Sports programs at metro Atlanta’s private schools help kids learn and grow By Lindsay Field Penticuff

thletics offers an amazing opportunity for students to grow.” “They are dedicated. They are working together. They are excited.” “We are giving kids a place to be themselves and shine.” These are just a few of the many things metro Atlanta private school coaches and athletic directors say when asked why they believe sports programs are important for young people. They are proud of the programs they offer students, and they are

even more proud of how their student athletes learn what it really means to support each other through teamwork. Of course, these programs aren’t just about camaraderie. Many students have won multiple state championships and even earned scholarships to Division I colleges. And as the athletic world changes and evolves, so do the sports programs offered by area independent schools. Here, we look at several metro Atlanta private schools and spotlight the sports programs
they offer that give student athletes the opportunity to learn, grow and truly shine.
Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy: An Outstanding Assist As with all sports teams at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, faith is at the center of what they do. By making basketball available to students at young ages, it allows the school not only to teach and solidify the fundamentals of the game, but also to give students the chance to work with coaches

who are good Christians, says Derrick Mason, Boys Basketball Head Coach. The basketball program, which teaches children in first through 12th grades how to play the game, has been extremely successful, and the proof is tangible. The varsity boys basketball team was the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) State Championship Runner-Up for 2018-19 season, and 11 players are currently on basketball and academic scholarships at various universities. According to Mason, “Our student-athletes receive the opportunity to work together as a team, which we believe to be a vital attribute to success in life.”
Greater Atlanta Christian School: Something for Everyone Since launching its sports programs, Greater Atlanta Christian School’s student athletes have won 60 state championships,
and as of last school year, 21 have signed scholarships to play at the collegiate level. Out of the school’s nearly 700 students, 65 percent participate in sports. “For many of our students, athletics is an area of passion and ability,” says Tim Hardy, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. “Our coaches love to partner with our students as we train, practice and compete with joy and purpose.” The school offers 20 sports throughout fall, winter and spring—from football, cross country, water polo and golf to wrestling, swimming, baseball and lacrosse—and supports more than 60 athletic teams on campus, serving students from sixth through 12th grades. Student athletes also have access to three outdoor turf fields, five sport-specific stadiums, an Aquatics Center and a state-of-the-art Performance Training Center.

The Lovett School: A Real Ace Having 10 tennis courts on campus is a great benefit to the students at The Lovett School who are participating in the school’s outstanding tennis program. Since the program was started, the girls tennis team has earned seven state championships and the boys 22. But it’s about more than state titles for the school, says Ricky Davis, Head of the Tennis Program. In addition to developing the whole child, the sports program is designed to develop the whole child. “For our students, being a part of Lovett’s tennis team is something much bigger than themselves,” Davis explains. “All of us enjoy winning more than losing, and we try to prepare our players to win. However, we do not measure our success by wins and losses, but by whether our athletes have grown as people and as players.” KNOWAtlanta 5

The Mount Vernon School: In a New League Esports is often associated with social video gaming, and the nuances and skills required to compete at the top level can sometimes go unnoticed. With an emphasis on collaboration, strong and effective communication, creative thinking and thorough planning, the Mount Vernon esports program focuses to prepare student-athletes for the intensity of competition play. More than 20 students in grades 9 through 12 participate in eSports at the School, competing in two of three separate state championships in a league of more than 80 teams from over 40 schools across Georgia. In the spring of 2019, Mount Vernon finished fifth in the state, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen State Tournament. As the program expands, Mount Vernon hopes to host local tournaments to cultivate longterm relationships and bridge the digital gap between players.

of 2019, 78 middle school and 138 high school runners are on the roster. With a 3.1-mile cross-country path located on campus and a robust coaching staff made up of 14 full-time employees, students have access to the facilities, training and attention needed to grow as a runner. The team’s record also speaks to the program’s success. The varsity boys and girls teams have won a total of 15 state championships and have finished the season as state runners-up 13 times. Throughout the history of the program, 11 student athletes have gone on to run in college, and alumni regularly return to participate in the annual cross-country camp the school hosts on campus.
The Westminster Schools: On the Deck After joining the swim program at Westminster in 2017, Varsity Boys and Girls Swim Head Coach Sharon Loughran began infusing mindfulness techniques into the team’s practices, which she believes have had a tremendous impact on the success of the program, as well as the health and wellness of the school’s

student athletes. Loughran bases her mindfulness practice after Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, the founding executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. According to Kabat-Zinn, “Mindfulness means paying attention on purpose to the present moment and things as they are with curiosity and kindness.” By utilizing this practice, Loughran believes it has helped contribute to back-to-back GHSA State Championships for both the boys and girls swim teams.
Woodward Academy: More than a Game Since the GHSA added eSports to its official list of sanctioned programs in 201819, Woodward Academy has participated. It is one of the fastest-growing sports across high schools and colleges and provides different game options for student athletes. Students at Woodward in 9th through 12th grades play on the team and are proud to be a part of the cutting-edge of digital sporting. The team is excited to continuing growing and developing this school year, both in terms of skill sets and ability, and they are encouraged to recruit more females into the program to help continue to cultivate a culture of team unity. Esports Coach Daniel Wages and his team strive to make a positive, supportive team environment at Woodward, giving kids a place to be themselves and shine, while also converting a pastime like video gaming into a passion—one that is increasingly helping kids earn college scholarships. n

espite headlines detailing funding issues and lack of art education in the school system, Atlanta manages to thrive with a wealth of opportunities for metro students passionate about the arts. Education with foundations in the arts can also help students succeed. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, students who study art are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and three times more likely to be awarded for school attendance. Fortunately, because metro Atlanta’s private schools are diverse in their range of art disciplines and mediums offered, you’re sure to find a school that fosters your child’s unique interests and passions. From visual to performing arts and everything in between, here’s a look at the schools paving the way for the area’s young artists.

Mount Paran Christian School (MPCS) fosters creativity as early as preschool and extends to high school graduation. The school’s programs help students explore their passions, as well as provide a vehicle for the training of academic minds and creative thinkers. “Hands-on experiences open the neural pathways used for math, science and language arts. These highly valued programs run the gamut, from various orchestras and bands to vocal ensembles, dance, drama, technical or musical theater, visual arts, recording arts, graphic design and photography,” says Amber Irizarry, Communications Content Specialist at Mount Paran Christian School. MPCS programs are also award winners, including Governor’s Honors, All-State and Shuler Hensley Awards. Additionally, its Dozier School of the Arts gives students the chance to engage in a unique curricular arts magnet program through mentorship and change leaders in the arts. Students can choose from dance, acting, technical theatre, recording arts, vocal music, instrumental music, theory and composition, worship arts, recording arts, 2D/3D visual arts and graphic arts.

The Galloway School Freedom is a value at the Galloway School, where students are encouraged to pursue their passions and interests, whether through music, dance, theatre or the visual arts. For instance, the school’s Middle Learning and Upper Learning students are given the opportunity to access media arts courses, a relatively new discipline in most schools. Students take their pick from podcasting, video and film composing, screenwriting, gaming and virtual reality design and computer-assisted design. Additionally, and of particular interest to creative-minded students who enjoy performing, the school’s Chaddick Center for the Arts includes a 300-seat theatre and dance studio, which includes a fully equipped performance area. Upstairs, students can learn more about music from the choral and instrumental classroom or record student music in a soundproof recording booth. Teachers also encourage students to refine their skills using The Galloway School’s multimedia technology center, which provides access to 3D printers.

From Primary to Upper School, the Walker School inspires and challenges young students both individually and collaboratively. Its visual arts program helps students embrace the creative process, cultivate their aesthetic awareness and expand critical problem solving skills. Students are taught by educators who are also practicing painters, sculptors, musicians, writers and directors. What’s more, Upper School level students have opportunities to join gallery exhibitions outside of Walker, as well as participate in musical and theatrical competitions and festivals. Instrumental and vocal ensembles from Lower School to Upper School have performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and at the Grand Ole Opry, Downtown Disney, Universal Studios, Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, the Governor’s Mansion and more. “At Walker, we believe in experience over the applause, with the caveat that it truly is a quality experience. We offer the most professional atmosphere possible in an educational setting,” says Karen Park,
King’s Ridge Christian School offers a unique co-curricular program in the arts, which offers classes ranging from academic college preparatory options to professional-level arts. Regardless of the chosen art form, King’s Ridge Christian School offers training through the lens of a religious perspective and culture. After a regular school day, students join their chosen art elective. The immersion classes include dance, instrumental, theatrical, TV/Film, visual arts, vocal arts and worship arts. Students walk away from the experience with the skills for creative expression and critical thinking. King’s Ridge Christian School also hopes students will discover their unique purpose and calling within a religious context.

Student ensembles also perform in Ireland, Hawaii, New York, Nashville, Disney World and Dollywood, as well as at various choral and visual arts festivals. From Lower to Upper School, each division of NCCS has its own dedicated musicals that are designed to help students refine their performance skills, as well as an option to pursue their passions at the collegiate level. All of NCCS’s instructors have a background in their field of instruction and continue pursuing their own skills and talent in their personal and professional work beyond NCCS.

abilities and instill enthusiasm and appreciation of the visual arts. As their teacher, I hope that working on these art projects serves as a confidence-building process that can provide each student with greater self-esteem and a stronger understanding of their own strengths,” says art teacher Aubree Metlick. For example, specific projects include a 3D pumpkin project for Jr. Kindergarten through fifth grade, with different mediums introduced based on the grade level. For example, second grade students are introduced to and use chalk pastel for the first time. More complex projects for middle and high school students include research into different illustration styles to create a “LIFE Behind the Glass” project; students experiment with new watercolor and pen and ink shading techniques for results that impress kids and adults alike. And these visual arts opportunities are offered in addition to an array of other options, from band and chorus to drama, all of which are used to help students strengthen their overall capacity to learn.

Mount Pisgah Christian School Mount Pisgah Christian School (MPCS) goes beyond offering arts, music and theater to ensure a well-rounded education for metro Atlanta students. “The fine arts program at Mount Pisgah is really about developing creativity as a special kind of intelligence,” says drama teacher Daniel Hilton, who also serves as the Fine Arts Department Chair. MPCS works to develop and hone visual arts talent, as well as performing ensembles, including chorus, band, orchestra and drama. However, the school also helps students ages 4 to 18 focus on the creative process and not just the finished product. MPCS students, who begin their visual arts education in Kindergarten and enjoy additional instruction in theater, orchestra, band and chorus starting in the fifth grade, learn how to investigate, interpret and respond to the challenges of an ever-changing world. Students also have the opportunity to express themselves creatively after school through the Mount Pisgah Arts Academy, which is open to the community-at-large as well. Esteemed instructors teach music, art, drama and dance, and student achievements are celebrated throughout the year with on-campus and community performances. “Our goal is to foster creativity, confidence and Christian fellowship through arts education,” says Katherine Thomas, MPCS Arts Academy Director. Private lessons are available in piano, voice, violin and guitar; students also can participate in dance team, majorette twirl and music makers. n

Private Schools:
The Questions You Need to Ask
T
he process of looking for a private school for your child can be overwhelming. There is so much to think about as you strive to make the best decision for your family, especially when there are numerous private schools that can be found right here in the metro Atlanta area. “We are blessed in Atlanta with so many options,” says Rebekka Whitehead, founder and CEO of Whitehead Learning Group, an Atlanta-based educational consulting firm. “Of course, having so many options can lead to analysis paralysis. But there really is a right fit school for each child.” With the wide array of choices out there, how do you make the right decision? It’s important to start at the beginning and ask a lot of questions. Here, Whitehead suggests a few of the most significant questions you should ask both yourself and potential schools as you navigate the process. With the answers you receive, you will be able to narrow down and ultimately select the private school that is ideal for both your child (or children) and your entire family. Which private schools are an option for our family? Whitehead recommends that you begin the process by visiting the

Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools (AAAIS) website, which allows you to search for schools by grade level, special focuses (such as faith-based options and schools that specialize in special needs or learning differences) and geographic location. The results will include a group of schools that fit your most basic needs; from there, you can narrow down your list to between four and six schools and then begin delving more deeply into learning about them. You can visit AAAIS at aaais.org. EXPERT TIP: When it comes to finding the right school in terms of location, Whitehead suggests driving by each potential campus in the morning and the afternoon, when drop-off and pickup are in full swing. This way you can get a good picture what it will really be like to drive your child to and from school each day. How do we know if a school will fit with our family’s value system? Whitehead reveals that it is imperative for you to define your core values for an educational experience before you reach out to potential schools. Ask yourself what your non-negotiables are. Are you looking for a school that offers diversity, character
evaluation unless an application for that school has been completed. So be sure to stay on top of all paperwork as you move through the process. For the SSAT, scores are also submitted electronically; however, you must request that the written section of the test be sent directly to the schools to which you are applying (if applicable). Also, be sure to confirm with the schools on your list when the final SSAT scores will be accepted (traditionally, it is the February test, but some schools adjust their deadlines based on admission trends). What can my child expect from the classroom experience? This question encompasses a number things, from class size and room setup to uniform and homework policies. Whitehead notes that it’s important for you, as a parent, to understand the basic logistics of how the classroom will work. If necessary, you also should ask about access to a school’s support staff, including learning specialists, tutors and counselors. And because extracurricular activities often are a key part of a school’s offerings, be sure to ask about any options that will be available to your child. Many of these answers can be gleaned from a formal school tour.
education, fine arts, athletics, rigorous academics or something else? Once you have your list, visit the websites of the schools on your list and look at their mission statements. Also review the schools’ strategic plans, which outline goals and objectives up to five or 10 years down the road. See how those statements and plans align with your own value system and be on the lookout for any discrepancies. Once you see how the schools approach the educational process, then you can cull down your initial list. EXPERT TIP: Don’t forget to look beyond the mission statement and strategic plan of a school. Whitehead believes that reading a school website’s introduction letter from the head of school can be very enlightening, as this will show what the leadership highlights and focuses on throughout the school year. What kind of testing is required during the application process? Private schools typically require some form of testing prior to a student’s acceptance. For lower school students (grades K through 5), the Joint Admissions Testing Program (JATP) is often the test of choice; it is a standardized cognitive test that assesses a range of abilities related to school readiness. Middle and upper school students (grades 6 through 12) may be asked to take the SSAT, a standardized test that measures the basic verbal, math and reading skills needed to perform successfully in a private school setting. It is designed to predict the “first year of success in an independent school setting,” Whitehead notes.
EXPERT TIP: According to Whitehead, a great way to get a glimpse into a school’s culture is to attend activities outside of a formal admissions tour. Going to a sporting event, a play, a concert or a community program can provide an idea of the parent and student culture in a less structured setting and let you know how people interact with each other as members of the school community. How do we approach the tuition payment process? According to Whitehead, today’s private schools strive to meet families where they are financially. Many schools will have several payment plan options (such as annual or monthly), as well as the opportunity to create a tailored tuition plan or apply for financial aid. Once the logistics are arranged, many schools will allow you to pay through an online portal or bill pay option. Some smaller schools may not offer this type of online system and will require a more traditional method of payment. It’s important to know how this process will play out so you can stay on top of the financial aspect of a private school education. EXPERT TIP: When it comes to the need for financial aid, many schools use the FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment tool, which allows them to securely collect a family’s financial data and make data-driven award decisions based on financial need. Be sure you know which tools are being used if you are working with a school to arrange for a tailored tuition plan. n To find out how Whitehead Learning Group can help your family navigate the private school selection and application process, visit whiteheadlearninggroup.com or contact info@whiteheadlearninggroup.com, (678) 500-9300.
EXPERT TIP: Testing for the JATP begins in October of each year, and results of the test are submitted to schools via the Ravenna online application system. However, a school will not usually review a JATP KNOWAtlanta 15

NeuroLIFE Institute
Life University’s institute takes a holistic approach to a host of neurological challenges
By Ken Abramczyk
P
atients who suffer from strokes, concussions or Alzheimer’s disease face neurological challenges to regain their quality of life. For many patients in the Atlanta area, Life University’s NeuroLIFE Institute assists them by treating these conditions, including Parkinson’s disease and learning disabilities. The institute, which opened in 2012, is housed just off campus on Barclay Circle in Marietta, also trains chiropractors for certification and works closely with researchers at Life University. Dr. Michael Longyear, director of applied clinical neuroscience, says that the institute works holistically (without drugs or surgery) to restore and optimize neurological function. “We work with everything from neurological developmental disorders like autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities all the way up to neural degeneration like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and everything in between,” he says.
Following Life University’s mission According to Longyear, the institute follows Life University’s holistic mission, emphasizing nutrition and chiropractic care to improve the body’s vitality and address its “interferences,” which can be described as neurological conditions that hinder the patient. He explains, “What we do is design exercises and programs to remove those interferences in the nervous system to allow the brain to heal properly and become more efficient.” The work is based on applied clinical neuroscience, which “is the understanding that your brain has plasticity,” Longyear says. “Neuroplasticity is a fancy word to say that your brain has the ability to learn new tricks. We used to think that only children have this ability. Longyear says recent science shows that humans
34 KNOWAtlanta
maintain that ability even as they age, up until death. He explains, “Your brain has the ability to rewire itself. What applied clinical neuroscience is doing is taking that application into the clinical setting.”
Active therapies NeuroLIFE Institute’s therapies are designed to activate areas of the brain that appear less efficient during an examination. Part of that activation includes the use of a Gyrastim, which resembles a giant chair that might be used in space training at NASA. When treating children, the institute references the exercises as “superhero training” or “space training.” This chair spins the occupant forward, backward, right and left. While spinning, the occupant shoots a laser to hit targets. Longyear notes, “[The exercise] restores smoother movement and improves processing speed, perception, and reaction.” The Gyrastim assists concussion rehabilitation, but it is also used for learning disabilities and other conditions. Longyear explains that the brain’s three jobs are to perceive the environment, process information, and formulate a reaction; the Gyrastim and other equipment help patients “rewire” the brain. Photoreceptors in the eyes pick up light, while proprioceptive receptors pick up move-
ment; hair cells in the ear pick up sounds, and other ear cells pick up rotational movement. And through an additional piece of equipment, a vibration plate, the patient works to complete balance exercises to activate an area of the brain responsible for balance and coordination. Longyear says successful movements improve thought processes. As part of treatment for patients with balance and movement disorders, the institute decided to test them for depression and anxiety. Patients practiced one-legged stands during their treatment; once they were able to do a one-legged stand really well, their depression, anxiety, and stress scores declined. Longyear says, “We realized bad movement equals bad brain equals bad thought process. Good movement equals good brain equals good thought process. Much of what we do is movement-based therapies.”
Certification offered NeuroLIFE Institute offers professionals a 100-hour certification in applied clinical neuroscience so that chiropractors can apply it to their own practices. Those interested in the certification program can visit the institute’s website for more information, and patients can obtain referrals to visit the institute from their doctors or chiropractors. The institute continues to incorporate technology and research to advance its mission. Longyear concludes, “Now with some of the technological advances, some of the advances in research, we’re really starting to understand how profound chiropractic is and what it has been doing for the brain all this time.” n
