After being diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma, Mackenzie is fighting the battle of her life –only four years since losing her mum to cancer.

One of her biggest supporters is the Raymond Terrace Magpies Rugby League Football Club.

The Magpies are right behind Mackenzie’s recovery and will host their annual Ladies Day this Saturday July 22 from 11am.

Funds raised on the day will assist the Papworth family in acquiring Mackenzie’s ongoing treatment. CONTINUED Page 9

remain most worried about environmental issues related to wind farms, a new report suggests.

Seabirds preying on bait schools attracted to the structures supporting the turbines being killed or injured and whales getting lost because of navigational interference are among concerns detailed in the report.

The Australian Trade Fishing Association - while clearly stating it supports the push towards net zero emissions - details potential detrimental impacts on marine life and fishing, shipping, tourism, defence, and aviation industries.

“Issues such as area-exclusion zones, noise generation and electromagnetic impulses that affect migration patterns of fish, mammals and seabirds are not to be taken lightly,” the ATFA report said.

The report, released on June 30, listed wildlife and navigational issues as among potential pitfalls.

The corporation’s own literature states it is integral to “the NSW government’s vision to coordinate investment in electricity transmission, generation, storage and firming infrastructure and transform

the NSW electricity system into one that is cheap, clean and reliable”.

A spokesperson for Energyco this week told News Of The Area, “NSW will work closely with the commonwealth on the development of the proposed

Council was recently successful in an application for Special Rate Variation (SRV) to help improve Council’s long-term financial sustainability. This application was not made lightly – it was a tough decision made after careful consideration by our Council based on an understanding of our current and future finances.

The new rates will start this month. For most, it will only be a slight increase however, we know that with the cost of living increasing, some residents will still find this change difficult.

As part of our Rates Assistance Program, we’ve partnered with local financial counselling services to provide ratepayers experiencing financial hardship access to additional services. For those who have been impacted by land revaluations, you can also apply for financial assistance.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, we may be able to help with:

Allowing extra time to pay or arranging smaller regular payments, like fortnightly direct debit Deferring rates payments for aged pensioners against property estate

• Financial assistance of up to $500 for individuals and families or $250 to those who already receive a Council pensioner rate concession

undertaken as part of this process.

“Environmental approvals will be required from both the NSW government and commonwealth before offshore wind projects are constructed off the coast,” the spokesperson said.

Last week BlueFloat Energy, the developer of the Eastern Rise Offshore Wind Project, welcomed federal Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen’s declaration of the Hunter region as Australia’s second offshore wind zone.

Smaller than originally proposed, the Hunter zone was declared after two months of public consultation with the local community, industry and sea users.

The company’s Eastern Rise Offshore Wind Project is located within the declared zone, between Newcastle and Nelson Bay off the Hunter-Port Stephens coast in NSW.

With as many as 115 floating wind turbines and three offshore substations, the project is proposed for an area 25-45km off the coast.

BlueFloat Energy intends to apply for a ‘feasibility licence’, which will enable further work, including detailed environmental and technical studies, to be undertaken to validate the suitability of the location and inform project design and the environmental impact assessment process.

Nick Sankey, BlueFloat Energy’s Australian country manager, said, “we’re excited about the announcement of Australia’s second offshore wind zone and applaud the government’s feedbackoriented approach.

“We want to create lasting benefits for the Hunter region.

“Our recent public drop-in

sessions represent the start of our consultation and there will be plenty of opportunities for feedback during the design and approvals phase.

Council sprints through meeting

PORT Stephens Council may have set a record for the shortest ordinary council meeting ever with its most recent session.

With one of the agenda items withdrawn the council session was kept brief by a motion from Cr Peter Kafer that allowed the council to settle most of the remaining matters in a single vote.

Demonstrating that sometimes politicians can function efficiently and

The company’s environment and planning chief Deb Neumann said consultation was a priority.

“At the public dropin sessions in the region, we heard that whilst the transition to renewable energy is supported, the community wants a focus on studying the potential impact of the project on the marine environment, particularly whales and migratory birds.

“These studies and related analyses will be undertaken during the environmental assessment phase,” she said.

cooperatively, the bulk of agenda items required no discussion at the session, meaning that the webcast meeting was concluded in less than 6 minutes.

This is the shortest ordinary council meeting for Port Stephens since commencing webcasts of their sessions in 2018.

Shuffling Council Ward

PORT Stephens Council is changing its ward boundaries and Boat Harbour is headed east.

Designation of council wards is intended to evenly distribute voter numbers so they are represented by an appropriate number of councillors.

The Local Government Act 1993 requires that local population numbers be regularly monitored, and

that the difference in ward population be no greater than ten percent.

This is to ensure representation of some areas is not disproportionate.

Port Stephens last reviewed its ward boundaries in 2019.

At that time the population variance across wards was only 7.52 percent, but it was decided that ward boundaries should change to allow for the lowest possible variance and to reduce the need for constant

changes.

Those amendments were finalised in 2021.

Data from June 2023 has demonstrated a variance of 18 percent and requires that changes be brought into effect by 2024.

Of the proposed changes, Port Stephens Council unanimously opted to move the suburb of Boat Harbour from the central to the east ward, and to transfer 43 electors in Medowie from the central to the west ward.

Lions Club - Volunteers Donate Comfort To Hospital Patients

THE Lions Club of Soldiers Point is made up of a group of dedicated locals all working hard, volunteering their time to make our community a better one.

Recently the Soldiers Point Lions Club donated $3564.20 to Tomaree Community Hospital for the purchase of two muchneeded chair/beds.

Lesley Wright, president of the Soldiers Point Lions Club told News Of The Area, “as soon as they arrived and were unpacked, one went immediately into service”.

These chairs are ideal for patients who are confined to a chair for long periods by containing pressurerelieving memory foam, and an integrated air cell in the seat for maximal pressure relief.

The mobility of the chairs means that these patients can now be wheeled outside to the garden for some sunlight and fresh air.

The chairs have a

contoured backrest with lumbar and lateral support, angled armrests, and adjustable wings and neck pillow to ensure maximum comfort and postural support.

The flexible tilting mechanisms and high legrest elevation reduce fluid accumulation in patients for whom this is a problem, and the simple reclining mechanism and large push handle make the chairs easy for staff to operate.

The Soldiers Point Lions is the only Lions Club in the Nelson Bay area and has been here since 1978 working hard raising money, all of which goes to local charities.

The club also assists with disaster relief, not only locally but across Australia and overseas.

“So far this year we have raised $14,532 for such donations,” said Lesley.

Rate break for those doing it tough

PORT Stephens Council has endorsed measures to support those experiencing financial hardship.

General manager Tim Crosdale said the new rates measures began this month and would support the long-term financial sustainability of council, ensuring the continued delivery of services.

“Even though our rates will remain one of the lowest in the region, we know that with the cost of living increasing, some residents will still find any additional costs tough,” Mr Crosdale said.

“A key part of our application for the SRV (special rate variation) was to make sure we had the right provisions in place to help the most vulnerable in our community.”

An SRV allows councils to submit to state

government applications to increase rates more than a cap set annually by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.

To succeed in an SRV application, councils must make allowances for people affected by the increase.

“Just a few weeks ago, our councillors endorsed a number of new affordability measures to support those experiencing financial hardship,” said Mr Crosdale.

“These measures include options around extra time to pay, arranging smaller regular payments such as a fortnightly direct debit, or deferring the payment of rates for aged pensioners against their property estate.

“In addition, as part of our rates assistance program, we’ve partnered with local financial counselling services to provide ratepayers

experiencing financial hardship access to financial assistance of up to $500 for individuals and families or $250 to those who already receive a council pensioner rate concession,” Mr Crosdale said.

Coinciding with the new rate structure is the revaluation of land rates by the valuer general, which informs rate pricing. This is a process required by state government and undertaken every 3 years by the valuer general.

“The impact of land revaluation is varied – some people will pay more, others less and some will be the same. If your costs increase following the valuation, you may be eligible for financial assistance,” said Mr Crosdale.

“Finally, for those that have accrued interest when they weren’t able to pay in exceptional circumstances, we’ll be able to help.

“We encourage anyone in our community who’s finding it difficult to pay their rates to get in touch with us – our team are here to help and provide you with the support you need,” Mr Crosdale said.

Paul Harris awards presented to Rotarians

THE Rotary Club of Salamander Bay marked its annual changeover dinner at the Nelson Bay Golf Course.

Incoming president Rita Murray said the club made three significant donations of $2500 each, to the Yacaaba centre, Hope cottage and the Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre, with the goal of helping the homeless in the area.

It was a very special night for longtime Rotarians Harry Parker and Leah Anderson.

“Harry Parker, the outgoing president, and Leah Anderson were

awarded the Paul Harris Award for their many years of service and dedication,” she said.

It is presented to a Rotarian or a member of the community who has made an outstanding contribution to the community.

Past President of the Rotary Club Of Salamander Bay Leah Anderson said, “Harry Parker and I were awarded by our club as Paul Harris Fellows, which is the highest form of recognition a Rotary club can bestow.

“I was surprised and completely honoured to receive this award from my Rotary Club of Salamander Bay.

“I am a proud Rotarian and [have been] a board director of our club for almost 14 years now, and I adore my Rotary family and the work we do in our community.

“I was proud to stand beside outgoing President Harry Parker, who also received a Paul Harris Fellow,” she said.

The proud Paul Harris Fellow and Rotarian Harry Parker said, “I have been a Rotarian for 23 years (10 in Victoria and 13 with the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay).

“Throughout this time I have held several positions with the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay including

president (twice), director youth services, director international services and secretary,” he said.

The club inducted two new members, Deb Esquilant and Jan Sheppard, who are now serving on the board.

The new board was declared comprising existing and new members, including one from Springwood, John Fuller.

“I am looking forward to a busy year with the board and members, who are hoping to make a difference in the community with their fundraising and volunteer efforts,” said new president Rita Murray.

Empowering women - pelvic health

q Amy Hansen will speak about pelvic health.

THE Nelson Bay Country Women’s Association will host a special event aimed at empowering women on 22 August at the CWA Hall on Gowrie Avenue Nelson Bay at 7pm.

Women’s health is important and as women age they need to be aware of the increasing importance of maintaining their pelvic health.

The presentation will assist women in being educated, prepared and empowered in maintaining their pelvic health.

Maintaining good pelvic health leads to confidence.

The Australian Department of Health and Aging states it is important to keep your pelvic floor muscles strong because strong pelvic floor muscles mean good bladder control.

Guest presenter and specialist Amy Hansen will be speaking about the unique challenges that women face as

they age.

The presentation will also provide attendees with practical strategies to nurture and maintain wellbeing.

Amy Hansen will provide practical preventative and lifestyle strategies, as well as discuss treatment options.

Dianne McKenzie of the Nelson Bay CWA evening branch told News Of The Area, "women's pelvic health is an important part of keeping healthy and avoiding

long-term health issues, as a women's organisation, the CWA is hoping this information evening will be beneficial to the women of Port Stephens by empowering them to take action to improve and maintain their pelvic health."

Tickets for the event are $10.

Beacon To Save Lives At Fingal Spit

FINGAL Spit is a beautiful natural asset that has proven itself to be deadly, claiming its 17th recorded swimming death in April this year.

In response to the dangers faced by swimmers at remote locations, the state government has rolled out a series of Emergency Response Beacons.

Statistics had Fingal Island and Fingal Spit selected for new ERBs.

When every second can mean the difference between life and death, new ERBs will give visitors at unpatrolled beaches a link to lifesaving services during emergencies.

ERBs mean someone who might witness a coastal emergency can connect directly to the Surf Life Saving NSW state operations centre where the nearest lifesavers, lifeguards or other emergency service can be notified and activated to respond.

A camera fitted to the ERB can be remotely monitored by the operations centre to provide those on the ground information about the incident.

That information can then be shared with the local surf life saving team to respond, including deploying jet skis, inflatable rescue boats, volunteer callout

teams from nearby surf clubs, lifeguards, helicopters and even drone services.

These life-saving beacons are solar powered and connect to the 4G network, which means they are online and powered up when needed.

Emergency Services

Minister Jihad Dib said, “Australia has some of the most enviable beaches in the world and who doesn’t love a beach vacation or a dip in the ocean on a sunny day?

“It is important to understand local conditions as they can change quickly, which is why it is always important to swim safely and within your abilities.

“But when things do go wrong, we want to make sure people on our beaches and our emergency services are best equipped to respond,” he said.

“These new beacons provide an extra set of eyes

on the beach and will help live savers.”

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington said given the beauty of the area the ERBs were a welcome addition to the beaches.

“We know all too well how quickly disaster can strike and it is critical we have the tools in place to respond as quickly as possible,” she said.

“Our lifesavers and lifeguards can’t be everywhere at once, so these emergency beacons are about expanding the reach and making every effort to protect swimmers at unpatrolled locations so we can make sure only great memories are made when visiting our beaches.

“The ERBs give visitors at unpatrolled beaches a link to lifesaving services during emergencies, where every second can mean the difference between life and death,” said Surf Life Saving

NSW chief executive Steve Pearce.

“It’s going to really reduce response times and likely save many lives, whether [that’s a result of] swimming, rock fishing or boating incidents.”

A significant innovation in the latest installations is the use of a far less invasive ground footing which allows the units to be removed easily in the case of instability because of erosion.

National Parks & Wildlife Service and local indigenous communities are pleased the new units will be lighter on the coastal environment.

“It is technology like this that we are proud to see rolling out, to ensure beach users across NSW are as safe as possible. This beacon will give residents and visitors some extra peace of mind that help is available if they get into trouble,” said Mr Pearce.

Help for Tomaree Hospital’s helpers

PORT Stephens FM, in conjunction with Business Port Stephens, have proudly presented the Tomaree Hospital Auxiliary with a cheque for $2,046.

The funds were raised through

a recent charity golf day fundraiser. The cheque was presented to the auxiliary president Jayne Kilbride, by Business Port Stephen's Kerri Rodley and Port Stephens FM presenter Andrew

Bowden.

The Tomaree Hospital Auxiliary is a group of volunteers who raise much-needed funds for the Tomaree Hospital.

All funds raised by TCHA are

used solely to purchase items for the Tomaree Community Hospital. The funds are used for patient comfort, the working conditions of staff and the hospital environment.

Rate increase set at 9.5 percent

PORT Stephens Council is getting its ducks in a row, approving its 2023 to 2033 ‘Integrated Planning and Reporting’ documents and 2023 to 2024 fees and charges.

That cements its annual rate charges to an annual 9.5 percent increase for the next three years, approved by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal last month.

General manager Tim Crosdale said the suite of IP&R documents guided council’s annual works program and its Delivery Program, Operational Plan and Resourcing Strategy constituted “the nuts and bolts of what we do”.

“These documents outline the services we provide, how we provide them and the budget required to achieve it all,” Mr Crosdale said.

“These plans are the link between our Community Strategic Plan and the work our teams do on the ground each day,” he added.

Councils across NSW are required to review their Integrated Planning and Reporting documents on an annual basis. These plans include the revised debt recovery and hardship policy and the

enhanced services focus areas identified by the community, which align directly with our application for a Special Rate Variation to IPART.

“Last month, our SRV application was successful and although this increase brings Port Stephens from the lowest to the second lowest rates

in the Hunter region, we know that it’ll still be tough for some in our community,” Mr Crosdale said.

“That’s why council adopted a revised ‘debt recovery and hardship policy’, which outlines additional ways council can support residents who are doing it tough.

“To help the most vulnerable and give more relief to ratepayers including pensioners who are experiencing hardship, we’ve made sure we have some new affordability measures in place,” he added.

DEAR Jasminda,

AFTER buying a fitness tracking device, I'm now really disappointed that my intense workout is only worth about 350 calories, which is less than one chocolate sundae.

It hardly seems worth it.

Dear Bruce,

The Write Direction

Navel gazing

I AWOKE this morning with my version of writer’s vacuum. Nothing grabbed me as needing to be explained on the economic front this week, and no pressing community issue needed to be theorised. A period of navel gazing followed while I gave some thought to the world’s economic position.

No matter where you look, the result is either a heavenor-hell situation.

In my perfect world the police are British, the top chefs are Italian, the best mechanics are German, the best lovers are French and it’s all being organised by the Swiss, the world’s mostefficient nation.

Then we must think about hell and I’m sure this

would be where the police are German, the chefs are British, the mechanics are French and the lovers are Swiss and it’s all being organised by the Italians.

I’m not trying to be offensive in any way, as for years I did business with residents in all of those wonderful nations, with the exception of Italy. It probably just shows my poor form when trying to be humorous while little else seems to grab my attention today.

The most concerning missing ingredient when trying to do business today is the lack of service.

It frustrates me to blazes when trying to contact businesses by telephone only to hear that they are

Koalas in holding pattern

PORT Stephens Council has postponed a discussion about the rezoning of land located on Homestead Street in Salamander Bay that would facilitate the relocation of rehabilitated koalas from the nearby koala hospital in One Mile.

A report was commissioned by the council

experiencing heavier than normal call volumes, but they really want to hear from me and that I could go online or try to call back later on that day.

Do I believe that?

Of course not, but it is just their way of being courteous while trying to dodge the contact by having you chase up your query via the internet. They don’t want to have the cost and inconvenience of providing that service, they need you to do it online.

Banks don’t want you to visit their diminishing branch premises, the new way is to do everything online, which we are told is much easier for us.

Retailers of course are desperate to get you to come into their stores because so many customers have found it easier to buy online.

Online is perceived to be a less-costly way to buy goods, which are not burdened by the cost of having a retail outlet for which they pay rent

WHAT did we do before devices that are so clever? They track our calories, let us take an ECG with our morning coffee, show us our erratic sleep patterns (which leads to insomnia) and tell us when to move and drink water. We've become slaves to the

and a staff complement to assist with your purchase.

It’s all about reducing the cost of doing business while not providing any real service to assist with your decision making.

An interesting notice I saw in the USA best describes the options we need to evaluate when looking for real service. That notice said “we offer three kinds of service : GOOD : CHEAP : FAST. You can pick any two of the three options and we will willingly supply, but you need to be aware of

machine with people now unable to stop and talk on their morning walk or else they'll slip into non-zone exercise minutes.

My friend sometimes walks around her coffee table just to make up her 250 steps in the hour (hard to achieve during a Zoom meeting).

Another friend's watch was faulty and so she thought her oxygen saturation was dangerously low, except it wasn't. Between fitness trackers and Dr Google, people self-diagnose with the confidence of neurosurgeons when their highest qualification is a Certificate IV in real estate. There are many positives to your intense workout and the calorie count is just one of them. You're strengthening your bones and muscles, lowering your risk of disease, socialising with others, and improving your memory, among other benefits.

Try not to be obsessive about the statistics. Your neck position from studying your watch and other devices is of more concern than a sneaky sundae now and then. Everything in moderation, Bruce.

the following reality. Good service and cheap won’t be fast. Good service and fast won’t be cheap. Fast service and cheap won’t be good.”

Many people in business have made the decision in these tough economic times to delete much of their service in order to save costs.

More and more businesses require you to do the leg work and seek your answers online rather than spending time talking with their customers, which was once the reason why you

Remembering

DEAR News Of The Area, MY husband (of nearly sixty years) keeps saying he is going to sort out his ‘stuff’.

He will have to, as he is a bit of a hoarder and the kids keep telling him it is all going in a skip.

I know he is doing his best when everything goes very quiet.

A box will have his full attention and each piece is examined carefully - then usually replaced.

A very small pile goes into the garbage, but a happy human eventually

always went to that business with money to spend, because of helpful service.

We who live in regional locations need to sometimes shop outside our immediate locations in order to purchase bigger-ticket items that are not available near home, so service is a critical factor when needing information before buying that product.

One piece of advice might be to slow down and enjoy the journey. Take time for the people in your life because they won’t always be there.

It is going to take a while, so it is good that he has plenty of spare time.

Perhaps this is why we have old age - a time for memories?

Wild times at Rocky Point

Stinker's Stories and Fishing

THE 1950s were wild times at Rocky Point with a gathering of squatters, from far and wide, forming a scattered community among the trees.

The squatters eked out an existence any way they could by fishing, lobstering, farming and gathering shell grit for the chicken farmers.

The pioneering spirit in the area was typified by young couple Ron and Adele McLean, who moved into a humble shack at Rocky Point on an

acreage owned by Charles and Nettie Diemar.

As could be imagined, living at Rocky Point was rough, no house, no road, no electricity or running water.

While at Rocky Point, Ron worked on a small boat to trap the surrounding reefs and headlands for lobsters.

Wife Adele worked cutting sticks to make lobster pots and lifting heavy traps with kids at her feet.

Ron was fortunate to be gifted a 1928 Chevy which was abandoned in the bush.

When repaired, the car enabled him to travel to collect vines to make traps and gather rocks for ballast to hold the traps against the sea.

Having saved £300 in an envelope the young family left the isolation of Rocky Point and settled in Nelson Bay.

Hook up and hang on

FOR those keen to fish off the rocks, this is the time of the year to chase one of the meanest, toughest fish that you are likely to encounter.

The rock blackfish, commonly called a black drummer, doesn’t know when to give up.

Bread berley, ladled into the surge, drives the drummer crackers.

Time to introduce a well-weighted bait of cunjevoi or prawn on a 2/0 hook on a 12kg line.

The lead sinker that you choose is vital to success – too light and your bait washes around on the surface and too heavy you will sink to the bottom and hook Australia, which takes some moving.

Once hooked the drummer will take off like the last bus to Bob’s Farm, that is fast!

The fish is remarkably strong and there is no margin for releasing the pressure.

Lean back and keep winding.

Firstly, what is needed is white water, breaking waves crashing into the rocky headlands or outcrops.

If the sea is calm, forget it.

This wave activity fires up the drummer to move in really close, in search of any shellfish or kelp that has been washed into the sea.

There is a simple technique when targeting drummer and that is – when the drummer pulls, you pull harder.

When fishing off the rocks a life vest is essential.

If you are washed in, you will have a far better chance of survival on the surface than under it.

q Ron Çlanka" Mclean was a master fisherman and lobsterman in Port Stephens who later moved into trawling before heading north to catch prawns in Queensland.

q Black drummer, when it pulls, you pull harder.

Call to detail emergency volunteers’ experiences

SUPPORTING volunteers who turn out to help in a crisis is a key focus of a new state government consultation.

Communities across NSW regularly band together to support each other through volunteering with emergency services organisations such as the State Emergency Service, the Rural Fire Service, and spontaneous volunteering when natural disasters hit.

Five million volunteers in NSW contribute about 1.5 billion hours each year, and the face of volunteering is changing, with existing participants growing older or having less time to help, and the growing frequency of disasters also increasing demand for volunteers.

The government wants to know when and how NSW residents sign up to volunteer programs, and why they

choose to spontaneously volunteer in the face of a crisis or recovery.

It also wants to know about volunteer experiences, motivations and any barriers to joining, to help it enhance recruitment, retention and recognition programs.

Emergency services agencies

The Independent and Parliamentary Flood Inquiries identified a need to strengthen emergency services volunteering and will inform a report that will address: emergency management volunteering and trends, including particular focus on regional and remote areas; opportunities to better integrate spontaneous volunteers into the emergency management framework and; how well placed we are to meet projected future demand for volunteers.

Cricket legend Keiran Knight is top of the Newcastle Country umpiring ranks

The former NSW Second X1 representative played a key role in the Tigers first grade premiership-winning team in 1998-99 and bagged 286 topgrade wickets at an average of 21.38 during a golden era of NSW cricket.

During his tenure in Sydney the capable warrior had to contend with spinners of the calibre of Greg Matthews, Gavin Robertson, Stuart MacGill and David Freedman – who were all elevated to test or first-class status.

Despite an embarrassment of spinning riches, Keiran made four appearances for the NSW Second X1 team.

Knight told News Of The Area that “when I step onto the cricket field I love being involved in the contest”.

As a seasoned spinner and official umpire, the evergreen

stalwart has made a significant contribution to the game during the past four decades.

Knight’s progression through the umpiring ranks has been rapid.

He received the Kevin Pye Medal as the Country Umpire of the Year for 2021-22 and the Newcastle District Cricket Umpires Association Umpire of the Year award for 2022-23.

A product of the Wentworthville Waratahs, Keiran played one fifth-grade match for Fairfield at the age of 15 before joining the Tigers in 1987.

He made his Sydney top grade debut back in 1992 against Hawkesbury – snaring two wickets in his first over - and his career harvest included twelve five-wicket hauls.

Kieran’s best figures of 6-52 against St George included a hat trick and he grabbed 7-30 against South Coast while captaining Riverina to an historic Country Championship title.

“The following week we got

to play Sutherland at the SCG,” Knight recalled.

“Leading those boys out onto the home of cricket was not only a great day, but the most emotional moment of my cricketing life.”

Knight’s highest score for the Tigers was 104 against North Sydney and he also smashed 152 not out for Lavington Panthers against Tallangatta CC in the Albury-Wodonga District competition.

He also spent two seasons with Chestfield CC in the Kent League in England.

Keiran won two premierships and limited overs titles with the Panthers during his stint in Albury before retiring as a player because of a chronic back injury.,

He began his umpiring career in Albury and was soon travelling to Sydney to officiate Premier Cricket first grade matches and placed on the state panel.

When he moved to Port Stephens he commenced umpiring in the Newcastle District Cricket Association and has since controlled Womens

Big Bash League, BBL, National Cricket League and national under age championship fixtures.

Having played elite cricket for more than ten seasons has kept Keiran in good stead while umpiring.

“I probably read the play and can tell when the banter is starting to take over from the game,” he said.

“Now having moved back into country cricket my goal is to start helping young country umpires achieve their highest potential,” Keiran said.

Newcastle District Cricket Umpires Association is actively seeking new members to officiate in the district competition next season.

Successful completion of the course will accredit you to umpire in local junior fixtures in addition to senior matches.

Course are on Saturday August 5 and Sunday August 6.

SnowSport medals for rookie Anna Bay skiers Beau and Nate

A FAMILY holiday frolic in the snow at Perisher Valley has developed into an extreme snowboard and skiing challenge for Anna Bay siblings Beau and Nate Goodwin.

Lining up in their first-ever competition, the talented brothers showed raw potential by collecting medals at the Northern NSW and Queensland Interschools Snowsport Championships at Perisher earlier this month.

It was a tremendous achievement by the Anna Bay Public School pupils, with eightyear-old Beau clinching a gold medal in the Year 2 Division 5 Snowboard Cross and bronze in the Giant Slalom.

His elder brother Nate,11, brought home a bronze medal with a skilful performance in Giant Slalom in the Year 5-6 Division 4 category.

For pocket dynamo Beau, an accomplished skateboarder, the future looks bright.

To claim gold in his first competitive snowboard cross event is something special indeed and a by product of his skateboarding deeds back in Port Stephens and countless hours training in the snow.

The boys’ proud mother Amy told News Of The Area that the pair “have taken to snow sports like a duck to water.

“From the moment we first travelled to

Jindabyne for family holidays the boys have shown a natural ability to compete in the snow,” said Amy.

“They took up skiing with their father Liam and adapted quite quickly and being good surfers and skateboard riders can surely benefit their balancing skills,” she said.

The boys are coached by former professional snowboarder Ryan Tiene and are reaping the rewards of his intense training program.

Shoal Bay Public School siblings Billy and Coral Kearney also turned in credible performances at the Inter-Schools Snowsport championships.

Billy, 11, finished 12th in the Giant Slalom and 14th in Snowboard Cross while sister Coral, 10, placed 35th in the Alpine Skiing event from 68 competitors.

With the top 15 in each event qualifying for the state titles, the Port Stephens connection of Nate, Beau and Billy will now compete at the NSW Snowsport Championships on August 22-23 at Perisher.

LONG–distance travel hasn’t deterred the competitive efforts of Port Stephens pickleball warriors Tony Mayers and John McDonald.

The pair recently participated at the Queensland State Championships in Morayfield – the largest pickleball tournament in the southern hemisphere with some 530 players filling 22 indoor courts.

Mayers and McDonald linked up in the plus-60 years mens doubles under 3.49 category along with 18 other teams and forced their way into the quarter finals after earlier winning three of their four round robin fixtures.

An excited Mayers told News Of The Area that reaching the last eight at the Queensland titles was

“a huge effort.”

Port Stephens pickleballers reach Queensland doubles quarter finals

“The men’s doubles event always attracts a strong field and John and I managed to beat some tough teams to progress,” he reflected.

McDonald later teamed up with Kerrie from Bli Bli in Queensland in the plus-50 years under 3.49 division and acquitted themselves well.

Mayers teamed up in the same division with Kiwi player Betty Maitland from Keri Keri in New Zealand and won three of their five games.

Nelson Bay PCYC in Austral Street have organised a free pickleball open day on Wednesday August 2 for prospective players aged 16 and over from 6pm to 8pm. For more information phone 4981 3099.

ABC, 8.30pm

MONDAY JOHN FARNHAM: FINDING THE VOICE

SEVEN, 7.30pm

Iconic Australian singer John Farnham has a voice that millions of fans know and love, but his incredible success belies his humble beginnings. Director Poppy Stockell, who co-wrote this authorised biopic with Spicks and Specks creator Paul Clarke, has crafted an affectionate and fitting tribute to the prodigiously talented performer, who still holds the title to the highest-selling Australian album of all time. Nostalgic, honest and heartwarming, it’s a captivating must-see.

Six years ago, Craig Reucassel shocked the nation and got everyone talking about our waste problem with this series. So, now that he’s back and as driven as ever with this new three-episode instalment, it’s both regrettable and comforting. Since we last saw Reucassel revealing the depths of our waste, there have been positive changes, from supermarkets selling “wonky” fruit and veg to plastic bags slowly being phased out. But there’s still a mountain of problems for Reucassel to highlight and motivate more progress. Find out what we can all do, as he meets inspiring “waste warriors” and uses some cheeky undercover GPS to unearth where our waste really ends up.

WEDNESDAY MINISERIES: ANNE BOLEYN

SBS, 9.30pm

Actress and model

Jodie Turner Smith radiates power and passion in this feminist retelling of the final five months of monarch Anne Boleyn’s life. Henry

VIII’s second and most well-known wife was infamously beheaded for treason after being unable to bear a male heir. Anne is the story’s strong-willed protagonist and it’s told from her perspective. Drama and history blur as we learn of her determination to get her daughter on the throne as she grapples with the patriarchal world enveloping her. This beautifully shot exploration of her character is filled with grim trepidation: we all know the terrible ending that awaits. Billed as a psychological thriller, it’s an affecting ride.

HE’S matched wits with Australian batting greats Steve and Mark Waugh, Mark Taylor and Adam Gilchrist on the cricket field and claimed the scalps of international stars Michael Slater, Greg Matthews and Michael Bevan.

Cricket is in the blood of Raymond Terrace sporting identity Keiran Knight, who still enjoys being out in the middle at the age of 51.

Knight carved out a successful career as a skilful left arm orthodox spinner with Balmain Cricket Club in the NSW Premier Cricket first grade competition that spanned 15 seasons before turning his hand to umpiring.
