Spring Fair set to be popular with Community By Rachael VAUGHAN

EVERY three years, St Brigids Primary School puts on their Spring Fair, and News Of The Area was excited to learn that this year is the year, and to catch up with the organiser to learn all about what is happening on the big day. Kristen Jones is not only a teacher at St Brigids, but also the Spring Fair Convenor. Her first Fair as Convenor was when she was a parent at the school, and on the Parents and Friends (P&F) Committee. This year’s Spring Fair will be her fifth as

Steven has also been an active member of Nelson Bay Junior Rugby League Club for 7 years. He was out there marking out fields, prepping grounds and on the BBQ every Saturday at home games for the local Club. Megan Harding Director of Care For You at Home told News Of The Area, “Steven has had to stop work as he now can barely walk or stand and suffers from frequent falls. He has been provided with an electric wheelchair by the NDIS.” “While Steven can still talk at this stage, he has just started having some swallowing difficulties and recently had a feeding tube inserted,” Ms Harding said. Steven’s Wife Jackie has had to go back to work to support the family. “The NDIS funds Steven’s personal cares but Jackie has had to go to work to pay the rent and put food on the table for eight kids, robbing her of valuable time left with Steven,” she said. Steven’s dad played and coached Parramatta Eels in his day and Steven also played junior League for Parramatta Eels. Care For You At Home

A Role Model

CHILDREN these days sometimes find it confusing to pattern their lives on adults who display worthy examples of behaviour. The recent bushfires however provided perfect examples of selfless citizens who rose to the challenge. Our bushfire fighters have always been held in the highest regard by the wider community because they exhibit the values of honesty, commitment, dedication and humility – ideal virtues for the younger generation to emulate. In the hall at Tanilba School there is an Honour

Board with the names of ‘Brooks’ Award’ recipients proudly displayed. On top of this, in the foyer of the admin block, there’s a framed photo on the wall of the gentleman in whose honour the Award was given. The ‘Brooks’ Award’ dates back to 1975. It was instigated to keep alive the memory of a tireless Lemon Tree Passage Brigade member who died at an early age and it was a very big item at the annual Prize Giving day. The school Principal chose a boy and girl who displayed

qualities of ‘industry, community service and consideration for others’. They were awarded a cash scholarship to help purchase school equipment for high school. At a later time it became a joint Award from both the Lemon Tree and Tanilba Brigades. Those chosen to present the prestigious Award included the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, the OC RAAF Williamtown and the District School Inspector and Education Director. Norm’s widow, Eunice, was always in attendance and invited to present one of the school Awards.

Hear the Call of the Pipes

By Marian SAMPSON

HEAR the call of the pipes and the beat of the drums at Clans on the Coast which will be held at Tomaree Sports Complex on Sunday 15 September with activities and entertainment kicking off from 8.30am. See the tartan swirl as the dancers leap in the air as the marching bands and dancing celebrate the Celtic heritage of a culture that is far more ancient than Hadrian’s Wall. Clans on the Coast celebrates Celts in the region for over 180 years.

The opening of the Parade will see a Mass Band and Clans march. The outdoor festival will be preceded by a traditional Ceilidh Dinner Dance where the haggis will be piped in. Ron Swan OAM told News Of The Area, “It’s a great family day out where you can enjoy the culture of the Celts who hail from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany, the Isle of Man, Cornwall and Galicia.” Once again the event will showcase Highlander strength contests with the

tug of war, caber tossing and feats of strength where heavy weights are walked a distance are sure to amaze event attendees. Ron believes that Clans on the Coast helps to preserve the heritage of the clans, when they immigrated to escape poverty, and famine. The Celts were represented amongst the convicts and soldiers of the early British Colonisation of Australia. They were also “ten pound poms”.

How and when they arrived doesn’t matter. What does, is that they now form a large part of the Australian population. “It is important to celebrate and preserve Celtic and all indigenous cultures from around the world. It creates connections and develops an understanding of who we all are. While I am a true blue Australian, I identify with my Celtic heritage and I am proud of it,” he said. The event supports palliative care and cancer care within the Port Stephens community.

CONCERNED members of the public gathered on a property adjacent to Mambo Wanda Wetlands to fight to buy back the land sold erroneously by the NSW Government. Ironically, the gathering was on 109 Foreshore Drive, a block of land which Council had planned to sell off to fund other projects. Prior to the Mambo land sale, Government documents indicated that the site’s two main constraints are ecological and bushfire with the site recognised as consisting of several endangered and vulnerable flora and fauna species. It also provides a vital biolink for the local koala habitat. The reports revealed a total of 11 plant species listed as threatened under the Threatened Species Conservation and

or Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act have been identified as occurring, or having potential to occur, within a 5 km radius of the study area. A total of 100 fauna species listed as threatened under these Acts have been identified as occurring, or having potential to occur, within a 5 km radius of the study area which included 79 bird species, six mammals, 10 bats, three amphibians, one fish and one invertebrate. Two threatened fauna species have previously been recorded within the site, the Koala and Wallum Froglet. The Government documents also noted that the best use for the land is that of a recreational reserve. The community event was attended by Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens, and Councillor John Nell as well as representatives from Eco-Network Port Stephens, local Landcare group representatives, and the public. Kathy Brown a resident who is leading the buyback community action group, spoke about the importance

of not letting the matter of Mambo Wanda Wetlands drop off the community agenda. Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “We shouldn’t have to be here.” “The Government has the power to buy this parcel of land back under a compulsory acquisition, and they have chosen not to,” she said. The issue of the Mambo Wetlands land has polarised the Bay community with locals recognising that this habitat is under threat of development, while ever the land is not in public hands. Councillor John Nell said, “We should keep Mambo Wetlands for the birds and the koalas. “I’m hoping to see something change, the Government needs to act before the state election, it will be good for the candidate and the Government, if we can get the land bought back,” he said.

Gold brick ceremony for fundraiser home

By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Build For A Cure house in Medowie’s Bower Estate, has risen from the slab at a cracking pace, and is almost ready for the big reveal. The Build for a Cure projects works with the Children’s Cancer Institute research with their aim to cure childhood cancer. This very special “House Built with Love” will be auctioned on the 21st of October, with all proceeds from the sale going directly to fund Children’s Cancer Institute’s vital research. This week saw a special ceremony take place, with the laying of a commemorative ‘gold’ brick into the mailbox of the house. Local builder Brett Carr, who has worked on the build of the house, officially laid the brick. Brett has been personally touched by cancer, having lost his young daughter Charlie to childhood cancer last year. The Ransom family also joined the special ceremony, with their son Kane, who is currently battling cancer. Kane’s Mother Natalie and her family attended Wirreanda Public School when they were young. Kane is 7 years old, and was diagnosed with Leukemia a few years ago. He won that particular fight, but has recently relapsed. Natalie Ransom told News Of The Area, “The build gives

Refurbished Artillery Piece IN January of this year, the Raymond Terrace RSL Sub-Branch secured a sponsorship from AGL as part of their work with the Australian Veterans Employment Coalition (AVEC) to undertake a refurbishment project on the 25LB artillery piece (the Gun) located in ANZAC Park, Raymond Terrace. While the Gun was away being refurbished the RSL Sub-Branch funded the construction of a new concrete slab for the gun in a new position within the Park. The refurbished gun was relocated onto its newly positioned slab on 14 August, 2018. An official ceremony was hosted by the Raymond Terrace RSL Sub-Branch to commemorate the return of the refurbished gun, and publicly acknowledge the generous sponsorship of AGL Energy Limited towards the cost of the refurbishment and relocation of the gun. The history of this special artillery piece, and its arrival in Raymond Terrace, has its own story. In the early 1950’s, the Raymond Terrace Junior Chamber of Commerce decided to purchase a piece of equipment to be placed in the park on the southern side of Raymond Terrace. The Australian Army was contacted and it

advised that a Quickfiring 25LB Mark II gun was available from the Bathurst Ordinance Depot for £5.00 ($10.00). It then cost £26.00 ($52.00) to have the gun transported to Raymond Terrace by rail. In 1992, the gun was relocated to ANZAC Park and is one of only a few to be mounted on its swivel ring. The British-designed, Quick-firing 25LB gun was the primary field gun used by Commonwealth forces during World War II. In attendance at the commemoration ceremony was Mr Kerry Allen, whose father Raymond Allen served in New Guinea in the Second AIF Artillery Core, and likely used one of these very guns in battle. Kerry told News Of The Area, “I was very interested in the restoration of this piece, as my father fired guns just like this in action against the Japanese forces, and who knows, maybe this very gun - stranger things have happened.” Having been exposed to the elements in ANZAC Park since 1992, the 25LB gun had deteriorated and was in urgent need of refurbishment and preservation. As the nominal ‘custodian’ of ANZAC Park, the Raymond Terrace RSL Sub-Branch approached

q Special guests in attendance at the ceremony.

and restoration work on the gun between March and May of this year. The preservation and relocation of the gun was in accordance with the SubBranch’s ‘ANZAC Park ReDevelopment Project’ plan. JOBS with a future in small towns are sometimes hard to come by but Cameron Pritchell from Lemon Tree Passage has just hit the jackpot. The 15 year old has just snagged an apprenticeship at the local butcher shop.

He told News Of The Area he absolutely loves it. Currently he is on three months’ trial. His boss Jake Miller is impressed by his performance so far. “Cameron is a quick learner, he shows initiative and has a very engaging

Dear Denise

How do you work out the rental yield on a property? SL, Bobs Farm IF you’ve considered purchasing an investment property you may have seen the term rental yield. This is a comparative used against other potential purchases to assess whether a property has a good income return. There are two types of rental yield – gross rental yield and net rental yield. The easiest to work out is the gross as it is the weekly rental amount x 52 (annual income) and the purchase price or current market value of the property. The calculation process is annual income divided by the property value = $ and x 100. Example: a property achieving $400 per week in rent, currently valued at $400,000 = $400 x 52 = $20,800 divided by $400,000 = 0.052 x 100 = 5.2% gross yield. To calculate the net yield you would try to include all the purchasing costs, ongoing running costs, management costs into the property value. This could be (example) a total of $450,000, reducing the yield. $20,800 divided by $450,000 = 0.046 x 100 = 4.6% net yield. This is a guide only, always seek the advice of an accountant before purchasing an investment. Hope this helps, Denise

My friend has gone a bit loopy. First it was just yoga and incense, but now she thinks she can speak whale. She actually calls herself a whale whisperer on her social media page. I mean, really? Miss KL, Shoal Bay

RESPONSE: Help was gladly given Dear News of the Area, ILONNA Hudson last week (News Of The Area edition 6 September ‘Shame Local Business Not Involved’) referred to the “Build for a Cure” project in Medowie, lamenting that local businesses were not involved in the project

to raise funds for research into childhood cancer. The “Build” was organised by McDonald Jones, who used their regular subcontractors for the project. One of their employees knew that Kurri Kurri Rotary had catered for an earlier “Build” so they were asked to cater for the project;

Kurri Kurri approached the Rotary Clubs of Williamtown, Raymond Terrace and East Maitland for help, and that was gladly given. I am the President of the Rotary Club of Williamtown. Richard Byrne Medowie

Friends with dignity

FRIENDS with Dignity is a National not for profit organisation, established in 2015, and has been honoured with The Australian charity of the year award for 2018. The Friends with Dignity volunteer group support victims of domestic violence to rebuild their lives with purpose, dignity and hope.

Barbara Stevens from the Port Stephens branch of Friends with Dignity told News Of The Area, “Our dedicated team of volunteers work with registered community agencies to turn households into welcoming sanctuaries for families escaping domestic violence through, monetary donations and household items.” “Friends with Dignity

holds two major fundraising functions each year being our Charity Golf day in May and our Charity High Tea in September.” “This year’s high tea will be held on 21 September, and we would love to see some new faces come out to join us and support our very worthy cause,” she said. Tickets are available for purchase at Nigronis for $55 and will be available until 14 September.

Dear Miss KL, WHALES are truly magnificent creatures and they do make some incredible sounds, but I’m not sure we can be expected to interpret them. They only other example I know of someone (or some creature to be more exact) speaking whale is Dory from Finding Nemo. Is this what your friend sounds like when she speaks whale? If so, she may need some sort of intervention of the white coat variety. A whale whisperer? I’ve heard of a horse whisperer, but it must be so much easier whispering to land-based creatures. How does one whisper while wearing scuba gear or a snorkel? What do you actually whisper to a whale apart from, ‘Gosh, you are huge, please don’t swim too close. Sorry for accidentally invading your personal space.’ I’m not convinced that your friend can speak whale, and I don’t think she’s convinced either. It may just be a way to appear more spiritual and worldly and in tune with her psyche or life’s vibrations or whatever else we are supposed to be in tune with when we aren’t racing around like little ants trying to pay off mortgages while the country falls apart. Who has time to speak whale when our super funds are dwindling and our politicians keep jumping on and off the Canberra merry-go-round, stabbing each other in the back when they should be running the country. Forget whale. How about we all learn to speak some common sense for a change. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

conceded 13 goals all season! The Terrace had a few chances in the first half but the Cooks Hill keeper managed to keep a clean sheet going into the half time break. Early into the second half, defensive midfield player Pat Armstrong succumbed to an ankle injury, forcing coach Matt Catford to make some positional changes, and these had an instant impact with the Terrace making more chances for their strikers. They were unlucky not to score on a few occasions, but it was from a Kev Roberts run that forced a defensive error from the Cooks Hill defence and he was brought down

just outside the Cooks Hill 18 yard box giving the Terrace an opportunity at goal from a free kick. The free kick was driven hard and low forcing the Cooks Hill keeper to spill the ball in the attempted save only for Lleyton Eveleigh to run forward and put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 Terrace lead! From there, Cooks Hill gathered momentum, keeping pressure on the Terrace defence until they were rewarded with a penalty. The Terrace supporters were on edge with Cooks Hill now a chance of levelling the score, Keeper Josh Botham held his nerve and made the save much to the delight of the players and supporters. Cooks Hill had further advantage when the Terrace were reduced to 10 players, not long after the referee sent off one of the Terrace defenders for a suspected stomping tackle. Coach Catford was once again forced into positional changes to keep Cooks Hill at bay and hold on for the remaining 10 minutes of the

game. The Terrace held on for the win making 2018 their fifth consecutive first grade grand final victory. Catford, who was previously playing with the club and played in the last four grand finals now had his 1st year as senior coach and has kept the success of the team going. Peter Petryk told News Of The Area, “I need to commend Matt for the excellent job he did at coaching this season, with the help of his father Ken Catford.” “Big thanks also to Mick White and assistant coaches Tom Oldaker, Nima Nikfarjam, Chris McCabe and Rod Landers.” Next season will see the Terrace move up to the Zone premier league, after wrapping up the minor premiership this season. It was a very successful season for the club with all 3 grades making the finals for the zone league teams, as well as All Age Friday night F Grade and Under 13’s also having grand final wins in the previous week.

Driving the rock solid rhythm section on drums is Tim the animal, Dave (Daggy) Lewis - Bass and vocals, and on guitar and vocal Wayne (Sparky) Simpson on guitar and vocals the powerhouse Bob (Fish) Glover up front on vocals - he has style, he has class, he delivers rock as it should be. Bowlers took on some local players in a “friendly” today. The grass green, although still a little damp, was brought into play to accommodate nearly 70 players enjoying some friendly bowls and great fellowship offered by the Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Club. 5 SEPTEMBER The spring bowling season was off to a damp start with early showers delaying play for 30 minutes today. The heavy rain early in the week prevented any play on the grass green so all matches were played on the synthetic. Despite the weather, 43 players competed in the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. Five teams completed the double however; it was the team of Ray Prigg, Ron Green and Merv Mills that took home the money on 58 points Col Fossey was the winner of the Myall Bistro Voucher. The Club welcomed back Ron Green, Luke Gliwa, Leigh Hunt and Geoff Page. Great to have you all back! 8 September A large contingent of bowlers representing the Bay

sunny conditions. Defending Champions, Bette and Col Saillard were opposing Sandra Leisemann and Merv Mills. It was anybody’s game at the hallway point, even though Sandra and Merv trailed by 3 shots. The likely turning point of the game occurred on the 14th end when Bette and Col picked up a fortuitous 4 to open up an 8 shot lead. Sandra and Merv fought back to win the closing 4 ends but they could not bridge the gap. Bette and Col were declared the Club Mixed Pairs Champions for 2018 winning 14-12.
