Hair-do for a cause By Rachael VAUGHAN MANY moving stories were shared last week at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace World’s Greatest Shave event. From 11am to 7pm, countless men, women and children donated funds, shaved or coloured their heads, and raised awareness for the heartbreaking disease that is Cancer. By 1:30pm, the total had already exceed $1,700 just in the small donation bucket alone. MarketPlace Raymond Terrace Centre Manager Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz told News Of The Area, “On the day we had stories,

shared laughter and tears, but most of all we got the awareness out to the public.” “We had people join us on the day who didn’t know what the Foundation did, and how they can help in so many ways, through to not only patients, but families and friends.” From two year olds with the tiniest pigtails sprayed pink, to grown men with long hair shaved down to a number one, through to Port Stephens top Police Officers taking the plunge. Port Stephens Police Officer Chief Inspector Tony Townsend himself battled Cancer, diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2013, spending twelve months in hospital undergoing chemotherapy,

and also received a bone marrow transplant. He said, “I cannot speak highly enough of the support I was given by the Leukemia Foundation when I was treated for this illness during 2013 and 2014.” “After three transplants, fifty two blood transfusions and twelve months in hospital, I was fortunate enough to get through it and come back to work.” “Sadly, many others I met on that journey did not,” Chief Inspector Townsend said. MarketPlace Raymond Terrace are yet to announce their total funds raised, with donations still coming in from online and donation tins in stores around Raymond Terrace, but they know a wonderful amount has been raised for people in need.

No Comply no Wi-Fi FROM Page 1 to encourage skaters at Boomerang Park, Raymond Terrace to do the right thing with their litter.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says this is a new and exciting approach to dealing with a problem like litter. “Port Stephens Council is

incredibly innovative in the litter prevention space, and this grant will allow us to trial a new approach of rewarding people who do the right thing and look after our environment. “As the name suggests, the trial will deliver free, solar

generated Wi-Fi internet through the bin as reward for putting litter in it,” Mayor Palmer said. “It’s an exciting idea, which if successful, could be rolled out to other parts of our region,” he added. Council Rangers will

regularly patrol the area and will distribute in-car litter bags to target littering from vehicles visiting the park, while Permanent Tosser! signage will be installed to promote the anti-litter message. The new litter campaign

will also be integrated into the local primary schools’ waste education programs. Port Stephens Council’s initiative is one of 18 projects successfully funded through round 4 of the Litter Prevention Grants program.

YII barray marrunggang. This is the response given to the student reading the acknowledgement to country at events held at Irrawang Public School. The term means ‘this country is beautiful’ in Gathang, the language of our Worimi people. The school offers a special language class at Irrawang Public School, for students to learn Gathang, taught by Sharon from Murrook Cultural Centre. Irrawang Public School has a high percentage of Indigenous students enrolled, and makes every effort to immerse all students in not only local Worimi culture, but to have a strong, educated understanding of the history of our Indigenous people across Australia and all they have experienced over time. There was no better example of this than their recent event to commemorate the 10th anniversary of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s apology to the Stolen Generations of Australia. The assembly saw year five

and six students, and a collection of respected members of the Indigenous community and their families and associated guests, listen to the moving and emotional stories of Aunty Margo, Aunty Judy and Aunty Mary. These women shared with attendees how the policies and procedures of the then Government affected their lives, families and connection to culture. Irrawang Principal Stacy Mathieson is passionate about Aboriginal culture and keeping it thriving in the school system. She told News Of The Area, “Shared stories is such a wonderful way to enlighten our students on Australia’s past.” “I personally, was privileged to be there for both Aunty Judy and Aunty Margo at different points in time through their emotional journey.” “At Irrawang Public School, I am proud of the support we provide for all of our students, including our 110 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, yet acknowledge that we still have a more work to do,” she said.

Maintenance projects for Hunter River High and Irrawang High Raymond Terrace

PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC last week visited Hunter River High School and Irrawang High Schools in Raymond Terrace to inspect current and planned maintenance projects at both schools. Mr MacDonald said he was keen to see the projects underway for himself to appreciate the current and future needs of schools in Port Stephens.

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

In the past week I have had three people bump into me because they are on their mobile phones with their heads down while walking. It is becoming a hazard to walk along a path or a supermarket aisle these days. Mrs ND, Raymond Terrace Dear Mrs ND,

THERE are so many hazards out there. Paths are loaded with dogs on extendable leads, people dawdling in their activewear, cyclists with bells that scare the bejesus out of us, nannas on motor scooters, stray toddlers, yogis practising mindfulness, roller skating enthusiasts, teenagers carrying hotted-up sound systems on their shoulders, and various other combinations that are destined to end in a major collision. Supermarket aisles are just as bad. You have shop assistants stacking shelves, merchandisers doing stock rotation, toddlers lying on the ground in full tantrum mode, mothers’ groups having a weekly meeting (their prams creating an impenetrable barricade), unidentified liquid spills, sulking husbands, frazzled shoppers, trolleys that only veer in one direction due to dodgy wheels, and on it goes. Now, add to the mix the ever-growing number of individuals who have their heads permanently bowed, as though praying to their Smartphones, and every outing is a catastrophe. You can try clapping very loudly before the collision takes place. From experience this works quite well, even though people will look at you as though you are a bit of a loony. Or else walk and shop in the early hours, because you can bet that these poor, misguided phone addicts will be getting some shut-eye to soothe their damaged retinas. Carpe diem, Jasminda

“I asked for and received a briefing from Schools Infrastructure on maintenance processes and strategy for Hunter schools in December, and was pleased to follow up today with a visit to two schools that the briefing covered,” Mr MacDonald said. “The NSW Government is committed to addressing the maintenance list at Hunter schools and it’s important for me to see this underway and pleasing to see the progress we are making.” “My thanks goes to Hunter River High School Principal Deb Dibley and Irrawang High School Principal Paul Baxter for their passion, commitment, and innovative approaches to public education.”

RAYMOND TERRACE News Of The Area

The home many have been following THE house that came-up for sale on the popular riverfront of Raymond Terrace has changed hands. Homes along this stretch are very tightly held and seemingly are even passed through family to family. Current owner Rochelle Timony-Wright said she is sad to leave the home as it has given the family-of-five so many wonderful memories. “We originally weren’t too sure if we should sell or not but the home is now too small for us.” “We’re off to 2.5 acres and building, so we are looking forward to the next chapter of our lives,” she said. Real Estate Agent Denise Haynes said that, “We (R&R Property) are tapping into this Raymond Terrace and surrounding area and the homes we have listed in the last month have all already sold.” “We sold this Hunter Street home to buyers who saw through the first Open Day,” she said. “The key to the success was a dynamic

marketing plan for the home,” Ms Haynes told News Of The Area. “From what we can tell the sale also achieved a record price for the street.” Ms Timony-Wright said, “Yes, we were blown away with the price R&R Property achieved, both with price and how quickly it sold.” “From the first second we ‘hit-themarket’, Denise just went for it. She has so many marketing strategies and it was amazing seeing the way she operates.”

State Athletics Champs A RECORD twenty two Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre athletes are heading to Homebush next weekend to contest the annual Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships in a total of 44 events. This is also the largest contingent of Under 17 Raymond Terrace athletes with 7 qualifying for State. They have all qualified after competing at the recent Port Hunter Zone Regional Athletics Championships held at Mingara, Central Coast. They not only needed to overcome the best athletes in the Region, but the most extreme weather conditions experienced at this time of year. Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre spokesperson Deidre Hall told News Of The Area, “While enduring heat in the high 30’s on the Saturday,

athletes then had to cope with Sunday’s opposite conditions of temperatures that plummeted to the midteens with rain and wind most of the day.” “All of the athletes showed incredible resilience both on and off the track.” State qualifiers are Under 10 – Ashlyn Wall, Dixie Conlon, Amelia Said, Under 11 – Sienna Newton, Ashleigh Vetter, Riley Irvine, Under 12 – Keira McGregor, Under 13 – Harper Collins, Ebony Newton, Under 14 - Grace Gray, Under 15 – Jack Kenny, Thomas Bray, Leila InglisMonk, Owen Oquendo, Under 15 – Nathan Swan, Under 17– Victoria Allen, Belle Leonard, Gemma Hancock, Benjamin Edstein, Thomas Jenkinson, Lucinda Bray and Duncan Akerman. Five of these athletes broke Region Records – Under 12 Keira McGregor 200m,

Under 13 Ebony Newton 200m and 200m hurdles, Under 15 Owen Oquendo

300m hurdles; and Under 17 300m hurdles Belle Leonard and Gemma Hancock.
