Firies Climb for MND By Rachael VAUGHAN

FIRE FIGHTERS across Port Stephens have been training hard for a great cause. Regardless of their Brigade origin, they are united for a common goal, to raise funds and awareness for the horrific disease that kills two Australians everyday, Motor Neurone Disease (MND). MND is a progressive, terminal neurological disease. There is no known treatment or cure, and for every two Australians who die every day from MND, another two are diagnosed. Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue and Medowie Rural Fire Brigade both have members training hard for their special fundraiser, ‘Firies Climb for MND’ on 20 October, 2018. All participating Fire Fighters will climb 1504 steps of the Sydney Tower Eye, in full fire fighting kit, weighing an extra 20 kilos on their bodies. You can join the cause,

q Firies across Port Stephens have trained hard in all kinds of locations, one being Stockton Bridge in full kit.

and find your favourite local firefighter to support at: www.firiesclimbformnd.org. au. If you’d like to support in person before the climb, the Medowie team have two more fundraisers you can contribute to. You can attend their Trivia fundraiser, organised by Amy LeMesurier and Louise McClelland as their contribution to the Lower Hunter RFS fundraising team. It will take place on 13 October at Medowie Community Centre, where there will be prizes for best dressed and best table decorations. Bookings can be made with Louise on 0407102282 for only $10 each. There is also a ‘bucket shake’ outside Wirreanda Public School on Friday October 19 where you can donate loose change, buy a drink cooler or a slap band. Kyra McGrorey-Clark,

Through the NSW Government’s Regional Growth - Environment and Tourism Fund, established under the Restart NSW fund, in association with CMCA, Port Stephens Council has installed a “Dump-Ezy” dump point unit and signage and received up to $3,750 towards installation costs. “The best way to get RV travellers to visit Raymond Terrace, stay and spend money with local businesses, is to offer the essential services they need” said CMCA CEO, Richard Barwick. “I know CMCA members appreciate being made welcome and our members always support those communities that support them”. PORT Stephens’ inclusive community choir, The Seaside Singers are set to showcase their talents in Japan on a 17-day tour, titled Creating Harmony Together. Fourteen choristers and their Musical Director will perform and take part in workshops at each of Port Stephens’ sister cities, Kushiro, Yugawara and Tateyama, and at ‘pop-up’ concerts in Art Galleries and Museums. Mrs Antrum said the choir would perform in concert with Japanese choirs and will hold workshops to teach each other songs they will present at the concerts. The Australian

Government has awarded the choir a $20,000 Grant through The Australia-Japan Foundation. An enormous amount of work has gone into preparing a repertoire for what is shaping up to be a very busy tour. The repertoire for the tour includes a mix of songs by Australian and Japanese composers and the choir will sing these in the original languages. Traditional melodies such as Waltzing Matilda and Kojo no Tsuki (Moon at the Ruined Castle) are also featured. One of these, “Morning Tide” is a traditional Aboriginal Melody, arranged by Stephen Leek and inspired by the musical tradition of the

Torres Strait Islander people. Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, helped facilitate the visit, which includes two days homestay accommodation to give the choristers a feel for the Japanese way of life. A highlight will be a performance at the famous Hakone Venetian Glass Museum, not far from Yugawara. The Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee is a 355C committee of Council, which receives funding each year for their administration costs. Nigel Dique of the Sister Cities Committee told News Of The Area, “Membership to Sister Cities is open to everyone in Port Stephens and members

Dear Jasminda,

ur resident Property Expert, is here to offer advice. Denise will be responding to questions from News Of The Area readers, throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your questions to Denise, care of media@newsofthearea.com.au and include your, name and suburb.

When I go walking, I always say hello to people who walk past. Some reply, but others say nothing. I’m sure they have heard me. Mrs PA, Medowie Dear Mrs PA,

experiences proving popular and a win/win for both schools. Alternatively imagine opening our homes to long suffering farmers/families for a seaside break here at our beautiful seaside community. This letter is meant to appeal to those who are prepared to respond and organize.

IT’S a weird old world. A simple hello takes very little effort. Just a smile or a nod can make someone feel less alone; it can even make their day. You know, the older I get, the more I feel that this earth is divided into three main types: the ignorant, the arrogant and the compassionate. Take holding the door open for others. If I’m entering a shop with a screen door, and someone is not too far behind me, I will stand there and hold it for them. I’m not sure who taught me, but it was ingrained from a young age. Most people say thank you to this common courtesy, but some look at me as though I’m stark raving mad, or else they walk through without a nod of recognition. Arrogant? Ignorant? Probably a fine old mix of both. The walkers who don’t reply may not have heard you. Many people walk wearing headphones. But if they did indeed hear you, I can think of no logical reason why they wouldn’t respond, unless you look like an axe murderer, which I somehow doubt. Maybe they are trying to walk off some deep-seated resentment. Instead of being in touch with nature and recalling the fine lyrics and vocals of Nina Simone’s Feeling Good, they are instead beset by the more angst-ridden version by Muse. I suggest you YouTube both versions to understand where I’m coming from. Don’t take it to heart, Mrs PA. It’s not you, it’s them. Keep saying hello, smile, nod, do whatever makes you feel good. Then, when they are a few metres away, turn around, run, crash tackle them and say: ‘Is it so god-damn hard to say hello? Are you ignorant or arrogant? Jasminda wants to know.’ Good luck. Let me know how you go.

Neil Renfree Tea Gardens

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Dear Denise

What’s Couch Surfing? FD Karuah COUCHSURFING websites are a system that’s been setup to enable people to book and stay a night or two at a registered person’s home. Effectively going from home to home and sleeping on people’s couches. So, every night the registered person can be hosting different people whom they have never met before, in the home. Landlord’s need to be aware of this as a tenant may decide to be a host & have unknown people being housed on a regular basis. There was a landlord who recently found out that his tenant was hosting couchsurfers. The tenant loved it and had a steady stream of backpackers coming and going through the property, day & night. The tenant had not gained permission from the landlord to provide these services. Landlords should be wary of the general wear & tear on the property, the neighbours having to sometimes endure late night partying, arrivals and departures plus their landlord’s insurance. Should the property burn down & you were found to be providing a backpacker hosting service in your investment property, would you be covered by your insurance company? I think possibly not. Hope that helps. Denise

A step further for Quirindi Dear News Of The Area, I WAS greatly moved by the plight of this community who are suffering from the severe drought. Perhaps we, as a community, could establish a “partnership” with our country cousins and generate support and recognition for a dying community by reaching out to them. FOR those over 55 years young and at least partially retired, Probus continues to provide a variety of social and physical activities. There are six different Probus Clubs on the Tomaree Peninsula and they all offer something special to their members. Some activities are local and regular, others

are special day trips and some “Probies” travel far and wide together enjoying their golden years. The friendly members of Fingal Bay Probus Club have recently enjoyed a morning tea at Bev Atkins’ home. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “It’s simple social activities, like our morning teas that keep people connected to their

community.” The Club also recently held an appreciation of fine wines at Jenny Wright’s home. Visiting relatives to the wine appreciation were quick to recognise the Probus watchwords of friendship, fellowship and fun. The Walking Group sat down for a catch up and a cup of coffee at Bay Harbour Fish Café while they recovered after an enjoyable walk for pleasure along the breakwater. The Probus Club of Fingal Bay meets on the second Monday of every month at 9.30am at The Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. Future members and guests are welcome to a Club that offers a selection of activities and a variety of guest speakers. THE Raymond Terrace Scout Group has a new activity they are planning to run, and it’s one all homeowners can get behind to make their properties safer to enter in the evenings. The Scouts Group is combining fundraising for its Group with awareness of Scouts in Raymond Terrace, and a special safety initiative. Raymond Terrace Scouts Leader John Doyle, told News Of The Area, “What we are proposing is to offer to paint the drive kerb wings and drive on strip with a white concrete paint.” “This will make the driveway visible on dark or rainy nights, and make access for people onto the drive much easier and safer.” “We are asking $15 for the ‘kerb wings’ only and $25 for ‘kerb wings and drive on strip’ for a single (3m nominal) width Drive on Strip.” “Wider drive ways would be by negotiation, starting at $35 for kerb wings and double (6m nominal) width drive on strip,” he said. Anyone interested in seeing the work so far of these dedicated Scouts, can do so by having a drive past of their trial properties in Raymond Terrace on Benjamin Lee

HOMEGROWN academic, Rachael O’Brien (nee Tarrant) has lots of reasons to celebrate this week, after being award a Doctor of Philosophy (Management) by the University of Newcastle. Rachael is the perfect example of the wonderful young people Port Stephens produces. Rachael grew up in Raymond Terrace, went to Raymond Terrace Public School and Raymond Terrace High School, where she graduated in 1996. Her PhD thesis title is certainly a mouthful, named ‘Resistance, paradox and professional identity in speech - language pathologist's perceptions of working with allied health assistants'. Rachael told News Of The Area, “I've been working clinically as a speech-language pathologist for about 16 years,

Rachael’s father, Ken Tarrant, worked in the Salon at Hair 22, before selling and returning to University to study nursing. He has been a registered nurse since 2000, working at the Calvary Mater, and the Maitland Hospital. Rachael said, “He retired from nursing this year, and has also worked harder than ever helping look after my boys who both have a wonderful relationship with their grandparents.” Rachael and her husband Sean moved from Newcastle, to Dubbo, to Canberra and then in 2005 made the move back to good old Raymond Terrace, purchasing the house Rachael grew up in, on the family farm, Kinross farm (of Kinross tomatoes fame), in Raymond Terrace. Congratulations Rachael on your achievements, and good luck with the next step of your journey.

but have resigned from my clinical role to pursue a career in academia.” “Just this week I was offered a contract as a lecturer in speech-language pathology at the University of Newcastle, so it's double celebrations for me this week.” Rachael’s family are well known in Raymond Terrace, and are a special unit who have taught their children to strive for their dreams, and to be proud of themselves and their achievements. Many old school Raymond Terrace locals will remember Mr and Mrs Tarrant owning ‘Hair 22’ for many years, where Rachael remarked she spent quite a lot of her childhood. Rachael said, “Mum worked at Taylor's pharmacy for 48 years, and retired in 2013.” “Since then she's worked incredibly hard helping look after my two little boys (Ollie and Dougal) while I completed my studies.”

Local man stabbed dead in Queensland “Detectives are still working to figure out what happened before the streetside fight.”

A CORONIAL inquiry is now underway into the tragic death of 27 year old Tea Gardens man, Tom Davy near Townsville last week. Davy, along with 37 year old, Father of three, Corey Christensen were both stabbed to death in the small seaside village of Alva Beach, in northern Queensland. Police described the crime scene as horrific. Detectives are investigating

whether self defence was a factor. It’s claimed the stabbing followed a fight breaking out at Alva Beach, witnessed by 29 year old Candice Locke, who fled the scene and ran to the house of 19 year old Dean Webber to ask for help. The 19 year old man was questioned by Police but later released. Ms Locke, later underwent surgery in hospital for shoulder injuries. The family of Tom Davy rushed

to Queensland last week as investigations began. Queensland Police Detective Inspector Chris Lawson told News Of The Area, “Detectives are still working to figure out what happened before the streetside fight.” “It is extremely complex, we’re dealing with a number of legal issues and we’re also dealing with a number of people, just to confirm what occurred prior to the incident.”

SUMMER is on its way and the Australian Lifeguard Service, Port Stephens Council and local Surf Life Saving Clubs are preparing for another busy beach season. The number of visitors to Port Stephens beaches grew by a staggering 20% during 2017-2018 to 617,000 people, with numbers expected to continue rising. With that in mind, lifeguards at One Mile Beach will begin their patrols in time for the long weekend this Saturday 29 September. Volunteer lifesavers will patrol both Fingal and Birubi Point beaches on weekends and public holidays from 29 September, while the professional lifeguard

service begins from Tuesday 2 October. Council’s Contracts and Services Coordinator, Ian Crawford says both professional lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers play an important role over the warmer months. “Last year, our lifeguards made 33 rescues, gave 271 first aid treatments and took more than 64,000 preventative actions to keep our locals and visitors safe on Port Stephens beaches,” Mr Crawford said. “That’s an incredible amount of work! We know that our community is in safe hands with both our Australian Lifeguard Service and our volunteer Surf Life Saving Clubs. “This year, the community will benefit from the brand new One Mile Beach Lifeguard Facility, which includes an elevated

shark tower, first aid room and safe storage for lifesaving equipment. It’s one of the best facilities in the State.” Surf Lifesaving Clubs will provide Volunteer Lifesaving Services on weekends and public holidays at Fingal and Birubi Point beaches. Port Stephens Lifeguard Supervisor Phil Rock says beachgoers should remain vigilant. “Our safety message is simple — always swim at a patrolled location, always stay between the red and yellow flags, and never swim alone,” Mr Rock said. “Make sure you follow the directions of lifeguards or lifesavers and if you’re ever unsure of ocean conditions, just ask us for advice — that’s what we’re here for!”
