WITH events planned at four locations across the local government area, Port Stephens is et to celebrate its biggest Australia Day yet, with Citizenship Ceremonies, live music, markets, marching bands, pool parties and fireworks

Mayor Ryan Palmer is inviting the community to attend an event, reflect on our achievements, and celebrate Port Stephens and the people who make it great.

“This year’s theme is ‘Reflect. Respect. Celebrate.’, which encourages locals to reflect on our history, respect the stories of others, and celebrate Port Stephens, our achievements and our people,” Mayor Palmer said.

“Right across the LGA, there’ll be something for everyone.

“There’s a big Aussie breakfast, live music, kids entertainment, markets and

displays by the RAAF, Rural Fire Service, and NSW Fire Brigade.

“The traditional Civic Ceremonies, including Citizenship Ceremonies and Annual Awards will also take place as usual. I’m excited and honoured to officially welcome our region’s 83 newest Australians as they take the pledge in front of friends and family this 26 January,” he said.

Once the formalities are over, celebrations will continue with pool parties at Lakeside Leisure Centre and Tilligerry Aquatic Centres, with celebrations culminating in a fireworks display at Karuah at 9pm.

Mayor Palmer also announced the 2023 Port Stephens Australia Day Ambassador as Professor Heidi Norman, a descendant of the Gomeroi people from north western NSW, and a leading Australian researcher and

Aboriginal political historian.

“Professor Norman has led research in the field of Aboriginal political history and has made significant contributions to understanding Aboriginal social, cultural, economic and political history,” he said.

Professor Norman says that teaching has been her passion and focus of her work for more than two decades at the University of Technology Sydney.

“The three strands of our Australian story – our ancient heritage, British inheritance, and multicultural triumph –are unique in the world,” said Professor Norman.

“For many generations the telling of this history was described as ‘the great Australian silence’; still today my students, after a semester studying Aboriginal history, ask: ‘Why

weren’t we told? Why didn’t we know?’.

“The lens of history helps me comprehend the present.

“It’s the knowledge of the past that helps me make informed decisions.

“I look forward to sharing about my story and passion this Australia Day as the 2023 Port Stephens Australia Day Ambassador,” Heidi added.

PORT STEPHENS is experiencing a bumper holiday season.

One winner from this increased visitation has been Port Stephens Council managed Holiday Parks.

The Area, “Current occupancy percentages for the main summer school holiday period are approximately 80 percent.”

For the region the peak holiday occupancy is traditionally between Christmas Eve and approximately 10 January.

This year Council managed parks have enjoyed occupancy

The current average length of stay is around nine nights.

around twelve hours to complete.”

The artwork was inspired by another of Rhys’ works, which appears on a garage door at Boat Harbour, which the Corlette property owner saw while out walking.

For those who choose to seek it out there are several art installations around the local area; from the amazing sculptures by Braddon Snape at Vantage Estate to the Sea Urchins at Nelson Bay Marina Foreshore by Kelly Anne Lees.

Time To Check Electoral Roll

NOW is the time to check that you are correctly enrolled to vote in the upcoming State Election.

For those who have just turned eighteen, the 25 March election will be their first opportunity to have their say on who governs our state.

Commissioner John Schmidt said with polling day fast approaching, now was a great time to get election ready.

“Whether you need to enrol for the first time, update your details or just check where you are enrolled, it’s quick and easy to do online.

“Go to www.elections. nsw.gov.au and you’ll get all the information you need.”

The 2022 Port Stephens Annual Awards nominees are: Heather Buckingham

For the last 30 years, Heather Buckingham has played a major role at the St John's Parish Pantry.

Heather is a continual force, collecting donations and volunteering every week to provide food and kindness to needy families.

In addition, Heather has coordinated Christmas Hampers for families who can’t afford to buy gifts for most of her 30 years with the Pantry.

Heather has dedicated decades of work to our local community including welcoming and supporting families by helping with employment and study, providing guidance with life in a new country, celebrating birthdays, including them in family Christmas celebrations and even attending school grandparent days.

Robert Bull

Robert Bull was a founding member of the Raymond Terrace Men’s shed in 2010, and has been president of the shed nine times.

He’s now an active and lifetime member in Raymond Terrace and also a member of Australian Men’s Shed Association.

As initiator of the Raymond Terrace men's shed band, Robert has been responsible for the shed performing at many external public functions and nursing homes within the community.

He works closely with the Raymond Terrace RSL in planning Anzac Day ceremonies and instigated the men’s shed contributions at the Back to King Street Heritage Festival.

Roy Cameron

Roy Cameron is a lifetime member of Raymond Terrace and District Tennis Club Inc. since the club first approached Council for support to build the courts.

He was the Project Coordinator, overseeing the construction of the Club House in 1976, and the first six courts following this.

Roy and his wife were made Life Members in 1984 and Roy has been on the Club Committee for over 25 years.

He continues to help to maintain the eight tennis courts on a weekly basis and in his own time.

Roy's tireless contribution in maintaining the courts has allowed many tennis games to be played by members of the public, school children and club members.

Roy also continues to assist in promoting the game of Tennis to Raymond Terrace and the local district.

Gabrielle Carrick

For the last two years, Gabrielle Carrick has been the graphic designer for all Tomaree Museum Association (TMA) exhibitions and artistic presentations.

Gabrielle leads the design exhibition spaces for TMA pop up museums, such as D'albora Nelson Bay, Port Stephens Art Competition and the exhibition at the Nelson Bay Visitor Information Centre.

Gabrielle has volunteered her time and used her considerable expertise gained through a lifetime of work in this area to produce very professional results for the TMA and the Port Stephens Community.

Her contribution and passion towards the preservation and promotion of Port Stephens cultural and artistic heritage is outstanding.

Jodi Cassar

Jodi Cassar has been an active role model for netball in Port Stephens for over three decades now and is the current President of Port Stephens Netball Association.

Jodi spends many hours of her time ensuring that grassroots participation in the game of netball is provided for girls and boys young and old across our community.

Accessibility and inclusion is an important role of the game that Jodi promotes with all programs offered under Netball NSW, being offered at Port Stephens Netball Association.

This includes the recently introduced Inclusive Netball Uniforms policy introduced by Netball Australia and the growth in boys and mens pathways.

She’s also helped to instigate the inclusion of Acknowledgement of Country prior to all meetings and at the commencement of each playing day.

Jodi is a Life Member of Medowie Netball Club and also Port Stephens Netball Association and was awarded the Netball NSW Dot McHugh OAM Administrators Award in late 2022 in recognition of the outstanding leadership and management of the administration of netball in the Port Stephens community.

Darrell Dawson

Darrell Dawson has been prominent in protecting native wildlife and habitat for the benefit of the Port Stephens community.

Through his involvement in numerous committees, he’s been instrumental in the development of some of the most iconic environmental features of Port Stephens.

This includes the protection of the Tomaree National Park and working towards protecting the waters of Port Stephens from pollution and large scale commercial aquaculture development.

He was also instrumental in the protection of the Mambo Wetlands and large areas of local koala habitat.

Darrell successfully established the grassroots organisation EcoNetwork Port Stephens Inc. in 1993 that now represents 30 affiliated community groups, and businesses and has a membership of approximately 3000 individuals in Port Stephens.

This has all been done with the aim of bringing together the various active environmental and sustainability groups in the LGA, under one network.

In 2022, they were presented to Councillors at a Council Meeting and Casey is now working with council staff on a new program of Koala awareness signage.

Emma Newcombe

Emma Newcombe is an outstanding student, contributing positively to the local community through a wide range of activities and volunteer work.

Emma has been a driving force in the development of the Café Alesco becoming an integral part of its operation and management.

If you’ve ever visited Café Alesco in the Raymond Terrace Library you might recognise Emma from front of house operations and her excellent customer service skills.

Alesco aims to reduce barriers to accessing education, so students are able to engage and participate in education to the best of their abilities, whilst gently challenging their potential.

Emma encompasses Alesco’s values, is respectful and is always willing to help her teachers, peers, local community and encompasses the Alesco spirit in all she does – overall she’s an outstanding young lady.

Amanda Phillips

Amanda (Mandy) Phillips is the owner/operator of ‘Mandy’s Cleaning Service’, offering a highly detailed service at affordable prices, ensuring our community can access cleaning support during hard times.

Mandy has helped countless families in need by providing them with food and work opportunities.

Mandy assists anyone who reaches out, displaying true community spirit.

She offers payment plans to help those in the community who are facing financial hardship.

By offering this service, Mandy is ensuring that those who are doing it tough are able to access appropriate services and have food security.

Brooke Roach

Brooke Roach has dedicated his life to creating a better life for everyone in the local community, with a particular focus on young Aboriginal people.

Brooke works as the Aboriginal Liaison Officer at Hunter River High School and has volunteered his time to lead the Raymond Terrace Magpies Rugby League Football Club as its President, co-coach the premiershipwinning C-Grade Men's team, work with community organisations, introduce sports and the associated discipline to many people's lives, advocate for better access to services for Aboriginal people across our whole community, and continues to inspire and be a community role model.

Brooke is a Raymond Terrace legend, hard worker, a community leader and aspires to make life better for others.

“The area has grown massively - everyone knows Medowie desperately needs a public high school, except the Liberals.

“I have been fighting for a public high school in Medowie since before I was elected to Parliament.

"The upcoming state election couldn't be clearer.

“If the families of Medowie, Williamtown, Karuah, Salt Ash and the Tilligerry Peninsula want to see a public high school built in Medowie, they should vote for Labor,” Ms Washington said.

Why was Gan Gan Road cottage knocked down without a DA?

IN DECEMBER, local residents were outraged by the demolition of a cottage and the removal of a large tree without a Development Application (DA) consent at 140 Gan Gan Road, Anna Bay.

Council investigation as to why the home was demolished without approval was then launched.

Council has since reached an outcome, but are unwilling to share the details with the community.

A Council spokesperson told News Of The Area, “Council is in receipt of all

requested information for the demolition, asbestos removal and tip receipts.

“Officers have taken the appropriate compliance action with the property owner.

“Council now consider that the matter has been closed and we have no further comment,” they said.

PORT Stephens residents will have access to a state-ofthe-art MRI service on their doorstep that cuts down scan times and provides improved diagnostic capabilities.

Hunter Imaging Salamander Bay will open appointments for the Medicare-funded MRI service from January 16, which will not only improve accessibility for local residents, but also lead to positive impacts on

The machine, a 1.5 Magnetom Sola MRI, offers patients and referrers alike access to state of the art cardiac MRI imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, neurological imaging, spinal imaging and highend abdominal and pelvic imaging.

FOR many, the beginning of a new year brings with it resolutions to increase their personal wellbeing.

While embarking on a journey of personal improvement can be a challenge, Positive Psychology and Wellbeing Practitioner, Kerri Rodley, has provided tips for getting started.

“Finding time to work on your wellbeing should be a high priority,” said Kerri.

“If you don't, who will?”

She recommends that you make space in your day to switch off - even for a few minutes - to relax and rejuvenate yourself.

“Do something you enjoy every day,” she said.

“Take time out and do something that makes you happy each and every day.

“It doesn’t matter how small: a cup of coffee in the sun, a read of your favourite book, a bath, walking the dog - whatever!

“Connect with peoplewhether it’s on the phone, online or in person – a quick chat with a friend or family member could make all the difference to both of you.

“It is a scientific fact that connecting with others helps reduce stress.”

Kerri also recommends spending time in the natural world.

“Get some fresh air/

exercise in nature,” she said.

“Take some time out and enjoy the nature around you.

“Exercising outside creates greater feelings of positive thinking and happiness than working out indoors.

“A study found that people who engaged in physical activity outdoors had 1.5 times increased positive mental health and decreased mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

“Port Stephens is full of

nature!”

Trying something new can also make a difference, according to Kerri.

“Try something new - whether it’s taking up a new sport, finding a new walking route or getting artistic with activities like drawing and painting – find an activity you can look forward to and concentrate on.

“Joining a class or group can help you connect with new people too.”

Kerri’s final tip is to practise gratitude through

journaling.

“Gratitude forces you to look for the positive, rather than the negative, aspects in your daily life.

“Writing it down invites your brain to relive that situation, which doubles the positive impact it has on your life.”

Fiona Brown of Youtopia Wellbeing recommends setting SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound).

“Only 20 percent of people set goals, and only

Port Stephens Art Prize seeking entries

THE not-for-profit Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is aiming to showcase the works of national, regional and local artists, and to promote Port Stephens as a cultural destination worthy of a visit.

The prestigious 15th Port Stephens Art Prize will be held from 24 March to 2 April 2023.

Artists from across Australia are encouraged to enter with entries closing on 11 February 2023.

There are six sections to the Port Stephens Art Prize, and only 400 entries will be accepted.

Entry is via the Arts Centre’s website at www. artscentrenelsonbay.org.au.

The judges are Karen Bloomfield and Alana CliftonCunningham, who will judge textiles.

Categories in the art prize include Painting, Drawing, Mixed Media, Textiles, Miniatures and Photography.

Prizes range from $250 to $1,500 for various categories, with the people's choice award winner taking out a $250 prize.

President of the Arts Centre, Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “Viewing the Art Prize exhibition is free and all works will be for sale during the ten days from 24 March to 2 April 2023.”

The gallery will be open from 10:00am to 4:00pm daily, except for the last day of the exhibition when the Centre closes at 2:00pm.

Pre-School to Pre-Professional Training at Studio 2324

STUDIO 2324 in Raymond Terrace has been teaching dance in Port Stephens for 30 years.

In this time the dance school has evolved to catering from Pre-School dancers to Pre-Professional training,

offering VET courses for those wanting to pursue a career in dance.

The most popular PreSchool dance lessons are the ‘Ready Set Dance’ classes which run most weekday mornings.

“The team at Studio 2324 are experienced and passionate about providing a fun and positive experience for our preschoolers,” said Studio 2324 Principal Karen Suttie.

TANILBA’S Pat Caddy was somewhat overwhelmed when her wider family turned up in early January to celebrate her 90th birthday.

Around thirty of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, her sister, niece and friends made the occasion truly memorable for the long time

resident and community worker.

It also brought the family together to interact and relive happy memories of the past.

The family album says it all: a newspaper clipping where she seeks more parents to help her run the youth club, and a photo of her resplendent in her gown as Matron of Honour at a

Almost half of Aussie families will have post-Christmas debt

Christmas has pushed millions of Aussies into debt, according to new research.

A Finder survey of 1,086 respondents revealed almost half (49 percent) of Australians –equivalent to 9.8 million people – have racked up

Christmas debt.

The research found one in three (36 percent) will take up to five months to pay off their festive debt, while eight percent will take at least six months or more.

A further four percent –equivalent to over 800,000 people – say it will take them twelve months or more

to settle.

Millennials went on the biggest spending spree, with two in three (71 percent) accumulating debt, compared to gen X (39 percent).

Amy Bradney-George, credit card expert at Finder, said it's supposed to be the most wonderful time

of the year, but for many Australians, the holiday season can also be a source of financial stress.

“The expectations around buying gifts for loved ones, travelling to see family and other holiday activities can lead to overspending and more reliance on credit.

“With the added financial strain from the rising costof-living, many people are finding it harder to stay within their budget and

avoid falling into debt.”

Bradney-George said making a budget is key to eliminating holiday season debt.

“A budget helps you take stock of the money that’s coming in and going out.

“Seeing your income, expenses and debts in one place can also help you prioritise your financial goals and avoid overspending.

“Look for ways to

trim your spending on things like dining out, entertainment, and unnecessary purchases.

“Consider setting a spending limit for yourself and avoiding unnecessary purchases until you've paid off your Christmas debt.”

Men overspent the most with 55 percent carrying some level of Christmas debt, compared to 43 percent of women.

Mambo Wetlands Walks return in February

MAMBO Wanda Wetlands is an amazing ecological wonderland with a variety of native flora and fauna.

Mambo Walks will be happening again this February after a two year hiatus, giving the public valuable insights into the importance of this site.

Irene Jones, President of the Mambo Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group said, “It’s wonderful to be back, helping people appreciate this great natural asset, right in the middle of Salamander Bay.”

The walks are the first activity marking the 30 year anniversary celebrations of EcoNetwork Port Stephens.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February.

“By spreading the tours over several dates and times we have been able to engage with a greater variety of speakers,” added Ms Jones.

“We have Kate and Taylar from Port Stephens Council talking about coastal vegetation.

“Trudy and Bruce Pease are experienced fisheries

scientists who will take people through the wetlands at high tide to talk about the impact of increased water flows since the construction of the new bridge on Foreshore Drive.”

Renowned bird authority Neil Fraser will share his knowledge on the birds of Mambo in the comfort of the Tomaree Library, while Nigel Dique will explain why Ramsar designations are so important

for wetlands all over the world.

Carol Ridgeway Bissett has supported Mambo Walks in previous years and her tours are always heavily booked.

Carol is a traditional custodian and knowledge holder of the local Maiangal people.

“She has a depth of knowledge about local animal and plant life which she so generously shares as well

as educating us about the cultural significance of Mambo and Wanda wetlands,” said Ms Jones.

Iain Watt, President of EcoNetwork Port Stephens and a marine scientist, will escort and guide a walking group along the foreshore to explore the exciting world of mangroves.

National Parks Association urges people to have their say

THE National Parks Association of NSW (NPA) is urging people to have their say about the native vegetation provisions of the Local Land Services Act.

The consultation period was originally set to expire on December 19, but according to the NPA, because of pressure from conservation groups, the NSW Government has extended the consultation for the Native Vegetation Codes until January 27.

The NPA says the rollback of strong biodiversity laws has led to a thirteen-fold increase in land clearing, putting vulnerable wildlife and habitats at risk.

Danielle Ryan, a conservation campaigner for the NPA said, “I feel that if more locals are aware about this consultation, they would

want to participate and share their views.”

She is urging people to inform themselves of the issues and respond to the consultation.

The NPA has a number of issues with the review and has made a series of recommendations.

It wants the current review suspended in favour of a more comprehensive review that acknowledges the impacts of the current regulations on biodiversity and adheres to principles that ensure no further species or ecosystem losses.

This would entail an immediate moratorium on large-scale land clearing and clearing of known threatened ecosystems and habitat for wildlife, pending the outcomes of the review.

The NPA asks the NSW Government separately investigates options for providing greater support for regenerative agricultural practices that enhance vegetation, biodiversity, nutrition, water cycling, soils, forests, perennial pastures and catchments.

Other recommendations include better education of involved parties, improved monitoring and greater penalties for non-compliance.

“My great grandfather was a red cedar cutter in the northern rivers, before society understood the widespread impacts of clearing native forest,” Ms Ryan said.

“I believe it is up to current generations to right a wrong - ignorance is no longer an excuse for pushing species towards extinction.”

Ms Ryan said that to compensate for the part her family played in wiping out the highly-prized red cedar, she intends to restore a 40-hectare bush block established by her grandfather that she has coinherited.

“As a private landholder, I want to see an end to largescale clearing today,” she said.

“I want to restore and protect this patch of forest for my daughter and generations to come.”

The NPA said it encourages the community to take advantage of the extended consultation deadline because it is a vital opportunity for the public to share their views about why they want to see biodiversity laws reformed, to protect NSW’s vulnerable wildlife and habitats for generations to come.

Police unveil enhanced online Sexual Assault Reporting Option

THE NSW Police Force has unveiled an enhanced online reporting option to allow victims of sexual assault to provide information without having to take part in a formal police interview.

While police always encourage victims of any crime to make a formal report, it is acknowledged that for a number of reasons, victims of sexual assault often do not wish to speak about their experiences nor speak with police and go through the legal process.

The NSW Police Force’s Sexual Assault Reporting Option (SARO) has been in existence since 2012, allowing victims to report a sexual assault without any obligation to participate in further lines of inquiry.

From Friday 13 January 2023, the SARO is accessed through the online Community Portal and is available in twelve languages, making the reporting option more accessible to victims.

This replaces the old process of printing and

completing a fourteen-page document and emailing the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad.

NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole said the advancement in the online reporting system puts victims of sexual assault first when reporting and investigating these serious crimes.

“While we want to stop would-be perpetrators before it’s too late, it’s absolutely critical we take a victim-focused approach to supporting those involved through the reporting option,” Mr Toole said.

“Through the hard work of those involved in the Sexual Violence Project, NSW Police have been able to identify ways to better support victims through their journey and to also ensure we take all opportunities to reduce offending.

“While the online portal does not commence a police investigation, it empowers victims of sexual assault to take the first step and record their sexual assault, whether or not they wish at a later date to have the matter

investigated.

“The NSW Government is committed to providing the best services and support for victims of crime, and I am passionate about this project and what it can do to help those in vulnerable positions come forward on their own terms.”

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said this is an important step forward to help victim-survivors of sexual violence retain control over their level of contact with police and what happens next.

“For many victimsurvivors, a police investigation and court process are the farthest thing from their mind and often they feel further traumatised through the process,” Commissioner Webb said.

“We understand and recognise that a successful prosecution is not always the desired outcome or the only measure of success.

“Victims can report via SARO anonymously without further contact from police, or they can elect to be identified and request that police follow up in certain circumstances.

Smart Parking permits renewed until 30 June 2024

THERE was plenty of angst and frustration when Port Stephens locals were required to sign up for the free Smart Parking permit access to areas such as the Nelson Bay CBD.

The meters were first turned on in December 2020, and after confusion around when the permits needed to be renewed, Council has

offered clarification.

A representative of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “The permits originally were due to expire two years from the original sign ups (roughly December 2022).

“We previously discussed and agreed to automatically renew the permits past this expiry date, through to 30 June 2024.

“At this stage people will

be required to renew their permits prior to this date.”

Residents can rest assured that they won’t be caught out without notice as Council went on to confirm, ”Our Smart Parking team have confirmed that there will be communication leading up to the expiry date regarding the renewal of permits, so people are made aware and have a chance to renew before the permit validity lapses.”

Deputy Commissioner Operations Alex Barrell has asked boaters to ensure they are well prepared and to take it easy on the State’s waterways after a surge in boating rescues during December.

During October and November there were 707 rescues performed across the State, just over eleven

per day.

In December the number of rescues surged to 602 with nearly 20 rescues performed each day, over half of which were for boats with flat batteries, engine failure or who had run out of fuel.

Nominations open for awards recognising outstanding local women in sport

LOCAL champions and young achievers in sport will be recognised as part of the NSW Government’s Her Sport Her Way Awards, with nominations now open.

Member of the Legislative Council, Aileen MacDonald, said the Her Sport Her Way Awards celebrate and honour the achievements of women and organisations that are breaking down barriers for women’s sport in NSW.

“The Her Sport Her Way Awards recognise the achievements of women and organisations in driving powerful change and leaving a legacy for the way women’s sport is played in NSW,” Mrs MacDonald said.

“Women make such an incredible contribution to sporting clubs and organisations across our community and if you know a local who is going above and beyond for the sport they love, nominate them for these awards.”

The Her Sport Her Way Awards feature five

categories – Young Achiever, Local Champion, Outstanding Organisation, Trailblazer and Overall Champion.

Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said the awards are part of the NSW Government’s women in sport strategy, Her Sport Her Way.

“This program is all about increasing female participation in sport, whether that’s on the field or in administration, coaching and volunteer roles,” Mr Henskens said.

“Since the inception of this program four years ago, the number of women and girls playing sport has sky-rocketed, and by investing in grassroots programs and initiatives across NSW, we will continue to secure a brighter future for women in sport.”

Future Women Rural Scholarship Program

THE LATEST round of the Future Women Rural Scholarship Program was launched this week, designed to help women living in regional, rural and remote NSW achieve their goals.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said 24 scholarships valued at over $6,000 each are available to women from regional, rural and remote parts of the State to develop their leadership skills.

“There are so many amazing women leading communities, leading businesses and leading critical conversations in the bush - and we want to encourage those wanting to step up and do the same,” Mr Toole said.

“This program is a great chance for 24 women from all corners of the State to supercharge their leadership potential.”

Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said the program has been an overwhelming success and encouraged women from all corners of regional and rural NSW to take up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“This program equips our region’s future female leaders with the tools and knowledge they need to accelerate their road to success,” Mrs Taylor said.

“Whether you’re a small business owner, farmer or one of our wonderful healthcare workers, this program is for you.”

Recipients receive a place in the Future Women Platinum+ Program worth $6,000, where they will take part in networking,

mentoring and digital learning opportunities.

Recipients will also be invited to attend the Future Women Leadership Summit on 6 and 7 March 2023 to celebrate International Women’s Day.

One of last year’s recipients, Ruby Riethmuller, a Riverina based Youth Mental Health Advocate and the Founder and Director of Womn-Kind, found the connections and personal development the program offered immensely valuable.

While I appreciate that you are a movie buff, I can't quite fathom that you would end a relationship due to what is probably a subconscious, nervous habit.

We all have irritating predispositions and in the scheme of annoying habits - binge eating, nose picking, smoking, open-mouthed chewing, compulsive swearing - nail picking seems relatively innocuous.

Perhaps she is bored senseless by your movie selections.

Or maybe you select horror movies that scare the living daylights out of her and she's too polite to say anything, so she has to pick her nails as a form of selfsoothing.

Instead of thinking of ending the relationship, you could hold one of her hands, a romantic gesture that will kill two birds with one stone.

Or you could give her a relaxing hand massage.

Maybe you just need to turn up the volume so you can't hear nail-picking antics.

Another option could be to treat her to a manicure - some gel nails may prevent the habit.

Frankly, if you would consider leaving someone due to such an innocent vice, I think nail picking is the least of your problems.

Commodore’s Cup

Yacht Club competed in the annual Commodore's Cup last weekend.

A fleet of fourteen vessels competed in two races which saw strong competition in challenging weather conditions.

There was little to no wind at the start line for the first race and strong gusts which challenged the skippers on the course which left from

near the Soldiers Point Boat ramp on a windward leg up the bay to the ‘wedding cake’ marker near the entrance to the channel to Tea Gardens and back.

Spinnakers were flying on some vessels on the return leg of the course.

The provisional results for race one saw Bellamy come in first with Friends second and She’s The One, the Commodore's yacht, taking out third place.

was Adios with Jia taking out second place and Gift Horse taking out third place despite having been set back with a wine glass in her spinnaker after turning the mark at Wedding Cake.

BIRUBI and One Mile Beach are set to host the NSW Vissla Pro Surf Series 2023 in February.

The elite three-day World Surf League (QSL) Qualifying Series 1000 event will commence just days after the action at the Camplify Great Lakes Pro QS3000 concludes, making for a perfect NSW road trip.

It is estimated that over 150 of Australia’s top tier athletes will venture to the Port Stephens region to continue their quest to gain valuable points towards their overall QS ranking.

Best of all this is a great spectators event and one that keen photographs will truly enjoy.

Each year, the Surfers Rescue 24/7 Port Stephens Pro competition shifts between One Mile Beach and Birubi Beach, depending on the
