at 43 metres tall and is formally recognised as Australia’s largest Norfolk Island pine. But come December, the pine becomes the focal point for Christmas celebrations and is adorned with lights in a tradition that has been upheld since 1961. The Norfolk Island pine tree in Apex Park, Nelson Bay will also have its lights switched on tomorrow. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says Council is proud to play a part in this annual tradition. “It certainly wouldn’t be Christmas without the lighting of the trees! We’re extremely lucky to have such beautiful tall trees in both Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay, and when the lights are switched on, they become a symbol of the Christmas spirit here in these communities,” Mayor Palmer said. Mayor Palmer says that the lights can be seen from several kilometres away once illuminated. “I’m told the Raymond Terrace tree is in the running for the tallest Christmas tree in the southern hemisphere, so it’s no surprise that it can be seen from the top of the Stockton Bridge when it’s lit up,” he said. Greg Kable, Council’s Facilities and Services Group Manager, says a lot of hard work goes into decorating the towering Norfolk Island pines. “With the help of Dwayne Hopper, or ‘Hopper the Lopper’ as he’s affectionately known, our Port Stephens Council electricians scale the tree to install the lights,” he said. “It’s a lot more involved than lighting a regular Christmas tree through. The lights stretch out half a kilometre and literally weigh a tonne,” he said.

The Giving Tree WIN: Four Huge Events

By Rachael VAUGHAN YOUTH Pastor Connor Hall from the Salvation Army at Raymond Terrace attended Irrawang High School this week to officially launch their ‘Giving Tree’. This wonderful initiative was launched by Connor, with assistance from School Leaders Georgia Sulis and Kyah Cox. The school has put a call out for non perishable items that can be used for food hampers for families the Salvation Army will be helping at Christmas Time, School leader Georgia Sulis told News Of The Area,

“We are looking for items such as non perishable food items, personal care items and toys both new and second hand ones in good condition.” Youth Pastor Connor Hall commented, “These donations, along with hundreds of others, will be given as hampers to around 250 local families this year, up from 180 last year.” “We are so grateful to school and community groups who get on board and help us achieve this.” For every donation to the Irrawang Giving Tree, a raffle ticket will be given out by the front office staff at

Irrawang High School. For example, five tins of baked beans will earn the person donating five raffle tickets. Some great examples of items to donate include, Pasta, rice, canned vegetables, baked beans, peanut butter, vegemite, nuts, trail mix, diced tomatoes, sauces, flour, cooking oils, canned fruit, long life milk, and canned protein food like tuna, salmon, chicken and beef stews. The donations will be collected by the Salvation Army from Irrawang High School on 13 December. q

I’ve been trying to think of an ideal present for my children’s teacher. Any ideas? Mrs MM, Anna Bay Dear Ms MM, THE end-of-year festivities at schools throughout the region are an absolute joy for parents. They start with a note about buying a secret Santa gift for a kid you’ve never met (present number one) and regress from there. There’s the ‘dress up as your favourite Christmas Carol’ and bring a gold coin event (a three-hour Kmart visit before you end up sending your child in a green T-shirt with baubles pinned to every inch of fabric because his “branches green delight us”. Then add 200 candy canes since Claudette wants to improve her social status by giving every kid in primary school a festive gift. Behold the end-of-year presentation where you get to see Jemima ChaseAugenstino receive the Academic Award for the fifth year in a row, while your little Benny gets the ‘Improved Anger Management’ certificate and Mrs Chase-Augenstino smiles at you like the cat that ate the cream bun and says, “Oh, what a lovely surprise for both of us.” As someone who has many friends and relatives in the profession (bless their little cotton socks full of resilience and dedication), let me just tell you what they don’t want this year, in no particular order: a signed copy of The Complete Burke’s Backyard. A Donald Trump doll that says, “It’s fake news; Hillary did it; I will build a great wall” and various other gems when you pat his toupee. A mug that has been printed with a photo of your child (these gifts can be very off-putting to the teacher’s actual children when they visit on Christmas Day). Ten-year-old resource books that you found in your attic that you feel will be handy in the classroom (they won’t be). $100 in a brown paper bag in exchange for next year’s Academic Award for little Benny (teachers have strict moral codes that can’t be cracked). Finally, anything that they will have difficulty fitting in their car boot on the last day of school (though it is possibly fair payback for all the dog-eared books, paintings, half-chewed erasers, broken pencils and various other items that your child brings home from school on their last day). You know, Mrs MM, you really can’t go wrong with a gift voucher and a heartfelt message from your child on a handmade card. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Cheer Champ Georgia By Rachael VAUGHAN

CHEER Champ Georgia Almond has added some more awards to her ever growing list of achievements in her chosen sport of Cheerleading. The year eight student from Irrawang High School just returned from the National Dance and Cheer Competition held in Melbourne last week. The competition saw over 10,000 athletes from 1400 teams across Australia compete in Dance and Cheer over three solid days of competition. A fourth day was also held for the ‘Pinnacle Championships’. Georgia was fortunate enough to be asked to compete in the invitation only Pinnacle

Championships, which sees the best of the best go head to head. Her results at Nationals included two National Titles for Lyrical and Jazz in the dance section, and two National Titles for Level 2 Senior and Level 2 Open in Cheer. Georgia also achieve National Grand Champion in Level 2. In the Pinnacle Championships, she completed in various sections, and came away with a first in cheer, and a third in cheer. Georgia’s mother Julie Almond told News Of The Area, “It’s nice to know the hard work, dedication and commitment her and the team have shown can turn into great

results on the floor.” “What was more important was the unsolicited feedback from competitors and parents about the sportsmanship and humility that MCPD showed regardless of how they performed as a team.” “We’re so proud of her,” she said. Georgia has been training in Cheerleading for four years, and clearly has a great passion and talent for her chosen career. Georgia and her team at MC Planet Dance have several exciting overseas trips and competitions coming up. in charge of the A-Grade side with Craig Murray coaching the second-tier team and Amy Walker calling the shots for the Raymond Terrace Ravens Ladies League Tag squad. However, a lack of sponsorship threatens to affect the hopes and plans for the Magpies of attaining a Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League premiership before the season even begins.

Jeremy Cusack, the licensee of the Lakeside Tavern, told News of the Area, “We really need this new club to be supported by the local community.” “The Lakeside Tavern is very excited to be a major sponsor, but even more support is needed.” ‘We’re putting the challenge out there to get other businesses on board to

join us and support the local footy,” he said. New Magpies president Ben Callen from Medowie Meats echoes Cusack’s sentiment. “It’s an exciting period for the club and we have big things planned for the year.” “But at the end of the day, we just want the Club to be family oriented.” “We want all the wives,

husbands, partners and kids to be involved, but then we also need the commercial support of local businesses to help us pull this off.” Like all grassroots sports clubs, local financial support is vital for clubs to survive.
