Australian’s Hit The Road In Caravans For 2020 Summer Holidays

q Janne and Geoff Hardy have spent many days at the Little Beach Caravan Park and love living on the road in their van.

By Marian SAMPSON AS we holiday this year, many of us are dusting off a caravan and planning to hit the highway. Whether you are a fan of the van or consider them to be mobile road blocks – it’s a given this holiday season there will be more caravans on the roads across the country than usual. Many will wind their way to the Bay, across to Hawks Nest and onward up the legendary Pacific Coast Road towards Queensland over the holidays. November sees the launch of Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s ‘Caravan / RV Road Safety’ initiative. In the coming months, approximately 14 million nights and 3.3 million camping trips

Many of these will be spent in Port Stephens, on the Myall Coast and even in and around Coffs Harbour. “Safety is always important but with an expected surge in travel this summer with over 741,000 registered RVs (Recreational Vehicles) in Australia and additional interest from ‘first timers’ due to Covid preventing international holidaying, now is a crucial time to put this messaging ‘front of mind’,” said Keelan Howard, GM of Marketing and Communications, Caravan Industry Association of Australia. Of course it goes almost without saying that we need to make sure we are travelling safely, that we take breaks every two hours and that we carry water in case there are delays on the roads. However for caravanners there are extra considerations, like planning which rest stops are suitable for the rig, the appropriate use of rest stops including truck rest areas, vehicle preparation, sharing the road with trucks, UHF communication and towing will be promoted and shared. Port local Chontelle Grecian shared her family caravanning safety preparation tips with News Of The Area. “Have a detailed checklist that you run through before every trip to ensure everything is stowed and secure; check and/or replace wheel bearings and supports of van once every 12 months; check tyre pressure before every trip; check lights and indicators are operational before every trip; carry spare bulbs for exterior van lights and indicators; and carry a quality toolkit and caravan jack for unforeseen occurrences.” It is recommended by regular caravanners that you communicate with trucks and offer to back off when they can pass, and if you are heading interstate there may be additional rules such as trucks and roadtrains on Queensland's single lane tarmac development roads have right of way where other vehicles must pull off the tarmac and allow them to pass.

Nelson Bay Goes Blue By Marian SAMPSON

q Leah Andeson President of Business Port Stephens in Magnus Street where the streets have been stamped to define the shared 10km zone. Photo by Marian Sampson.

NELSON Bay is changing at the moment with new road markings designating the shared zone having been stamped on the 10km zones. Business Port Stephens has been advocating for the zones to be more clearly defined for drivers since 2018. The blue lines stamped on the shared areas on the roads are to be alternate with a sandstone colour stamping over the remaining bitumen which will be added at a later date. Council is also creating five parklets which will replace existing parking spaces on Magnus Street. The work is a result of Council successfully attaining government grant funding. The parklets will allow for additional seating for restaurant patrons due to

COVID-19 restrictions. Leah Anderson President of Business Port Stephens said, “It is my understanding that the parklets won't be able to be removed during the day even if the restaurant adjacent isn’t trading, however they are removable structures. “These are going in and they might be in for 3 months or 6 months, again depending on what the use is, and the feedback from the community.” The parklets will be able to be redeployed at other locations to meet community needs. “We do have the space in the new park that is underutilised that joins Yacaaba Street and Victoria Parade that could potentially allow for diners without losing parking spaces,” she said. Business Port Stephens has been approached by some traders who are wary and

disappointed over the loss of the parking spaces as each space denotes dollars spent every time it is turned over. The intention originally for the parklets was determined in the midst of COVID-19 restrictions and restaurants could no longer cater to as many diners as they previously had, consequently those businesses were losing a lot of trade. Council has been working to increase vibrancy in the township and the parklets are a part of this concept, it is hoped that they will encourage people to spend more time dining in and around town, however some traders believe that there is ample space if dining establishments are allowed to utilise the wider footpaths in front of non-dining establishments whilst leaving adequate room for foot traffic to move around town.

Stations Survey shows Popular Result By Marian SAMPSON

PORT Stephens FM is a local community based radio station. Run by volunteers and catering to the local audience, the radio station delivers a selection of mostly 50’s - 80’s music. The organisation recently conducted a survey which they believe shows that the station and its volunteers shine. 400 randomly selected residents were surveyed between Tomaree Head and Lemon Tree Passage. Of these surveyed, 323 respondents were aged over 50 years old. 66% of respondents were aged over 60 years of age with 43% of respondents aged over 70 years of age. It is in this age group where Port Stephens FM appear to do well. 19% of respondents were

aged under 49 years of age. The independent research report showed that “From Tomaree Head to Lemon Tree Passage, your Community radio station, Port Stephens FM, is the most listened-to.” The station’s strategy of targeting the more mature age group is clearly effective and this is reflected in the survey results. Whilst the station does have a number of more specialist programs, the main focus during prime listening hours is on rock and pop music from the 60’s through to the 80’s – the exact preference of its listeners, as the survey results show. The emphasis on Australian content was also appreciated by its listeners. What appealed most to listeners was the mix of music that the station played and the fact that it was local and had news and information

questions, no paperwork, they just provide financial support when needed.” Kaylee still undergoes regular bone marrow aspirations and other invasive procedures and will have late effects from her treatments, some of which will be with her for life. “Support from strangers makes you feel less alone, knowing that people are willing to help your child and sending love and support to your child is amazing,” Alana said. The reality is when you have a child with cancer, the demands are unrelenting, 24/7, and you never know what the next 24 hours will bring. The additional stress of COVID only amplifies the challenges these families face every day. Redkite is a lifeline for these families, providing the real and essential practical, financial and emotional support they need. The organisation receives

no government funding to deliver these frontline services to help these families get through each day. This year Redkite has seen demand for our counselling and support service increase by more than 30 per cent and requests for financial assistance were up by more than 15 per cent, as many already stretched families fell victim to COVID economic woes. Sadly at the same time, Redkite has also been significantly impacted losing more than $1 million in revenue being able to run its flagship annual fundraising events due to the virus. Redkite needs help to enable them to deliver essential services to an evergrowing number of families who have a child with cancer, including those in your local community. FOR families with a child with cancer, COVID-19 has been devastating and they need more support than ever. The emotional and financial cost of having a child on treatment for cancer cannot be underestimated. Salamander Bay’s Hodgson family knows this only too well. Kaylee, who is nine, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and due to her high risk disease the family was split in half with her undergoing treatment in Sydney while her brothers stayed in the Bay. Housing stress to rise

Mayoral Column THE search is over! After a competitive expression of interest process, the lease for the long-awaited Medowie Sport and Community Facility has officially been signed and is set to open in January. I am so pleased that experienced Port Stephens locals Ben and Charlie Way of the Little Beach Boathouse will be at the helm, opening Medowie Social — a community and family-focused venue. I want to thank the community of Medowie who have been patiently waiting for us to find the right operator for this incredible facility and I think it's safe to say the wait has been worth it. Medowie Social will provide the community and it’s surrounds with a much-needed affordable and quality venue for sports, events and recreational activities where our entire community feels welcome. Overlooking Ferodale Oval, Medowie Social will offer meeting spaces, bistro, bar, outdoor seating, a children’s playground, synthetic bowling green, a multipurpose events space and 100 car parking spaces. Supporting our local business community is important to us all and Medowie Social promises to focus on fresh, local produce from the area where possible — sourcing from our oyster farmers and anglers to market gardens, olives, macadamias, avocados and much more. You might have also heard we are soon launching an exciting new produce market in the grounds of Medowie Social, which will continue to support local farmers and growers and create a family-friendly event for the local community. I hope to see you all at Medowie Social, 36A Ferodale Road, Medowie when it opens its doors in the coming weeks.

THE Hunter’s private rental market has been largely unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic with rents across the region showing solid gains in the year to September. Compass Housing economist, Martin Kennedy, said the local market has been remarkably resilient compared to Sydney where rents in some areas have fallen by as much as 20%. Mr Kennedy said that data from the NSW Government Rent and Sales Report September 2020 quarter shows that, overall, rents in Newcastle are up by 3.7% compared to the same time last year. Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens have performed even better with rents up roughly 5%, while in Cessnock median rents have jumped by 7.3% over the course of the year. “This is obviously good q

Across the Hunter region roughly 16,000 more people are out of work compared to the start of the year. The unemployment rate in Newcastle increased to 9% in September after falling to 7% the previous month but remains below the June peak of 11.1%. Mr Kennedy said the combination of higher unemployment and rising rents was concerning. “We know that JobKeeper and the coronavirus supplement were the only things keeping a lot of people’s heads above water,” he said. “With those payments being phased out, and rents still rising, there is a strong Compass Housing economist Martin Kennedy. chance we could news for landlords, but bad news for renters, particularly those on lower incomes, who may have lost their jobs due to COVID-19,” Mr Kennedy said.

Making Christmas happen for farming families AUSSIE Helpers is calling on everyday Australians to help make Christmas feasible for hundreds of farming families around Australia by purchasing hampers of essential goods. The economic burden of years of drought coupled with a crippling pandemic means many farming families are facing the very real prospect of skipping Christmas due to financial stress. Aussie Helpers CEO Tash Kocks said that this year had proven to be one of the most gruelling for farmers already struggling to make ends meet. “Aussie farmers have battled

seasonal labour shortages, volatile commodity prices, international trade tensions and recession all the while recovering from devastating bushfires and one of the longest droughts in living memory,” Ms Kocks said. “Farmers keep our fridges and pantries full but sometimes struggle to feed themselves. “It’s heartbreaking the dire reality of their situations.” With support from Woolworths and Real Pet Food, Aussie Helpers’ Christmas hampers are filled with everyday

pantry essentials and a few festive treats to ensure isolated farming families can celebrate the festive season. “In 2019 we wanted to make Christmas as special as it could be, but this year we just want to make sure that farmers can simply celebrate Christmas at all,” Ms Kocks said. “At Aussie Helpers, every dollar and every hour volunteered helps Aussie farmers in need. “By purchasing a hamper this year, you’re giving farmers

more than just groceries and treats. “You’re also telling them they are important and valued.” Last year the Aussie Helpers Christmas campaign delivered more than 1,000 hampers to farmers all over Australia. “I’m constantly in awe of the Australian spirit we see shine through no matter how bad it gets but this festive season if we can dig deep it will make a real difference to Australians at the heart of our country,” Ms Kocks said. The hampers are available at $50 and $100 dollars and can be purchased in time for Christmas at aussiehelpers.org.au. Alternatively, donors can buy gift vouchers that allow farmers in distress to purchase the goods they need from local businesses. q Locals can help make the holidays easier for farming families.

Kevin Tomlinson told News Of The Area, “Members enjoyed a delicious three course lunch in great company. “The Greenhouse had everything set up to comply with Covid-19 requirements and it made members feel relaxed as they enjoyed the lunch time get-together.” Between courses lucky tickets were drawn for the fantastic Christmas Baskets, a tradition at the Club, and those members lucky to win one were very happy when they left for home with their “goodies”. There was a presentation to two club members, as Gladys and David reached their 10 Year membership of the Club. “After thanking James and staff from The Greenhouse for the excellent food and service, the prizes were drawn for two Half Leg Hams and those winners were very happy with the bonus for Christmas,” he

always this way. The original club was built in 1981 but ran into trouble being unable to service its debt during a recession. It closed its doors in 1985 and reopened three

years later after the State RSL bought out the debt. The new board then leased both the club and the surrounding hectares from the new owners. Ron Curry, recently reelected President takes up the story, “In the 18 years I've been on the board we have increased the turnover to such an extent that we have bought back the clubhouse site and the area in front towards the main road. “On top of this, we completed a major overhaul of the building.

“We had also amalgamated some time back with the Golf Club,” he added. “Since the upgrade, the trading has really taken off and we look forward to being debt free in the near future,” he said. And the secret to success? Ron is full of praise for the herculean efforts of the dedicated staff and the volunteer input from members. “When the call went out, members came from all directions to both reconstruct the clubhouse and help out at the Golf Club.

“It simply would not have been possible without their contribution,” he said. So what of the future? Ron says that the board will continue to plough profits back into the club with improved facilities for the members, their guests and the wider community. “It's been a long journey but satisfying to see how we have made our community a far better place than it was all those years ago,” he remarked.

Take a trip to Stroud this Christmas

By Samantha COOKE

FOR the second year in a row, Stroud businesses are joining forces to create an outdoor twilight shopping experience. With many events being cancelled throughout the year, business owners on Cowper Street are ensuring Christmas festivities are full steam ahead, preparing special offers for shoppers on December 11, from 5pm 8pm. In aims to bring tourism back to the small town, the market encourages the theme of ‘locals supporting locals’ according to owner of Stroud Hardware Lea Gartrell.

“We’ve found a lot of people from out of town have been really supporting us lately, just wanting that local product.” Success from the previous event, created by Stroud Hardware along with next door store Crafty Friends, has encouraged the whole street to participate this year with a range of locally sourced artwork and products available for purchase. “We’ve all got unique stuff, most of it is made in the local area and very close surrounding areas,” she said. “So, you’re not only supporting the local store here but you’re supporting a

lot of local artists.” After major events like the Stroud Rodeo and Stroud Country Fair were cancelled due to difficulties with complying with COVID restrictions, Secretary of Crafty Friends Karen Hutchinson said locals are welcoming a night of enjoyment. “We’ve got sewers, we’ve got one amazing lady that restores furniture with chalk paint, and we have some talented cooks that make beautiful preserves,” she said. “Stroud Butchery does amazing stuff. His meat is greater than great.” Closing their doors for a

few weeks during the initial COVID lockdown, Hutchinson said they have since been getting ‘smashed’ by people travelling to regional areas outside Sydney and Newcastle. “COVID has been a dreadful thing, but by golly it’s been good for regional areas,” she said. “I think people are feeling a bit more secure that we’ve had no cases. “So, they would stop in Stroud, but I would say probably 80 percent of people

went on to Gloucester.” Stroud Hardware will be offering many discounts and handing out six unique hampers to those in need. Crafty Friends will be offering 15 percent discounts storewide, and Stroud Butchery will be teaming up with Stroud Valley Harvest to present ham and pickle tastings. Numerous more specials will be available on the night from neighbouring stores on Cowper Street.

compensation for harm caused. "As the Royal Commission made clear, many survivors of historical abuse were forced to accept completely inadequate settlements from major institutions and sign deeds as part of this that saw them having to waive their rights to a future civil claim," Ms De Paoli said. "For many survivors that meant being left with little option but to accept compensation that had been harshly minimised in favour of churches or institutions - with survivors forced into inadequate schemes far below what they deserved and without proper advice

regarding their legal rights. "The reforms announced today are a significant step in seeking to address this injustice, including importantly ensuring that survivors who were forced to accept inadequate settlements can now also bring a further civil claim to be compensated appropriately. "We welcome this announcement that will help to enhance access to justice for survivors and continue to call on other states still yet to act on this reform to do so with urgency," she said.

Lifting deeds of release for abuse survivors LAWYERS have welcomed the New South Wales Government’s announcement to set aside deeds of release, saying the reform was a significant step in improving access to justice for survivors of abuse. Maurice Blackburn NSW head of abuse law Danielle De Paoli said the reforms which are due before the NSW Parliament early next year would bring New South Wales in line with Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria in ensuring survivors of abuse could receive fair and appropriate

VICTORIA

ABC, 7.30pm

If you are a semi-reluctant TV viewer who feels the need to justify hours spent in front of the box, then period dramas – especially those based on real royal families – are ideal. They are essentially a stylish and engaging history lesson, no? In its third season, we’ve seen Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman) navigate ruling a kingdom while navigating messy international politics and the birth of her sixth child. Who says she can’t have it all? In tonight’s season finale, the world is watching as the Great Exhibition in London’s Hyde Park is opened to the public. The anticipation and pressure cause strain on Albert’s (Tom Hughes) health.

Okay, so there is a high chance that you or someone close to you has made a faux pas in recent times for lack of awareness of the speed of change. The OK symbol, for example. Once, not so long ago, we all made the thumb and forefinger circle as a way to innocently describe being, well, okay! But when symbols are appropriated and meaning changed, should we stop or fight for what we know? In this episode, Kirsten Drysdale (pictured) and Zoe Norton Lodge explore the changing meaning of the OK hand sign, the name Karen and lollies that are far from politically correct in their branding, to ask what happens when we are on the wrong side of change?

ONE LANE BRIDGE

7TWO, 9.30pm

Who doesn’t love a murder mystery? Especially one set before the picturesque backdrop of Queenstown, with a dark and supernatural edge? One Lane Bridge, which premieres tonight, is not just about the gory details. It has a character-focused narrative and twists and turns as we peel back layers of truth in the small town. Young detective Ariki Davis (Dominic Ona-Ariki, pictured) arrives in town full of hope and ambition. His first case examines the death of local Grub Ryder, whose body was found at the bottom of the infamous One Lane Bridge. In the process of uncovering truth, Ariki uncovers his own hidden supernatural abilities. Binge-worthy drama. 0412

Dear Jasminda,

My daughter recently confessed to stealing a packet of false eyelashes. Now she's playing Grand Theft Auto. This is a worrying pattern. Mrs Wendy B.

SUMMER STYLING TIPS “I’m going to list my house this Summer. Is there anything special I should do to ensure it always presents well during the hot weather?” WITH less competition in the property market, Summer is now a popular time to list, so you’re making a good decision. It can be incredibly hot over that period so I suggest you tailor your soft furnishings to a ‘cool’ colour scheme. Keep colours to light blue, lemon, white, blush pink and mint green tones – all colours that project a calm, cool vibe. Also keep overall furnishings to a minimum to give a heightened sense of space which is much cooler than lots of furniture and accessories which tends to look cluttered and hot. Spend as much time as you can on your garden; watering, trimming and keeping trees and plants alive. Not only will your garden present strongly, leafy trees give lovely cooling shade and upright, healthy greenery and flowering plants is far better than sad, wilted plants. A water feature, even a birdbath is another way to make your garden feel chilled. I know it can be difficult to keep lawns green during times of water stress, but if you can water, do so and give your property that added street appeal. Denise

Proposal to introduce a Ferry and Cruise Service to the Tomaree Headland

THE Tomaree Headland Heritage Group Inc is seeking support for the introduction of Public Transport to the Tomaree Headland utilising the Port Stephens waterway with Ferry and Cruise Services. To achieve this we believe there is a strong case for the reinstatement of the Jetty (with a pontoon) previously located on the Tomaree Headland foreshore and provides the opportunity to: 1. Provide Public Transport access to the Tomaree Headland and the State Government funded National Parks and WLS Tomaree Coastal Walk by allowing access to Ferry and Cruise operators. This will go a long way towards addressing the already very constricted parking and traffic management at the Headland and also the proposed Coastal Walk will undoubtedly attract increased visitation. Access by Coach is also challenging. Approximately 200,000 plus people visit the Tomaree Headland every year which creates huge challenges and pressure on the existing parking facilities. 2. Introduction of ferry and cruise services to the Headland has the potential to provide a significant new Tourism product for Port Stephens particularly if a more extensive service is offered to link the various existing jetty facilities at Nelson Bay, Bannisters, Soldiers Point Marina and even

Lemon Tree. Accordingly, we believe the reinstatement of the Jetty on the Tomaree Headland foreshore should be particularly embraced in the Tomaree Coastal Walk Master Plan as a Public Transport option. In saying this, we are totally supportive of the proposed Tomaree Coastal Walk as it will become a significant tourism asset for Port Stephens and note that their master plan includes a section of their walkway which will connect with the original Jetty site. The Jetty proposal will also provide access and the opportunity to showcase the significant History which adorns the Tomaree Headland. The Headland has many significant historic elements including the Torpedo Platform and other WW11 relics as well as other cultural history such as Indigenous and marine. Accordingly there is a strong case for the reinstatement of the Jetty and will reduce the reliance on parking at this extremely popular visitor attraction which will significantly enhance the potential for the Tomaree Headland to become a Nationally Significantly Visitor attraction as well as having State and local significance. The Headland has an impressive list of significant heritage items, highlighting a rich history which needs to be restored, preserved, protected, and interpreted to ensure realisation of their full potential.

LOOKING TO SELL?

Dear Wendy, My goodness, how far we have regressed from our proud convict roots when men like good old Henry Pye were sent from Essex to Van Diemen's Land in 1831 for stealing pigs. Aged 38, Henry was a stoutly-built ploughman, married with nine children. I'd suggest that with that many offspring he probably took the gamble thinking any punishment was better than another couple of decades with that many whining mouths to feed. Hard labour, sunburn and regular floggings were no doubt an attractive alternative. And now we have your daughter who could only manage a packet of false eyelashes. Hardly the stuff of legend, Wendy. I can see her now, batting her lashes at the local law enforcement officer who didn't have the heart to give her anything more than a reprimand, suffering, as he was, from disillusionment after he joined the boys in blue in order to scope out mob wives and uncover drug syndicates. Instead, he got the local shopping centre beat with his biggest undercover find to date being a pensioner's keys misplaced in the fruit and veg section at Coles. I wouldn't be too concerned about this blip on your daughter's moral compass. The fact she confessed is a good sign. I'd suggest her punishment should be extended. She could perhaps buy some Christmas gifts for children her age who have far greater needs than synthetic lash extensions. Get rid of the Grand Theft Auto game too. Or maybe give it to the policeman so he can fantasise about the day when he gets promoted to undercover agent, rising through the ranks of organised crime and dressing in understated mobster black. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
