JOINING with Squadron association members and veterans, Royal Australian Air Force personnel from Number 2 Squadron held a commemorative event at RAAF Base Williamtown on 3 November 2020 to honour Australian Defence Force members who fought in the Vietnam War. The commemorative program acknowledged the 50th Anniversary of two Australian airmen who lost their lives during the conflict. On 3 November 1970, a RAAF No. 2 Squadron Canberra Bomber (tail no A84-231), call sign ‘Magpie 91’, went down near the Laotian-Vietnamese border after completing a successful bombing mission in support of United States ground

Command and Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) subsequently launched a SAR operation to locate the yacht and bring the men back to shore. About 10.30am on Tuesday (10 November 2020), AMSA launched a Challenger jet and dropped fuel, supplies, and a satellite phone, which enabled contact between the SAR crews and the yachtsmen. The Marine Area Command subsequently launched a police vessel, which met up with the Solar Coaster on Thursday (12 November 2020).

THE Port Stephens Community Arts Centre’s member Robyn Killen is the Feature Artist at the centre. Robyn also devotes endless hours of her time volunteering at the Art Centre. She is the go-to person for the centre's 400 members, always assisting and finding solutions to any issue that may arise. Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “It’s a wonder that she has any time for pursuing her great love of oil painting. “Our members are proud of the fact that Robyn received a Port Stephens Medal in the inaugural Cultural Endeavour category from the Port Stephens Council on Australia Day 2018,” she said. Art has always held a high priority in Robyn's life leading her into a commercial arts course at East Sydney Technical

College. This stopped abruptly when she married and went to live in the beautiful Bylong Valley before moving to Nelson Bay with her family in 1979. Robyn’s love of nature and drawing was ever evident and in 2OO7 time allowed her to pursue her love of painting. Courses in watercolour and acrylic and attending workshops under the guidance of a highly regarded Australian traditional landscape oil painter have served to confirm Robyn's love of landscape painting. Robyn is now a very accomplished artist in the use of oils, her works being highly sought after locally and interstate. “At the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre we are so lucky that Robyn took up art and that she is able to share her passion for art and her leadership skills for the benefit of our community,” she said.

Williamtown RAAF hold 50th Anniversary of airmen lost in Vietnam forces. The aircrew were Flying Officer Michael Herbert (Pilot) and Pilot Officer Robert Carver (Navigator). The last known radio transmission to the crew were from US ground controllers who praised their efforts by reporting ‘that was an excellent run Sirs”. The cause of the crash remains unknown. Following the incident, 2 Squadron and the United States Air Force searched for the pair for three days, eventually declaring Herbert and Carver as missing in action. Their remains were eventually found and repatriated by a Defence Historical Unit on 31 August 2009 arriving back in Australia on 1 September. The “Magpie 91” event program at RAAF

Williamtown, conducted 50 years to the day of the aircraft’s downing on operations, included a memorial service and colours parade held in the Squadron hangar, acknowledging the service and sacrifice of the airmen lost. This was followed by a No. 2 Squadron E-7A Wedgetail flypast over the event area - performed in the airmen’s honour. Commanding Officer - No. 2 Squadron, Wing Commander Jason Brown said the aircraft participating in the flypast holds great historical significance as it is adorned with commemorative nose-art completed by personnel deployed on Operation OKRA in 2020: “The nose-art combines the 2 Squadron lightning bolt emblem with the Unit’s World War II and Vietnam War decorations that include a United States Presidential Unit Citation, a Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with

Palm, and a United States Air Force Outstanding Unit Commendation. “As 2SQN has recently returned from operations in the Middle East – we remember those who have come before us and we honor their memory through our service contributions today.” Delivering the memorial speech, Commander Surveillance and Response Group, Air Commodore Barbara Courtney, AM acknowledged the significance of the commemorative event, “Today we pay tribute to Flying Officer Herbert and Pilot Officer Carver and their families as we remember their courage, bravery, service and sacrifice. “We come together as one Air Force family with personnel from Number 2 Squadron past and present and honor these airmen - and ‘all’ those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the

Seeking Civic Pride Volunteers

By Marian SAMPSON

NELSON Bay underwent a major facelift nearly two years ago when over 70 community volunteers rolled up their sleeves to create a better Nelson Bay. Today there’s still work to be done to keep the township looking friendly and more amenable. While Council is planning to add parklets along some of the streets to increase COVID-19 safe dining options for residents and visitors. Business Port Stephens is still operating its Civic Pride Group. The group is powered by community volunteers who take on ownership of the amenity look and feel of the town. It is responsible for the bright painted pots in the streetscape and for maintaining the garden beds around town. Leah Anderson President of Business Port Stephens told News Of The Area, "We are keen to see more people getting involved in the Nelson Bay Civic Pride group as volunteers. "The group assists with watering and weeding gardens, and identifying

areas where the Chamber can work with Council to create improvements within the town precinct," she said. Business Port Stephens is

seeking additional volunteers who may be available for an hour or two to assist in keeping the towns gardens looking bright and fresh.

Business Port Stephens’ Business Connect program has established committees for Nelson Bay, Anna Bay, Salamander Bay and Shoal

Bay that meet on a regular basis. This provides opportunity for these precincts to network and work together on matters of interest or concern to them including creating more vibrant spaces and engaging volunteers to assist

in maintaining the ambiance of our townships, and main street business precincts. You can find out about becoming a Nelson Bay Civic Pride volunteer by contacting the team at the Chamber at www.businessportstephens. com.au.

Residents to have say on future war on waste WHAT happens to waste after it goes in the bin has been a focus over recent years with the ABC’s War on Waste. Now, Port Stephens Council is asking residents what they think the future should look like as part of its new waste strategy. Council’s Waste Management Coordinator

Chris Cannard says the new Waste Strategy will help plan for how waste will be managed into the future. “Community awareness about where our waste goes has grown in recent years, thanks in part to programs like the ABC’s War on Waste,” Mr Cannard said.

Community Quilt Project By Heather SHARP

AWARD-winning quilt maker and designer, Mrs Clare Lewis has this year organised 22 quilters to participate in the Community Quilt Challenge project organised through Novocastrian Quilts. All quilters were given the same panel of fabric, donated by Kennard and Kennard Fabrics, to use as inspiration and the basis for making a quilt in a design of their choice. The resulting creations showcase the talent and skill in quilters across the region and as far north as Grafton and down to Canberra. Quilters responded to Clare’s call out through her Never Ending Quilting business and donated their time, expertise, and additional

fabric, backing, and binding for the quilts to be donated to a variety of charities. Participating quilter, Mrs Ursula Fairless told News Of The Area, “This year has been disruptive for all of us and this project has given all quilters something to focus on.” “So many people have given something to the project during this difficult time.” Mrs Lewis told News Of The Area “The quilts will be divided up between a number of charities including the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, nursing homes, to support victims of domestic violence, and homeless shelters.” “Some will be used as a raffle to raise funds and others will be given directly to a person in need, for example, for someone in hospital a quilt can brighten up an otherwise

terrible time.” “Participating in the Quilt Challenge makes someone who receives the quilt feel like someone cares. “It feels good to make them, but the receiving part is really important too, especially this year.” “Until you are in this situation, you won’t understand the impact it has on the receiver.” This year, quilt shows have been cancelled, Clare’s own quilting classes have been readjusted and rewritten for an online format, with projects redesigned to smaller projects when face to face classes have been held in case lock down happened again. Mrs Barbara Read said, “I love doing anything for charity.” “By doing challenges, it

makes you use your brain and this challenge lifted everyone’s spirits.”

Clare Lewis said, “When I did the call out in August, people were in a COVID slump, so this

gave everyone something to focus on and to achieve.”

“It’s why our community love to live here and it’s why people flock to Port Stephens,” Ms Gardner said. “The coast is constantly changing and that’s why we’re developing a coastal management program to make sure we look after it for future generations. “We’re now up to stage 2,

which involves looking at the main hazards to the coastline in Port Stephens. “We’ve found out these are coastal erosion, coastal inundation and windblown sand. “We’re hosting a series of webinars with technical experts in November to help our community understand these hazards better and give an opportunity to ask

questions. “Anyone in Port Stephens who lives near the coast or who loves using the coast — whether it’s the Port, the beach or the river — is invited to come along and learn more about how we can protect it now and into the future,” she said. All webinars will be recorded and made available online for viewing. The webinar on Coastal

inundation will be held on Monday 23 November from 5 to 6pm and the webinar on Coastal erosion will take place on Wednesday 25 November from 12 midday to 1pm. To register for the webinars and have your say, head to haveyoursay. p o r t s t e p h e n s . n s w. g o v. au/coastal-managementprogram.

Coastal webinars on offer PORT Stephens is known for its spectacular coastline and now locals have an opportunity to have their say on how it is managed into the future. Port Stephens Council is currently working on a coastal management program (CMP), which identifies risks to the coast

and sets a long-term strategy for managing these into the future. Strategy and Environment Section Manager Janelle Gardner says Council will be holding a series of webinars for locals to learn more about the coast. “Our coast is one of our greatest assets.

Changed traffic conditions MOTORISTS are advised of changed traffic conditions on Nelson Bay Road at Stockton for essential maintenance work to be carried out on Stockton Bridge. Transport for NSW is carrying out work to strengthen the bridge, to ensure its ongoing structural integrity and its continued ability to carry heavy vehicles. Work started on Monday 16 November with the installation of scaffolding for

q

external bridge works. Work will be carried out between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday and is expected to be completed in nine months, weather permitting. A detour will be in place until Wednesday 30 June 2021 for heavy vehicles of over 68 tonnes travelling northbound towards Stockton or southbound towards Newcastle, onto Hexham Bridge via the M1 Pacific

Highway or Nelson Bay Road and then Cabbage Tree Road. There will be limited impacts on light vehicle traffic as most of the work will be carried out from the scaffolding located under the bridge. To reduce impact to motorists, most of the major work will be carried out at night, with traffic control in place and one lane each way open at all times.

Work started on Monday 16 November.

Yachett Point Reserve Vandalised By Marian SAMPSON

THE environment is under siege in parkland at Soldiers Point where it appears even more trees have been vandalised. Local residents have reported an additional nine mature casuarinas are dead or dying, with four mature lush lower growing shrubs/trees along with four additional immature casuarinas which all appear to be dead. This is in addition to a major act of vandalism which impacted over 27 mature trees and a large area of the forests understory, in the same reserve which is being investigated by Council. The estimated cost to remediate the previously reported vandalism is in the vicinity of $60,000. A cost which will be borne by local ratepayers. However while residents fight to save koala habitat at Brandy Hill, it is abhorrent to many that residents are actively destroying koala habitat and corridors, simply to improve their views and outlooks. Local resident Cherylle Stone told News Of The Area, “I have been observing the trees for a

few months hoping they would recover with regular watering from rainfall but they have not. Cherylle has resided here for over 35 years, and has always highly valued the reserve which is located between her property and the water. “Yachett Point Reserve is a littoral rainforest its casuarinas provide excellent shelter from the winter westerlies, reduce the incidence of erosion from seaward, and are a haven for a wide variety of fauna, including koalas, possums, sugar gliders, lace monitors, green tree snakes, carpet pythons, blue tongue lizards, skinks, magpies, kookaburras, peewees, willy wagtails, fig birds, several species of honey eaters, noisy miners, spangled drongoes, black and sulphur crested cocktails, wrens, finches, golden whistlers, koels, currawongs, cuckoo shrikes and many different types of insects, including several species of native bees. “Yes, I am an avid

observer of wildlife and have a native fauna friendly native garden,” she said. The outrage that she

and others hold towards the apparent vandalism of the littoral forest has been once again reported to council.

Mayoral Column

SINCE the last Council meeting, I have heard some concerns and misinformation in the community about the changes to building controls in the Nelson Bay town centre. I wanted to take this opportunity to set the record straight. This Council is committed to ensuring sustainable development across our region, to prepare for our future and make sure we are equipped to meet the needs of our community for many years to come. To deliver on our region’s full potential and prepare for growth we are rolling out a number of projects including amendments to building controls in the Nelson Bay town centre. These changes will ensure future growth does not expand into our natural landscape and infringe on koala habitat, while also retaining what we love about Nelson Bay. The amendments will protect the village feel of the Bay while allowing for additional growth and economic development. We'll do this by enforcing lower heights (5 storeys) in the commercial centre, while we'll allow slightly higher development (8 storeys) around the outskirts to frame the town centre. The highest restrictions (12 storeys) will only apply to the site of the Nelson Bay Bowling and Recreation Club where no height controls currently apply. To clarify, this height will not be allowed at any other location across the town centre. Our Council is committed to enhancing the things we love about Nelson Bay — we don't want a high-rise city. We do want to encourage economic development, improve liveability and create better town centres using sustainability goals. One way we are already investing in the future of Nelson Bay is by installing smart parking across the town centre to make finding a car park easier and simpler — with funds collected reinvested back into the town centre. Residents, ratepayers and those eligible for free parking can now register via the Park Free portal on our website portstephens.nsw.gov.au or visit the smart parking pop up shop in 2/2628 Donald Street, Nelson Bay from Monday to Friday. I'm so proud of our place, which is known for its incredible natural beauty, unique wildlife and strong community spirit. These characteristics make Port Stephens a great place to live, work and play — and I will endeavour to keep it this way.

Remembrance Day Commemorated By Marian SAMPSON

REMEMBRANCE Day marks the end of World War I. It was on 11 November 1918, that the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. The German armies were retreating when the Armistice was signed, bringing to an end the First World War. Australians were there, with five divisions of the Australian Corps having been at the forefront of the Allied advance to victory. These diggers had great successes, including the battle of Hamel. They also helped to turn the tide of the war at Amiens, they were there for the capture of Mont St Quentin and Pèronne, and when the allies breached German defences on the Hindenburg Line. They fought to the point of exhaustion and achieved

a fighting reputation out of proportion to their numbers, their victories came at a heavy cost. Our diggers suffered almost 48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 soldiers that paid the ultimate price. In the four years of the First World War more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the postwar decades. Today it is important to Australia that we mark the sacrifices made by our diggers and around Port Stephens Remembrance was marked in many ways. While the official ceremonies were very different due to COVID-19, a minute's silence was held in many places. Tributes were also made in schools and within the community.

Felicity Hamilton of Latitude One told News Of The Area, “We have a knitting group of 8 ladies who decided to knit poppies to acknowledge Armistice Day yesterday, during the discussion the wife of a veteran overheard their idea and proposed that we hold a small service to show our respects for those past and present serving our country. “Resident, Ron Horton an Army veteran was the MC during the service, we had approximately 60 residents and staff with all of us planting hand knitted poppies in one of the park areas of the Latitude One, it was a lovely way for the community to come together and show our respects,” she said. While most of us did not live through the war, believed to end all wars at the time, we still hold true to the tradition and ‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them’.

My Cinema My Film Festival SYDNEY Film Festival’s Travelling Film Festival (TFF) has partnered with Independent Cinemas Australia (ICA) and worldwide content delivery service Qube Wire to present My Cinema My Film Festival, screening in 19 cinemas across metro and regional NSW, QLD, SA, WA and ACT from November to December 2020. The initiative is supported by Screen Australia. My Cinema My Film Festival aims to bring audiences back to their local theatres at a time when cinemas are faced with reduced capacity and fewer international releases. Scotty’s Cinemas is proud to present this exciting festival in Raymond Terrace, NSW. Program highlights include: High Ground, a brandnew Australian drama set in Arnhem Land starring Simon Baker and Jack Thompson

(Mystery Road: SFF 2013); Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard award winning comedy The Climb. As well as Oscar nominated director Agnieszka Holland’s critically acclaimed drama Charlatan; and Sydney Film Festival 2020 Documentary Australia Foundation Award winner Descent, a strikingly beautiful documentary focusing on free diver Kiki Bosch. Sydney Film Festival CEO Leigh Small said, “Sydney Film Festival and the Travelling Film Festival are proud to partner with ICA to bring an expertly curated selection of films to metropolitan and regional cinemas across Australia. “My Cinema My Film Festival, gives independent operators a chance to present a bespoke festival-worthy program of world-class and top Australian cinema to screen to their local audiences. “This is one step we can take together to help bring

audiences back to the cinemas responsibly, with outstanding films they are unlikely to see anywhere on streaming platforms,” she said. Scott Seddon, of Scotty’s

Cinemas and President of Independent Cinemas Australia, an organisation representing independent cinema operators throughout the country said, “My Cinema

My Film Festival, presented in collaboration with Sydney Film Festival and the Travelling Film Festival, is a fantastic opportunity for ICA member cinemas and the communities they serve to see the very best quality of films on the big screens of cinemas

throughout Australia’s cities and vast regional areas. “This will give this particular segment of patrons the reason they have been looking for to get out off the couch and into their COVIDsafe cinemas,” he said.

Australian film High Ground is opening the film festival on Thursday 19 November from 6.30pm.

FRIDAY

MUM

ABC, 10pm

This is not your average British comedy sitcom. While there are some of the usual tropes (dumb blonde, angry curmudgeons, hapless son), Mum offers a beautiful mix of heart and humour as it follows the middle-aged and recently widowed Cathy (Lesley Manville) as she makes the tentative steps towards a deep connection with Michael (Peter Mullan), who has remained long-silent of his love for her for the best part of 40 years. Tonight, Cathy and Michael’s Easter Sunday plans are thwarted.

We’ve sat by and watched these hardworking pairs for months as they smashed, sanded and decorated their way through their renovation dreams. It all comes to a crunch tonight as the completed homes in Melbourne’s bayside suburb of Brighton go under the hammer. While we are taken on a trip back through the contestants’ journeys this season, nerves are high as the winner is revealed by hosts Scott Cam (pictured) and Shelley Craft. Brisbane locals Jimmy and Tam’s 1950s renovation has won most of the competition, but will iit be too bold for buyers?

THE GREAT HOUSE REVIVAL

SBS, 7.30pm

The beautiful gift of renovation shows is in their ability to sweep up us in the drama of pondering which bathroom tiles speak most to us, which shade of eggshell white is more welcoming and, the eternal question: to water feature, or not to water feature? The seemingly trivial becomes essential and in so doing, pulls us away from the constant drama of the world at present. In tonight’s finale, host Hugh Wallace follows a restoration of epic proportions as couple Carolyn and Michael and brother Henry attempt to revive an 1850s Regency-style mansion in Ireland. 2011

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.

Dear Jasminda,

My son came home from school today saying he didn’t get the role of School Captain because of illegal votes. What do I tell him?

BUYING A HERITAGE HOME “We’d love to buy a historic property, but many we’ve looked at have Heritage Overlays or National Trust protection. Should we embrace or fear a property with those mantles?” HISTORICALLY significant homes are important to our local communities. Plus, their design and construction are representative of the quality of craftsmanship of a bygone era. When these factors combine, they invariably arouse community/Council/National Trust resolve to protect them, hence the application of tight parameters about what changes can be made. The level of restrictions will be dependent on the whether the property is noted with local council as an item of historical note or if it is fully listed with National Trust. Then I think your first point is to determine just how much you love the property, not just visually, but will it meet your daily needs? If so, then, if significant repairs/ alterations are required, do you have the deep pockets and resolve to see them through within the tight and often costly guidelines? We’ve all watched ‘Restoration Home’ and sympathise with property owners when things get tough. If you love the home, and you have the passion to work within the guidelines, I say don’t be afraid, be excited about the purchase and engage the best people to work with you. Yes, there might be plenty of tears, but there’ll also be plenty of joy. When you own a significant home, you are the custodian of a slice of our country’s development. That’s definitely something to be immensely proud of!

$2 million for Newcastle Marine Rescue building

THE NSW Government will provide $2 million toward construction of a new Marine Rescue building at Stockton, Catherine Cusack, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter announced today. Ms Cusack said the funding for Marine Rescue NSW was being provided under the NSW Government’s COVID-19 stimulus program. “This $2 million funding is fantastic news for Marine Rescue Newcastle and the future of maritime safety in the Newcastle region,” Ms Cusack said. “$600,000 will be provided this financial year and $1.4 million next financial year. “The funding will allow the local branch of Marine Rescue NSW to build a quality new permanent home on Crown land close to the water near South Stockton boat ramp. “Marine Rescue Newcastle had been in limbo after being forced to relocate from its previous building on Shepherds Hill after it was badly storm damaged in 2015. “Newcastle City Council provided a recent lifeline when it offered the Crown land it manages at South Stockton on a peppercorn lease for Marine Rescue Newcastle. “The $2 million funding announced today will allow Marine Rescue Newcastle’s plans for a permanent new base on the edge of the Hunter River to become a reality.” Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey

Tannos said he was thrilled by the stimulus funding that will help keep Newcastle's boating community safe. “The NSW Government’s support will ensure our volunteers will have a modern, purpose-built base with state-of-the-art facilities for managing their emergency operations on the busy Hunter River, Newcastle Harbour and offshore waters,” Mr Tannos said. “The new base will be fitted out with the latest generation marine radio equipment along with dedicated training facilities, offices, volunteer amenities, a crew ready room and berthing facilities for our new $535,000 rescue vessel right at the door. “This will enable the unit’s crews to respond even more rapidly to save lives on the water both inside and outside Newcastle Harbour.” Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said the $2 million COVID-19 stimulus funding followed a statewide NSW Government announcement last year of $37.6 million to provide new and upgraded marine rescue facilities and boats. “The COVID-19 stimulus program is working to enhance important community infrastructure across the state, including the Newcastle marine rescue centre, while supporting jobs and local economies in regional areas,” Minister Pavey said.

Port Stephens Council receive $140k for public transport

A NSW Government grant worth more than $140,000 for Port Stephens Council will improve public transport accessibility for customers across the region, Catherine Cusack, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter announced last Friday. The Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme (CPTIGS) provides subsidies to support the construction or upgrade of bus stop infrastructure generally owned and maintained by local councils across rural and regional NSW. Ms Cusack said the grant will

help to build 13 new bus shelters across the Port Stephens region which will all meet accessibility standards. “This grant will help build new shelters at Anna Bay, Raymond Terrace and Salt Ash,” said Ms Cusack. “These new shelters will help to make public transport and connections between bus stops more accessible to those communities and include accessible features like connecting paths, signage, tactile indicators and seating.” Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said the funding will

Thursday, 19 November, 2020

provide much needed transport upgrades and improve liveability in the region. “These upgrades will greatly improve the accessibility, connectivity and safety for all across our region who use our public transport network,” Mayor Palmer said. The NSW Government is committed to providing accessible public transport infrastructure across the state. The Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme supports regional councils, schools and community organisations to deliver this in

Ah, the wonderful democratic process of school elections has an awful lot in common with the outfall from more, shall we say, presidential electoral processes. There was your son, who had promised everything under the sun: turning the corner on school assessments, liberty and freedom, the removal of archaic testing systems in favour of self determination. I bet he even did one of those crowd-pleasing dances — sort of like Ellen DeGeneres if she had a fractured spine. And then what happened? The votes were tallied (hidden away in the staff room). Then there were rumours of a random truck delivery of illegal votes. And now your little ray of sunshine has lost out to some annoying kid who is always winning citizenships awards when he’s not volunteering to do extra reading with the kindy kids in his lunch break or intentionally slowing down in his running races to give others a chance. I mean, what happened to winning at all costs? When did we turn into a bunch of pussies? Maybe your son could demand a recount? It’s a proposition that’s going great guns in the US (no pun intended). Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Port woman’s $100k win

A PORT Stephens woman has declared her 2020 has been turned around in the best way possible thanks to a $100,000 Lucky Lotteries win. The New South Wales player won the 1st Prize of $100,000 in Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot draw 10423, drawn Wednesday 4 November 2020. The woman plans to use her prize to pay off her mortgage and treat herself to some lavish purchases. The regular player, who

wishes to remain anonymous, purchased her winning entry of seven random numbers online at thelott.com. “As you can imagine, I am going very well,” the woman said. “It’s an incredible surprise! “I really thought someone was pulling my leg. I never expected this to happen to me. “I am definitely going to celebrate. I am going to go and relax this afternoon and take the dogs for a walk and then I might go out for a nice dinner.

“It’s certainly made 2020 a lot better.” When asked how she planned to enjoy her prize, the overjoyed winner admitted she needed time to think. “I need to let the news sink in,” shesaid. “I will definitely put it on the mortgage, but I will treat myself a little too, I am sure. “I want to really savour this win. It’s fabulous!” q A Port Stephens woman is $100,000 better off after a lottery win.

Fingal Probus Members Trip To Wiseman’s Ferry By Marian SAMPSON

RECENT relaxation of some COVID-19 rules allowed members of the Fingal Bay Probus Club to head to the wonderful Hawkesbury River and Wisemans Ferry area. Club members based themselves at the Del Rio Riverside Resort, where they took full advantage of exploring the beautiful walks, ferry travels, and visits to historic buildings. The group visited the historic Ebenezer Church which they rated as a “mustsee”, as it is the oldest working church in Australia since 1809. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “There are several intriguing museums, a host of local cafes and those all-essential gift shops throughout the area. “And the one really rainy day proved that there was no better place to visit than the seemingly timeless Settlers Arms Inn at St Albans where the usual delicious lunches

could be enjoyed cosily inside or on the sheltered verandah. “Back at the resort there were some self-catered meals thanks to Roy and Geraldine Jeffery and away trip organiser Ross Jennings, helped by several cake and nibble providers,” she said. The members enjoyed a fantastic few days of fun and friendship that is the hallmark of Probus Clubs everywhere. For many that normally travel and caravan regularly, the trip was relished as a chance to get back out on the road, something they hope to continue in coming months. The Probus Club of Fingal

MEDOWIE is growing and the local Probus Club has seen an increase in membership. Recently members were able to get out and about with a visit for the clubs members to Destiny Haven at Brookfield. This was the first outing for a group of members for some time, with COVID-19 having impacted activities. Kevin Tomlinson of the Combined Probus Club of Medowie told News Of The Area, “While the Club has been fortunate to be able to hold meetings and hold the Birthday Lunch, visits to other places have been restricted.

“Now there is some relaxation of the places and numbers, the Club is looking at more outings for members,” he said. The visit to Destiny Haven saw 22 members enjoy a delicious morning tea. They were also enthralled by the ladies at Destiny Haven explaining the aim of this wonderful facility which has helped them to learn the skills they needed enabling them to turn their lives around. After the presentation members then visited the chocolate making and the displays of their wares, which include delicious preserves made from their own

grown produce, sumptuous chocolates, complimented by a range of jewellery and bags. Medowie Probus Club is a mixed Club and welcomes visitors to their meetings, which are held at the Medowie Community Centre on the third Wednesday of each month at 10.00 am, the next will be held on 20 January 2021. The club is hoping to arrange further outings for members, providing COVID-19 rules allow. The aim of Probus is to provide continued gettogethers in fun, fellowship and friendship, the mantra of Probus, for retired and semi-retired members of the Community. Nelson Bay Croquet Club Doubles Champions

THE Nelson Bay Croquet Club Golf Croquet Handicap Doubles Championship, the Blowes Shield, was played on Sunday 15th November 2020. The 2020 championship was a poignant one as it is named in honour of Life Member Cyril Blowes who passed away in September 2020 aged 107. The 2020 field was the largest in the history of the championship with 14 doubles pairs contesting the event. The competition was played as a round-robin in four blocks with the winners of the blocks playing a semi-final and final. The competition rules stipulate a 13 hoop game but with a time limit of 50 minutes, with an additional hoop to be played if scores are tied at the end of the allotted time. The winners of the blocks,

when the allotted time expred – a very close game. The win represents a “three-peat” of sorts – Butler & Wilson were Blowes Shield winners in 2016 and 2017 but

By David BURNETT THE Final of the last Bowls Club event of the year, the “Jim Scanlon Shield” was played on Sunday 15 November in ideal conditions on No.1 synthetic green at Stockton Bowling Club. In what was an entertaining game, the team of Ian Griffiths, Leo Payne and Dean Ward, who is not a recognized skipper, but may be now, defeated the team of Rod Cue, Ian Johnson, who was substituting for Larry Harmer who was taken to hospital unexpectedly with appendicitis, and Col Firkin (Skip) by 19-11 shots. In the Semi-Finals, played the day before, Dean had defeated the team of Wayne McMahon, Ross Wright and Tug Smith by 25-18 shots and Col defeated the team of Greg Penfold, Simon McDonald and Brian Hitchcock by 25-20 shots. The last official function of the year is Presentation Night combining both Ladies and Mens Clubs and will be held on Saturday 21st November 2020. Jack High PO.
