The Learning Lab

RAYMOND TERRACE News Of The Area

Irrawang Public School has a long history of providing quality education that enables students to grow in confidence and experience success.

By Rachael VAUGHAN

IRRAWANG Public School has a long history of providing quality education that enables students to grow in confidence and experience success. In 2015, this commitment to student learning resulted in the formation of the Intervention Team. The Intervention Team is a group of staff members who help students improve in Literacy, Numeracy and social skills. They teach oneon-one, small group or whole class lessons that will support students in reaching their potential. Irrawang Public School’s Instructional Leader, Mrs Anna Swanson, leads the intervention team. Other team members this year have included Miss McEvoy, Ms Cowan, Mrs Pass, Miss Obernier and Mrs Kay.

q

Together, they form a dynamic team that works hard to support students. The Intervention Team can be found working in a customised learning space known as ‘The Learning Lab’, as named by Ms Cowan. The Learning Lab is a bright and colourful space that students enjoy coming to. Year 1 student Izaak said, “The Learning Lab is so awesome because it’s fun and I can read with Mrs Pass.” Currently, a number of different interventions take place in The Learning Lab. These include reading and writing lessons, numeracy lessons, a fine motor program and the school’s English as an Additional Language program. Jolly Friends, a phonics program, is the favourite of Kindergarten student Yasmina. She said, “I learn stuff

so that when I’m older I can write more words, and I like playing games and learning words with Mr Jones.” The Intervention Team is accessible to all students at Irrawang Public School. However, they focus on assisting Kindergarten to Year 3 to ensure students start school well. They choose students for interventions by talking with classroom teachers and looking at student achievement data. They identify students who have made limited progress and might need some extra support to reach their potential. If the intervention team selects a student, a note will be sent to parents and carers detailing the support the student will receive.

Australia has officially become the twenty sixth country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage.

AUSTRALIA has officially become the twenty sixth country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. On a historical day on Thursday last week, the House of Representatives passed the bill that has enabled same-sex couples to marry in Australia. The first legal same-sex marriages will take place in Australia from 9 January 2018 after Attorney-General George Brandis stated that couples had to give one month’s notice of their intention to marry. However, after GovernorGeneral Peter Cosgrove signed the bill into law on Friday, all existing marriages performed overseas will be recognised at midnight on Friday night. In a day full of drama, the lower house officially voted on the bill that had come about through the successful “yes” vote in the recent plebiscite where 61.6% of those who completed the survey, voted in favour of allowing same-sex marriage in Australia. The federal seat of Paterson, which encompasses most of the News of the Area’s geographical reach, had a stronger “yes” vote than the national rate with 65.5% and this was supported by federal member Meryl Swanson in the official vote in parliament on Thursday. In an unusually strong show of united support in the House of Representatives, only four members officially voted “no” while ten members, including exPrime Minister Tony Abbott, abstained from voting. In the end, the final vote

In scenes unseen before, the public gallery celebrated the historic moment by singing the chorus of The Seekers timeless classic “I Am Australian”. Simon Tarrant, a Paterson born and raised man, told News Of The Area, “This has been the toughest few months of my life and has taken an immeasurable toll on not only me, but my community.” “I was so happy when

the survey results were announced and then again when the legislation went through, but the main feeling was relief and exhaustion.” “I couldn’t match the energy of a lot of my community simply because of how much this has affected me.” “I’m looking forward to moving on in a more equal and just Australia where we can all enjoy a level playing field,” he said.

I BLAME this pressing problem on the DIY generation. Everything changed when reality TV came into our lives. Suddenly we are all experts in trades that should take many years of on-the-job training and accredited qualifications. Now, men and women of the suburbs reckon they can build a state-of-the-art cubby house in two hours with three pallets, a roll of hessian and a staple gun. It gets worse, of course. Every Jack and Jill from the Terrace to Bulahdelah thinks they can buy a run-down shack and ‘flip it’ in five weeks in order to gain a cool $200,00. Women are getting their hair cut into stylish bobs and they are feigning Canadian accents saying things like, “That paint really makes the room pop!” In the grand scheme of things, your mum’s foray into homemade Christmas decorations is pretty tame, though I do know how embarrassing it is when the guy at Bunnings asks your mum to produce identification because she’s buying up all the gold and silver spray cans like a cross between one of the local ‘boys in da hood’ and Glenda the good witch. The only other positive I can see is that the money she saves will be usefully redirected towards your Christmas gifts. Aaaargh . . . I just had a terrible thought. Maybe she is making those as well. Just imagine when you open your gifts this year. You’ll receive a crocheted IPhone case (how cool), a pair of bedazzled denim shorts (fashion disasters always return if you wait long enough), and maybe you’ll even score a fancy new piece of contemporary art constructed from melted down forks, welded coathangers and pieces of silver-sprayed fishing line (what’s not to love?). I hope you survive the festive season, Miss KN. I’ll be thinking of you while I pop a few rum balls. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Revamp for Terrace Central PROPERTY investment and management company, Panthera Property Group, has recently purchased the Terrace Central shopping centre in Raymond Terrace. The group plans to expand the centre’s retail offering and make improvements to the internal appearance of the shopping centre. The new owners are kicking off with a bang with a huge Christmas extravaganza in the week leading up to Christmas. Santa and Mrs Claus will be taking up residency in Santa’s Grotto located within one of the stores in the shopping centre. There will be daily Christmas craft activities, storytelling, face painting, singing and dancing and visits from Jingles the Elf, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman and others. All activities are free and will be taking place daily from the 18 December up until Christmas Eve from 9:30am until 12pm.

has been painting since a very young age, and has no plans to stop anytime soon. Her newest exhibit has been a long time in the making with many local artistic avenues taking up Florence’s time since her last exhibit. Florence has been involved in the Morpeth Teapot Festival for an impressive thirty years and became known as the ‘Teapot Lady’. She also taught painting for many years. Florence told News Of The Area, ”I’m excited to have this exhibition and get back into showing my work.” “I have been known for a long time as one of the leading artists in the painting of wildflowers, and I’m proud of this achievement.” “I’m excited to show my old followers who haven’t seen my new work, what I have been up to all this time,” she said. Ms Humphreys’ work are on exhibition at the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens.

q MAGICAL: Santa’s Grotto will take over one of the empty shopfronts from 18 December.

Chakyl Camal, CEO at Panthera Property Group, believes Terrace Central is a great investment for the Group. “The Terrace Central Shopping Centre is centrally located, has convenient parking and a lot of potential,” said Camal. “We’re currently planning ways we can introduce exciting new shops and also make visiting the Centre a more pleasant experience for the

community.” Panthera Property Group also recently purchased Maitland Riverside Plaza (formerly Hunter Mall) in Maitland and has since upgraded the property, introduced Aldi to the centre and started regular community events. “At Maitland Riverside Plaza we’ve seen huge success with school holiday events and family activities and will be looking to create

the same community atmosphere at Terrace Central,” said Camal. “We’re very excited to be taking over the centre at the busiest time of year and want to make it as magical for shoppers as possible,” Camal told Raymond Terrace News Of The Area.. “We’re interested in hearing what the community would like to see within the Shopping Centre so that we can make it a better place to shop.”

THE Lakeside community now has a new place to play, and the official opening of the new skate park located at 90 Benjamin Lee Drive, Raymond Terrace took place last week. The $130,000 skate park and reserve works were funded by the Federal Government’s Community Development Grant, the NSW Government’s Social Housing Community Improvement Fund and Port Stephens Council. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the new recreational area is a welcome addition to the community of Lakeside.

“With a new skate park, playground and hit wall, as well as new pathways throughout the park, it’s a great new space for the community of Lakeside to get active outdoors,” Mayor Palmer said. “This park has something for everyone – whether you’re a preschooler, in high school or beyond – it caters to all ages,” he said. “We couldn’t have done it without the help of the Federal and State governments, who have both invested $50,000 to help make this skate park a reality,” he said.

Brock Lamont, Council’s Community and Recreation Coordinator, says the skate park was designed by specialist contractors, who also constructed the Boomerang Park facility. “The skate park has been designed for beginners to intermediate users, and caters for boards, scooters and BMX riders with a quarter pipe, flat bank, roll over and rail to try,” Mr Lamont said. “It’s great see so many riders coming to tryout Raymond Terrace’s two new skateparks, and the feedback we’ve had has been really positive,” he said. the ladies have been busy creating and wrapping gifts for the ladies and gentlemen recipients of Meals on Wheels. day. The Fedz have had a lot of experience playing in the live music scene in Newcastle and Port Stephens over the past twelve years and are guaranteed to put on a toetapping show. The Fedz consist of three experienced musicians, James Body, Lead Vocal and bass guitar, David Rudder lead vocal and guitar, and John Shelton on drums and backing vocals. James Body started his musical career in the Australian Army playing all over the country as a piper in the Australian Army Pipes Band. On leaving the Army he took up the bass guitar. During the show he will be playing bass guitar, bagpipes, acoustic guitar and singing lead vocal. James is looking forward to the challenges of playing as a

three-piece band. David Rudder has been playing and performing music in the Newcastle Music scene on and off since about the age of 20 and is an experienced and powerful guitar player. David will be playing rhythm and lead guitar, bass guitar and singing lead vocal and backing vocals.

John Shelton just loves his music and is an extremely talented drummer, who was a founding member of the Covers Band 24 Hours before joining The Fedz. The Fedz are looking forward to playing the Spinning Wheel Hotel on Friday 15 December, get down and support the Spinning Wheel Hotel and their love for live music.

Celebrating Probus By Heather SHARP CELEBRATING the end of the year and a great deal of hard work, the Ladies Probus Club of Raymond Terrace held a Christmas party for all its members. Amongst the celebrations, was a special mention of Mrs Joyce Wood who turned 99 on 16 November, 2017. A World War I baby, Mrs Wood was born five days after the Armistice in November, 1918.

q

Mrs Wood, an affirmed Raymond Terrace local, lived all her married life in a house she built with her husband in 1940 near the Ki Ora homestead of her parents in law. She only recently moved into a nursing home, but prior to that she lived independently at home. The secret to her energetic longevity, Mrs Wood told News Of The Area, is, “I’ve never been one not to get involved and I’ve kept busy, you need to.”

“I’ve done meals on wheels, bowling, volunteered at the Church.” “Don’t sit down!” Family folklore has it that Mrs Wood’s name comes from a combination of the words Joy and Peace as she was born so soon after the end of World War I. Mr Giacomo Arnott, Port Stephens Councillor and representing Mrs Meryl Swanson MP at the lunch, told News Of The Area, “Community events like this are important to recognise

In total, seven Probus members celebrated turning over 90, including: June Blanche (94), Beth Osborn (90), Ruth Nicholas (91), Dulcie Newman (91), Mavis McLean (92), Marg Chapman (99), and Joyce Wood (99).
