Nicole Dunn, Northern NSW Area Manager says she is extremely proud of the continued performance and achievement in all areas of aquatic safety. “The fact we have managed to have all three Port Stephens aquatic facilities achieve safety ratings well above the NSW three year

Brekkie Club initiative brings a smile to kids THE most important meal of the day is covered for the lucky learners at Irrawang Public School. Brekkie Club is available Monday through to Thursday mornings at 8.25am each day at the School. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride THE Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) sees Classic and Vintage style motorcycles across Australia and the world unite for prostate cancer and men’s mental health, supporting the Movember Foundation on Sunday 30 September 2018. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in Sydney, Australia by Mark Hawwa. It was inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a

classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the oftennegative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting niche motorcycle communities together. That first ride in 2012 brought together over 2,500 riders across 64 cities, and the success of the event encouraged the Founder to

consider how it could be used to support a worthy cause. Influenced by the tragedy of losing one of their ride hosts to depression, from 2016 the ride has had a change of focus in their fundraising goals, and now the funding of Men’s mental health programs is a Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride focus, in addition to prostate cancer

research. Local Gentleman Craig Ireland told News Of The Area, “I will don my finest attire with my fellow men and women across the globe to join the fight with The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride to raise awareness for prostate cancer and men’s mental health.” “But before I press my tweed, and polish my boots, I need you to donate what you can for this meaningful cause and help me reach my goal.” For your husbands, sons, uncles, your brothers, your fathers and friends, dig deep, and donate what you can, for their lives need not end. SEAN Scanlon, the CEO of the Diocese of MaitlandNewcastle, has announced that the Diocese is in the process of buying the Centre at Raymond Terrace which comprises a pre-school and an early education facility. “Our aim is to ensure childcare services now on offer will continue to be available to RAAF families at Williamtown and to other families in the Port Stephens area. “We will do this by operating the Centre under the St Nicholas Early Education banner from January 2019.” “Our aim is to ensure childcare services now on offer will continue to be available to RAAF families at Williamtown and to other families in the Port Stephens area. “We will do this by

operating the Centre under the St Nicholas Early Education banner from January 2019.” The Diocese is in discussion with the RAAF at Williamtown and Mission Australia to transition children currently enrolled at the childcare Centre across to what will become St Nicholas Raymond Terrace in January 2019. “We are also in negotiation with Michelle Curtin from Williamtown Preschool to extend the lease of the preschool by 10 months,” he said. To ensure continuity of childcare services, the Diocese is also exploring with Mission Australia the possibility of transferring employees who are currently working at the existing early education facility to St Nicholas. “Our aim is to enable RAAF families - who are now using the childcare services at Raymond Terrace – to continue

to enjoy childcare services once the facility is open in January 2019,” Sean said. St Nicholas Early Education is already taking applications for the Raymond Terrace Centre ahead of the January opening. Among the many new St Nicholas Early Education Centres to be opened in the next two years in the Port Stephens area will be one at Medowie, where the Diocese is aiming to build a new school – the Catherine McAuley Catholic College – and open it in 2020. The $26 million development application for this new school – which comprises the college, a primary school and a new St Nicholas early education centre – has been submitted to the Port Stephens Council.

River Clean up with funding Port Stephens to benefit from almost 200k for announcement Crown Land Environment Management Projects TEN projects in the Port Stephens electorate will benefit from a share in $196,000 in Grants thanks to the NSW Government’s Crown Reserves Improvement Fund. Port Stephens Duty MLC, Catherine Cusack announced the funding this morning at Riverside Park in Raymond Terrace where $33,500 will go to Port Stephens Council to control aquatic weeds in the waterways. “Aquatic weeds such as Alligator weed, Water hyacinth, and Giant Salvinia all have the ability to rapidly cover the water’s surface and if left un-managed can become a major problem in a very short space of time,” said Ms Cusack. “They also have the ability to reduce the amenity of waterways, reduce agricultural access to the water for irrigation and for stock, and reduce the habitat for our precious native fauna.” Areas included in the funding to control aquatic weeds are the Hunter, Paterson and Williams Rivers, as well as the foreshore of the Riverside Caravan Park. Ms Cusack said the funding would also support the hard work of local community groups including Port Stephens PCYC. “Safety will be improved at PCYC Port Stephens with

a $10,000 contribution toward removing two trees, which currently overhang the carpark. A number of visitors have raised concerns about the trees losing branches,” Ms Cusack said. Ms Cusack was joined by Port Stephens Liberal candidate, Jaimie Abbott at the announcement who welcomed the funding, noting that almost $37,000 which will continue the work of koala habitat and dune restoration at One Mile Beach. “I’m really pleased to see funding for all of these important environmental projects and for Port Stephens Council, to continue their weeding program at the One Mile Beach site, ensuring our local marsupials have a safe place to live,” said Ms Abbott. Minister for Lands and Forestry Paul Toole, said the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund program was focussed on ensuring communities and visitors could continue to enjoy local land and facilities. “This year we’ve made a record investment into Crown land with more than $20 million in Grants and loans being provided across the State,” Mr Toole said. To date, the NSW Government has invested $115 million across seven years into Crown land projects.

Go Ahead for Family History Book A GRANT of some $1400 has enabled Port Stephens Family History Society to proceed with the publication of their new book. Port Stephens Council has financed the project which aims at preserving and expanding the history of the convict constructed homestead at Tanilba Bay. The Society’s members are currently examining primary source material to cobble together a detailed picture of the old stone mansion, its original owners, the Caswell family and its subsequent history. Society President Denise Gaudion said that they had recently uncovered documents which relate to an artefact which was believed to be lost. “Records show that a breast plate inscribed ‘King of Tanilba’ was presented to the Newcastle & Hunter District Historical Society.” “We believe that it was given by the early settlers to ‘King Jimmy’, a local indigenous leader. Apparently it had been unearthed in the area around the year 1900,” said Ms Gaudion.

FORTY-eight Tomaree Ladies Probus Club members, and many other Bay Probus friends, thoroughly enjoyed their day doing a Cook’s tour of the progress along Newcastle Foreshore before visiting the Broadmeadow Base of Westpac Rescue Helicopters. Over delicious tea, coffee and scones provided by the volunteers, Adam Tyirell presented a humorous account of the work achieved at the Base along with an endearing video. A generous donation was given from the Group to assist funding this important rescue work. Westpac Rescue Helicopters rely on the generosity of the community to do the work that they do. No one has ever had to pay to be assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. This is because people in our community, along with the NSW Government, through NSW Health and NSW Ambulance, provide the funds to ensure the rescue helicopters are there when, and where,

they are needed. Lunch was at Awaba House, overlooking the beautiful views of Lake Macquarie. As one of the oldest estates in the area, Awaba House and surrounds are steeped in history. Awaba House is an elegant design by Edwin Sara, a noted Newcastle architect, and was home to the Braye family until the Hospitals Commission of New South Wales resumed the site in 1958. No hospital was built, however after many tenants

and periods of neglect, Lake Macquarie City Council purchased the site in 1993 and it began its transition into the special destination it is today. After lunch, many took the opportunity to visit the adjoining Art Gallery, or walk along the foreshore to Marmong Point. The day trip was very capably organised by Tricia Diemar. If you would like to join the Club to enjoy meeting new friends, take similar trips and hear stimulating speakers, please ring Secretary Daphne on 4982 0097 or President Wendy on 4919 1676 for more information.

Spring Fair a Communty best By Rachael VAUGHAN ST BRIGIDS was the talk of the town with their community Spring Fair on the weekend, with a jam packed schedule of activities and events that left no one wanting for more. Rides and stalls galore, catered to all ages groups and interests. The Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed showcased their timber goods, the Lions Club made sure everyone was well fed, and the chocolate wheel had a permanent line up out of the tent. Feather ‘quill’ pencils at old time fare prices of 50c, and impressively decorated lolly bags, tubs and tubes in a variety of themes were a hit with all in attendance, with something for everyone at an affordable price. The crowd was entertained by dancers, performers and even a martial arts display by Koryu Uchinadi in Raymond Terrace, led by 6th Dan Sensei Bob King. The back field was filled with a variety of rides and games, as well as the Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue truck for children to learn about. An impressive stall of plants and creative displays

of succulents was popular with guests, as well as the old fete favourite, the devonshire tea stall. Fresh produce from the school’s own garden was available for purchase, as well as pure Williams River honey. Dear Denise,

Need a Rental but No Rental History? FG Salt Ash FROM time to time I have people

contacting me for advice on how to be a successful rental applicant. One of the more common situations is that they have found themselves after many years of owning their own home, having to apply for a rental. This leaves them in a predicament, as they have no rental history to put forward when applying for a property. My advice for these potential tenants is to always include as much personal information, work related references and character references as possible. Of course, always present yourself neatly and respectfully, likening the situation to a job interview. Sometimes we have had family members offer to go on the lease as well, as a guarantee that should something go wrong, then they will cover the expense. Keep in mind that it will still always be difficult when you are competing against tenants with excellent rental history and references. At the end of the day it is always the landlords call as to whether they give you a chance, but if you put your best foot forward then you will increase your likelihood of success.

Dear Miss HG, I have one word for you. Madonna. Madonna has been pulling off inappropriate fashion for more years than you’ve been alive. The older she gets, the more she pushes the limits. I sometimes high five Madonna’s confidence, but that doesn’t mean I want to emulate her. Since I’m closer in age to your mother than to you, I have some understanding of where your mum is sitting in the fashion stakes. There’s certain things I consider off limits for 50 year olds. The midriff, for example, should be a no-go zone. So too, should very, very short shorts. You know the ones. You probably own several pairs. They are so short that the pockets extend beyond the shorts. Now they do look okay on waifs when teamed with Doc Martins, but I’ve yet to see them work on someone of your mother’s vintage. Not that they don’t try, mind you. And who are we to judge? The bikini is another item that takes some consideration when you reach a certain age. They can look fine in low light or teamed with a sarong, but they rarely look great in broad daylight or after being dumped by a wave, or a husband. In both these cases, the bikini looks a bit ‘try hard’. Having said all of that, many women who are well over 50 can pull off a whole wardrobe of dubious items, and do it with great flair. When you get to a certain age, you tend to care far less about what people think. That is the stage your mum has reached. The positive is that you now have double the number of clothes to choose from. Just see it as a winwin. Alternatively, when she calls you in the street, give her a ‘do I know you?’ expression and run as fast as your skin-tight pleather skirt will allow. She’ll never catch you. The mind may be willing, but those disco knees will be well and truly shot on the home straight.

Hope that helps. Denise.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Community Winners By Rachael VAUGHAN

THIS week was an important one for the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program, with Kate Washington MP giving a speech in Parliament about how it works, and the wonderful outcomes for all involved. Kate Washington said, “As a parent and member of Parliament, I am inspired and in awe of the achievements of the community PBL program in Raymond Terrace.” “I hope that other schools can join forces and that other communities can emulate what is happening in Port Stephens.” This week’s PBL winners were presented by John Picton, Principal of Raymond Terrace Public School. John has been Principal or Director, across all sectors Public, Catholic, Independent and International schools for the past 38 years. He is the product of Public

School Education, attending schools in the inner suburbs of Sydney, and a proud advocate of the system. John has been involved in the PBL Community project since its inception and has witnessed the positive changes in behaviour throughout the town. Ellie Ping from Grahamstown Public School,

for proudly representing her school in the community at the Raymond Terrace Lions Club Junior interschools public speaking competition. Eva Mansfield from Karuah Public School, for representing her school at the singing choir. Eva always displays respect, responsibility and pride in the community.

Zachary Zucca from Raymond Terrace Public School, for volunteering to help Colleen and Stewart from the MarketPlace on the VIP dates and coin numbers when they were not able to do so. Ethan Rowe from Seaham Public School, who, when walking with a friend to the bus stop, heard cries for help and found an elderly lady who had fallen from a ladder. Ethan and his friend acted responsibly, by alerting a family member, who was able

to ring an ambulance. Cameron Hicks from Irrawang High School, for dedication to providing operational support during the Salt Ash fires, as a junior member of the Williamtown/Salt Ash Rural Fire Brigade. Jaiden Smith from Irrawang Public School, for being an outstanding role model whilst at Great Aussie Bush Camp. Jaiden demonstrated the utmost respect for his peers, teachers, camp supervisors and the environment. Jack McDonald from Medowie Public School, for

from the NSW Liberal Government which has provided a further $150,000 in funding towards the project.

The $1.3 million project, being constructed by Taylors Beach Pool Pty Ltd, was funded through the Clubgrants Category

3 Infrastructure Grants program. Port Stephens Duty MLC, Catherine Cusack, who announced the funding, said, the project would provide another option for the local community to improve their health and wellbeing. “The project will see a new facility built that includes a multi-use warm water pool suitable for learnto-swim classes, swimming carnivals, aqua aerobics and hydrotherapy,” Ms Cusack said. Port Stephens Councillor John Nell is an avid swimmer, who told News Of The Area, “We all should welcome the opportunity for kids to learn to swim and for adults to exercise. “It is essential for all kids growing up in Port Stephens, to become good swimmers

to be able to enjoy our beautiful waterways, and for adults, it is safe exercise to keep the body flexible,” he said. Liberal Candidate for Port Stephens Jaimie Abbott said, “I’m so excited about this project, there is a huge need for hydrotherapy services in our local area, it’s something which locals bring up with me all the time. “It’s also great to see the owners of this new pool are swim coaches. They are clearly quite passionate about teaching kids how to swim and that will be a huge benefit for kids in our area. “As a soon to be new Mum, I am looking forward to taking my child here one day to learn how to swim in the warm water and the

pool will be available and comfortable all year round,” she said. Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “It’s great to have Catherine Cusack MLC in town to make some important funding announcements that will benefit Port Stephens. “From a new swim centre at Taylors Beach to more funding for Caring for Our Youth Port Stephens, right through to keeping our precious environment safe from weeds, these are all welcome funding announcements that will have a positive impact on many people in our community,” he said. Residents will have to wait for construction to finish, but the facility should prove to be a popular addition to the health and wellbeing options available to Bay residents.

Sheer power and energy has already got this Australian act booked at major venues from Sydney’s premiere live circuit through to the Central Coast and up the eastern seaboard. The Band prides itself on its delivery of each of the songs they hand pick and play, and with the Band’s performance level and incredible light show it’s easy to see why there is such excitement levels for venues and their punters when the Band is booked to play.

SPRING has sprung and the Port Stephens Community Art Centre Bonsai Group will be holding its annual Bonsai Show this coming long weekend 29 September to 1 October. Bosnia is the art of slowly training plants to take on a perfect miniature form. The Bonsai Group has been thriving for the past 24 years. Bonsai Art Class is held at the Centre on the 1st Wednesday and 3rd Thursday of every month. There will be a display of native and exotic bonsai trees, as well as trees in training prepared by members of the group. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Many of these trees have been worked on for years and are miniatures of landscape giants.” Demonstrations will be held at 11am each day

Ready to assist your business! office@perpetualbookkeeping.com.au By Rachael VAUGHAN

KIDDIES Kiddies Kickboxing, fighting out of coach Daniel Bezuidenhout’s ‘Sweat Shed’, have been busy over the past two months. The Hunter Valley Open in August and the Newcastle Open earlier in September were the first tournaments for many of the Medowie Kickboxers. Despite their lack of experience, they came away with a very impressive medal tally. The small yet talented team returned with ten gold, six silver, five bronze, and two fourth places. Not bad for a team consisting of only twelve members. Even more impressive is

the fact that the current star of the team is a pocket rocket five year old by the name of Jack Blue. Jack has ten other competitors in his local age division, but so far, none of them can handle Jack. After three tournaments so far this season, Jack is undefeated. “He is just blowing the competition out of his way,” Coach Daniel Bezuidenhout told News Of The Area. “We’ve also had a few kids receive special medals recently because of their outstanding performances as well.” After hanging up his gloves in South Africa 11 years ago, Coach Daniel decided to lead by example and start fighting again. He also did not disappoint, and had two out of two tournament wins.
