for the Hunter, performed the sod turning and spoke about how the facility had come about through the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce, firstly under then President Ryan Palmer and subsequently through the leadership of current President Leah Anderson. The original plan was for the TAFE facility to be housed in the township of Nelson Bay, however subsequent investigations and planning have seen the facility being located at Salamander Bay adjacent to the existing education precinct. Catherine Cusack MLC told News Of The Area, “This is such a win for the community. “Jaimie Abbott worked quite directly with the Premier to get priority for this particular election commitment, knowing it was the number one priority on everyone’s list. “I can’t thank you all enough for the work, commitment and the positive spirit; when the new facility was announced it wasn’t what anybody was expecting, it was a new concept.

Photo by Marian Sampson. “This new facility will be able to work with the community and cater to the training needs,” she said. It is anticipated that the facility will address training in areas such as aged care, tourism and trades including hairdressing. The builders have noted that the site ground conditions are good and that the build will be completed around March 2021. Community

consultations will be undertaken in relation to meeting local training needs. “We are living in a once in a lifetime pandemic but we are also living in a once in a lifetime infrastructure spend as well,” said Ms Cusack. The infrastructure and IT systems being deployed at the site will provide a state of the art training facility. Interactive software and technology will be

accessible similar to that at other TAFE Connected Learning Centres. It is anticipated that the community will be able to experience the centre prior to courses being held. The centre will cater to our youth but it will also offer older people the opportunity to retrain or upskill through a TAFE course. Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “I think this is a world class facility and that this is the future of

learning.” The facility and the TAFE offering on the peninsula will be based around student centred learning. Leah Anderson, President of the Tomaree Business Chamber said, “We are absolutely thrilled to have the TAFE here on the peninsula, which will meet the needs of students and businesses.”

gymnastics and I am still involved in the committee. “We try and get the local kids on the right track and provide a safe place to go,” he said. Over the years the PCYC has delivered fun activities like Blue Light Discos. At PCYC Nelson Bay there are plenty of sports activities on the program

and membership is affordable. PCYC is still delivering programs which help get youth off the streets and engaged in positive activities. They also deliver driver training programs which knock 20 hours off log book hours for L plate drivers.

Offering over 15 youth development programs and over 100 sport, educational, vocational, creative and recreational activities, PCYC clubs are welcoming and accessible reflecting the community they serve by offering classes and programs to suit all ages and lifestyles. The PCYC at Nelson Bay is not just all about youth. On arrival at the centre in Nelson Bay, NOTA found a group of older residents enjoying a game of Pickleball. Meryl Swanson, Member for Paterson, attended the centre to mark the milestone and also indulged in a quick try at Pickleball, which is a fast growing sport that takes elements from a range of sports to create a fun, socially engaging game which delivers some great physical exercise. Dominic Teakle, Chief

It’s Business Port By Marian SAMPSON IN what was one of the first face to face COVID-19 safe business events for Port Stephens 'post' pandemic, 80 guests attended the launch of Business Port Stephens. Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson was in attendance along with Mayor Ryan Palmer and members of the rebranded Tomaree Business Chamber. Meryl Swanson said, “What excites me about this chamber is the way that the collaborations are coming together.” Chamber President Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “The Chamber has been advocating for business across the local government area and it was time for us to acknowledge this within our brand. “The new business directory allows businesses to leverage

from our search engine optimisation and assists member businesses to support each other,” she said. Mayor Ryan Palmer addressed the room acknowledging the contribution of the business chamber to the community. In particular he highlighted the Anna Bay 7 Day make-over, which has been such a success that the Council plans to roll out further make-over projects in other town centres, with Medowie slated as the next township to benefit from the creation of better town amenity. The chambers precinct by precinct approach is seeing gardens growing in the CBD of Nelson Bay which was the site of the Chambers first volunteer driven community working bee. The fruits of these labours are now much more visible with mature gardens brightening the township. The Chamber is keen to offer support to businesses across the local government area particularly in areas such as advocacy.

Standing ovation for Clough By Marian SAMPSON

RETIREMENT doesn’t come easy to some and for local stalwart Peter Clough this couldn’t be truer. Peter has been working in

community development in Port Stephens for many years and was instrumental in achieving many things during his various tenures. As Town Coordinator for Nelson Bay Town

Management (now closed), Peter worked with businesses to achieve a town levy which funded key infrastructure in Nelson Bay, such as the pavers which make the business precinct more amenable. In more recent times Peter served as Business Development Manager at the Tomaree Business Chamber. His core role was to build membership, and he has achieved just that, working with the Board to grow the membership to around 250 across the Port Stephens region. The 75 year old has been driving change on many levels. He is passionate, and dedicated, however Peter has decided that now is the time to step back and enjoy life. The neglected garden is about to see a bit more time and effort invested. Peter spoke at the launch of Business Port Stephens where he regaled the floor with stories of his long career, from being a bank teller in Wagga Wagga where he worked in pounds, shillings

and pence to delivering events and community development. It’s no surprise to those who know him, that retiring from Chamber will not see Peter retire from community advocacy. He plans to continue as a volunteer working in various capacities on projects which are diverse and will have a high impact including one which will decide the fate of Tomaree Headland. Peter Clough told News Of The Area, “For me the highlights at Chamber have been delivering the business breakfasts and seeing hundreds of businesses in attendance benefiting from the knowledge and quality

of the guest speakers.” Of course he also thoroughly enjoyed bringing Country To The Coast through the Blue Water Country Music Festival and is somewhat saddened that this event will not be going ahead under its previous format. Peter has been working with the board of Chamber to secure enhanced TAFE facilities in the region. “(Through) my involvement with the efforts to make Tertiary Education more accessible to people on the Tomaree Peninsula, particularly younger people, so that we can retain them on the peninsula, Chamber were able to successfully lobby the State government

to establish the new. state of the art, Connected Learning Centre,” he said. Business Port Stephens President Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “We thank Peter for his contribution to the organisation and our community over his many years of service, and we hope he enjoys his retirement.” Peter received a standing ovation from the members of the Chamber for his contribution to the community. Peter’s wife Christine, who is also a volunteer at the business chamber, has some projects for Peter around the home and the couple are looking forward to taking some time out and travelling once border restrictions allow.

Apprenticeships For Youth By Marian SAMPSON

APPRENTICESHIPS are definitely a way forward for the youth of Port Stephens. COVID-19 has decimated the opportunities available for young people and the Federal Budget has recognised the important role apprenticeships will play in securing the future for young people. Past recessions have shown that only when young people are engaged in employment can long term reliance on welfare be avoided. Local Mackenzie Goring is about to embark on her HSC exams and is proud to say that she has secured an apprenticeship in hairdressing. Mackenzie Goring told News Of The Area, “I will be starting at Meraki Hair Society, at Anna Bay.” Mackenzie engaged in a trial at the salon and “really

loved it.” “I have always wanted to work in hair and beauty,” she said. She is looking forward to joining the team and starting her career. Catherine Cusack, Member of the Legislative Council, told News Of The Area, “There has been a real focus on apprenticeships for young people, I think it is safe to say it is almost the number one priority of every level of government, to get our economy back up working again. “We are working to try to make up for lost opportunities of the last 6-12 months, because we know that if a generation of young people miss out on a year or two years unemployed it becomes almost impossible for them and they become overwhelmed and they are looking at a lifetime of joblessness and hopelessness,” she said.

Catherine also recognised the difficult time faced by women in the job market due to the pandemic. She believes we have good evidence from the Global Financial Crisis on what needs to be done to support young people to achieve good outcomes and apprenticeships are one positive way in which the government is supporting our youth. The Federal Budget is supporting businesses to employ apprentices with employers targeted with incentives to employ young people to grow their skilled workforce. She believes that assisting business to get back on its feet will help individuals and our youth find employment. Catherine is also keen to see training in place for industries that need quality staff such as aged care.

More burn-offs planned

Tilligerry Rural Fire Brigade planning more strategic burn-offs

q

By Geoff WALKER FOLLOWING two strategic burn-offs in Lemon Tree Passage, Tilligerry RFS plans to do more when conditions are favourable. A bushfire buffer zone has been created by a burnoff from the ridgeline fire trail to the water tower and down to the Industrial estate.

The recent burnoff at the Old School Site in LTP.

Another smaller burnoff saw the local firies take out a small section of scrub between the access track to the old school site and the back fence lines of homes on the eastern side. Captain George Brandenburg said that more will be done as conditions permit and landowners request them. “There is a set protocol for doing burn-offs and we must comply with the rules,” he said. “Once all the boxes have been ticked we will become active,” he added. “The Covid 19 requirements have somewhat slowed us down this year. This has impacted on our training and response capabilities,” he concluded. Residents and landowners who want dangerous overgrown scrub on or near their properties burnt off should contact the Lower Hunter RFS to initiate the process.

Making plans? Remember, COVID doesn’t take a day off. Enjoy all that NSW has to offer, but please do it in a COVID safe way by remembering to: > Stay 1.5m apart, even with friends and extended family. > Wash your hands regularly. > If unwell, stay at home and get tested immediately. > Wear a mask when you can’t distance and on public transport. > Book in advance and keep to group limits. > Check-in at cafes and venues, so you can be contacted quickly, if necessary.

Fundraising Tournament To Keep Rescue Helicopter In Air By Marian SAMPSON

IT’S been a rocky year for fundraising, and for charities like the Westpac Rescue Helicopter which still need to deliver services, raising funds is vital. Preparations are well underway for a Charity Golf Day to replace the annual Angel Billy Golf Classic which had to be cancelled due to the Covid 19 restrictions. Carla Beer of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Support Group in Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “This will be Port Stephens Support Group’s Major fundraiser for the year.” The event will be held on 8 November at Nelson Bay Golf Club. “In the past 22 years our local group has raised in

excess of $700,000 on our Golf events alone and we thank the generosity of our major sponsors including Port Stephens Toyota, Harvey Norman Salamander Bay, Carlton United Brewery, Steak n Chops Butchers Tanilba Bay, Woolworths, Port Stephens Party Supplies and many other local companies, clubs and the community.” The rejigged event will be quite different thanks to COVID-19. There will be no function after the game, and no dinner however there are plans to make the event memorable. COVID-19 has also changed the format with no shotgun start. Instead there will be timed starts held at seven minute intervals from two tees.

Courageous In Defeat By Mitch LEES THE Nelson Bay Junior Marlins have gone down fighting in both the U13 Boys and U15 Youth Girls on Sunday at Ferodale Oval, Medowie. Both teams faced off against some tough opponents in the Newcastle City Blues with the U13 Boys going down 43 to 36 and the U15 Youth Girls missing out on the trophy by a single point. It was a cool and overcast day and it was reflected in both teams as they kept their heads to fight back to level scores and give themselves a chance at collecting the trophies. The U13 Boys were up against it in their match, but were able to persevere from 13 points down at the half to level

A chat with Mayor Ryan Palmer THIS year has been a year like no other — through bushfires, floods and a global pandemic, our community has stepped up to help others in our region and across the country. Now it’s time to recognise our local heroes who have supported others in our community throughout COVID-19, by nominating them in the Port Stephens Annual Awards. Held on Australia Day each year, the awards are the perfect opportunity to recognise the people who give so much to Port Stephens. These people go above and beyond to support our community and never ask for thanks or recognition. I know how tough 2020 has been for many and although this year’s awards will be a little different to previous years, I think it’s more important than ever to recognise and celebrate our local heroes. Whether it’s volunteering, supporting others, being a role model or excelling in their own field — we want your nominations for the people who make Port Stephens the great place it is. This year, nominations are open for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Freeman of Port Stephens, the Port Stephens Medal, Sportsperson of the Year, Cultural Endeavour and Environmental Citizen of the Year. If you know someone who has given back to their community or done something extraordinary during this particularly difficult time, show them you care by nominating them today. The Annual Awards are a great way to show someone you appreciate the contribution they make to our community. Nominations close 30 November 2020. o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.

Dear Jasminda,

My daughter has taken up vaping to cope with the pressures of the HSC. I'm a bit worried about the health risks.

SCOPING OUT YOUR MOVE “We live in Sydney but on a recent trip to Port Stephens, I caught your column. A question: we think we’d like to make the move up here, but not sure whether to buy outright, or rent first. Each has pros and cons. Your thoughts?”

THANKS for reading my column! My advice is based on professional experience and personal attachment to our gorgeous region. You say “you think” you’d like to move here, so that suggests you’re not yet 100% committed. Buying first off saves you the rental outgoings, but if it doesn’t work for you, then you’ve probably cost yourselves far more. I’d suggest a period renting in an area you feel is a place you could call home. It may be lifestyle, work, school-related, or it could be the landscape – coast or country that attracts you. You don’t say whether our new ‘working remotely’ world is a driving factor, but if you can work remotely, your options are greater. If there are low rental vacancy rates in your chosen spot, look to a neighbouring area and scope your preferred spot in your free time. Check out the landscape, facilities, services and property listings. Either way, don’t rush. Take your time. Think about what’s really important to you and how much you have to spend should you wish to buy. Come and see us. Our Team of property experts will be delighted to assist. Denise

THIS week is National Water Week organised by the Australian Water Association to inspire people, communities and organisations to build awareness around the value of water and waterways. In support, the MidCoast Council is releasing their annual Waterways and Catchment Report Card. It will assess the current ecological health and the progress of management actions across the area’s waterways, including the Wallis and Myall Lakes, and the Manning and Karuah River Estuaries. Committed volunteers, such as the Myall Lakes Aquatic Club, also contribute to maintaining the waterways. Members recently installed new and safe decking at Engels Wharf, taking a full weekend to complete the job, with materials provided by National Parks and Wildlife. Alongside the beaches, the fantastic volunteers who make up the local Bitou Busters have been clearing weeds from the sand dunes each month are having a welldeserved end of season BBQ on Saturday 24 October. Other dates to note: ● 1st Bulahdelah Scouts Group is planning a mega garage sale on Saturday 28 November with donations in advance welcome at 56 Stroud Street, Bulahdelah. ● St John’s Op Shop at Stroud is open

every Friday from 9am with lots of bargains available. ● NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service advise that Broughton Island campground remains closed until 2 November, as does the Bungarie Bay and Neranie campgrounds until further notice due to upgrades. Confirming that the MidCoast Council have cancelled the 2020 Bulky Waste collection due to COVID-19 constraints. For this year, the kerbside collection will be replaced by two waste disposal vouchers to be mailed by 30 October. The vouchers can be used at any MidCoast Waste Management Centre until 30 June 2021. On waste, sadly dumping continues to be an issue for the Lions Club Lookout and a number of local parks, all of which have had increased visitors this spring. The Council will continue to support a CCTV program to identify and prosecute illegal dumpers. Locals can also assist by photographing and reporting dumpers to www.ridonline.epa. nsw.gov.au or by phoning 131 555. On a positive note, nominate your favourite local business for a Happiness Hamper as part of the celebrations for NSW Government’s Small Business month this October. The hampers will be chock-full of goodies, from motivational business books to locally sourced pamper products. Enter online on the MidCoast Council website shopmidcoast.com.au, with entries

Ah, vaping. What happened to the good old days when you'd roll gum leaves, mixed herbs and a hint of cinnamon into a strip of newspaper and smoke it under the house, somehow managing to survive and not burn the place down? Vaping seems so .... I don't know .... so vacuous, so plastic, so 2020. It is like a symbol for all that's wrong with the world. Sucking on something that looks like a USB stick to inhale nicotine, diacetyl, volatile compounds and heavy metals, but thinking it's okay because you can blow cute little mango-scented smoke rings is misguided. And that's the problem. It's the perfect metaphor really. But let's turn to the HSC. There's no denying it is a pressure cooker of Orwellian quotes, unrequited love, Shakespearean angst, sophisticated uses of language and dramatic monologues to name a few. And that's just the bus ride to the English exam. I think everyone over a certain age can unequivocally state that once the HSC exams are over, they fade into insignificance. Life isn't about rote learning literary techniques so you can prove your worth in a 45-minute time slot. No, instead it is a series of life lessons: how to turn two-minute noodles into Pad Thai, how to remove the dribbling man dressed in a kaftan off the red velvet lounge in your shared accommodation. How to mow the lawn with nothing but a pair of pinking shears. How to camouflage cigarette burns in the carpet on rental inspection day with nothing more than some Clairol hair dye, a glue stick and a Wettex. This is when real-life skills come into play - resilience, creativity, tenacity and well there you have it, at least with the cigarette burn example, a flimsy but nonetheless feasible argument for vapes. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

closing 4.30pm on 23 October. Finally, good luck to all the local year 12 students who started their Higher School Certificate with the English exam first this week on the 20 October, with results out on the 18 December. In addition to the many support services available for students and families during this often stressful time, locals can obtain a free School Leavers Information Kit, contact 1800 227 337 for more information.

GETAWAY

NBN, 5.30pm

Although the jetsetting Getaway team are grounded for the time being, their travel know-how definitely comes in handy when daydreaming about that first postpandemic holiday. For an option close to home, host Catriona Rowntree (pictured above) and the team are checking out a family-friendly adventure in Victoria’s Grampians National Park. For those dreaming of the Trans-Tasman bubble, there’s a South Pacific escape to Vanuatu on the cards. Further afield, Los Angeles’ best burgers are examined by presenter Shaun Birley.

The first-class agents of this classic crime procedural just get the job done. There’s no supernatural elements, no mentalism and no nonsense in this straightforward drama from super-producer Dick Wolf (Law & Order). In tonight’s double episode, Special Agent Bell (Missy Peregrym, pictured right) and the New York team face their own prejudice when a desperate father kidnaps a billionaire’s 16-year-old daughter, demanding that his own missing child, dismissed as teenage runaway, be located with the same urgency and dedication. Concerned they might not be able to meet the kidnapper’s demands, Jubal (Jeremy Sisto) puts his hostage negotiation skills to the test.

MOCK THE WEEK

ABC COMEDY, 9pm

After 18 seasons of current affairs comedy, Mock the Week’s panel show format was at risk of becoming a bit stale. Presenter Dara Ó Briain (pictured) and resident comedian Hugh Dennis have been with the show since its inception in 2005 and have heard enough Trump and Brexit jokes to last them a lifetime. Luckily, 2020 came along, with its unprecedented onslaught of fresh news and topical issues giving the show’s guests new material. Fast-tracked from the UK, season 19 starts tonight with guests Tom Allen, Angela Barnes, Rhys Games, Nigel Ng and Athena Kugblenu. They’ll have a lot to catch up on – the show last filmed in December 2019. 2310

PSDB Back To Box! By Mitch LEES

THE Port Stephens District Bodyboarders (PSDB) were greeted with some highly contestable conditions on Sunday for their fourth competition of 2020 with Box Beach turning on some fun 2 foot wedges. The rain held off for the

duration of the contest with the swell holding in as the tide filled up the banks on offer. Club president Chad Pisani said that the day was action packed with Nathan Price taking out the main Opens division against some strong competition. “The whole crew were ripping as always and in the

PORT STEPHENSNews Of The Area

finals it was Nathan who took the top prize,” said Chad. “The swell held in there and the wind stayed light all day. “A big shout out to Angel Apps who helped out and judged most of the day!” In the Groms division it was charger Toby McGuiggan who placed first with Kai

Atkinsan second, Kingsley Longo third, Christian Sheehy fourth, Gilligan Guascoine fifth, and Murphy Guascoine sixth. In the Cadets, young up-and-comer Tye George grabbed gold, Jack Adkins spun into second, Tyler Sarmias boosted into third, and Jacob Plumber rounded out fourth. In Juniors Hayden Pisani rolled the competition for first place, Yianni Paradisis finished second, Hamish Jenkins third, and Jack Adkins fourth.

Boardriders Round 3

Groms Shine In Bay Area Boardriders Third Comp Of The Year By Mitch LEES

THE Bay Area Boardriders’ groms lit up some clean 2 to 3 foot conditions at One Mile Beach on Sunday to push the veterans to their limits for the club’s third competition of 2020. For some of the club’s first-timers the waves on offer proved to be doubleoverhead as they trimmed through their first heats and into the finals. In particular it was 12-year-old pocket rocket Jimmi Hill who took down some big names, winning the main Open’s division in what was his fourth finals showing of the day after placing in the U14’s, U16’s and U18’s. For club spokesmen Mark Buchanan it was great to see some newcomers pushing themselves and their shred sleds through some perfect little conditions. “All the groms were ripping and a couple of newcomers in Sonny Rae and Nash Campbell were surfing really well in the U14’s,” said Buchanan. “Unfortunately the wind and tide came up and it got a bit slow for the older guys, but there was still some great surfing going on!”

In the U12’s, super-grom Harlem Stone took home first place against Noah Bartlett in what looked like monster conditions for the micro-shredders. In the U14’s, it was a familiar name in Jimmi Hill who collected the cash with Sonny Rae second, and Nash Campbell third. For the U16’s, Taj Turner proved to spoil the triple crown for Jimmi Hill as he took top place with Jimmi in second, young prodigy Kai Buchanan third, and Isaac Sullivan fourth. The U18’s saw Isaac Sullivan finish in first place with Jimmi Hill again placing second as Taj Turner and Kai Buchanan rounded out third and fourth places respectively. For the Open division it was Jimmi Hill taking the crown with Mark Buchanan second, Taj Turner third, Nelson Corner fourth, and jiving Jye Astley fifth. In the Over 28's, Mark Buchanan cracked open the champers for a much deserved win with Jamie Doran second, Brett Weston in third and Rod Astley fourth. For the Over 40's, Rod Astley came away with the meat tray as Jamie Doran slashed into second.

rounded out fourth and fifth. Finally in the 50’s,

In the main Opens final it was all-round shred head Nathan Price beating out a strong field with Kane Brewer coming second, Hayden Pisani third, and the guru Brad Jackson fourth. The Masters were next to do battle with Brad Jackson bouncing back for first, ‘The Prez’ Chad Pisani slotting into second, Jeremy Harris third, Aaron Burke fourth and Darrel Apps fifth. Finally in the Grand

Dean Shaw took first, Mark Hill slid into second, John Sullivan grabbed third, and Harry Royal the wave wizard cast himself into fourth. The Boardriders next comp is 1 November with

Masters Jeremy Harris conjured up a victory courtesy of some wedge riding wizardry with Darrell Apps second and Russell Sheehy third. Bathurst Racer Remembered By Geoff WALKER

THIS year's Bathurst 1000 will be remembered for two reasons, it was almost devoid of spectators – due to the Covid 19 pandemic, and it will also mark the end of the Holden team's entries which have dominated the event for many years. Tilligerry has long had an association with the Mt Panorama circuit through legendary car racer John Snow. Mr Snow lived on the waterfront at Tanilba Bay and, along with his wife Judy, ran two real estate offices bearing the family name. John Snow was born into wealth as the son of Sir Sydney Snow and

travelled the world buying for the family emporium. Along the way he bought the latest English and European racing cars which he resold and raced himself around the primitive circuits in Australia. He was both prominent as a competitor at Bathurst and active as a driver's delegate in trying to improve the quality and safety aspects of the mountain raceway in the 1930s and 40s. He also owned a manufacturing business in the town. After giving away the racing game, Mr Snow involved himself in several business ventures before getting into real estate in Port Stephens. You can spot the family home on

Peace Parade in Tanilba Bay. It's different from the other two storey properties as the lover level has three metre ceilings. It was built that way to accommodate the unusually tall grandfather clock which was passed down to him. John Medley, a racing enthusiast, has kept alive the remarkable story of this racing legend in a book: 'John Snow Classic Motor Racer' (2010) for those interested in the history of Australian car racing. q Racing legend John Snow’s memory has been kept alive in Medley's book.

has seen them proceed to the last waltz this weekend. From the first whistle it wasn’t to be the Brown Snakes’ day with the ball failing to go the required 10 metres from the kick-off. The error immediately gave the Marauders an opportunity to kick start their offensive with Adam Beehag, Zion Takarua, Dan Collins and Jordan Byfield leading the charge into the Snakes’ redzone. Under pressure, the Brown Snakes were pinned for hands in the ruck and when Medowie opted for the scrum their pack went to work linking phase play that saw big lock Adam Beehag cross the chalk. The kick was wayward and Medowie went up 5 to 0. At the restart Cooks Hill composed themselves and came out hard and fast, but the Marauders raised to the challenge and were able to shut down the Snakes with some shattering hits. With the ball now back in hand the Medowie men found themselves up another try when Orisi Vosuqa flew through untouched from 40 out off a Jessey Bridge short ball. It was 15 to 0 soon after when player-coach Tim Lancaster darted off the back of the scrum and linked with flanker Jordan Byfield for the try just before the end of the half. At the restart Lancaster ordered his troops to maintain the defensive pressure and it paid off with Medowie awarded a penalty that Captain Eric Tolhurst slotted to take scores to 18 to 0. Medowie then cleared the benches injecting some fresh legs into the match and it paid dividends when replacement

Murphy spotted a mismatch and sent centre Taniela Rabolalele through several defenders for a try. The scores were 23 to 0 and that’s how it would stay as the Marauders steadied the ship and repelled wave after wave of Cooks Hill attack. Player-coach Tim Lancaster

pulled off the hit of the year and put his body on the line all game. The Marauders now lineup this Saturday in the Grand Final against the Waratahs

highly charged clash of the ages. For ticket information and streaming of the match head to https://www.facebook. com/MarauderRugby.

Glory Bound! q Captain Eric Tolhurst led from the front and was pivotal in getting the win. Photo: Michael Folbigg.

By Mitchell LEES

THE mighty Medowie Marauders are glory bound after taking the shovel to the

Cooks Hill Brown Snakes at No. 2 Sportsground on Saturday in a dominant 23 to

final and the Medowie men rose to the occasion with some bone rattling defence and

blistering attacking raids that
