By Rachael VAUGHAN THE official ceremony to announce the nine Port Stephens residents honoured with Port Stephens Annual Awards at this year’s Australia Day celebrations was a very special affair. With passionate addresses by Uncle Neville for Welcome to Country, Peter McLean as the Australia Day Ambassador and Mayor Ryan Palmer opening the proceedings, the tone was set for a very moving ceremony. All nominees for each category were acknowledged for their ongoing contribution to the community and presented with a certificate and pen. This year, former Councillors Sally Dover and Geoff Dingle were awarded the prestigious title of Freeman of Port Stephens for their extensive dedication to the community and over ten years service on Council. Freeman of Port Stephens is an honour given to individuals who have distinguished themselves with the highest order of community service. The Citizen of the Year award was taken out by Raymond Terrace’s own Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz, who has been a passionate advocate for the Raymond Terrace community for the past two decades. Colleen has been an active patron of the Positive Behaviour for Learning framework, which aims to create safe teaching and learning environments for local

WITH the opening of the brand new $200,000 skate park at Boomerang Park and $80,000 skate park at Lakeside Reserve late last year, Raymond Terrace’s old skate park behind MarketPlace shopping centre will be removed in February 2018. The new skate park at Boomerang Park is

situated just over 500 metres from the old park and has the added bonus of new amenities, seating and shade. Brock Lamont, Council’s Community and Recreation Coordinator says that now two new skate park facilities have been constructed in Raymond Terrace, it is time for the old park to be

removed. “The Boomerang skate park was opened to the public late last year and is one of the best in Port Stephens. It’s a multi-functional facility with a bowl, rail, transitions and banks of various difficulty. The park can be used by skaters, scooters and BMX riders of all abilities,” Mr Lamont said. “Council has also opened the Lakeside Reserve skate park which is targeted as an

entry level skate park while still providing interesting elements for more experienced skaters. It is proving very popular with children from the nearby schools,” Mr Lamont said. “Now that our skaters have these fantastic new facilities at Boomerang Park and Lakeside Reserve, Council can decommission the old park,” he said.

Australia Day at Riverside Park By Rachael VAUGHAN RAYMOND Terrace was treated to a vibrant community celebration on the banks of the Hunter River at Riverside Park for Australia Day. The official ceremony to present Australia Day awards was up first, with Uncle Neville Lilley addressing the crowd and giving a very moving Welcome to Country.

He acknowledged the Worimi people as the traditional custodians of our beautiful land, and invited attendees to care for it and love the beautiful place we call home, as the Worimi people have for so many generations. The crowd listened to a passionate speech by Australia Day Ambassador Peter McLean, Chief Executive Officer of the Can

He encouraged Port Stephens residents to concentrate on what is important in life, and to give your passion and energy to the things that matter most. The Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed entertained the crowds with their band, as did the Jumping Jukebox Band. The children were treated to free rides along the riverbank, and were able to try out AFL with a series of fun skill based activities by Port Stephens Power AFL Club. The Aquatic Club of Raymond Terrace put on an action packed speedboat demonstration, while the RAAF jets roared overhead in spectacularly low flypasts. President’s Barbecue By Rachael VAUGHAN RAYMOND Terrace Lions have come together to celebrate a momentous year in our community, with their annual ‘Presidents Barbecue’ celebration at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club. President of Raymond Terrace Lions, Judith Bee, told News Of The Area, “This great afternoon is just a way of thanking and rewarding all our wonderful helpers and volunteers throughout the year.” “It’s our way of thanking everyone for the countless volunteer hours that are put into all the activities we do, by people who don’t expect anything in return.” This year alone, the Lions club have participated in or organised a plethora of community activities. These include, but are

not limited to; Christmas gift wrapping, driver reviver, Seaham Carols, selling cakes and puddings, feeding the firies, community barbecues, ‘Host the Diggers’ dinners and Youth Of The Year. All monies made by the Lions Club goes directly back into the community. In 2016, they provided funds to install seating at Riverside Park, in 2017 they donated significant funds to aid research into childhood cancers and in 2018 they are planning to erect shade structures at Riverside Park. Bob Findley, a director of Raymond Terrace Lions and cabinet treasurer of the District Lions, was in attendance at this year’s Presidents Barbecue, and was vocal in encouraging people to come along and try out their group. “We are always on the

lookout for new members, our current members range from early twenties to the late eighties.’ “Allan Cox, one of the original charter members, is still a treasured member of our Club.” “We have people from all walks of life, so you’re guaranteed to find people you can enjoy time with,” he said. Bob is a past district Governor of Lions, and a life member of Lions International. He was awarded an OAM for Community Work in the Queen’s Birthday honours for 2017. He added, “We are thankful to everyone who joins us to volunteer, and also our respective partners for encouraging and supporting the time we spend on Lions activities.”

The Raymond Terrace Lions meet twice a month

they are called out to an accident. Hamish the Llama was overwhelmingly popular with the crowds, as were the pony rides, balloon art and face painter. Mayor Ryan Palmer said the focus of this year’s celebration was on community, “Everyone who calls Port Stephens home

at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm except for Christmas time, and their barbecue in January.

has a unique and important story to tell, whether they were born here, or whether they chose to make this their home. “Australia Day is an opportunity to reflect on how lucky we are here in Port Stephens and to celebrate all of the people that make this such a fantastic community to be a part of.” An Info form can be found online at lionsclub. org.au or you can email the Club Secretary Inga Kasch on imk.4@hotmail.com

Tech Savvy Seniors Classes By Marian SAMPSON

OLDER people often struggle with new technology. Some are left pondering things that others may take for granted, such as do you really need antivirus software, how safe is it to click a link on an email or to download a file to your system? How do you download an App and use it? There is now help at hand. Port Stephens Library in collaboration with Tech Savvy Seniors is offering workshops at Tomaree Library at Salamander Bay

and at Raymond Terrace library. The program is being delivered in a series of free classes which are supported by the State Library and Telstra. The sessions will be covering topics as diverse as social media, using a tablet or a smartphone, cyber safety and using the internet. Each class will run for approximately two hours and morning tea will also be provided to participants. Mr Paul Whittemore, a library customer who has booked into all the courses told News Of The Area, “These courses at Tomaree Library

are a wonderful opportunity for seniors in our society to keep up to date with new technologies. “We don’t want to be left behind when there are so many wonderful advantages to be gained with knowledge of how to use smartphones, tablets, and the Internet. “It is also important to be aware of Cybersafety, and for some to know how to access social media,” he said. Spaces in each class are limited so members of the community are encouraged to contact their library to book their place at one or all of these classes.

q Port Stephens library customer Mr Barry Haigh using one of Tomaree Library’s free Internet computers.

Dear Mr LA, THIS is just another example of a whole list of issues that fall under the category of ‘Ignorant Sod of a Neighbour’. He is probably just chilling out, listening to some lunatic on talk back radio or he’s singing along to the 80s hour, and he thinks he is on a freeway instead of a sleepy semi-rural road that shares a boundary with your freshly washed SUV, your glistening windows, and your sugar-soaped walls. You can try the diplomatic path and approach him. Just say, “Hey mate, I was just wondering if you had noticed the dust bowl you create when you drive 60km per hour down our shared driveway? You probably didn’t. I’d really appreciate it if you slowed down a bit.” That may not work. You may need to get a bit passive aggressive. “Hey, buddy, the whole concept of neighbours revolves around being neighbourly. I considerately deliver your mail when it gets placed in the wrong letter box, and I considerately dodge your dog when it sits in the middle of my driveway. All you need to do is follow my lead and slow down. Thanks.” If he’s as dumb as a hammer, you probably need to implement some road blocks. Maybe make a speed hump so he gets airborne. Some solar-powered fake cop lights? That should clarify your message. Or erect a sign that says, ‘Drive like your kids live here’ or maybe ‘Slow down, adults at play’. That should really freak him out. I hope these suggestions work, Mr LA. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Immortality on Offer Karuah RSL Bowling Club By Trevor DAVIES

IT’S not equal to being one of the “Australians of the Year”. It’s not as good as receiving a “New Year Honour”, nor as good as being elected to a “Sporting Hall of Fame”. But. Eight members of Karuah RSL Bowls Club this last weekend vied for an “immortality” almost as good by competing in the final of the club fours 2018 Club Championship. Victory would mean a whole year as champions, as well as having their names painted up on the wall on the club’s honour boards forevermore. The contenders were the defending champions, Gordon Latimore’s team of John French, Sam Rees, and Peter Dennis, tried and true, attempting to win the comp for the 3rd year in a row. The challengers were Greg Pearson’s team of Dennis Ashbridge, Leigh Hunter and John Bilby, newer club members attempting to cement their reputations. What a day, what a competition. A large and knowledgeable crowd

gathered on the verandah at the RSL Club Sunday afternoon with the best vantage points taken early. A hush of expectation descended as the umpire tossed the coin and this almost immediately changed to applause as the very high standard bowling got under way. This final was the game the whole club had all been waiting for! After a very tight first 6 ends both teams were dead even, then after 2 big ends and some very tight others

q

RAYMOND TERRACE News Of The Area

Gordon’s team drew well ahead to lead 14 - 6 after 11 ends. But hold on to your hats. Absurdly skilled bowling by players in all 4/8 positions saw a comeback to 14 - 12 after 15 ends and then 16 14 after 17 ends! Absolutely unbelievable bowling saw the jack moved 3 or 4 times every end with the holder of shot changing almost as much. Last end Gordon’s side held the lead by 3 but Greg’s side fought back to be in a position to get 4 before Gordon finally

dashed their hopes by picking up the jack with a precision bowl that took the jack and competition away! What a game - played in the absolute best spirit in front of an appreciative verandah of spectators astounded by the skills on display! Well done to Greg, Dennis, Leigh and John, a great display of team bowling. Congratulations to Gordon, John, Sam and Pete. You have proved that 3 in a row is possible if your good enough. Well done Karuah RSL Bowls Club, the future of both home grown bowlers and those bowlers who choose to come and join our great club looks very bright!

Fish Run Riot

By Geoff WALKER PEOPLE love fishing reports. That’s why we regularly cruise by the fish cleaning table at Lemon Tree Passage in Henderson Park with the hope of getting a story. It’s not easy winkling the good oil out of fisher folk as some of them jealously guard their ‘secret spots’. Some even refuse to tell us the bait they use. Others give out false leads to keep wannabes away from their hot spots. Not so local legend Adam Parbera who has

been scoring big time with both fish and crabs. While collecting yellowtail bait (yakkas) in the white water around Tomaree Headland the kingfish came on and he and his two mates had their 15 fish quota in record time. They weighed in at up to 8kg each. The intrepid trio returned at night to the same spot to clean up big time on the snapper. These were running riot and Adam’s largest topped the scales at 9kg. That’s not all. He reefed in a thumping 32kg jew from

a hole near North Arm Cove. Why waste the fish frames? Most anglers feed them to the pelicans but Adam recycled some through his crab pots and nailed some monster muddies at Karuah. So, dear reader, there you have it! Why hide in your air-con cave this summer watching the cricket and guzzling endless cans? Set the alarm clock for 3am. Hit the water and before you know it you’ll be back home with a boat load. If Adam can do it, so can you!

Nettyheads Clinic media@newsofthearea.com.au

By Rachael VAUGHAN

WITH Port Stephens Netball Association opening their registrations for the upcoming season in the next couple of weeks, the time was ripe for local netball coaching duo ‘Nettyheads’ to hold a coaching clinic on the Raymond Terrace courts last Saturday. Twenty young netballers, between the ages of 10 and 12, took the opportunity to further develop their skills in the game of netball with two of the best coaches in the land. Nettyheads, created by former Hunter Jaegers and Sydney Swifts goal attack Tiffany Gilmour and NSW Institute of Sport junior Nat Hilder, put the group through their paces for three hours on what turned out to be a hot summer’s day, but the effort was no doubt worth it. Despite the warm weather, the players were

focussed and engaged in all of the drills that Gilmour and Hilder put them through, an experience that will hopefully assist them when competition starts in the coming months and possibly beyond.

“We want to bring all of those skills and what we’ve learned in our careers to netball courts across the Hunter,” Nat Hilder told News Of The Area. “It’s great to be here today

at Port Stephens Netball Association.” The players also found the experience to be more than worthwhile. “It was great,” participant Athiana Kelly told News of the

Area. “I got to learn some new skills and do some fun drills with my friends, but by the end I was exhausted.” Another participant, Sophie Cieplechowicz, also

got a lot out of the session. “The coaches were lovely,” Sophie told News of the Area. “It was a great start to get ready for the season ahead and even though it was hot, it was fun.”
