LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR

Music is the one thing that creates an environment without having to do much except for the simplicity of listening. Its affect on an individual differs from person to person. A song can help someone go through a break up, or get through the grueling stages of high school. An album can have an ever life changing affect that inspires you to achieve something you’ve have never achieved before. Melodies can take you back to a time where you relive a great memory or phase. Music can make you feel empowered and motivated - even get you through the toughest times of your life. The goal for New Sound Magazine is to introduce new and upcoming music artists that emit their talent, self expression and hard work - which deserves recognition. As a recording artist myself, it is a relatable feeling. We work really hard on our craft because we love it and therefore becomes a necessity. And I know first hand that an artist wakes up, writes, performs, rewrites, performs, records, gets rejected, rewrites, manages, promotes, makes phone calls, writes more and then goes to sleep....wakes up and repeats the recipe. It takes persistent hard work and endless motivation to achieve goals for any career. Especially in the entertainment industry, where the internet has given immediate and easy access to get yourself out there. With that said, there are millions and millions doing so simultaneously. Now that’s where we come in. New Sound knows what these hard working artists deserve. So we support them and want the world to know about the next big thing you haven’t heard yet! We found a great team of writers here at New Sound, who have a knack of finding greatly skilled and unique musicians, bands and artists from all over the world. It has been an honor to work and read about other creative individuals, their journey as well as listen to new music. It definitely has inspired me to continue my path as a singer- songwriter and to let myself enjoy the talents of others that are on similar journeys as mine. For you never know which one of these new artists will help you get through your next break up, your tedious experience in school or help give a soundtrack to a phase in your life. As mentioned before, I am a singer songwriter who performs throughout NY state & Long Island. Currently, I am in the process of recording my upcoming EP. Craving Strange by Matt Nappo

There is much that’s really strange about Craving Strange. This foursome from Amityville is original and pure rock and roll with enough energy to power the CERN Supercollider. The band is road tested and has a lot of success under their belt and has survived the business far longer than most original bands do. Having worked with the likes of Rob Jacobs (Weezer, the Eagles), John Moyer (Disturbed), and have performed with bands like Flogging Molly, Puddle of Mudd, Patent Pending, Queensryche, Brand New and been featured between Buckcherry and Bon Jovi at the Bamboozled festival, the band is well seasoned and tight. The music of Craving Strange is aggressive and hard hitting. Marked by catchy guitar riffs and memorable hooks, the sound is a classic rock lovers dream come true. This band brings that raw testosterone of bands like Guns & Roses or Rage Against the Machine into the 21st century. Although they run on balls and sweat, there is maturity in the writing that you don’t find much of anymore.

10

NEWSOUNDMAGAZINE.COM

What sets Craving Strange apart most is the power and tone in the vocals of Jimmy G. On one occasion I saw the band play Pat Benetar’s Love Is a Battlefield in the record key and the vocals were every bit as powerful as Benetar herself, perhaps more, considering the voltage supplied by the band. Seeing the band live is exhilarating and refreshing. They clearly take what they do seriously but deliver it all with a sense of humor and fun and recall the true spirit of rock and roll. In a time where so much music is manufactured and created with studio tricks and gimmicks, Strange is pure what-you-see-is-what-you-get performance. If you love rock, you have to appreciate when a four piece band sounds the same live as they do on record and without and technology hiding behind the scenes. These guys bring it live just as they do in the studio. With six collections of original to date, their latest release is Careful Of The Landmines, a six song EP that leaves you wanting more. If you like to rock and miss the time when real rocks bands inhabited the Earth, this EP is for you. You won’t find strings and horns or lots of fancy backing vocals on a CS recording but you will find honest to goodness rock made 100% by human hands. Like most bands that have endured, Strange has had to deal with personnel changes along the way. The inevitable outcome of being in the music business and trying to have a semi-normal life is that some players won’t be there for the long haul. The current lineup consists of founder, Jimmy G. on vocals and guitar, Frank “Junior” Guertin on lead guitar, Jimi Tassone on drums and Chris Monte on bass. The music of Strange can be heard on over 100 radio stations across the country. Look forward to more good things from this band. Find them at cravingstrange.net.

Blank Range Blank Range

by Andrew Keuma

Nashville’s ever booming music scene has evolved greatly from Country centric honky tonkin’ to a beautiful mix of every genre imaginable. Blank Range is a perfect example of the musicianship and genre spanning mindset you can discover in Music City. From their singles “Scrapin’/Before I Go To Sleep” and the EP Phase II, both released in 2013, to their full length debut Marooned With The Treasure released August of this year, the band crosses boundaries between classic ‘70s rock, outlaw country, and even some experimental psychedelia all mixed in a contemporary stew. Riff heavy and a variety of lyrical content, the band is representative of a hard working group of guys who don’t mind hitting the road whether they’re making it big or not.

14

Although currently based in Nashville, the majority of the members of Blank Range hail from Northern Illinois, but it seems they are just as at home on the road or in the studio. Their latest, Marooned With The Treasure sounds like a band that has been together for decades, the distorted riff oriented guitar work of Gus Gustafson is reminiscent of classic rocks greatest players and not too flashy when it comes to a solo. Taylor Zachry on bass and Matt Novotny on drums form a tight rhythm section that supports the imaginative vamps like a steel spine. All the while Jonathon Childers’s working man’s vocals remain consistent and powerful through all of their recordings. From the garage rockin’ psychedelic Phase II to the more polished and accessible Marooned, Childers’s style remains a driving force and distinct voice for the band.

NEWSOUNDMAGAZINE.COM

Marooned With The Treasure is a perfect accumulation of the band’s previous variety of recordings, truly a great debut that is equipped with tour ready sound and a song or three for any music lover. Dig a little deeper and you can literally trace the riffs and styles back to the band’s beginnings in the Nashville house concert scene. Phase II offers lo-fi recording style and raw, almost live sound, all the while contrasting strange tracks like “Ziggy Coyote” with the classic rock recipes you find in “Same Sun” and “Neon Sign”. Skip ahead a few years and you find yourself immersed in the four track EP Vista Bent, an organ and synth drenched record that’s a little more playful, with a lounge rock tinge. The quirky and conversational “Circumstances” and laid back “All the Stars” shows the versatility of the members, it’s obvious this band is letting the songs come out naturally. Genre splicing while staying true to a distinct and honest sound will keep Blank Range busy for years to come. The road ready atmosphere in the music is sure to yield extensive touring, whether it’s smaller local venues or a return visit to Bonnaroo listeners can expect a lot more to come from this band. Catch them this fall/winter and keep an ear out for some more studio work in the future.

Celebrating The Music Of Stevie Nicks by Matt Nappo

It’s hard to think of an artist with broader appeal than Stevie Nicks. From her Fleetwood Mac days through her solo career beginning in 1979, Stevie’s music has touched fans of all ages and across many genres. That is why there have been and continue to be so many Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood Mac tribute bands. Enter Gypsy, a 9-piece ensemble from Long Island that seeks to separate itself from the “tribute” label and prefers to be billed as a celebration of the music of Stevie Nicks. Gypsy is built for the theater experience rather than the local club scene. Packed with an all-star line up of Long Island music scene veterans that have powered some of the most successful club/party bands for three decades, Gypsy was founded and created to be more than a club band. For lead singer Janet Spallone Soluri, the opportunity to pay homage to Stevie Nicks is the culmination of a lifelong dream. A veteran of many successful classic rock bands, Janet has always aspired to do a production honoring one the iconic singers and songwriters of her generation.

18

Steve Stewart, who is the driving force behind Gypsy, is not only an accomplished drummer and singer, he is also a savvy business mind and for the time being has taken on the management of the band. Undaunted by the amount of competition in the crowded Nicks tribute field, Stewart is focusing on bigger and better production values to separate Gypsy from the run-o-the-mill club scene bands. Musically the band is flawless. The caliber of musicianship is apparent from the very first note through the show finale. Soluri’s voice naturally sounds very similar to Nicks so there is no sense of put on or mimicry. Guitarist Adam Ditre not only captures the fine work of both Lindsay Buckingham and Waddy Wachtel, the two guitarists who Nicks has spent most of her career with, he also looks like a cross between the two. The other players, Anthony Lombardo on bass guitar, Adan Tese on saxophone and percussion and Brian Connolly on keyboards were part of Stewarts plan from the start, to insure the musicianship was top notch. The three backing singers, Teri Pavia, Deanna Carroll and Suzanne O’Connor round out the ensemble and seem to genuinely share the comradely that Nicks and her backup singers enjoy. The interplay with the band members helps sell the illusion of a true Nicks experience.

NEWSOUNDMAGAZINE.COM

Gypsy doesn’t limit itself to just perfect renditions of the records though. They put a lot of time and thought into the visual experience and creating the magic that true Nicks fans have come to expect in a concert. I had a chance to grab a few minutes to chat with Stewart and Soluri about some the challenges that a project like Gypsy presents that are different from a typical club or party band, as well as where they see things progressing. They were both aware of the unique issues they face, from the small number of venues locally that are capable of presenting a band of that size with the visual aspects and esthetic required. There are also some fiscal realities that become apparent when trying to keep a band that requires a certain level of production running. Also, keeping virtuoso musicians patient while the bands expands the opportunities to perform can present a challenge. For now though, everything is looking bright and positive on the horizon.

From the fan perspective, the entertainment value Gypsy presents is a notch above the status quo Long Island tribute band. Although a relatively new player in the crowded field, fans who have seen their show have come away with rave reviews. Recent shows at Foxwoods Casino and the Founders Room at the Paramount in Huntington resulted in a social media storm of accolades and the demand for tickets to their upcoming showcase at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh is uncommonly high. Be sure to mark October 8th on your calendar for a free show featuring Gypsy at the Cedar Beach Hut on the big stage. Visit gypsynicks. com for more info and show dates.

Introducing Singer Songwriter

Inbar Koprak By Karen Bella

Tel Aviv, Israel, has a night life unlike any other. Think New York City mixed with Los Angeles, with a heavy dose of falafel, pubs and dance clubs - especially by the beach - and you’ve got some idea of nights in TelAviv. And along with the beauty of palm trees and young, exuberant adults filled with love, a major music scene flows like a river throughout the city at night. If you visit many of the popular pubs during open mic nights, you’ll often spot talent from all over the world. During a recent visit there I had the honor of meeting a native Israeli musical artist who enchanted her audience at every live performance I witnessed. She has created an indelible mark of true art and music that comes to mind instantly when I think of Israel.

Allow me to introduce, Inbar Koprak.

The songstress graces the stage with poise, gentleness, and a modesty that hides the talent she holds so dear. Her rich and lavish curly hair defines her image, as she dresses herself with her Takamine acoustic guitar. In the moment between the silence and the first note Koprak sang, it felt as though an angel was channeling the power of Aretha Franklin with a touch of Tobi Lightman, Koprak , who has been writing since the age of ten, plays multiple instruments (including piano & guitar) and studied music at Rimon in Tel-Aviv. “I just think that my parents knew that this is who I am: An artist,” she explains.

“So they let me be; paint on walls, write music and practice a lot with emotional support ... They [my parents] made me independent and strong enough as if they knew this is how my life will look.” Her music mixes elements of many different genres, such as rock, blues, soul and country. Listening to Koprak’s large voice filled with passion, pain, experience and love, you can even hear a little John Mayer, a touch of Alicia Keys and a sliver of Janis Joplin soul in her voice. “Everything inspires my sound.” Koprak recently released her debut album ‘Just Be’, a live acoustic recorded album, and just finished recording her second album in London. Her loyal fan base extends from Israel, all the way to India, Germany and Holland. Koprak is is the works of planning a European Tour in 2018 to further share her music. She offered some insight into the secrets of her success. “Don’t compromise your sound. It will show on your face on stage.” Instead, she lets her music be her statement; An extension of her being.

“Just be. Love yourself.”

Tel Aviv’s nightlife is quickly becoming fertile ground for many hopeful musicians and aspiring singersongwriters like Koprak, whose career is blossoming and growing into something larger than perhaps even her dreams.

MPBELL April 22, 1936 - August 8, 2017 A Legacy To Remember by Gabriel Crawford

Sadly, the passing of Glen Campbell did not come as a surprise. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2010 and his family made his struggle public with the 2014 documentary, Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me. His fans and the public knew his death was inevitable and that it was only a matter of time. When I saw that he had passed, the love and admiration that his contemporaries spoke of him was inspiring. I truly did not realize his complete legacy. Listening to the likes of Brad Paisley and Reba McEntire explain what Campbell meant to them opened my eyes to a new side of his career. As I was looking at tributes pour in while spinning some of my Glen Campbell vinyl, I became surprised at who the tributes were coming from. It was not the country stars that surprised me; I knew he was a certifiable country legend. He had charted at least 26 top ten singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs while making nearly 80 albums. He was the foundation of country music during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Then I ran across a rather odd tweet about Campbell that made me stop. It was from Cher saying how she enjoyed her time working with him. Now, it may just be me, but I do not find Cher and Campbell to be remotely related musically, except for the fact they both sing. I began to look over Glen Campbell’s career and I immediately was taken aback. His impact went far beyond country music. I was short changing him.

23

At the beginning of his career, Campbell was a studio musician for the likes of music’s biggest artists including Elvis Presley, Bobby Darrin, and Jody Miller. During the mid 1960’s, he even became a temporary replacement for Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys. He did not seem like just a country boy anymore. As Campbell’s solo career took off, he became the original cross over artist. Although all his albums remained country in genre, his hits were at home on the pop charts as well. He charted 7 top 20 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including the number one hits “Southern Nights” and “Rhinestone Cowboy.” Not to mention, he also placed 26 albums on the Billboard 200. He proved that talent could not be restricted to any category. CBS quickly saw this early in Campbell’s career granting him a variety show that lasted 4 seasons. This gave him the vehicle his talent needed. Not only did this show the breadth of his solo talents, but it also showcased just how versatile he was. The guests ranged from Donny Osmond to Stevie Wonder. He even sang selections out of the Great American Songbook with Liza Minnelli. It was not just the fact that he preformed among these groundbreaking performers, it is how he did it. A quick YouTube search will turn up many of these performances, which Campbell breezes naturally through. It was second nature. Country music may have been his choice of genre to release albums, but in the end he was simply a performer of music.

24

Campbell has also been praised by some of music’s greatest guitar players as being one of the best pickers himself. When he received his Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and performed “Rhinestone Cowboy” at the 2012 Grammy awards ceremony, Paul McCartney can be seen singing and dancing along to each lyric. Moments after Campbell’s performance, McCartney went back stage to praise him for his musical legacy and talent. The tributes from famed guitarists like Lenny Kravitz, Paul Stanley, and Peter Frampton rolled in after his death, each praising him on his “brilliant” guitar skills. Is there an area that Campbell’s influence did not touch in the musical realm?

NEWSOUNDMAGAZINE.COM

In short, it is easy to sum up Campbell’s career. Throughout his tenure, he performed with the likes of Liberace, Shirley Jones, Three Dog Night, and Tennessee Ernie Ford. He worked in the studio with many legendary musicians, including The Mamas and the Papas, Frank Sinatra, The Monkees, and Phil Spector. He is also hailed as one of the greatest guitar players by members of a little known group, The Beatles. Not a bad roster. Recently, Alice Cooper summed up Glen Campbell perfectly after his death by stating, “You think of Glen as country. Alice Cooper as rock and roll. We couldn’t have been closer.” Campbell’s talents and innovative insights in music led him to not only be a universal star, but proved that music is as music does.

In the end, music is a universal language that transforms into many different shapes to act as an outlet for every emotion. Many can do one, but not all. Campbell’s legacy will continue to be realized in years to come as music continues to evolve. The day Campbell passed, the world didn’t just lose another great musician, it lost a piece of music; a piece of music that has no shape or form, just purpose for anyone who listens.

VIOLET DAYS

Small Band From Sweden Takes The Music Industry By Storm by Kristen Catalano

Violet Days is an indie pop band from Stockholm, Sweden that has been taking the music industry by storm since they formed in 2010. Linda Hansson, the front runner of the group, was born in a small village in the countryside and regularly sang Swedish folk songs to her siblings throughout her childhood. While growing up she drew inspiration from the Beatles, Michael Jackson and Coldplay. In 2010, she finally made the move to Stockholm in order to pursue music full time, it is here that she met the rest of her bandmates. The other members of the band are Fredrik Häggstam, Fredric Johansson and Kristoffer Eriksson. All of the members of Violet Days were born in different small town across Sweden and met after moving to Stockholm. Hansson provides the vocals for the group with Häggstam and Eriksson on the guitar and Johansson on the drums. Eriksson also serves as the bands producer.Their sound is best described as a mix of modern pop and rock with an arena/indie twist. Their name, Violet Days, is inspired by Hansson’s grandmothers name.

28

After forming Violet Days in 2010, Hansson traveled between London and Stockholm writing with different people and creating material for the band. Once she had enough material and experience she returned to Stockholm and they began recording their debut single “Razorheart”. “Razorheart” was released in the summer of 2014 and reached the top of the Swedish iTunes chart. They followed the release of “Razorheart” with a few more singles including “So Dope” which surpassed half a million streams on Spotify. Their single “I’m a Dreamer” surpassed ten million streams on Spotify and hit #1 on HypeMachine earlier this summer!

NEWSOUNDMAGAZINE.COM

“I’m a Dreamer”, which was released at the beginning of this summer, features not only the dreamlike voice and lyrics of Hansson but also the keyboard and production skills from Eriksson which enhances Hansson’s vocals. The groups guitarist, Fredrik Häggstam has also been featured on one of the “Chainsmokers” most popular tracks, “Paris”. The video for this single will have you both reminiscing on your childhood while also reminding you to ignore what others say and chase your dreams. The video is in black and white and Hansson has stated that the reason behind this is because it enhances the darkness and edge of the track.

In 2017 alone they have released three singles titled, “I heart U”, “I’m a Dreamer” and “Suck at Love”. Violet Days has been releasing music through an independent record label called “100 Songs” in Sweden. This label typically deals with releasing songs digitally and serves as a great platform for artists who are still discovering and defining their sound. The group was nominated for “Rookie Songwriter/Producer of the Year” at the Denniz Pop Awards in 2015. “I wanted to tell the story of realists versus dreamers. It’s about the frustration when you have people around you that don’t see things or believe in them the way you do. When you constantly want to escape reality and dream away” said Hansson, the lead singer when asked about their single “I’m a Dreamer.” The group is expected to release their debut EP sometime this fall with a string of tour dates in the future. If you are a fan of Michael Jackson or The Chainsmokers then this may be the group for you! Follow them on all of their social media accounts to stay up to date with all of their new projects!

CHASING MOONLIGHT Chasing Moonlight makes inspiring music from both sides of the country

by Olivia Perreault Alternative duo Chasing Moonlight are on a musical journey to not only share their music, but to inspire and unite listeners along the way. Artists Brett Steinberg and Alessandro Chillé have collaborated ever since the pair met almost a decade ago. About a year and a half ago, they reconnected and started to write music together again, despite the fact that Chillé lives in Los Angeles and Steinberg resides outside of New York. This past summer, Chasing Moonlight competed in Firefly Music Festival’s “Big Break” competition. Steinberg explained that this led to a “two and half month journey of the most shameless promotion” he’s ever done. To his surprise, he learned that his friends, family and fans were actually really interested in the opportunity Chasing Moonlight had. The duo ended up making it to the Top 5 showcased group of artists. Although they did not end up winning the final spot to play at the festival, they had the chance to perform live at William Street Common in Philadelphia.

30

NEWSOUNDMAGAZINE.COM

31

Since 2016, the band has recorded a few singles, including their most popular tune, “Home.” Earlier this month, they released another track entitled “All I Need.” Chillé said that this song stems from the fact that although they have dreams of playing huge arenas like Madison Square Garden some day, they are content just creating and living in the moment. “I create because it makes me happy,” Chillé said. “I do things for the inner joy and the social connection and nothing related to money.” Steinberg added that “All I Need” is about independence and not letting anyone get in the way of him creating and growing as both a human being and an artist. Right now, the duo has a few songs in the works and hope to release a single soon and an EP in the near future. Steinberg explained how he used to be against putting out singles rather than a record or EP, but now he sees them as more “digestible.” However, he believes that releasing an EP or record will heighten the experience for fans since they have only released singles thus far.

32

NEWSOUNDMAGAZINE.COM

Ultimately, the pair wants their music to unite people and allow listeners to feel connected to the lyrics. Chillé hopes fans will listen to the perspectives and lessons in their songs. “We find one of the biggest, most important aspects of art, and music specifically, to be the comfort that is brought when you combine storytelling, honesty, and an experience that kind of reminds you that we all are in this together,” Steinberg said. From here, the duo wants to keep “raising the bar” not only in terms of the genres they approach, but different techniques they use to create new tunes. Steinberg hopes to make it onto the West Coast in the future, converge into one studio space with Chillé, and create as much music as possible.

“We’re going to continue to strive toward making the greatest possible art and greatest possible connections with those who listen,” Steinberg said. “That’s always been our mission statement and I hope it always is that.” “In the end, everyone’s got these dreams and goals but we just write music because we love it and we enjoy, more than anything, when people are able to take it in and love it too,” Chillé said. On the side, Steinberg is the lead vocalist in the band Kalimur and Chillé is an actor who will be guest starring in the Adult Swim show Black Jesus. Sun Seeker

Nashville’s Finest Psych Americana By: Andrew Keuma

The laid back, melodic sound that you will find on Sun Seeker’s debut EP Biddeford catches anyone within an ear shot with its sunny pop tempos, but upon deeper evaluation the listener finds that the band has honed in on a genre that contrasts tradition folk song structure with a light touch of psychedelia. The songs float with ease, conjuring images of a lazy, cool weekday haunted by emotional ghosts that always seem to arise in comfortable moments. The tracks may flow with comfort and ease but the sound has been many years in the making. Having met in high school in Nashville the core members guitarist Alex Benick, bassist Asher Horton, and drummer Ben Parks have spent close to a decade playing music together in various projects, even busking together on Broadway in downtown Nashville as early as age 14. Amidst the neon lights and honky tonks that fill Broadway, the three would cover songs from inspirational artists such as Bob Dylan and The Band.

36

Furthering their experience and skill in Music City they continued following their passions, attending college in Nashville and eventually officially forming Sun Seeker in 2013. The band’s live performances and distinct collection of songs caught them plenty of attention, eventually signing with Jack White’s label Third Man Records after opening for Dan Kroha at the notorious venue The Basement in Nashville. In 2016 they released their first single, “Georgia Dust”, on Third Man. The song was well received, showing the band can deliver in a studio atmosphere, the dreamy harmonies are unforgettable as the chorus hits:“Turn your back when light brings color/ Don’t see me like you see others..” Accompanied by steel guitar and a wash of synth, the lyrics hop along, hopeful and melancholy.

NEWSOUNDMAGAZINE.COM

The single left music lovers wanting more and on July 14, 2017 the band released the six track EP Biddeford. The Album is a great reflection of what Sun Seeker is capable of in the studio, maintaining their original sound while not being too over produced. The addition of Rodrigo Avendano on keyboards allows the casual landscapes to evolve behind the driving lyrics. The title track “Biddeford” is a saddened groove about loss and longing: “Today in Biddeford/ Some say it’s a curse/ I’ll give my life to her/ And ride along in a hearse…” The following track “Won’t Keep Me Up At Night” starts with a catchy guitar riff, happily up tempo and then, once again, the lyrical content stays with the ongoing theme of departed lovers while keeping a hopeful viewpoint. The remaining tracks keep up with this theme, all the while staying laid back while infusing a tinge of psychedelic tempo changes and interludes that the band utilizes well in their live performances, often lengthening the interludes.

“Sunny Day Girls” is a perfect example of this structure, a seemingly simple pop track at first, but almost comes to a complete stop at the peak of the song only to jump right back into the driving beat. Biddeford is a strong debut, the sound is distinct and well thought out, while remaining easy to comprehend and interpret. Sun Seeker has put in the effort and passion to make it to where they are today, longtime friendships and experiences really come through in the music. The songs sound natural and not overly polished. Biddeford is being accompanied by an extensive tour schedule and being on the road is sure to inspire even more great writing from these artists. Expect a full album soon and keep an ear out for tour dates in your area this fall.

Nashville’s Most Woke Band By Andrew Keuma

Meshing funk, soul, and all the feel good elements you find at any jam band concert, Waker find themselves at the hub of the jam scene in Nashville. Formerly known as Koa, the band was formed by childhood friends Chase Bader, vocals and acoustic guitar, and Conor Kelly, electric guitar. Along with Bader and Kelly, Koa consisted of Ryan Ladd on bass, Alex Matthews on percussion, and Ryan McClanahan on saxophone. Waker’s song writing formula strays little from Koa, but the addition of Dave Czuba on keys, and David Krutcher on a full drum set adds dynamic and a fuller sound that equips the band with a broader canvas to paint their improvisations on. With a sound that can easily be likened to Dave Matthews Band or The String Cheese Incident, Waker does not sound outdated or a throwback to the ‘90s jam scene. Playing their first show at a yogurt shop, the band has come a long way to play huge stages at Bonnaroo, SXSW, and Wakarusa. Their wonderfully structured songs fuse almost any genre imaginable, stringing together simple composition with tight grooves to progressive improvisation that would please any festival crowd. Bombarding the listener with major key, up tempo vamps one cannot help but feel the need to move, getting lost in the wah guitar heavy, organ drenched jams. The percussive precision and ‘stuck in your head’ sax riffs meld together all the while straight forward lyrics keep the tunes grounded. More focused on the live performance as you would expect from a band wanting to portray a communal ‘woke’ experience, Waker has toured relentlessly since their 2015 debut EP but expect to release more studio work this year. Until then keep an eye on the festival circuit and your local venues.

J Lane’t’s Gumbo Gospel New Sound. Traditional Message. By Kristen Debler

Some of the greatest musicians in history have shared their messages with conviction and passion. Musicians such as Bono, Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin, Michael Jackson, Eddie Vedder Joan Baez, and Nina Simone has used the musical stage to bring awareness to the many current issues that were important to them. Music is of the greatest platform’s to bring fans closer to the truth they bop their heads to and sing along with in the car. Nobody knows this like J Lane’t; a modern day gospel singer with a new twist. Jovan Lanet Morris has been singing and using music to praise the Lord since she was two years old. Born and raised in Sacramento, California, she spent her childhood serving her church and her local community with her voice, and her hands. Jovan shortened her full name, and the name J Lane’t was born. J Lane’t is trained in classical, jazz and R&B and even played the piano, clarinet, and trombone as a child, as well as performed in her high school choir. Besides her training in music, J Lane’t holds two Bachelors of Arts Degrees in Contemporary Christian Ministries and Marketing from Fresno Pacific University. Her education has helped her continue the service work she started as a youth in her home community, but on a much broader scale. J’Lanet has infused all of her musical training and her educational training to create a one of a kind, unique sound. Blending together classical, jazz, R&B and her passion, as well as conviction, of the good news she has created what can only be described as Gumbo Gospel. J Lane’t describes her music as “different, but it still has a traditional feel to it. My music will get you groovin’ and get you to think at the same time.” This new style of music branches out to different types of listeners. Infusing these types of music together helps J Lane’t’s Gumbo Gospel reaches audiences that might not have been interested in listening to traditional gospel before.

52

As a public speaker, J Lane’t feels like she has a responsibility to share her message with the world. Her passion for good, wholesome music and for the good news led her to where she is today. “The main message is hope and endurance in my music. Christ gives us hope to make it through, and he gives us the endurance to keep pushing. J’Lane’t has been asked to speak and share her message at events for youth, adults, as well as Ministers themselves. Her love and passion for the world drives her work in marketing, ministry and music.” You can listen to J Lane’t’s message on Tuesday nights during her radio show. She started doing radio four years ago with her best friend. The idea sparked when they realized that there were not a lot of radio shows that cater to young people, that didn’t have a lot of talking. They decided to create the Emerge Gospel Radio Show and got 35,000 listeners all on their own. The radio show was stopped for a couple of years, but they were asked by E-Water Radio to bring their show back in June of 2017. You can listen to their radio show every Tuesday at 6pm PST/9pm EST on www. blogtalkradio.com/ewaterradio or on your phone at (323)642-1757. You can listen to the whole program on your phone or press 1 to talk to the host. J Lane’t would love to hear from her listeners. Frida Sundemo Swedish musician takes listeners ‘out of this world’ with new record By: Olivia Perreault

Take a trip through a futuristic world with Frida Sundemo, a Swedish artist who is releasing her first international album this October. Sundemo, originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, gained attention after releasing her debut album, Let It Out, exclusively in Japan in 2010. Her presence grew in the industry once she started creating music with the producer/songwriter Joel Humlén; she released the 2012 EP Indigo followed by the EP Lit Up By Neon a year later. Aside from her music, Sundemo made a cameo in the 2015 film Kill Your Friends, which starred actors Nicholas Hoult and James Corden. Last year, she reentered the music scene with her single, “We Are Dreamers,” and dropped three more singles this year: “Keep An Eye On Me,” “It’s OK” and most recently, “Gold.” Her music is alluring; each track includes airy, mysterious-like beats. Sundemo draws inspiration from watching sci-fi movies like Gravity, The Martian and Space Odyssey. She likes listening to the score music from these futuristic movies, and said that she thinks her music portrays this outer space vibe. These new singles are a part of her debut international album, Flashbacks & Futures. Sundemo said this record includes more cinematic songs; although there is still an electronic-pop presence, this album showcases more slow tempo tracks. She hopes her music will empower listeners and maybe even make them curious about science. “I really want them to get into the music, like getting into a mood that is calming and makes them reflect about their lives,” Sundemo said. “I want the music to speak for itself in some kind of way.”

56

Aside from music, Sundemo is also interested in fashion - but not the brand-name clothes you’d normally see on shelves. Whenever she visits a new city, she goes to a vintage shop and said she could rummage through the clothes for hours. She explained fashion as a creative outlet, similar to music, and wants to incorporate her love for space and monochromatic style onstage. “My biggest dream would be like a really cool - not a spacesuit, but a spacesuit from a parallel universe - it wouldn’t look like a spacesuit but it would be inspired from it,” Sundemo said. “I love that kind of costume-y stuff.” Sundemo’s dream venue would include a symphony orchestra and an LED screen as a backdrop. The screen would project a spaceship or something similar so that the audience can feel like they’re traveling through outer space — making the show a true experience. This is the first time Sundemo has pushed a release in the U.S. and hopes her music will have a positive impact here. She will be performing in Scandinavia and London either later this year or early next Spring, and then would like to plan an official tour — including some shows in the states. The 14-track record, Flashbacks & Futures, will be available October 6 through the Scandinavian record label, Cosmos Music. The Wrecks deliver their first EP to the Music Scene and are here to stay By: Olivia Perreault

Indie-rock band The Wrecks, hailing from Thousand Oaks, California, are fairly new to the music scene, but are definitely starting to leave their mark. The five-piece band, made up of Nick Anderson on vocals/guitar, Nick Schmidt on guitar, Westen Weiss on guitar, Aaron Kelley on bass and Billy Nally on drums, recorded their debut EP on a whim. According to their Facebook page, the band had an engineering friend who was granted access to a recording studio for three days. In just these few days, the group recorded as much as they could and left with a solid piece of work. In 2016, The Wrecks released this EP, titled We Are The Wrecks, and were signed to Another Century Records. Their first single featured on the EP, “Favorite Liar, already has over six million hits on Spotify. The song is incredibly catchy, starting off with an indie vibe which slowly turns into a jammable rock tune. It has all the right guitar riffs combined with engaging lyrics to make it a perfect edition to your playlist.

60

We Are The Wrecks also features two other songs, “Turn It Up,” and “I Don’t Like You.” “Turn It Up” starts the EP off on a loud note. The Wrecks captivate listeners with their catchy rhythm and anthem-like chorus. “I Don’t Like You” is an angsty, fun song with relatable themes. Lead vocalist Anderson’s unique voice is something fresh that will replay in your head all day long. He sings, “Say what you want/ Say it right to my face/ I wanna hear it all, come on please/ It’s like music to my ears that I’ve been hearing for years.”

The Wrecks just finished touring with punkrock band All Time Low on their “Young Renegades” tour and are already back on the road. Their “Robot Army” tour begins this October in San Francisco with Vesperteen, Mainland and The Technicolors. As they make their way onto the East Coast, catch them at The Space in Hamden, Connecticut on November 14 or at Mercury Lounge in New York City on November 15. VINYL PLANE

Vinyl Plane

When people discuss hard Rock & Roll bands, they tend to refer to the classics, such as Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones. Some may even go further back in time to the legends that started the genre: Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Little Richard. But Rock & Roll isn’t just an era or genre. It’s a feeling; A vibe, that speaks directly to your ears and makes you move from your gut. There are few bands today that hold that strength of classic Rock & Roll with a hard, rockbluesy twist at the core. However, there is one band in particular that does: The Vinyl Plane. The Vinyl Plane, which originated on Long Island, NY in 2009, captures the essence of musical integrity, good taste and as band co-founder and guitarist Keith Obenauer states “...blood, guts and rock & roll.” The name of the band itself conveys its essence: it’s where the music lives - in the plane of existence between the needle and the record player. The band, TVP (for short), has had a number of member changes throughout the years but seem to have finally found the perfect blend of talented musicians to carry their true sound. Dave Seubert (lead singer and harmonicist) co-founded the group along with Obenauer - eventually adding, as of January 2017, Billyjack Powell (Drummer), Richard Steinholz (Bassist) and Dennis Folger (Guitarist).

In April 2017, the band released their selftitled EP with a world wide distribution of CD’s and online stores. Folger stated that the EP’s popularity has reached not only fans across the US, but to Sweden, Russia, Mexico, Norway, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Australia, Canada, and other parts of Europe, as well. The five track EP includes three original songs jointly written by the group along with two cover songs. ‘Two Timing Woman’ the first original song on the record has that rough rock and dirty bluesy swing with vocals that grit right into your core, perfectly kicking off the thematic sound and vibe for the rest of the EP. Their cover of ‘Smokestack Lightnin’’, continues the band’s soulful tribute to rock with a sound that will makes you want to drive your car way over the speed limit, roll down all the windows, and blast the song with your hair blowing everywhere. This feeling of wildness and freedom which permeates the EP - is essentially what makes The Vinyl Plane sound so thrilling and entertaining - particularly in live performances. All of their songs are driven with the same rawness to their instrumentation - a feeling that you cannot fabricate. The music is real and carries that creative “it” spark. This past August, they performed at Long Island’s “89 North” in Patchogue. Their show resulted in a wave of new and strong supporters, as well as satisfying their dedicated fan base. Folger, who produced the album (and studied with legendary guitarist, Jim McCarty) shows strong musical direction on stage as well as superb guitar licks. The band members are strongly in sync with one other, creating a tight instrumental sound. Steinholz’s groovy bass playing lays down a solid pavement for the songs in collaboration with Powell’s rhythmic and skillful percussion. Obenauer plays his one of a kind guitar solos with incredible passion and virtuoso sound. And lead singer, Seubert, when not playing harmonica solos, sings high tenor rock octaves with impeccable heart and growl while commanding the stage with his signature moves.

The band’s onstage chemistry and communication is a reflection of their personal offstage relationships. Having the opportunity to meet the band, it’s clear they consider each other a family brothers, even - and are each incredibly down to earth, making them very personable and approachable, somewhat unexpected given the members’ dashingly good rock star looks and charisma. TVP seems to have all their ducks in a row; making sure that each career move brings them improvement and growth toward their goals. “Decide where it is you want to go, and make sure everyone is on the same page” explained Folger. “Don’t just be in a band to be in a band; Make sure the pieces fit. Your inner-voice will tell you so; Be sure to listen to it.” The band has already earned endorsement deals with companies such as Dillion Guitars USA, Acrylic guitars by George Fedden, NUX Pedals and Pyle Microphones. With an EP already under their belt, they are currently recording at the famous Electric Randyland Studio with co-producer Randy Pratt (of Cactus/The Lizards) and recording engineer Josh Burrell, who recorded the latest Cactus album “Black Dawn”. TVP is booking and performing throughout the Tri-State area, including the legendary BB King Blues Club & Grill in Manhattan. So if you wanna rock, roll, and feel wind in your hair while having your core shaken with blues, this is one band you will not want to miss!

SHANNON LABRIE Farmers Daughter Tops The Charts By: Kristen Catalano

Shannon Labrie a Lincoln, Nebraska native had humble beginnings but quickly became a fan favorite with her 2013 debut, “Just Be Honest”. Labrie’s lead single “I remember a boy” was independently released and reached the Top Ten on iTunes Singer/ Songwriter chart and the Triple A Radio charts. Labrie’s music defies all genres and norms and instead tells the story of a girl and her experiences through life. Labrie also uses her music to take a stand on topics that she is passionate about including Politics. Before settling into Nashville’s independent music scene Labrie traveled around the country studying philosophy and theology. Labrie is part of “Bands Under the Radar” records. BUTR is a podcast, blog and record label that features unsigned bands and indie artists. Labrie returned in April 2016, with her sophomore album “War & Peace”. This album was tracked live at Nashville’s house of Blues Studio D, with producer Tom Michael. This album, “War & Peace”, does not stray from Labrie’s usual work and is a story of the love and loss that the singer has experienced throughout her life. Labrie has said that title track on this album was inspired by the love and commitment she received while dealing with a personal tragedy. In “Heaven Crashed Down” also featured on this album, Labrie gives listeners an idea into what it was like to loose her father to cancer when she was just thirteen with lyrics like, “He was all we had, he was all I’d lost. The morning heaven crashed down, I grew up.” Labrie does not shy away from any topic on this album and calls out American politics in her track “It’s Political” while also praising the country and its ability to offer citizens endless possibibilities in “American Dream”. Labrie also released a holiday EP in 2015 that feature six songs. Along with singing and songwriting Labrie plays both the piano and guitar. Rolling Stone named her on their “10 New Country Artists You Need to Know” September 2016” article.

When asked about her inspiration Labrie said “When I listen to music a lot of the times it’s to make me feel good. But a lot of other times, it’s to make me not feel alone. I started writing this album after a loss that put me at war with everything in my life. The songs are small doses of the war I feel inside and the peace I long to find.” Labrie has opened for a number of acts including Gabe Dixon, Phoenix, ZZ Ward, The Head and the Heart, The Wild Feathers, Michael Franti and Valerie June. MARK DIAMOND 79

By: Kristen Catalano The Washington state native, Mark Diamond, who has been creating and releasing music for a couple of years now, recently took the music scene by storm with the release of his single “Roses”. “Roses” was released this past July and features Diamond’s soulful voice mixed with instrumentals that you will feel down to your bones. This single is reminiscent of Adele’s early years with a fresh beat that will keep you interested until the last beat. Diamond was born in a small town in Washington called Maple Valley and credits the rain for his style of writing. It is clear after listening to a few of his tracks why he says this because they are quiet and slow mixed with a powerful force. Similar to a drizzle turning into a downpour that becomes the only thing that you can hear. Through his music Diamond hopes to quiet this downpour for his listeners, if even for a minute, so that they can achieve peace. Although Diamond has blown up a little bit on the music scene he remains humble to his beginnings and has gotten the date of his first live performance of an original song tattooed on his arm. He has stated on his Facebook page that this tattoo serves as a reminder everyday that “it takes courage to be yourself.” The singer and songwriter’s sound has been described as “dark pop” and I honestly don’t think that there is a better name for it. Diamond pairs dark, emotional lyrics with catchy beats and instrumentals that will have everyone bobbing their heads along. His songs would be great for a quiet road trip or a trip to the gym, they are just that versatile! In 2016, Diamond released his EP “Cosma” that was met with rave reviews. The tracks “1200 Days” and “Losing Control” were particularly popular off of this EP. All of Diamond’s music is available on iTunes, Spotify and Sound Cloud.

‘Figuring it Out’ the music scene By: Olivia Perreault

Hailing from Oakland, California, punk-rock band SWMRS are emerging into the industry with a new take on punk music. Lead vocalist Cole Becker, rhythm guitarist Max Becker, vocalist and guitarist Joey Armstrong and backing vocalist/bassist Sebastian Muller make up the musical group, formerly named Emily’s Army. In 2016, the band released their debut album, Drive North, through their own indie-label, Uncool Records. However, they ended up signing with the pop-punk label Fueled By Ramen later in the year and released a remastered version of the album.

84

Drive North takes listeners on a trip through the SWMR’s honest lyrics, head banging tunes and unique sound. The album opens with “Harry Dean,” a fast-paced track, honoring Harry Dean Stanton, which showcases Cole’s raspy lyrics. It continues with the band’s most popular tune, “Figuring It Out,” an anthem to millennials who have no idea where they’re headed in life. “And everybody wants to know themselves, we’re too scared,” Becker sings, “we’re still figuring it out.” Incredibly guitar-driven tune “Uncool” will leave you screaming the lyrics out your car window, “Palm Trees” is the perfect jam-worthy tune to mosh along with, and the angsty, loud track “Drive North” fuels the feud between southern and northern California. Drive North closes with “Lose It,” the perfect break-up song which Becker sings: “Tell me why’d you have to have such a damn good taste in music / Yeah, if all my favorite songs make me think of you, I’m gonna lose it.”

NEWSOUNDMAGAZINE.COM

Luckily, the band has punk running through their veins - especially because drummer Joey is the son of punk band Green Day’s lead vocalist, Billie Joe Armstrong. Although some of the songs sound like they’re influenced by Green Day’s well known overpowering percussion matched with mumbled vocals, Drive North has an edgy, new-age sound that makes the band stand apart from not only Green Day, but the entire punk scene.

Their timeless, catchy lyrics are mixed perfectly with the aggressive background beats, making the best combination for music junkies who prefer loud music - that makes an even louder statement. Catch the band on their Fall co-headlining tour alongside The Interrupters, kicking off October 13. SWMRS will hit Boston on December 7 and New York City on December 9. Yuval Vahav

87

Yuval Vahav The Ethnic and Soul Fusion of Yuval Vahav By: Karen Bella “World music” is usually defined as traditional music that incorporates musical elements from around the globe, such as various ethnic, neotraditional, folk and pop influences, just to name a few. Singer and songwriter Yuval Vahav, a resident of Israel, has taken this approach and created music which integrates the ethnic sounds of traditional Israeli folk music with modern, soulful touches. “I try to stay open minded with the music I create,” explained Vahav when asked to define his sound. “But the way it comes out at the moment is mostly soul and ethnic groove.” Vahav’s passion for music took root while in the 4th-grade playing the piano, but hit a major turning point when he served in the Israeli army. “A friend showed me some chords on the guitar, and that opened my chakra.” At 18, he was pursuing a military career and was chosen to be a commander in the Israeli Defense Forces. Destiny, however, had other plans for him. After only a few month of service, Vahav injured his foot and was unable to continue in the military. While recovering in the hospital, he realized his future had been forever changed, and felt that something bigger was pulling him towards an inevitable showcase of his musical artistry. Vahav credits his musical influences such as Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, The K.O.’s, and Anderson Paak with helping him become the songwriter he is today. As a solo composer, he communicates the ups and downs of life, relationships and his own independent journey as a musician.

88

While attending the Sela School in Tel-Aviv for music production, Vajav learned to create and further refine his unique sound. A multi-instrumentalist (keys, drums, bass and other ethnic instruments), Vahav is able to create exactly the sound he needs, and guide the music to precisely where he wants it to go. In addition, his skills as a one-man-band extend beyond his solo works, as he is also recognized as a talented collaborator who has played with many other skilled musicians and vocalists throughout Israel. In 2016, Vahav released his self-titled EP on iTunes and other online stores (YouTube, Facebook). The five-track EP included one English tune: a melancholy mid-tempo-but-still-seductive melody titled “Losing Myself ”. While the remaining four album tracks are in Hebrew, even without understanding the language, the emotions in his feelings and vibes can still be felt. In songs such as “(What Did I do?)” you can plainly hear elements of traditional soul and R&B through the ethnic instrumentation. All of the songs on the album are, in fact, infused with a modern Motown groove that shines through. Currently, Vahav is putting the final touches on a special live performance in Israel, including the beginning stages of doing a tour. Where are they now? R.E.M.

By: Gabriel Crawford It has been nearly six years since R.E.M. officially disbanded and “called it a day,” but their legacy increases to gain traction. The interest in the band lives on in both nostalgic and new fans alike. The band’s official social media feeds are constantly being updated with history and trivia to thousands of followers. They are also releasing a new box set to commemorate their 8th studio album, Automatic For The People, but what is the quartet up to these days, both personally and creatively. First, there is the band’s original drummer, Bill Berry. He is often known to be more reclusive then his other band members and officially retired from performing in 1997. Most of his life from there is a mystery. The latest interview found of him was from 2007, when the band was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. According to the website Online Athens, he seems to enjoy a quieter life in Farmington, Alabama with his wife and his young son, while still making music in his one man band Bomb (Bill’s One Man Band).

Next, R.E.M.’s lead guitarist, Peter Buck is still quietly living in the music scene. According to an interview he gave to Rolling Stone last year, he is one of the “busiest ex-rockers in America.” He still performs and makes records, but to an underground scene. He has unabashedly stated that he hates everything about the music industry. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife and two daughters.

Then there is Mike Mills, R.E.M.’s bassist. Mills, a multi-instrumentalist, has lent his many talents to various records since R.E.M. Most notably, Mill’s broke the news of David Letterman’s retirement in 2014. He was scheduled to perform with the musical guest, Joseph Arthur, the night Letterman announced his retirement. In 2016 he released Concerto for Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra with Robert McDuffie. This project takes a more classical approach to music then his previous endeavors. Lastly, there is the always outspoken activist, R.E.M.’s lead singer, Michael Stipe. He has kept a relatively low profile considering he was the band’s frontman. Since R.E.M., has returned to his first love, art. He was a fulltime visiting artist and scholar at NYC Steinhardt Department of Art in 2014, while having various art exhibits of his own personal work. According to the New York Times, he most recently was featured in a David Bowie tribute concert, which has caused him to contemplate music once more. As the band’s members have stated frequently, there will not be an R.E.M. reunion now or in the future. They are content with their 31 years in the music industry and have closed that chapter on their lives. This chapter includes making 16 studio albums, which sold nearly 40 million copies worldwide, a few Grammys, and a proven legacy.

LISA HELLER By: Olivia Perreault 21-year-old singer/songwriter Lisa Heller, hailing from Simsbury, Connecticut, targets millennials in her soul-searching alternative pop tunes. Heller has been on an upward climb since she released her first single, “Life on the Run” in 2015. A year later, she achieved recognition around the world for the music video to her song “Hope.” The video was trending in countries including Sweden, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Finland and Ireland - even hitting #1 in some spots. Now, “Hope” has garnered over 1.6 million views on YouTube, and even led to the “Hope Wall” movement. People from all over the world who were struggling with hard times submitted their stories to be featured on Heller’s Wall of Hope. All of Heller’s songs are emotional and empowering - containing positive messages revolving around strength, bravery and overcoming obstacles in life. Her 2016 single, “Things You Never Said,” is about how she overcame anxiety, and her latest single, “Midnight,” reflects on the modern-day hookup culture during college.

“Midnight,” which was released this past July, is a catchy and relatable tune for not only millennials, but anyone who has been left with mixed feelings for a significant other. “Whatever happened to that kind of love, the one you couldn’t live without?” Heller sings. “It’s hard to see the possibilities when all you do is shut me out.” Like most public figures, Heller has a chance to share her experiences with the world because of her outlet. On September 18, she spoke at Twitter Headquarters in San Francisco, California for the #digital4good #ICANHELP event, where she shared her story and spoke about the positive impact and leadership digital media can create. So far, Heller’s music has been featured on various Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music playlists - but she is set to release five songs soon, which will be her biggest music release yet. COAST MODERN Coast Modern cruises into the music scene By: Olivia Perreault Los Angeles based duo Coast Modern shared breezy beats and vibed with the audience when they stopped by the Mercury Lounge on September 25 in New York City. The indie-pop duo includes lead vocalist Coleman Trapp and backing vocals/bassist Luke Atlas. “Going Down,” the first track on their debut self-titled album, opened the show. They continued with the dreamy tune “Tiny Umbrella,” single “Guru,” and track “Now I’m Cool.” Their music is versatile; mixing beachy, island beats with pop, electro, and alternative rock rooted sounds.

In Mercury Lounge’s small, dark bar space, Trapp and Atlas certainly showed off how “cool” they are - sporting a casual look of a T-shirt and Vans, Trapp kept the audience excited and the party alive. The audience sang and danced along as Trapp made his way back and forth across the stage, jamming with his unique vocals. At one point, Trapp stopped to ask the audience to yell their name on the count of three, and then smiled, saying “Nice to meet you.”

The one hour set also included the single poppy-electro tune “Dive” and the groovy, diverse song “Pockets Full of No.” Trapp sang out the catchy lyrics, “We can get high / We can get low / We can go all night / We can take it slow.” Coast Modern’s headlining tour is in support of their newly released self-titled album. Trapp and Atlas explained that their inspirations for the album stemmed from listening to a lot of podcasts, including The Duncan Trussell Family Hour podcast, and reading. Additionally, they “dig the futuristic influences and productions of current hip hop.”

Their music definitely strays from the norm, which they described as a “big soup of so many influences without regard for what’s trendy.” Although their music stems generally from pop, it dips into other genres like rock, reggae, hip hop and folk. In the future, they wouldn’t be opposed to branching out a little, claiming nothing is off limits. One day, the duo hopes to play Quiznos Area, the first arena in space, but for now, they want to just meet more people around the world and spread good vibes along the way. Currently, they’re in the works of collaborating on projects with various people. “We’re normal guys who stumbled into this almost by accident after years of working in bedrooms and studios,” they said. “I think a lot of people have immense creative potential waiting to be unlocked.” For more information, tour dates and music, check out Coast Modern’s website.

When Their Name Paints Their Sound By: Karan Bella “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet;” An infamous quote from William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’. How important is a name? What feeling does it give your senses? A name of someone you know can jolt your memory - both good and bad. A name can stay engraved in your mind or awake your curiosity. In fact, my curiosity arose when I was introduced to the band, Advent Horizon.Advent, defined as the arrival of a notable person, thing or event. Put the two together: The appearance of a horizon. The name paints the image so much so that it actually reflects their sound. A friend of mine played their tune “Humboldt”. The video shows a beautiful sky from beneath the trees within a forest, all the while a hypnotic melody is played on the guitar. Lead singer and guitarist, Rylee McDonald, begins to sing with a clean and ethereal voice leading into the build of the instrumentation.

There is a Rush essence to the vocals, as the group is very influenced by the legendary band. “Humboldt” has a soft, folky rock feel with a progressive touch. Drummer, Mike Lofgreen explains, “One thing all of us really jive on is the hard rock / progressive rock sound.” Which you can hear in their song “Midweek Maniac”. Lofgreen continues “ I would say we tend to write music that incorporates heavy instrumentals, some groove and clean vocals. It is driven primarily by big guitar and drum tones and generally has a lot of layers.” The guys have known one another for quite some time forming in 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah. McDonald and Lofgreen have known each other before their music days but the seeds were planted when they met guitarist/keys, Grant Matheson and bassist, Cason Wood. Cason and Matheson were beat by the other two in a Battle Of The Band competition. In their case, the losers were winners that day.

The group worked together for a few years, building their friendship - creating a bond which is incredibly important for a music band. In 2010 they released their first EP and that’s when they guys took their band more seriously. Wood told New Sound the secret to their great musical vibe and lasting relationship, “The strong point of our band has always been the friendship we share. And when you get the ball rolling, don’t ever forget the passion of the music.”In the music industry, bands that get signed to a label is few and far between. However, the guys brought up their appreciation and concern toward the internet and how it affects musicians today. “It really seems like a double edged sword to me.” Matheson expressed. Today artists do not have the ability to get the promotion and distribution they deserve. But they do have Alpine Innovations and Dusty Roads Products sponsoring them. At the same time, the internet allows a global reach through various social networks. And because of that it has helped the guys get their music out there and building their ever growing fan base. They released two singles and music videos for them this year. A full length album is also in the works as the four talented musicians are currently recording and writing for it. It will be their 3rd album. A 2018 release. Before the end of the year, Advent Horizon will be performing several more shows but their goal is to finish the album and spend the summer of ’18 performing at progressive rock festivals throughout the country. If you want to see these rockers play their socks off, you can check their pages: facebook.com/ adventhorizonband, twitter.com/adventhorizon1, instagram.com/adventhorizon. Their music is also available on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and adventhorizon.bandcamp.com.So the question is, can you actually see the appearance of a horizon when you listen to their music? Yes. And you’d have to hear it for yourself to see exactly what it looks like!
