INSPIRED by her younger sister, year 8 student Bonnie Cook approached her teachers to raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy within her school community. Bonnie and her teachers came up with a plan to raise money and increase the awareness of Cerebral Palsy in one go, pulling together a school wide crazy hair day and out of uniform day on Tuesday, 20 November. A special assembly was called with guest speakers Rachael and Kate from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. They gave the students and staff an insight into the nature of the condition, and what the Cerebral Palsy Alliance does to help people who live with it. Carols to turn into Christmas Carnival By Kelly O’BRIEN

THE Christmas Spirit is stronger than ever in this year when Christmas Carols expands into fully fledged Christmas Carnivals. Formally known as the Medowie Community Carols, on Friday 7 December the Rotary Williamtown event will be relaunched under the new name, Medowie Christmas Carnival. The Christmas Carnival will feature a range of children’s rides and amusements, carefully curated artisan market stalls, gourmet food vendors, and live music and entertainment. There will also be activities involving local schools, dance studios, community groups, local businesses, Christmas carols, Santa, and much more! Entry is free, courtesy of major sponsors R&R Property and will be held at the Ferodale Sports Complex. Ride packages: Unlimited Rides Passes (valid

The Rotary Club of Williamtown NSW with support from Port Stephens Council have announced that all proceeds from the sale of amusement passes will be donated to Medowie Christian School Parents and Friends Group, Medowie Public School Parents and Citizens Association, and Wirreanda Public School Parents and Citizens Association. These funds will be invested into projects that directly benefit the children at each of these three schools within the Medowie community.

Event spokesperson Lisa Taylor told News of the Area, “In creating Medowie Christmas Carnival we are conscious of creating an event worthy of our community, an event all could not only feel a part of, but also be proud of.” “We want to draw our community together and provide an opportunity for families and friends to meet up together, enjoy the food, amusements, shopping and entertainment, but importantly create some precious memories for our children,” Lisa said.

THE Christmas spirit is starting to take hold around the Bay and the Probus Club of Port Stephens is well and truly getting into the spirit of the Festive Season. Some activity groups within the Club are having their own small end of year celebration but the club held their annual Christmas Nibbles in the Park. 50 members set up shop late afternoon at Bagnalls Beach Reserve trying to avoid

the falling sticks in windy and sunny conditions. Ann Gibson told News Of The Area, “As usual with this happy group, a lot of fun and fellowship was enjoyed while waiting for Santa to put in an appearance.” Most members dressed up in their Christmas finery for the occasion and this made it a very colourful affair. “Santa came striding across the carpark ringing his bell and was warmly greeted by this bunch of “big kids”, she said.

Better Access for Boomerang WALKERS, runners, scooters and cyclists will soon have a new place to explore, with the announcement of a new $600,000 shared pathway network at Boomerang Park, Raymond Terrace. Catherine Cusack MLC last week announced Port Stephens Council had successfully applied for funding from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities

Fund. Deputy Mayor Sarah Smith says the funds will improve accessibility to Raymond Terrace’s regional Park. “Shared pathways are a great way to make our parks more accessible and encourage our residents to get outside and enjoy their beautiful surroundings.” Ms Smith said, “This is a critical piece of the puzzle for Boomerang Park. Over

the past few years, Port Stephens Council made significant investments to create a public space that caters for everyone. “This Grant will help more people to enjoy all of the wonderful new facilities that Boomerang Park has to offer, which is a great result for our community,” she said. The Grant will fund a new 2.5 metre wide shared pathway network throughout Boomerang Park, as well as solar lighting, entry signage, landscaping and bike racks.

SEAHAM may be a little town, but when it comes to community events they certainly know how to put on a show for all the family to enjoy. Saturday, 8 December will see the return of the immensely popular Carols in Seaham Park. Following the undeniable success of last year’s Carols, the Raymond Terrace Lions Club, together with representative from the

Seaham Park Committee, Seaham Rural Fire, Seaham Scouts, and other community members will again host this fun family friendly event. After receiving a Cultural Grant from the Port Stephens Council the Raymond Terrace Lions Club has enhanced the event this year with the addition of a jumping castle and professional performers. Mr Bob Findley Chair of the Seaham Carols committee said, “There will be no shortage of entertainment, food, and

music for all the family beginning at 5:30pm.” The Carols will begin at 7:00pm, and of course a very special visitor in a big red coat and shiny black boots. This is a special evening for all members of the Seaham community and surrounding areas to relax and unwind. Be sure to bring your picnic rug, chairs, torches and insect repellent to the Seaham Park on Warren Road, Seaham for this free community event.

Funds raised from sales and money collected in the donation bucket will primarily going toward Lions support of drought relief in the Hunter. Mr Findley told News Of The Area, “The local Scouts, RFS and the Seaham Park committee will also benefit from the money raised at this year’s Carols.” If you require any further information about this event please contact Bob Findley on 0417 398 611.

The fire didn’t run up the trunks very much because of the lack of fuel,” she said. Tim, a former volunteer firefighter said, “If those two earlier fires hadn’t happened, the fuel overload would have been catastrophic. Panel Driving Progress AFTER an extensive Expression of Interest process, 14 community members have been selected to play an active role in driving progress in Raymond Terrace, Heatherbrae, Medowie and Nelson Bay. Three Implementation Panels have been created to drive progress in each town centre, with residents and local business members representing the community. The panels will meet quarterly and will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of strategies for these key growth areas and will keep Council accountable to the community. Steve Peart, Council’s Strategy and Environment Section Manager, says the panels are a great way to ensure the actions identified in strategies are put into practice. “Each of these town centres has been identified by the NSW government as being important for the growth of Greater Newcastle and the Hunter Region.” “We don’t write strategies so they can sit on a shelf. It’s important that the key actions identified for our town centres are completed so that we can keep our towns progressing and meet the needs of our growing communities,” said Mr Peart. “It was great to see so many people put their hand up to take part in panels for Medowie, Nelson Bay, Raymond Terrace and Heatherbrae.” “We’ve been able to select a broad range of passionate community members including residents and business representatives who want to see their town progress. It’s now time to get to work on implementing these town strategies,” he said. The Implementation Panels were endorsed by Council on Tuesday 27 November and include the following community representatives: Medowie Planning Strategy Implementation Panel • Robert Dein (Business) • Ben Niland (Business) • Heather Sharp (Resident) • Geoffrey Voigt (Resident)

By Kelly O’BRIEN

RACHAEL Vaughan has made the difficult decision to leave her role as a reporter for News Of The Area. She has spent the past 122 weeks, or editions in reporter terms, covering every story type the area had available. Rachael is now well known throughout the Port Stephens community. Ms Vaughan said, “The best part about reporting has been the extra connections I made in the community.” “The paper has helped me to connect to so many more community groups and residents,” Rachael said. When asked what her favourite story was she said, “I do have a soft spot for the stories of our young people doing great things.” “They are the future of Port Stephens, and our future is looking bright with all the wonderful things I’ve been able to report on that involve them.”

Rachael has accepted a position working behind the scenes in Kate Washington MP’s office. Ms Vaughan said she will assist Kate with all the work that she does within the community and in State Parliament. Rachael wishes to Thank the community for their stories and sharing some

really special moments with her. Rachael said, “I look forward to still following the News Of The Area closely, and hope the community continues to support the newspaper.” “It is such a special publication, and its success relies on our beautiful community.”

q ‘The last hurrah’ - NOTA reporters Rachael Vaughan and Heather Sharp accepting a thank you for covering the work of the recent ‘Build for a Cure’ house.

YOU see, the problem here is that you think students should be learning, when they have been learning – they’ve been learning about the science of climate change. These young people, our future leaders, have chosen to take notice of the scientific community instead of talk-back radio hosts and greedy corporate polluters. And it is their future to protect, Mrs JU. Many people are feeling a huge sense of despair lately regarding the inherent political apathy and downright disregard of our environment, so it is great to see that the upcoming generation are being innovative activists. They’re not putting their head in the sand, or coming up with baseless Twitter comments (cue the American President who blamed the Chinese for creating global warming as a hoax, confused climate change with the weather, and most recently only read part of his own government’s climate change report, stating that he doesn’t believe climate change has any economic impact). Meanwhile, our young people are displaying a level of understanding and intellectual maturity at odds with those running the joint. Greta Thunberg from Sweden, who is just 15, is striking because she feels it is the only option left: ‘What is the point of learning facts,’ she asks, ‘when the most important facts given by the finest scientists are ignored by our politicians.’ It seems an obvious point, but that lack of clarity is missing from our decisionmakers, perhaps because many of them won’t be around to see the repercussions of their inaction. Radical problems need radical solutions, Mrs JU. If striking is what it takes, then so be it. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Rally against Sand Mine Hopping Mad PORT Stephens MP Kate Washington has encouraged local residents to make their voices heard on a proposed new sand mine in Bobs Farm. Many residents have opposed the proposal since it was first raised in 2014, and have concerns about the impact of the proposed mine. A small country school, Bobs Farm Public School is central to the community and recently celebrated 100 years of public education. Ms Washington told News Of The Area if the sand mind was approved, it would allow an additional 180 trucks a day onto Nelson Bay Road. “The people of Port Stephens do not want another 180 trucks pouring onto Nelson Bay Road every day, or more habitat being destroyed, or more threats to the ground water and air quality.”

INCREASED night time activity has come to the attention of local residents and farmers. Notable soil erosion and destruction of crops has become a serious problem for local producers. There is growing concern around the significant increase in rabbit population throughout Port Stephens. Resident Bob Jones felt compelled to write a letter to Councillor Chris Doohan about the issue saying he believes that this is the worst he has ever seen it. Councillor Doohan took it upon himself to investigate these concerns. Taking his spotlight out and around Medowie on Thursday evening 30 November through the various areas of concern and again the following morning before work. “It has to be said that I agree 100% with the

Councillor Doohan said, I was surprised to find the people concerned about this issue assumed someone else was doing something about it, when in actual fact no one seems to have reported the situation at all.” Placing trust in the Port Stephens Council Invasive Species Team, Councillor Doohan submitted an official request on behalf of the community to have this issue attended to as a matter of urgency. Councillor Doohan told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Council have already taken action following my email on Friday which is great to hear.” If you or anyone you know are having issues with the rabbits, you are encouraged to report it to Council. Reports will help the council staff know where the important areas are to focus on.

Cooler Classrooms By Marian SAMPSON

IN a $500 Million Dollar NSW Government funded program students are set to work in cooler conditions at school. Tomaree High, Tomaree Public and Shoal Bay Public are also included in the first funding round of the Cooler Classrooms program. The program involves not just air-conditioning. It is an integrated program including looking at solar to offset cost where possible and ensuring the system is automated- meaning that it will sense when the air conditioning is needed, alerting the teacher to open a window to enable fresh air when needed and

ensuring units turn off at the end of the school day to avoid waste. Tomaree High School Principal Sue Xenos told News Of The Area, “Naturally we are very excited to be part of round 1 and hope that we will see the program roll out early next year, It is a very welcome addition for our students.” NSW Education Minister Mr Rob Stokes said the NSW Government’s Cooler Classrooms program was both economically and environmentally sustainable. “We’re installing solar panels and ‘smart systems’ alongside the air conditioning units, so

schools can offset their additional energy use and efficiently heat and cool their schools,” he said. In addition to the hundreds of schools benefiting under the Cooler Classrooms program, air conditioning will be delivered in all new and upgraded schools under the Government’s record $6 billion school building program over the next four years. Liberal Candidate for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “I would really love to see all our schools air conditioned and encourage them all to apply in the next round of funding.”

Making History

By Kelly O’BRIEN

HISTORY will be made on 15 December in Medowie. Phil Downey and his wife Gwen were residents of Medowie for decades, residing at 46 Ferodale Road. They watched the town thrive and grow into the bustling community it is today. In July 2017 Phil and his wife Gwen were in a terrible car accident. Phil sustained injuries but fortunately survived. Sadly Gwen passed away as the result of the accident. Gwen was a beloved member of Coles Medowie and the entire local community. After almost fifty years Phil Downey, with the support of beloved children and family, Phil had decided to move to a more peaceful location in Stroud. Phil and Gwen’s 3.6 acre home will go up for auction on 15 December at 11am. At the auction of this beautiful home there will be a celebrity touch to this day with Cooley

Auctions top auctioneer Craig Rosevear leading the day. Craig is also famous for being part of the Screaming Jets, Rosie’s School of Rock Newcastle, radio and television work with Location Lifestyle Living. Craig told News of the Area, “I am thrilled to be the auctioneer for this historic sale.”

“This is a once in a generation opportunity and I’m looking forward to selling it under the hammer.” The whole community is invited to be part of making Medowie history with a sausage sizzle and coffee available from 9.30am and auction at 11am.

Santa Photo Fundraiser

By Kelly O’BRIEN

THE Rotary Club of Williamtown is back this year for their Santa photo fundraiser. The fundraising initiative has been operating locally since 2012. This year all proceeds will go towards the Rotarians Against Malaria. Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) is a volunteer-run organisation who are working to eliminate malaria. Fifteen years ago, malaria killed a child every 30 seconds. As a result of Rotary’s efforts, deaths from malaria have fallen by 60 percent. RAM are aiming to reduce malaria cases and deaths by a further 90 percent by 2030. Since 2012, the jolly old man has had the pleasure of meeting family members of all walks of life.

These have included dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and even a duck, all photographed with their human families. The Rotartarian Santa, Dr Rodney Starr, is a local semi retired Veterinarian. Judy McGowan the project organiser said, “Many of the same kids come each year and the only Santa they know is this one.” “We love to see the joy it brings to families.” The photographer is Aaron McGowan, who is an active member of The Rotary Club of Maitland and spent his childhood in Port Stephens. Both Santa and Aaron take the time to ensure that everyone gets to take home a wonderful memory to cherish. The 2018 Santa Photo sittings will be held at The Little Pantry Co. Cafe opposite Coles,

Hope for Volunteers By Kelly O’BRIEN

CENTRE for Hope has been running the Tilligerry Drop In on Tuesday and Fridays afternoons since April in Tanilba Bay. They provide a place for young people age 6 to 16 to enjoy indoor and outdoor activities in a safe space. Social work students from the University of Newcastle have developed a program specially designed for the Centre and their young attendees. This program will be delivered through the January school holidays. Wheels for Hope program is an additional initiative the Centre

plans to establish. It is designed to teach young people how to build and maintain bicycles. The program will be run out of The Drop In as well as in partnership with Hunter River High. The Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation has donated money to organise a mobile workshop for Wheels for Hope. The Tilligerry Drop In coordinator Jamie Brewster told News of the Area, “We have had some amazing support from local businesses and organisations.” “It is amazing to have such great locals giving a hand for the

young people of Tilligerry.” TOMRA return and Earn scheme has nominated Centre For Hope as the local Charity for the Coles Return point at Tanilba Bay between 28 November and 28 February 2019. All money raised will go directly to run The Drop In. With their ever increasing popularity in the area, Centre for Hope is looking for more volunteers to be a part of the team at the Tilligerry drop. Volunteers are needed to help deliver the new programs as well a Homework Centre for primary school children in the new school year.

LEGO is not just a toy for young children to play with; the small bricks are also an important educational resource. The students from Raymond Terrace scored 3rd highest on the points board for coding their EV3 robots. The purpose of the competition is to inspire students to keep learning STEM subjects, that is science, technology, engineering, and maths. Wild Weather By: Margie TIERNEY

WHILE Sydney’s weather was dubbed ‘Wild Wednesday’ last week, the Myall didn’t escape unscathed. Nearly 50 millimetres of rain fell on the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest towns in less than 12 hours last Wednesday. Wind gusts of nearly 60 kilometres an hour also brought down a number of trees and plenty of branches,

causing some minor damage. The storm came through in two fronts, dark clouds turning day to night in both the morning and afternoon. Tourists to the area tried to make the most of the brief respite around lunchtime. “We grabbed our beach gear and headed to Jimmy’s Beach, but sadly a massive black cloud came in from across the Bay, making our stay short lived,” tourist Liz Cullen said.

media@newsofthearea.com.au Temperatures dropped to to around 16 degrees making it feel more like Winter than Spring. In Sydney, the cleanup continues after Wednesday’s wild weather which claimed three lives and left a damage bill of at least $10 million. There was an upside to the storm system, with local photographers managing to capture some magnificent shots. Louise Richards used the backdrop of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Club to show off the storm in all its treacherous glory.

Dancers Light Up The Stage By Kelly O’BRIEN

AFTER a long year of lessons and a very successful year of competitions Debbie Rae Dance Studio has wrapped up 2018 with a stunning concert featuring local dance stars. Dancers of all ages took to the stage in the Griffith Duncan Theatre at the University of Newcastle on Saturday 1 December in front of a packed crowd of family, friends, and community members. They proudly demonstrated the fruits of their hard work and dedication to training for all to admire. This year featured daring cheer routines, elegant ballet, inspiration contemporary, and hip hop routines oozing with attitude.
