Remembrance Day 2017 By Heather SHARP FRAMED by Jacaranda trees, the Raymond Terrace Remembrance Day commemoration service for 2017 was attended by over 100 residents. Many former serving men and women were present, perhaps reflecting on their own years of service and those of their comrades. Once a vivid celebration of world peace, it has now arguably become a day more sombre than ANZAC Day in commemorating those who died serving their nation. The Raymond Terrace Remembrance Day Service organised by the President of the RSL sub-branch, Captain Victor Jones, RANR continued the tradition of a minute’s silence at 11am to commemorate the official time of the ceasefire of
hostilities on the Western Front. This important date in Australia’s remembrance calendar is commemorated by all the allied nations. Each year since the ceasefire in 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute’s silence is observed. The Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June, 1919 officially ending World War I. Captain Jones said, “The sacrifices Australians made in World War I remains one of our nation’s greatest modern tragedies, and few families of the time were untouched by its horror.” As Captain Jones reminded the audience, “Originally called Armistice Day, the commemoration was re-named Remembrance Day after the Second World War because ‘the war to

students working towards making their school the best place it can be for every student. Every year, we have our year six students volunteer their time at lunch and recess to be S.T.A.R leaders. They help the teachers on the playground by setting up a range of activities, and running games in all areas of the school. Year six particularly enjoy helping teach the infants students how to play soccer. This term, the Irrawang S.T.A.R leaders have been helping train the enthusiastic year 5 students to take their place in 2018.
Rachael Martin, Stage 3 Assistant Principal of Irrawang Public School told News Of The Area, “All year 5 students have been extremely professional in their training role, taking on feedback and going above and beyond for our school community.” “Irrawang Public School has been blessed with fantastic school leaders this year, with a year 6 class, a 5/6 class and two 4/5 classes that make up our Stage 3 team.” “Within these classes, we have so many diverse, wonderful students who love learning, not to mention being the best role models they can be for our younger students, they work hard every day!” “Stage three as a

Year six students are Irrawang are beginning to prepare for their next chapter as they start High School. Ms Martin said, “Our local high schools are so lucky to be gaining such a beautiful group of students.” “We will miss you dearly year six!” The program is very popular with students at the school. I will miss the teachers at Irrawang Public School because they care about us and they are so much fun.” Mackenzie from 6P said, “I will miss all the other students and the primary teachers, especially when they dance at assembly.” Jed from 6P said, “I have enjoyed being a S.T.A.R leader and helping out by visiting all the different areas in the playground.” A wonderful, positive program that encourages positive interaction between the ages at primary school.

After a prolonged stay at the Port Macquarie Koala hospital, Tolley has only just come back to Port Stephens and is now in his forever home, at the Port Stephens’ Koala Sanctuary. It is hoped that the Port Stephens’ Koala Sanctuary will allow our local volunteers to keep sick and injured koalas locally while they are cared for and for as many koalas as possible to be released back into the wild.

RURAL Romance ( Ru-Roms), those ‘Lust in the Dust’ novels that are very popular these days has a new writer in the form of Helen (Lena) West. The former teacher and member of Romance Writers Australia has just completed a self publishing course in Canberra. Ms West’s first novel, ‘Marrying Alan Morgan’ is ready to roll. “I came from a small rural town in Queensland and after retiring, travelled most of Australia for some eight years
with my husband,” she said. “On top of this we lived in western NSW for several years.” These experiences gave me inspiration for my books.” Ms West said, “I have completed four novels and have 10 more in the pipeline.” “I did all the format of ‘Marrying Alan Morgan’ myself which includes my website and cover design,” she said. “Lena West is my pen name and the book series is known as ‘Love in Oxley Crossing,’ she added.
WITH habitat destruction, vehicle strikes and dog attacks to deal with, life can be hard for Port Stephens koalas, however, the Port Stephens’ Koala Sanctuary could be one of the factors that has things looking up for the Ports’ favourite furry friends. Four rehabilitation pens have been opened at the facility, allowing for koalas to move from home care regimes into a purpose built care facility. Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “I would like to extend a big thank you to all the dedicated and committed volunteers who have made opening this stage of the facility possible.” Ms Washington believes that Port Stephens koalas are about to be listed as an endangered species. “It is the responsibility of the community to do all that we can to save Port Stephens koalas,” she said. The Port Stephens’ Koala Sanctuary was made possible through a $124,000 grant from the State Government Community Building Partnership which
was supported by Kate Washington. Port Stephens General Manager Wayne Wallis said, “It is our job to work together with the community, to ensure the viability of Port Stephens koalas for many generations to come.” Mr Wallis believes the facility when fully funded and developed has the potential not only to protect Port Stephens koalas but to create an international tourism drawcard for the region.
“What is here now is only the tip of the iceberg,” he said. Tolley is just one example of the koalas, who will stay at the sanctuary which is based within Treescapes at One Mile Beach which is situated on Crown Land. At 8-10 years old Tolley has been coming into the care of Port Stephens Koalas every summer since 2011, he lived in Mambo Wanda Wetlands and was usually found in distress and dehydrated on the cycleway. Tolley has been in care since last summer and was diagnosed through

The project, facilitated by CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) links STEM teachers with External Professional Partners in order to deliver a higher level of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) in innovative classrooms. Raymond Terrace Public School teacher Bernadette van de Wijgaart told News Of The Area, “This is an outstanding opportunity for educators to work together with external professional partners in delivering STEM opportunities to our students.” “I do believe that I have a classroom full of potential scientists and coding mathematicians, well equipped for the challenges of the changing job market, which is more automated and requires “thinkers” prepared to solve 21st Century problems and design solutions.” Scientist Natasha Egoroff

I’m starting to stress out about Christmas. The whole family is coming to our house for lunch. How can I ensure that the day goes smoothly and that I enjoy it as well? Mrs BB, Soldiers Point Dear Mrs BB, THE simple fact is you can’t ensure that it will go smoothly. When you put a group of people with the same genetic flaws in a confined space for seven hours and then you add alcoholic punch, estranged Uncle Phil, a Secret Santa where the maximum outlay is $50, Mariah Carey singing ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ and an undercooked turkey, you have a recipe for disaster. Add a faulty remote-control car, a drone that gets stuck in the jacaranda tree, bon bons that contain hazardous choking items, surly teenagers, a friendly game of table tennis that turns hostile, and granny falling into the pool after one too many shandies. How can you relax? How about we throw in a dog that urinates on the Christmas tree (and all the presents underneath), a dishwasher that groans under the pressure and dies, great grandad Maurice (who also groans under the pressure and dies), a maxed-out credit card and more landfill than anyone knows what to do with. I know a family who has this whole Christmas caper worked out. They put out an open invitation telling everyone they will be at the beach. If anyone want to come along, they simply need to turn up with their own chairs, their own grog, and a plate to share. Presents are banned. They sit around under a shady tree with zero stress, zero cost apart from the usual costs associated with a picnic, and, once lunch is over and the chicken bones are in the bin, they just loll around on inflatable toys. Smart, hey? Carpe diem, Jasminda
Kiwanis Corner at Irrawang Public By Rachael VAUGHAN

IRRAWANG Public School have a special new area in their school they have affectionately called ‘Kiwanis Corner’. This area was originally designed for children with special needs to use at any time of day and is now widely utilised as a space that any student can access at lunch or recess time. School Principal Stacy Mathieson told News Of The Area, “The name comes from the support we receive from a local charity call the Kiwanis Club of East Maitland.”
“Recently, the Kiwanis sent in a team of workers to revamp our sensory garden, which is one of the highlights of this space.” The Kiwanis Club also provide ongoing maintenance to this area, and have a number of new projects in the pipeline, including vegetable gardens, water tanks and additional storage. Saraha, a year 4 student says, “Kiwanis Corner is awesome because my friend’s come here and we play great games like what’s the time Mr. wolf?, duck, duck goose and I love playing shops in our toy

kitchen.” Mrs Mathieson said, “We hope to start using the vegetable patch next year as part of our cooking program that is run through the special education programs each week.” “Students that come to this area enjoy helping water and maintain the garden, playing games with the staff, and set up activities that are both fun and cater for all students from kindergarten up to Year 6.” “There are also two of our STAR leaders on duty, who are helpful Stage 3 students, to manage some of the activities and to ensure
equipment is put away safely at the end of each day.” School Learning and Support Officer, Toni Carroll said, “Kiwanis Corner has been a wonderful addition to our school playground as it gives a variety of students an alternative to the other busy playground areas.” “It has promoted friendship to a number of students who prefer a quieter form of play.” Kiwanis Corner has been a very successful playground alternative this year, and the school is looking forward to making it bigger and better next year.

By Rachael VAUGHAN RAYMOND Terrace skatepark enthusiasts are about to receive a much needed upgraded skatepark as part of Port Stephens Council’s Boomerang Park
revitalisation project. The opening is just in time for the Council’s inaugural ‘Illuminate Boomerang Park’ festival this weekend with lights shining brightly on the new skatepark to enable the public to safely use the new facility this Saturday night.
At a cost of $200,000, the new skatepark is part of the revitalisation of Boomerang Park which also includes the already completed new children’s play area, a new fitness course, the relocation of the Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed and the soon to be complete croquet and

pétanque courts. The skatepark has been designed to cater for all skill levels but to also entice those with advanced skating skills to utilise the new equipment. Port Stephens Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News of the Area, “Young people in Raymond Terrace have
been calling out for a decent skatepark for years and I’m pleased that we have finally delivered for them.” “People from all across the region and the state are already coming to this park to ride it and enjoy it, and as it gets more popular, the amount of visitors will grow.” “I’m looking forward to

working with the users of the skate park to improve it and keep it in tip top shape going into the future,” he said. The ‘Illuminate Boomerang Park’ festival will be held on Saturday 18 November and include assorted free activities, a lantern parade, glow room and will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display.
