season last week and the community turned out in force to enjoy the stunning
of the gentle giants as they migrate north for the winter.

Port Stephens whale watching season officially

The season runs from the end of May to the beginning of October each year.

Whale watching cruises in Port Stephens were started by Imagine Cruises founder Frank Future in 1996.

“In 1996 National Parks and Wildlife estimated the east coast population was down to 1500 whales and that was still a good number as the whaling on humpbacks finished in 1986 and at that time there were only 300 left on the east coast and about the same on our west coast,” Mr Future told News Of The Area.

“Now there are up to around 40,000 whales and they are making a great recovery.

“All whaling stopped on humpbacks around eighteen years ago.”

Interestingly, a team of school girls from Port Stephens played a key role in stopping whaling in the region.

“The school girls leaned on the International Whaling Commission in a way that no one else but a bunch of school kids could have ever done,” Mr Future said.

“We trapped the chairman of the International Whaling Commission in the lift of his hotel in Anchorage, Alaska and the girls just went ballistic on

him.

“It didn’t finish in the delegation, but afterwards the Chairman must have leaned on his Japanese counterpart and they removed the 50 humpbacks that they had put on their hit list for that year.

“They didn’t go whaling for them (humpbacks) after that.”

Whale watchers are now spotting different species of whales in the region, with a blue whale recently sighted off

“We don’t know a lot about blue whales because they were so sought after by the motorised whaling fleets that they were virtually wiped right out.

“Mostly we are seeing pygmy blues.

“Mind you, there is nothing pygmy about a 30 metre whale, given that humpbacks are around fifteen metres and blue whales are twice as long.

“We are starting to see whale populations world wide recovering, mainly in the southern hemisphere.”

Despite the resurgence, there are still threats to the whale population in our waters.

“Countries are hovering (vacuuming) krill.

“Krill is the staple and base in the food chain and the krill is being turned into krill oil.”

Mr Future has an

interesting take on human consumption of the oil.

“If you want to be the size of a whale eat krill oil - don’t do it otherwise.”

Mr Future explained that the krill consumes whale excrement and the whole food chain is responding to that.

The Imagine Cruises founder is asking people to get involved in the new “whaling” - shooting images of these majestic creatures.

At the launch of the whale watching season, the industry was recognised as a very important part of the Port Stephens tourism economy.

The whales trek up the coast now and return around October; many of them accompanied with calves.

The massive marine mammals can be observed from on the water but there are also plenty of good landbased vantage points to view the whales' antics from.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer was on board for the launch of the season.

“Obviously here in Port Stephens the quieter months for tourism are the colder months, and to have a whale watching season here is very

“I mean, there is no better place in the world to see whales.

“We have upwards of 30,000 whales going up the coast at the moment and whether you go out on one of the boats or you are on shore, there is no doubt that you are going to see something pretty special.

“Community groups have put in a lot of effort.

“I know in Boat Harbour there is a whale watching spot there or you can go to Birubi… you can go almost anywhere and see some whales out there playing in the ocean which is great.

“I think we are truly or we are going to claim that we are the whale watching capital of Australia,” he said.

Mayor Palmer embraced the concept of the new whaling - shooting them with a cameraand hopes that everyone enjoys watching the whales going up the coast and coming back later in the year.

A SICKENING incident in an Irrawang High School classroom has left a local mum terrified to allow her twelve-year-old daughter to return to school.

On Wednesday 24 May at around 1:30pm Bianca’s daughter made her way to her religion classroom.

After getting her name marked off, Bianca’s daughter allegedly attempted to leave the room to attend the library, before finding her exit

“She went and sat down in the classroom and then six to eight older kids who didn't belong to that class entered the classroom and overwhelmed the teacher,” Bianca said.

As the teacher attempted to gain control of his classroom, the incident began.

In a video shared by students on social media, a student aged fourteen or fifteen can be seen approaching Bianca’s daughter at her desk,

repeatedly asking ‘why are you calling me a pig?’ in a raised voice, before the camera pans away as the classroom teacher attempts to shepherd students filming the incident out of the room.

The camera then pans back around to capture the older student on top of Bianca’s daughter on the floor of the classroom, appearing to land a sustained flurry of punches to the younger student’s head and torso.

“You can see the student sitting on my daughter’s chest, punching into her face,” Bianca said.

“My daughter approximates that she was punched around 20 times in the face.”

The teacher can then be seen on video lifting the older student from the altercation, who is then pictured leaving the room laughing.

Bianca said she was appalled by the viciousness of the attack, but equally shocked at the school’s response to the incident.

“After the assault, my daughter was left begging for ice in the classroom,” Bianca said.

“She was the only one assaulted in this scenario, so I don’t know why she wasn't a priority.”

After being taken to the office to receive ice, a statement was taken by school staff and Bianca’s daughter was promptly sent home on the school bus.

Bianca believes the school failed in their duty of care to provide appropriate first aid.

“Because she took 20 blows to the face, my critique of the school is that it is a

potential head injury.

“It should have been treated as a head injury.

“She was at risk of concussion for at least four hours, but they stuck her on a bus home straight away.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said, “First aid and wellbeing support were provided after the incident.

“The student chose to take a bus home.

“The student’s wellbeing was, and remains, the school’s priority.”

Bianca told News Of The Area that she wasn’t notified of the incident until after her daughter returned home from school.

“The first I heard about it was when she arrived home stressed and injured.

“Her older sister called me distressed at the state of her sister.”

Bianca then attempted to call Irrawang, however the phones were off as the school day had ended.

She then called the Police and the Department of Education.

The Department advised Bianca that they needed to let the school’s investigation run its course.

One of the School’s Deputy Principals then contacted Bianca later that afternoon, advising that the situation was under investigation.

Bianca then received a no-reply email on Thursday from the Deputy Principal, who claimed that the incident had been investigated and had been “dealt with under the Department's Behaviour Policy”.

The Deputy Principal described the incident as “unacceptable” and said the school was taking it “very seriously”.

Bianca said this email “did not address any of the key issues”.

“I think the whole incident wasn’t handled well," she said.

“My husband was on war exercise with the RAAF and had to be brought home because of the stress our family was under.

“We made the decision to turn up at the school on the Friday to address our concerns.

“We were taken in for a meeting with the school principal, who admitted openly to the failings of not rendering correct first aid for a head injury, putting our daughter at risk on the bus, even the failures that occurred in the lead up to the incident.”

Bianca’s daughter was involved in a separate altercation with a student from the same year in March, and said she had experienced threats of violence since that incident.

“These last few weeks she hasn’t wanted to go to school due to the continual threats she was experiencing,” Bianca said.

With concerns for her daughter’s welfare, Bianca approached the school the week prior to the recent

classroom incident to discuss the issues.

“I was concerned about how much my daughter was being bullied and threatened in the classroom by some of the kids involved in the assault and asked for her to be moved class.

“There were failings in the lead up, and failings on the day.

“The school admitted to those failings and mistakes, but it feels like lip service.”

In the wake of the incident, Bianca said she can’t “in good conscience” return her daughter to the school.

“Because of privacy issues, they can’t tell us whether the girl who committed the assault will be returning to school.”

Following further discussions with local police, Bianca said she was told that police generally do not charge students for fights that occur at school.

“This wasn’t your typical school fight, and I don’t think we should be accepting violence in schools,” she said.

“This was a planned and premeditated assault on a younger child with their teacher present.

“If our children aren’t safe at school with their teacher present, what hope has any parent got?”

The filming and sharing of the incident also raises questions as to the effectiveness of the school’s no-phone policy.

Irrawang High School policy is that student mobile phones are placed in Yondr pouches during school hours.

“They introduced a no phone policy and Yondr

pouches this year,” Bianca said.

Mum calls for policy changes after violent Irrawang High incident

“The no phone policy is not working.”

With her daughter’s future at the school now in doubt, Bianca is hoping the incident will lead to broad policy changes at Irrawang and the Department of Education.

“For me as a parent, the entire process has been really frustrating.

“You have this picture in your head that if this sort of incident occurred, this is how it should go.

“The lack of communication and lack of response has been really disheartening and stressful.

“I don’t want another parent to go through what we have.

“I want the school to change their processes in how they respond to a critical incident.

“I also want their response to violence and bullying to change.

“A kid should be able to attend their zoned school and be safe.”

In relation to the incident, the Department of Education told News Of The Area that “appropriate disciplinary action” has been taken, including educational support as deemed necessary.

Irrawang High School is reviewing parent communication and other processes to see where improvements can be made.

The school is reportedly working to establish safeguards and other measures for the student's return.

Irrawang High School was approached for comment.

Local groups share in funding to connect community to culture

FIVE local community groups will share in $26,712 under Port Stephens Council’s Aboriginal Projects Grants to empower the Indigenous community.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said successful projects range from connecting children to country, the creation of digital resources and keeping culture alive through song, dance, art and products.

“Council enjoys a strong relationship with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, collaborating on a range of projects which promote understanding of Aboriginal culture and celebrates their contribution to our community,” Mayor Palmer said.

“In 2002, we established The Aboriginal Projects Fund on the recommendation of our Aboriginal Strategic Committee, which has been a huge success.

“We’re proud to support community groups and schools through the Aboriginal Projects Fund to continue to empower the Aboriginal community in Port Stephens through the delivery of programs, events and other activities.

“I can't wait to see these 5 projects come to life thanks to the vision of these organisations,” he added.

Program, engaging Sarah Corrigan from Rainbow Crow to run sessions focusing on connecting children to Country through movement, stories and walks.

Salamander Childcare Centre Director Daniel Freeman said that by having Sarah at the centre, they’ve enhanced their curriculum.

“This program is helping to embed Aboriginal perspectives into the learning projects the children are already undertaking.

“Sarah uses the children’s interests to help to create authentic opportunities to learn about culture in context, widening our perspectives and practices, closing the gap and working towards reconciliation.

“It’s important for us that cultural education isn’t presented through only structured group times that take them away from the context of what they do best, which is play.

Maritime community rallies around Milanja family

THE maritime and greater community of Port Stephens have rallied around the Milanja family as their much-loved fishing trawler and livelihood, the Kendon B, had to be recovered from D’Albora Marina last Tuesday.

The vessel sank on its mooring on Friday 19 May which came as a double blow to the Milanja’s as Miro, owner and operator of the Kendon B, has recently been discharged from hospital battling serious health issues.

Mark Milanja, eldest son of Miro, has been on hand with his brothers Mitch and Matt assisting local authorities and salvage teams around the clock since the trawler first sank.

“It’s been a rough trot recently with dad in hospital and we were all finally getting back on our feet putting some work into the Kendon,” said Mark.

“We’re running on fumes with little sleep at the moment working with local and regional crews in an attempt to save our trawler.”

Dustin Besse, Director of Sea Marine and Diving Services, headed up operations to salvage the vessel and said that due to the size and scale it needed to be floated from its mooring and lifted by crane at the co-op wharf.

“The trawler is estimated to be between 60 to 70 tons and lifting it from its mooring wasn’t an option,” said Mr Besse.

“Our crews floated the Kendon from the bottom of the marina and then towed it across to the co-op wharf where it’s being lifted by a

www.newsofthearea.com.au

recovery crane.

“The crane can carry payloads of up to 100 tons and once lifted we’ll airbag the Kendon so Mark and the family can begin to pump it out and hopefully recover as much as they can.”

Mark said the support from the local community has been overwhelming and

that they hoped to get the Kendon B back into working condition over the next few weeks in order to make the difficult decision to sell.

“We really have to thank all the local maritime authorities and the incredible support that’s been shown to our family over the last couple of weeks,” said Mark.

“The crew from the Moonshadow and Nelson Bay Boat Hire have gone above and beyond as well as Barry Gamer, Ken Banney and James White.”

There is currently a Go Fund Me set up to assist the family through this difficult time.

Head to www.gofundme. com/f/sinking-of-thekendon-b-please-supportmiro, with any amount going a long way

q Salvage crews from Port Stephens and the Hunter have worked tirelessly with the Milanja family to recover the Kendon B.

Lions support Koala Hospital

THE koala population in Port Stephens is on the brink of being lost in the wild by 2050.

If we are to continue to see koalas living in their natural habitat, the work of the staff and volunteers at the Port Stephens Koala Hospital must continue.

Recognising the need to support that work, the Soldier Point Lions Club recently presented Koala Hospital President Ron Land with a donation of $1000 before taking a tour of the facility.

Sharon Blunt of the Soldiers Point Lions Club told News Of The Area, “Our Lions work hard for our community, each barbeque we hold raises money which goes directly towards projects

for our community.

“The Soldiers Point Lions Club provided a barbeque at the opening of the new Harvey Norman Centre and it is the proceeds from this barbeque and a kind donation from Harvey Norman to our Club which has enabled us to provide this $1000 donation to our local Koala Hospital.”

The donated funds will help cover the operational costs of the Koala Hospital.

“The Koala Hospital does an outstanding job to protect and heal our native wildlife and our Lions Club were privileged to be able to assist in the valuable work,” she said.

If you would like to be a part of an organisation that makes a difference within your community, consider joining the team at the Soldiers Point Lions Club.

Whale replica named after environmental advocate Paul Watson

THE Port’s replica ‘baby whale’ has finally been named ‘Watson’ in honour of environmental advocate Paul Watson.

Watson is around the size of a five year old humpback whale, with a fully grown humpback around twice the size of the replica.

Watson the whale was donated by Gowings many years ago, who at the time were donating funds to the International Fund For Animal Welfare, assisting in

a plan to stop whaling during Imagine Cruises founder Frank Future’s time with Greenpeace.

Thankfully the humpback whale population is now in recovery.

“There are not too many good news stories about the environment but the stopping of whaling that happened on the east coast in around 1999 was a really good thing for our economy,” Mr Future told News Of The Area.

There are now around 40,000 humpbacks travelling along our coast.

At the Econetwork Sustainable Futures Festival, many children suggested that the whale needed a name.

Plenty of names were put forward for the whale by both young and old.

People arriving in Port Stephens see the white whale affectionately known as Miggy (also donated to Frank by Greenpeace) for Migaloo the white whale - now they see Watson too.

“Paul Watson is one of the founders of Greenpeace and is associated with Sea Shepherd,” Mr Future said.

“If any man has helped stop whaling it is Paul Watson.

“Given that he was recently deposed from the second environmental company that he set up because he was a bit extreme, they call it.

“He only sank four Icelandic whaling ships.

“We thought that we should call our little black whale ‘Watson’ after Paul Watson,” he said.

Other submissions for the name included ‘Willy’.

Construction starts on new NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service office and depot

THE NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Worimi Conservation Lands Board of Management have broken ground on a new NPWS office and depot in Anna Bay.

NPWS Hunter Central Coast Director Kylie Yeend said a groundbreaking ceremony was held on Monday with Worimi elders, members of the Worimi Conservation Lands Board of Management and NPWS staff.

“On Monday, Uncle Neville Lilley gave a Welcome to Country and a traditional smoking ceremony was led by Worimi Aboriginal owners to cleanse the site and bless the new construction project,”

said Ms Yeend.

“We’re so excited to have broken ground on our new office which will bring up to 40 local Hunter Coast NPWS staff together on the same site for the first time.

“We have more than 20 national parks and conservation areas across the Hunter coast area.

“As our team has expanded to care for these areas, we’ve outgrown our current leased office space in Nelson Bay and works depot in Boat Harbour.

“Having our team together on the same site will enable us to better protect and manage the precious environments that make the Hunter Coast region so special,” said Ms Yeend.

Chair of the Board of Management for the Worimi Conservation Lands, Jamie Tarrant highlighted the value of the jointly funded project.

“The site of the new build is part of the Worimi Conservation Lands (WCL) which is an Aboriginal-owned park co-managed by the Worimi Conservation Lands Board and NPWS,” said Mr Tarrant.

“The office will also provide a meeting place for the Worimi Conservation Lands Board and will allow for better communication and strengthen the comanagement relationship between NPWS and the WCL

Board,” said Mr Tarrant.

While the new single-story office and two-story works depot at 4154 Nelson Bay Road will have a public reception area, it will not function as a visitor centre.

As required under planning legislation, a review of environmental factors was completed to ensure the project is environmentally sustainable.

An Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit was also issued following extensive on-site investigations by Registered Aboriginal Parties. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2024, weather permitting.

Book giveaway winner receives prize

PEGGY Stranksy, the winner of NOTA’s April Book Giveaway promotion, has finally had the chance to connect with local authors Kim Rigby and Chrissy Hampton.

The promotion was run in an April edition of News Of The Area, and invited submissions for either a children’s story pitch or a setting for a teen fantasy novel.

Ms Stransky - a resident of Nelson Bay - won the giveaway with her wonderful idea for a children’s book set in South America.

On Thursday 1 June Peggy was invited to meet authors

Kim and Chrissy face-to-face.

The ladies quickly established rapport with each other and spent an hour or so sharing stories about their life experiences, discussing the process and craft of writing and talking about the

possibilities that arise when people ‘find their voice’.

Kim and Chrissy then made their presentations to Peggy, awarding her copies of their self-published books and

signing them.

Peggy was most grateful for the books, saying, “I’m very much looking forward to sharing these with my great-grandchildren.”

“One-Stop Medical Shop” opens in Medowie

THE Peppertree GP Medical Centre has opened its doors in Medowie, and if their launch day celebrations are any indication they will find

no shortage of patients in the coming weeks.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer was on hand to cut the ribbon at Peppertree GP’s Grand Opening on Thursday 1 June.

Following the ceremony Mr Palmer reflected on the sizable turnout of health

professionals, neighbouring businesses and prospective clients.

“It shows how much this clinic will be appreciated by the people in Medowie.

“When you’re seeing places in regional NSW where clinics are closing their books or withdrawing services,

something like this opening is just fantastic.

“The population here is well over 10000 and growing, so for Dr Mohammed and Dr Rohan to make an investment in this area… we know they’re going to be successful.”

At the event was Port Stephens Councillor Leah Anderson, who was also representing the Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington.

“I think this is such a welcome opportunity to the Medowie area,” said Cr Anderson.

“These guys have already signed up 380 people as new clients.

“I think it’s a well needed service that will benefit not just Medowie but the wider community as well.”

The clinic has opened following a lengthy process of development in partnership with the neighbouring Chemist Outlet pharmacy.

Pharmacist Michael Redpath and partners had committed to opening in

Seaham Public School student Tarniah Butler was recognised for being a wonderful school citizen.

She recently supported kindergarten students by using her technology skills during their literacy lesson; resulting in happy students and a wonderful published work.

Karuah Public School student Leiana Manton was nominated for showing pride in her community by helping to clean the local netball courts, making it safe for others to use.

The NOTA congratulates all of this week’s PBL nominees.

Fortunately Dr Mohammed Mohammed and business partner Dr Rohan Dissanyake saw a valuable opportunity to build a vital service in a growing area.

“We really wanted to do a service to the community and build up a small business,” said Dr Rohan.

Through the Window exhibition

THE Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is running an exhibition that will not only keep you warm in winter but will also stimulate your mind.

On display until 27 June is the ‘Through the Window’ exhibition, which explores the world beyond the pane of glass.

“This is a thoughtprovoking exploration of the theme of the window,” Meryl Miller from the Arts Centre told News Of The Area.

“The artwork in the

exhibition invites viewers to think about the window as a portal to another world, a place of beauty and wonder, and a space for reflection and contemplation.”

Also on exhibition is a showcase of the Spinning and Weaving Group who practise the art of textile making.

“We invite people to visit the display of beautiful work that can be created from the variety of textiles from natural fibres, such as wool, cotton, and silk.

“There are plenty of cosy items for winter - with a good

Feature Artist on display at Arts Centre

EACH month the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre has a feature artist exhibition.

This month that artist is Jenny Dobbie and in a relatively new program for the centre there is also a feature card maker on display, Caron Baker.

For Jenny Dobbie the creative arts have always been intertwined with her life and career in teaching.

Her creativity has followed pathways in visual arts, textiles and creative writing.

Jenny has also co-authored many school musicals and is a published author of children’s books.

Her inspiration for subject matter comes not only from nature, but also from the impact of light and colour on a form.

This has recently led her to embrace built environments in her work.

Her style has become more painterly and impressionistic as she strives to represent in her work the feelings and mood that her subject matter evokes.

Jenny regularly exhibits at Port Stephens Community Arts Centre and has sold her work within Australia as well as overseas.

This year, at the 15th Port Stephens Art Prize, Jenny received a Highly Commended Award for her work, ‘Budgies’, and the People’s Choice Award for her piece entitled ‘Family Portrait’ which is on display on Jenny’s Featured Artist Wall.

Caron Baker is the centre’s feature card maker and has been making things ever since she was a little girl.

She started off making jewellery and shell

selection of warm woollen beanies and some interesting wraps, cowls and scarves,” she said.

All of the knitted items are lovingly made using hand spun and often hand dyed natural fibres.

There is an excellent selection of woven scarves made with man-made natural fibres such as tencel; a regenerated cellulose.

belts to sell at the markets. Caron is retired now and living full time in the Bay. Her mantra is “use what you have”.

Caron’s cards feature a unique bohemian recycled junk style; using lace, ribbons, painted and printed papers, feathers, grasses, and even seed pods.

Meryl Miller of the Arts Centre told News Of The Area,

“The card making group meets on Thursdays in the Westralia room from 12.00pm.

“They make many different types of cards using new and recycled materials.

“If you would like to join, come along and bring some lunch, cards, card stock, glue, scissors and any other bits and pieces you think might be useful.

“There are cards for all

occasions within the Gallery with visitors to the gallery proving that multi-dimensional cards are extremely popular,” she said.

Card making is a wonderful way to explore creating art on a smaller scale and sharing ideas and learning skills from other card makers is a great way to embrace your creative spirit.

Karuah Titans top Taekwondo Championship

MASTERS from Karuah’s Titan Martial Arts have taken out one of the largest taekwondo events in Australia, from 22-23 April.

Held in Melbourne, the 3rd Global international Open Taekwondo Championships/United ITF Australian Titles brought together over 40 different schools Australia-wide, with international contingents from countries like New Zealand and Nepal also competing.

In an Olympic-style medal tally, Titan Martial Arts, which featured fighters from its schools in Karuah, Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay and Seaham, placed first overall, with ten gold, six silver and four bronze medals, and a grand total of 46 points at the top of the ladder.

Among the top medal winners were Elektra Mills, who won Gold for Adult Team Patterns, Silver for Patterns and Bronze for Sparring.

Cathryn Page, Titan’s Karuah

Branch Manager, won two Gold medals, for Adult Women’s Sparring and Adult Teams Pattern.

As a result of the team’s success, Coach/Chief instructor Michael Omay was inducted into the International Taekwondo Federation Hall of Fame by Master Michael Muleta.

“Taekwondo is my passion, it makes me feel like who I really am,” Cathryn Page, who has more than fifteen years of martial arts and holds a first degree black-belt, told News Of The Area.

“It is such an enlightening experience, meeting likeminded people, you share a passion, learn what you are made of,” Ms Page described the event, adding, “I would encourage anyone to give it a go.”

Ms Page has also trained in the arts at Bulahdelah, and the school has classes across the region, including Minmi and Anna Bay.

DEAR Jasminda,

When washing my 18-year-old and 20-year-old's clothes, I frequently come across other items that neither own. These items have been left at our place by their friends. Last week I did eight loads of washing, which seems ridiculous. How can I encourage these kids to take their clothes with them?

Tomaree Swim Challenge returns - Point2Pub 2023

THE Tomaree Triathlon Club is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of Point2Pub, the Port’s ultimate swim challenge of the year.

Building upon the resounding success of last year's inaugural edition, Point2Pub 2023 promises to deliver an exhilarating experience for swimmers of all levels and a celebration of community spirit.

Point2Pub will take place on Saturday 24 June starting at the stunning Soldiers Point jetty.

Swimmers will swim along Wanda beach and exit the water to cross the unique finish line in Bannisters’ Cheeky Dog bar.

This year's event offers participants two exciting competitive options: the Bannisters Point2Pub two kilometre open water swim and the McCauley ‘K’ one kilometre option.

Swimmers can choose the distance that suits their skill level and preference, providing a challenge for both seasoned competitors and newcomers to open water swimming.

Winners trophies and prize money are on offer for the first three male and female finishers in each race.

In addition, participants will

have the opportunity to win fantastic random draw sponsor prizes, and enjoy post-race camaraderie and celebrations in the Cheeky Dog.

New to Point2Pub this year is the addition of the special one kilometre event, the Trident Swim.

Swimmers who wish to participate with fins or snorkels can take part in this unique experience, albeit without division prizes.

"We are thrilled to bring back Point2Pub for another year," said Terry Withers, President, Tomaree Triathlon Club.

"This event is a testament to the dedication and passion of the Tomaree Tri Club within the Port community and the support of our great sponsors.

“It is not only a challenge but also an opportunity for local and visiting swimmers to come together, push their limits, and experience our fantastic local area."

Registration for Point2Pub 2023 is now open.

Participants can secure their spot by visiting our website at www. tomareetriclub.org.au and following the straightforward registration process.

Early registration is encouraged to guarantee participation and take advantage of discounted fees.

Dear Katherine,

Okay, there are a couple of problems here so let's deal with the most glaring one first. Why are you still washing your adult children's clothes?

In this privileged country, washing

clothes is as simple as adding them to a machine, taking them out when it beeps at you, and hanging them on the line.

It's not as though we have to handwash our clothes in a tub with a cake of soap and then wring them out before hanging them on tree limbs.

Clothes washing is a very simple task for your children, and one they will need to know when they leave home (which yours will never do because you've made life too easy for them).

The second problem relates to the first.

I have a strong suspicion that your children's friends have to wash their own clothes and so they are simply leaving items at your home, knowing that when they next visit, their jackets and jumpers and socks will be lovingly folded and smelling like jasmine because you've assumed ownership of a job that isn't your responsibility.

In future, wash your own clothes and put everyone else's in a basket and place it back in their room for them to deal with. They'll soon get the message and the washing will be reduced down to something more manageable, along with your blood pressure.

Forgotten years - Tamboi

By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE

Recorded history of the Tamboi site goes back to 1827 when the Australian Agricultural Company was granted one million acres around the Myall.

Part of that portion, including Tamboi, was returned to the Government during 1831.

In 1877 it was reported that Mr Dalton, owner of the steamboat ‘Waratah’, was working at Tamboi supervising dredging a channel designed to open up communication along the Myall River.

A 1911 Government booklet stated that “immense catches of fish are made on the lake by fishermen located at Tamboi…”.

It can be assumed that

Thankfully my frie

nd is keen on fishing and

unregulated settlement was likely to have begun by 1910.

The fishermen were not only concerned with the mullet, bream, flathead and luderick - they were very interested in the prawns that were bred there.

It was not until about 1920 that the fishermen began to unravel the peculiar habits of the prawns.

As prawns had emerged as a lucrative resource a system had to be devised that would give all fishermen a fair chance to catch their share.

The Tamboi ‘Prawn Sale’ was developed and became an institution.

It was conducted in the palm shaded setting of the ‘Tamboi Town Hall’ – an old fishing hut that was slightly larger than a country outhouse.

q A Myall prawners hut with a net hanging out to dry.

A week to remember

boating. Early in the week we took a trip up the Myall River with commercial fisherman Glyn ‘Glyno’ Tarrant to the historic prawning village of Tamboi.

What an experience.

Launching in Nelson Bay, on a perfect day, we motored across the port to Pindimar before travelling under the Singing Bridge to Tea

Gardens.

From Tea Gardens it’s about 30 to 40 minutes up the river to where the river empties into the Myall Lake system.

It is a trip that everyone should make.

The Myall River is famous for prawns that run out of the lakes into the river and are netted by

commercial fishermen.

We watched as a couple of cracker bream were bounced up onto the bank by one of the prawners who was having a fishing break.

In the afternoon I introduced my friend to ‘Stinkpot’, my 11foot tinny, which we launched off Fingal Beach before heading for

the shallow reefs off the Outer Light. In a bumpy sea we tossed unweighted yellowtail baits into the white water.

“Whammo!”.

Snapper to 6kg were keen to attack.

Hooking and landing the biggest fish of the day managed to overcome my friend’s nervousness at being in a little boat at sea.

A great day and a great week in Port Stephens.

Catholic Colleges squad

By Chris KARAS

Boom half back Charlie Jones is the latest prospect to burst on the scene with outstanding performances in the junior representative arena.

Jones, who captains the Roosters’ Under 15 Division 1 team, is one out of the box.

The skilful playmaker was recently selected in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges squad that will compete at the Australian Secondary Schools Under 15 Championships at Redcliffe from June 30 to July 7.

His Roosters’ coach Brendan Noyes told News Of The Area, “Charlie is a gifted player with a tremendous work ethic who is headed for bigger things.

“He is an inspirational leader and classic defender with vision, speed, great hands and a sound kicking game,” Noyes said.

“Several NRL clubs like South Sydney, Bulldogs and St George-Illawarra have already expressed an interest in signing Charlie who has the skill and desire to go a long way,” he added.

The talented Jones, a student at All Saints College Maitland, continues to thrive in the Roosters’ Advanced Player Development (APD) program.

He played his early junior football with East Maitland JRLFC before linking with the Roosters at the age of thirteen.

Charlie has caught the eye of keen judges this season with mature displays at schoolboy level and in the Newcastle Maitland Regional Junior League Under 15 Division 1 competition. The goalkicking half back has represented Maitland and is a rising number seven in the Newcastle Knights Under 15s Academy.

With the crafty Jones calling the shots, the well drilled Roosters are determined to force their way into the 2023 finals where they can test the likes of Kurri Kurri, Souths Newcastle, Scone and Valentine.

The Raymond Terrace colts are currently in fifth spot and should be bolstered by the return of injured key players in coming weeks.

q Talented Raymond Terrace Roosters playmaker Charlie Jones will represent NSW Combined Catholic Colleges at this year’s National Under 15s Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships at Redcliffe.

Mental Health Round at Medowie FC

MEDOWIE Football Club commemorated Northern NSW Football’s Mental Health Round from 2-4 June.

Mental health awareness footballs were provided to players from the Club’s junior teams while senior side captains wore

armbands signifying the round.

Medowie FC’s Steve Withey told News Of The Area the cause was one “close to my heart”.

“My family suffers from mental health issues and I have lost friends and work

colleagues also.

“It is always important to keep the lines of communication open when you are struggling.

“It's okay to not be okay.”

On Saturday afternoon, Medowie’s Zone League 2 sides welcomed Cooks Hill United to Yulong Oval.

The Cooks Hill reserve grade side, who have only been beaten once in 2023, proved too strong, coming away 2-0 winners with goals to Jake North and Harry Cook.

fillip for Hill, who is a promising back rower, prop or lock forward from the Raymond Terrace Roosters junior ranks.

Club President Craig Langdon told News Of The Area that the emergence of top Roosters prospects like Under 16 Division 1 skipper Hill, second rower Charles Barnes and NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Under 15 representative half back Charlie Jones was a

testament of the club’s thriving Development Program.

“They are just three of the elite juniors coming through our ranks at present with bright futures in the game,” enthused Langdon.

“All are products of our Advanced Player Development scheme that is reaping dividends in the Newcastle Maitland Regional Junior League competition,” he said.

“Beau is a talented forward and leader that forced his way into the NSW Country squad with strong performances in his age group,” Langdon added.

Hill caught the eye of Country selectors with his versatility as a forward and natural ball skills while representing the Newcastle Knights in the NSWRL Harold Matthews Cup competition.

The Roosters are also proud of the fact that nine of their local juniors have made impressive debuts this season for the Northern Hawks in the Newcastle Rugby League’s Denton Engineering Cup series.

They include dashing fullback Cody Handcock, centres Kiah Cooper and Dean Langdon, skilful lock Brandon Thompson, hooker Jack Langdon, second rowers Aaron Brydon and Kurt Langdon and teak-tough props Lachlan Williams and Caleb Langdon.

Despite Medowie’s strong start, the Newcastle-based side also came out on top in a hard fought first grade fixture, with a double to English import Alec Geelan and further goals to Brady Connell and Kingston Hasson.

Medowie will take plenty of positives from the fixture however, despite the 4-0 loss, creating plenty of chances in both halves.

Medowie will now prepare this week to take on Nelson Bay FC on Saturday 10 June at Tomaree.

Hunter plays host to State Senior Netball Championships

NELSON Bay and Port Stephens Netball Associations are gearing up for the HART State Senior Netball Championships to be staged in the Hunter region from June 10-12.

The three day tournament showcases the strength of grassroots netball with players from all over the State coming together to test their skills at an elite level.

This year’s Carnival will be cohosted by the Maitland District and Newcastle Netball Associations for Opens, 17Under and 15Under teams.

Port Stephens Netball Association President Jodi Cassar told News Of The Area, “The State Senior and Junior Titles were the pinnacle events for amateur netballers.

“The build up to the annual State Championships is immense with each Association fine-tuning their representative squads at various lead-in carnivals,” revealed Jodi.

“Our senior Port Stephens teams based at Raymond Terrace have fared well at various tournaments to date and are super keen to represent the region,” she added.

The State Seniors Titles brings together experienced and skilful

netballers with over 180 teams.

Historic Maitland District Netball Association – who celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2022 – will host hundreds of matches across the Opens Division 1 and 17Under and 15Under Divisions 1 and 2 at the revamped Maitland Park sporting precinct.

Opens Division 2, 17Under and 15Under Divisions 3 and 4 fixtures are scheduled to be played at Newcastle Association’s Netball courts at Union Street, Parkway Avenue and Smith Street.

Tim Fava, Executive General Manager of Community and Pathways at Netball NSW, said the Hunter netball community was looking forward to another Seniors State Titles event for participants and supporters.

“Maitland and the wider Hunter region is one of the most beautiful parts of Australia and I encourage everyone attending the Senior State Titles to make the most of their trip and experience everything it has to offer,” he said.

Nelson Bay Netball Association will send the following representative teams to the 2023 State Senior Titles:

OPENS: Sienna Burrows; Paige Welsh; Ashlee Hall; Lily Foster;

Alice Mitchell; Taylar Wilks; Emma Dawson; Corrine Hampshire; Fiona McGarth; Linda Jones; Head Coach: Amanda Wilks; Training Partners: Ella Jones, Georgia Duffield.

THE Fingal Bay Bombies game had to be abandoned 25 minutes into the first half at Fingal Oval against Kurri Kurri Bulldogs after a sickening collision that left several players in need of paramedic attention.

Young Bombie Dane Carney fired in for a strong leg tackle on an opposing Bulldog when he clashed with his knee and was left unconscious with fifteen minutes left in the opening stanza.

The impact also left two Kurri combatants in the trenches needing some scans and a couple of pilsner Panadols.

Young Carney later got the all clear from the hospital with precautionary scans revealing no damage.

It was a disappointing end to the match for the Bombies, who were in a strong position early after crossing the chalk four times in 20 minutes to lead 22 to 6.

Kane Chester grabbed a

double for the Bombies with Steve Whitehead and local cult hero Ben ‘Fat Jesus’ Schneider tunnelling over for a meat pie with extra sauce.

Co-captain and local Broncos media personality Bo Earl was pleased with the gameplay even though it was short lived.

“It’s hard to judge a match from 20 minutes of play but I thought we defended well and pinned the Bulldogs down in their end and capitalised on our opportunities in attack,” said Bo.

“Drew Watkins was solidly aggressive in defence and created chances in attack, setting Kane up for one of his tries.

“Ki McClelland also carried the ball well, eating up metres and has been training the house down!”

The game will be rescheduled for a later date with a break over the long weekend pencilled in.

Full credit to all teams and officials for ensuring the safety of players was paramount.

SUNDAY THE KINGDOM

SBS, 7.30pm

Marc Fennell gets personal in this eye-opening feature-length documentary. After Framed and Stuff the British Stole, the award-winning journalist, who possesses a knack for capturing both the dark and light side of difficult matters, delves into the controversial, far-reaching church of Hillsong. Fennell was a member of the mega church as a child; he shares his complicated and emotional story as he homes in on the organisation’s misdeeds and fall from grace. He chats to current and former believers, investigating what the future holds for Pentecostal religion and who will take Hillsong’s place, in the shadow of bullying, abuse and financial mismanagement.

MONDAY HAVE YOU BEEN PAYING ATTENTION?

TEN, 8.40pm

For the past decade, this lighthearted homegrown quiz show has been instrumental in shooing away those pesky Monday blues. A loose look at the events and news of the past week, it’s a reliable vehicle for panellists Ed Kavalee’s juvenile quips and Sam Pang’s caustic wit. Along with host Tom Gleisner (right) playing their good-natured punching bag, the giggles are effortless and free flowing. Tonight, the team is joined by veteran funnyman Tony Martin ( D-Generation) and two rising stars of stand-up, the deadpan Emma Holland and nonchalant Alex Ward, to see who can press that buzzer with the right – or hilariously wrong – answer.

WEDNESDAY SO HELP ME TODD

TEN, 9.40pm

Starring a playful Mystic

dramedy errs on the side of eclectic. The fun premise sees Gay Harden play fastidious lawyer Margaret, who invites comical capers and eye-opening situations into her law firm when she hires her free-wheeling, laid-back son Todd (Skylar Astin, Pitch Perfect, above) as an in-house investigator. The mother-and-son dynamic is mined for laughs and the pair bounce pleasingly off each other. Blending murder mystery, legal drama and comedy and pathos, you can expect the unexpected. In tonight’s premiere, Margaret and Todd are estranged, but are forced to put their differences aside when a loved one goes missing.
