Book Week across Port Stephens By Rachael VAUGHAN

SCHOOLS across Port Stephens were overflowing with creativity this week, celebrating the annual Book Week, supported nationally by The Children’s Book Council of Australia. Every year, the Children’s Book Council unites children, schools, and libraries in their love for books.

Schools across Port Stephens joined in the celebrations, hosting book parades, ‘rug and read’ activities and book fairs. This year’s theme for book week was ‘Find your treasure’. Local schools got behind the theme, with many pirates and the like being spotted. Worthy of particular mention is the the staff

body at Wirreanda Public School, who had their entire teaching and non-teaching staff list dressed up as pirates. Raymond Terrace resident and local librarian, Elissa Brown, told News Of The Area, “Last week joined children and books together to celebrate Book Week

Little Drought Helpers

media@newsofthearea.com.au

By Rachael VAUGHAN

YOU are never too little to lend a helping hand. Preschools across Port Stephens have shown first hand how true this is, by pitching in and doing their bit to contribute to the plight of the drought stricken Farmers. Director of Raymond Terrace Community Preschool, Linda Mossmand, told News Of The Area, “With the entire state of New South Wales now drought affected, we wanted to get our Preschool community together and do our bit to help. “Over three days, families and staff donated gold coins, which the children placed onto drawn picture outlines, creating our own golden cow, sheep and hay bale.” “Some of the children and staff also dressed up for the occasion in flannelette shirts, cowboy hats, cowgirl boots, and even a cow onesie,” she said. The children learnt that the drought means there hasn’t been any rain on the farms, and that without water for the grass to grow, the animals are hungry and sick. q

Linda said, “We spoke to them about the money being given to the farmers so they could buy hay for their animals to eat,” “As well as teaching children about the effects of drought, we wanted to instil in them the importance of thinking about others in their community and working together to help others in times of need and hardship.” Raymond Terrace

Community Preschool proudly raised $670, which will be donated to Rural Aid’s Buy a Bale drought appeal campaign. Medowie Community Preschool conducted a similar fundraiser, and had two special visitors to help them

raise money and awareness. Seth and Degan impressed the community of Medowie when they collected up all their pocket money and savings, and donated it all to the Medowie Bale Out The Drought fundraised. The two boys went along

to their old preschool to visit their teachers and chat with the young preschoolers about it is important to help the farmers and collect money. The future of Port Stephens is strong with these young ones.

THE new incoming executive of ‘Tilligerry Habitat’ has settled in and promises a fresh, more open approach with Public Interaction given top priority. President elect Dorothea Willeys said that the volunteers were currently working on new plantings of vibrant native vegetation near the entrance to make the place more welcoming to visitors. “Of course, the main drawcard is the free ranging koalas which can be spotted from our boardwalks and nature trails,” she said. “At the moment there are four in residence plus many other native animals, birds and a wide variety of flora,” Ms Willeys said, “We also have literature and photographic displays

in our eco friendly main building.” ‘The Habitat’ has a native plant nursery which has supplied some 3,000 food trees to Port Stephens Koalas. It is open from 9am to 3pm every day and their verandah cafe from 9am to 2pm on the fourth Sunday

of the month. The Jimienez family was thrilled with their first sighting of a wild koala in ‘The Habitat’. They also got a taste of Mother Nature’s full fury when they were stopped by a roadblock at the Golf Club by a bushfire.

Lights On. Slow to 40 AS summer nears, and we inevitably see an increase in emergency vehicles on the road, a new road rule has been created regarding passing stationary emergency vehicles that is about to come into effect. The new rules requires motorists to slow down to 40km/h when passing these stationary vehicles with their lights turned on, and goes into effect on 1 September. The new rule also requires motorists to give way to any

person on foot in the immediate area of the emergency vehicle. Motorists should not increase their speed until they are a safe distance past the vehicle, so as not to cause a danger to anyone in the vicinity. The NSW Government will monitor the safety and traffic impacts of the rule over a 12-month trial period in consultation with NSW Police, emergency service organisations and other stakeholders.

The rule applies to vehicles travelling in both directions, unless the road is divided by a median strip Motorists who do not comply with the rule will face a $448 fine and three demerit points. Captain Dennis Peters, of Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue NSW, told News Of The Area, “We hope to get as much space as we can, to get the job done without having any more injuries to emergency service workers or the public.” “These rules will give all emergency workers, including our Fire & Rescue NSW personnel, extra protection, and confidence that they can go to work and at the end of the day, get home safely to their families.”

Premier Pulls Into Port

By Marian SAMPSON

GLADYS Berejiklian. Premier of NSW attended a NSW Liberal Party Conference in the Bay over the weekend. The highlight for the visit to the area was the opening of the brand new $700,000 Fingal Bay Rural Fire Station has been officially opened by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, providing

firefighters with modern facilities to serve and protect the local community. Funded by the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and constructed by Port Stephens Council, the station provides the local Rural Fire Service with a welcome upgrade to their facilities. Cameron Donaldson, Council’s Emergency Management Coordinator,

says the new fire station is a great boost for the community of Fingal Bay. “The Rural Fire Service plays a key role in keeping our community safe – whether it’s fighting bushfires, responding to emergency incidents, or supporting the community during times of disaster,” Mr Donaldson said. The Premier was also a guest speaker at one of Port

Stephens regular Business Leaders Lunches. Also in town for the conference and outlining the future of health at Tomaree Hospital was NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard who believes that the new HealthOne will be a onestop health facility bringing together GPs with other health professionals in multidisciplinary teams all

under the one roof. “With the tender for HealthOne out, we expect the main construction tender will be awarded in October with work to start shortly after that,” he said. The purpose-built facility will have one entrance and one reception for all the health services delivered on site making it easier for people to navigate.

The new HealthOne building will deliver services that are tailored to Tomaree Peninsula residents including areas for mental health consultations, increased imaging, children and family care, and oral health services. Plans of the HealthOne development are on display at Tomaree Hospital, Trevally Street Nelson Bay.

What jobs should I complete for a Spring Sale? BF Raymond Terrace

GREAT Question. Generally Spring gives us an opportunity to joosh the house out of any winter doldrums. Whether you’re already on the market or just about to list it for sale here are a few tips I suggest to make it market ready and achieve more dollars in your pocket. Open up and air the home out getting rid of any stale winter mouldy odours. Of course if you do have mould remove it with a good clean. Cobweb & dust walls, vents, ceiling fans, wood fire areas. Deep clean your carpets & rugs, wash and air out soft furnishings & bed linen including pillows. Bring your outdoor furniture back into the picture with a good clean & repairs if required. Or maybe you need to ditch the old and revamp with something new! Mulch the garden beds giving them a low maintenance, tidy appearance. De-clutter garden ornaments. Too many just look old fashioned. Go for simple & stylish garden art instead. Remove any winter casualties; dead plants need to be composted or binned. Once completed with your spring makeover have fresh professional photography taken including your outdoor spaces and gardens. Hope this helps. Denise

Dear Jasminda,

I’ve noticed a lot of people in the local supermarket with quite overwhelming body odour. I’ve also noticed a lot of swearing, with young mums saying things like ‘crap’. What is the world coming to? Mrs UL, Raymond Terrace

Dear Mrs UL,

Gillespie: I’m not required Dear News Of The Area,

THIS week I was advised that I would not be required in the new Morrison Ministry. Since the 2016 election, I have served as an Assistant Minister in the Turnbull Ministry in the portfolios of Rural Health, Health and Children and Families. I have very much enjoyed the work I have been able to do in these portfolios, particularly in the Health portfolio where I was able to put together a number

of important initiatives in the Health Workforce space, that will have long lasting benefits to health delivery in regional Australia in the years ahead. In the Children and Families portfolio, our work in implementing the 3rd action plan for the protection of Australia’s Children, the development of a fourth action plan and securing further progress on permanency and adoption with my State and Territory counterparts have been highlights, as well as the work we have been doing in

the Settlement Services space to improve integration among our humanitarian entrants. In moving on to a new chapter in this Parliament, I am very focused on continuing to deliver for our community. At present, I’m working on a Vision 2030 Plan for our electorate and I’m looking forward to seeing many more surveys come in over the coming weeks as we take many of your ideas forward. POLICE REPORT

Car Collision Kills Man A MAN died in a crash at Raymond Terrace over the weekend. At around 6.30pm on Sunday 26 August, a Holden sedan was travelling south on Adelaide Street, when it collided with a northbound

Toyota four-wheel-drive. The driver of the Holden, a 35-year-old man, was trapped in the wreckage before being freed and taken to John Hunter Hospital, however, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The 39-year-old female driver of the Toyota, and her teenage passenger, were treated for shock and taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests. Police are conducting inquiries into the incident.

WE have two problems here and one seems a lot easier to deal with than the other. If ‘crap’ is the most offensive thing these mums are saying, I wouldn’t be heading along the path of complete moral panic at this stage. In the upward spiral of bad language, ‘crap’ is probably at the bottom end of the spectrum along with ‘drat’ or ‘dang’ or ‘darn’. My mother would always say ‘sugar’, which was such a sweet and innocent expression of agitation, that it was hardly worth the effort. I think this one is a first-world problem that you should just let go of. The next issue, body odour, is one of those things that I guess we have all experienced from time to time. I used to have a boxing partner at the gym and he didn’t need to give me an uppercut or a left jab to wind me, his odour was enough to knock me out in the first round. Morning breath is another problem. One of my friends had this issue with her husband and found it very hard to be amorous when his breath was so foul she wondered if he had licked the bottom layer of the budgie cage during the night. You can, of course, leave subtle hints, like tongue scrapers and mouth wash and heavy duty deodorant, but not with complete strangers in the supermarket. Sweat is virtually odourless, so it is the buildup of bacteria that is causing the revolting smell. You could hold a hankie infused with lavender or eucalyptus to your nose and just allow your sweet scent to infuse the supermarket, Mrs UL. Or you could make little hygiene packs, and hand them out at the entrance. I think people would appreciate receiving something other than useless plastic groceries.

Carpe diem, Jasminda

Girls hit the Birthday jackpot By David & Rhona BIRSS

NELSON Bay Golf Club Results 19th to 25th August 2018:

Sunday saw the celebrations for the 1st Anniversary of the opening of the new ClubHouse. The main golf event for the day was a 4 Person Ambrose. The celebrations continued after the game with finger food provided by the Club. Dave Flatt, Club Captain and Trevor Harrison the General Manager presented the prizes to the place-getters. The Winners with a very commendable score of 51.5 was all the more remarkable given they are a team from the Club’s office and they have all relatively recently taken-up golf. Go the Girls. Highlight of the week: In Tuesday’s Ladies monthly Medal Round, Marg Reimer scored a highly commendable 96 to take out Gross Winner of Div 2. breaking distance. And brought home the last leg of the 4 x 100m relay for a second place for her Medowie Christian School. But wait there’s more. First in discus, third in shotput and Overall Age Champion. “It’s been a lot of hard work to get to this level and I want to thank my coaches for all their help.” Keira said. There’s no rest for Keira. She’s now in training ahead of more NSW State events being held in Sydney throughout September.
