Pensioners Taskforce By Tara CAMPBELL MEMBERS of the Port Stephens community were invited to attend a Pensioners Taskforce forum last week in Nelson Bay, hosted by Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson and Julian Hill, Member for Bruce and Deputy Chair of the Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit. Julian Hill is the Secretary of the Protecting Pensioners Taskforce, an ongoing task force hosted by the opposition, aiming to connect with and advocate for seniors across Australia. Locals of Port Stephens made their voice heard at the
forum, discussing fears of the Cashless Welfare Card, lack of appropriate health services in the region and cuts to Medicare funding. ‘We want to find out what issues are relevant to the community so we can fight for them and advocate for those we represent,” Ms Swanson said. Julian Hill said that although COVID restrictions had halted plans to discuss the Pensioners Taskforce in Nelson Bay, after six months of rescheduling, he was eager to hear what residents had to say. “We’re doing this right around the country, firstly to listen to people, and then to take the issues that we're seeing, particularly common issues, back to either our policy development or to the Government, if we are given

FROM Page 1 the great privilege after the election,” Mr Hill said. Julian said commonly discussed issues included the crisis in aged care following the Royal Commission in which 148 recommendations were made and only half have been responded to, the 900 cuts which were made to Medicare funding and rebates during the pandemic, online scams and cyber security and the social security system, particularly the cashless welfare card. This was supported on the day, with many residents raising these common issues. “During COVID, there was a freeze to the pension and over the past few years, there
have been some of the largest cuts to the Pension which has greatly affected the quality of life for many of our oldest residents. “Over 50,000 people in Australia have signed the petition to scrap the cashless welfare card and we’re listening to this- the community have made it known that this is not wanted and that it needs to be abolished,” Mr Hill said. “We don’t always get it perfect, but we’re committed to listening and acting based on those we represent,” he concluded.
CORRECTION NEWS Of The Area would like to offer correction to a story printed in last week’s edition of Port Stephens NOTA. The story ‘Dr Shortages and DPA Reclassification could penalise Port Stephens’ (p6, 31 March 2022 Edition) incorrectly stated that the whole of the Port Stephens LGA was classified as a
Distribution Priority Area (DPA) region, a status that identifies areas where people don’t have enough access to doctors, based on the needs of the community. In fact, only parts of the LGA are classified with that status.

rate of recorded criminal incidents per 100,000 population for major offences with Port Stephens now at a ratio of 2.1 for murder offences. The ratio of robbery for Port Stephens has dropped to only 0.2. Overall, recorded crime statistics released by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) show major decreases in crime during both COVID-19 lockdowns.

This fact, combined with previous longterm declines, means many crimes are at historic lows. In 2021, the rate of the following offences was at the lowest level since BOCSAR crime records commenced 27 years ago in 1995: murder, robbery, burglary, car theft, stealing offences and malicious damage to property. Property offences fell sharply during both lockdowns. These crimes remain well below prepandemic levels, even after mobility restrictions have been lifted. Violent crime, by comparison, showed a different pattern during the pandemic. Counts of both sex offences and non-domestic assault, were temporarily low during both lockdowns. However, both promptly returned to pre-pandemic levels once restrictions were eased. Commenting on the findings, Jackie Fitzgerald, Executive Director at BOCSAR, said it was unsurprising that the huge social upheaval caused by the lockdowns had a flow on effect to criminal activity. “What was unexpected is that the downward trend was so consistent across offences. “For those offences that remained low in December 2021, it will be interesting to observe how long it takes for crime rates to return to pre-pandemic levels as NSW residents resume regular activities,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

Calls For Change On Use Of Mayoral Minutes By Marian SAMPSON QUESTIONS continue to be raised about the use of a Mayoral Minute by Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer at the 22 February meeting of Council. While operating within Council rules, questions have been raised within the community about the fairness of its use in the recent attempted sale of 109 Foreshore Drive. The Mayoral Minute delivered at the Council meeting on 22 February, saw the Mayor introduce the motion to sell the land at 109 Foreshore Drive. He then moved the motion, spoke to the motion, ruled the motion to be urgent, used the right of reply on the motion, put the motion, voted on the motion, exercised his casting vote on the motion and declared the motion carried. He then adjudicated on the dissent motion against his own motion, voted on the dissent motion, exercised his casting vote on the dissent motion, and then declared it lost on his casting vote. Port Stephens Councillor Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “The fight continues for 109 Foreshore Drive to be reclassified to community land. “I sent to Council my notice of motion, twelve days before the next Council meeting, to put the iconic waterfront block of land known as 109 Foreshore Drive, back on the Council agenda for fresh community feedback via consultation to re-classify the land and make it safe from being sold. “I was surprised and shocked when the Mayor put up an urgent Mayoral Minute, an hour before the Council meeting, to sell this same block of land, to fund very important community projects, and to make my Notice of Motion a lost cause.” Ms Anderson has questioned why Mr Palmer did not submit the plan to urgently sell the land as a notice of motion, to give Councillors time to think about the issue before voting. “I do not know why he did not put this to Councillors twelve days earlier as a notice of motion, like I had to. “Councillors did not even get to decide not only to sell the land, but what projects should be funded if so. “I personally feel what was done was wrong, and I am sure most of the community feel the same.” Dick Appleby is a long term resident of Port Stephens, and his vast experiences include being an activist, a union official and a company director. Mr Appleby is challenging the use of the Mayoral Minute and the Mayor’s casting votes. “I always took the view that as chair of a meeting, your primary role was to facilitate the debate by assisting all the debaters to
fully explore the issue and reach a wellconsidered resolution of the matter at hand. “If the Mayor really wanted to get this up with some credibility and respect he could have moved an amendment to the existing notice of motion to put his proposal on public exhibition as an alternative to the one being proposed, or he could have just let the Councillors debate the original motion and reach a sensible majority decision based on the facts presented. “These disgraceful tactics just encourage disrespectful behaviour and rancour in the Council meetings and leave the Mayor embroiled in controversy instead of being impartial, above the fray and commanding
the respect that his office deserves.” Mr Appleby is calling for our State Member to look into the ongoing use of Mayoral Minutes. “I cannot find a reason why they exist, and there must be some history somewhere for these ‘god Powers’ to have been granted to Mayors somewhere in the distant past,” he said. In regards to community concerns relating to the use of the Mayor’s casting vote to break voting deadlocks on Council decisions, Tony Wickham, Governance Section Manager, Port Stephens Council said, “All Council meetings are conducted in accordance with Council’s adopted Code of
Meeting Practice. “The adopted Code of Meeting Practice is based on the Model Code of Meeting Practice for Local Councils in NSW. “The Mayor or their representative presiding over the meeting can use their casting vote for or against a motion or amendment. “The Mayor or their representative can also decline to use their casting vote. “This rule applies to all Councils in NSW and has done so for many years,” he said. Mayor Palmer was contacted by News Of The Area on the use of Mayoral Minutes, but declined to comment.

Crime Crackdown or Election Scare Tactics? IN late March Liberal candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell announced plans for a crime crackdown across Port Stephens, Maitland, Rutherford and the Hunter. Ms Vitnell’s plan outlined steps to see crime rates reduced across the community. “I believe the Federal Government can and should take a leadership role in crime reduction and it starts with having a federal representative willing to tackle this issue for the protection of our community,” Ms Vitnell said. “Local residents should feel safe and secure in our community. “Many people have raised concerns with me about an increase in local crime including break-ins, property damage, stolen and burnt-out vehicles and theft.” Ms Vitnell said her ‘crime crackdown’ will include the funding of CCTV infrastructure across areas of concern in the region; and a comprehensive plan to combat anti-social behaviour, working in
conjunction with local organisations funded by the Early Intervention Grant from the Safer Communities Grants Program. “I look forward to working with Port Stephens Council, the local area command, local organisations and community groups on how our community best feels we can combat local crime and prevent and protect community infrastructure,” Ms Vitnell said. Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson described Ms Vitnell’s announcement as a “shameful grab for votes”. “She is running a scare campaign, confusing state and federal issues, and doesn’t understand the way the Safer Communities Grants Program works.” Ms Swanson said there is no funding available under the Safer Communities Grants Program, with round six of the program having closed in August and a seventh round not yet announced. Ms Swanson also raised concerns over the original Safer Communities Grants Program.
The Safer Communities Fund was established in 2016 to boost the efforts of local councils and community organisations to address crime and anti-social behaviour by funding crime prevention initiatives (such as fixed and mobile CCTV and lighting). “The program was introduced by the Liberals in 2016 to deliver on their election promises; only 71 targeted organisations were eligible to apply in the first round,” said Ms Swanson. “An audit of the Safer Communities Fund by the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) has raised questions about the way funds were distributed and recommended greater transparency and accountability.” Across the first eight selection processes over five rounds, $184 million in grant funding was awarded. “According to the ANAO, 699 projects were funded, five applications (worth $1.2 million) assessed as ineligible were approved, 54 percent of funding decisions, covering 60 percent of funding allocated, did not have a clear basis for the decision recorded, and 84 percent of funding awarded to community organisations was to religious organisations.” Ms Swason said Labor is “committed to protecting our community, not scaring them to win votes”. “I continue to work with all groups in Paterson to make our community safer, especially with my state colleagues, as crime prevention is essentially a NSW Government responsibility,” said Ms Swanson.

Emergency Services Update By Tara CAMPBELL
IT’S time for your weekly emergency services update for Port Stephens.
Bushfire Danger Period
April sees the end of what was a very wet Bushfire Danger Period. Permits are no longer required in rural areas, but you still need to advise NSW Rural Fire Service of any plans to burn. For anyone in Raymond Terrace or Heatherbrae, it is still a requirement to seek a fire permit all year round from Fire and Rescue NSW and follow Port Stephens Council's outdoor burning policy. If you’re not sure if you are in an urban area under the supervision of Rural Fire Rescue or Fire and Rescue NSW, reach out to either organisation, and they will be glad to help.

The local impact of Rising Ocean Temperatures By Marian SAMPSON
AUSTRALIA’S reefs and marine ecosystems are at grave risk of mass bleachings and extinction, a marine heatwaves research briefing from the Climate Council has found. Port Stephens is home to Australia’s southern most coral reef at Fly Point. It isn’t just the Great Barrier Reef that is at risk due to rising sea temperatures. The Climate Council briefing, ‘In hot water: Climate change, marine heatwaves and coral bleaching’ was released recently, as a UN reef monitoring delegation touched down to assess the condition of the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef is currently being watched closely by scientists for another possible mass bleaching event, with temperatures up to 3°C higher than average in central parts of the reef. The briefing affirms that last year was the warmest year on record for the world’s oceans. The excess heat absorbed by the ocean in 2021 was equivalent to the energy of seven Hiroshima atomic bombs detonating every second. Near surface waters off south eastern Australia are warming at nearly four times the global average, leading to changes in the distribution of species, species collapse and a decline in biodiversity.
Climate Councillor, climate scientist and Distinguished Professor of Biology at Macquarie University, Lesley Hughes said, “Under a high emissions scenario, the Reef could face bleaching every year as soon as 2044. “This would effectively destroy the Reef and other shallow water reefs worldwide. “The Great Barrier Reef is dangerously close to another mass bleaching event, which would make it an unprecedented and catastrophic fourth such event in six years. “Unless we cut emissions deeply this decade the situation on the reef will only get worse.” The briefing also reveals that heatwaves are having devastating impacts on Australia’s marine ecosystems including seagrass and kelp forests, and on industries including aquaculture, fisheries and tourism. Port Stephens is home to large areas of seagrass which is a food source for turtles and other marine creatures. Dr Scott Heron, ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, James Cook University said, “The last eight years have been the warmest years on record, so it isn’t a surprise that we’ve seen increased frequency and severity of marine heatwaves.
“Summertime heatwaves in that period have had severe impacts on the Great Barrier Reef, which not only affect the Reef and the organisms that live there but also the people whose livelihoods rely upon a vibrant reef, such as tourism operators and commercial fishers.” Port Stephens has a strong tourism industry

associated with our beautiful marine environment and it is also home to a commercial fishing fleet. “It is clear that we need strong action this decade from Australia and from the global community on the primary cause of climate change – fossil fuel emissions.”
Tomago Aluminium Embarks On Recycling Program By Marian SAMPSON
PORT Stephens is home to Australia’s largest aluminium smelter, Tomago Aluminium. Tomago Aluminium has recently signed an agreement with Australia’s largest extruder and distributor of aluminium products,
Capral Aluminium, to supply approximately 550 tonnes of production scrap to Tomago Aluminium annually for remelting. This industry leading arrangement is the first of its kind within Australia, paving the way toward access to low carbon aluminium for
Australian manufacturers. Luke Hawkins, General Manager Supply and Industrial Solutions at Capral Aluminium said, “As far as we are aware this is the first commercial scrap arrangement for postproduction scrap aluminium to be remelted in Australia and we are very excited to be

working on this with the team at Tomago Aluminium.” More than 95 percent of Australia’s scrap aluminium is exported for recycling. In 2020 Australian exporters reported 119,075 tonnes of aluminium were sent overseas, an increase of 25.13 percent on the previous year. “The scrap we provide will be scrap that is generated during the extrusion process, the aluminium billet used by our Penrith plant is supplied by Tomago which means they are able to ensure the alloy of the scrap is known which is critical for the remelt process. “Generally, aluminium smelters have limited capacity for remelt. “This is because of the safety and process risks of contamination. “We’ve worked closely with Tomago to define this arrangement to ensure we provide scrap content which is of value to Tomago and able to be successfully and safely remelted,” Luke said. Within Australia, aluminium production largely relies on coal-fired electricity to power the process. For aluminium smelters like Tomago Aluminium the production chain never stops. Tomago Aluminium uses around ten percent of the New South Wales power supply to produce 590,000 tonnes of
aluminium per year. Commenting on the new arrangements, Tomago Aluminium CEO Matt Howell said, “We are delighted to be able to close the loop for Capral and Tomago in a true ‘cradle to grave’ aluminium alloy supply and recycle arrangement. “Best of all, the product that is made in NSW is now recycled in NSW. “With global supply chains experiencing significant disruption and carbon footprint an increasing consideration, these new arrangements do not require international shipping through already congested ports.” Recycling of aluminium alloys at Tomago requires very little electricity and uses a tiny fraction of the energy required to produce primary aluminium. “Often the raw aluminium from our potlines must be cooled from ~950 degrees to ~720 degrees to be processed through the cast products department and having clean, dry extrusion scrap is a perfect way to do this.” “Recycling aluminium requires up to 95 percent less energy than production from ore, avoiding emissions, including greenhouse gases. “This is a critical and important step for Capral and Tomago Aluminium; let’s call it the first significant step towards developing local
circularity for Capral. “We are excited to embark on this journey with such a progressive and committed supplier and look forward to developing opportunities to build a local market for low carbon aluminium in Australia,” Luke said. Climate Action Port Stephens (CAPS) President Alisha Onslow told News Of The Area, “Any industrial initiative that reduces greenhouse gas emissions is to be applauded. “The process of recycling scrap aluminium uses far less energy than that of primary production from ore. “However, the major benefit of local processing for the planet is in eliminating the emissions that are part and parcel of international shipping. “The aluminium industry is to be commended for attempting to reduce its carbon footprint. “We hope that Tomago Aluminium – the biggest energy user in the nation – can deliver on its expressed intention to shift towards 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. “We would be concerned about the use of gas as backup, unless of course the choice of gas is green hydrogen,” she said.

The Stronger Communities Programme supports the Australian Government’s commitment to deliver social benefits in communities across Australia with Round 7 of the program providing $22.65 million to fund small capital projects in each of the 151
federal electorates. The program intends to encourage and support participation in local projects, improve local community participation and contribute to vibrant and viable communities. Community consultation is a critical element of the program. In consultation with their community, each MP must identify potential applicants and projects in their electorate and invite them to apply for a grant. Invited applications are assessed against the program’s eligibility criteria through a closed non-competitive process.

School Support For Northern Rivers By Marian SAMPSON
WE have all been shocked by the images that have come from the Northern Rivers region after recent flooding events. Even some of the youngest members of our community have felt driven to do something, anything to help. The School Captains of Irrawang High School started a drive to collect donations of bottled water, long life milk, linen, pet food, nappies, toiletries and jerry cans. The school worked with its three of its feeder primary schools - Irrawang Public School, Medowie Public School and Grahamstown Public School - which all took donations from their school communities. q
The response was exceptional - with the school captains not expecting the level of donations which were taken in. This was all planned prior to the second flooding event which has hit the region. Lue Fagan of Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “Jo Cotton is a teacher's aid and she and her husband Brett drove the goods to Lismore this week. “There was a great deal of uncertainty about where the bus would actually deliver to as we were told Lismore collection centres were full. “We found out the afternoon before the bus left. “They ended up at Casino and with help from the ADF unloaded the bus load at the Casino Showground.” The organisers were

assured that “all donations will be given to those that have been impacted by the floods in the Lismore region”. Being centrally distributed from Casino meant the donations could also be distributed to some of the smaller centres that have been ravaged by the flood event in the surrounding areas including Woodburn and Coraki. As soon as the bus was unloaded people were taking the goods. “It was a massive effort and we are so proud of the whole community for their compassion and generosity.” Donations to the schools came from the general public as well as the school community. “Jo did the heavy lifting to make this happen and

everything donated has gone to good use. “We are sending out a special thank you to our school communities and the wider community q
PEP-11 Dead In The Water By Marian SAMPSON
TOURISM operators and environmentalists have a landmark decision to celebrate after Prime Minister Scott Morrison put the final nail in the coffin of the Offshore Petroleum Exploration Permit (PEP-11). There were serious
concerns that if the exploration went ahead that it would significantly negatively impact the migration of Australia’s Humpback Whales. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the Government’s decision under section 59(3) of the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 to propose
to refuse the application has been formalised. “PEP-11 is officially dead in the water,” the Prime Minister said. “I said the project would not proceed on our watch, and that is exactly what has happened. “The decision has been finalised to ensure PEP-11 will

people of the Hunter first”. “The Prime Minister first expressed his opposition to the PEP-11 project during a visit to the Hunter last year,” said Vitnell. “This should quieten the detractors who claimed that PEP-11 wasn’t dead. “The Prime Minister has worked hard to ensure this decision won’t be reversed. “I am especially pleased for the people of Port Stephen’s where the coastal lifestyle is at

the heart of their way of life,” Vitnell said. The New South Wales Government agreed with the Morrison Government’s proposed decision. The National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA) has advised the applicant of the decision.

THE LIVING ROOM
TEN, 7.30pm
If the sneak peek of season 11 of The Living Room is anything to go by, the crew are swinging back to the ’60s for a whole lot of fun. But for hosts Amanda Keller (pictured), Dr Chris Brown, Miguel Maestre and Barry Du Bois, variety is the spice of life. One thing fans can expect from this fun and enthusiastic lifestyle series is the return of The Help Desk and heartwarming stories of lending a hand to people in need, along with a series on travel for dummies and some pretty special dinner guests. It’s reliably fun Friday night fare.
Now that we’re more than halfway through season four of this comfort viewing-style police dramedy, it’s questionable whether we can still call its main protagonist, middle-aged cop John Nolan, a rookie. Played by Nathan Fillion (pictured), who brought his legions of Castle fans along for the law enforcement ride with him, this season really has dialled up the drama. In “Heart Beat”, Nolan is confronted with big moments, both personally and professionally. When a plane crashes in the city, the team races to the scene. Then, in “End Game” Officers Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Bradford (Eric Winter) investigate the murder of a homeless teenager.
BILLY CONNOLLY: MY ABSOLUTE PLEASURE
PRIME7, 7.30pm
When Billy Connolly (pictured right) announced his retirement from stand-up comedy in 2020 due to his battle with Parkinson’s disease, it was upsetting news for fans of the boisterously freewheeling and honest comedian. That same year, the special Billy Connolly: It’s Been a Pleasure, celebrated his amazing 50-year career. Now, fans will be delighted by this heartwarming follow-up, which invites us into Connolly’s new life in the Florida Keys. It’s a cheery, lightweight peek into his new home and routine. The bittersweet clips from his stand-up days drive home what a force of nature he was on stage. 0804

Preservation Of Tomaree Headland Heritage By Marian SAMPSON
THE future of the Tomaree Lodge site has been under a shadow for many years. Since the last of the Department of Human Services residents left the site the Tomaree Headland Heritage Group Inc (THHG) has been lobbying to see the site Heritage listed and saved for community use. The group has now been successful in attracting a $5,000 grant from the recent AGL Newcastle Gas Community funding round. Peter Clough of the THHG told News Of The Area, “This will be used to create a number
of video clips, particularly using drone and QR technology, to highlight the history and opportunities for a future Tomaree Lodge site. “The video clips will potentially include interviews of key local people who represent the military, Indigenous and marine history. “The concept is to use video clips in a community engagement program.” Peter believes developing the video clips and QR codes will complement the preparation of a concept plan which has been commissioned by the THHG for the adaptive re-use of the Tomaree Lodge site to demonstrate its potential

and opportunities, while at the same time recognising the potential of this outstanding heritage listed and world class iconic asset for Port Stephens. THHG plans to use social media along with traditional media to highlight the potential educational and research opportunities, the interpretation and restoration of key heritage assets, including indigenous, military through World War II and marine nature including tours of the oyster hatchery. The site offers several ecotourism opportunities such as history and nature walking tours, possibly serviced by a visitors information centre with
Karuah Place Plan By Marian SAMPSON
KARUAH is joining other destinations and villages within the Port Stephens LGA as a community with a Place Plan endorsed by Council. The village sits on calm riverbanks and is renowned for its magnificent oysters. The village is now bypassed by the freeway, however driving through Karuah doesn’t make your journey north or south much longer, just more scenic. Mayor Ryan Palmer said the endorsed plan its a great outcome for the community. “Karuah is a growing village with a unique connection to the local environment. “The river, wetlands and natural bushland provides valuable habitat for native wildlife and is home to a diverse range of flora and
fauna,” Mayor Palmer said. “The Karuah Place Plan celebrates this connection while striking a balance between the need for new housing, business growth and
job opportunities. “The plan identifies two important biodiversity corridors, alongside potential employment zones and the opportunity to develop 800

new residential lots. “It also contains short, medium and long-term actions to inspire community involvement in creating a better place through conservation, beautification and civic pride projects, activations and event opportunities.” Port Stephens Councillor Jason Wells told News Of The Area, "The development of the Karuah Place Plan helps guide both the council and the community in the future direction of the area. “It gives concrete projects

Faster NBN Access for Paterson By Marian SAMPSON
EVERY family and business knows that fast, reliable internet is necessary. However, in some areas of Port Stephens the speed and reliability of the NBN has become cause for ongoing frustration. Premises in the suburbs of Aberglasslyn, Rutherford and Thornton in Paterson are now eligible to order an upgrade of their NBN connection at no upfront cost to access the fastest speeds available on the

NBN. Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher, said this would support residents of the region, whether that be families or those working from home or local businesses. “This is an important milestone in delivering our $4.5 billion NBN network enhancements, and we are pleased to see these upgrades begin at scale. “This will provide residents of Paterson with
the opportunity to upgrade to ultra-fast broadband speeds of up to 1 Gigabit speeds,” Minister Fletcher said. “Blazing fast broadband speeds like this will enable businesses to access greater productivity gains and access to new markets, and families can enjoy the use of multiple devices, including working and learning from home.” Senator for New South Wales Jim Molan said they were pleased to see NBN Co making further investments in its network in the region.
“As our community continues to get access to more choices for high and ultrafast broadband through the NBN. “This investment will give households more choice, and help produce wider economic opportunities for the benefit of the region’s future,” Senator Molan said. “I am looking forward to seeing future areas being released for ultra-fast speed upgrades in the coming months and seeing the community take advantage of these ultra-fast speeds made available to them.”

“There are a host of opportunities including potentially reinstating the original site Jetty with a pontoon platform to increase public access to the future Tomaree Lodge site, the Tomaree Headland summit and Tomaree Coastal Walk to Birubi Beach. “THHG are grateful to AGL

"Council officers are to be congratulated on the consultative approach taken throughout the development of this plan, including their responsiveness to community feedback on the draft plan, which saw some important changes made to meet community expectations. "The vibrant Karuah community is ready, willing and able to assist in the rejuvenation of the CBD
Minister for Finance, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, said NBN Co are continuing to meet the changing needs of Australians through these network upgrades. “Over the last two years the expectations in the community and their reliance on the NBN have changed significantly. In response, NBN Co is pushing more fibre deeper into its network to bring ultra-fast speeds to meet these expectations,” Minister Birmingham said. “These upgrades will allow eight million homes, or 75 percent of premises in the fixed line footprint to have access to ultra-fast speeds by 2023.” Eligible customers will be able to place orders with participating retailers. NBN Co will make further announcements throughout the year as it completes the design and construction of its Local Fibre Network upgrades in suburbs and towns across Australia. Liberal Candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell told News Of The Area, "Improving the ability for families and businesses across the electorate - from Nelson Bay to Maitland and Kurri Kurri is a passionate focus of mine and so I welcome the Liberal/National Government's extra investment to NBN services. A networking event to launch the Karuah Place Plan is being planned for April, to give the Karuah community, local businesses and Council the opportunity to make new connections and support each other to realise the vision of the plan. "I will continue to fight for more and improved telecommunications services and infrastructure because I know how critical these are to our region. “I'm pleased with this result but there's a lot more to do," she said. Meryl Swanson Member for Paterson, told News Of The Area, “I welcome any improvement to NBN services in our region, but it is embarrassing that this Government keeps having to play catch-up on its botched plan. “Australia has slipped even further in its ranking of broadband speeds. “For nearly a decade, the Liberals and Nationals oversight of the NBN has been a masterclass in technological incompetence and financial mismanagement. “A Labor Government will deliver more for Australians. “We will provide a significant boost to fixed wireless speeds and satellite data allowances. “We will also push much deeper into regional Australia, benefiting up to 660,000 more homes and businesses,” she said.

Jasminda Email Jasminda: media@newsofthearea.com.au Dear Jasminda, I'm continually frustrated with people who don't know the roundabout rules. Surely, they knew them once, when they went for their driving test, but now they unnecessarily stop, switch lanes midway, don't indicate, and a multitude of other sins.
WHAT CAN I DO IN AUTUMN TO HELP MY GARDEN FOR SPRING? “We’re planning to sell in Spring and want to be ready to go at the start. Is there anything we can do with our garden that will stand it in good stead over Winter?” PREPARATION is key and gardens can influence the sale of your home, so congratulations on forward planning! Autumn is a great time to create a strong garden that sails through Winter, so you’re ready to go when Spring arrives. Nourish the soil by composting and mulching. You’ll also reduce weeds, prevent your garden beds from drying out – and importantly, give the impression of a low maintenance garden. Fertilizing and watering your lawn will protect it through winter and give you a lush lawn by early Spring. Plant bulbs. They’ll start to make an appearance late Winter, surprising with a splash of colour and be in full bloom through Spring. Don’t forget to plant trees as Autumn planting gives their roots time to spread out and establish. Keeping water up to them is easier to manage and your new trees won’t be under the pressure they are when planted in the warmer months. When preparing a home for sale, many owners concentrate on the house and interior, but your garden is just as important. And of course, R&R would be delighted to get the ball rolling with a no-cost, obligation-free appraisal!

I have cross-referenced the NSW Roundabout rules with my general experience with roundabouts, and can see some different areas for improvement. I think we could all do with a refresher. 1. Roundabouts manage the traffic flow. Experience: roundabouts are a demonstration of the sheer bloody-mindedness, aggression and indecision of our local residents. If you have an upmarket European car or a jacked-up 4-wheel drive Ute with bull bar and driving lights, this means you automatically have right of way. Everyone will be instinctively aware of this due to their innate need for self-preservation. 2. When you approach the roundabout, you must slow down or stop to give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout. Experience: It doesn't matter what you do, you've got to watch the bloody idiots who do what they want to do anyway (direct quote from my mother). 3. On multi-lane roundabouts, you must follow the direction of the arrows or signs on the road. Experience: The signs are there to make you feel a false sense of security. If Mary from Lemon Tree Passage remembers she needs a loaf of bread at the Pauls Corner roundabout, she'll happily cross lanes without a moment's consideration for anyone. 4. A little-known fact is that there is no requirement to exit a roundabout. Experience: What fun we could all have going round and round the roundabout, never giving way to anyone, until we run out of petrol (though with current fuel prices, this could be an expensive form of irritation to your fellow motorists). Side note: If you go to Canberra, it is almost obligatory that you get unintentionally stuck on this form of looping madness, wondering if you will ever be able to escape. Carpe diem, Jasminda

By Marian SAMPSON SAIL Port Stephens (4-10 April) is underway and the waters of Port Stephens are proving to deliver a great regatta for the 121 vessels competing in the Commodores Cup. The big seas and wild weather leading up to the event saw some of the entrants arrive in the Bay later than usual. Vessels of all sizes racing the dinghy classes are racing in the bay from Wanda Beach at the Sailing Club, with the Commodores Cup fleet racing from a start line at the Nelson Bay Marina Breakwall. Sail Port Stephens creates great viewing from the shores of the Port and excellent photographic opportunities. The yachts start at a modest 25 feet in length with the largest yacht in the fleet the 62 foot ‘Premier Cru’, and spectators should also keep their eyes out for some of the local contenders including ‘51st Project’. Event spokesperson Mark Rothfield told News Of The Area, “We have been lucky this year the marinas have found extra space for us and the regatta is seeing the house full sign up in Port Stephens - this year there is a wait list to participate in the event.” Rothfield likened the event to a sailors' version of a

golf holiday. Port Stephens offers great beach access with beautiful white sandy beaches for the dinghy sailing events. The event is growing and other organisations are joining Sail Port Stephens for their NSW Titles events which adds to the overall appeal of the event for participants and spectators alike. “It is hard to say who is going to shine in the Commodores Cup, ‘51st Project’ usually does really well but everyone is up against some new boats in the fleet which is bringing a whole new dimension to the event. “In good conditions if there is a decent breeze you can have some fun.” Parents can bring their children aged 6-12 years down to Nelson Bay Beach inside the marina on 9 April to try sailing and there will be entertainment and some markets to enjoy.
