Raymond Terrace M1 extension gets the go ahead
By Marian SAMPSON
IT’s the bottleneck we all hate to get stuck in and the bane of travellers every school holiday period.
The M1 ends and traffic snakes along an inadequate road beside the Hunter River.
Now one of the Hunter region’s biggest ever infrastructure projects is a step closer to construction with the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace given the official green light by the Australian and NSW governments. The Australian Government has approved the project under national environment law, meaning works can begin.

At Council’s 28 February meeting councillors voted to allow the project to proceed, which has been paused several times over many years due to design issues.
Councillors Anderson, Wells and Kafer voted to deny the DA, with councillors Bailey, Tucker and Mayor Ryan Palmer voting to approve.

then saw the development approved.
Councillors Arnott and Francis abstained from voting on the item after declaring a significant nonpecuniary conflict of interest
relating to comments that the development proponent had made in local media.
Roz Armstrong, President of the Soldiers Point Community Group (SPCG), who used Public Access on Tuesday night to object to Council approving a height variation for a DA on Soldiers Point Road, said that she was disappointed that the Church Street development was approved despite Councillors Anderson, Wells and Kafer voting against it.
“SPCG will continue to fight against developments in the area that are not compliant with the LEP as a matter of principle because the community had made it very clear on more than one occasion that they did not want this occurring,” Roz Armstrong told News Of The Area.
Community groups have consistently battled against developers in Nelson Bay and across the peninsula to keep height limits down.
Geoff Washington of the Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) said, “TRRA is very disappointed that, at the Council meeting on 28 February 2023, the DA for an ‘overheight’ 81-unit apartment building at 11-15 Church Street, Nelson Bay, was approved.
“While approval was recommended by Council staff, TRRA noted that the applicant had failed to comply with the Council’s request in September 2022 to reduce ‘the building height by one floor so the infraction against the building height limit is negligible’.
“In TRRA’s opinion it will, if built, significantly impact important views of the town centre and on Nelson Bay’s natural backdrop of wooded hills.
“TRRA fears that the approval will continue a pattern of variation approvals which will make it more difficult to enforce height and other limits in future and may also prejudice Council’s defence of its refusal of an only slightly greater height variation at 17-19 Yacaaba St, currently under appeal."

One Nation push back on offshore wind zone
WHEN the Albanese Government announced their intention last week to explore the possibility of a new offshore wind zone in the Pacific Ocean off the Hunter, Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen described the world’s climate emergency as “regional Australia’s jobs opportunity”.
Labor believes the proposed offshore wind area, off the coast of Newcastle and Port Stephens, will create thousands of jobs in related industries.
The Australian Government has set a target of net zero emissions by 2050 and is looking to reduce emissions by 43 percent, and by 2030 to have 82 percent of Australia’s electricity generated from renewable sources.
With the Government now seeking community feedback on the project, One Nation’s candidate for Port Stephens in the coming state election, Mark Watson, has been quick to voice his
displeasure.
A media statement released by Watson on Thursday outlined the One Nation position, describing the push towards renewable energy as a ‘pointless transition, given that Australia’s emissions are not large enough to impact on global surface temperatures’.
“NSW should be a global energy superpower with flourishing coal, gas and nuclear and even renewable power, this project off the coast of Port Stephens is the

wrong choice for our region,” he said.
“The conversion to a new electricity grid will cost tens of billions of dollars, now being paid for by taxpayers, households and businesses through their skyrocketing power bills.”
Mr Watson is also concerned about the visual impact of the proposed wind zone.
“So far, many I have spoken to in the community agree,” he said.
The area being considered begins at least 5.4 nautical miles (approximately ten kilometres) from shore.
Offshore wind turbines are the tallest renewable energy option being proposed in the area, with current heights of up to approximately 250m above sea level.
According to the Government’s proposal documents, the offshore wind turbines are likely to be visible from the shore.
Their visual effect will depend on their distance to the shore, and the location and number of approved projects and where they are viewed from.
The exact location of projects and number of turbines within the declared area is yet to be determined.
“I would not want to stand at the top of Tomaree Mountain looking at these in the distance.
For more information, and for details of upcoming public meetings to discuss the proposal, visit https://consult. dcceew.gov.au/oei-hunter.

Mr Watson instead believes the region should instead focus on preserving existing resources and manufacturing jobs.
“The last thing we need off the coasts of Newcastle and Port Stephens are 130 of these unreliable eyesores.

Raymond Terrace M1 extension gets the go ahead
FROM Page 1
funded, with the Australian Government contributing $1.68 billion and the NSW Government investing $420 million.
The project will deliver a 15-kilometre extension of the M1 Pacific Motorway from Black Hill to Raymond Terrace, including a 2.6-kilometre-long bridge over the New England Highway and Hunter River.
The surrounding network will also be upgraded, including the Hexham Straight Widening of around six kilometres of the Pacific Highway/Maitland Road to three lanes in each direction between the Newcastle Inner City Bypass at Sandgate and the New England Highway at
Hexham Bridge.
Once complete, the extension will create more efficient and reliable journeys by bypassing five sets of traffic lights, and removing about 25,000 vehicles a day from key congestion and merge points between Newcastle and Maitland.
This road will be a game changer for Port and Myall residents who commute to other areas for work.
The Australian and NSW governments have announced John Holland Gamuda Australia Joint Venture as the contractors for the southern section of the project, covering a 10-kilometre section extending from Black Hill to Tomago, while Seymour Whyte Constructions will
deliver the northern contract, completing the five-kilometre section that will bypass Heatherbrae.
The project is expected to be open to traffic in mid2028, weather permitting.
“This is an exciting step forward in this project, which is the last remaining bottleneck on the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane – and even better that it’s happened ahead of schedule,” Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said.
“I know Hunter locals who frequently travel between Maitland and Newcastle are very much looking forward to this extension, making for a safer and faster journey.
“I have been focused on this as a priority project since
my election seven years ago, and it’s great to be working alongside the Australian and NSW Governments to make it a reality.”
Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said, “The Australian Government is committed to working
with all state and territory governments to deliver a safe and efficient road network across the nation.
“The M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace will be a key link in this vital piece of the nation’s infrastructure.
“Demand on the road network in this area is only expected to increase as local
populations grow.
“We know that extending the M1 will provide improved traffic flow and increased connectivity.
“Getting the official tick to move forward is exciting news for the community as we continue to build the infrastructure that communities in regional NSW deserve.”
More than $13 million provided for Hunter road repairs
A TOTAL of $13,107,265 will be provided to improve three key Hunter region roads to better withstand natural disasters through the Regional Roads and Transport
Recovery Package, which is equally co-funded by the Commonwealth and NSW governments.
“In total three projects in the Hunter have been recommended for funding,
which will ensure the infrastructure will be rebuilt to a higher standard, making it more resilient to future disasters,” said Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin.
$5.15 million will go towards raising the road level of Nelson Bay Road between Frost Road and Gan Gan Road, and improving drainage to reduce the impact from
flooding.
$4 million has been pledged for the repair and upgrade of transverse drainage of the Pacific and New England Highways at Hexham.
Newcastle Council will receive $3,957,265 for the renewal of Old Maitland
Road at Hexham including shoulder construction on both sides.
Further information about the Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package, including the full list of successful projects, is available here at https:// nswroads.work/rrtr.

Meet the candidates in Tanilba Bay
THE Tilligerry Community Association (TCA) is holding a Meet the Candidates event on Thursday 9 March from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at the Tanilba Foreshore Hall, Tanilba Bay.
This is an opportunity for the community to hear from candidates from Labor, Liberals, Greens and One Nation in the Port Stephens electorate.
Candidates will address the below questions.
1. What is your political party’s platform?
2. How do your policies affect the Tilligerry Peninsula?
3. How will you work together with other parties in NSW Parliament?
4. What is the most
Redistribution of electoral districts comes into effect
important issue for you in this election?
Each candidate will have ten minutes to make their initial presentation.
“After the candidates have presented their initial presentation we open and invite questions from community members attending the meeting,” said Roger Hass, Tilligerry Community Association.
“Take this opportunity to get answers of concern to you and your community now.”
For further information please contact Fran Corner, President of the TCA at francorner@bigpond.com.
Address: Tanilba Foreshore Hall, 29 Tanilba Ave, Tanilba Bay opposite Tanilba Park.
NEW electoral district boundaries have come into effect for the electoral districts of Upper Hunter, Cessnock, Maitland, Myall Lakes and Port Stephens.
Changes made with the 2021 redistribution of NSW electoral districts will commence with the 2023 NSW State election.
The changes affect approximately 10,000 voters in the Hunter district and more than 770,000 people across NSW.
NSW Electoral Commissioner John Schmidt said where changes to electoral districts have been made, some voters would now be enrolled to vote in a different district even if their address had not changed.
“The NSW State election, on Saturday, 25 March 2023, will be the first election where the new districts come into effect.
“Some electoral districts have changed name, changed boundaries, been removed and split into other districts or been newly created.
“Voters can find out if their district has changed by using the ‘Find my electorate’ tool on our website.
“I encourage voters to go to elections.nsw.gov.au and check, and update if needed, your details on the electoral roll before 6pm on Monday, 6 March.
“The district you are enrolled in at that time is the district you are enrolled to vote in at the election.”
Mr Schmidt said changes to districts were needed as people move in and out of
electoral districts and in and out of New South Wales.
“The number of voters within each district should remain about the same across all districts.
“To ensure this, electoral boundaries are reviewed after every second State election and the boundaries changed, if necessary, to keep voter numbers at similar levels across all districts.”
Maps of all electoral districts and information about the 2021 redistribution of electoral districts are available on the NSW Electoral Commission website at https://elections. nsw.gov.au/redistribution/ about-redistribution/ overview.

MOTORFEST will be held for the first time in three years on 11 March, hosted by the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Motor Club Inc.
The annual event has been on hiatus since 2020, when government COVID restrictions were enacted.
Since its eight original members began the Motor Club in 2002, Motorfest has raised more than $100,000 for local community groups and services.
“Our main goals are to support the local community, allow them to get involved, and provide funds that contribute
to community groups, and we will continue our efforts in that area,” Club President Ross Anderson told NOTA.
Beneficiaries have included the Clinic Bus, the Surf Club, and the Rural Fire Brigade.
“Motorfest’s goal is to bring business into the town, and the event usually books out hotels and restaurants in the area,” Club Vice President Ranald MacKay added.
“We have invited over 160 other NSW Motor Clubs, and we are hoping for a great turnout of vintage, classic and custom cars,” said Mr MacKay.
The Club’s 50 committed members' cars must be over 30 years old, and still be of their original design.
The oldest car in the Club turns 100 this year.
On 11 March, visitors will be treated to a veritable assortment of much-loved and
working relics of Australia’s manufacturing past, including several legendary Fords and Holdens, as well as plenty of overseas models.
“It is a great social connection opportunity, as people can share their common interests, motoring knowledge and experiences,” said Mr Anderson.
Motorfest will allow locals and visitors alike to enjoy the glorious late-summer weather at Myall Park, Hawks Nest.
Motorfest starts in earnest at 10am, with an official opening from local State MP Kate Washington, and will run until 2pm.
You may see cars entering Myall Park from 8am.
Local business owners have donated prizes for the Monster Raffle, and there will be a BBQ, drinks and other refreshments on sale throughout the day.
Police have been told two men – aged eighteen and 24 –became involved in an argument before the younger man allegedly assaulted the older man, causing an injury to his eye.
The younger man has allegedly thrown a cattle x kelpie puppy against a wall causing serious injuries.
Eight-week-old ‘Dax’ was taken to a local vet for treatment for injuries including a broken leg, which had to be amputated.
Following inquiries, police arrested an eighteen-year-old man in Maitland about 7pm on Friday 3 March 2023.
He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV) and committing an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal.
The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Court on Saturday 4 March 2023.

Swan Bay home searched during commercial drug supply investigation
ON 15 DECEMBER 2022, Strike Force Wandarri detectives from NSW Police executed six search warrants at homes in Swan Bay, Terrigal, Gosford, Erina and Wamberal as part of an ongoing investigation into commercial drug supply on the Central Coast.
The Strike Force was established in May 2022 by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups Squad and Brisbane Water Police District to investigate the alleged
supply and manufacture of methylamphetamine in the Central Coast region.
During the course of the investigation, seven people have been arrested and charged with drug-related offences.
They all remain before the courts.
During the search warrants in December, police seized a number of items including
methylamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, drug paraphernalia, and mobile phones.
All items were seized for further forensic examination.
A 33-year-old man was arrested at a Terrigal home and charged with an unrelated matter.
Following further investigations, including forensic analysis of the items seized from the Terrigal home, the same man attended Gosford Police Station shortly after 9am on Wednesday 1 March 2023, where he was

Alliance of ocean users calls for end to land clearing
By Andrew VIVIAN
AN alliance of surfers, divers, recreational fishers and conservationists are calling for an end to land clearing in NSW, saying it too heavily impacts our coast and marine environment.
They say land clearing has increased thirteen-fold in NSW since 2016, when land clearing regulations were replaced with selfassessment codes.
The alliance has made a submission into the statutory review of the NSW Native Vegetation Codes currently underway and demands the review takes into account the impact of clearing on the water quality of our coastal waters and marine life.
James Sherwood is an Australian Marine Conservation Society Marine Parks Campaigner and North Coast-based surfer and diver.
“NSW’s self-assessment codes, which give landholders the power to decide whether they are following the rules, has led to mass land clearing, threatening our freshwater and marine ecosystems, vital systems that support both the health of humans and vulnerable marine life,” Mr Sherwood said.
“Land clearing often leads to more intensive farming practices that results in increased sediment and chemical runoff, which has a harmful effect on marine life.
“The proposed scope of the review is too narrow, missing an opportunity to explore the serious issue of poor water quality and the impact on our marine ecosystems.
“The review should be an opportunity to look at the impacts of land clearing on water quality and improve regulation.”
Dane Wilmot, president of the Bateman Bay-based Nature Coast Marine Group and a recreational fisher, said our waterways are important breeding sites for aquatic animals and flush out into our oceans and marine parks, and special refuges for NSW’s vulnerable
marine life and habitats.
“The millions of taxpayer funded dollars being spent on riparian
revegetation and on blue carbon is a waste of money as long as the land clearing laws are so lax that land clearing rates are soaring, rather than going down,” Mr Wilmot said.
Surfrider Foundation’s national campaign manager and North Coast-based surfer, Drew McPherson, said clean, natural, healthy flowing waterways are important for tourism, water security, and recreation, including for surfers, divers and swimmers.
“United, our alliance makes up the bulk of hundreds of thousands of members who are keen to see the government clean up our waters.
“Our group alone represents nine branches spanning the north and south coast of NSW,” Mr McPherson said.
Richard Nicholls, president of the Dive Industry Association of Australia and owner of Manly Dive Centre, said divers are concerned for the health of marine life.
“We also want to see an end to poor water quality, because runoff is bad for business.
“It muddies the water, creating bad visibility, impacting on our bottom line.”
Mr Nicholls said less people dive when the visibility is poor and it’s time to clean up our oceans for the future of human health and wellbeing, and the survival of vulnerable habitats and species, like seagrass and sea turtles.

Mayoral Scholarship Recipient - Alannah Horne
By Marian SAMPSON
THIS week News Of The Area continues to profile some of the amazing winners of the Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarship.
Alannah Horne was Dux of St Philip’s Christian College for each of her high school years, was School Captain in 2022, and came first in Advanced English, Biology, Chemistry, Drama, and Modern History.
Alannah is studying a Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle.
Alannah wants to not only deliver positive medical outcomes, she wants to change how women-centred and culturally sensitive healthcare is provided.
Alannah has a vision of progressive customised medical support for all individuals and plans to immerse herself into the local health care sphere.
Club Lemon Tree sponsored Alannah’s scholarship.
The Club is located on the Tilligerry Peninsula – it is a family focused club offering social activities, entertainment and connections
for local bowlers, boaties and fishermen. Club Lemon Tree sponsored two Mayoral Scholarships in 2023.
Mayoral Scholarship Recipient - Selman Hassan
By Marian SAMPSON
SELMAN Hassan graduated from Irrawang High School as Dux and School Captain, and has been rewarded for his diligent attitude with a 2023 Mayoral Academic Scholarship.
He is applying his scholarship funding towards his degree in a Bachelor of Aerospace Systems
Engineering (Honours) at the University of Newcastle. Obviously Selman has been a high achiever in the classroom, but he has balanced this with strong interest and participation in cricket and football, which he has played at representative level.
Selman’s passion for applied mathematics and science and a curiosity about flight and systems guided him towards his chosen
degree.
“I just think aerospace is a really cool industry to get into and it covers most of my interests.”
He is looking forward to the new experiences which university life will bring.
BAE Systems has funded Selman’s $2,000 scholarship.
The business is located in the Williamtown Airport precinct and is the nation's largest defence
company with more than 5,000 employees across Australia working on programs across land, sea, cyber and air domains.
In Port Stephens the company supports the global F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program, sustaining the aircraft and helping to train future pilots in the Royal Australian Airforce.
Director Andrew Chapman, who is responsible for overseeing these operations and expanding operations at Williamtown, presented Selman with his scholarship award.
He also spent the awards evening discussing programs and opportunities with the scholarship recipients.
Andrew Chapman of BAE Systems told News Of The Area, “We are on a massive growth vector in the aerospace industry both in defence and in the civil space - supporting opportunities like this actually creates that workforce of tomorrow.”
BAE currently employs 800 staff at the moment and will be looking at expanding this by around 400 in the next four years with most of these positions based at Williamtown.
Mayoral Scholarship Recipient - William Clark
By Marian SAMPSON
MAYORAL Academic Scholarship recipient William Clark was a school leader and a high achiever in both sports and academia at Hunter Valley Grammar School.
He believes that learning to concentrate and put in effort when those around you are not has been an important part of his success.
William is planning to study a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) at the University of Newcastle.
He aspires to work in the area of high performance vehicle engineering – ideally on the engineering team in Formula One racing.
“I am pretty proud to be receiving the scholarship, I’ve worked hard handling school and sport and I am excited and it is a good way to get started in the future,” William told News Of The Area.
He plans to stay in Port Stephens and commute to university four days per week for his studies.
For the next generation of students studying the HSC, William offered the following advice, “Do the work early in the term so you leave less for breaks, do it all over term one and two and even term four of Year 11 – get started early and study hard.”
William’s scholarship was funded by Tomago Aluminium.
Tomago Aluminium is Australia’s
largest aluminium smelter which has been in constant operation since 1983.
The company contributes $1.5 billion annually to the Australian economy of which $800 million is spent locally.
Guiliana Arnott, HR Advisor at Tomago Aluminium told News Of The Area, “For us it is important that
recently we have found that getting fresh voices and fresh eyes into the business has been very important, especially because we are trying to work towards decarbonisation.
“Getting new faces and new people into the business that has had environmentalism driven into them their whole lives is very important to us,” she said.

Dorin’s Draws
By Paul DORIN
Dear Jasminda,
I BOUGHT a puppy to keep my dog amused so I could work from home more easily, but instead it has created further chaos, with both of them play-brawling at all hours. Help.
Helena P.
Dear Helena,
WHILE reading your desperate cry for help I envisaged you trying to pick up 500 mauled cotton buds and the contents of a disemboweled teddy bear while your puppy ran between your legs before knocking over the side table (breaking a mug filled with cold tea because you haven't had a chance to drink it, let alone do any of your work, simultaneously saturating your warranty-void-due-towater-damage laptop).
OPINION
Questions on offshore wind turbines
DEAR News Of The Area,
I HAVE a few questions to ask about the proposed turbines.
Is this another uncosted blowout disaster like the NBN, NDIS and Snowy Hydro 2?
1) Where will the turbines be manufactured, by whom and at what cost per unit?
2) Where will the materials used be sourced and what do they consist of?
3) Who will build them and do they have expertise in this area of construction?
4) What foundations are needed and at what depth. Cost of construction?
5) How many turbines are proposed and will their placement disrupt the shipping lanes both along the coast and into Newcastle Harbour.
6) Will they disrupt sea life and the migration of whales?
7) What is the cost of cables from the turbines to shore?
8) What is the cost of maintenance of the total system?
9) What is the expected life of a turbine out at sea?
10) What are you going to do with the turbine when it finally expires?
11) Most importantly, what is the timeline to completion?
12) Will there be a penalty clause if construction passes an agreed completion date?
Have you considered that nuclear energy might be less expensive, more efficient, land based and connect into the existing poles and wires?
Kind regards, David BRUCE, Tea Gardens.
Over $20,000 raised at Pig Races
By Marian SAMPSON
IT isn’t everyday that you can enjoy the thrill of the races locally.
But recently the Anna Bay Tavern’s Pig Races and charity fundraiser gave the community just that opportunity. There were no jockeys in silks. There were no jockeys in silks, however there was still plenty of fun on offer, with the pig races hailed as a huge success.
The event raised funds for a
charity called Country Hope, with a local team entering annually in the Riverina Redneck Rally.
“Our pig race day at Anna Bay Tavern was a major success and we raised in excess of $20,000 from race day sponsors and money raised on the day after expenses.
“It was a great day all round,” he said.
“Last year as a rally we raised $568,000 and the local Port Stephens team ‘the Coasties’ have raised over
$80,000 in the four years we have been involved - now they can add to the tally,” Darren James from Anna Bay Tavern told News Of The Area.
It was a great family day with auctions, raffles, sweepstakes, 100 club, lucky dips and Hephner the Alpaca also making an appearance on the day to help out.
q
The funds will be split between BeyondBlue and Country Hope.
The Coasties are looking forward to this year’s Riverina Redneck Rally and they thank the community for turning out and making the day such a huge success.
People mistakenly buy pups because they see adorable puppy photos on social media, but the common denominator is that people photograph puppies when they are asleep (which is also the only time they stay still).
Puppies have the ability to morph from adorable fluffballs to Mephistopheles in a matter of seconds.
They can cause cyclonic levels of destruction with their razor-sharp puppy teeth, ravenous appetites and boundless energy.
Everything is fair game to a puppy, including you, Helena. As for your other dog, it has no doubt become collateral damage as they fight over your attention and battle for the position of top dog in the pack.
Now, Helena, I need to let you in on a secret that the puppy doesn't want you to know. You are the head of the pack, not the five-kilo Tasmanian devil you've let into your home, your heart and probably your bed. You need to set some parameters. Time out is an effective strategy on toddlers and it also works on dogs. Separate the dogs when they are becoming too chaotic, reward positive behaviour with kind words and treats, wear them out with a long morning walk, and remember that this too shall pass (in about four years).
Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Tennis stars take on Bruce Cup
THE Bruce Cup is a prestigious national schools tennis championship open to girls and boys aged twelve years and under.
It has been contested since 1938 and was first presented by Henry Adam ‘Harry’ Bruce, a former Queensland education minister and later an Australian Parliamentary representative.
Many Australian legends played their first representative matches for their state in the Bruce Cup, including Rod Laver, Lew Hoad and Fred Stolle and more recently Jason Stoltenberg, Pat Rafter, Todd Woodbridge, Mark Phillippoussis and Ash Barty just to name a few.
The zone trials for the championship were recently held in Raymond Terrace and flying the flag high for Port Stephens Junior Tennis were players from Foreshore Tennis.
“We are so proud to have achieved some awesome results from our junior tennis players,” James Bellette, Foreshore Tennis, told News Of The Area.
Boys first place went to Lockie Dashiell from Soldiers Point Primary School with second place awarded to Henry H, also from Soldiers Point Primary School.
Girls first place was awarded to Olivia McLoughlin from Tanilba Bay Public School with second place going to Mila M, also from Tanilba Bay.
“These amazing players are now off to contest the regional trials for a chance to represent the Hunter
region at the upcoming prestigious NSW PSSA State Primary Tennis Carnival,” Coach James Bellette said.

Tilligerry United FC to host six-a-side World Cup
By Chris KARAS

Eustacia Moores, the tireless Tilligerry United FC Female Participation Officer, told News Of The Area the tournament will see female teams of all ages represent a country of their choice.
“This provides the opportunity for players of all abilities in a celebration of Port Stephens’ cultural heritage.”
Mrs Moores said making the tournament accessible to the women of Port Stephens is key to Tilligerry United FC, who compete in the Northern NSW Newcastle Football League.
will be providing free childcare services to parents on the day.
“In providing childcare services we hope to cater to and reduce barriers for parents who have expressed interest in getting involved in the Tilligerry World Cup,” Mrs Moores said.
“We believe that this service will be a turning point in getting more mothers involved on a regular basis,” she explained.
“Over 200 players have registered to date and we have also invited futsal players and neighbouring clubs from Nelson Bay and Medowie to nominate teams,” said Eustacia, who served as both Secretary and Female Participation Officer in 2020 and 2021.
Tilligerry United FC will field Mixed Under 7, Under 9 and Under 11 junior categories for its inaugural World Cup as well as Under 13, Under 15s and All Age 2 divisions on the day.
“Importantly we will have staff operating our child minding service throughout the day which is a huge boost to parents,” Mrs Moores stated.
The Tilligerry World Cup is supported by the NSW Government under the Football Legacy Program, which invested $3.1 million into over 100 grassroots football projects to boost female player participation ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

FRIDAY ENDEAVOUR
ABC, 8.30pm
Detective Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans, pictured) still has plenty of loose ends to tie up as this Inspector Morse prequel series comes to a rapid close. In tonight’s penultimate episode of the final season, Endeavour suspects a connection between a woman’s disappearance and her past employer. However, a pressing missing persons case demands his attention as it involves a notable artist, whose work adorns the covers of a series of paperback mysteries. Regular viewers should enjoy some emotional moments as it’s also revealed how Morse came to be estranged from his crime-solving partner Fred Thursday (Roger Allam).

Based on H.E. Bates’s 1958 novel The Darling Buds of May, this cosy series set in a quaint Kent village is the perfect way to ease into a relaxing Saturday evening. Season two sees much-loved Ma and Pop Larkin (Joanna Scanlan and Bradley Walsh) at war with their posh new neighbours Pinkie and Cuthbert Jerebohm (Morgana Robinson and Julian Rhind Tutt, both pictured). Meanwhile, there’s a new romance on the horizon for Primrose (Lydia Page). Fans of the show will notice the Larkins’ eldest daughter Mariette looks very different this season –newcomer Joelle Rae has replaced Sabrina Bartlett in the role after the Bridgerton star abruptly left the series.

MONDAY THE 95TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS
SEVEN, 11am and 8.45pm
After last year’s infamous faceslap incident –Will Smith struck host Chris Rock, remember? –what will this year’s ceremony inadvertently serve up for viewers’ entertainment? Unsurprisingly, Rock isn’t hosting – and Smith will be absent, thanks to his 10-year ban. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel is taking the stage of Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre to emcee the extravaganza. All eyes will of course be on the actors’ lavish outfits, but Aussie Cate Blanchett (pictured) is up for Best Actress for the psychological thriller Tár, while Everything Everywhere All at Once is set to be the film on everyone’s lips, with 11 nominations.
