Lemon Tree Passage Road was closed on and off for the entire weekend, as Brigades and fire services from across the Hunter and Port Stephens joined the fire front. A weekend that has left all in Port Stephens wondering what summer conditions will bring up.

Lions $12K Upgrade At Bob Cairns Reserve SERVICE to the community is the natural inclination of the members of The Lions Club of Soldiers Point who have generously donated $12,000 towards the revitalisation of Bob Cairns Reserve, at Salamander Bay, funding upgrades to the park and its amenities. A further $2000 will be donated for the signage for the park by the Club. It took this small determined group of 13 hard working members two years to raise the funds for the work at the Reserve, which formed their Centenary Project for Lions Australia. Mayor Ryan Palmer, said, “The Lions Club of Soldiers Point are active members of our community who take pride in where we live and work tirelessly to support our
local community.” Works are underway, and the new accessible amenities block is a great improvement to the Reserve. The Lions Club of Soldiers Point have been committed to seeing the Reserve improve and it’s now thanks to their efforts it offers wonderful picnic tables and the foreshore is protected with new fencing on the dunes. “I want to thank all of the Soldiers Point Lions volunteers for their generous donation and for all their hard work over the years not just on this park, but for our whole community,” he said. Christine Lilly told News Of The Area, “We have been part of this community for 40 years, and have worked tirelessly to make Port Stephens a better place.” The Lions Club raises
funds through Bus Shelter Advertising, sausage sizzles and other activities. Last weekend they held a special BBQ to raise funds for the drought stricken farmers. The $2500 proceeds of the BBQ will be distributed as feed for farmers, their stock and water, seeing this Group’s donations total over $3000 for the farmers already. Christine Lilly of the Soldiers Point Lions Club told News Of The Area, “10,000 litres of water should last most farms close to 6 months and we are praying for rain in the meantime!” The Club welcomes anyone who is committed to the community and would like to make a difference whether it is to a park or members of the community like our farmers who are in need. The volunteer efforts Lions Club also go beyond

the shopping district of Anna Bay is rough and residents feel that it is dangerous. The residents have been busy with a petition to get a footpath which has already been signed by over 150 people all to gain a shared pathway allowing for safe access for pedestrians in the area. Councillor Sarah Smith told News Of The Area, “That the issue of a footpath is separate to the defunct development, there is nothing stopping the developer from starting work” The footpath for Gan Gan Road is on Council’s
‘Forward Work’ list but remains unfunded at this stage. “This footpath is one example of the projects to be brought forward for completion if the Special Rate Variation (SRV) which Council is seeking were to occur.” The SRV will put projects on the timetable and deliver for the community, at the end of the SRV period the rates go back to rate pegging,” she said. The residents also feel that given the demographics of the residents in the area that a bus shelter with seats at Anna Bay bus stops would allow for greater accessibility for residents.

Bobs Farm Centenary By Rachael VAUGHAN
BOBS Farm Public School is in planning mode, with an exciting event coming up on the School calendar. September 21 will see the school celebrate their centenary as a school, providing quality education to Bobs Farm for 100 years. Schooling was established in Bobs Farm in 1918 when the first enrolments were accepted on the 22nd July of that year. The original building, situated at Tolimba (1901 -
13), on the Cabbage Tree Road between Williamtown and Tomago, had been dismantled, rafted down Tilligerry Creek and up along the drains, hauled by bullock power to the present site and re-erected. It was known as the Provisional School of Lower Anna Bay until September 1919, when its name was changed to Bobs Farm - at about the same time as the Post Office was opened near Upton’s store, which no longer exists. q Sanjex Seratti with his unicycle at Bobs Farm Public School as they prepare for their centenary celebrations.
It became a Public School in January, 1932. Unfortunately the building fell victim to white ants and was replaced by the present building, which was erected in 1928. The School have big plans for the special day, with gates opening at 4:30pm for an afternoon and evening of celebrations. From 4:30pm there will be a memorabilia display, afternoon tea and sales of their self made history book, as well as a raffle and barbecue. At 5:15pm, guests will watch the Welcome to Country, Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony, Principal’s address and visitors speeches, before celebrating together at an old fashioned bush dance at 6:30pm. Tickets are only $5 per person, or $20 for a family, and all families past and present, as well as community members, are welcome to attend.

Williamtown Preschool to close
By Rachael VAUGHAN
FAMILIES and staff of Williamtown Preschool, located currently in Raymond Terrace were left reeling this week with the decision by Defence to withdraw its support for the service. Currently the Preschool is run, along with a daycare and playgroup, from a purpose adapted facility in Raymond Terrace, after being moved off base in 2017. With the initial plan to be to then move to a new purpose built facility in Medowie, that plan has now been axed, affecting nearly 100 children and their families. Families and staff were notified on Tuesday that the service would cease at the end of the building lease in December, leaving families less than four months to find other preschool arrangements for 2019. Williamtown RAAF Base Group Captain Peter Cluff addressed families in a letter, explaining that Defence had made the decision based on the fact that more child care and preschool places are not needed in Medowie and Raymond Terrace, and that there are lots of vacancies nearby. Williamtown Preschool director Michelle Curtin said it is incredibly disappointing for all staff and families, when they know their service is so badly needed. “We are not just a child care service to these families, we offer so much more support to Defence families, and have done for over 45 years.” Michelle, her staff and the
q Deborah Benseman, Cr Paul Le Mottee, Centre Director Michelle Curtin and Sally Rolfe with Williamtown Preschool students Fletcher, Saxon and Dominic. centre committee are now in planning mode to find a solution. Michelle told News Of The Area, “We are currently trying to find out which provider has taken over the lease of our building in the hope that they may throw us a lifeline and let us sublease our side of the building for 12 months to give us time to relocate our service.” “If this is not possible then we need to find somewhere temporarily relocate to, so basically an empty building or community hall we can utilise until we can find a permanent solution.” “We are currently in discussions with Port Stephens Council for any assistance they may be able to provide, and are looking into Capital grant funding to assist with costs associated with building,” she said. Williamtown Preschool Committee Secretary Sally Rolfe told News Of The Area, “I am extremely frustrated and disappointed with the Department of Defence having dismissed their ‘commitment’ to find a permanent longterm facility for Williamtown
Preschool.” Williamtown Preschool Committee President Deborah Benseman told News Of The Area, “It’s been one disappointment after another.” “After the chat with Defence on Thursday evening, it is evident that they are treating us as a business commodity rather than families and unfortunately for us, we are seen as a liability.” Councillor Paul Le Mottee was vocal with his thoughts on the matter, praising the job RAAF personnel do to serve their country, but critical of Defence and their handling of this type of community concern. Councillor Le Mottee told News Of The Area, “The RAAF are a bunch of people prepared to put themselves in harms way so the rest of us can sleep safe at night, but the Department of Defence are the most uncaring, illogical, insensitive department i have ever had to deal with.” “This building was refurbished for this purpose, spending an absolute fortune to do so, and just on two years later, they’re abandoning it, and it just doesn’t make any sense.”

Abbott to take on Kate next Election By Marian SAMPSON and Rachael VAUGHAN
THE results of the next NSW Elections will see Port Stephens led by a truly powerful woman regardless of results, continuing on from our current female leadership under Kate Washington MP. Local small businesswoman and RAAF reserve Squadron Leader Jaimie Abbott, is asking the community for their support at the 2019 NSW Election as the Liberal Candidate for Port Stephens. Labor’s Kate Washington currently holds the seat. Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “I will have a five month old baby at the time of the Election and I will be like thousands of other working mothers in Port Stephens, Jacinda Ardern Prime Minister of New Zealand has proven that
having a baby doesn’t affect the way you represent the people, I’ll be no different from any other working mother.” She believes that she is well able to work with all levels of Government to create great outcomes and to make the lives of the people of Port Stephens better. Jaimie has an impressive history of service to the community, having spent seven years as the President of Hunter Animal Rescue, is a volunteer fillin presenter for Port Stephens FM, was on the committee of the Hunter Business Women’s Network and volunteered for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Volunteer Support Group. As a Communications Adviser for the Royal Australian Air Force, Jaimie participated in international Air Force exercises in Malaysia, Hawaii, Alaska, The Philippines, and Guam. In 2011, she was deployed

for six months to Afghanistan, earning the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Australian Active Service Medal and the NATO Medal. “I’ve had an incredible
career to date, but the opportunity to represent my community in State Parliament is the most exciting,” she said. Abbott in her short time as a Councillor has delivered
on many promises, while Kate Washington has fought hard for her community since being elected in March 2015. Kate Washington MP told News Of The Area, “I congratulate Jaimie Abbott on her candidacy. I respect her brave decision and look forward to a clean campaign, focussed on the issues of importance to our community.”

Students focussed on the performing, composing and appreciating aspects of dance. The program followed curriculum guidelines with the students learning that through dance they can communicate moods, feelings, and ideas. Principal Helen Bourne told News Of The Area, “It is through expressive, formal and sensory qualities that a story begins to unfold.” The Spectacular started
with the beginning of Disney will Mickey Mouse and moving through Pinnochio and Olaf. The Cars then made a dramatic appearance as students were dressed in cardboard cars. Woody from Toy Story also made an appearance as well as Dory and Nemo. “Of course Dory couldn’t remember her name as she has short term memory loss and Bruce was reminded that

Lunetta Cutajar from Seaham Public School, awarded for returning a jumper she found to a teacher, who was able to ensure it was returned to its owner.
By Rachael VAUGHAN A SMALL yet passionate crowd gathered at Medowie’s Lions Park Memorial on Saturday to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day for 2018. Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War began in an innocuous way when the government at the time sent a relatively small group of advisors in 1962. This small group of 30 grew to a force of 7672 personnel at the peak of Australia’s involvement. From 1962 until the fall of Saigon in 1975, it is estimated that over 60,000 Australians served in the War with over 3000 injured and 521 never seeing their family, friends and home ever again. The invention of television
was widespread at this time and it gave those at home an opportunity to really see, for the first time, what war really looked like. Public sentiment quickly turned from being in favour of sending our troops to South East Asia to becoming vehemently against it. Unfortunately many of the returning service men and women bore the brunt of these protests. In time, society became more knowledgeable and respectful leading way to the “Welcome Home“ parade held in Sydney in 1987. This understanding and respect continues today through Vietnamese Veterans Day. The Medowie service began with a moving speech from Ian Harding, President of Medowie
q Special guests, Returned Service Men and Women, and school representatives at Medowie Vietnam Veterans Day Service.
RSL Sub Branch, outlining the reasons why we were paying our respects. RAAF Pastor David Deal then spoke about the ultimate sacrifices that all Service Men and Women have given. Bob Parish from Medowie RSL Sub Branch then spoke passionately about the service given during the war as well as the difficulties many experienced after their service had come to an end. Several local clubs, schools and individuals laid wreaths to conclude the service, including but not limited to, students from Medowie Public School, Wirreanda Public School, ladies auxiliary and Kate Washington’s office.

Jumpers for Lambs By Marian SAMPSON
THERE is no denying that the country is undergoing a devastating drought and nothing can be more heartbreaking for a farmer than to see his ewes lamb and then abandon them. The ewes simply are not strong enough to raise a lamb and are looking to survive. Farmers are collecting the abandoned lambs and hand feeding them in what can be described as a desperate bid to save their farms and livestock. The Port Stephens Community Arts Centre patchwork ladies were heartbroken to see news items in the media on how regional farmers are struggling with the drought. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The
Area, “The Regional Farmers are hand feeding the lambs, however it’s a problem to keep them warm. “Many of our members are rich in time not cash, and decided to get together to keep the baby lambs warm by knitting jumpers for the them.” Each Tuesday morning the Westralia Room at the Arts Centre is usually filled with sewing materials and quilting enthusiasm. “This week everyone had pulled out their pieces of wool to start looking after our lambs,” she said. So far the enthusiastic ladies have made 30 lamb sized jumpers. With different patterns being used for the ewes and rams. The Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is also holding “A Spring Affair” to welcome the start of Spring on Saturday 1 September.

Vietnam Veterans Day at the Bay By Marian SAMPSON
AUGUST 18th saw the community of Nelson Bay come together to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. The commemorations at Nelson Bay were celebrated by young and old with Rhiana Mackenzie of Tomaree High School delivering the address. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the
men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. On the day of the Battle, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan. The Australian Servicemen prevailed, after fighting in torrential tropical rain for four hours. Eighteen Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded at the

This was the largest number of casualties in any one operation since the Australian task force had arrived in Vietnam. The North Vietnamese and Viet Cong casualties were also high with the bodies of 245 enemy soldiers found, and evidence that more bodies had been carried away. In 1969 on the anniversary of the Battle a cross was raised on the site

by the men of 6RAR, the cross is now at the Australian War Memorial. In 1987, Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced that Long Tan Day would be known as Vietnam Veterans Day. This year saw the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. It was a moving service attended by locals who served in the Vietnam conflict as well as their
families. Approximately 60,000 Australians served in the Vietnam War and 521 paid the highest price, losing their lives during their service. The RSL’s Tom Lupton served in Vietnam. He told News Of the Area, “We are very pleased to see young people involved in the commemorations, as it will fall to them to carry the commemorations forward.” Among his Medals Tom Lupton was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry for his service with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, he was also awarded the Vietnam Star of Freedom by the previous Vietnam Government. He was part of the team that took the Cu Chi tunnels which were the base of the Viet Cong during the Tet Offensive in 1968. The commemoration of Vietnam Veterans Day is one which sees recognition of the 60,000 service personnel who served in the Vietnam War and the struggles which they continue to endure.

ROBOCUP 2018 was hosted at The University of Newcastle last week. RoboCup Junior Australia is a project -orientated educational initiative that supports local, regional and international robotic events for young students. Several schools from across Port Stephens competed in the event, including (but not limited to), St. Philip’s Christian College Port Stephens, Bobs Farm Public School, Tanilba Bay Public School, Hunter River High School and Raymond Terrace Public School. Our Town Is Coming Alive By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE ‘Showcase’ performance evenings have become the unmissable annual event that sees students from all feeder schools to Irrawang High School come together to display their talents to packed audiences. This year’s theme ‘Showcase 2018 - My town is coming alive’ saw nearly 700 performers and crew from Irrawang High School, Irrawang Public School, Grahamstown Public School, Medowie Public School and Wirreanda Public come
together over two nights to perform to sold out crowds. The performance evenings are planned and executed flawlessly, from the ushers, to the performers and backstage crew, through to the home economics group preparing food for special guests before each performance. Showcase is truly a magnificent example of high quality public education. Lue Fagan from Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “Showcase is something that our school, and the wider Lakeside
three disciplines, those being Robocup soccer, onstage novice (formerly dance) and rescue robotics. Raymond Terrace Public School participated in all three disciplines, with all students in 6BW competing and achieving success in their first year, with the “Raymond Terrace Rockets” advancing through to the finals. Raymond Terrace Public School Year 6 teacher Bernadette van de Wijgaart told News Of The Area, “Our students had a thoroughly rewarding learning experience and were able to study the design of other student’s robots and gain
valuable insight.” “These opportunities are there for schools to take advantage of. “We now have the wonderful support of Dr Aaron Wong and The University of Newcastle, as we move our students forward, professional partnerships cannot be underestimated in 21st Century teaching,” she said. On the day students competed from both Public Education and private sector schools. It was through a training day hosted by St.Phillip’s in late 2017, in which both Bob’s Farm Public and Raymond Terrace Public attended, that led to the wonderful learning experience and competition interest.

What is the idea of an Open House? BF, Raymond Terrace
I believe that Open Homes are a way of allowing buyers to view a home they are interested in without the pressure of a one on one inspection with the agent. Buyers can also bring along a family member or friend and discuss the features and benefits of the home in privacy, amongst themselves. During an open the agent will listen to general feedback, comments and observe prospective buyers, all the while gauging interest & motivation, plus be on hand to answer any questions that may arise. A great agent will engage in conversation with the potential purchasers, learning what their financial circumstances are ie: do they need to sell, obtain finance or have cash. They will also find out more detail about what they’re seeking in a property, which will help the agent put forth the properties appropriate features & benefits. If after this discussion an offer hasn’t been obtained, a great agent will follow up. The agent would have obtained the

MEDOWIE turned on the event of the year with their recent ‘Medowie Bales Out The Drought’ fundraiser, but this weekend they’re making sure you know that they don’t just party once in a blue moon. The Medowie Bull ‘n Bush offers all what is great about small town pubs: great food, great atmosphere and great support of live music and entertainment for their patrons to kick up their heels. This Friday, Bad Paris is packing the bags and heading

overseas, well Stockton Bridge that is, to kick it with Medowie and turn on a great night for all. Bad Paris is a four piece Rock band with attitude, and that attitude is to keep the dance floor rocking with a collection of Rock music from the 70s to now. This pumping band consists of guitar, bass, drums and female lead vocal. All band members sing, so that gives a depth in the band that enables them to be able to play a multitude of music, covering most styles and
decades. Bad Paris consists of Alicia Hignell on lead vocals, John McFadyen on lead guitar/vocals, Anthony Robinson on drums/vocals and Liam Rocker on bass/vocals. This is a great band with its members playing for many years, gelling together to be a very tight unit. The band members have over 80 years combined gigging experience across Australia and overseas. Give yourself a night out, head on over to the town that knows how to put on a good party, enjoy a bite to eat and then hit the dance floor to dance the night away.
potential purchasers details upon their entering the home and therefore should be able to make contact afterward for feedback, again gauging interest and potentially obtain an offer.
Hope this helps. Denise.

Mrs TH, Salt Ash
Dear Mrs TH, FIFO is a very good acronym. Husbands or wives who work away fly in and fly out of each others lives at regular intervals and the transitional times can create disruption and despondency. Most people, on their return, will have one thing on their minds. You guessed it, they will want to start up their mower and give the lawn a good once over. Yes, Mrs TH, we are talking euphemisms here. Once the postmow glow is over, however, it can be a time where both parties feel exhausted. The one who has been away has been working hard and missing out on family events, and the one left at home has been working equally hard, often juggling not just employment, but all the household duties, including those that had previously been shared. Children also get used to having one parent around, and suddenly they have to share mum or dad again. This can be particularly difficult when the parents have different parenting styles. While Dad is away it may be totally acceptable to eat pancakes for dinner and use the dog as a dishwasher, but the ‘normal’ status quo can take time to re-establish. I would suggest that the best way around this issue is to communicate. Discuss your hidden resentments instead of allowing them to fester like a boil that will no doubt explode at a very inappropriate time, like when you are paired up in Boxercise and practising your uppercuts (though this will be easy to get away with, as the uppercut is the most incorrectly thrown punch in boxing and you can just blame poor technique). Look at the big picture and think about why this arrangement is in place. Things could be worse. You could work together. Now there’s a recipe for a complete marriage breakdown. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

New Courts for Netball
By Rachael VAUGHAN MEDOWIE Netball Club has long been dreaming of the room to stretch out and play to their hearts content with all teams having the room to train alongside each other. That dream is finally a reality, with the opening of their two new courts this week at the Ferodale Oval home courts. Medowie Netball Club has doubled in size in the past five years and urgently needed these two new courts in order to accommodate the 28 teams, plus 22 ‘Net Set Go’ players (4-7yr olds). Up until now, at any given training session there was often up to three teams sharing a court due to the lack of space. The Medowie Sports Council including Medowie Netball Club representatives, Kerry Whitty and Caroline Hollings, along with Deputy Mayor Councillor Chris Doohan, had many discussions and meetings over the planning and construction of the courts. Kerry Whitty told News Of The Area, “Medowie Netball Club are extremely excited to have the two new courts, and now have our sights set

firmly on our next goal, where we will now get started on applying for a grant to accommodate new lights and silver seats to complete the courts.” The Teams which were attending training and the celebrations on Wednesday to christen the new courts and post pads were; Hotshots, Sparkles, Meerkats,
Malteasers, Minions and Mustangs. Medowie Executive Committee members and representatives from Port Stephens Council were also there to witness the first session on the new courts, and the official ceremony as they were opened by Councillor Chris Doohan.
