a list of volunteers to be grateful for, after their recent plight was noticed, and the community rallied around them. The ‘Feather and Fur Small Animal Rescue’ group were at the centre of the rescue efforts to help the birds suffering from the algae outbreak caused by intense weather conditions at the pond that threatened their lives. This wonderful not for profit group put out a call to arms when they became aware of the situation, calling on anyone from the community willing to help them make a difference. Justine Mutton, from Feather and Fur, told News Of The Area, “We were blown away by the overwhelming support from the local community.” “We received numerous offers of assistance, which included

donation of feed, pickup and delivery of donated feeds and consumable items, donations of shell pools and an ICB water storage container, and cash donations for the replacement of hydration supplements.” “Even the the active sharing of our Facebook updates helped to raise awareness,” she said. Justine added, “The way everybody came together to help really shows how important this area is to the local community.” The volunteers spent many hours day and night, monitoring the health of the area’s inhabitants. They provided clean drinking water stations throughout the area and daily feeds containing hydration supplements, in order to reduce the amount of infected water consumed. They also recorded the deaths on-site, provided on-site medical treatment, and transported

compromised animals into care. The founder of the rescue group, Jacob Bullock, realised after volunteering consecutive years for the Native Animal Trust that there was a need for a targeted rescue service that was dedicated to domestic and exotic avian and small animal species, as these animals were generally overlooked by other services. Jacob told News Of The Area, “Currently our rescue operations and in-house care and rehabilitation are funded solely by our volunteers and donations of supplies from the public, so this environmental event was made so much easier by all the volunteers and donations we had.” News Of The Area is looking forward to following up with the rescue group and their passionate plans to campaign for a permanent solution for the normally picturesque Newline Road pond.

Gypsy Travels By Rachael VAUGHAN

IF you think you see a gypsy wagon during your travels around Port Stephens, you’re not seeing things that aren’t there. It is the real deal, and we have Heather Kilpatrick and the talented fella’s at Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed to thank for it. With gypsies being a part of Heather’s ancestral heritage, the realisation of a lifelong dream started a year ago when she visited a market and saw the members of the Men’s Shed selling raffle tickets. She walked over and asked the group a question that they had never been asked before. “Can you build me a gypsy wagon?”

“When I asked them, they initially thought I meant a little wooden toy one,” Heather told News Of The Area. “They were shocked when I told them I meant a full sized one that could fit into a box trailer.” With the Men’s Shed always up for a challenge, they accepted the brief. Twelve months later, Heather is now the proud owner of a custom built, fullsize gypsy wagon. “It was a real team effort from all the guys,” Men’s Shed President Robert Bull told News Of The Area. “All of our skill sets were tested whilst building the wagon, including design, metal, wood and painting, with the auto electrics proving to be the hardest

New school leaders for Irrawang Public School FROM Page 1 responsibilities and represent the school with pride at functions, both school related and externally.” “Staff have encouraged the leaders to build on their confidence and to take some initiative within their roles to make a difference,” he said. Mr McDonald said, “The leaders have settled in extremely well, and ran their first assembly on Monday.” “They showed confidence, and at all times have respected the Aussie 5 school values.” When the Year six leaders were asked if they were nervous they all replied “No” and when asked how they felt to be the leaders they all agreed they were proud and happy and thought it was amazing. School Captains, Lucy Shearer and Miles Brewer-Dunn said they were nervous before the assembly, but were fine once it started,

RAYMOND TERRACE News Of The Area component to get sorted.” “When we took it on, we didn’t realise just how big a job it was going to be, but we did it.” Heather plans to use the wagon at markets selling goods for her business ‘The Wooly Weavers’ including her beloved ‘rescue teds in fair isle threads’, yarn bombing and a bevy of other knitted and crocheted goods. Heather’s two dogs, Lou Lou and Kiki, have already signed up to be her travelling companions. If you have an idea that you think the Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed can help with, just do what Heather did and approach them with your idea. “We want to encourage the public to come in and challenge us.” Robert Bull told News Of The Area. “We love projects, and we want to give things a go.”

while Vice Captain, Nicholas HilzingerGeise said he didn’t feel nervous at all and enjoyed working with the other Leaders to run the assembly each week. While discussing what makes a good leader Vice Captain, Liliearna BuckshiramPing replied, “I think a good Leader is a person who is safe and responsible and shows respect to everyone, everywhere, every time.” Vice Captain, Kathlyn Stevens added, “It is important to do our jobs using Aussie 5 because we have to show other students the right way to behave and show the community that we have the best school.” Leo went on to say, “When we go to High School our new school will know we can be organised and responsible, and will think of us as leaders.” You can see these proud Leaders at special events at Irrawang Public School, running the Monday PBL assemblies or whenever Irrawang Public School is invited to Community events such as ANZAC Day.

Lions Youth of the Year By Heather SHARP THREE of the area’s best young people were contestants in the Zone finals for Lions Youth of the Year last Saturday. Hosted by the Raymond Terrace Lions Club, the contestants were put through a rigorous day of being interviewed by a panel of three judges, giving two impromptu speeches, and one prepared speech to a public audience. Each of the three local high school students participated to a high level. The contestants included: Jaydon Maidstone (Hunter River High), Alyssa McDonald (Hunter River High), and Jordan Tumes (Medowie Christian School). Youth Chair of the Raymond Terrace Lions Club and organiser of the event, Mrs Glenys Francis, told News Of The Area, “It is with a sense of pride that we support our local young people to progress to

community leaders.” “This competition has been running for 28 years in Australia and the Raymond Terrace Lions Club have participated since its inception.” “The winners from Raymond Terrace, Tea Gardens and Medowie Clubs competed in the Zone final on Saturday.” “It is a terrific opportunity for young people to showcase their personality, community leadership, and represent their community.” “We have always been proud of our young representatives and will do anything we can to support them.” “Each of the clubs will be sponsoring their contestants to attend a Youth Camp in April where they will meet other young achievers form all over the District.” Two contestants, Alyssa and Jordan were selected to go on to the Regional finals to be held in Clarencetown.

q The contestants, Jaydon Maidstone, Alyssa McDonald, Mrs Glenys Francis, Jordan Tumes and Mr John Mulhearn. Topics contestants spoke about ranged from personal experiences of growing up as a teenager in the new millennium to role models that inspire them to the meaning of black holes in

space. The audience were equally entertained, educated, and enthralled by the talents and community spirit of young people in the local community.

The Lions Youth of the Year competition is open to young people aged 15-19. Contestants are nominated through local Lions Clubs and focuses on developing in young

people: leadership, personal improvement, sportsmanship, citizenship, community involvement, and public speaking experiences.

Dear Mrs LQ, Oh, I hear you. There you are, standing in a public place, an audience in front of you, your heart pounding, your hands shaking, your face blushing. There are no doubt times when those symptoms could be desired – meeting a new partner, for instance. When it comes to speaking in front of a crowd, however, these are not desirable feelings, because they could be followed by an inability to speak, and then an inability to run from the stage and bury your head in the nearest potted palm because you are dying from humiliation. Instead, you stand there and continue ranting, knowing that the audience is not listening to your words, because they are too busy watching you tremble. The positive in all this is that the audience is not there to throw bananas at you, or laugh at your flaws, or scoff at your words, or judge your private life (unless you are Barnaby Joyce over the past few weeks). No, they are there because they want to hear what you have to say. There are some ways to calm down, which may be useful. Some people swear by the technique of imagining the audience members with no clothes on. I feel that this could only make you more nervous, so don’t try that one. Focusing on a friend in the audience is always a useful tactic. Ask a friend to sit near the front, so you can do this. Drinking beforehand is not a good idea. It may calm your nerves, but it may also slur your words. Deep breathing can assist, as long as you don’t go too far and hyperventilate. Rehearsing your speech in front of a small audience can also help to alleviate your anxiety, but the family dog won’t cut it. Best of luck, Mrs LQ. Given public speaking is often listed as the number one fear, take some solace from the fact that you are certainly not alone.

Carpe diem, Jasminda

Koalas Active over Summer By Gail & Ian MORPHETT

IN November we reported that spring had been a particularly active period for our local koalas. Well, they have been seen frequently in summer too. The Koala Group has had 53 sightings of koalas reported to us in November, December and January. An interesting phenomenon seems to be that they are hanging around close to the centre of Hawks Nest. We even had one being chased across the roundabout by a couple of Staffordshire Terriers (fortunately he got away). Most of our sightings have been around the “Magic

Square” or Mermaid/Ibis/Binda/Yamba Streets. Unfortunately, another trend is bothering us and we don’t really understand the causes. In the past year there have been five koalas hit by vehicles on the Pacific Highway in our area between Bulahdelah and Karuah. Sadly, four of them were killed instantly. However, a good news story was that one hit near the Viney Creek Road turnoff was rescued and taken in to care by an intrepid lady who stopped her car. Amazingly it recovered from its injuries

and was returned to koala-friendly bushland in Viney Creek Road well away from the highway. We have been monitoring koala activity in our area personally since 2003 and the Koala Group has since 1989. There have always been the occasional koala hits on the Highway but five in one year is unprecedented. In the past year we have had no koala rescues or reported deaths in town. Before the koala sign went in at the foot of the bridge we had four koala deaths in three years on Kingfisher Avenue. Since the sign was installed (May 2016) we have had none.

‘WE’RE ONE OF THOUSANDS OF BUSINESSES IN THE WORKFORCE BEHIND THE DEFENCE FORCE’ There are thousands of businesses in The Workforce Behind The Defence Force. And opportunities for more to get involved are growing by the day. Over the next decade, the Australian Government is investing $200 billion in our defence capability, and this will open the door to a number of Australian small businesses including those in technology, manufacturing, R&D, logistics, construction and IT.

MAGGIE Cunich has been collecting drink containers to ‘Return and Earn’ for four weeks and has pocketed more than $200 for her efforts. But earning the extra pocket money isn’t always easy for the 12-year-old, who piles a load of containers into her mother’s car each week with plans to redeem them through the nearest vending machine at Medowie. “Sometimes the machine is full and other times we only get a couple of containers in before it reaches capacity,” Maggie said. “We have had to drive to Mayfield, but that machine is often full as well, so we have ended up at Jesmond a couple of times.” Despite the machines being frustrating to use, Maggie said the incentive of earning some extra cash will encourage her to stick with it. Over 100 million drink containers have been returned across NSW for the 10cent refund since the scheme started on 1 December. But three months on, only 446 out the promised 800 vending machines are operational across the state.
