Moo-ving Rescue in the wake of storms

Turtle Power

By Marian SAMPSON THE SES volunteers have been busy in the wake of the storms that hit the region last week. As expected they cleared fallen trees and shored up homes with roof damage. Rather less expected was a moo-ving rescue of a calf near Hinton. A representative of the Port Stephens SES told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens SES loves supporting our community and have responded to multiple storm jobs, general land rescue activations and ambulance support jobs this week.

Berejiklian said in a statement, "Following her decision today to move a non-government amendment to a government bill, I have made the decision to immediately remove Ms Catherine Cusack as a Parliamentary Secretary," This is the second time that Ms Cusack has lost her role as Parliamentary Secretary, having stood down from her post as in 2017 criticising members of the cabinet to Premier Berejklian. She was reinstated in December 2019. The NSW Government has since dumped the legislation, which in September had threatened to split the Coalition. At the recent opening of the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary, Catherine Cusack spoke candidly about the need to protect

koala habitat, she at the time was hopeful that the Federal Environment Minister, Sussan Ley, would decide in favour of preserving the Brandy Hill koala habitat. Unfortunately the decision handed down by Sussan Ley was one which allows for a quarry to be developed in a core koala habitat and a breeding ground for the species. It is now a case of ‘watch this space’ for environmentalists trying to protect koala habitat and preserve the species which suffers from fractured corridors of habitat, and are prone to vehicle strikes and dog attacks.

Ms Cusack crossed the floor and voted with Labor, the Greens, the Animal Justice Party and Independent Justin Field in favour of the inquiry. In crossing the floor, the bill was defeated 18 to 19. Cusack said in her speech to parliament, "It's to try to patch up a political disagreement, and I would dearly love to see that solved, but it is just too costly if it comes at the expense of koalas." Northern NSW Football CEO, David Eland told News Of The Area the announcement was a great opportunity for local sporting groups. “It is a great opportunity for football locally as the sport is really well positioned to take advantage of the fund. “The timing is absolutely perfect because Northern NSW Football just released our State Infrastructure Strategy, and have also provided each of our member zones with their own strategy which identifies and prioritises projects. “The outcomes of our strategy identified

Funding for Nelson Head Lighthouse AUSTRALIA has an extensive network of regional maritime museums and organisations that help preserve and maintain Australia’s maritime legacy. The Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme (MMAPSS) assists these groups in their collection, conservation and display of objects of historical national maritime significance. Kevin Sumption, Director and CEO of the Australian National Maritime Museum said, “We have arguably the best network of regional maritime museums in the world, protecting the rich depth of this nation’s maritime history for future generations.” The Australian National Maritime Museum is pleased to announce the awarding of over

$125,000 to organisations and community groups to support projects promoting Australia’s maritime heritage. Funding has been included for the restoration and refurbishment of the Inner Light Room at the Nelson Head Lighthouse. MMAPSS is funded by the Australian Government through the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications. The grants are provided from MMAPSS while the in-kind and internship costs are covered separately by the museum. The scheme provides grants of up to $15,000, internships and in-kind support from Australian National Maritime Museum

experts (which includes support for staff and volunteers from regional and remote organisations) to learn how to develop educational and public programs that help promote Australia’s maritime collections. Mr. Sumption continued, “Maritime museums and historical societies play an important role in preserving and sharing Australia’s maritime heritage and these grants will ensure important maritime objects are available now and for future generations.” With 44 project applications requesting over $480,000 in funding and two internship applications, the MMAPSS selection committee had the unenviable task of deciding between many worthwhile proposals. Ultimately, grants and in-kind support

have been awarded to support 25 projects and two internships. Areas affected by the 2019-20 bushfires were prioritised in the grants process in this round. Four successful applicants were bushfire affected, including one project that would benefit eight organisations on the NSW South Coast. “The Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme is one of the ways the museum can assist and protect the nation’s maritime heritage and use our expertise to help develop smaller institutions around the country. “We are pleased to be able to send some much needed support, particularly to areas that were affected by bushfire, to organisations run by volunteers, which in many cases, have been hit extra hard,” Mr. Sumption continued. Projects include the physical restoration of vessels or strategic planning to enable their preservation, support to develop information or educational resources for the community to understand the value of particular projects. The projects highlight the depth of heritage Australia has in its maritime past and the passion of individuals around the nation to pass this knowledge on. Further funds and in-kind support will also support museums and historical societies across Australia to carry out conservation work and assessments, catalogue heritage objects and develop educational material.

IT was nearly normal for the members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens when they held their first COVID-19 safe monthly meeting at Fingal Bay Sports Club. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “The Probus Club of Fingal Bay was delighted when the recent relaxing of COVID-19 rules meant the revival of regular meetings.” Members were back at the Fingal Bay Sports Club in Rocky Point Road for updating each other on business, reports, and trying their luck with the regular raffle. For many members it was their first Probus meeting in many months, having been on a phone contact list to help keep them connected when unable to participate in the few activities which were

allowable with reduced numbers. After the meeting many members made their way to nearby Saltwater restaurant where they could enjoy the sunlit view of Fingal Bay as well as excellent choices from the menu. “The fun and friendship that is the hallmark of Probus Club members was in full flight,” said Julia.

The Quarryman By Geoff WALKER

A GREAT advantage for the development of Tilligerry was that the area had its own quarry. This meant that the cost of the road base was very low and the damage to the main road was minimal because there were no heavy long haulage trucks breaking it up. The remains of the old quarry are still there and can be accessed from behind the Marine Rescue Base Station on top of Whitbread Drive. You can also get there via a track behind the Industrial Estate which winds its way

to the old tailings dam at the bottom of the site. Kids used to fish for yabbies there and probably still do. The area was also very lucky to have a large deposit of conglomerate rock. This formed an excellent foundation for local roads. It had large rounded stones inside it and broke up easily after being ripped by a bulldozer and run over by the tracks. Jack Boyd held the lease to the quarry with PSSC having a small interest as well. Mr Boyd used the rock to put in most of the town's

Mission Australia’s Youth Survey By Marian SAMPSON

YOUNG people from Port Stephens and the Myall Coast are not alone when it comes to their concerns about the world. Mission Australia’s new Youth Survey Report 2020 has revealed that young people from NSW aged between 15 to 19 have significant concerns relating to equity and discrimination, COVID-19, the environment and mental health. With 25,800 young people surveyed across the nation for the 19th annual Youth Survey, including 6,639 young people from New South Wales, the report provides evidence of young people’s highest concerns. NSW youth indicated Equity and Discrimination, COVID-19, the environment and mental health as the most

important issues in Australia today. Nearly three in 10 young people from NSW reported they had been treated unfairly in the past year, most commonly due to gender. Other reasons for unfair treatment were race/cultural background and mental health. Mission Australia’s State Director Nada Nasser said, “This year, we’re hearing very strongly that our young people see discrimination as a major issue in Australia, and are very concerned about unfair treatment, with gender inequality being at the forefront of their concerns. “The message is that young females and young males are concerned about gender inequality in Australia – and we mustn’t explain away or dismiss young people’s concerns as gender politics. Nasser believes that the

day-to-day experiences of youth, alongside escalating media coverage, public dialogue and grassroots movements such as Black Lives Matter, are likely influencers. She is calling for national leadership on issues of equity and discrimination, The challenges of 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic have greatly impacted the wellbeing of young people. Significantly, close to half of young people in NSW felt stressed either all of the time or most of the time. Mental health also was highlighted as an important issue. In NSW, more than four in 10 young people are extremely or very concerned about coping with stress and over one third of NSW respondents are extremely or very concerned about mental health. “Young people deserve

every opportunity to not just survive, but to thrive and be heard. “Ultimately, how we look

MIDCOAST Council is seeking feedback from the community about its revised Community Donations Policy. The revised draft Community Donations Policy, is being placed on exhibition for community feedback, to assist organisations to deliver projects and activities that support local connections and the retention of unique, diverse and culturally rich communities across the MidCoast.

While the policy was first adopted by Council in March 2019, the revised policy was submitted to Council in May this year, with minor amendments relating to wording in relation to eligibility. Councillors have since workshopped the updated policy and it was decided at this week’s meeting that it will go on public exhibition, with all feedback provided by the community to come back to Councillors. With the amendments,

the multi-faceted program proposed in the policy still aims to support social connections through programs and partnerships and is designed to allow funds to be allocated to changing community priorities. Proposed changes to the policy are: the inclusion of ‘Innovation’ as a principle guiding the implementation of the policy - the specific exclusion of schools and P&C organisations from eligibility

- the inclusion of the applicant’s current financial position in the assessment criteria - changing ‘essential community services’ to ‘emergency services’ for eligibility for the Recurrent Donations Program (Rates and Fixed) to provide clarity around eligibility - the removal of the word ‘registered’ in the definition of Eligible Organisations Council’s Policy Committee has also recommended that the review

Tonight, in “The Mark of the Poisoner’s Pearl”, Nancy discovers a connection between the poison that killed Tiffany and a serial poisoner from 17 years earlier.

Laughter really is the best medicine, and this acclaimed sell-out stand-up performance is sure to have you in stitches. Greg Davies – who you might recognise from The Inbetweeners or Taskmaster – was stung by his mother’s comment that he might not be quite “normal”. So he’s on a mission to probe the human psyche to find out if anyone is. Quizzing his audience and pondering their responses, this is by no means scientific, but as all good comedians do, Davies shows us our flaws with such wit that we can’t help but laugh at the pettiness of the constant pursuit of fitting in.

SATURDAY

GOOD ONYA MATE: RURAL AID CONCERT

NBN, 7.30pm

Not only do Australia’s farmers have to contend with bushfire, floods and drought, but this year they have faced the added challenge of COVID-19. Thankfully, charity Rural Aid is keeping an eye out for these Aussie battlers. Following the success of 2019’s Buy a Bale concert, Rural Aid and Channel Nine are getting the band back together for another bumper night of entertainment and fundraising. Richard Wilkins and Allison Langdon present performances from Jimmy Barnes, Birds of Tokyo, Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy (pictured), Kate Ceberano, Mick Lindsay and Lee Kernaghan, to name a few. It’s a big night in for a tremendous cause, and a great way to get your live music fix. 2711

HOW TO SECURE A PREMIUM PRICE “What’s the best way I can achieve a premium price for my property?” WELL done for proactively thinking how best to achieve a premium price! There is no single factor. Premium results are a compilation of many things; the process beginning well before listing day. Key is your property’s overall presentation. Neat and tidy inside and out, gardens included. Hearing research for over 40s

20% of Salamander Bay residents over 40 experienced hearing loss in last three years

By Doug CONNOR

A NEW study from Specsavers Audiology suggests that 614, or 20%, of Salamander Bay residents aged 40 and over have experienced some hearing loss in the last 3 years. Of those Salamander Bay residents over 40 who have suffered hearing loss, 338 individuals chose to leave their hearing loss untreated despite help being available to them. The study, which was conducted by YouGov for Specsavers between 29 September and 8 October 2020, also indicated that of men aged 40 and over, nearly a quarter (24%) have had some hearing loss in the last three years compared to women of the same age at 15%. “There’s a perception that hearing loss is only experienced by the elderly, but the research shows it is also affecting generations before, with a large portion of those being aged in their 40s and 50s,” said Specsavers Salamander Bay Audiology Professional

Simone Jolly. The study also revealed that 56% of Australians over the age of 40 have not had their hearing checked in the last three years. Ms Jolly said that early intervention was key to preventing long term hearing loss. “We know that on average, it takes Australians 7-10 years to acknowledge they have hearing loss before taking action, so we are encouraging Salamander Bay locals to be vigilant about hearing checks to make sure they receive the support they need, when they need it. “When it comes to hearing health, prevention is best so watch out for signs of hearing loss, because some conditions are better treated when diagnosed early so you can not only avoid the physical problem but also the emotional toll that comes with it. “Poor hearing can push people to withdraw from social scenarios or even cause severe stress as they find it hard to communicate with others,” she said.

We have become so used to autocorrect that we no longer have to think and many people have become sloppy writers. Now, let's turn to your question. Tom, it very much depends on the context. I'll throw you some examples to illustrate: Counsellor Mufti Moo is an absolut moron. How'd he even get a job on counsel? In this example, the writer is being derogatory and negative, so you would have every right to say, look champ, for someone who has three spelling mistakes in two sentences, who are you to criticise? A social media argument would ensue with other people weighing in and you could happily spend your evening engaging in some wholesome argybargy until one of you gave up and decided cleaning the budgie cage or stabbing yourself with a blunt instrument was a more fruitful and satisfying way to end the day. If, however, the post was along the lines of: Dear neighbours, my 14-year-old Labarador has gone missing and I'm desprat to find her. Please let me know if you spot her. She answers to Lottie, it would be poor form to say, well, you shouldn't even have a Labrador if you don't know how to spell the breed. Maybe Lottie has gone to retrieve a dictionary to show you how to spell desperate. Writing that response is just nasty, but a quite clever insertion of the word retriever (get it? Golden Retriever?). The point I am trying to make is that there's a time and place for being a pedant. Maybe reserve your intelligence for a more worthy platform. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Woolworths and OzHarvest Christmas Appeal Tomaree Peninsula residents can help feed six million Australians with launch of Woolworths and OzHarvest Christmas Appeal

FOLLOWING what has been a difficult year for many Australians, Woolworths across NSW is encouraging customers to give back to people in need this Christmas, through its annual OzHarvest Christmas Appeal. Research from Foodbank’s Hunger Report revealed a significant increase in the number of Australians seeking food relief and support as a result of the pandemic, with 3 in 10 Australians experiencing food insecurity for the first time whilst the number of Australians seeking food support at least once a week has doubled to 31% when compared to 2019. 2020 marks Woolworths’ twelfth year of support for Australian food rescue organisation OzHarvest, and Woolworths’ 6th annual OzHarvest Christmas Fundraising Appeal, with this year’s goal to raise $3 million dollars which will provide six million meals to Aussies in need. Woolworths kickstarted the Appeal with a $500,000

donation. From now until December 24, customers at Woolworths Nelson Bay and Woolworths Salamander Bay who spend over $30 at the self-checkout will have the option to make a donation to the Appeal by rounding-up the cost of their shop to the nearest dollar. Customers can also choose to make a 50 cent donation when they shop, with each donation helping to provide one nutritious meal to a person in need. OzHarvest State Manager New South Wales, Richard Watson said, “The ongoing financial and economic impacts of COVID-19 means more Australians are experiencing food insecurity than ever, with many going without a meal at Christmas time. “We’re asking Woolworths Nelson Bay and Woolworths Salamander Bay customers to show their generosity by donating to this year’s OzHarvest Christmas Appeal to help keep our wheels turning and provide vital food relief this holiday

season and beyond. “This fantastic appeal will help provide six million meals to Aussies in need.” With the pandemic, devastating bushfires and drought affecting so many Australians in 2020, new research by Woolworths found that more than 40 percent of Aussies believe it is more important to give back this year than in 2019. Woolworths Nelson Bay and Woolworths Salamander Bay Group Manager, Leisa Tynan said, “As Woolworths Nelson Bay and Woolworths Salamander Bay customers get ready to celebrate Christmas, it’s important to remember those in the community who will be doing it tough this season. “We’re always amazed by the generosity of our customers and we’re encouraging those who are in a position to help to donate and help make a real difference to those who need it most.” Woolworths is also bringing back its popular limited-edition Santa Cookies

q OzHarvest delivery driver Olivia Penner-Dilworth. which will be available in store from 25 November 2020. 50 cents from every packet sold will go to

OzHarvest to help the charity feed Australians in need. Woolworths has partnered with OzHarvest since 2008 to help reduce

food waste by providing surplus fresh food from their supermarkets to Aussies who would otherwise go without.

Nelson Bay Turtles Dispatch Warners Bay At Don Waring Oval FROM Page 20

who made 42 runs off 65 balls including five 4s that helped set the platform for an attacking bowling and fielding session. Tommy Marshall backed up the Turtles’ dominance with the willow and took 4/12 with the red ball off of only 3 overs. Marshall also grabbed the last scalp to finish the match in the 27th Over well before the 35 Over maximum that saw Warners Bay all out for 85. The day saw plenty of noted Nelson Bay cricket loyalists out and about to watch the match with numerous frosted eskies getting a workout as the sun

Out in the middle the early humidity made for a slow pitch, but as the day warmed the track firmed and the outfield began to run. The Turtles’ Matty Palmer and Tyler Austin created some pressure as the Turtles took the ball and the lightning bolts they were sending had the Warners Bay batters opting for a defensive approach with the wood in hand. Turtles Captain Dougie

Rowland maintained the pressure with his fielding placements, but when Matt Sharpe went down with a knee injury during a bowling spell it looked like the Turtles could be troubled missing a man. The Turtles maintained their aggression with the ball though and after drinks they turned the vice on Warners Bay and the wickets toppled like the Roman Empire after Odoacer knocked Romulus on the head in 476 AD. Warners Bay were all out

for 85 and the Turtles looked polished being able to get the win a man down. Tommy Marshall took home the accustomed silverwater for best on ground for the Turtles while Arwan Alluri snagged 3/15 from his 6 overs with the kookaburra for Warners Bay. The Turtles are away this week facing off against the Premier Hotel Pub Team at Adamstown. Marvellous stuff that!

DEAR BUSINESS OWNERS
