a particularly challenging year for the farming sector and a small gesture at Christmas time can have a major impact on rural families. “Drought, bushfire and flood are regular and devastating
realities for Australian farmers. These challenges create financial, emotional and practical hurdles for this crucial sector of our community and economy; the people who put food on our tables and clothes on our back,” Mr Warlters said. “This year has featured all of these challenges. Vast swathes of farmland are still in drought and, in addition, covid created new pressures for farmers this year. Domestic border closures impacted the supply chain for
farmers, and international border closures impacted the workforce of shearers and fruit pickers.” But, Mr Warlters said this festive season, Australians can make a difference in many ways. The gift of giving. Buy a gift card on the behalf of a friend or family member and make a real difference in the life of a farming family. www. ruralaid.org.au/christmas Buy your Christmas
Cards through us, and a percentage of the purchase will be given to farmers in need. www. charitygreetingcards.com.au/ charity/buy-a-bale.html Christmas party with a cause. Add a fun and inspiring theme to your party such as “dress like a farmer” and raise some funds for primary producers. GARDENING AUSTRALIA CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
ABC, 7.30pm
It’s been a long year, but the Gardening Australia</ i> team is looking on the bright side – more people are gardening than ever before. For the last show of 2020, they’re celebrating with a look at what has changed this year. Josh Byrne finds out how the nursery industry kept up with unprecedented demand for vegetable seedlings during lockdown. Looking to the Christmas table, Jane Edmanson discovers what it takes to produce the tonnes of delicious cherries Australia eats every summer, while Sophie Thomson whips up some tasteful decorations.
One of the best things to come out of 2020 for music fans has been getting the band back together for the Spicks and Specks specials. In this third and final instalment of their decade-themed episodes, Adam Hills, Myf Warhurst (pictured) and Alan Brough relive the music of the 2010s – the decade that brought us flossing, the Harlem Shake and Gangnam Style – with musicians Kate Miller-Heidke and Vance Joy alongside comedians Claire Hooper and Luke McGregor. Joy demonstrates a knowledge of Taylor Swift in “Know Your Product”, while Miller-Heidke takes the mic for everyone’s favourite game Substitute.
CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT
NBN, 8pm
For the past 82 years, Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl has lit up on Christmas Eve as friends, families and babes-in-arms gather to celebrate Christmas while raising funds for Vision Australia. This year, like almost everything else, the festive institution will look different – there won’t be a live audience to welcome hosts David Campbell (above) and Livinia Nixon to the stage. Instead, viewers are encouraged to join in virtually, using the hashtag #carolsathome to celebrate the spirit of the season with Carols favourites David Hobson, Marina Prior, Silvia Colloca and Silvie Paladino, as well as Eurovision royalty Dami. 1812

Endangered Little Terns Protected
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and volunteers from the Myall Koala & Environmental Group are working together to protect a nesting colony of endangered little terns on Corrie Island Nature Reserve, as part of the NSW Government’s Saving our Species Program. NSW Government Saving our Species Officer Christophe Tourenq said it was fantastic to see that little terns have returned to the island in the Lower Myall River mouth to breed this year. “We’re relieved to see that this colony of little terns has returned to Corrie Island to breed,” said Mr Tourenq. “Little terns have been recorded breeding on and off the island and the nearby beach of Winda Woppa since the 1950’s and probably much
earlier. “Volunteers from Myall Koala & Environmental Group have counted 60 nests so far this season, which is already the double of the number reached last year at the peak of the breeding season. “Little terns are endangered in NSW and sadly their populations are in decline. The big issue for little terns is that they breed during summer on beaches and sand spits – the same spaces where humans like to sit, camp and walk their unleashed dogs during the warm weather. “Their eggs and chicks are so well camouflaged against the sand; they are almost invisible and all too easy for people and their pets to disturb, or even crush, without noticing. Luckily, Corrie Island is relatively isolated, so we

hope they will have a better shot at a successful breeding season in 2020/21. “We’re asking members of the public to please ‘share the shore’, respect the signs, and to refrain from visiting the island during the breeding season, which runs from November to February. Eggs or chicks could be anywhere on the island above the high tide line. Volunteers have been essential in helping NPWS to gather data on shorebirds in the Port Stephens estuary. Since 2004, the Hunter Bird Observers Club have conducted summer surveys, and for the last four seasons, a small group of volunteers from the Myall Koala & Environmental Group have been monitoring and protecting the nesting birds on Corrie Island. Myall Koala & Environmental Group’s Trish Blair said, “It is a pleasure and a privilege for us to play a part in helping to collect data about the numbers and breeding

Dear Jasminda,
Mum has decided to be ethical this Christmas and she won't even buy a Christmas tree because they are plastic. She also won't buy a real one because 'plants have feelings too'. What about our feelings? Ms Chloe F.
WHY ARE REGIONAL MARKETS DOING SO WELL? “I seem to always be reading that regional markets, and ours is no exception, are doing so well right now yet city markets aren’t. Why do you think this is?” YOU’RE right.Much has been written about the property market this year and COVID-19 has further exposed the regional/urban divide. Urban markets actually rely a lot on overseas buyers. By that I don’t mean people who live overseas and simply invest here, but those who migrate to Australia to live. COVID-19 has stopped that for the foreseeable future and consequently urban markets have taken somewhat of a ‘hit’ as the pool of buyers diminishes. Regional markets however, draw from the cities and again, COVID-19 has played a significant role in people re-examining their priorities and lifestyles while the acceptance of working from home as the ‘new normal’ has given rise to a significant urban-regional exodus. Additionally, in order to boost regional economies, there are many subsidies offered to attract city dwellers to move to country areas, swelling the regional buyer pool. We’re seeing such buyer diversity across R&R’s five offices: Stroud, Gloucester, Forster, Bulahdelah and Port Stephens. And let’s face it, whether it’s a tree or sea change, our gorgeous region with stunning rural areas, amazing coastal towns and incredible infrastructure and employment opportunities has something for everyone. CONGRATULATIONS to Jack Nolan, recipient of the annual Lions Scholarship for 2021, and to Indianna McDonald, recipient of the 2020 Tea Gardens Lions Club Community Service Award. In his recorded presentation to Jack, Peter Webb, President of the Lions Club, stated, “Each year our club has the pleasure of providing a scholarship to a student, as they commence Secondary Schooling, to assist with educational aids such as textbooks, equipment and school excursions. “The recipient of this award must be a good school citizen and have shown consistent application and effort throughout their Primary Schooling years.” The Community Service Award of $100.00

Dear Chloe, Well, I don't want to be a Christmas grinch, but your mum has a point. Plastic Christmas trees are imported and you might not feel the same about the tree once you remember it is basically just a very fancy mass of petroleum chemicals. If your mum is worried about the plant's feelings, you can buy a lovely potted tree that costs around the same price and it will grow along with your family. There are some other alternatives if you want to break with tradition and keep your mum happy. A branch can look very stylish when adorned with decorations. If you use the decorations you already have, you'll be saving money and not adding to landfill. Alternatively, you can make your own decorations. Without getting all hippy trippy on you, Chloe, there are some great ideas on the Internet such as drying orange segments and making cinnamon stick bundles which will make your house smell amazing. I hope with the money your mum saves on her ethical decorating, she will buy you a wonderful present this year. Although, chances are she is possibly donating a goat or a chicken in your name and giving you some underwear made out of wood pulp. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

q The lolly run will start around 8.30am on Saturday December 19.
By Geoff WALKER HEY! If you are a little boy or girl out Tilligerry way you are in for a treat.
