By Rachael VAUGHAN

IT is a commonly discussed point by parents in Medowie and Raymond Terrace that they wish there were more playgrounds in the area, in particular gated areas for children to play safely away from the road. As the school holidays rapidly approach, signalling the end of term one, Wirreanda Public School’s Principal, Ms Philippa Young, shared some exciting news with News Of The Area. Wirreanda Public School in Medowie and Hunter River High School in Heatherbrae have successfully applied to be a part of a new ‘Share our

Space’ program, allowing the schools to make their facilities available to the community during the April school holidays. For Wirreanda, this means the NOLA, MPC COLA, Bottom Field and Primary equipment will be open from 8am until 6pm, seven days a week, from 16 April 2018 to 27 April 2018. Bunting will be strung to separate the play areas from school buildings, which will be out of bounds. Signage will be placed at the entrances to notify the times of access, and nonpermitted activities Cleaners will arrive at 7am to open the gates and

Duruga Aboriginal Corporation By Rachael VAUGHAN

PETER Kafer has not been relaxing since he finished up as one of our Port Stephens Councillors last year. He has been busy launching the very first Aboriginal Corporation to be based in Raymond Terrace for training. Peter started the process last July, and obtained the approval Certificate of Registration from the office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations in late december. The corporation is named Duruga Aboriginal

Corporation, whose main service is to provide a job ready training organisation for all local people, especially those who do not have transport to attend other similar training companies who traditionally have only offered their services/ courses in Newcastle, Maitland, Charlestown and Cardiff. Duruga have partnered with several registered training organisations who will provide courses. Peter Kafer told News Of The Area, “Our prime focus is getting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

Peter said, “Other courses which will be included in scope soon, relating to Aged Care and also Disability Services as we have just signed on a very experienced Registered Nurse to deliver both these and we are looking to include courses in Cleaning Operations as well in near future.” “Our next offering of job ready courses include two courses both being run on 1 May - Certificate 4 in Leadership & Management and a set of related courses/ certificates in White Card, First Aid, Working at Heights and Working Confined Spaces.” Paul Lewis is the contact person for all course enrolments. Paul is being inundated with enquiries for the Certificate 4, which is being offered under Smart and Skilled Training, and will gladly take more. Paul ran several successful job ready courses at Kuppoondee in Raymond Terrace when it was open several years ago. Paul can be contacted on 0411433435.

playgrounds at Wirreanda will be the perfect spot for children to meet and play safely during the school holidays. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said “This is great news

for families in the Hunter as it not only will give parents and children access to more open green space, but also provide them with more options for school holiday activities.” This trial program has the potential to be a wonderful

opportunity for Medowie’s young people during school breaks, and it is hoped that all residents will treat the school grounds with respect during this time, to ensure that this opportunity is offered to Port Stephens Schools again.

By Rachael VAUGHAN IRRAWANG High School had a visually colourful group raising awareness at school, and in the community, this week for a very special cause. Students in the Support Classes at Irrawang wanted to participate in the month of awareness and acceptance for people with Autism. They decided to hold a ‘Walk for Autism Week’ at the school to raise funds, awareness and support. The theme for Autism acceptance month for 2018 is “Another step towards a world where no-one on the autism spectrum is left behind”. The students in the support classes wholeheartedly embraced this message, and did a

wonderful job raising awareness this week. Students and staff participating in the weeklong event donned bright green shirts, and pledged to walk 10,000 steps for seven days. Along the way, they sold raffled tickets for 50 cents each or 3 for $1 to supporters. School representative Lue Fagan told News Of The Area, “It was a lovely idea the students and staff came up with, raise awareness and acceptance for such a special cause.” “It was impossible to miss the lime green t-shirts and the big smiles on the faces of this wonderful group.” “Irrawang High School, and the greater community, is so proud of their efforts,”
